Abstract

Aborda los aspectos relacionados con la definición de la corrosión bajo tensión como la aceleración del ataque de la corrosión debido a una solicitación mecánica, tratándose de la sustitución de una agresividad aparente soportante por una agresividad específica pequeña o media. Cuando actúa una solicitación mecánica sobre un metal que se halle en un medio corrosivo, puede originarse agrietamiento con posterior rotura. La solicitación mecánica puede ser debida a tensiones externas o bien tratarse de esfuerzos alternados, dándose entonces en fenómeno de fatiga por corrosión. Tanto en el agrietamiento por tensocorrosión como en la fatiga, la corrosión, expresada en material disuelto es muy escasa, mientras que los efectos son espectaculares.

Abstract

Aborda los elementos esenciales relacionados con el deterioro de las edificaciones construidas con estructuras metálicas, producidos principalmente por la exposición de los elementos estructurales a un medio agresivo ya sea natural (zonas costeras) o generado por la actividad del hombre (centro de grandes ciudades o industrias). En todos los casos existe un sin número de factores que influyen negativamente sobre la superficie de estos elementos acelerando los procesos de corrosión entre los que se encuentran: el aerosol marino y los contaminantes, temperatura, humedad relativa, volúmenes de precipitaciones y características de los vientos, valores que se obtuvieron utilizando métodos actualizados de investigación. Para determinar las principales patologías es necesario además diferenciar las que afectan la estética y funcionabilidad y las que afectan la capacidad portante o resistencia de los elementos estructurales provocando grandes pérdidas por el deterioro de los mismos.

Abstract

Background: Despite advances in surgery and pharmacotherapy, there remains significant residual ischemic risk after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. Methods: In REDUCE-IT (Reduction of Cardiovascular Events With Icosapent Ethyl–Intervention Trial), a multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial, statin-treated patients with controlled low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and mild to moderate hypertriglyceridemia were randomized to 4 g daily of icosapent ethyl or placebo. They experienced a 25% reduction in risk of a primary efficacy end point (composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke, coronary revascularization, or hospitalization for unstable angina) and a 26% reduction in risk of a key secondary efficacy end point (composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke) when compared with placebo. The current analysis reports on the subgroup of patients from the trial with a history of coronary artery bypass grafting. Results: Of the 8179 patients randomized in REDUCE-IT, a total of 1837 (22.5%) had a history of coronary artery bypass grafting, with 897 patients randomized to icosapent ethyl and 940 to placebo. Baseline characteristics were similar between treatment groups. Randomization to icosapent ethyl was associated with a significant reduction in the primary end point (hazard ratio [HR], 0.76 [95% CI, 0.63–0.92]; P =0.004), in the key secondary end point (HR, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.56–0.87]; P =0.001), and in total (first plus subsequent or recurrent) ischemic events (rate ratio, 0.64 [95% CI, 0.50–0.81]; P =0.0002) compared with placebo. This yielded an absolute risk reduction of 6.2% (95% CI, 2.3%–10.2%) in first events, with a number needed to treat of 16 (95% CI, 10–44) during a median follow-up time of 4.8 years. Safety findings were similar to the overall study: beyond an increased rate of atrial fibrillation/flutter requiring hospitalization for at least 24 hours (5.0% vs 3.1%; P =0.03) and a nonsignificant increase in bleeding, occurrences of adverse events were comparable between groups. Conclusions: In REDUCE-IT patients with a history of coronary artery bypass grafting, treatment with icosapent ethyl was associated with significant reductions in first and recurrent ischemic events. Abstract

