Contaminated sediments are ubiquitous repositories of pollutants and cause substantial environmental risks. Results of sediment bioassays remain difficult to interpret, however, as observed effects may be caused by a variety of (un)known stressors. This study aimed therefore to isolate the effects of hydrophobic organic contaminants from other (non)chemical stressors present in contaminated sediments, by employing a newly developed passive sampling-passive dosing (PSPD) test. The results showed that equilibrium partitioning between pesticides or polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated sediments and a silicone rubber (SR) passive sampler was achieved after 1-3 days. Chlorpyrifos concentrations in pore water of spiked sediment matched very well with concentrations released from the SR into an aqueous test medium, showing that SR can serve as a passive dosing device. Subjecting the 96 h PSPD laboratory bioassay with nonbiting midge (Chironomus riparius) larvae to field-collected sediments showed that at two locations, concentrations of the hydrophobic organic contaminant mixtures were high enough to affect the test organisms. In conclusion, the developed PSPD test was able to isolate the effects of hydrophobic organic contaminants and provides a promising simplified building block for a suite of PSPD tests that after further validation could be used to unravel the contribution of hydrophobic organic chemicals to sediment ecotoxicity.

Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss(1). Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity(2). Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity.

Most of the stream valleys in the Netherlands have multifunctional uses. The impact of climate change and hydromorphological modifications to stream valleys can lead to water management problems. Well-known problems are flooding and droughts. This study explores the potential of stream valleys in the Netherlands to act as climate buffers to mitigate negative effects such as periodically high discharges or stream drying, focusing on solving wate rmanagement problems through restoring natural ecohydrological stream valley processes. We investigated whether a spatial analysis could provide a better insight into the occurrence of water management problems and intopotential solutions to these issues. The potential for water retention, infiltration and preventing runoff wereexplored. The Dutch stream valleys were spatially defined and compared according to their (geo)morphological, hydrological and ecohydrological features. An approach has been developed based on existing spatial data to explore where water management issues might arise and provides solutions in terms of measures. This results in maps depicting spatially which areas in stream valleys are potentially suitable to act as climate buffers to support water management and policy making.This report contributes to the research questions from the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency about th epotential for combining water management objectives in agricultural and urban areas with nature restoration and climate adaptation projects in stream valleys., In beekdalen komen veel gebruiksfuncties samen. Een op deze gebruiksfuncties aangepaste inrichting van het beekdal in combinatie met klimaatverandering leidt tot verschillende wateropgaven. Bekende wateropgaven zijn wateroverlast in bebouwde gebieden en waterschaarste in droge perioden tegengaan. Deze studie verkent de potentie van beekdalen op hogere zandgronden om als klimaatbuffer te kunnen fungeren. Een klimaatbuffer zou wateropgaven die ontstaan als gevolg van afvoerpieken of droogteperioden op kunnen vangen. De focus ligt hierbij op het aanpakken van wateropgaven via herstel van natuurlijke ecohydrologische beekdalprocessen. Onderzocht is of een ruimtelijke verkenning inzicht kan geven in knelpunten en oplossingen voor wateropgaven. Met behulp van ruimtelijke analyses zijn de potenties voor het inzetten van beekdalen als klimaatbuffer verkend. Beekdalen zijn ruimtelijk gedefinieerd en met elkaar vergeleken op (geo)morfologische, hydrologische en ecohydrologische kenmerken. Er is een toepassing ontwikkeld om op basis van bestaand kaartmateriaal potentiële wateropgaven in beekdalen te verkennen. De toepassing is inzetbaar voor het maken van ruimtelijke kansenkaarten ter ondersteuning van beleidsverkenningen. Hiermee draagt het rapport bij aan kennisvragen van het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving over de potentie van het combineren van wateropgaven uit landbouw en stedelijke gebieden met natuurherstel en klimaatvraagstukken in beekdalen.

