The presence of strong imaging artefacts in microtomographic X-ray data makes the CAD modelling process difficult to carry out. As an alternative to traditional image segmentation techniques, we propose to register the CAD models by deploying a realistic X-ray simulation on GPU in an optimisation framework. A user study was also conducted to compare the measurements made manually by a cohort of volunteers and those produced with our framework. Our implementation relies on open source software only. We numerically modelled the real experiment, taking into account geometrical properties as well as beam hardening, impulse response of the detector, phase contrast, and photon noise. Parameters of the overall model are then optimised so that X-ray projections of the registered the CAD models match the projections from an actual experiment. It appeared that manual measurements can be variable and subject to bias whereas our framework produced more reliable results. The features seen in the real CT image, including artefacts, were accurately replicated in the CT image reconstructed from the simulated data after registration: (i) linear attenuation coefficients are comparable for all the materials, (ii) geometrical properties are accurately recovered, and (iii) simulated images reproduce observed experimental artefacts. We showed that the choice of objective function is crucial to produce high fidelity results. We also demonstrated how to automatically produce CAD models as an optimisation problem, producing a high cross-correlation between the experimental CT slice and the simulated CT slice. These results pave the way towards the use of fast realistic simulation for accurate CAD modelling in tomographic X-ray data. The role of dopaminergic system in decision-making is well documented, and evidence suggests that it could play a significant role in response selection processes. The N-40 is a fronto-central event-related potential, generated by the supplementary motor areas (SMAs) and a physiological index of response selection processes. The aim of the present study was to determine whether infraclinical effects of dopamine depletion on response selection processes could be evidenced via alterations of the N-40. We obtained a dopamine depletion in healthy volunteers with the acute phenylalanine and tyrosine depletion (APTD) method which consists in decreasing the availability of dopamine precursors. Subjects realized a Simon task in the APTD condition and in the control condition. When the stimulus was presented on the same side as the required response, the stimulus-response association was congruent and when the stimulus was presented on the opposite side of the required response, the stimulus-response association was incongruent. The N-40 was smaller for congruent associations than for incongruent associations. Moreover, the N-40 was sensitive to the level of dopaminergic activity with a decrease in APTD condition compared to control condition. This modulation of the N-40 by dopaminergic level could not be explained by a global decrease of cerebral electrogenesis, since negativities and positivities indexing the recruitment of the primary motor cortex (anatomically adjacent to the SMA) were unaffected by APTD. The specific sensitivity of N-40 to ATPD supports the model of Keeler et al. (Neuroscience 282:156-175, 2014) according to which the dopaminergic system is involved in response selection. We present a framework that combines evolutionary optimisation, soft tissue modelling and ray tracing on GPU to simultaneously compute the respiratory motion and X-ray imaging in real-time. Our aim is to provide validated building blocks with high fidelity to closely match both the human physiology and the physics of X-rays. A CPU-based set of algorithms is presented to model organ behaviours during respiration. Soft tissue deformation is computed with an extension of the Chain Mail method. Rigid elements move according to kinematic laws. A GPU-based surface rendering method is proposed to compute the X-ray image using the Beer–Lambert law. It is provided as an open-source library. A quantitative validation study is provided to objectively assess the accuracy of both components: (i) the respiration against anatomical data, and (ii) the X-ray against the Beer–Lambert law and the results of Monte Carlo simulations. Our implementation can be used in various applications, such as interactive medical virtual environment to train percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography in interventional radiology, 2D/3D registration, computation of digitally reconstructed radiograph, simulation of 4D sinograms to test tomography reconstruction tools. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a very popular technique for investigating brain functions and/or mental processes. To this aim, EEG activities must be interpreted in terms of brain and/or mental processes. EEG signals being a direct manifestation of neuronal activity it is often assumed that such interpretations are quite obvious or, at least, straightforward. However, they often rely on (explicit or even implicit) assumptions regarding the structures supposed to generate the EEG activities of interest. For these assumptions to be used appropriately, reliable links between EEG activities and the underlying brain structures must be established. Because of volume conduction effects and the mixture of activities they induce, these links are difficult to establish with scalp potential recordings. We present different examples showing how the Laplacian transformation, acting as an efficient source separation method, allowed to establish more reliable links between EEG activities and brain generators and, ultimately, with mental operations. The nature of those links depends on the depth of inferences that can vary from weak to strong. Along this continuum, we show that 1) while the effects of experimental manipulation can appear widely distributed with scalp potentials, Laplacian transformation allows to reveal several generators contributing (in different manners) to these modulations, 2) amplitude variations within the same set of generators can generate spurious differences in scalp potential topographies, often interpreted as reflecting different source configurations. In such a case, Laplacian transformation provides much more similar topographies, evidencing the same generator(s) set, and 3) using the LRP as an index of response activation most often produces ambiguous results, Laplacian-transformed response-locked ERPs obtained over motor areas allow resolving these ambiguities. We present and analyze the behavior of an evolutionary algorithm designed to estimate the parameters of a complex organ behavior model. The model is adaptable to account for patient’s specificities. The aim is to finely tune the model to be accurately adapted to various real patient datasets. It can then be embedded, for example, in high fidelity simulations of the human physiology. We present here an application focused on respiration modeling. The algorithm is automatic and adaptive. A compound fitness function has been designed to take into account for various quantities that have to be minimized. The algorithm efficiency is experimentally analyzed on several real test cases: 1) three