Ticks are important vectors of pathogenic bacteria that cause diseases in both humans and animals. Analysis of tick microbiota via massive sequencing allows rapid and comprehensive identification of almost all bacteria inhabiting ticks. This has improved the detection of emerging pathogens and has helped define their relationship with public health. In Mexico, the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato) is a public health problem, especially in northeast Durango. In the present study, the bacterial microbiota of this tick was determined using third-generation massive sequencing (PacBio, V1–V9 region of the 16S rRNA gene); bacteria with pathogenic potential that are transmitted by salivation and those that can be transmitted by accidental regurgitation of the parasite were also identified. In 2024, 60 dogs were searched for unfed ticks; then, 15 groups of female ticks and 15 groups of male ticks were formed, with each group consisting of 30 individuals. DNA was extracted from each tick pool, and the complete 16S rRNA gene was amplified (PacBio). Bioinformatics analysis was performed in QIIME2 (Quantitative Insights into Microbial Ecology) to obtain amplicon sequence variants (ASVs). Alpha and beta diversity metrics, as well as statistical analyses, were performed to test for differences between the microbiota of females and males. The bacterial taxa were classified into 21 phyla, 24 classes, 81 orders, 137 families, 339 genera, and 565 species. The male microbiota presented a significantly greater number of ASVs and a greater phylogenetic diversity index (FaithPD). Additionally, the unweighted UniFrac metric was significantly different between the sexes. The endosymbiont Coxiella mudrowiae was significantly more abundant in females, and Ehrlichia canis was more abundant in males. The pathogens E. canis and Anaplasma platys (transmitted by salivation) were detected, as well as 75 species of potential pathogens recorded in this tick that could enter the host in case of accidental regurgitation of the parasite (e.g., Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Acinetobacter, Corynebacterium, Proteus, Clostridum, Klebsiella, Bacillus, Escherichia, Fusobacterium, and Pasteurella). It is necessary to continue analyzing the microbiota of ticks through massive sequencing for the benefit of public health and to establish new alternatives for controlling these parasites.

Abstract

Environmental pollution and natural degradation of materials cause deterioration in buildings, initiating pathological processes that require conservation actions. Architectural Photogrammetry will be discussed as a tool to identify different pathologies on buildings and to accurately measure deflections. A photographic study was conducted of the most common deflections on reinforced concrete structures, with samples of different ages and locations exposed to various environments within Holguin Province in Cuba to detect deterioration characteristics, causes and possible treatments. A comparative analysis of other common methods and instruments currently used to measure structural pathologies highlights the efficiency of architectural photogrammetry. Photogrammetry is suitable to study the most common pathologies, their causes, and potential solutions. These include: cracks, fissures, deflection in beams, footing settlement, slenderness in columns, and more. In addition to the scope and efficiency of photogrammetry, this technology also facilitates studying inaccessible points on large elements. The instantaneous recording of accurate data about physical objects gives photogrammetry advantages over conventional structural analysis methods.

Abstract

Preparing for natural disasters is vital for mitigating harm and loss of important cultural sites. In Cuba, this rigorous planning informed by years of experience has focused on the recuperation phase after a disaster or storm. Governmental agencies plan rehabilitation and reconstruction projects in the short, medium, and long term. Accurate models are essential for planning these recovery projects. Photogrammetry represents a novel way to create these models at a potentially city-wide scale. Images taken with conventional cameras are used for object measurement to create digital 3D models of buildings, which will be stored in an architectural database. Important cultural and historic sites were used as initial case studies for the creation of models through photogrammetry. These catalogs will facilitate the maintenance and assessment of these important sites and help to plan future reconstruction plans after a natural disaster. Photogrammetric corrections cause minimal graphic distortion to provide accurate metrics of geometric and decorative information. Examples of these techniques in other Latin American cities will also be discussed.

Abstract

Various medicinal plants are traditionally used in a hepatoprotective manner, like, for example, the Litchi chinensis leaf infusion that is employed in Chinese medicine as liver tonics to strengthen hepatic functioning. In this context, the present study was designed to evaluate the hepatoprotective and acute toxicological effects of hydroethanolic L. chinensis leaf extract in HepG2 cells and mice. Specifically, the cytotoxicity and hepatoprotective activities of L. chinensis leaf extract were evaluated in HepG2 cells and in vivo against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver injury. The administration of CCl4 in mice provokes cell swelling, loss of sinusoid capillary spaces and structural disarrangement of the hepatic lobe, apoptosis and leukocyte infiltration. Further, CCl4 evokes an increase in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in hepatic tissue. However, Silymarin, the positive control, and the L. chinensis extract were able to restore the viability of cells treated with CCl4 at all concentrations evaluated, reduced the inflammatory parameters, TNF and IL-6, reestablished hepatic tissue morphology and did not induce acute toxicological alterations. The data obtained underscore that the extract from L. chinensis leaves features hepatoprotective activity, corroborating with ethnopharmacological use, and does not lead to acute toxicological effects.