New treatment steps are needed to better remove nutrients from WWTP effluents to prevent further eutrophication of the receiving waterbodies. Algae can be used to remove nutrients from effluent, but the subsequent removal of the algae biomass remains a challenge. Employing the high filtration capacity of dreissenid mussels may offer an efficient tool to remove effluent grown algae. The aim of the present study was therefore to evaluate if an algae-mussel trophic cascade allows an efficient removal of both nutrients and effluent-cultured algae. To this end, we inoculated WWTP effluent with the alga Tetradesmus obliquus in a batch system and monitored algal growth and nutrient concentrations for 11 days. Subsequently, we fed this algal-effluent solution to Dreissena bugensis for 3 days, after which we determined the amount of remaining algae and produced (pseudo)faeces. The algae-mussel set-up was able to remove 99% of P and 99% of N from the initial effluent, and the combination of algae settlement and mussel filtration resulted in a 94% removal of suspended algae after only 24 h. A total of 67% of the algae were consumed by the mussels after 3 days. Most filtered algae were deposited as pseudofaeces. An even higher efficiency may be achieved by selecting algae with a high nutrient removal capacity, but also with a high palatability for the mussels. Nonetheless, this is the first research that shows that an algae-mussel cascade could already offer an efficient solution to reduce nutrient concentrations in WWTP effluent. This may reduce costs, energy consumption and coagulants use at WWTPs, and could offer an alternative for high-tech treatment techniques, which may be more suitable in countries lacking the infrastructure to build these high-tech treatment steps.

Waterkwaliteitsmonitoring wordt normaal gesproken ingezet voor het bepalen van de feitelijke toestand en het volgen van trends, en - in mindere mate - voor het stellen van diagnose (waarom is de kwaliteit zoals die is) en het verkrijgen van inzicht in het effect van genomen maatregelen (maatregel-effectrelaties). In dit rapport - opgesteld in het kader van de Kennisimpuls Waterkwaliteit - worden per monitoringdoel richtlijnen voor een doelgerichtere monitoringopzet. Het biedt een handvat voor het opstellen van nieuwe monitoringprogramma’s en geeft de theoretische achtergronden bij het hoe en waarom.

Dit rapport bevat achtergrondinformatie ten behoeve van het Kennisdocument “Indicatiewaarden van aquatische organismen” (Verdonschot & Verdonschot, 2021), waarbij voornamelijk wordt ingegaan op de relevantie en complexiteit van biotische interacties in aquatische systemen. De indeling van het rapport is als volgt. Eerst worden de vormen van biotische interacties beschreven (Hoofdstuk 2), waarna de rol van deze biotische interacties in gemeenschapsvorming wordt besproken (Hoofdstuk 3). Daarna worden voorbeelden van bekende interacties binnen aquatische ecosystemen beschreven (Hoofdstuk 4), die vervolgens worden gerelateerd aan het herstel van ervan (Hoofdstuk 5).

Herstelmaatregelen in aquatische systemen vinden vaak lokaal en gefaseerd plaats en het type ingrepen verschilt van plek tot plek. De vraag is in hoeverre deze aanpak bijdraagt aan het ecologisch herstel over grotere schaal van deze systemen. Daarom is geprobeerd meer inzicht te krijgen in de effecten van het nemen van meerdere maatregelen die ruimtelijk en in de tijd gespreid zijn binnen een stroomgebied, om daarmee inzicht in grootschaligere ecologische verbeteringen te verkrijgen. Hierbij worden aspecten als het type maatregel, de intensiteit van uitvoering, de omvang van de ingreep (aandeel of invloed in termen van hersteld oppervlak) en de spreiding van de ingrepen over een stroomgebied meegenomen. Om het inzicht over grootschaligere effecten van gespreide lokale maatregelen te krijgen is bij de waterbeheerders een datavraag uitgezet om voor dit doel geschikte situaties, in het vervolg casussen genaamd, te verzamelen. Een casus is een stroomgebied waarbinnen veel (20-30) meetlocaties verspreid over het gebied liggen en waarvan data beschikbaar is over minimaal de laatste 10-12 jaar. De verkenning richtte zich op macrofauna. Ondanks dat er veel meetgegevens beschikbaar waren in de vorm van losse meetpunten verspreid over de tijd (jaren), was de voor het onderzoek vereiste frequentie en verdeling van de metingen over waterlichamen in de meeste gevallen onvoldoende om een effectanalyse op de schaal van een (deel)stroomgebied of (deel)waterbeheereenheid uit te voeren. Voor vier stroomgebieden bleek voor macrofauna wel voldoende datadekking in ruimte en tijd beschikbaar te zijn. Dit betrof in alle gevallen het watertype beken; de stroomgebieden van de Vlootbeek, Groote Molenbeek, Tungelroyse beek (alle drie waterschap Limburg) en de Tongelreep (waterschap de Dommel). Voor de analyse is de oorspronkelijke macrofaunadata taxonomisch afgestemd. Om een idee te krijgen van de mate aan wetenschappelijke onderbouwing achter geïmplementeerde herstelmaatregelen voor oppervlaktewateren in Nederland,zijn bestaande maatregel-effect rapporten uit de periode 2006-2019 geëvalueerd. Deze evaluatie maakt duidelijk dat we maar een beperkt inzicht hebben in dedaadwerkelijke effectiviteit van maatregelen. Een belangrijke oorzaak hiervoor is het ontbreken van studies waarin maatregellocaties voldoende worden vergelekenmet hun aanvankelijke toestand (voor ingreep) en/of controlelocaties, en het beperkte gebruik van noodzakelijke statistische analyses. Alleen wanneer in maat-regel-effectstudies een wetenschappelijk onderbouwde onderzoeksopzet en data-analyse wordt uitgevoerd en gerapporteerd kunnen we uitspraken doen over dedaadwerkelijke mate van effectiviteit van maatregelen. Tot op heden ontbreekt het hier aan. Deze kennis dient daarom verder te worden ontwikkeld en toegepastom de ecologische toestand in onze oppervlaktewateren effectiever te kunnen verbeteren.