patient datasets have been acquired with the “breath hold” protocol, and 2) two datasets corresponds to 4-D CT scans. Its performance is compared with two traditional methods (downhill simplex and conjugate gradient descent): a random search and a basic real-valued genetic algorithm. In his seminal paper, Donders proposed that Choice reaction time (RT) tasks differ from Go/No-go RT tasks only by the insertion of a response decision operation. We evaluated this possibility by comparing the time course of Laplacian-transformed ERPs, recorded over the primary (M1s) and supplementary motor areas (SMAs) in a Choice and in a Go/No-go task. Laplacian-transformed ERPs showed that a component that develops over the SMAs during the RT of Choice tasks vanishes in our Go/No-go task. This indicates that a process, absent in the Go/No-go task, was 'inserted' in the Choice task. The Choice versus Go/No-go manipulation also modified the motor command: the activity recorded over M1s and the delay separating EMG onset from response completion depended on the nature of the task. This indicates that, although a process was inserted in the Choice task, it was not 'purely' inserted, contrary to Donders' initial assumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with two questions: what are the main characteristics of timing performance, and how do current timing models account for them? An outline of the most significant behavioural and neural indices of time processing is presented, with particular emphasis on the effects of activation and attention, and on data drawn from an important electrophysiological indice, the Contingent Negative Variation (CNV). A sample of influent timing models is then considered, ranged in two categories depending on whether they provide a representation of the time elapsing online between the limits of a target interval or a representation of the interval limits. The sufficiency of behavioral data supporting reasoning biases was challenged. Our objective was to test if physiological data could significantly support reasoning biases. Experiment 1: When performing a rule discovery task with feedback, participants sytematically gave the same response. This was not compatible with norms referring to a formal logic system, but was insufficient to conclude there was a reasoning bias. Only the knowledge of participants' expectations of feedback would merit this conclusion. Experiment 2: Participants' expectations were indexed by electrodermal activity. The results showed that when participants displayed the behavioral bias, they considered their responses to be correct and hence committed an error of logic. However, this error of logic did not prevent them from solving the task. This argues for a theory according to which human reasoning uses more economical strategies than the simple application of formal logical rules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The self-assembly of the rodlike two-dimensional chiral molecule 4-[trans-2-(pyrid-4-yl-vinyl)] benzoic acid on the Cu(100) surface has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Upon adsorption at T ≥ 300 K, the molecules are deprotonated and assemble in parquet patterns when the coverage remains below a critical value. Corresponding high-resolution data reveal that the ordering implies mesoscopic chiral resolution as a result of chiroselective interactions (i.e., two domains comprise exclusively one enantiomer). When the critical coverage is exceeded, an abrupt transition to a single racemic phase is observed with a different lateral molecular coupling scheme. The shifting of the subtle balance between the weak lateral coupling, substrate bonding, and the packing requirements encountered with the increased molecular coverage is suggested to be the driving force for this homochiral-to-heterochiral phase transition. Abstract: We present a simulator for guided needle puncture procedures. Our aim is to provide an effective training tool for students in interventional radiology (IR) using actual patient data and force feedback within an immersive virtual environment (VE). Training of the visual and motor skills required in IR is an apprenticeship which still consists of close supervision using the model: (i) see one, (ii) do one, and (iii) teach one. Training in patients not only has discomfort associated with it, but provides limited access to training scenarios, and makes it difficult to train in a time efficient manner. Currently, the majority of commercial products implementing a medical VE still focus on laparoscopy where eye–hand coordination and sensation are key issues. IR procedures, however, are far more reliant on the sense of touch. Needle guidance using ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) images is also widely used. Both of these are areas that have not been fully addressed by other medical VEs. This paper provides details of how we are developing an effective needle guidance simulator. Inhibition is a widely used notion proposed to account for data obtained in choice reaction time (RT) tasks. However, this concept is weakly supported by empirical facts. In this paper, we review a series of experiments using Hoffman reflex, transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroencephalography to study inhibition in choice RT tasks. We provide empirical support for the idea that inhibition does occur during choice RT, and the implications of those findings for various classes of choice RT models are discussed. The nogo potentials (N2/P3) were studied in a precuing auditory reaction time task in human subjects who had to either perform a button-press response (Press condition) or imagine they were performing it (Imagine condition). In the full precue condition (the subjects knew in advance which response they had to perform/imagine), in 25% of the trials, a nogo signal instructed the subject not to perform or not to imagine the prepared action. Clear N2/P3 components were obtained on nogo trials on the Press trials, but also on the Imagine ones: the N2 was of similar amplitude in both conditions, whereas the P3 was of smaller amplitude in the Imagine condition. The presence of nogo potential in motor imagery is discussed in terms of the functional significance of the N2/P3 complex. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A slow brain potential change, the contingent negative variation (CNV), was recorded in a temporal generalization schedule. The task was to judge the duration of a signal (1.250 to 3.125 s) as being equal or not to that of a 2-s target that had been previously memorized. Two signal modalities, visual and tactile, were contrasted in distinct trial blocks, in order to explore possible localization differences. Significant results were found at CPz, irrespective of signal modality. The CNV that developed during signal presentation peaked around 2 s and then declined when the current signal was longer than the 2-s target, instead of peaking at signal extinction as was the case for shorter signals. Thus, for signals longer than the target, the CNV peak and the following slope change provide a memory trace of the encoded target duration, leading to decision making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract From electroencephalographic recordings, we estimated the surface Laplacian over motor areas in a Stroop-like between-hand choice reaction time task in humans. Response-locked averages showed a (negative) “motor potential” over the primary motor areas contralateral to the response. At the same time, a positive wave was observed over the primary motor areas ipsilateral to the response. These data suggest that, when a between-hand choice is required, an inhibition of the primary motor cortex ipsilateral to the nonresponding hand is implemented. This observation is relevant to the interpretation of the lateralized readiness potential (LRP) because the LRP is blind to the respective contribution of the contralateral and ipsilateral motor cortices. In addition, a negative wave beginning about 200 ms before EMG onset and peaking about 50 ms before it occurred over the supplementary motor areas (FCz). This wave preceded the motor potential, which supports the view that the supplementary motor areas are upstream in a hierarchy of the motor command. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• "Partially correct" activities evoke a sizeable Ne. • Correcting response of trials containing a partially correct evokes no Nc at all. • Nc exists because the correctness of response execution cannot be fully predicted. In healthy subjects, the Error Negativity (Ne) was initially reported on errors and on partial errors, only. Later on, application of the Laplacian transformation to EEG data unmasked a Ne-like wave (Nc) that shares a main generator with the Ne, suggesting that the Nc is just a small Ne. However, the reason why a small Ne would persist on correct responses remains unclear. Now, sometimes, subthreshold EMG activations in the muscles corresponding to correct responses (not strong enough to reach the response threshold) can precede full-blown correct responses. These "partially correct" activities seem to correspond to (force) execution errors, as they evoke a sizeable Ne. Within the frames of the Reward Value and Prediction Model or of the Predicted Response-Outcome model we propose that the action monitoring system evokes a Ne/Nc on correct responses because, even when a correct choice has been made, the accuracy of response (force) execution cannot be fully predicted. If this interpretation is correct, it can be assumed that, once these execution errors have been corrected, the correctness of the (full-blown) correcting response is highly predictable. Consequently, they should evoke a smaller Nc/Ne than "pure" correct responses. We show, that for the response thresholds set in the present experiment, the correcting response of the trials containing a partially correct activation evoke no identifiable Nc at all. Therefore it seems that there usually is an Error Negativity on correct trials because the correctness of response (force) execution cannot be fully predicted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The programming processes concerned with response duration were studied in a precueing and in a priming reaction time (RT) paradigm. Participants had to produce a motor response of a specified duration as soon as possible after a response signal (RS) preceded by a warning signal (WS), which could deliver information on 2 response parameters (duration and effector). In Experiment I (precueing; N = 12), 3 effectors (the right hand, the left hand, or the knees) and 3 durations (.7, 2.5, or 5.5 s) were contrasted. Two responses differing in their biomechanical features were required in 2 blocks of trials: Subjects had to accurately time the duration of either a sustained button press or an interval between 2 brief presses. The RT patterns revealed a short-long effect: Shorter RTs were produced before the short duration than before the longer, provided that the duration was not precued. This short-long effect occurred whatever type of response and effector were involved. Two conclusions were reached. First, response duration was included in the motor program elaborated before execution, whatever the biomechanical features of the response; and, second, the program for the short duration was activated on all trials and was used as a basis for programming longer durations when needed. These conclusions were tested in Experiment 2 (priming; N = 12), in which a small proportion of invalid trials concerning duration was provided. Thus, the duration required by the RS differed from that primed by the WS. Two durations (.7 or 2.5 s) and 2 effectors (the index or the middle finger) were involved. In the invalid trials, the responses of short and long durations did not yield any RT differences, thus confirming the particular status of the short duration. This suggests that deprogramming operations (which lengthen the RT) are needed after a RS to produce short response durations but not after a RS to produce long response durations in the invalid trials. We investigate the orthorhombic distortion and the structural dynamics of epitaxial MnAs layers on GaAs(001) using static and time-resolved x-ray diffraction. Laser-induced intensity oscillations of Bragg reflections allow us to identify the optical phonon associated with orthorhombic distortion and to follow its softening along the path towards an undistorted phase of hexagonal symmetry. The frequency of this mode falls in the THz range, in agreement with recent calculations. Incomplete softening suggests that the β-γ transformation deviates from a purely second-order displacive transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN DBS) is known to increase response speed and lower response accuracy in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. It has been proposed that this speed-accuracy tradeoff is due to enhanced sensitivity of the motor system to sensory information. An alternative possibility is that this effect is due to weakened suppressive processes. The two alternative interpretations can be tested by analyzing the electromyographic activity (EMG) of the response agonists when the patients perform conflict reaction time tasks. In those tasks, fast subthreshold muscle impulses often occur in the agonist of the incorrect response. These impulses are partial errors that are suppressed before being behaviourally committed. Material and methods Here we analyzed the EMG of the response agonists recorded while sixteen PD patients performed a Simon task that elicits prepotent response tendencies so as to decipher (i) whether STN DBS affects the expression and/or suppression of subthreshold muscle impulses that are critical for action control and (ii) the interaction between dopaminergic treatment and STN DBS. The patients were tested On and Off STN DBS and On and Off dopaminergic medication in a full factorial design. Results STN DBS not only impaired the proficiency to suppress subliminal action impulses (p = 0.01) but also favoured the muscular expression of fast incorrect impulses (p < 0.001). Dopaminergic treatment only affected the action impulses suppression (p = 0.02) and did not change the effect of STN DBS on impulsive action control. Conclusion Contrary to a recent proposal, STN DBS impaired rather than improved action control by weakening erroneous impulse suppression, whether the patients were On or Off their usual medication. These findings are discussed in light of a recent proposal ( Servant M, White C, Montagnini A, Burle B, 2015) that reconciles partial errors with accumulation-to-bound models of decision making. Our results suggest that medication specifically lowers the mechanical threshold while STN DBS lowers the mechanical threshold and to a lesser extent the EMG-threshold. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spintronic devices currently rely on magnetization control by external magnetic fields or spin-polarized currents. Developing temperature-driven magnetization control has potential for achieving enhanced device functionalities. Recently, there has been much interest in thermally induced magnetisation switching (TIMS), where the temperature control of intrinsic material properties drives a deterministic switching without applying external fields. TIMS, mainly investigated in rare-earth-transition-metal ferrimagnets, has also been observed in epitaxial Fe/MnAs/GaAs(001), where it stems from a completely different physical mechanism. In Fe/MnAs temperature actually modifies the surface dipolar fields associated with the MnAs magnetic microstructure. This in turn determines the effective magnetic field acting on the Fe overlayer. In this way one can reverse the Fe magnetization direction by performing thermal cycles at ambient temperatures. Here we use element selective magnetization measurements to demonstrate that various magnetic configurations of the Fe/MnAs/GaAs(001) system are stabilized predictably by acting on the thermal cycle parameters and on the presence of a bias field. We show in particular that the maximum temperature reached during the cycle affects the final magnetic configuration. Our findings show that applications are possible for fast magnetization switching, where local temperature changes are induced by laser excitations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ability to predict when an event will occur allows us to respond optimally to that event. Temporal predictability can be either fixed (prior probability) or evolving (posterior probability), in which case it is dynamically updated as a function of the elapse of time itself (“hazard function”). We used fMRI to identify the brain regions involved in either form of temporal prediction, within a single experimental paradigm. Participants performed a cued reaction time (RT) task, in which the target appeared after one of four intervals (“foreperiods”) that was either predictable (temporal condition) or variable (neutral condition). As expected, RTs were faster in temporal versus neutral conditions, indicating the behavioural benefit of fixed temporal predictability. RTs also got faster as a function of foreperiod in the neutral, but not temporal, condition, reflecting the evolving temporal predictability of the hazard function. We confirmed that left inferior parietal cortex was preferentially activated by the fixed temporal predictability of temporal (versus neutral) cues. Then, by directly comparing how activity varied as a function of foreperiod in the neutral versus time conditions, we identified the neural substrates of the changes in temporal probability defined by the hazard function, while simultaneously controlling for changes related simply to the elapse of time itself. Whole-brain fMRI analyses (independently confirmed by anatomically guided ROI analyses) showed that activity in left inferior parietal cortex tracked the evolving temporal probabilities of the hazard function. ROI analysis further revealed a similar role for right inferior frontal cortex. Our data highlight a key role for left parietal cortex in instantiating the behavioural benefits of temporal predictability, whether predictions are fixed or dynamically evolving. The aim of the present study was to decipher the role of the dopamine system in impulse control. Impulsive actions entail (i) activation of the motor system by an impulse, which is an urge to act and (ii) a failure to suppress that impulse, when inappropriate, in order to prevent an error. These two aspects of action impulsivity can be experimentally disentangled in conflict reaction time tasks such as the Simon task, which measures susceptibility to acting on spontaneous impulses (as well as the proficiency of suppressing these impulses). In 12 healthy volunteers performing a Simon task, dopamine availability was reduced with an amino acid drink deficient in the dopamine precursors, phenylalanine and tyrosine. Classic behavioral measures were augmented with an analysis of the electromyographic activity of the response effectors. Electromyography allows one to detect covert activations undetectable with strictly behavioral measures and further reveals the participants' ability to quickly suppress covert activations before they result in an overt movement. Following dopamine depletion, compared with a placebo condition, participants displayed comparable impulse activation but were less proficient at suppressing the interference from this activation. Attention can be directed not only toward a location in space but also to a moment in time ("temporal orienting"). Temporally informative cues allow subjects to predict when an imminent event will occur, thereby speeding responses to that event. In contrast to spatial orienting, temporal orienting preferentially activates left inferior parietal cortex. Yet, left parietal cortex is also implicated in selective motor attention, suggesting its activation during temporal orienting could merely reflect incidental engagement of preparatory motor processes. Using fMRI, we therefore examined whether temporal orienting would still activate left parietal cortex when the cued target required a difficult perceptual discrimination rather than a speeded motor response. Behaviorally, temporal orienting improved accuracy of target identification as well as speed of target detection, demonstrating the general utility of temporal cues. Crucially, temporal orienting selectively activated left inferior parietal cortex for both motor and perceptual versions of the task. Moreover, conjunction analysis formally revealed a region deep in left intraparietal sulcus (IPS) as common to both tasks, thereby identifying it as a core neural substrate for temporal orienting. Despite the context-independent nature of left IPS activation, complementary psychophysiological interaction analysis revealed how the functional connectivity of left IPS changed as a function of task context. Specifically, left IPS activity covaried with premotor activity during motor temporal orienting but with visual extrastriate activity during perceptual temporal orienting, thereby revealing a cooperative network that comprises both temporal orienting and task-specific processing nodes. The capacity to adjust behavior and evaluate performance in a changing environment is highly related to taking feedback into account. Using feedback is, hence, crucial for different cognitive capacities. The present study focused on feedback processing in hypothetico-deductive reasoning. Electroencephalographical (EEG) activity was recorded while participants performed a hypothesis-testing task in which a feedback signal allowing the evaluation of performance was delivered at each trial. To ameliorate the spatial resolution of EEG signals, the surface Laplacian was