Abstract Background Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) is used to prevent or correct malnutrition in outpatients. Due to the complexity of this process, the indication, follow-up, and results of an educational program of HEN patients was evaluated. Methods A prospective, observational, real-life, multicenter study was performed in 21 Spanish Hospital. Patients receiving HEN by nasogastric tube or ostomy were included. The following variables were collected: age, gender, HEN indication, type of formula, nutritional requirements, laboratory variables, complications, and quality standards of the educational program. To calculate the energy and protein requirements, the FAO/WHO/UNU formula was used considering the adjusted weight of the patients. All data were analyzed using SPSS.24. Results 414 patients were included. Most conditions diagnosed were neurodegenerative diseases (64.8%). 100 (25.3%) were diabetic. The mean weight was 59.3 ± 10.4 kg and BMI 22.6 ± 3.2. Abstract This study evaluated the effectiveness of a biocoagulant produced from the devilfish invasive species and its combination with two chemical coagulants (aluminum sulfate and ferric sulfate) to remove turbidity, chemical oxygen demand, and total suspended solids in ceramic industry wastewater using a combined experimental design of Mixture-Process. This design optimized the coagulation process and evaluated the effects and interactions between mixture components and coagulant doses. An analysis of variance was used to analyze the experimental data obtained in the study, and the response surface plots by response type (turbidity, chemical oxygen demand, and total suspended solids) were obtained. Results showed that the coagulation treatment could be technically and economically feasible since efficiencies of turbidity, chemical oxygen demand, and total suspended solids removal of 74, 79, and 94% could be achieved using an optimal coagulant dose of 800 mg/L with a mixture of 35% biocoagulant and 65% ferric sulfate. Analysis of variance results showed that the models are significant, and the lack of fit is not required according to the probability value (p value), which were 0.05, respectively. Hence, the experimental data were fitted to a combined reduced special cubic x linear model. These results support the use of devilfish meal as a biocoagulant, being more feasible in dual systems when mixed with ferric sulfate.

Abstract

This work aimed to evaluate the devilfish bone char as an alternative material to be used as a bioanode in a microbial fuel cell (MFC) applied in bioenergy production from the pantoprazole biodegradation. The devilfish is an invasive species in Mexico and other countries, so its control and eradication are based on the integral use of its biomass. In addition, the bones are unusable waste and could be used as a raw material to manufacture the bioanode. Two MFCs with an anaerobic anode single chamber of 125 mL were operated independently using the fabricated bioanode and the carbon felt (conventional anode). Both MFCs were fed with 1 g/L of pantoprazole as substrate with a chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 210 ± 1.3 mg/L and 1.2 g of soil as inoculum. The two MFCs were characterized electrochemically, and the COD removal percentage was measured as an indicator of the pantoprazole biodegradation. The results showed that the MFC operated with the bioanode had a better performance than the conventional anode, since it reached a maximum power density of 1.22 mW/m2, being 156% higher than carbon felt. These values were consistent with the COD removal percentages reached in 10 days with values of 47.17 ± 0.23 and 43.34 ± 0.41%, respectively. Therefore, these findings provide a low-cost alternative carbonaceous material for the sustainable construction of MFC applied to produce bioenergy from the biodegradation of pharmaceutical products.