Eén van de doelen van de Kennisimpuls waterkwaliteit (KIWK) is het verder ontwikkelen en toepasbaar maken van een instrumentarium voor het uitvoeren van ecologische stress analyses. Eerder is hiervoor de SESA-methodiek (Systeemgerichte ecologische stressanalyse) ontwikkeld en toegepast op de laaglandbeken. In dit rapport is het concept voor de ontwikkeling van de Systeemgerichte Ecologische Stressanalyse (SESA) voor sloten en kleine kanalen uitgewerkt. Bij deze ontwikkeling is een begeleidingsgroep van waterbeheerders uit laag Nederland betrokken geweest en zijn het Wormer en Jisperveld (Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier) en de polder Zuid-Bijlmer (Waternet) als model poldersystemen gebruikt om de conceptuele ontwikkeling op te baseren. SESA is een methode om op basis van de huidige toestand van een oppervlaktewater en de herstelpotentie knelpunten binnen een hydrologische eenheid of polder in kaart te brengen en te kwantificeren. Hieraan wordt vervolgens een streeftoestand gekoppeld en worden maatregelpakketten voorgesteld die nodig zijn om deze toestand te bereiken. Door oorzaken te zoeken op de schaal van de polder en deze te bekijken over een langere tijdschaal wordt de werking van het systeem en de bronnen van verstoring in beeld gebracht. Dit geeft een beter inzicht in waar de oorzaken van de problemen in de sloten en kleine kanalen te vinden zijn. Dit maakt het ingrijpen met maatregelen veel effectiever en maakt het daarnaast mogelijk gedifferentieerder te werk te gaan bij het herstellen van een poldersysteem. Tenslotte kunnen ook verschillende maatregelpakketten worden doorgerekend (scenario-analyses) en op hun effecten worden vergeleken. Dit document beschrijft verschillende ontwikkelstappen in de parameterisering, structuur en werking van de SESA wat betreft: 1) De afbakening en werking van de polder (het macrosysteem), 2) De groepen van stressoren, 3) De wijze van berekenen, bijvoorbeeld wat betreft de keuze van stressoren en stressorklassen, 4)

The fate of sediment associated compounds is the combined result of chemical properties and biological activities. Yet, studies simultaneously addressing the effects of biota on the redistribution and bioaccumulation of contaminants are scarce. Our aim was therefore to assess the effect of benthic invertebrate activities on organic matter degradation and the redistribution of metals and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated sediment. To this end, we introduced egg ropes of the non-biting midge Chironomus riparius into wastewater treatment plant sludge and allowed these to either develop until fourth instar larvae or to fully complete their life cycle into terrestrial flying adults. Chironomid larvae enhanced sludge degradation, resulting in increased metal concentrations in the sludge and in a flux of metals into the overlying water. Moreover, they hampered PAH degradation in the sludge. Contaminant transport from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems with emerging invertebrates as a vector is widely acknowledged, but here we showed that biomanipulation prevailed over bioaccumulation, since due to chironomid activity, the flux of metals from the sludge into the overlying water was larger than into chironomid biomass. It is therefore concluded that contaminant-macroinvertebrate interactions are bilateral relationships driven by the interplay between macroinvertebrate traits and contaminant properties.

