1. Invariant Extended Kalman Filtering for Pedestrian Deep-Inertial Odometry

Abstract

Indoor localization for pedestrians, which relies solely on inertial odometry, has been a topic of great interest. Its significance lies in its ability to provide positioning solutions independently, without the need for external data. Although traditional strap-down inertial navigation shows rapid drift, the introduction of pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR), and artificial intelligence (AI) has enhanced the applicability of inertial odometry for indoor localization. However, inertial odometry continues to be affected by drift, inherent to the nature of dead reckoning. This implies that even a slight error at a given moment can lead to a significant decrease in accuracy after continuous integration operations. In this paper, we propose a novel approach aimed at enhancing the positioning accuracy of inertial odometry. Firstly, we derive a learning-based forward speed using inertial measurements from a smartphone. Unlike mainstream methods where the learned speed is directly used to determine the position, we use the forward speed combined with non-holonomic constraint (NHC) as a measurement to update the state predicted within a strap-down inertial navigation framework. Secondly, we employ an invariant extended Kalman filter (IEKF)-based state estimation to facilitate fusion to cope with the nonlinearity arising from the system and measurement model. Experimental tests are carried out in different scenarios using an iPhone 12, and traditional methods, including PDR, robust neural inertial navigation (RONIN), and the EKF-based method, are compared. The results suggest that the method we propose surpasses these traditional methods in performance.

Abstract

Precise and robust localization is critical for many navigation tasks, especially autonomous driving systems. The most popular localization approach is global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). However, it has several shortcomings such as multipath and nonline- of-sight reception. Vision-based localization is one of the approaches without using GNSS which is based on vision. This paper used visual localization with a prior 3D LiDAR map. Compared to common methods for visual localization using camera-acquired maps, this paper used the method that tracks the image feature and poses of a monocular camera to match with prior 3D LiDAR maps. This paper reconstructs the image feature to several sets of 3D points by a local bundle adjustment-based visual odometry system. Those 3D points matched with the prior 3D point cloud map to track the globe pose of the user. The visual localization approach has several advantages. (1) Since it only relies on matching geometry, it is robust to changes in ambient luminosity appearance. (2) Also, it uses the prior 3D map to provide viewpoint invariance. Moreover, the proposed method only requires users to use low-cost and lightweight camera sensors.

Abstract

This paper discusses ubiquitous smartphone pedestrian positioning challenges in urban canyons and GNSS-denied areas such as indoor spaces. Existing sensor-based techniques, including GNSS, INS, and VIO, have limitations that affect positioning accuracy and reliability. A machine learning-based approach is suggested to employ Support Vector Machine (SVM) to classify indoor/outdoor (IO) detection using GNSS measurement data. The proposed system integrates local estimates on VIO and 3D mapping aided (3DMA) GNSS measurements using Factor Graph Optimization (FGO) with an IO detection switch to estimate precise pose and eliminate global drift. The effectiveness of the system is evaluated through real-world experiments that produce notable outcomes.

Abstract

We first use the multi-robot SLAM framework DiSCo-SLAM to evaluate the performance of cooperative SLAM based on the complicated dataset in urban scenes. Besides, we perform comparisons of single-robot SLAM and multi-robot SLAM to explore whether the cooperative framework can noticeably improve robot localization performance and the influence of inter-robot constraints in local pose graph, utilizing an identical dataset generated via the Carla simulator. Our findings indicate that under specific conditions, the integration of inter-robot constraints may effectively mitigate drift in local pose estimation. The extent to which inter-robot constraints affect the correction of local SLAM is related to various factors, such as the confidence level of the constraints and the range of keyframes imposed by the constraint.

Abstract

Global sustainable agricultural systems are under threat, due to increasing and co-occurring drought and salinity stresses. Combined effects of these stresses on agricultural crops have traditionally been evaluated in small-scale experimental studies. Consequently, large-scale studies need to be performed to increase our understanding and assessment of the combined impacts in agricultural practice in real-life scenarios. This study aims to provide a new monitoring approach using remote-sensing observations to evaluate the joint impacts of drought and salinity on crop traits. In our tests over the Netherlands at large spatial scale (138.74 km2), we calculated five functional traits for both maize and potato from Sentinel-2 observations, namely leaf area index (LAI), the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), the fraction of vegetation cover (FVC), leaf chlorophyll content (Cab), and leaf water content (Cw). Individual and combined effects of the stresses on the seasonal dynamics in crop traits were determined using both one-way and two-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs). We found that both stresses (individual and co-occurring) affected the functional traits of both crops significantly (with R2 ranging from 0.326 to 0.796) though with stronger sensitivities to drought than to salinity. While we found exacerbating effects within co-occurrent stresses, the impact level depended strongly on the moment in the growing season. For both crops, LAI, FAPAR, and FVC dropped the most under severe drought stress conditions. The patterns for Cab and Cw were more inhibited by co-occurring drought and salinity. Consequently, our study constitutes a way towards evaluating drought and salinity impacts in agriculture, with the possibility of potential large-scale application for sustainable food security.

