The present study has evaluated different soybean genotypes to understand the salt and drought tolerance mechanisms based on physiological traits (photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll, and cell membrane stability), antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase), reactive oxygen species (H2O2 and O2•−), osmolytes (glycine betaine, proline, and Na+/K+), plant water relations (relative water content, water potential, and solute potential) and expression of related genes (GmCAT1 , GmPOD1 , GmSOD , GmP5CS , GmNHX1 , GmAKT1 , GmDREB1 , and GmARF1). The experiment was conducted in a two-factorial arrangement using randomized complete block design (RCBD) with genotypes as one factor and salt, drought, and control treatments as the other factor. All physiological traits, relative water content, and water potential decreased significantly in all soybean genotypes due to individual and combined treatments of drought and salt stress, with significantly less decrease in soybean genotypes G4620RX, DM45X61, and NARC-21. Besides that, the activity of antioxidant enzymes, production of ROS, accumulation of osmolytes, solute potential, and Na+/K+ ratio were increased significantly in all soybean genotypes under salt and water deficit conditions. As a whole, the soybean genotypes G4620RX, DM45X61, and NARC-21 showed the maximum enzymatic activity with less increase in ROS and Na+/K+ in addition to a high accumulation of osmolytes and an increase in solute potential. Correspondingly, the genotypes exhibiting high physiological and biochemical tolerance to drought and salt stresses showed the high expression of genes imparting the stress tolerance. Moreover, correlation, heatmap, and principal component analysis further confirmed the varying physiological and biochemical responses of all soybean genotypes under individual and combined applications of drought and salinity stresses. Overall, the present study confirmed that plants opt for the integrated physiological, biochemical, and genetic approaches to counteract the harmful effects of environmental stresses. Despite the importance of phosphate and iron in plant nutrition, their combined effects on sugar beet's physiological and biochemical responses to drought stress remain unexplored. This study aims to fill this gap and optimize nutrient management for enhanced drought tolerance. A split-plot design with three irrigation regimes (optimal, mild, and severe stress) as main plots and 6 combinations of two iron (F0 and F5 are 0 and 5 kg/ha, respectively) and three phosphorus (P0, P75, and P150 are 0, 75, and 150 kg/ha, respectively) fertilizers as subplots. Medium (P75) and high (P150) phosphate doses, particularly with iron (Fe5), enhanced antioxidant enzymes, catalase and superoxide dismutase, by up to 72%, photosynthetic efficiency (chlorophyll content, Fv/Fm, photosynthetic rate) by up to 107%, and osmolyte accumulation (proline and soluble sugars) by up to 73%. These treatments improved water relations, increasing relative water content by up to 56%, reducing vapor pressure deficit by up to 57%, and making osmotic potential (ψs) up to 57% less negative. However, oxidative stress (malondialdehyde) increased by up to 200%. Despite this, the improved physiological and biochemical functions enhanced white sugar yield by up to 59% and root yield by up to 56%, highlighting the effectiveness of these treatments in increasing sugar beet productivity under drought stress. In conclusion, medium and high phosphate doses, especially when combined with iron, improved drought tolerance and yield in sugar beet under stress by enhancing antioxidant activities, photosynthetic efficiency, osmolyte accumulation, and water relations while reducing oxidative stress and water loss. The combination of biochar and nitrogen (N) fertilization in agricultural salt-affected soils is an effective strategy for amending the soil and promoting production. To investigate the effect of nitrogen reduction combined with biochar application on a soda saline soil and soybean growth in black soil areas, a pot experiment was set up with two biochar application levels, 0 (B0) and 4.5 t/hm2 (B1); two biochar application depths, 0-20 cm (H1) and 0-40 cm (H2); and two nitrogen application levels, conventional nitrogen application (N0) and nitrogen reduction of 15% (N1). The results showed that the application of biochar improved the saline soil status and significantly increased soybean yield under lower nitrogen application. Moreover, increasing the depth of biochar application enhanced the effectiveness of biochar in reducing saline soil barriers to crop growth, which promoted soybean growth. Increasing the depth of biochar application increased the K+ and Ca2+ contents, soil nitrogen content, N fertilizer agronomic efficiency, leaf total nitrogen, N use efficiency, AN, Tr, gs, SPAD, leaf water potential, water content and soybean yield and its components. However, the Na+ content, SAR, ESP, Na+/K+, Ci and water use efficiency decreased with increasing biochar depth. Among the treatments with low nitrogen input and biochar, B1H1N1 resulted in the greatest soil improvement in the 0-20 cm soil layer compared with B0N0; for example, K+ content increased by 61.87%, Na+ content decreased by 44.80%, SAR decreased by 46.68%, and nitrate nitrogen increased by 26.61%. However, in the 20-40 cm soil layer, B1H2N1 had the greatest effect on improving the soil physicochemical properties, K+ content increased by 62.54%, Na+ content decreased by 29.76%, SAR decreased by 32.85%, and nitrate nitrogen content increased by 30.77%. In addition, compared with B0N0, total leaf nitrogen increased in B1H2N1 by 25.07%, N use efficiency increased by 6.7%, N fertilizer agronomic efficiency increased by 32.79%, partial factor productivity of nitrogen increased by 28.37%, gs increased by 22.10%, leaf water potential increased by 27.33% and water content increased by 6.44%. In conclusion, B1H2N1 had the greatest effect on improving the condition of saline soil; it not only effectively regulated the distribution of salt in soda saline soil and provided a low-salt environment for crop growth but also activated deep soil resources. Therefore, among all treatments investigated in this study, B1H2N1 was considered most suitable for improving the condition of soda saline soil in black soil areas and enhancing the growth of soybean plants. Introduction: Breeding programs have developed high-yielding Coffea arabica F1-hybrids as an adaptation against adverse conditions associated with climate change. However, theresponse to drought of coffee F1 hybrids has seldom been assessed. Methods: A trial was established with five C. arabica genotypes (2 pure lines: Catimor and Marsellesa and 3 F1 hybrids: Starmaya, Centroamericano and Mundo Maya) planted under the leguminous tree species Leuceana leucocephala. Coffee growth, yield and physiological responses were assessed under a rain-fed (control: CON) and a rainfall reduction treatment (RR) for 2 years. Results: The RR treatment created a long-term rainfall deficit in a region with suboptimal temperature similar to those predicted by climate change scenarios. Moreover, the RR treatment reduced soil water content by 14% over 2 successive years of production and increased hydric stress of the three F1-hybrids (leaf water potentials averaged -0.8 MPa under RR compared with -0.4 MPa under CON). Under RR, coffee yields were reduced from 16 to 75% compared to CON. Mundo Maya F1 hybrid was the sole high-yielding genotype apable of sustaining its yield under RR conditions. Our results suggested that its significant increase in fine root density (CON = 300 and RR = 910 root.m-2) and its maintenance of photosynthetic rate (2.5 – 3.5 mmol CO2 m-2 s-1) at high evaporative demand might explain why this genotype maintained high yield under RR condition. Discussion: This work highlights a possible drought tolerance mechanism in fruit bearing adult coffee trees where the plant fine root number increases to intake more water in order to preserve turgor and sustainphotosynthesis at high ETo and therefore conserves high yield in dry conditions. Structural and physiological leaf traits and their plasticity were compared in the hemiepiphyte Vanilla phaeantha. This species grows along a phorophyte reaching different understorey positions and exhibiting diverse responses to environment changes. We analysed three height strata above the ground, establishing a light gradient, and considering seasonal water fluctuations. The upper leaves had higher area and mass and were less pigmented. The dry season induced a reduction of approximately 2 h of stomatal opening over the diel 24 h crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) cycle in the leaves at all understorey positions. The leaves more exposed to sunlight were larger with higher titratable