ARK-Natuurontwikkeling heeft het inrichtings- en beheerplan Savendonk opgesteld. De hiertoe beoogde maatregelen, zoals het verwijderen of onklaar maken van drainage, het verondiepen of dempen van watergangen en het plaatsen van een stuw zullen leiden tot de beoogde vernatting c.q. de doelen van het beleid m.b.t. de Natte Natuurparel. Door de vernatting wordt een potentiële toename van steekmuggen nabij woningen door omwonenden als reëel risico gezien. Daarom heeft ARK-NatuurontwikkelingAquaScape gevraagd om een QuickScan risico-analyse van de kans op het optreden van overlast door steekmuggen op de toekomstige vernatte situatie in en rond Savendonk op te stellen en het geven van advies over het voorkomen daarvan. De QuickScan risico-analyse van de toekomstige situatie in en rond Savendonk op overlast door steekmuggen is uitgevoerd door gebruik te maken van kennis van steekmuggen, kaarteninformatie en aanvullende gedocumenteerde informatie. Op basis van deze informatie zijn potentiële overlast geven de situaties geduid en zijn afgeleid over aanvullende inrichtings- en beheermaatregelen die ingepast zouden kunnen worden om mogelijke overlast door stekende insecten te beperken benoemd.Omdat Savendonk een klein onderdeel is van het veel grotere gebied De Geelders wat bekend staat als het steekmuggengebied van Brabant, is van belang deze omgeving in de analyse te betrekken. Hoeveel overlast de omgeving ervaart en of naast een voorjaarsoverlast er ook in de zomer situaties met overlast optreedt voor direct omwonenden is onbekend maar wel belangrijk om te weten. Gezien het verschil in oppervlak tussen Savendonk en De Geelders als totaal is het een belangrijke vraag of Savendonk invloed op de huidige aantallen steekmuggen gaat uitoefenen.De risico-analyse levert het inzicht dat door de maatregelen aangelegde, ontwikkelende en doeltypen van vegetatie en watertypen ontstaan. Biological invasions by nonindigenous species can have negative effects on economies and ecosystems. To limit this impact, current research on biological invasions uses functional traits to facilitate a mechanistic understanding of theoretical and applied questions. Here we aimed to assess the role of functional traits in the progression of crayfish species through different stages of invasion and determine the traits associated with invasive success. A dataset of thirteen functional traits of 15 species currently occurring or available for sale in the Netherlands was evaluated. Six of these crayfish appeared invasive. Important traits distinguishing successful from unsuccessful invaders were a temperate climate in the native range, a medium to high egg count and producing more than one egg clutch per year. The most successful invaders had different functional trait combinations: Procambarus clarkii has a higher reproductive output, can migrate over longer distances and possesses a higher aggression level; Faxonius limosus is adapted to a colder climate, can reproduce parthenogetically and has broader environmental tolerances. Using a suit of functional traits to analyse invasive potential can help risk management and prevention. For example, based on our data Procambarus virginalis is predicted to become the next successful invasive crayfish in the Netherlands.