6. First-order phase transition and unexpected rigid rotation mode in hybrid improper ferroelectric (La, Al) co-substituted Ca3Ti2O7 ceramics

Ca3Ti2O7 with Ruddlesden-Popper structure exhibits the largest polarization among the known hybrid improper ferroelectrics. However, the high Curie temperature impedes the thorough study of phase transition through dielectric characterization. According to the previous theoretical design rule, the Curie temperature can be suppressed by increasing the tolerance factor. So, in the present work, high-quality Ca3-xLaxTi2-xAlxO7 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) ceramics with increased tolerance factors were successfully prepared. The amplitude of oxygen octahedral tilt mode indeed decreases with increasing tolerance factors, leading to a degeneration of ferroelectric polarization. However, the unexpected rigid rotation mode causes the composition-invariable coercive fields. The Curie temperatures decrease linearly with increasing x and tolerance factors. The variable-temperature dielectric constant confirms first-order improper ferroelectric transitions in Ca3Ti2O7-based ceramics. The results of variable temperature X-ray diffraction reveal the coexistence of two-phases below Curie temperature. The present work confidently confirms the first-order improper ferroelectric transition in Ca3Ti2O7-based ceramics by combining results of variable-temperature dielectric response and in-situ X-ray powder diffraction. 7. Evaluating the '2+26' regional strategy for air quality improvement during two air pollution alerts in Beijing: variations in PM2.5 concentrations, source apportionment, and the relative contribution of local emission and regional transport

Abstract

To comprehensively evaluate the effects of the recent “2+26” regional strategy for air quality improvement, we compared the variations in PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing during four pollution episodes with different emission-reduction strategies. The 2+26 strategy implemented in March 2018 led to a mean PM2.5 concentration 16.43 % lower than that during the pollution episode in March 2013, when no specific emission-reduction measures were in place. The same 2+26 strategy implemented in November 2017 led to a mean PM2.5 concentration 32.70 % lower than that during the pollution episode in November 2016, when local emission-reduction measures were implemented. The results suggested that the effects of the 2+26 regional emission-reduction measures on PM2.5 reductions were influenced by a diversity of factors and could differ significantly during specific pollution episodes. Furthermore, we found the proportions of sulfate ions decreased significantly, and nitrate ions were the dominant PM2.5 components during the two 2+26 orange alert periods. Meanwhile, the relative contribution of coal combustion to PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing during the pollution episodes in March 2013, November 2016, November 2017 and March 2018 was 40 %, 34 %, 28 % and 11 %, respectively, indicating that the recent “Coal to Gas” project and the contingent 2+26 strategy led to a dramatic decrease in coal combustion in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region. On the other hand, the relative contribution of vehicle exhaust during the 2+26 orange alert periods in November 2017 and March 2018 reached 40 % and 54 %, respectively. The relative contribution of local emissions to PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing also varied significantly and ranged from 49.46 % to 89.35 % during the four pollution episodes. These results suggested that the 2+26 regional emission-reduction strategy should be implemented with red air pollution alerts during heavy pollution episodes to intentionally reduce the dominant contribution of vehicle exhausts to PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing, while specific emission-reduction measures should be implemented accordingly for different cities within the 2+26 framework.

Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is marked by cognitive dysfunction emerging from neuropathological processes impacting brain function. AD affects brain dynamics at the local level, such as changes in the balance of inhibitory and excitatory neuronal populations, as well as long-range changes to the global network. Individual differences in these changes as they relate to behaviour are poorly understood. Here, we use a multi-scale neurophysiological model, “The Virtual Brain (TVB)”, based on empirical multi-modal neuroimaging data, to study how local and global dynamics correlate with individual differences in cognition. In particular, we modeled individual resting-state functional activity of 124 individuals across the behavioural spectrum from healthy aging, to amnesic Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), to AD. The model parameters required to accurately simulate empirical functional brain imaging data correlated significantly with cognition, and exceeded the predictive capacity of empirical connectomes.