[Introducción]: Actualmente, el manejo adecuado de los residuos es uno de los retos ambientales a los que se enfrentan todos los países, en sus etapas de recolección, tratamiento y disposición. Generalmente, en cada nación, las autoridades gubernamentales prestan especial atención a las grandes ciudades, discriminando a localidades rurales; esto, derivado de una falta de recurso económico y técnico para tratar y disponer adecuadamente los residuos en estos sitios, por lo cual quedan como responsables las poblaciones de dar un manejo propio a sus residuos; sin embargo, no se tienen documentadas sus prácticas para tal fin. [Objetivo]: Se realizó un diagnóstico del manejo actual que se les da a los residuos en tres localidades rurales con grado medio de marginación, correspondientes a Colonia Hidalgo, Ejido Zaragoza y Plan de Guadalupe en Sombrerete (Zacatecas, México). [Metodología]: La información se obtuvo de la aplicación de un cuestionario tipo encuesta a una muestra representativa de cada una de las localidades. [Resultados]: Se determinó que la quema incontrolada de residuos es la práctica más realizada; los residuos orgánicos se utilizan como alimento para ganado en condiciones insalubres; los residuos susceptibles a reciclaje se separan, pero solo se vende una parte; los sacos de fertilizantes se reutilizan, y los contenedores de pesticidas se queman en condiciones incontroladas; prácticas que afectan el ambiente y la salud de la gente. [Conclusiones]: Se evidencia la falta de atención por parte de autoridades gubernamentales en el manejo de residuos en localidades rurales y marginadas, donde se recurre a prácticas insostenibles.

This work aimed to evaluate the ability of lipase extract powder obtained from Leonotis nepetifolia seed for enzyme-catalyzed biodiesel production using Leonotis nepetifolia oil, commercial olive oil, and waste cooking oil as substrates. The lipase extract powder showed an enzymatic activity and hydrolysis percentage of 24.7 U/g and 21.31%, respectively, using commercial olive oil as a reference. Transesterification reaction conditions were 40 g of substrate, 34 °C, molar ratio oil: methanol of 1:3, lipase extract powder 20 wt%, phosphates buffer (pH 4.8) 20 wt%, and a reaction time of 8 h. Transesterification yields of 74.5%, 71.5%, and 69.3% for commercial olive oil, waste cooking oil, and Leonotis nepetifolia oil were obtained, respectively. Biodiesel physicochemical parameters were analyzed and compared with the international standards: EN 14214 (European Union) and ASTM D6751 (American Society for Testing and Materials). The biodiesel’s moisture and volatile matter percentages, iodine index, cooper strip corrosion, and methyl esters content conformed to the standards’ specifications. The fatty acid methyl ester content of the vegetable oils showed the presence of methyl oleate after enzyme-catalyzed transesterification. This study reveals that biodiesel production catalyzed by lipase extract powder from Leonotis nepetifolia could be a viable alternative, showing that transesterification yields competitive results.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to detect and molecularly identify Rickettsia spp. in Rhipicephalus sanguineus (sensu lato) collected from free-roaming dogs in 30 communities from five municipalities in the south of Coahuila State, northern Mexico, where Rocky Mountain spotted fever is endemic. Methods In total, 60 dogs from each municipality were examined for engorged ticks. DNA was isolated from tick pools and conventional PCR assays targeting the 23S-5S ribosomal RNA intergenic spacer and outer membrane protein (ompA) gene of Rickettsia spp. were performed. Results All ticks (n = 1238) were morphologically identified as R. sanguineus (s.l.). Six pools (each with six engorged females) from four municipalities were positive to Rickettsia spp. DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analyses confirmed the presence of R. rickettsii and R. rhipicephali in R. sanguineus (s.l.) in these ticks. Conclusions This study confirms the presence of R. rickettsii and R. rhipicephali in R. sanguineus (s.l.) from stray dogs in the south of Coahuila. This suggests that stray dogs may play a role in the inter-municipal dissemination of infected ticks in this region. Further research is required to assess whether ticks from stray dogs could serve as good indicators for the molecular xenomonitoring of R. rickettsii in this region. Considering that R. sanguineus (s.l.) is a proven vector of R. rickettsii in Mexico, increased awareness regarding permanent tick control in dogs is warranted.