Determining the resistance and resilience of resources and benthic invertebrates connected to instream refuges and species re-colonization in post-flood periods may help to elucidate mechanisms behind community recovery. This experiment simulated flow pulses in a small temporary stream in an extremely wet year, using upstream control and downstream flooded reaches at three sites in order to assess community resistance and resilience (benthos and drift), and analyse resources (periphyton and benthic organic matter) and invertebrates at pre- and post-flood time periods. The hyporheos was sampled in order to explore species exchanges with benthos. Fewer resources and benthic invertebrates at the beginning of the experiment were found than in previous studies when base flow conditions prevailed. Resource stocks and benthic invertebrates showed high resistance to the flow pulse. Interestingly, there was low resilience of benthic organic matter to natural seasonal flooding. Chlorophyll a did not recover after experimental floods; instead, it was reduced after floods, despite the more benign flow conditions and non-limiting irradiance levels, pointing to top-down control by consumers. Additionally, the experimental flood significantly disturbed only the invertebrate composition in the groundwater-fed stream, which was inhabited by the fewest adapted-to-flood-disturbances macroinvertebrates. Despite the low resilience observed, richness and densities of benthos increased during the study, evidencing progressive colonization. Around 50–60% of macroinvertebrates were present in both benthos and hyporheos. Richness increased after flooding, suggesting that the hyporheic zone could be the main source of colonizers. Three species traits characterized the hyporheos: small size, cocoons and feeders of microorganisms within the fine sediment matrix. This study aimed to distinguish the contribution of stream fragmentation and poor habitat and water quality to the decline in riverine fish species. The species presence was related to the number of barriers between a specific lowland stream section and the main river and to the length of the stream section remaining between two barriers. To investigate the relationship between the absence of fish species and poor ecological water quality, the EQR and stream velocity indices were compared between accessible sites where the fish was either present or absent. 79% of the 1039 km lowland stream length was disconnected from the river Meuse by one or more barriers and 34% by more than 5 barriers, while 28% of all stream sections were shorter than 2.5 km. Only 2% of sites scored a very good water quality, while all study sites were characterized by (very) slow flowing waters (<0.15 m/s). As many fish passages are built to improve connectivity, fish passages do not improve habitat quality. Gudgeon and stone loach were hardly affected by stream fragmentation, and only slightly by too short stream sections. Ide was moderately affected, while the migratory species chub and dace were severely affected by stream fragmentation. Chub and dace were also sensitive to poor habitat and water quality. Distinguishing the effects of stream fragmentation, habitat deterioration, and poor water quality on lowland stream fish distribution increased the understanding of the reasons for the presence and absence of species and may aid effective management and restoration efforts.

Aquatic ecosystems worldwide are impacted by an influx of nutrients and sludge particles from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, leading to a degradation of benthic habitats and a loss of associated macroinvertebrate taxa. Hence, in habitats impacted by WWTPs, only a few tolerant macroinvertebrate taxa remain. These tolerant detritivore macroinvertebrate taxa play an important role in the degradation of organic matter, and biotic interactions between these taxa may either enhance or reduce the rate of sludge degradation. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine if the interaction between asellids and tubificids, both highly abundant in systems impacted by WWTP effluent, enhances the degradation of sludge. To this end, growth and reproduction of both taxa, sludge degradation and nutrient concentrations in the overlying water were measured in a 28-day laboratory experiment, subjecting WWTP sludge to 4 treatments: a control without macroinvertebrates, a tubificid, an asellid, and an asellid + tubificid treatment. Sludge degradation, phosphate concentration in the overlying water and asellid reproduction were enhanced when asellids and tubificids were jointly present, whereas tubificid growth and reproduction were hampered in comparison to the tubificid treatment. Hence, our results suggest that the biotic interactions between these tolerant detritivores stimulate sludge degradation, and thus possibly mitigating the negative impacts of WWTP-derived sludge particles on the benthic environment.

Changes in the ecological stoichiometry of primary producers may have considerable implications for energy and matter transfer in food webs. We hypothesized that nutrient enrichment shifts the trophic position of omnivores towards herbivory, as the nutritional quality of primary producers increases. This hypothesis was tested by analyzing the ecological stoichiometry and stable isotope signature of primary producers and a wide range of aquatic macroinvertebrates, including primary consumers (herbivores) and secondary consumers (both potential omnivores and strict carnivores), along a eutrophication gradient in an agricultural landscape. Our results showed (1) that carbon : nutrient ratios of primary producers decreased along the eutrophication gradient, while the elemental composition of consumers remained homeostatic, and (2) that the trophic position of several omnivores and the generalist predator Notonecta decreased, while the trophic position of most other consumers remained constant. These findings suggest that shifts in the diets of aquatic invertebrates induced by increasing eutrophication may affect species interactions and food web structure in aquatic ecosystems.