Abstract

Various sensors from airborne and satellite platforms are producing large volumes of remote sensing images for mapping, environmental monitoring, disaster management, military intelligence, and others. However, it is challenging to efficiently storage, query and process such big data due to the data- and computing- intensive issues. In this paper, a Hadoop-based framework is proposed to manage and process the big remote sensing data in a distributed and parallel manner. Especially, remote sensing data can be directly fetched from other data platforms into the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). The Orfeo toolbox, a ready-to-use tool for large image processing, is integrated into MapReduce to provide affluent image processing operations. With the integration of HDFS, Orfeo toolbox and MapReduce, these remote sensing images can be directly processed in parallel in a scalable computing environment. The experiment results show that the proposed framework can efficiently manage and process such big remote sensing data.

Abstract

The different magnetic behaviors of LaCoO$_3$ films grown on LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ are related to the Co-O-Co bond angles and the constraints imposed on the Co-O bond lengths by the substrate geometries. Long-range magnetic order occurs below T ~ 90 K when the Co-O-Co bond angle is greater than 163 degrees, consistent with the behavior of bulk and nanoparticles forms of LaCoO$_3$. A LaAlO$_3$ substrate prevents magnetic long-range order at low temperatures near the film-substrate interface and collinear antiferromagnetic sublattices away from the interface. At low temperatures, the antiferromagnetically ordered sublattices are non-collinear in films grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates, leading to a significant net moment., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, 6 supplementary figures

Abstract

To measure the extended-range neutron spectra and calibrate the extended-range neutron dosemeters of the China initiative Accelerator-Driven System (CiADS), an Extended-range Bonner Sphere Spectrometer (EBSS) has been developed. The EBSS was designed based on the PHITS codes, investigating various combinations of materials and diameters of the neutron moderators and the neutron multipliers for extended-range neutrons. Finally, seven polyethylene-only spheres and seven extended-range spheres were selected and subsequently built. The neutron multipliers of the extended-range spheres embedded concentric shells of lead, copper and tungsten. The response functions of the EBSS were analyzed and experimentally validated. It was subsequently tested with 252Cf neutron source and cosmic ray neutron source. The results demonstrate that the EBSS is capable of accurately measuring neutron spectra.

15. Hippocampal cingulum white matter increases over time in young people at high genetic risk for bipolar disorder

Abstract

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a strongly familial psychiatric disorder associated with white matter (WM) brain abnormalities. It is unclear whether such abnormalities are present in relatives without BD, and little is known about WM trajectories in those at increased genetic risk.Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) data were acquired at baseline and after two years in 91 unaffected individuals with a first-degree relative with bipolar disorder (HR), and 85 individuals with no family history of mental illness (CON). All participants were aged between 12 and 30 years at baseline. We examined longitudinal change in Fractional Anisotropy (FA) using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS).Compared to the CON group, HR participants showed a significant increase in FA in the right cingulum (hippocampus) (CGH) over a two-year period (p .05, FDR corrected). This effect was more pronounced in HR individuals without a lifetime diagnosis of a mood disorder than those with a mood disorder.While our study is well powered to achieve the primary objectives, our sub-group analyses were under powered.In one of the very few longitudinal neuroimaging studies of young people at high risk for BD, this study reports novel evidence of atypical white matter development in HR individuals in a key cortico-limbic tract involved in emotion regulation. Our findings also suggest that this different white matter developmental trajectory may be stronger in HR individuals without affective psychopathology. As such, increases in FA in the right CGH of HR participants may be a biomarker of resilience to mood disorders.

Abstract

The dynamics of a nuclear open quantum system could be revealed in the correlations between the breakup fragments of halo nuclei. The breakup mechanism of a proton halo nuclear system is of particular interest as the Coulomb polarization may play an important role, which, however, remains an open question. Here we use a highly efficient silicon detector array and measure the correlations between the breakup fragments of 8B incident on 120Sn at near-barrier energies. The energy and angular correlations can be explained by a fully quantum mechanical method based on the state-of-the-art continuum discretized coupled channel calculations. The results indicate that, compared to the neutron halo nucleus 6He, 8B presents distinctive reaction dynamics: the dominance of the elastic breakup. This breakup occurs mainly via the short-lived continuum states, almost exhausts the 7Be yield, indicating the effect of Coulomb polarization on the proton halo state. The correlation information reveals that the prompt breakup mechanism dominates, occurring predominantly on the outgoing trajectory. We also show that, as a large environment, the continuum of 8B breakup may not significantly influence elastic scattering and complete fusion.