We present findings of our preliminary study to determine biometry and blood chemistry values of healthy wild individuals of the critically endangered Bolson tortoises (Gopherus flavomarginatus) in Mexico. Given the absence of previously published data regarding hematology parameters for this species, these results represent an important base for additional research. Hematocrit determination, stains, and cell counts were performed, as well as 18 parameters of blood chemistry. Values of biometry and blood chemistry for G. flavomarginatus were similar to reference values those already reported for G. agassizii, G. polyphemus, and G. berlandieri. These similarities reflect the phylogenetic relationships among these species. However, slight differences may point to particular adaptations that each has developed to their own habitat, and so point to questions to be addressed with future research.

Abstract

El presente estudio se realizó con el objetivo de desarrollar un programa de muestreo para el pulgón amarillo Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner 1897). Esta plaga se ha convertido en la de mayor importancia económica en el cultivo de sorgo en México y otros países. Se consideraron 10 predios de sorgo en una región del Norte de México conocida como Comarca Lagunera que abarcaron cinco municipios de Coahuila y cinco municipios del Estado de Durango. El método propuesto fue en forma directa inspeccionando el envés de la hoja para contabilizar el número de pulgones. Se determinaron las relaciones varianza-media para el número de individuos contabilizados del pulgón amarillo del sorgo mediante el modelo de la Ley de Poder de Taylor y estimando los tamaños de muestra óptimos. A través del Análisis de Varianza se determinó que para el muestreo del pulgón amarillo del sorgo se debería inspeccionar al menos 39 hojas por predio considerando plantas seleccionadas al azar. De acuerdo a los resultados esto arroja una precisión del 80%. Se encontró una relación significativa entre la proporción o porcentaje de hojas infestadas y el promedio de pulgones por hoja. Con base en las ecuaciones de regresión lineal obtenidas, se puede estimar de manera práctica y concisa la densidad de la plaga con un muestreo binomial de presencia-ausencia registrando el porcentaje de hojas infestadas. Se encontró como promedios máximos por hoja desde 394.66 hasta 719.18 pulgones amarillos del sorgo

Abstract

The Mexican wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) was once distributed in southern United States and northern Mexico. It is an endangered subspecies detached from the gray wolf, and likely exemplifies one of the original migration waves of C. lupus into the new world. This is a canine whose individuals survive in specialized facilities, zoos, and museums as part of captive-breeding programs. In order to contribute to the improvement of the management of this species and favor its long-term conservation in Mexico, we aimed to evaluate the diversity and abundance of the fecal bacterial microbiota in two populations exposed to different types of diet: (1) Michilia (23° N, 104° W); kibble daily and raw meat sporadically, and (2) Ocotal (19° N, 99° W); raw meat daily and live animals periodically. Next generation sequencing (V3-V4 16S rRNA gene) by Illumina was implemented. The operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in Michilia resulted in 9 phyla, 19 classes, 34 orders, 61 families, 204 genera, and 316 species, while in Ocotal there were 12 phyla, 24 classes, 37 orders, 69 families, 232 genera, and 379 species. Higher estimated Chao1 richness, Shannon diversity, and core microbiota were observed in Ocotal. Differences (p < 0.05) between populations occurred according to the Bray–Curtis beta diversity index. In the Michilia, dominance of bacteria that degrade carbohydrates (Firmicutes, Lachnospiraceae, Blautia, Clostrodium, Eisenbergiella, Romboutsia, and Ruminococcus) was observed; they are abundant in kibble diets. In contrast, the Ocotal microbiota was dominated by protein-degrading bacteria (Fusobacteria, Fusobacteriaceae, and Fusobacteria), indicating a possible positive relation with a raw meat diet. The information generated in this study is fundamental to support the implementation of better management plans in the two populations considered here, as well as in different facilities of southern United States and Mexico, where this subspecies is kept in captivity for conservation purposes.