acidity during the rainy season, while the leaves near the ground maintained the same rates of stomatal conductance and nocturnal acidification between seasons, with lowest values of carbon isotopes in the rainy season. Our research showed that some structural leaf traits (such as specific leaf mass, biomass, and saturated water content) are sensitive to variation in understorey position. In contrast, other physiological traits (stomatal conductance, transpiration, and fluorescence parameters) are more sensitive to seasonal variations. The results are a novelty in assessing the variation of CAM along the same plant in a height gradient and under field conditions. Surviving in conditions of water fluctuation and light heterogeneity by plants requires to be plastic. We showed that the hemiepiphyte Vanilla phaeantha adjusts leaf traits and their metabolism for atmospheric CO2 capture in function of the vertical gradient of the understorey (that has different light availability and air humidity), and according to water seasonality. Soil salinity is a significant abiotic stress and poses risks to environmental sustainability. Thus, the improvement of the time for recovering the salt-affect soil is crucial for the phytoextraction process using halophytes plants, especially regarding on nutritional management. We evaluated the responses of Atriplex nummularia Lindl. to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) under different salinity levels. The treatments comprised doses of N (N1 = 80 kg ha−1) and P (P1 = 60 kg ha−1): (1) without N and P (N0P0) (control); (2) with N and without P (N1P0); (3) without N and with P (N0P1); and (4) with N and P (N1P1) and five levels of electrical conductivity from irrigation water: 0.08, 1.7, 4.8, 8.6, and 12.5 dS m−1. The. We evaluated dry biomass of leaves, stems, and roots 93 days after transplantation. We also assessed the leaf and osmotic water potential, the osmotic adjustment, and the nutrient contents (N, P, Na, and K). N application increased 22.3, 17.8, and 32.8% the leaf biomass, stem biomass, and osmotic adjustment, respectively; and consequently, boosts Na extraction in 27.8%. Thus, the time of the phytoextraction process can be improved with N fertilizer at a rate of 80 kg ha−1. Sap is transported through numerous conduits in the xylem of woody plants along the path from the soil to the leaves. When all conduits are functional, vessel lumen diameter is a strong predictor of hydraulic conductivity. As vessels become embolized, sap movement becomes increasingly affected by factors operating at scales beyond individual conduits, creating resistances that result in hydraulic conductivity diverging from diameter‐based estimates. These effects include pit resistances, connectivity, path length, network topology, and vessel or sector isolation. The impact of these factors varies with the level and distribution of emboli within the network, and manifest as alterations in the relationship between the number and diameter of embolized vessels with measured declines in hydraulic conductivity across vulnerability to embolism curves. Divergences between measured conductivity and diameter‐based estimates reveal functional differences that arise because of species‐ and tissue‐specific vessel network structures. Such divergences are not uniform, and xylem tissues may diverge in different ways and to differing degrees. Plants regularly operate under nonoptimal conditions and contain numerous embolized conduits. Understanding the hydraulic implications of emboli within a network and the function of partially embolized networks are critical gaps in our understanding of plants occurring within natural environments. Terrestrial water fluxes are substantially mediated by vegetation, while the distribution, growth, health, and mortality of plants are strongly influenced by the availability of water. These interactions, playing out across multiple spatial and temporal scales, link the disciplines of plant ecophysiology and ecohydrology. Despite this connection, the disciplines have provided complementary, but largely independent, perspectives on the soil‐plant‐atmosphere continuum since their crystallization as modern scientific disciplines in the late 20th century. This review traces the development of the two disciplines, from their respective origins in engineering and ecology, their largely independent growth and maturation, and the eventual development of common conceptual and quantitative frameworks. This common ground has allowed explicit coupling of the disciplines to better understand plant function. Case studies both illuminate the limitations of the disciplines working in isolation, and reveal the exciting possibilities created by consilience between the disciplines. The histories of the two disciplines suggest opportunities for new advances will arise from sharing methodologies, working across multiple levels of complexity, and leveraging new observational technologies. Practically, these exchanges can be supported by creating shared scientific spaces. This review argues that consilience and collaboration are essential for robust and evidence‐based predictions and policy responses under global change. Introduction: Soil drought during summer in Central Europe has become more frequent and severe over the last decades. European forests are suffering increasing damage, particularly Norway spruce. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirbel) Franco), a non-native tree species, is considered as a promising alternative to build drought-resilient forests. The main goal of this study was to investigate the intraannual radial stem growth and sap flow performance of Douglas-fir along a precipitation gradient across Germany under severe drought. Material and methods: Sap flow and stem radial changes of up to ten trees each at four sites with different precipitation regimes were measured in combination with volumetric soil water content during the growing season of 2022. Measurements of stem radial changes were used to calculate the trees' stem water deficit, a proxy for tree water status and drought stress. Results: The severe summer drought of 2022 led to an early growth cessation and a significant reduction in daily sap flow at all four sites monitored. We could identify a site-specific threshold in soil water availability ranging between 21.7 and 29.6% of relative extractable water (REW) under which stem water reserves cannot be replenished and thereby inhibiting radial growth. We could also demonstrate that at this threshold, sap flow is heavily reduced to between 43.5 and 53.3%, and for a REW below 50%, sap flow linearly decreases by 1.1-2.0% per 1% reduction in REW. This reduction tends to follow the humidity gradient, being more pronounced at the most oceanic characterized site and suggesting an adaptation to site conditions. Even though Douglas-fir is considered to be more drought stress resistant than Norway spruce, growth and sap flow are greatly reduced by severe summer drought, which became more frequent in recent years and their frequency and intensity is likely to increase. Conclusions: Our results suggest that timber production of Douglas-fir in Central Europe will decline considerably under projected climate change, and thus pointing to site specific growth constraints for a so far promising non-native tree species in Europe. Hydraulic traits are major determinants of plant fitness, thus exerting control over vegetation structure, function and distribution. Yet it remains unclear whether and how hydraulic traits respond to environmental stimuli (i.e. phenotypic variation of hydraulic traits; PVHT) and if the coordination between different hydraulic traits and the trait–climate relationship are affected by PVHT.Here, we synthesized data of PVHT (maximum hydraulic conductivity and water potential inducing 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity) and potentially related morphological and anatomical traits (e.g. sapwood density, branch Huber value, mean and hydraulic weighted conduit diameter). We analysed the magnitude, direction and source of variation of the plastic response, as well as the influence of environmental factors on trait coordination. Additionally, we compared the intra‐ and inter‐specific variation between key hydraulic traits and climate metrics (mean annual precipitation and mean annual temperature) at the site of growth, as well as across the population range.PVHT was highly variable in both magnitude and direction, which was contingent on the environmental factor. The variation in PVHT mainly occurred at high taxonomic levels (i.e. family and genus), whereas phenology explained little variation for PVHT. Despite the high variability, trait correlation remained robust in the presence of environmental stimuli. Moreover, trait–climate relationships differed at inter‐specific and intra‐specific levels. The intra‐specific variation of hydraulic traits in most species showed no correlation with climate metrics compared with the high correlation of hydraulic traits with climate metrics across species.Our findings suggest that the high variability of PVHT does not affect the trait correlation which may be valuable in predicting vegetation dynamics under varying environments. The distinct trait–climate relationships highlight the need to unravel the driving force of PVHT, as well as the adaptive strategy across populations. The continuous and reliable assessment of crop water status through water indicators enables the sustainable management of water resources, especially in arid or semi-arid climate scenarios exacerbated by climate change. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to determine and compare the sensitivity of indices derived from trunk diameter fluctuations for the accurate and automatic detection of changes in the water status of cherry trees. The water stress indicators examined are maximum daily trunk shrinkage (MDS), trunk growth rate (TGR), early daily trunk shrinkage (EDS), and late daily trunk shrinkage (LDS). During two growing seasons, 'Lapins' sweet cherry trees were subjected to different water stress levels: (i) a control treatment irrigated at 115% of crop evapotranspiration demand to ensure non-limiting water conditions, and (ii) a deficit irrigation treatment, with two irrigation withholding cycles. Vegetative growth was affected by water stress. Trunk daily growth rate and late daily trunk shrinkage exhibited a high variability and did not clearly show differences in plant water status. Both EDS and MDS showed a third-degree polynomial relationship with Ψstem. MDS had a lineal relationship with Ψstem of up to −1.4 MPa; however, further decreases in Ψstem did not necessarily lead to increased MDS. In contrast, EDS became non-linear at −1.8 MPa, making it a more useful plant water indicator than MDS for 'Lapins' sweet cherry trees when detecting severe water stress conditions. The frequencies of both MDS and EDS decreased from 85% to 35% when water stress increased. The C4 Poaceae are a diverse group in terms of both evolutionary lineage and biochemistry. There is a distinct pattern in the distribution of C4 grass groups with aridity; however, the mechanistic basis for this distribution is not well understood. Additionally, few studies have investigated the functional strategies of co‐occurring C4 grass species for dealing with aridity in their natural environments. We explored the coordination of leaf‐level gas exchange, water use, and morphology among five co‐occurring semiarid C4 grasses belonging to divergent clades, biochemical subtypes, and size classes at three sites along a natural aridity gradient. More specifically, we measured predawn and midday water potential, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, and photosynthesis. Leaf tissue was also collected for the analysis of stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen as well as for measurement of specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf width. Species differences in responsiveness of stomata to changes in vapor pressure deficit (VPD) were also assessed. It was expected that NAD‐me species would maintain higher rates of photosynthesis, higher water use efficiency, and have more responsive stomata than other co‐occurring species based on observed biogeographic patterns and past greenhouse studies. We found that Aristidoideae and Chloridoideae NAD‐me‐type grasses had greater stomatal sensitivity to VPD, consistent with a more isohydric strategy. However, midgrasses had both greater apparent water access and water use efficiency, regardless of subtype or lineage. PCK‐type species had less responsive stomata and maintained lower levels of photosynthesis with increasing aridity. There were strong interspecific differences in δ13C, leaf width, and SLA; however, these were not significantly correlated with water use efficiency. C4 grasses in our study did not fit discretely into functional groups as defined by lineage, biochemistry, or size class. Interspecific differences, evolutionary legacy, and biochemical pathway are likely to interact to determine water use and photosynthetic strategies of these plants. Control of water loss via highly responsive stomata may form the basis for dominance of certain C4 grass groups in arid environments. Drought presents a major risk to wheat growth and productivity under changing climates. During the last few years, various morphological and physiological approaches were used to overcome drought stress-associated problems. Cultivation of tolerant wheat cultivars can serve as a sustainable choice to raise wheat yield under water stress. Herein, field trials were carried out at the experimental farm of Ismailia Agricultural Research Station, Egypt, in two successive growing seasons (2020/2021 and 2021/2022) to investigate the response of four Egyptian bread wheat cultivars (Misr 1, Misr 3, Giza 171, and Sakha 95) to drought stress according to morpho-physiological characteristics, yield, and stress indices. Irrigation treatments and cultivars were assigned to the main and sub-plots, consequently, in a split-plot design with three replicates. The findings revealed that in both the first and second seasons, drought drastically revoked growth vigor of shoot, growth vigor of flag leaf, relative water content (%), membrane stability index (%), photosynthetic pigments, heading (days), maturity (days), as well as yield and yield attributes: spike length, number of spikes/m2, spike weight, grain number/spike, 100-kernel weight, grain yield/m2, straw yield/m2, biological yield/m2, and harvest index of all four wheat cultivars. Conversely, drought caused a marked increase in saturation water deficit (%), carotenoids content, and NKP uptake of all four wheat cultivars in both study seasons. The current study found that all four of the wheat cultivars were drought-tolerant plants. These cultivars exhibited similar drought-tolerant behaviors, which included decreased loss in relative water content, membrane stability, and photosynthetic pigment levels, consequently reducing wheat grain yield loss under water stress. Additionally, the drought tolerance indices of Sakha 95 > Giza 171 > Misr 1 > Misr 3 were revealed by the stress sensitivity index (SSI), mean productivity (MP), stress tolerance index (STI), and yield stability index (YSI). In conclusion, Misr 3 was the least tolerant wheat cultivar and Sakha 95 was the most tolerant. These results can be applied to breeding programs by plant breeders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stomatal anatomy and behaviour are key to managing gas exchange fluxes, which require coordination with the plant vascular system to adequately supply leaves with water. Stomatal response times and regulation of water loss are generally understudied in ferns, especially across habits (i.e. epiphytic and terrestrial) and habitats (i.e. wet mesic and dry xeric environments). Our objectives were to (i) determine if hydraulic and anatomical traits that control water use are correlated with their habitats (i.e. xeric, mesic) and habits (i.e. epiphytic, terrestrial) for ferns and lycophytes across taxa, and (ii) explore how those traits and others like average leaf water residence time correlate with stomatal function using a subset of closely related species. Epiphytic species had lower vein densities than terrestrial species, while xeric species had higher vein densities than mesic species. Xeric ferns also had smaller stomata than mesic ferns but had similar stomatal densities. Further, in a subset of mesic and xeric ferns, the xeric ferns had higher maximum stomatal conductance and water content, as well as shorter average stomatal opening responses to light intensity, but stomatal closing times did not differ. Finally, shorter stomatal opening and closing responses were correlated with shorter water residence time. Our study highlights anatomical and physiological differences between ferns and lycophytes, which may partially explain habitat preference based on their optimization of light and water. Disease severity and drought due to climate change present significant challenges to orchard productivity. This study examines the effects of spring inoculation with Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (Pss) on sweet cherry plants, cvs. Bing and Santina with varying defense responses, assessing plant growth, physiological variables (water potential, gas exchange, and plant hydraulic conductance), and the levels of abscisic acid (ABA) and salicylic acid (SA) under two summer irrigation levels. Pss inoculation elicited a more pronounced response in 'Santina' compared to 'Bing' at 14 days post-inoculation (dpi), and those