estimated. Results showed three distinct patterns of activation. At central and centro-parietal electrodes, the activity was sensitive to participants' expectancies in a binary and a gradual way, respectively. At the parieto-occipital electrode, the activity was sensitive to the evaluation of performance itself: correct versus false. Abstract: Falkenstein et al. (1991) first described a negative wave occurring just after an erroneous response in choice Reaction time tasks (“Error Negativity”—Ne or “Error Related Negativity”—ERN). Thanks to Laplacian transform of the data, Vidal et al. (2000, 2003a) described a wave on correct trials with similar topography and latency, although of smaller amplitude compared to the errors. A critical question is whether the Ne observed on errors and the negativity reported on correct trials reflect the same (modulated) activity, or whether they reflect completely different mechanisms. These two alternative possibilities were tested thanks to Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and source localization. ICA results showed that the waves recorded on errors and correct trials can be accounted for by the same independent component, corresponding to a dipolar source located within the Rostral Cingulate Zone. Source localization on the raw data also confirmed a common generator for correct and error trials. These data suggest that the waves on errors and correct trials reflect the same brain activity, whose amplitude varies as a function of the correctness of the response. The ability to stop ongoing motor responses in a splitsecond is a vital element of human cognitive control and flexibility that relies in large part on prefrontal cortex. We used the stop-signal paradigm to elucidate the engagement of primary motor cortex (M1) in inhibiting an ongoing voluntary motor response. The stop-signal paradigm taps the ability to flexibly countermand ongoing voluntary behavior upon presentation of a stop signal. We applied single-pulse TMS to M1 at several intervals following the stop signal to track the time course of excitability of the motor system related to generating and stopping a manual response. Electromyography recorded from the flexor pollicis brevis allowed quantification of the excitability of the corticospinal tract and the involvement of intracortical GABABergic circuits within M1, indexed respectively by the amplitude of the motor-evoked potential and the duration of the late part of the cortical silent period (SP). The results extend our knowledge of the neural basis of inhibitory control in three ways. First, the results revealed a dynamic interplay between response activation and stopping processes at M1 level during stop-signal inhibition of an ongoing response. Second, increased excitability of inhibitory interneurons that drives SP prolongation was evident as early as 134 msec following the instruction to stop. Third, this pattern was followed by a stop-related reduction of corticospinal excitability implemented around 180 after the stop signal. These findings point to the recruitment of GABABergic intracortical inhibitory circuits within M1 in stop-signal inhibition and support the notion of stopping as an active act of control. In a common version of the Simon task, the subjects respond by a left- or a right-hand key press to the color of a stimulus (S) presented to the left or right of a fixation point. Albeit S location is irrelevant, the incorrect response is more often activated when the required response is contralateral to the S (incongruent) than when it is ipsilateral to the S (congruent). The aim of the present study was to decipher the respective contributions of S-response key location correspondence and S-hand correspondence to such incorrect activations (IAs). The subjects were required to perform a Simon task with the arms not crossing and crossing the median plane. Present for both arm placements, the difference in the frequency of IAs between incongruent and congruent responses was smaller when the arms were crossed. IAs are (i) essentially due to S-key location correspondence and (ii) less influenced by S-hand correspondence. The temporal discrimination paradigm requires subjects to compare the duration of a probe stimulus to that of a sample previously stored in working or long-term memory, thus providing an index of timing that is independent of a motor response. However, the estimation process itself comprises several component cognitive processes, including timing, storage, retrieval, and comparison of durations. Previous imaging studies have attempted to disentangle these components by simply measuring brain activity during early versus late scanning epochs. We aim to improve the temporal resolution and precision of this approach by using rapid event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging to time-lock the hemodynamic response to presentation of the sample and probe stimuli themselves. Compared to a control (color-estimation) task, which was matched in terms of difficulty, sustained attention, and motor preparation requirements, we found selective activation of the left putamen for the storage (''encoding'') of stimulus duration into working memory (WM). Moreover, increased putamen activity was linked to enhanced timing performance, suggesting that the level of putamen activity may modulate the depth of temporal encoding. Retrieval and comparison of stimulus duration in WM selectively activated the right superior temporal gyrus. Finally, the supplementary motor area was equally active during both sample and probe stages of the task, suggesting a fundamental role in timing the duration of a stimulus that is currently unfolding in time. Abstract: The objective was to test whether motor preparation can modulate the efficiency of the cortical motor command. The electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded from electrodes located over the primary sensorimotor cortices during the performance of a between-hand choice reaction time task in which foreperiod duration (the interval between the warning and the imperative signals, 800 vs. 2800ms) was varied across blocks of trials. In order to increase the spatial resolution of the EEG traces, surface Laplacian was estimated. The amplitude of the negative wave developing over the hemisphere contralateral to the response was smaller for the short foreperiod associated with the best performance level. These results indicate that the activation of the primary sensorimotor cortex involved in the response is less pronounced for the short foreperiod, suggesting that temporal advance information increases the efficiency of the cortical motor command. Although it is widely accepted that control mechanisms are necessary for human behavior to be adapted, very little is known about how such mechanisms are recruited. A suggestion to fill the gap was put forward by M. M. Botvinick, T. S. Braver, C. S. Carter, D. M. Barch, and J. D. Cohen (2001), who proposed the conflict-loop theory. This theory has been successful in accounting for the reduction of compatibility effects after an incompatible trial: The level of conflict being, on average, higher during an incompatible trial, more control occurs after such a trial. The authors have tested this prediction by sorting the trials