This work aims to study the evolution of the “Human and planet balance tool” as part of Prosperity Thinking. Prosperity Thinking is a sustainable design methodology that takes into account human and planet means. Through a literature review on sustainable design, we noticed that there is a lack of methods that take into account the problem definition stage. We developed a “Human and planet balance tool” which helps framing sustainable design challenges. Results show that designers, innovators, and changemakers have an interest in a methodology to analyze and address systemic challenges.

Introduction: Healthcare workers are particularly vulnerable to third-party workplace violence. The experience of work-related stress, by threatening the psychological balance of healthcare workers, making them less effective in man-aging the relationship with patients and their family members, may significantly contribute to third-party violence. Objective: To investigate whether stress-related psychosocial situations at work as defined by the widely known Demand-Control model, and the level of work-related social support, act as risk factors for third-party violence among healthcare workers. Specifically, we explored whether the risk of violence is higher in situations associated with higher levels of work-related stress (i.e., active or passive situations, and especially the high strain situation) when compared to a work situation related to lower levels of stress (i.e., low strain situation). We also explored whether the risk of violence is lower at higher levels of social support. Method: Cross-sectional study on 633 healthcare workers. Psychosocial work situations and third-party workplace violence have been operationalized by using well validated scales. Results: Logistic regressions including a number of relevant covariates (e.g., gender, job role, night shift work) revealed that, compared to a low strain situation, an active or passive situation had an increased risk for workplace violence. However, the highest risk was observed for a high strain situation (i.e., the situation associated with the highest level of work-related stress). High social support acted as a protective factor. Conclusion: Healthcare work-ers’ experience of stress at work may make them more vulnerable to third-party violence. Ensuring better psychosocial working conditions may contribute to the prevention of workplace violence and its consequences.

This study aimed to identify the regions and lesions most frequently reported in polytraumatized dogs and cats undergoing computed tomography. Research was carried out in the database of three Veterinary Referral Centers, to identify traumatized dogs and cats undergoing computed tomography from 2014 to 2017. Following were collected for each patient: gender, weight, type of study carried out and injuries reported. Lesions were classified according to the region involved: head, spine, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and appendicular skeleton. Thirty-seven studies involving cats and 26 involving dogs were included. Cats mainly presented lesions that involved both the skull and the chest simultaneously. Dogs presented lesions that affected the chest, abdomen and vertebral column simultaneously. This research proposes a set of design principles that designers and managers responsible for the design of organizational support services could adopt to improve employees' wellbeing. Through a qualitative study, based on semi-structured interviews, we carried out a cross-context analysis of wellbeing initiatives developed in three organizations. Adopting the perspective of science-based design, we drew seven design principles. We emphasize the importance of including these principles in the process of designing services oriented to employees' wellbeing in organizational contexts using the Design Thinking approach, as well as their application in broader contexts where services may play a crucial role., CERN IdeaSquare Journal of Experimental Innovation, Articles in press

How we communicate research is changing because of new (especially digital) possibilities. This article sets out 10 easy steps researchers can take to disseminate their work in novel and engaging ways, and hence increase the impact of their research on science and society. © 2020 Ross-Hellauer et al. The goal of the project is to develop a cohesive framework for the review–disseminate-assess phases of the research life cycle. As part of this work, the consortium needs to present the activities it will undertake to develop, exploit and sustain the achievements and results after the project ends. The study begins by analyzing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in Open Science, Open Access Publishing, Open Peer Review, Innovative Dissemination and Open Metrics. The analysis show that the drivers in Open Access Publishing are powerful enough to guarantee its future growth, there is no such movement for Open PeerReview, Innovative Dissemination and Open Metrics. The methodology of the study focuses on key results and findings from the survey, interviews, workshops, pilot projects focusing on Open Peer Review, Innovative Dissemination and Impact Data. A preliminary list of activities for development, exploitation and sustainability were drafted. Results that had no opportunity for exploitation and sustainability were identified and removed from the list. Outreach activities to science stakeholders and possibilities for ongoing collaboration were also confirmed. In parallel target groups, beneficiaries were confirmed, the consortium also confirmed the commitment to sustain the dissemination of results, exploit the findings for further development and develop key results into an actual solution.