Abstract

β decay of proton-rich nuclei plays an important role in exploring isospin mixing. The β decay of ^{26}P at the proton drip line is studied using double-sided silicon strip detectors operating in conjunction with high-purity germanium detectors. The T=2 isobaric analog state (IAS) at 13 055 keV and two new high-lying states at 13 380 and 11 912 keV in ^{26}Si are unambiguously identified through β-delayed two-proton emission (β2p). Angular correlations of two protons emitted from ^{26}Si excited states populated by ^{26}P β decay are measured, which suggests that the two protons are emitted mainly sequentially. We report the first observation of a strongly isospin-mixed doublet that deexcites mainly via two-proton decay. The isospin mixing matrix element between the ^{26}Si IAS and the nearby 13 380-keV state is determined to be 130(21) keV, and this result represents the strongest mixing, highest excitation energy, and largest level spacing of a doublet ever observed in β-decay experiments.

Abstract

Study question Could cell-free RNA (cfRNA) in culture medium be non-invasive strategy to select in vitro fertilized (IVF) embryos? Summary answer CfRNAs in culture medium could be potential markers correlated with embryo qualities. What is known already Infertility is a critical component of reproductive health and couples with infertility may choose assisted reproductive technology (ART) to increase their chances of conception. However, the effectiveness remains low. One way to improve the outcome is to screen the embryo prior to implantation. Noninvasive testing opens new perspectives in analyzing embryo qualities and current pending includes microscopy images coupled with artificial intelligence and omics analysis of the spent blastocyst medium (SBM). Cell-free DNA in SBM could be used to identify the embryo ploidy and metabolomic/proteomic markers could be correlated with embryo potential, while the research of cfRNA is lacking. Study design, size, duration We developed a new library method of polyadenylation ligation-mediated sequencing (PALM-Seq) to capture the low amount of cfRNA and collected twelve culture mediums of in vitro embryos on Day 3 and five samples of embryos on Day 5. Participants/materials, setting, methods We employed PALM-Seq on culture medium of embryos generated by IVF or Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Owing to the new method, we could comprehensively profile the cfRNAs, including miRNA, tRNA, piRNA, lncRNA and mRNA. The morphology and fragmentation of the recruited embryos were also recorded. Main results and the role of chance Generally, thousands of genes could be detected in all culture mediums and the number greatly increased in SBM. We identified several reported miRNA markers in our study, such as miR-21-5p and miR-92a-3p, while highly expressed miRNAs varied across samples and stages. We indeed found piRNA in mediums and several specific piRNAs had large amount of expression. In contrast, detected number and expression of tRNA were stable across samples. Besides of reported mRNA markers, we could profile the expression of all detected mRNAs and no differences were found between embryos with and without fragmentation. We found that the majority of mRNA fragments were shorter than 30 nucleotides. In addition, some granular-specific expressed mRNAs could be detected in medium on Day 3 and they decreased of medium on Day 5. Limitations, reasons for caution We have only conducted preliminary exploration in the culture medium of pre-implantation embryos and studies of larger sample size are needed. Wider implications of the findings Our research proved the feasibility of performing high-throughput sequencing of cfRNAs in SBM. It opens new perspectives on defining non-invasive markers and selection of embryos with the most potential. Our results also contribute a new insight on improving the treatment of infertility. With the continuous development of imaging technology, high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to quantitatively analyze the morphological and functional status of orbital soft tissue. Changes in the morphology and function of the extraocular muscles and pulleys may be the mechanical basis of some incomitant and special patterns of strabismus. Abstract

With their high mobility, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) become appealing data collectors in hard-to-reach wide-area distributed sensor networks. Different from existing works focusing on the perspective of UAVs for service order optimization and UAV utility maximization, we consider the utilities of both sensors and UAVs, and innovatively model the competition among sensors (buyers) for the service of UAVs (sellers) as an auction game. A “unity makes strength” strategy is exploited. That is, to strengthen the bidding competitiveness, a group-buying coalition auction method that encourages sensors to form coalitions to bid for UAV service is proposed. Besides, we propose a parallel variable neighborhood ascent search algorithm, we can quickly determine the approximately optimal group-buying coalition structure. Numerical results show that the proposed method outperforms the joint trajectory design-task scheduling (TDTS) UAV-to-community method and the single coalition formation game (CFG) method.