on the basis of amount of conflict (quantified by the electromyographic activity) they presented. A reduction of the compatibility effect was observed after incompatible trials, but it was independent of the level of conflict on previous trials, suggesting that the conflict does not trigger changes in executive control. It is shown that information on the spatial correlation of nano‐objects embedded in a crystalline matrix can be retrieved by analysing the X‐ray scattering around the Bragg reflections of the host matrix. Data are reported for vertically aligned Ni and CoNi alloy nanowires (NWs) in an SrTiO3 matrix. When the Bragg condition is fulfilled for the matrix and not for the NWs, the latter can be approximated by voids, and the scattering around the matrix reflections contains information on the self‐correlation of the NWs (i.e. on their diameter d) and on the correlation between NWs (interdistance D). Nondestructive synchrotron X‐ray diffraction data provide information on these values averaged over large areas, complementing local transmission electron microscopy observations. The measurements show that off‐Bragg scattering around the matrix reflections can be exploited to study the spatial correlation and morphology of embedded nano‐objects, independently of their crystallinity or strain or the presence of defects. Manual responses to lateralized stimuli are faster for spatially congruent stimulus-response associations than for incongruent associations, even if the stimulus location is irrelevant. This effect, however, decreases as reaction time increases. Recent data suggest that such a decrease reflects online, within-trial executive control. The present study was aimed at testing this hypothesis by analyzing the electromyographic activity of muscles involved in response execution. We focused on the particular trials in which an activation of the muscle involved to the incorrect response preceded the execution of the correct response. A sequential effect analysis, along with an analysis of the reaction time distributions, revealed that after such dual-activation trials, executive control was reinforced. In addition, a distribution analysis of the reaction times associated with such trials compared to the trials without incorrect activation, revealed online, within-trial changes in executive control. Arguments against a late motor locus of the effect of the irrelevant stimulus location are also provided. These results are discussed in terms of current models of cognitive control. The present study was aimed at deciphering whether the delay in choice reaction time (RT) and the silent period (SP) caused by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the motor cortex in the ongoing electromyogram are due to the same physiological mechanism. To this end, the effect of TMS was studied in 6 healthy volunteers performing a between-hand choice RT task. Specific predictions were derived from a logic inspired from the "postponed stages" hypothesis (Pashler & Johnson, 1989). This logic predicts a correlation between SP duration and RT when the stimulated cortex is involved in the response, and a stronger correlation when the stimulation is delivered later during the RT interval. The effect of TMS on RT was twofold: At early stimulation times, the stimulation shortened the RT and this effect was independent of the involvement of the stimulated motor cortex in the subsequent response. At later stimulation times. TMS had a disruptive effect, provided that the stimulated cortex was involved in the response. When the stimulated cortex was involved in the response, there was a correlation between SP and RT; this correlation was stronger when the stimulation occurred later. Our study is demonstrated a new type of evolutionary sound synthesis method. This work based on the fly algorithm, a cooperative co-evolution algorithm; it is derived from the Parisian evolution approach. The algorithm has relatively amended the position of individuals (the Flies) represented by 3-D points. The fly algorithm has successfully investigated in different applications, starting with a real-time stereo vision for robotics. Also, the algorithm shows promising results in tomography to reconstruct 3-D images. The final application of the fly algorithm was generating artistic images, such as digital mosaics. In all these applications, the flies' representation started for simple, 3-D points, to complex one, the structure of 9-elements. Our method follows evolutionary digital art with the fly algorithm in representing the pattern of the flies. They represented in a way of having their structure. This structure includes position, colour, rotation angle, and size. Strain relaxation occurring during epitaxial thin film growth on lattice mismatched substrates has been studied extensively. However, it remains unclear whether existing concepts, developed to describe planar interfaces, still apply to vertically aligned nanocomposites (VANs). In these hybrid systems, which consist of nanowires (NWs) epitaxially coupled to a surrounding single crystal matrix, the structure of the vertical heterointerface is still terra incognita. In the present work, we study CoNi:SrTiO3 as a prototype VAN with large lattice mismatch between the oxide host and the embedded metallic phase. We show that the NWs display a variety of strain states: we identify NWs with huge average tensile strains (2.4 to 4.2%) along their [001] axis, as well as partially relaxed segments, with (101) and (111) planes almost parallel to those of the matrix. An additional relaxation mechanism is identified in Ni-rich VANs, where the rotation of parts of the NWs provides lattice matching for a set of (101) planes at the NW/matrix interface. Surprisingly, this tilting mechanism depends on the composition of the CoNi alloy. For high Co content (57% and 78%), the lattice matching with the matrix is along one set of (111) planes, with creation of (111) stacking faults, a behavior that can be attributed to the increasing influence of the fcc/hcp phase transition. This sheds light on the complex structural rearrangements at play in VANs and illustrates the fundamental differences between planar and vertical epitaxy in metal/oxide systems. Manganese arsenide layers epitaxially grown on GaAs(001) are known to feature a temperature dependent self-assembled microstructure of ordered stripes, alternating the ferromagnetic α and paramagnetic β phases. The surface dipolar fields generated by the α/β stripes have been used for achieving temperature controlled magnetization switching of a ferromagnetic overlayer. For this kind of application, it is advantageous to minimize the MnAs layer thickness. In this work we investigate, using x-ray scattering techniques, the presence of the ordered microstructure as a function of the MnAs layer thickness and we identify a minimum value of ∼40 nm for the formation of ordered α/β stripes in MnAs/GaAs(001). These results have an impact for envisaging magnetization-switching applications that rely on the control of the temperature—or laser-driven surface dipolar fields in MnAs-based devices. The present study was conducted to decipher whether a spatial correspondence effect can emerge in Go/No-Go tasks (cSE, in reference to Donders' type c task) performed in