The superconducting and structural properties of elemental strontium metal were investigated under pressures up to 60 GPa while maintaining cryogenic conditions during pressure application. Applying pressure at low temperatures reveals differences in superconducting and structural phases compared to previous reports obtained at room temperatures. Notably, the superconducting critical temperature exhibits a twofold increase under compression after cryogenic cooling within the pressure range of 35-42 GPa, compared to cryogenic cooling after room-temperature compression. Subsequently, the transition width becomes significantly sharper above 42 GPa. Low-temperature X-ray diffraction measurements under pressure reveal that this change corresponds to the Sr-III to Sr-IV transition, with no evidence of any metastable structure. Furthermore, the monoclinic Sr-IV structure was observed to remain stable to much higher pressures - at least up to 60 GPa, without the appearance of the incommensurate Sr-V phase present at room temperature. This implies that thermal activation energy plays an important role in overcoming the presence of a kinetic barrier to the Sr-V phase at room temperature., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. We report a series of high-pressure electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and x-ray diffraction measurements on single crystals of the weak topological insulator Bi2TeI and the topological metal Bi3TeI. Room temperature x-ray diffraction measurements show that both materials go through a series of pressure-induced structural transitions and eventually adopt a disordered bcc alloy structure at high pressure. A re-analysis of the published data on BiTeI indicates that this material also adopts a disordered bcc structure at high pressure, in contrast to the previously suggested P4/nmm structure. We find that Bi2TeI and Bi3TeI become superconducting at 13 GPa and 11.5 GPa, respectively. The superconducting critical temperature Tc of the bcc phase reaches maximum values of 7 K and 7.5 K for Bi2TeI and Bi3TeI, respectively and dTc/dP < 0 in both cases. The results indicate that disordered alloy bcc superconducting phases appear to be a universal feature of both the Bi-Te and Bi-Te-I systems at high pressure., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

With $T_c \sim 9.6~\mathrm{K}$, Be$_{22}$Re exhibits one of the highest critical temperatures among Be-rich compounds. We have carried out a series of high-pressure electrical resistivity measurements on this compound to 30 GPa. The data show that the critical temperature $T_c$ is suppressed gradually at a rate of $dT_c/dP = -0.05~\mathrm{K/GPa}$. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the electronic and phonon density of states (DOS) and the measured critical temperature, we estimate that the rapid increase in lattice stiffening in Be$_{22}$Re overwhelms a moderate increase in the electron-ion interaction with pressure, resulting in the decrease in $T_c$. High pressure x-ray diffraction measurements show that the ambient pressure crystal structure of Be$_{22}$Re persists to at least 154 GPa. The correlated electron material CePd$_2$P$_2$ crystallizes in the ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure and orders ferromagnetically at 29 K. Lai et al. [Phys. Rev. B 97, 224406 (2018)] found evidence for a ferromagnetic quantum critical point induced by chemical compression via substitution of Ni for Pd. However, disorder effects due to the chemical substitution interfere with a simple analysis of the possible critical behavior. In the present work, we examine the temperature - pressure - magnetic field phase diagram of single crystalline CePd$_2$P$_2$ to 25 GPa using a combination of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and x-ray diffraction measurements. We find that the ferromagnetism appears to be destroyed near 12 GPa, without any change in the crystal structure., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

ZrSiS has recently gained attention due to its unusual electronic properties: nearly perfect electron-hole compensation, large, anisotropic magneto-resistance, multiple Dirac nodes near the Fermi level, and an extremely large range of linear dispersion of up to 2 eV. We have carried out a series of high pressure electrical resistivity measurements on single crystals of ZrSiS. Shubnikov-de Haas measurements show two distinct oscillation frequencies. For the smaller orbit, we observe a change in the phase of 0.5, which occurs between 0.16 - 0.5 GPa. This change in phase is accompanied by an abrupt decrease of the cross-sectional area of this Fermi surface. We attribute this change in phase to a possible topological quantum phase transition. The phase of the larger orbit exhibits a Berry phase of pi and remains roughly constant up to 2.3 GPa. Optically detected magnetic resonance of nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond offers novel routes to both DC and AC magnetometry in diamond anvil cells under high pressures ($>3$ GPa). However, a serious challenge to realizing experiments has been the insertion of microwave radiation in to the sample space without screening by the gasket material. We utilize designer anvils with lithographically-deposited metallic microchannels on the diamond culet as a microwave antenna. We detected the spin resonance of an ensemble of microdiamonds under pressure, and measure the pressure dependence of the zero field splitting parameters. These experiments enable the possibility for all-optical magnetic resonance experiments on sub-$\mu$L sample volumes at high pressures., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Using a membrane-driven diamond anvil cell and both ac magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements, we have characterized the superconducting phase diagram of elemental barium to pressures as high as 65 GPa. We have determined the superconducting properties of the recently discovered Ba-VI crystal structure, which can only be accessed via the application of pressure at low temperature. We find that Ba-VI exhibits a maximum Tc near 8 K, which is substantially higher than the maximum Tc found when pressure is applied at room temperature., Comment: 6 pages, 1 table, 3 figures

At ambient pressure, BiTeI is the first material found to exhibit a giant Rashba splitting of the bulk electronic bands. At low pressures, BiTeI undergoes a transition from trivial insulator to topological insulator. At still higher pressures, two structural transitions are known to occur. We have carried out a series of electrical resistivity and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements on BiTeI at pressure up to ~40 GPa in an effort to characterize the properties of the high-pressure phases. A previous calculation found that the high-pressure orthorhombic P4/nmm structure BiTeI is a metal. We find that this structure is superconducting with Tc values as high as 6 K. AC magnetic susceptibility measurements support the bulk nature of the superconductivity. Using electronic structure and phonon calculations, we compute Tc and find that our data is consistent with phonon-mediated superconductivity., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) in topological semimetals is a recent discovery which attracts attention due to its robust appearance in a growing number of materials. To search for a relation between XMR and superconductivity, we study the effect of pressure on LaBi taking advantage of its simple structure and simple composition. By increasing pressure we observe the disappearance of XMR followed by the appearance of superconductivity at P=3.5 GPa.The suppression of XMR is correlated with increasing zero-field resistance instead of decreasing in-field resistance. At higher pressures, P=11 GPa, we find a structural transition from the face center cubic lattice to a primitive tetragonal lattice in agreement with theoretical predictions. Iridium-based 5d transition-metal oxides are attractive candidates for the study of correlated electronic states due to the interplay of enhanced crystal-field, Coulomb and spin-orbit interaction energies. At ambient pressure, these conditions promote a novel Jeff = 1/2 Mott insulating state, characterized by a gap of the order of ~0.1 eV. We present high-pressure electrical resistivity measurements of single crystals of Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7. While no indications of a pressure-induced metallic state up to 55 GPa were found in Sr2IrO4, a strong decrease of the gap energy and of the resistance of Sr3Ir2O7 between ambient pressure and 104 GPa confirm that this compound is in the proximity of a metal-insulator transition., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Simultaneous low-temperature electrical resistivity and Hall effect measurements were performed on single-crystalline Bi2Se3 under applied pressures up to 50 GPa. As a function of pressure, superconductivity is observed to onset above 11 GPa with a transition temperature Tc and upper critical field Hc2 that both increase with pressure up to 30 GPa, where they reach maximum values of 7 K and 4 T, respectively. Upon further pressure increase, Tc remains anomalously constant up to the highest achieved pressure. Conversely, the carrier concentration increases continuously with pressure, including a tenfold increase over the pressure range where Tc remains constant. Together with a quasi-linear temperature dependence of Hc2 that exceeds the orbital and Pauli limits, the anomalously stagnant pressure dependence of Tc points to an unconventional pressure-induced pairing state in Bi2Se3 that is unique among the superconducting topological insulators., Comment: 8 pages with Supplemental Material, to