plants inoculated with Pss exhibited a slower leaf growth and reduced transpiration compared to control plants during 60 dpi. During differential irrigations, leaf area was reduced 14% and 44% in Pss inoculated plants of 'Bing' and 'Santina' respectively, under well-watered (WW) conditions, without changes in plant water status or gas exchange. Conversely, water-deficit (WD) conditions led to gas exchange limitations and a 43% decrease in plant biomass compared to that under WW conditions, with no differences between inoculation treatments. ABA levels were lower under WW than under WD at 90 dpi, while SA levels were significantly higher in Pss-inoculated plants under WW conditions. These findings underscore the influence on plant growth during summer in sweet cherry cultivars that showed a differential response to Pss inoculations and how the relationship between ABA and SA changes in plant drought level responses. Summary: Understanding the capacity of temperate trees to acclimate to limited soil water has become essential in the face of increasing drought risk due to climate change. We documented seasonal – or phenological – patterns in acclimation to water deficit stress in stems and leaves of tree species spanning the angiosperm phylogeny.Over 3 yr of field observations carried out in two US arboreta, we measured stem vulnerability to embolism (36 individuals of 7 Species) and turgor loss point (119 individuals of 27 species) over the growing season. We also conducted a growth chamber experiment on 20 individuals of one species to assess the mechanistic relationship between soil water restriction and acclimation.In three‐quarters of species measured, plants became less vulnerable to embolism and/or loss of turgor over the growing season. We were able to stimulate this acclimatory effect by withholding water in the growth chamber experiment.Temperate angiosperms are capable of acclimation to soil water deficit stress, showing maximum vulnerability to soil water deficits following budbreak and becoming more resilient to damage over the course of the growing season or in response to simulated drought. Knowledge of how certain crops respond to water stress is one of the prerequisites for choosing the best variety and best management practices to maximize crop water productivity (WPc). The selection of a more efficient protocol for managing irrigation depths throughout the cultivation cycle and in the maturation process at the end of the growth period for each sugarcane variety can maximize bioethanol productivity and WPc for bioethanol, sugar and biomass, in addition to the total energy captured by the sugarcane canopy in the form of dry biomass. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of four irrigation depths and four water deficit intensities on the maturation phase for eight sugarcane varieties under drip irrigation, analyzing the responses related to WPc for bioethanol, sugar and biomass. These experiments were conducted at the University of São Paulo. The plots were positioned in three randomized blocks, and the treatments were distributed in a factorial scheme (4 × 8 × 4). The treatments involved eight commercial varieties of sugarcane and included four water replacement levels and four water deficits of increasing intensity in the final phase of the crop season. It was found that for each variety of sugarcane, there was an optimal combination of irrigation management strategies throughout the cycle and during the maturation process. The RB966928 variety resulted in the best industrial bioethanol yield (68.7 L·Mg−1), WPc for bioethanol (0.97 L·m−3) and WPc for sugar (1.71 kg·m−3). The energy of the aerial parts partitioned as sugar had a direct positive correlation with the availability of water in the soil for all varieties. The RB931011 variety showed the greatest potential for converting water into shoots with an energy of 1.58 GJ·ha−1·mm−1, while the NCo376 variety had the lowest potential at 1.32 GJ·ha−1·mm−1. The productivity of first-generation bioethanol had the highest values per unit of planted area for the greatest water volumes applied and transpired by each variety; this justifies keeping soil moisture at field capacity until harvesting time only for WR100 water replacement level with a maximum ethanol potential of 13.27 m3·ha−1. Physiological water stress induced by low root temperatures might contribute to species‐specific climatic limits of tree distribution. We investigated the low temperature sensitivity of root water uptake and transport in seedlings of 16 European tree species which reach their natural upper elevation distribution limits at different distances to the alpine treeline. We used 2H‐H2O pulse‐labelling to quantify the water uptake and transport velocity from roots to leaves in seedlings exposed to constant 15°C, 7°C or 2°C root temperature, but identical aboveground temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. In all species, low root temperatures reduced the water transport rate, accompanied by reduced stem water potentials and stomatal conductance. At 7°C root temperature, the relative water uptake rates among species correlated positively with the species‐specific upper elevation limits, indicating an increasingly higher sensitivity to lower root zone temperatures, the lower a species' natural elevational distribution limit. Conversely, 2°C root temperature severely inhibited water uptake in all species, irrespective of the species' thermal elevational limits. We conclude that low temperature‐induced hydraulic constraints contribute to the cold distribution limits of temperate tree species and are a potential physiological cause behind the low temperature limits of plant growth in general. Summary statement: Our experiment reveals a relationship between the cold sensitivity of root water uptake and the elevational distribution limits of temperate tree species. Studies on obligate halophytes combining eco-physiological techniques and proteomic analysis are crucial for understanding salinity tolerance mechanisms but are limited. We thus examined growth, water relations, ion homeostasis, photosynthesis, oxidative stress mitigation and proteomic responses of an obligate halophyte Suaeda fruticosa to increasing salinity under semi-hydroponic culture. Most biomass parameters increased under moderate (300 mmol L−1 of NaCl) salinity, while high (900 mmol L−1 of NaCl) salinity caused some reduction in biomass parameters. Under moderate salinity, plants showed effective osmotic adjustment with concomitant accumulation of Na+ in both roots and leaves. Accumulation of Na+ did not accompany nutrient deficiency, damage to photosynthetic machinery and oxidative damage in plants treated with 300 mmol L−1 of NaCl. Under high salinity, plants showed further decline in sap osmotic potential with higher Na+ accumulation that did not coincide with a decline in relative water content, Fv/Fm, and oxidative damage markers (H2O2 and MDA). There were 22, 54 and 7 proteins in optimal salinity and 29, 46 and 8 proteins in high salinity treatment that were up-regulated, down-regulated or exhibited no change, respectively, as compared to control plants. These data indicate that biomass reduction in S. fruticosa at high salinity might result primarily from increased energetic cost rather than ionic toxicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Characterisation of the structure and water status of leaf tissues is essential to the understanding of leaf hydraulic functioning under optimal and stressed conditions. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is unique in its capacity to access this information in a spatially resolved, non-invasive and non-destructive way. The purpose of this study was to develop an original approach based on transverse relaxation mapping by Magnetic Resonance Imaging for the detection of changes in water status and distribution at cell and tissue levels in Brassica napus leaves during blade development and dehydration. Results By combining transverse relaxation maps with a classification scheme, we were able to distinguish specific zones of areoles and veins. The tissue heterogeneity observed in young leaves still occurred in mature and senescent leaves, but with different distributions of T2 values in accordance with the basipetal progression of leaf blade development, revealing changes in tissue structure. When subjected to severe water stress, all blade zones showed similar behaviours. Conclusion This study demonstrates the great potential of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in assessing information on the structure and water status of leaves. The feasibility of in planta leaf measurements was demonstrated, opening up many opportunities for the investigation of leaf structure and hydraulic functioning during development and/or in response to abiotic stresses.