Cold-water coral reefs and sponge grounds are deep-sea biological hotspots, equivalent to shallow-water tropical coral reefs. In tropical ecosystems, biodiversity and productivity are maintained through efficient recycling pathways, such as the sponge loop. In this pathway, encrusting sponges recycle dissolved organic matter (DOM) into particulate detritus. Subsequently, the sponge-produced detritus serves as a food source for other organisms on the reef. Alternatively, the DOM stored in massive sponges was recently hypothesized to be transferred to higher trophic levels through predation of these sponges, instead of detritus production. However, for deep-sea sponges, the existence of all prerequisite, consecutive steps of the sponge loop have not yet been established. Here, we tested whether cold-water deep-sea sponges, similar to their tropical shallow-water counterparts, take up DOM and transfer assimilated DOM to associated fauna via either detritus production or predation. We traced the fate of 13carbon (C)- and 15nitrogen (N)-enriched DOM and particulate organic matter (POM) in time using a pulse-chase approach. During the 24-h pulse, the uptake of 13C/15N-enriched DOM and POM by two deep-sea sponge species, the massive species Geodia barretti and the encrusting species Hymedesmia sp., was assessed. During the subsequent 9-day chase in label-free seawater, we investigated the transfer of the consumed food by sponges into brittle stars via two possible scenarios: (1) the production and subsequent consumption of detrital waste or (2) direct feeding on sponge tissue. We found that particulate detritus released by both sponge species contained C from the previously consumed tracer DOM and POM, and, after 9-day exposure to the labeled sponges and detritus, enrichment of 13C and 15N was also detected in the tissue of the brittle stars. These results therefore provide the first evidence of all consecutive steps of a sponge loop pathway via deep-sea sponges. We cannot

Due to high waste sludge disposal at wastewater treatment plants and increasing phosphorus scarcity, there is a need to combine waste removal and nutrient recovery. One way to achieve this is by incorporating ecological processes into wastewater treatment. Positive species interactions, such as facilitation, are critical to increase productivity of biomass and nutrient recovery. In this study we showed the potential of using ecological principles including interspecific facilitation processes of aquatic plants (Azolla filiculoides) and worms (Oligochaeta, Tubificidae) in waste recovery and biomass production. This was investigated by developing a biocascade with monocultures of plants and aquatic worms that was fed on activated sludge. Tubificidae had an average relative growth rate of 0.02 g g−1 DW d−1 whereby sludge predation resulted in 45% sludge reduction. When Tubificidae were present in the biocascade, A. filiculoides biomass production significantly increased to a relative growth rate of 0.15 g g−1 DW d−1. The activity of Tubificidae mostly affected total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand and ammonium concentration in the first compartment of the biocascade. Additionally, nitrification rates increased and the water acidified, leading to increased carbon dioxide concentrations and dissolved phosphorus-binding metals (zinc, iron, aluminium and manganese) that stimulated A. filiculoides growth. The high sludge reduction (45%) and phosphorus sequestration (133 mmol m−3 d−1) show a strong potential of the biocascade for combined sludge waste reduction and phosphorus recovery from wastewater.

Om de ecologische effecten van droogte te kunnen inschatten is het belangrijk onderscheid te maken tussen een zich in de tijd herhalend proces met een zekere seizoensgebonden voorspelbaarheid (‘seasonal drought’) en meer extreme droogte die veel onregelmatiger optreedt en daardoor sterk verstorend werkt op het ecosysteem (‘supra-seasonal drought’; Lake, 2003). Ook werken de effecten van dit laatste type droogte meerdere jaren door. Het eerste type droogval komt van nature voor in droogvallende bronnen en langzaam stromende bovenlopen, greppels en regenwater- of ondiep grondwater-gevoede poelen en vennen. Het tweede type treft juist normaal gesproken permanente wateren (laaglandbeken, permanente bronnen, vennen, oude armen, broekbossen, zeggenmoerassen en sloten). Voorbeelden van extreme droogtejaren in Nederland zijn bijvoorbeeld 1976 (Van Dam & Van Apeldoorn, 1978) en recenter 2018-2019 (Verdonschot et al., 2020). Deze factsheet richt zich primair op het tweede type droogval en (vooral) op de stromende wateren.