appear in Phys. Boron-doped single crystal diamond films were grown homoepitaxially on synthetic (100) Type Ib diamond substrates using microwave plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition. A modification in surface morphology of the film with increasing boron concentration in the plasma has been observed using atomic force microscopy. Use of nitrogen during boron doping has been found to improve the surface morphology and the growth rate of films but it lowers the electrical conductivity of the film. The Raman spectra indicated a zone center optical phonon mode along with a few additional bands at the lower wavenumber regions. The change in the peak profile of the zone center optical phonon mode and its downshift were observed with the increasing boron content in the film. Structural and electronic characterization of (Ca0.67Sr0.33)Fe2As2 has been performed as a func- tion of pressure up to 12 GPa using conventional and designer diamond anvil cells. The compound (Ca0.67Sr0.33)Fe2As2 behaves intermediate between its end members-CaFe2As2 and SrFe2As2- displaying a suppression of magnetism and the onset of superconductivity. Like other members of the AEFe2As2 family, (Ca0.67Sr0.33)Fe2As2 undergoes a pressure-induced isostructural volume collapse, which we associate with the development of As-As bonding across the mirror plane of the structure. This collapsed tetragonal phase abruptly cuts off the magnetic state, giving rise to superconductivity with a maximum Tc=22.2 K. The maximum Tc of the superconducting phase is not strongly correlated with any structural parameter, but its proximity to the abrupt suppression of magnetism as well as the volume collapse transition suggests that magnetic interactions and structural inhomogeneity may play a role in its development. The pressure-dependent evolution of the ordered states and crystal structures in (Ca,Sr)Fe2As2 provides an avenue to understand the generic behavior of the other members of the AEFe2As2 family., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We report x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, and magnetoresistance measurements on Bi2Se3 under high pressure and low temperature conditions. Pressure induces profound changes in both the room temperature value of the electrical resistivity as well as the temperature dependence of the resistivity. Initially, pressure drives Bi2Se3 towards increasingly insulating behavior and then, at higher pressures, the sample appears to enter a fully metallic state coincident with a change in the crystal structure. Within the low pressure phase, Bi2Se3 exhibits an unusual field dependence of the transverse magnetoresistance that is positive at low fields and becomes negative at higher fields. Our results demonstrate that pressures below 8 GPa provide a non-chemical means to controllably reduce the bulk conductivity of Bi2Se3.

Unlike the ferropnictide superconductors, which crystallize in a tetragonal crystal structure, binary FeAs forms in an orthorhombic crystal structure, where the local atomic environment resembles a highly distorted variant of the FeAs4 tetrahdedral building block of the ferropnictide superconductors. However, like the parent compounds of the ferropnictide superconductors, FeAs undergoes magnetic ordering at low temperatures, with no evidence favoring a superconducting ground state at ambient pressure. We employ pressure-dependent electrical transport and x-ray diffraction measurements using diamond anvil cells to characterize the magnetic state and the structure as a function of pressure. While the MnP-type structure of FeAs persists up to 25 GPa, compressing continuously with no evidence of structural transformations under pressure, features in the magnetotransport measurements associated with magnetism are not observed for pressures in excess of 11 GPa. Where observable, the features associated with magnetic order at ambient pressure show remarkably little pressure dependence, and transport measurements suggest that a dynamical structural instability coupled to the Fermi surface via a strong electron-phonon interaction may play an important role in enabling magnetism in FeAs., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We have performed several high-pressure resistivity experiments on the recently discovered superconductors La[O_{0.89}F_{0.11}]FeAs and Ce[O_{0.88}F_{0.12}]FeAs. At ambient pressure, these materials have superconducting onset temperatures T_c of 28 K and 44 K, respectively. While the T_c of La[O_{0.89}F_{0.11}]FeAs goes through a maximum between 10-68 kbar, in qualitative agreement with a recent report by Takahashi et al., the T_c of Ce[O_{0.88}F_{0.12}]FeAs decreases monotonically over the measured pressure range. At 265 kbar, the T_c of the cerium-based compound has been suppressed below 1.1 K., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physica C