Summary: Turgor loss point (TLP) is an important proxy for plant drought tolerance, species habitat suitability, and drought‐induced plant mortality risk. Thus, TLP serves as a critical tool for evaluating climate change impacts on plants, making it imperative to develop high‐throughput and in situ methods to measure TLP.We developed hyperspectral pressure–volume curves (PV curves) to estimate TLP using leaf spectral reflectance. We used partial least square regression models to estimate water potential (Ψ) and relative water content (RWC) for two species, Frangula caroliniana and Magnolia grandiflora. RWC and Ψ's model for each species had R2 ≥ 0.7 and %RMSE = 7–10. We constructed PV curves with model estimates and compared the accuracy of directly measured and spectra‐predicted TLP.Our findings indicate that leaf spectral measurements are an alternative method for estimating TLP. F. caroliniana TLP's values were −1.62 ± 0.15 (means ± SD) and −1.62 ± 0.34 MPa for observed and reflectance predicted, respectively (P > 0.05), while M. grandiflora were −1.78 ± 0.34 and −1.66 ± 0.41 MPa (P > 0.05).The estimation of TLP through leaf reflectance‐based PV curves opens a broad range of possibilities for future research aimed at understanding and monitoring plant water relations on a large scale with spectral ecophysiology. This work assessed the alleviating effects of bacteria (Bacillus subtilis) and phosphorus as environmentally friendly materials on the cultivation of pepper plants in polluted soil with lead (Pb) in forms of PbSO4, and Pb(NO3)2 at rates of 0, 1000, 2000 and 3000 mg Pb/g soil. Pot experiments were conducted to study the growth parameters, some physiological factors, biochemical constituents, and yield attributes, as well as the tolerance index (TI), translocation factor (TF), bioconcentration factor (BCF), and health effects [daily intake of heavy metals (DIM), health risk index (HRI), and carcinogenic risk (CR)]. Increasing the Pb concentration of all Pb salt used in soil severely affected the plant vegetative growth parameters. In comparison with other Pb salt forms, Pb(NO3)2 salt had a strong inhibitory impact. Additionally, the photosynthetic pigments in leaves were negatively impacted by all Pb salt forms. The application of Pb in all salt forms led to changes in the leaf water deficit (LWD), osmotic pressure, and membrane integrity and decreased the total water content, relative water content (RWC), transpiration rate, and leaf succulence. Pollution with Pb salts considerably decreased the yield constituents and various chemical properties of pepper, more so in the presence of Pb nitrate than in the presence of Pb sulfate type. A comparison of the concentration of Pb presence of Pb nitrate was greatly increased than the Pb sulfate in the whole plants. The safe limit of 0.3 mg/kg was exceeded by the Pb concentration in pepper fruits (6.3 and 4.3 mg/kg) cultivated in Pb-contaminated soil [with Pb(NO3)2 and PbSO4, respectively]. Additionally, Pb sulfate had a greater detrimental effect on Pb uptake in several plant organs than other Pb salt forms. The TI of pepper plants treated with salt types was >60% with PbSO4 (75.6%), whereas it was <60% with Pb(NO3)2 (35.2%). The BCF values of pepper plants in the polluted Pb soils varied from 0.10 to 0.41, indicating a moderate accumulator plant. At every level of Pb contamination with all Pb salt types, the sequence of Pb TF values was as follows: roots (TFr) > shoots (TFsh) > fruits (TFf), with TF values < 1. When compared with TFr and TFsh, TFs for shoot to fruits (TFf) had the lowest values (range, 0.07–0.22). The DIM, HRI, and CR values of pepper plants revealed that the Pb of fruit of stressed pepper plants is within safe limits. In addition to reducing the detrimental effects of intolerable Pb levels (2000 and 3000 mg Pb/g soil) on the majority of the aforementioned characters, adding Bacillus bacteria as a bio-agent and phosphorus as a chemo-agent to Pb-polluted soils also stimulated growth, increased yield, controlled plant water relations, protected photosynthetic pigments, and sharply decreased the Pb accumulation in plant organs. The Bacillus bacteria application resulted in some superior characteristics, such as root length, leaf number, leaf length, leaf area, leaf area index, fresh biomass, dry biomass, photosynthetic pigments, quantity yield attributes, reduction Pb accumulation in all plant organs, TI, TFr, TFf, BCF, in health effects trials, whereas phosphorus application improved plant height, leaf width, RWC, LWD, osmotic pressure, total soluble solids, acidity, total carbohydrates, total protein, and TFsh. Salinity is one of the most significant abiotic stress that affects the growth and development of high-value tree species, including sandalwood, which can also be managed effectively on saline soils with the help of suitable host species. Therefore, the current investigation was conducted to understand the physiological processes and antioxidant mechanisms in sandalwood along the different salinity gradients to explore the host species that could support sandalwood growth in salt-affected agro-ecosystems. Sandalwood seedlings were grown with ten diverse host species with saline water irrigation gradients (ECiw~3, 6, and 9 dS m−1) and control (ECiw~0.82 dS m−1). Experimental findings indicate a decline in the chlorophyll content (13–33%), relative water content (3–23%), photosynthetic (27–61%) and transpiration rate (23–66%), water and osmotic potential (up to 137%), and ion dynamics (up to 61%) with increasing salinity levels. Conversely, the carotenoid content (23–43%), antioxidant activity (up to 285%), and membrane injury (82–205%) were enhanced with increasing salinity stress. Specifically, among the hosts, Dalbergia sissoo and Melia dubia showed a minimum reduction in chlorophyll content, relative water content, and plant water relation and gas exchange parameters of sandalwood plants. Surprisingly, most of the host tree species maintained K+/Na+ of sandalwood up to moderate water salinity of ECiw~6 dS m−1; however, a further increase in water salinity decreased the K+/Na+ ratio of sandalwood by many-fold. Salinity stress also enhanced the antioxidative enzyme activity, although the maximum increase was noted with host plants M. dubia, followed by D. sissoo and Azadirachta indica. Overall, the investigation concluded that sandalwood with the host D. sissoo can be successfully grown in nurseries using saline irrigation water and, with the host M. dubia, it can be grown using good quality irrigation water. Climate change (CC) threatens Mediterranean viticulture. Rhizospheric microorganisms may be crucial for the adaptation of plants to CC. Our objective was to assess whether the association of two grapevine varieties with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) increases grapevine's resilience to environmental conditions that combine elevated atmospheric CO2, increased air temperatures, and water deficit. Tempranillo (T) and Cabernet Sauvignon (CS) plants, grafted onto R110 rootstocks, either inoculated (+M) or not (−M) with AMF, were grown in temperature-gradient greenhouses under two environmental conditions: (i) current conditions (ca. 400 ppm air CO2 concentration plus ambient air temperature, CATA) and (ii) climate change conditions predicted by the year 2100 (700 ppm of CO2 plus ambient air temperature +4 °C, CETE). From veraison to maturity, for plants of each variety, inoculation treatment and environmental conditions were also subjected to two levels of water availability: full irrigation (WW) or drought cycles (D). Therefore, the number of treatments applied to each grapevine variety was eight, resulting from the combination of two inoculation treatments (+M and −M), two environmental conditions (CATA and CETE), and two water availabilities (WW and D). In both grapevine varieties, early drought decreased leaf conductance and transpiration under both CATA and CETE conditions and more markedly in +M plants. Photosynthesis did not decrease very much, so the instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE) increased, especially in drought +M plants under CETE conditions. The increase in WUE coincided with a lower intercellular-to-atmospheric CO2 concentration ratio and reduced plant hydraulic conductance. In the long term, mycorrhization induced