Abstract

X-ray binaries provide exceptional laboratories for understanding the physics of matter under the most extreme conditions. Until recently, there were few, if any, observational constraints on the circumbinary environments of X-ray binaries at $\sim$ 100-5000 AU scales; it remains unclear how the accretion onto the compact objects or the explosions giving rise to the compact objects interact with their immediate surroundings. Here, we present the first high-contrast adaptive optics images of X-ray binaries. These observations target all X-ray binaries within $\sim$ 3 kpc accessible with the Keck/NIRC2 vortex coronagraph. This paper focuses on one of the first key results from this campaign: our images reveal the presence of 21 sources potentially associated with the $\gamma$ Cassiopeiae analog high-mass X-ray binary RX J1744.7$-$2713. By conducting different analyses - a preliminary proper motion analysis, a color-magnitude diagram and a probability of chance alignment calculation - we found that three of these 21 sources have a high probability of being bound to the system. If confirmed, they would be in wide orbits ($\sim$ 450 AU to 2500 AU). While follow-up astrometric observations will be needed in $\sim$ 5-10 years to confirm further the bound nature of these detections, these discoveries emphasize that such observations may provide a major breakthrough in the field. Abstract

International audience; Background The identification of patients at high risk of a disabling disease course would be invaluable in guiding initial therapy in Crohn’s disease (CD). Our objective was to evaluate a combination of clinical, serological, and genetic factors to predict complicated disease course in pediatric-onset CD. Methods Data for pediatric-onset CD patients, diagnosed before 17 years of age between 1988 and 2004 and followed more than 5 years, were extracted from the population-based EPIMAD registry. The main outcome was defined by the occurrence of complicated behavior (stricturing or penetrating) and/or intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. Lasso logistic regression models were used to build a predictive model based on clinical data at diagnosis, serological data (ASCA, pANCA, anti-OmpC, anti-Cbir1, anti-Fla2, anti-Flax), and 369 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms. Results In total, 156 children with an inflammatory (B1) disease at diagnosis were included. Among them, 35% (n = 54) progressed to a complicated behavior or an intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. The best predictive model (PREDICT-EPIMAD) included the location at diagnosis, pANCA, and 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms. This model showed good discrimination and good calibration, with an area under the curve of 0.80 after correction for optimism bias (sensitivity, 79%, specificity, 74%, positive predictive value, 61%, negative predictive value, 87%). Decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical utility of the model. Conclusions A combination of clinical, serotypic, and genotypic variables can predict disease progression in this population-based pediatric-onset CD cohort. Independent validation is needed before it can be used in clinical practice.

Abstract

Although the relationship between age-related cognitive decline and saccadic eye movement (SEM) deficits has been outlined, specific cognitive alterations underlying age-related changes in saccadic performance remain unclear. This study attempted to better understand the nature of aging effects on SEMs. We compared SEMs in younger and older adults in prosaccade (PS) and antisaccade (AS) tasks under gap, step, and overlap conditions. We also examined relationships between these performances and several neuropsychological scores. Twenty-eight younger adults (YA), 24 older adults under 65 years (OA <65 ) and 24 over 65 years (OA >65 ) of age completed a neuropsychological evaluation, PS and AS tasks. Our results showed that latencies, AS cost, time to correct AS errors, and uncorrected AS, increased with aging. YA showed higher overlap effects than OA >65 and OA <65 . Importantly, correlations and regressions revealed close relationships not only between latencies and processing speed measures but also between the AS cost and the inhibition process measures. Correct saccades and the time to correct AS errors were closely related to the inhibition process and cognitive flexibility measures. These findings suggest that the progressive age-related decline of processing speed and executive attention are associated with, and can be highlighted though SEMs in PS and AS tasks.

Abstract

An association between multiple sclerosis (MS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been suggested. The purpose of this study was to compare the disease course of patients with both MS and IBD with that of patients with isolated MS or isolated IBD. Sixty-six MS-IBD patients were identified and were matched with 251 isolated MS and 257 isolated IBD controls. Main outcomes were scores using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) in MS and extent of disease extension in IBD at last clinical evaluation. After a median 12 years of disease duration, the median EDSS and the percentages of patients reaching an EDSS of 3.0 and 4.0 were significantly lower in MS-IBD patients than in controls. Abstract

Pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel diseases depends on the interaction between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors leading to a deregulated immune intestinal response resulting in bowel lesions. Epidemiologic variations of inflammatory bowel diseases with time (incidence, prevalence) and space suggest a role for risk environmental factors, but so far only smoking habits and appendectomy have been identified as influencing the risk of occurrence and the course of the diseases. Studies of monozygotic and dizygotic twins and the existence of familial aggregation are strong evidence for an important, but not exclusive, role for genetic susceptibility. Since the discovery of NOD2/CARD15 mutations, numerous genes have been associated with inflammatory bowel diseases, some of them involved in the regulation of innate immunity and cellular clearance of infectious agents (autophagy). Thus, new hypothesis include a key role of mucosal human microbiota which could be partly influenced by environmental factors generated by modern life. The improvement of life hygiene, the change of food composition and habits, the industrial pollution in developed countries, may influence, directly or by the way of modifying intestinal human microbiota, inflammatory bowel diseases risk occurrence.