Abstract

Cobalt-based hydroxide are ideal candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, we use molybdenum oxide nanorods as sacrificial templates to construct a self-supporting molybdenum-doped cobalt hydroxide nanosheet hierarchical microtubule structure based on a structural engineering strategy to improve the active area of the catalyst. X-ray-based spectroscopic tests revealed that Mo (VI) with tetrahedral coordination intercalated into the interlayer of cobalt hydroxide, promoting interlayer separation. At the same time, Mo is connected with Co through oxygen bonds, which promotes the transfer of Co charges to Mo and reduces the electron cloud density of Co ions. In 1 M KOH, optimized molybdenum-doped cobalt hydroxide nanosheet microtubules only needs an overpotential of 288 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm⁻², which is significantly better than that of pure Co(OH)₂ nanosheets and RuO2. Structural engineering and electronic state regulation can effectively improve the oxygen evolution activity of cobalt-based hydroxide, which provides a design idea for the development of efficient oxygen evolution catalysts.

25. Coalitional formation-based group-buying for UAV-enabled data collection:an auction game approach

Abstract

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enable promising solutions in assisting data collection in wide-area distributed sensor networks, leveraging their advanced properties of high mobility and line-of-sight communication links. However, existing UAV-assisted data collection methods mainly focus on unilaterally maximizing the utility of UAVs or sensors. Unfortunately, the problem driven by the market economy is ignored, namely the game between buyer and seller, in the process of sensors competing for UAV services. To address this problem, we propose a group-buying coalition auction method that encourages sensors to form coalitions to bid for UAV data collection services. Then, a parallel variable neighborhood ascent search algorithm is designed to quickly search the approximately optimal group-buying coalition structure. We further propose a novel group-buying coalition auction method, named TRUST, which can ensure the economical properties, i.e., truthfulness, individual rationality, and maximization of social welfare. Numerical results show that the sensors’ average age of information (AoI) under the proposed method is reduced by 16.7% and 44.5% compared with the coalition formation game (CFG) and joint trajectory design-task scheduling (TDTS) UAV-to-community methods. To our best knowledge, this is the first effort on truthful coalition formation-based group-buying auction.

27. Large household reduces dementia mortality: A cross-sectional data analysis of 183 populations

Abstract

Background: Large households/families may create more happiness and offer more comprehensive healthcare among the members. We correlated household size to dementia mortality rate at population level for analysing its protecting role against dementia mortality. Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study. Dementia specific mortality rates of the 183 member states of World Health Organization were calculated and matched with the respective country data on household size, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), urban population and ageing. Scatter plots were produced to explore and visualize the correlations between household size and dementia mortality rates. Pearson's and nonparametric correlations were used to evaluate the strength and direction of the associations between household size and all other variables. Partial correlation of Pearson's approach was used to identify that household size protects against dementia regardless of the competing effects from ageing, GDP and urbanization. Multiple regression was used to identify significant predictors of dementia mortality. Results: Household size was in a negative and moderately strong correlation (r = -0.6034, p < 0.001) with dementia mortality. This relationship was confirmed in both Pearson r (r = - 0.524, p<0.001) and nonparametric (rho = -0.579, p < 0.001) analyses. When we controlled for the contribution of ageing, socio-economic status and urban lifestyle in partial correlation analysis, large household was still in inverse and significant correlation to dementia mortality (r = -0.331, p <0.001). This suggested that, statistically, large household protect against dementia mortality regardless of the contributing effects of ageing, socio-economic status and urban lifestyle. Stepwise multiple regression analysis selected large household as the variable having the greatest contribution to dementia mortality with R2 = 0.263 while ageing was placed second increasing R2 to 0.259. Abstract