changes in the stomatal anatomy under water deficit and CETE conditions: density increased in T and decreased in CS, with smaller stomata in the latter. Although some responses were genotype-dependent, the interaction of the rootstock with AMF appeared to be a key factor in the acclimation of the grapevine to water deficit under both current and future CO2 and temperature conditions. Fruit mass and sugar content are important quality attributes of apple and pear fruit. During fruit growth, water and sugars accumulate as a result of the coordination of water and solid fluxes. This causes expansive growth driven by turgor pressure and controlled by cell mechanical properties. To analyse the effect of environmental conditions on fruit growth dynamics, a biophysical model of apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) and pear (Pyrus communis L.) fruit growth was developed and adapted from the Fishman-Génard model. Dynamically changing patterns of average fruit fresh mass, dry mass and soluble solid mass in response to the environmental conditions during multiple seasons of varying environmental conditions were well captured by a parameterised model for apple and pear fruit growth. Sensitivity analyses showed that the model was most sensitive to variations in parameters related to active transport, cell wall extensibility and plant water status. The model enabled the analysis of how fruit growth dynamics were affected by stress conditions. Climate extremes and biotic interactions at the neighbourhood scale affect tropical forest dynamics with long‐term consequences for biodiversity, global carbon cycling and climate change mitigation. However, forest disturbance may change crowding intensity, and thus the relative contribution of climate extremes and neighbourhood interactions on tree growth, thereby influencing tropical forest resistance and resilience to climate change. Here, we aim to evaluate the separate and interactive effects of climate and neighbours on tree growth in old‐growth and disturbed tropical forests.We used 30 years of growth measurements for over 300 tropical tree species from 15 forest plots in French Guiana to investigate the separate and interactive effects of climate anomalies (in solar radiation, maximum temperature, vapour pressure deficit and climatic water deficit) and neighbourhood crowding on individual tree growth. Contrasting old‐growth and selectively logged forests, we also examined how disturbance history affects tree growth sensitivity to climate and neighbours. Finally, for the most abundant 100 species, we evaluated the role of 12 functional traits pertaining to water relations, light and carbon use in mediating tree growth sensitivity to climate anomalies, neighbourhood crowding and their interactions.Climate anomalies tied to heat and drought stress and neighbourhood crowding independently reduced tree growth, and showed positive interactive effects which attenuated their separate effects on tree growth. Their separate and interactive effects were stronger in disturbed than undisturbed forests. Fast‐growing species (i.e. higher intrinsic growth rates) were more abundant in disturbed forests and more sensitive to climate anomalies and neighbourhood crowding. Traits related to water relations, light and carbon use captured species sensitivities to different climate anomalies and neighbourhood crowding levels but were weak predictors of their interactions.Synthesis: Our results demonstrate that climate anomalies and neighbourhood crowding can interact to shape tropical tree growth, suggesting that considering the biotic context may improve predictions of tropical forest dynamics facing altered climate regimes. Furthermore, species traits can capture tree growth sensitivity to the separate effects of climate and neighbours, suggesting that better representing leading functional dimensions in tropical tree strategies offers a promising way towards a better understanding of the underlying ecological mechanisms that govern tropical forest dynamics. Increasing evidence supports a major role for abiotic stress response in the success of plant polyploids, which usually thrive in harsh environments. However, understanding the ecophysiology of polyploids is challenging due to interactions between genome doubling and natural selection. Here, we investigated physiological responses, gene expression, and the epiphenotype of two related Dianthus broteri cytotypes—with different genome duplications (4× and 12×) and evolutionary trajectories—to short extreme temperature events (42/28 °C and 9/5 °C). The 12× cytotype showed higher expression of stress-responsive genes (SWEET1 , PP2C16 , AI5L3 , and ATHB7) and enhanced gas exchange compared with 4×. Under heat stress, both ploidies had greatly impaired physiological performance and altered gene expression, with reduced cytosine methylation. However, the 12× cytotype exhibited remarkable physiological tolerance (maintaining gas exchange and water status via greater photochemical integrity and probably enhanced water storage) while down-regulating PP2C16 expression. Conversely, 4× D. broteri was susceptible to thermal stress despite prioritizing water conservation, showing signs of non-stomatal photosynthetic limitations and irreversible photochemical damage. This cytotype also presented gene-specific expression patterns under heat, up-regulating ATHB7. These findings provide insights into divergent stress response strategies and physiological resistance resulting from polyploidy, highlighting its widespread influence on plant function. Quinoa is a super food, climate resilient crop which can be grown on salt affected soils, but the seed produced in sat affected soil show poor germination and vigour. A study comprising of pot and field experiment with two salinity levels, normal (less than 4 dS m−1), saline (15 dS m−1) and four potassium doses 50, 75, 100, 125 kg ha−1 was conducted to evaluate the effect of potassium application on plant growth, physiology, water relations and seed quality of quinoa CV. (UAF-Q7). Soil application of potassium @125 kg ha−1 increased plant height and panicle length in both experiments. Transpiration rate, water use efficiency, chlorophyll content index and photosynthetic rate also improved in normal and saline soil. Similarly, plant water relations including osmotic potential, water potential, relative water contents, seed yield and seed germination (82%) also improved by application of application of potassium @125 kg ha−1. Sodium ion concentration in quinoa seed decreased (21.66 ppm) and potassium concentration increased (43.95 ppm) while no significant change in calcium was observed by the application of potassium. In conclusion, soil application of potassium @125 kg ha−1 not only improves growth, physiology, and yield attributes but also seed quality of quinoa in both normal and salt affected soil. Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.), has its origin in the Amazon and is usually grown under the shade of trees and or in full sun exposure. This variability in light conditions makes physiological responses different between cocoa cultivars. In the coming decades, an inevitable increase in global temperature is expected. By 2050, it is estimated that in the Latin American tropical region these increases will lead to reductions in precipitation greater than 10%, that is, we will have drier environments, which will undoubtedly affect cocoa cultivation. There is uncertainty in the possible effects of changes in temperature on cocoa due to the lack of information and the few cultivars that have been evaluated. The information collected in this review serves as a basis for understanding the responses of cocoa to light and temperature conditions and it is undeniable that more research is required to achieve a greater understanding of the complexities of climate changes and their effects on cocoa production. The scarcity of water resources affects tomato production. Deficit irrigation may optimize water management with only a low reduction in yield. Deficit irrigation scheduling based on applied water presented no clear conclusions. Water stress management based on plant water status, such as water potential, could improve the scheduling. The aim of this work was to evaluate the physiological and yield responses of different tomato cultivars