An increasing number of universities offer user-centric innovation courses based on the principles of design thinking. Lecturers combine a plethora of design thinking elements in design thinking course syllabi and thereby adopt teaching styles that range from autonomy-supportive to structured. Using a balance between these two teaching styles seems most suitable to optimally engage students and provide guidance through the innovation process. To develop a syllabus for innovation courses, we draw on best practices currently being undertaken in universities worldwide and examine 11 design thinking syllabi from different departments (Engineering, Design, Business, and Information Systems). We identify 17 common and 18 unique elements of design thinking courses and related course materials. Based on our results, we propose a design thinking syllabus that includes suggestions for course objectives, course setup, assignment design, and team composition using a balance between autonomous-support and structural teaching styles.

Background: Among stem cell sources for regenerative therapy, human adipose derived stromal/stem cells (hASCs) have attracted a lot of attention over the last decade. hASCs are easily accessible, available in high numbers and their use does not pose ethical concerns. These cells can be obtained with minimal manipulation methods and have been used extensively in the autologous setting. However, the methods for tissue harvesting and grafting remain a crucial issue. This study aims at evaluating the biological features of hASCs obtained with nanofat, a novel liposuction technique, and at comparing them with hASCs obtained with the classical Coleman technique of adipose tissue harvesting. Materials and Methods: The nanofat methodology is a procedure alternative to the classical Coleman technique of fat harvesting and is characterized by the use of a thinner cannula. We analyzed hASCs derived from lipoaspirate samples collected using these two techniques. We assessed the immunophenotype, the rate of cell proliferation, adipogenic, osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation potential and immunomodulatory properties of nanofat- and Coleman-processed hASCs. Results: Both liposuction procedures enabled isolation and expansion of hASCs with high efficiency. The immunophenotypic characterization showed an antigen profile similar to the pattern expressed by mesenchymal stem cells. hASCs obtained with the two methods displayed multilineage differentiation potential into the adipogenic, osteogenic and chondrogenic commitments. Finally, both nanofat- and Coleman-derived hASCs displayed immunomodulatory properties, as evidenced by their tolerogenic phenotype and their ability to inhibit lymphocyte proliferation in vitro. Conclusions: These results indicate that the stem cell component in the stromal vascular fraction is preserved in lipoaspirates obtained with the nanofat technique.

La figura dell’insegnante è attraversata da profonde trasformazioni che ne mettono in discussione il ruolo sociale, professionale ed educativo. I fattori che sollecitano il corpo docente a ripensare al proprio ruolo e alle proprie funzioni sono molteplici: dal ricambio generazionale ai nuovi percorsi di reclutamento, dal delinearsi di un nuovo assetto istituzionale-organizzativo della scuola alla rapida evoluzione dei processi di insegnamento, dalla composizione più articolata della società italiana alla contrazione delle risorse disponibili. I saggi in questo volume sono il frutto dei lavori presentati, da esperti e studiosi di varie discipline dei settori dell’istruzione e dell’educazione, in occasione del convegno La professionalità dell’insegnante: valorizzare il passato, progettare il futuro promosso nel giugno 2013 dal dipartimento di Scienze dell’educazione dell’Università di Bologna, che ha voluto mettere al centro del dibattito nazionale la scuola e la figura del docente.

In occupational health interventions, there is a debate as to whether standardized or tailored measures should be used to identify which aspects of the psychosocial work environment should be targeted in order to improve employees’ well-being. Using the Job Demands-Resources model, the main aim of the present study is to demonstrate how a mixed methods approach to conducting screening enables the identification of potential context-dependent demands and resources in the workplace, which should to be targeted by the intervention. Specifically, we used a mixed methods exploratory sequential research design. First, we conducted four focus groups (N = 37) in a sample of employees working in grocery stores in Italy. The qualitative results allowed to identify one possible context-specific job demand: the use of a work scheduling IT software, whose implementation resulted in a high rotation between different market’s departments. From the qualitative results, this context-specific demand seemed to be related to workers’ well-being. Thus, in a subsequent questionnaire survey (N = 288), we included this demand together with generic measures of social support and psychological well-being. Results confirmed that this context-specific job demand was related to emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, it was found that social support moderated the relationship between this specific job demand and emotional exhaustion showing among employees whose activities depended on the IT software, employees that perceived higher levels of social support from colleagues experienced lower levels of emotional exhaustion with respect to their colleagues who perceived lower levels of social support. The present study confirms that mixed methods approach is useful in occupational health intervention research and offers a way forward on helping organizations prioritize their intervention activities.

