Abstract: Car access is practically a necessity to get around in rural areas of the United States. Yet approximately 4% of rural residents or 4.3 million people do not have a car. Despite important rural–nonrural differences in the built environment and how people travel, research on rural mobility disparities by car access is limited. This paper addresses this gap by asking and answering the following questions: (1) What are the scope and scale of rural car access in the U.S. and what are the factors associated with not having a car? (2) How do rural carless residents get around relative to their nonrural peers? (3) What are the consequences of not having car access in rural areas? We used a dichotomous rural–nonrural classification to evaluate differences in car access and mobility outcomes between rural and nonrural areas using the U.S. Census Bureau Public Use Microdata Sample and the National Household Travel Survey. The results reveal new evidence on socioeconomic and mobility disparities by car access within and between rural and nonrural areas. Rural carless households earn 64% less and 40% less than their counterparts with full car access and their nonrural counterparts, respectively. Rural Native Americans, Black, and Asian populations have a 2.1 times, 1.3 times, and 1.3 times the odds of being carless, respectively, than their rural white peers, after controlling for other factors. Despite their lack of access to a car, a significantly smaller proportion of rural carless residents bike, walk, or take transit for work trips than their nonrural peers (38.9% vs. 74.6%), which may indicate infeasibility of sustainable modes in some rural areas. Consequently, rural carless residents are 2 times more likely to forsake trips than their nonrural peers due to a lack of transportation options. Our findings highlight rural mobility inequities that carless people face relative to their nonrural peers, which merit attention and tailored policy interventions to improve rural mobility, sustainability, accessibility, and equity.

Rural residents face significant mobility challenges because travel destinations are far, opportunities like jobs and access to essential needs are limited, and rural roadways are more dangerous than their urban counterparts. These challenges are exacerbated when households have limited or no access to a vehicle because other transportation options are often expensive, inconvenient, or nonexistent. The confluence of not having access to a vehicle and living in rural areas is often associated with increased social isolation and difficulties in conducting basic activities like grocery shopping and accessing health care. Researchers at UC Davis used US Census microdata to describe socioeconomic and mobility characteristics of carless households and residents in rural California and conducted interviews to understand the barriers to access and travel adaptations among individuals who have limited access to a vehicle. This report describes the scope and scale of car access in rural areas, identifies barriers that rural zero-car and car-deficit households face in their mobility and access, and proposes personal and policy-level adaptations that would help these households achieve their mobility and access needs using descriptive analysis from US census microdata and interviews with 22 residents of California’s Central Valley. Results indicate that 5% of rural residents are fully carless and 18% live in a car-deficit household with less than one vehicle per adult. Both zero-car and car-deficit households tend to be in the Central Valley. Zero-car and car-deficit households in rural areas tend to be more socioeconomically disadvantaged than in nonrural areas. Both groups earn lower household incomes, are more likely to be Black, Latino, or Asian, have lower educational attainment, have more disabilities, have higher housing-cost burdens, and are more likely to be unemployed than their counterparts in nonrural areas. Almost half of workers in rural zero-car households drive alone to work compared to about a quarter in nonrural zero-car households, while mode shares are similar for car-deficit and car fully equipped households. Rural zero-car households are more likely to carpool and far less likely to take public transit. Three major themes emerged from the interviews. First, a commonality uniting the interview participants was the practice of relying on their social networks to get rides or obtain vehicle access. Second, the cost of car ownership and operation was high, placing vehicles out of reach for many. Third, alternatives to car access included public transit, medical transportation services, and car sharing, put poor availability often caused individuals to forgo trips. Interview participants shared a variety of options they saw as solutions to overcoming their barriers to lack of car access. While obtaining a vehicle was not absent from their preferred solutions, most preferred better personal access to transportation without the burden of private car ownership. The findings from demonstrate some of the complexities to consider when addressing transportation barriers in rural areas, where carlessness is less prevalent but solutions may be harder to implement than in urban areas.View the NCST Project Webpage

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common maternal mental health issue induced by a combination of biopsychosocial factors, which seriously affects the physical and mental health of mothers and infants. Screening for individual maternal risk factors during pregnancy for predicting PPD will contribute to early identification and treatment of PPD. Many prediction models have been developed and extensively used in the research on the etiology of PPD, and classifying and comparing different types of the models could provide an important reference for selecting a rational method for developing the model, and help to increase the forms of PPD screening and diagnosis.