to deficit irrigation. Three experiments were carried out in 2020 and 2022 at the University of Seville (Spain). "Cherry" and "chocolate Marmande" cultivars with an indeterminate growth pattern were grown in a greenhouse. Treatments were: Control (full irrigated) and Deficit. Deficit plants were irrigated based on water potential measurements. Moderate water stress did not significantly reduce the yield, although it affected other processes. Fruit size and total soluble solids were the most sensitive parameters to water stress. The latter increased only when persistent water stress was applied. However, truss development and fruit number were not affected by the level of water stress imposed. Such results suggest that moderate water stress, even in sensitive phenological stages such as flowering, would not reduce yield. Summary: Limitations and utility of three measures of water use characteristics were evaluated: water use efficiency (WUE), intrinsic WUE and marginal water cost of carbon gain (∂E/∂A) estimated, respectively, as ratios of assimilation (A) to transpiration (E), of A to stomatal conductance (gs) and of sensitivities of E and A with variation in gs. Only the measure ∂E/∂A estimates water use strategy in a way that integrates carbon gain relative to water use under varying environmental conditions across scales from leaves to communities. This insight provides updated and simplified ways of estimating ∂E/∂A and adds depth to understanding ways that plants balance water expenditure against carbon gain, uniquely providing a mechanistic means of predicting water use characteristics under changing environmental scenarios. For wheat (Triticum aestivum), sustained crop yield at limited soil water availability has been linked to osmotic adjustment (OA) – a physiological mechanism that aids maintenance of leaf hydration status, turgor (P) and growth. 'Canada Western Red Spring' (CWRS) wheat cultivars are typically grown in rainfed areas with milder climates, but ongoing climate change is increasesing the frequency and intensity of drought events. The overarching goal of this study was to elucidate if commercially used CWRS cultivars ('Superb', 'Stettler', 'AAC Viewfield') have the ability for leaf OA. Measurements of leaf water relation parameters (water potential, Ψ ; solute potential, Ψ s; stomatal conductance, g s; relative water content, RWC) showed that all three cultivars reached zero P (= Ψ – Ψ s) at a leaf Ψ of −1.1 MPa. Prior to that, P maintenance in 'Superb' and 'AAC Viewfield' was associated with a significant reduction in leaf Ψ s and OA contributed 0.53 MPa ('Superb') and 0.73 MPa ('AAC Viewfield'). Our data analyses provided no support for the existence of OA in 'Stettler'. Under water deficit, leaf g s was significantly higher in 'AAC Viewfield' compared to 'Stettler'; it was intermediate in 'Superb'. Together, drought tolerance in CWRS wheat cultivars is most likely linked to the degree of OA. 'Canada Western Red Spring' wheat cultivars are typically grown in rainfed areas with milder climates, but drought is increasing with climate change. Wheat can maintain yield under dry conditions through the physiological mechanism of osmotic adjustment. Polylepis trees occur throughout the Andean mountain region, and it is the tree genus that grows at the highest elevation worldwide. In the humid Andes where moisture is rarely limiting, Polylepis trees must adapt to extreme environmental conditions, especially rapid fluctuations in temperature, ultraviolet radiation and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). However, Polylepis ' water-use patterns remain largely unknown despite the importance of understanding their response to microclimate variation to determine their capacity to maintain resilience under future environmental change. We conducted a study in a Polylepis reticulata Kunth forest in the Ecuadorian Andes to evaluate its tree water-use dynamics and to identify the main environmental drivers of transpiration. Tree sap flow was monitored simultaneously with soil volumetric water content (VWC) and microclimate during 2 years for trees growing in forest edge and interior locations. We found that sap flow was primarily controlled by VPD and that VWC exerted a secondary role in driving sap flow dynamics. The highest values for sap flow rates were found when VPD > 0.15 kPa and VCW < 0.73 cm3 cm−3, but these threshold conditions only occurred during brief periods of time and were only found in 11% of our measurements. Moreover, these brief windows of more favorable conditions occurred more frequently in forest edge compared with forest interior locations, resulting in edge trees maintaining 46% higher sap flow compared with interior trees. Our results also suggest that P. reticulata has a low stomatal control of transpiration, as the sap flow did not decline with increasing VPD. This research provides valuable information about the potential impacts of projected future increases in VPD due to climate change on P. reticulata water-use dynamics, which include higher sap flow rates leading to greater transpirational water loss due to this species' poor stomatal control. Water stress and ethylene damage often cause early senescence symptoms in various cut flower species during the vase period, as indicated by symptoms such as leaf/flower wilting or bent neck. This shortens the vase life of cut flowers, which limits their profitability. Here, combined treatment with nano silver and aminoethoxyvinylglycine (NS + AVG) was evaluated as a novel control strategy to reduce water deficit stress and ethylene damage in the three cut flower species. The effectiveness of NS + AVG was compared with those of the control (CON) and individual treatments with two commercial preservatives (Chrysal and Floralife). NS + AVG delayed the symptoms of senescence and extended the longevity of cut flowers by 4.5 d (carnations), 3.2 d (lisianthus), and 3.0 d (roses), compared with those of flowers in the CON group. Compared with Chrysal and Floralife, NS + AVG was more effective in prolonging the postharvest life of cut flowers. NS + AVG also improved the fresh weight and solution uptake of cut flowers during the vase period, compared with those of CON flowers. NS + AVG prevented water stress and increased the mRNA levels of aquaporin-related genes in the petals of cut flowers, which helped maintain cell turgor and improved flower opening. NS + AVG effectively reduced ethylene damage by suppressing the mRNA levels of ethylene biosynthesis-related genes in the petals of cut roses and carnations. NS + AVG also reduced the transcript levels of senescence-related genes (DcCP1 and RhSIG) and promoted a senescence-inhibiting gene (DcCPi) in the petals of cut carnation and rose flowers, thus delaying petal senescence. Disease severity and drought due to climate change present significant challenges to orchard productivity. This study examines the effects of spring inoculation with Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (Pss) on sweet cherry plants, cvs. Bing and Santina with varying defense responses, assessing plant growth, physiological variables (water potential, gas exchange, and plant hydraulic conductance), and the levels of abscisic acid (ABA) and salicylic acid (SA) under two summer irrigation levels. Pss inoculation elicited a more pronounced response in ‘Santina’ compared to ‘Bing’ at 14 days post-inoculation (dpi), and those plants inoculated with Pss exhibited a slower leaf growth and reduced transpiration compared to control plants during 60 dpi. During differential irrigations, leaf area was reduced 14% and 44% in Pss inoculated plants of ‘Bing’ and ‘Santina’ respectively, under well-watered (WW) conditions, without changes in plant water status or gas exchange. Conversely, water-deficit (WD) conditions led to gas exchange limitations and a 43% decrease in plant biomass compared to that under WW conditions, with no differences between inoculation treatments. ABA levels were lower under WW than under WD at 90 dpi, while SA levels were significantly higher in Pss-inoculated plants under WW conditions. These findings underscore the influence on plant growth during summer in sweet cherry cultivars that showed a differential response to Pss inoculations and how the relationship between ABA and SA changes in plant drought level responses.