Da alcuni anni si sta assistendo a un diffuso ripensamento delle scelte di localizzazione delle attività produttive, con un numero crescente di aziende che decidono di “rimpatriare” le produzioni precedentemente trasferite all’estero. Tale fenomeno è stato indicato con una varietà di termini, tra cui merita ricordare: “reshoring”, “back-shoring”, “backreshoring”, “in-shoring”, “on-shoring”, “reverse globalization”. A tale molteplicità di denominazioni, si è associata un’elevata varietà di definizioni, spesso uguali per termini diversi e diverse per termini uguali. In questo contributo, si preferisce utilizzare il più diffuso termine “reshoring”, identificandolo con la decisione di riportare nel Paese di origine dell’azienda attività produttive precedentemente delocalizzate in Paesi esteri, indipendentemente dal fatto che esse siano realizzate in regime di in-sourcing o out-sourcing. Tali attività produttive possono essere ricollocate in patria anche solo parzialmente, come nel caso in cui si mantiene la produzione delocalizzata per rifornire il mercato estero e quelli a esso limitrofi. Nel presente contributo si intendono approfondire le principali direttrici geografiche, in termini di Paesi in cui avviene il rientro e di Paesi “abbandonati”, nonché le principali motivazioni che spiegano questo tipo di decisioni.

Introduzione. Le competenze non tecniche (Non-Technical Skills) vengono definite come competenze cognitive, sociali e personali, complementari alle competenze tecniche che contribuiscono all’attivazione di performance lavorative sicure ed efficaci (Flin, O’Connor e Crichton, 2010). A tutt’oggi, nonostante sia stata dimostrata la rilevanza delle NTS nel campo della sicurezza, non esistono strumenti attendibili in italiano utili a misurare la presenza e i livelli di NTS in italiano. Obiettivo. Il presente studio ha quindi l’obiettivo di analizzare le proprietà psicometriche della scala per valutare le NTS per la sicurezza sul lavoro. Metodo. Sono stati condotti due studi strettamente interrelati. Lo Studio 1 ha valutato la validità di contenuto della scala mediante inter-rater agreement, mentre lo studio 2 ha indagato l’affidabilità dei fattori mediante una analisi fattoriale esplorativa (EFA) utilizzando la rotazione obliqua. I partecipanti dello Studio 1 erano 12 studenti di una magistrale di psicologia, mentre i partecipanti dello Studio 2 erano 133 operai di una azienda che produceva macchine agricole. Risultati. Nel primo studio sono stati definiti gli item della scala che è stata somministrata nello studio successivo. Lo studio 2 ha confermato la presenza di sei NTS: consapevolezza situazionale, decision-making, comunicazione, team work, leadership, capacità di gestire la fatica. Gli alpha di Cronbach si collocavano in un range da un minimo di .74 a un massimo di .90. Discussione. Questi risultati rappresentano uno dei primi progetti di validazione di una misura focalizzata sulle Non-Technical Skills per la sicurezza. Tale strumento è utile poiché può aiutare oltre la ricerca scientifica anche le organizzazioni interessate ad incrementare i livelli di sicurezza nella propri luoghi di lavoro.

This paper explores the recent back-reshoring and near-reshoring trends in global manufacturing, summarising and discussing empirical evidence emerging from a wide range of countries. Drawing on a data-base of secondary data, the paper contrasts the motivation for reshoring in US and Europe. Findings suggest that the reduction in labor and logistics cost differentials between offshore and home locations is one of the main reasons for relocating production both in Europe and US. Differences between the two areas emerge with respect to the importance assigned to the value creation effects.