isolation (participant alone in the cubicle). To this aim, a single participant was centrally positioned in front of a device and was required to respond by a hand key-press to the color of the stimulus. Half the participants were seated in front of a table equipped with only one response key and the other half in front of a table equipped with two response keys (one active and the other one useless). Using a substantial number of subjects (48) and trials (960), the present study revealed a numerically small but statistically reliable cSE. This result contrasts with referential coding predictions and suggests that the representation of a concurrently active response is not a prerequisite for the cSE to emerge. Moreover, the presence of a second response button in the participant's peripersonal space exerted no measurable influence on the cSE. Background and objectives: This study provides a quantitative comparison of images created using gVirtualXray (gVXR) to both Monte Carlo (MC) and real images of clinically realistic phantoms. gVirtualXray is an open-source framework that relies on the Beer-Lambert law to simulate X-ray images in realtime on a graphics processor unit (GPU) using triangular meshes. Methods: Images are generated with gVirtualXray and compared with a corresponding ground truth image of an anthropomorphic phantom: (i) an X-ray projection generated using a Monte Carlo simulation code, (ii) real digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs), (iii) computed tomography (CT) slices, and (iv) a real radiograph acquired with a clinical X-ray imaging system. When real images are involved, the simulations are used in an image registration framework so that the two images are aligned. Results: The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) between the images simulated with gVirtualXray and MC is 3.12%, the zero-mean normalised cross-correlation (ZNCC) is 99.96% and the structural similarity index (SSIM) is 0.99. The run-time is 10 days for MC and 23 ms with gVirtualXray. Images simulated using surface models segmented from a CT scan of the Lungman chest phantom were similar to (i) DRRs computed from the CT volume and (ii) an actual digital radiograph. CT slices reconstructed from images simulated with gVirtualXray were comparable to the corresponding slices of the original CT volume. Conclusions: When scattering can be ignored, accurate images that would take days using MC can be generated in milliseconds with gVirtualXray. This speed of execution enables the use of repetitive simulations with varying parameters, e.g. to generate training data for a deep-learning algorithm, and to minimise the objective function of an optimisation problem in image registration. The use of surface models enables the combination of X-ray simulation with real-time soft-tissue deformation and character animation, which can be deployed in virtual reality applications. We have investigated by time-resolved X-ray diffraction the manganese arsenide structure dynamics in MnAs/GaAs (001) epitaxial films, when the $\alpha \to \beta $ magnetostructural phase transition is triggered by an ultra-fast optical laser pulse. Understanding the photo-induced phase transition dynamics is relevant for applications of MnAs/GaAs (001) as a magnetically active template in laser-induced magnetization switching processes. In between-hand choice-RT-tasks, small incorrect EMG activations occurring before the correct response (“partial errors”) are assumed to reflect the detection, inhibition and correction of erroneous hand selection, revealing the existence of an action monitoring system, acting “on-line”. Now, EMG activations of the correctly selected hand muscles, too small to reach the response threshold, may also occur before these hand muscles produce an overt correct response (“partial corrects”). We hypothesized that partial corrects reflect incorrect execution of correctly selected responses. We found 1) that response force was smaller on trials preceding a partial correct trial and 2) that the Error Negativity, a performance sensitive ERP, assumed to reveal “on-line” action monitoring, was larger for partial corrects than for correct trials. We study the optical properties of arrays of ultrathin cobalt nanowires by means of the Brillouin scattering of light on magnons. We employ the Stokes/anti-Stokes scattering asymmetry to probe the circular polarization of a local electric field induced inside nanowires by linearly polarized light waves. We observe the anomalous polarization conversion of the opposite sign than that in a bulk medium or thick nanowires with a great enhancement of the degree of circular polarization attributed to the unconventional refraction in a nanowire medium. A rigorous simulation of the electric field polarization as a function of the wire diameter and spacing reveals the reversed polarization for a thin sparse wire array, in full quantitative agreement with experimental results. Estimating duration depends on the sequential integration (accumulation) of temporal information in working memory. Using fMRI, we directly compared the accumulation of information in temporal versus spatial domains. Participants estimated either the duration or distance of the dynamic trajectory of a moving dot or, in a control condition, a static line stimulus. Comparing the duration versus distance of static lines activated an extensive cortico-striatal network. By contrast, comparing the duration versus distance of dynamic trajectories, both of which required sequential integration of information, activated SMA alone. Indeed, activity in SMA, as well as right inferior occipital cortex, increased parametrically as a function of stimulus duration and also correlated with individual differences in the propensity to overestimate stimulus duration. By contrast, activity in primary visual cortex increased parametrically as a function of stimulus distance. Crucially, a direct comparison of the parametric responses to duration versus distance revealed that activity in SMA increased incrementally as a function of stimulus duration but not as a function of stimulus distance. Performing more poorly given one's skill level ('choking') is likely in situations that offer an incentive if a certain outcome is achieved (outcome pressure) or when one is being watched by others-especially when one's performance is being evaluated (monitoring pressure). According to the choking literature, outcome pressure is associated with reduced executive control of attention, whereas monitoring pressure is associated with increased, yet counterproductive, attention to skill processes. Here, we show the first evidence that monitoring pressure-being watched by the experimenter-may lead individuals with higher working memory to choke on a classic measure of executive control-just the task effect thought to result from outcome pressure. Not only does this finding help refine our understanding of the processes underlying choking under monitoring pressure, but it also leads to a new look at classic audience effects, with an important implication for experimental psychology. Among the different brain imaging techniques, electroencephalography (EEG) is classically considered as having an excellent temporal resolution, but a poor spatial one. Here, we argue