Abstract

In this work, a low-cost and rapid electrochemical resistive DNA biosensor based on the current relaxation method is described. A DNA probe, complementary to the specific human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) sequence, was immobilized onto a screen-printed gold electrode. DNA hybridization was detected by applying a potential step of 30 mV to the system, composed of an external capacitor and the modified electrode DNA/gold, for 750 µs and then relaxed back to the OCP, at which point the voltage and current discharging curves are registered for 25 ms. From the discharging curves, the potential and current relaxation were evaluated, and by using Ohm’s law, the charge transfer resistance through the DNA-modified electrode was calculated. The presence of a complementary sequence was detected by the change in resistance when the ssDNA is transformed in dsDNA due to the hybridization event. The target DNA concentration was detected in the range of 5 to 20 nM. The results showed a good fit to the regression equation ΔRtotal(Ω)=2.99 × [DNA]+81.55, and a detection limit of 2.39 nM was obtained. As the sensing approach uses a direct current, the electronic architecture of the biosensor is simple and allows for the separation of faradic and nonfaradaic contributions. The simple electrochemical resistive biosensor reported here is a good candidate for the point-of-care diagnosis of HPV at a low cost and in a short detection time.

Abstract

The general bacterial microbiota of the soft tick Ornithodoros turicata found on Bolson tortoises (Gopherus flavomarginatus) were analyzed using next generation sequencing. The main aims of the study were to establish the relative abundance of bacterial taxa in the tick, and to document the presence of potentially pathogenic species for this tortoise, other animals, and humans. The study was carried-out in the Mapimi Biosphere Reserve in the northern-arid part of Mexico. Bolson tortoises (n = 45) were inspected for the presence of soft ticks, from which 11 tortoises (24.4%) had ticks in low loads (1–3 ticks per individual). Tick pools (five adult ticks each) were analyzed through 16S rRNA V3–V4 region amplification in a MiSeq Illumina, using EzBioCloud as a taxonomical reference. The operational taxonomic units (OTUs) revealed 28 phyla, 84 classes, 165 orders, 342 families, 1013 genera, and 1326 species. The high number of taxa registered for O. turicata may be the result of the variety of hosts that this tick parasitizes as they live inside G. flavomarginatus burrows. While the most abundant phyla were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes, the most abundant species were two endosymbionts of ticks (Midichloria-like and Coxiella-like). Two bacteria documented as pathogenic to Gopherus spp. were registered (Mycoplasma spp. and Pasteurella testudinis). The bovine and ovine tick-borne pathogens A. marginale and A. ovis, respectively, were recorded, as well as the zoonotic bacteria A. phagocytophilum,Coxiella burnetii, and Neoehrlichia sp. Tortoises parasitized with O. turicata did not show evident signs of disease, which could indicate a possible ecological role as a reservoir that has yet to be demonstrated. In fact, the defense mechanisms of this tortoise against the microorganisms transmitted by ticks during their feeding process are still unknown. Future studies on soft ticks should expand our knowledge about what components of the microbiota are notable across multiple host–microbe dynamics. Likewise, studies are required to better understand the host competence of this tortoise, considered the largest terrestrial reptile in North America distributed throughout the Chihuahuan Desert since the late Pleistocene.

Cardiovascular diseases are a health problem throughout the world, especially in people with diabetes. The identification of cardiovascular disease biomarkers can improve risk stratification. Sclerostin is a modulator of the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway in different tissues, and it has recently been linked to vascular biology. The current study aimed to evaluate the relationship between circulating sclerostin levels and cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality in individuals with and without type 2 diabetes. We followed up a cohort of 130 participants (mean age 56.8 years; 48.5% females; 75 with type 2 diabetes; 46 with prevalent cardiovascular disease) in which serum sclerostin levels were measured at the baseline. Abstract

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma comprises a heterogeneous group of haematological malignancies, classified according to their clinic, anatomic-pathological features and, lately, to their molecular biomarkers. Despite the therapeutic advances, nearly half of the patients will die because of this disease. The new diagnostic tools have been the cornerstone to design recent therapy targets, which must be included in the current treatment guidelines of this sort of neoplasms by means of clinical trials and evidence-based medicine. In the face of poor diagnoses devices in most of the Mexican hospitals, we recommend the present diagnose stratification, and treatment guidelines for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, based on evidence. They include the latest and most innovative therapeutic approaches, as well as specific recommendations for hospitals with limited framework and therapy resources.