Species’ drought resistance is determined by a combination of multiple traits and their plastic response. However, a clear understanding of how these traits are coordinated and modulate plant responses to drought is still lacking.Here we used a water exclusion experiment on 20 Mediterranean woody species to evaluate a new framework to study plant drought responses, in which relatively constant functional traits modulate the physiological responses to a given drought exposure. In particular, we assessed how the response of stomatal conductance (Gs), leaf relative water content (RWC) and leaf water potential difference (ΔΨ) to leaf predawn water potential (Ψpd) were modulated by commonly used functional traits. The latter included hydraulic and water relations attributes such as turgor loss point in leaves (Ψtlp), vulnerability to xylem embolism in stems (Ψ50), hydraulic conductivity per unit sapwood (Ks), hydraulic conductivity per unit leaf area (Kl, hydraulic sufficiency) and Huber value (Hv), as well as specific leaf area (SLA) as a proxy for the leaf economics spectrum.Our results show that functional traits are highly coordinated, defining two main axes: the first related to drought tolerance and resource-use strategies and the second characterising the hydraulic sufficiency of leaves. These two axes, as well as many of the underlying functional traits, showed a significant interaction with Ψpd in explaining physiological responses to drought, thus modulating Gs, RWC, and ΔΨ responses. Drought-tolerant species showed a less stringent regulation of water use and leaf water potential but were more effective at regulating leaf RWC. Also, the leaf water potential at turgor loss (Ψtlp) emerged as an important trait orchestrating plant responses to drought.This study highlights that a clear separation between slow-varying traits (Ψtlp, Ψ50, Ks, Kl, Hv, SLA), physiological responses (Gs, RWC, ΔΨ) and tissue-level exposure to drought (Ψpd) improves our understanding of plant drought resistance strategies.

A comprehensive characterization of water stress is needed for the development of automated irrigation protocols aiming to increase olive orchard environmental and economical sustainability. The main aim of this study is to determine whether a combination of continuous leaf turgor, fruit growth, and sap flow responses improves the detection of mild water stress in two olive cultivars characterized by different responses to water stress. The sensitivity of the tested indicators to mild stress depended on the main mechanisms that each cultivar uses to cope with water deficit. One cultivar showed pronounced day to day changes in leaf turgor and fruit relative growth rate in response to water withholding. The other cultivar reduced daily sap flows and showed a pronounced tendency to reach very low values of leaf turgor. Based on these responses, the sensitivity of the selected indicators is discussed in relation to drought response mechanisms, such as stomatal closure, osmotic adjustment, and tissue elasticity. The analysis of the daily dynamics of the monitored parameters highlights the limitation of using non-continuous measurements in drought stress studies, suggesting that the time of the day when data is collected has a great influence on the results and consequent interpretations, particularly when different genotypes are compared. Overall, the results highlight the need to tailor plant-based water management protocols on genotype-specific physiological responses to water deficit and encourage the use of combinations of plant-based continuously monitoring sensors to establish a solid base for irrigation management.

The article deals with the problems of sharing water, water resources management, protection of water resources in transboundary river basins. Discussed are the contradictions of the Central Asian countries in their approaches to solving water problems, depending on the geographical features of their location and the geopolitical situation in the region. On the example of the transboundary river Syrdarya, an analysis of the signed intergovernmental agreements and the mechanism of water allocation, an analysis of the fulfillment of interstate obligations on water allocation was carried out. It is shown that for the period from 1992 to 2019 the actual inflow into the territory of Kazakhstan along the Syrdarya river has always been above the established limit in annual terms, however, during the growing season, when water is needed for irrigation of crops, the share of water inflow was only a third of the annual volume, which does not meet the criterion of fair water allocation. Water supply through interstate canal over the same period was consistently below the agreed limit, i.e. water distribution provisions are not respected. At the same time, the incoming runoff has a high degree of mineralization, because in the middle reaches, on the territory of Uzbekistan, large volumes of collector-drainage waters are discharged into the channel of the Syrdarya River. The modulation of the leaf energy budget components to maintain optimal leaf temperature are fundamental aspects of plant functioning and survival. Better understanding these aspects becomes increasingly important under a drying and warming climate when cooling through evapotranspiration (E) is suppressed. Combining novel measurements and theoretical estimates, we obtained unusually comprehensive twig‐scale leaf energy budgets under extreme field conditions in droughted (suppressed E) and non‐droughted (enhanced E) plots of a semi‐arid pine forest. Under the same high mid‐summer radiative load, leaf cooling shifted from relying on nearly equal contributions of sensible (H) and latent (LE) energy fluxes in non‐droughted trees to relying almost exclusively on H in droughted ones, with no change in leaf temperature. Relying on our detailed leaf energy budget, we could demonstrate that this is due to a 2× reduction in leaf aerodynamic resistance. This capability for LE‐to‐H shift in leaves of mature Aleppo pine trees under droughted field conditions without increasing leaf temperature is likely a critical factor in the resilience and relatively high productivity of this important Mediterranean tree species under drying conditions. Summary statement: Relying on detailed leaf energy budgets in mature pines, we demonstrate that leaves greatly enhance their sensible heat flux to prevent overheating under drought, which must rely on changes in leaf aerodynamic resistance. Regulation of tissue water potential is a key mechanism in macroalgal osmotic responses to changing external osmotic conditions, which are common in tidally influenced estuarine and intertidal systems. Nevertheless, significant knowledge gaps exist in our understanding of osmotic responses in macroalgae because few methods measure osmotic potential within macroalgal tissues. Leaf psychrometers have furthered understanding of osmotic potentials in terrestrial plant water relations, yet these have not been developed to measure the range of highly negative potential values found in marine macroalgae. To address these gaps, we present an effective, updated version of the Chardakov method to measure tissue water potential in macroalgae. Here, we present a case study examining macroalgal response in tissue water potential by two morphologically and evolutionarily distinct species, Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta) and Hypnea musciformis (Rhodophyta) to four paired salinity and nutrient treatments at two temperatures. These treatments simulate a gradient from full coastal ocean conditions to brackish submarine groundwater discharge, an ecosystem type found on basaltic shorelines. Both algae demonstrated plasticity in osmotic response to submarine groundwater discharge with significant positive correlations between tissue water potential and proportion of submarine groundwater discharge in the treatment. These results are the first to describe macroalgal response in tissue water potential, a first step to understanding algal physiological ecology in such complex coastal environments. This revised Chardakov method is a valuable tool to better understand species-specific osmotic responses to ecologically relevant conditions, and can augment the study of other tidal systems and ontogenetic stages. In the last 20 years, a significant mortality of Fagus sylvatica L. (European beech) has been documented in central and northern European forests. Surprisingly, no beech die off occurred at the southern limit. This fact leads us to hypothesize that European beech populations growing at the southern limit of the distribution might have a significant phenotypic plasticity to better cope with low water availability and rising temperatures. To check this hypothesis, we evaluated the ecophysiological behavior of F. sylvatica growing along an altitudinal transect in Calabria (Italy). We selected three study sites (750 m a.s.l., 976 m a.sl. m a.s.l., 1450 m a.s.l.) showing narrow ranges of temperature, rainfall and air humidity. Trees growing at 976 m a.s.l. showed the highest stomatal conductance values during the entire experimental period. The lowest gas exchange and highest leaf mass area were recorded in plants growing at 750 m a.s.l. In the European beech growing at 1450 m a.s.l., higher vessel density, lower mean vessel diameter and higher vessel grouping index values were recorded. Overall, our results highlighted that the measured populations show a considerable phenotypic plasticity leading them to adjust anatomical and physiological traits in response to narrow ranges of environmental parameters. Despite that, the distribution of F. sylvatica seems to be limited to areas with a growing season rainfall of at least 400 mm and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) values < 3 kPa, which may represent the main environmental thresholds which strongly limit the beech growth and, therefore, influence the ability of this species to cope with future environmental conditions.