that the actual temporal resolution of conventional (scalp potentials) EEG is overestimated, and that volume conduction, the main cause of the poor spatial resolution of EEG, also distorts the recovered time course of the underlying sources at scalp level, and hence degrades the actual temporal resolution of EEG. While Current Source Density (CSD) estimates, through the Surface Laplacian (SL) computation, are well known to dramatically reduce volume conduction effects and hence improve EEG spatial resolution, its positive impact on EEG temporal resolution is much less recognized. In two simulation studies, we first show how volume conduction and reference electrodes distort the scalp potential time course, and how SL transform provides a much better spatio-temporal description. We then exemplify similar effects on two empirical datasets. We show how the time courses of the scalp potentials mis-estimate the latencies of the relevant brain events and that CSD provides a much richer, and much more accurate, view of the spatio-temporal dynamics of brain activity. Rationale: Impulsive actions entail (1) capture of the motor system by an action impulse, which is an urge to act and (2) failed suppression of that impulse in order to prevent a response error. Several studies indicate that dopaminergic treatment can induce action impulsivity in patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD). Whether this effect is due to increased impulse expression or to decreased impulse suppression remains to be deciphered. Method: We used a novel approach based on electromyographic (EMG) analyses to decipher the effects of the patient's usual dopaminergic therapy on the expression and suppression of subliminal erroneous impulses. To this end, we used a within-subject design and took advantage of the Simon task, that elicits prepotent response tendencies. The patients ( N = 15) performed the task on their usual dopaminergic medication and after complete medication withdrawal (for at least 12 h). Results: The correction rate that measures the ability to suppress subthreshold impulsive muscle activity was lower when the patients were on medication as compared to their off medication state ( p < 0.05). The incorrect activation rate that measures the capture of the motor system by action impulses was unaffected by medication. Conclusions: Dopa therapy affected action impulsivity. Although medication did not influence the incidence of fast action impulses, it significantly reduced patients' ability to abort and suppress muscle activation related to the incorrect response alternative. Typing is a pervasive phenomenon, yet the underlying neural processes have hardly been studied. Here, the mechanisms of keystroke preparation were studied with a typed picture-naming task performed by expert typists. Electroencephalographic activities recorded over sensorimotor areas prior to first-keystroke onset were examined with time-frequency and event-related potential ( ERP) analyses. In the time-frequency domain, a beta event-related desynchronization was present bilaterally. In the ERP analyses, the activity was asymmetric, with negativity and positivity patterns developing over, respectively, contra- and ipsilateral recording sites. This pattern is similar to that observed in choice reaction time tasks, and thus can be interpreted as evidence of contralateral motor cortex activation accompanied by inhibition of the ipsilateral motor cortex. The capacity to evaluate the outcomes of our actions is fundamental for adapting and optimizing behavior and depends on an action-monitoring system that assesses ongoing actions and detects errors. The neuronal network underlying this executive function, classically attributed to the rostral cingulate zone, is poorly characterized in humans, owing to the limited number of direct neurophysiological data. Using intracerebral recordings, we show that the leading rote is played by the supplementary motor area (SMA), which rapidly evaluates successful and erroneous actions. The rostral part of media[ prefrontal cortex, driven by the SMA, was activated tater and exclusively in the case of errors. Intentional actions are executed with the peculiar experience of 'I decide to do that.' It has been proposed that intentional actions involve a specific brain network involving the supplementary motor areas (SMAs). Here, we manipulated the internal representation participants attended to (intention vs. movement) in order to (1) examine the activity of SMAs and of the primary motor cortex (M1) during intentional action preparation and execution, and (2) investigate the temporal relationship between activity in these structures and intention awareness. Participants performed self-paced key presses. After each key press, participants were asked to report either the time they had the first intention to press the key (W-condition) or the time they actually started the movement (M-condition). We then estimated surface Laplacians from brain electrical potentials recorded while participants were performing the task. Activity in SMAs was greater in the W-condition than in the M-condition more than 1 s before electromyographic (EMG) activation, suggesting that this region is indeed associated to the formation of conscious intention. Conversely, activity in primary motor cortex (M1) contralateral to the responding hand was larger in the M-condition than in the W-condition, revealing that this region is also modulated by top-down processes. In addition, waveforms time-locked to the W-judgement revealed that M1 as well as EMG activation preceded the time at which participants become aware of their intention by about 0.3 s. The most advanced X-ray sources (third generation synchrotrons, linear free-electron lasers and high-harmonic generation sources) widen the range of application of X-ray scattering techniques considerably. Beyond flux and brilliance, improvements in polarization tuneability, degree of coherence and selectable time-structure promoted new methods for investigating the electronic and magnetic properties of solids. The soft X-ray range (50–2000 eV) is well suited for studying magneto-optical effects in laterally confined submicron sized objects, either artificially built or self-assembled. First, by tuning the photon energy at a core resonance, one provides the X-ray scattering technique with element selectivity. Second, resonant excitations make the optical constants sensitive to the local magnetization by introducing large off-diagonal elements in the dielectric tensor; since magnetic effects are stronger when the core excitation produces a dipolar transition to final states involving the magnetic orbitals (3d for the first row TM; 4f for RE), the most interesting resonances for X-ray magneto-optics [(2, 3)p \to 3 d and (3, 4)d \to 4 f] are all located in the soft X-ray region. Finally, the wavelengths corresponding to soft X-rays are very well suited for scattering studies of nanometer- to micrometer-sized magnetic structures. We will present the results of recent soft X-ray resonant scattering experiments, showing that the combination of element selectivity, magnetic sensitivity and structural analysis can help disentangling and understanding the magnetic properties of complex self-assembled periodic systems.