Background: Famine exposure in childhood is proven to be associated with multiple chornic disease in adult but has not been studied with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Aims: This study was conducted to identify the relationship between famine exposure during infancy and childhood – specifically, the Chinese famine of 1959–1961 – and the risk of adult‐onset chronic kidney disease (CKD) among Chinese individuals. Methods: This study included 2937 individuals from the Qingdao Diabetes Prevention Program. They were stratified by birth year into infancy‐exposed (1956–1958), childhood‐exposed (1950–1955) and unexposed (1963–1971) groups. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. CKD was defined as an eGFR of <90 mL/min/1.73 m2. Results: The mean eGFR values for the infancy‐exposed and childhood‐exposed groups were 107.23 ± 12.53 and 103.23 ± 12.44 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively, both of which were lower than that of the unexposed group (114.82 ± 13.39 mL/min/1.73 m2; P < 0.05). In the crude model, the odds ratio (OR) for CKD was 2.00 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.39–2.88) in the infancy‐exposed group and 2.92 (95% CI: 2.17–3.93) in the childhood‐exposed group. Further adjustments for urban/rural residence, body mass index, age, current smoking, type 2 diabetes, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and total cholesterol did not significantly alter the association between famine exposure and CKD. The corresponding ORs were 1.71 (95% CI: 1.17–2.50) and 2.48 (95% CI: 1.81–3.40) for the infancy‐exposed and childhood‐exposed groups respectively. Conclusions: Famine exposure during infancy and childhood is associated with a long‐term decline in eGFR and an increased adult‐onset CKD risk. We aimed to estimate the associations between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination during pregnancy and the risks of adverse perinatal outcomes. We performed a literature search in PubMed, Web of Science and Embase to identify eligible studies published up to 24 September 2023, yielding 39 included studies. Pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with a random effects model. The pooled results showed that COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy (any type or dose of COVID-19 vaccination during any trimester) was not associated with an increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. In particular, COVID-19 vaccination in the third trimester was associated with a decreased risk of preterm birth (<37 weeks) (RR 0.85 [95% CI 0.74 to 0.98]), 5-min Apgar <7 (RR 0.87 [95% CI 0.78 to 0.97]) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission (RR 0.90 [95% CI 0.86 to 0.95]). The inverse associations were also found in analysis of one-dose vaccination during pregnancy and the risk of miscarriage (RR 0.83 [95% CI 0.72 to 0.96]) and preterm birth (<37 weeks) (RR 0.90 [95% CI 0.80 to 1.00]) and two-dose vaccination during pregnancy and the risk of NICU admission (RR 0.86 [95% CI 0.76 to 0.96]). Herein, we have explored the relation of shadow distance with mask‐substrate gap, as well as the relationship of shadow distance with evaporation angle. The achievements verify the possibility of manufacturing the ultra‐high resolution side by side RGB AMOLEDs with >4000ppi. The leaching solution from the direct reduction-sodium smelting process of ultra-poor vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite contained sodium, vanadium, and impurities. It was carbonated to ensure sodium recovery, and the recovery of vanadium proved challenging. This study proposed and optimized a novel process of extracting vanadium from this alkaline carbonated solution using the transformed organic phase of 20 vol% (0.44 mol/L) Aliquat 336, 8 vol% 2-octanol, and 72 vol% sulfonated kerosene. To achieve superior vanadium extraction, Aliquat 336 in the organic phase was transformed into carbonate type by successively washing with NaHCO3 and NaOH solutions. The single-stage extraction efficiency of vanadium exceeded 85% at a pH of 8.0‒9.0 and an organic-to-aqueous phase ratio of 1:1. The thermodynamics of the vanadium extraction process was examined, confirming that the extraction process is an exothermic reaction (ΔH0 = −9.56 kJ/mol). Furthermore, using a solution of 4 mol/L NH4Cl and 1 mol/L NH4OH with a pH of 8.8 as the effective stripping reagent to realize one-step stripping and precipitation of vanadium, the single-stage stripping efficiency of vanadium was 99.8%, and the precipitation efficiency was about 95%. Through this stripping-precipitation process, solid ammonium metavanadate with a purity of 98.14% was obtained in one step. Few studies have examined dietary protein intake and sources, in combination with longitudinal changes in brain structure markers. Our study aimed to examine the association between dietary protein intake and different sources of dietary protein, with the longitudinal rate of change in brain structural markers. A total of 2723 and 2679 participants from the UK Biobank were separately included in the analysis. The relative and absolute amounts of dietary protein intake were calculated using a 24 h dietary recall questionnaire. The longitudinal change rates of brain structural biomarkers were computed using two waves of brain imaging data. The average interval between the assessments was three years. We utilized multiple linear regression to examine the association between dietary protein and different sources and the longitudinal changes in brain structural biomarkers. Restrictive cubic splines were used to explore nonlinear relationships, and stratified and sensitivity analyses were conducted. Increasing the proportion of animal protein in dietary protein intake was associated with a slower reduction in the total hippocampus volume (THV, β: 0.02524, p < 0.05), left hippocampus volume (LHV, β: 0.02435, p < 0.01) and right hippocampus volume (RHV, β: 0.02544, p < 0.05). A higher intake of animal protein relative to plant protein was linked to a lower atrophy rate in the THV (β: 0.01249, p < 0.05) and LHV (β: 0.01173, p < 0.05) and RHV (β: 0.01193, p < 0.05). Individuals with a higher intake of seafood exhibited a higher longitudinal rate of change in the HV compared to those that did not consume seafood (THV, β: 0.004514; p < 0.05; RHV, β: 0.005527, p < 0.05). In the subgroup and sensitivity analyses, there were no significant alterations. A moderate increase in an individual's intake and the proportion of animal protein in their diet, especially from seafood, is associated with a lower atrophy rate in the hippocampus volume.