Ca3Ti2O7 with Ruddlesden-Popper structure exhibits the largest polarization among the known hybrid improper ferroelectrics. However, the high Curie temperature impedes the thorough study of phase transition through dielectric characterization. According to the previous theoretical design rule, the Curie temperature can be suppressed by increasing the tolerance factor. So, in the present work, high-quality Ca3-xLaxTi2-xAlxO7 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) ceramics with increased tolerance factors were successfully prepared. The amplitude of oxygen octahedral tilt mode indeed decreases with increasing tolerance factors, leading to a degeneration of ferroelectric polarization. However, the unexpected rigid rotation mode causes the composition-invariable coercive fields. The Curie temperatures decrease linearly with increasing x and tolerance factors. The variable-temperature dielectric constant confirms first-order improper ferroelectric transitions in Ca3Ti2O7-based ceramics. The results of variable temperature X-ray diffraction reveal the coexistence of two-phases below Curie temperature. The present work confidently confirms the first-order improper ferroelectric transition in Ca3Ti2O7-based ceramics by combining results of variable-temperature dielectric response and in-situ X-ray powder diffraction. Abstract

We report a measurement of the observed cross sections of e + e - → J / ψ X based on 3.21 fb - 1 of data accumulated at energies from 3.645 to 3.891 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider. In analysis of the cross sections, we measured the decay branching fractions of B ( ψ ( 3686 ) → J / ψ X ) = ( 64.4 ± 0.6 ± 1.6 ) % and B ( ψ ( 3770 ) → J / ψ X ) = ( 0.5 ± 0.2 ± 0.1 ) % for the first time. The energy-dependent line shape of these cross sections cannot be well described by two Breit-Wigner (BW) amplitudes of the expected decays ψ ( 3686 ) → J / ψ X and ψ ( 3770 ) → J / ψ X . Instead, it can be better described with one more BW amplitude of the decay R ( 3760 ) → J / ψ X . Under this assumption, we extracted the R ( 3760 ) mass M R ( 3760 ) = 3766.2 ± 3.8 ± 0.4 MeV / c 2 , total width Γ R ( 3760 ) tot = 22.2 ± 5.9 ± 1.4 MeV , and product of leptonic width and decay branching fraction Γ R ( 3760 ) e e B [ R ( 3760 ) → J / ψ X ] = ( 79.4 ± 85.5 ± 11.7 ) eV . The significance of the R ( 3760 ) is 5.3 σ . The first uncertainties of these measured quantities are from fits to the cross sections and second systematic.

Abstract

Study question Is there a difference in fertility outcomes between individualized or standard FSH dosing in women scheduled for IVF with an expected poor response? Summary answer In predicted poor responders (AFC What is known already Poor responders usually lead to many detrimental effects on IVF outcomes due to low oocyte number and quality which in turn result in low pregnancy outcomes and an increased chance of cycle cancellation. Clinicians often individualize the FSH dose using ovarian reserve tests (ORT), including antral follicle count (AFC), basal FSH (bFSH), and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH). However, it is unclear whether individualized FSH dosing improves clinical outcomes. Abstract

The beta-delayed two-proton (beta 2p) decay of S-27 was studied using a state-of-the-art silicon array and Clover-type HPGe detectors. An energy peak at 6372(15) keV with a branching ratio of 2.4(5)% in the decay-energy spectrum was identified as a two-proton transition via the isobaric-analog state in P-27 to the ground state of Al-25 in the beta decay of S-27. Two-proton angular correlations were measured by the silicon array to study the mechanism of two-proton emission. Based on experimental results and Monte Carlo simulations, it was found that the main mechanism for the emission of beta 2p by S-27 is of sequential nature.

Abstract

Removal of arsenate, As(V) from water was achieved using zinc oxide nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were synthesised from zinc acetate dihydrate and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) using the wet chemical sol-gel method. Different synthesis parameters were explored; including different ratios of Zn:NaOH and calcination temperatures. The synthesised samples were subsequently characterised and tested to investigate the adsorption capabilities of ZnO towards As(V). The colourimetric approach was utilised to analyse the samples’ performance. The particles had a relatively large average size as tested by the nanoparticle size analyser and the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) characterisation of the samples confirmed the formation of ZnO. The peaks were narrow with high intensity, which indicates a larger crystal size and stable crystallinity. The samples showed a linear trend of increased adsorption capacity with the contact time. However, as indicated by the XRD and nanoparticle size analyser results, the particles had agglomerated and this has caused the total surface area to shrink. In summary, ZnO nanoparticles were successfully synthesised and were successful in adsorbing As(V) with different percentages for each sample. The adsorption trend was clear with respect to the changing parameters.

Abstract

A miniature two-material test specimen has been developed for material property characterization. Elastic-plastic and creep damage models have been applied for a semi-analytical model and a finite element (FE) model to simulate the miniature specimen tensile and creep tests on a two-material system. An inverse optimization algorithm has been developed, which can be used to extract the creep properties of the unknown material in the two-material system. Single material miniature specimen tensile tests have been performed for an aluminum alloy at room temperature and 400°C and full stage creep tests have been performed for a P91 steel at 650°C. All the tensile and creep test specimens are brought to fracture failure. The experimental results have been compared to the results from the corresponding results from conventional uniaxial tensile and creep tests on the same materials and under the same test conditions. This miniature specimen testing technique and the developed inverse method have the potential to become a new approach for determining the elastic-plastic and the full-stage creep properties until rupture for a two-material system at high temperature, e.g. a coating-substrate system.

Abstract

Using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, we search for the process $e^+e^-\rightarrow \eta_c\eta \pi^+\pi^-$. The search is performed using five large data sets recorded at center-of-mass energies of 4.23, 4.26, 4.36, 4.42, and 4.60 GeV. The $\eta_c$ meson is reconstructed in 16 exclusive decay modes. No signal is observed in the $\eta_c$ mass region at any center-of-mass energy. The upper limits on the reaction cross sections are determined to be 6.2, 10.8, 27.6, 22.6 and 23.7 pb at the 90% confidence level at the center-of-mass energies listed above.

47. Effective oil–water mixture separation and photocatalytic dye decontamination through nickel-dimethylglyoxime microtubes coated superhydrophobic and superoleophilic films

Abstract

Oils and solvable organic pollutants in wastewater demand separations of the components along with efficient photocatalysis in water treatment. Herein, we report on a practical purification strategy by using the multifunctional nickel-dimethylglyoxime [Ni(DMG)₂] microtubes to separate the liquid mixture and degrade organic pollutants. The self-assembled [Ni(DMG)₂] tubes was synthesized by a facile co-precipitation method. The static contact angle of the film prepared by mixing [Ni(DMG)₂] powder (1 : 2 wt%) into polydimethylsilicone (PDMS) to water can reach 161.3°, which can still remain superhydrophobic but oil-friendly under corrosion conditions. PDMS imparts good mechanical properties and serves as both the adhesive and hydrophobic material. PFOTS methanol solution contains a large number of low surface energy groups, which can reduce the surface free energy of [Ni(DMG)₂] rough structure. The superhydrophobic rough surface prepared by hollow micron tubular [Ni(DMG)₂] samples must have both low surface energy substance and hollow micron tubular morphology. Due to the unique wettability, oil and water were efficiently separated from the oil–water mixture through the films. The coated film itself is photocatalytic in degrading quinoline blue, rhodamine B, methyl orange and methylene blue. By using the film’s multifunctionality, a practical wastewater treatment was realized via water–oil separation, followed by fast photocatalytic degradation of solvable dyes.

48. Price trends of reimbursed oncological drugs in Switzerland in 2005–2019: A descriptive analysis

Abstract

Increasing oncological treatment costs are a major global concern with the risk of entailing two-tiered health care. Among cost determining factors is the price of individual drugs. In recognition of the central role of this factor, we present a comprehensive overview of the development of monthly prices of oncological drugs introduced over the last 15 years in Switzerland. We identified all oncological drugs newly reimbursed by mandatory health insurance in 2005–2019, and searched public repositories for their package prices, indications with approval dates, and treatment regimens for the calculation of (indication-specific) monthly prices. We found 81 products covering 77 different substances (39.5% protein kinase inhibitors, 21.0% monoclonal antibodies). Most indications related to the topography “blood”, followed by “lung and thorax” and “digestive tract”. From 2005–2009 to 2015–2019, the median monthly product price over all distinct indications of all products decreased by 7.56% (CHF 5,699 [interquartile range 4,483–7,321] to CHF 5,268 [4,19–6,967]), whereas it increased by 73.7% for monoclonal antibodies. In December 2019, six products had monthly prices over CHF 10,000, all approved for hematological or dermatological cancers. Our analysis suggests that individual price developments of oncological drugs are presently not the major driver of rising cancer treatment costs. However, rising launch prices of some new, mostly hematological drugs are of concern and require continued monitoring.