Factsheet habitatheterogeniteit. Wanneer geen andere limiterende stressoren aanwezig zijn, leidt een hogere habitatheterogeniteit tot een hogere diversiteit door de aanwezigheid van meer voedsel-, rust- en schuilplaatsen. Maatregelen om de habitatheterogeniteit te vergroten zijn het meest effectief als ze gericht zijn op het grootschalig herstel van ecologische processen, omdat daarmee de achterliggende oorzaak wordt aangepakt en de structuren op natuurlijke wijze worden gehandhaafd. Voor het behoud van habitatstructuren is het belangrijk om het onderhoud van waterlichamen tot een minimum te beperken. Maaibeheer kan het best in ruimte en tijd worden gespreid zodat een variatie in ontwikkelingsstadia kan optreden.

Het doel van de metingen aan stekende insecten in en rondom Leegveld is: a. Het vaststellen van de nulsituatie t.a.v. aantallen en verspreiding van volwassen steekmuggen en knutten. b. Het adviseren over, indien nodig/relevant, kleine aanpassingen in de inrichting en/of aanvullende inrichtings- en beheermaatregelen om mogelijk overlast door stekende insecten te beperken. c. Het vastleggen van de resultaten in de vorm van een notitie en die dienen als basis voor voorlichting aan de begeleidingsgroep en presentatie t.b.v. betrokken omwonenden.

Menselijk activiteiten zoals veranderd landgebruik, het verlagen van de grondwaterpeilen, het omkeren van de oppervlaktewaterpeilen, het verstuwen van stromende wateren, het toevoeren van of doorspoelen met gebiedsvreemd water en het versneld afvoeren van water hebben de natuurlijke waterhuishouding overal sterk veranderd (Poff et al., 1997). Ook klimaatverandering met steeds nattere winters, drogere zomers en intensievere regenbuien in de zomer draagt bij aan een grotere dynamiek in de natuurlijke waterhuishouding. Stromende en stilstaande wateren wijken hydrologisch gezien steeds verder af van de oorspronkelijke toestand en worden hierdoor steeds verder verstoord (Lake, 2000). De laatste 50 jaar zijn de van nature stromende wateren in Nederland steeds meer op stilstaande wateren gaan lijken. Om de ecologische effecten van verstoorde waterbeweging te bepalen moet onderscheid worden gemaakt tussen waterbeweging in stilstaande wateren en stroming in stromende wateren.

Het doel van het project is het terugdringen van de steekmuggenoverlast in Griendtsveen door: - Het in het maatregelenpakket van LIFE+ in de Mariapeel opnemen van een aangepast peilbeheer om de ontwikkeling van langdurig tijdelijke wateren tegen te gaan en de isolatie van langdurig tijdelijke wateren op te heffen. Hiervoor dienen de langdurig tijdelijke wateren die functioneren als broedplaats voor moerassteekmuggen te worden gekarteerd en dient de gebiedshydrologie en –morfologie te worden vastgelegd om doelgerichte maatregelen te kunnen formuleren. - Het instellen van een monitoringsmeetnet om de overlast van stekende insecten in en rondom het dorp Griendtsveen te kunnen volgen in de tijd. - Eventueel de verbindingszones waarlangs moerassteekmuggen zouden kunnen migreren van het natuurgebied naar het dorp zo in te richten dat deze dienen als barrières voor stekende insecten.

A major challenge in water quality assessment is to identify suitable indicators to monitor and assess the effects of anthropogenic stressors on the ecological status of freshwater ecosystems. Passive acoustic monitoring is a novel approach that could potentially be used to detect invertebrate species and ecological processes such as dissolved oxygen dynamics in freshwater environments. The aim of the present study was to evaluate to what extent sounds can be used for water quality assessment. We performed a field study to relate acoustic indices to the intensity of several stressors, the invertebrate community composition and the dissolved oxygen dynamics in 20 temperate lowland streams and drainage ditches impacted to a varying degree by agricultural activities and discharges from waste water treatment plants. Our results showed that the recorded acoustic patterns were primarily associated with the fluctuation in dissolved oxygen saturation, while specific frequency bands could be related to the sound-producing invertebrate community. We observed that acoustic indices do not allow to detect the adverse effects of anthropogenic stressors on the invertebrate community composition, presumably due to the prevalence of Heteroptera which are relatively insensitive to stressors, but make a lot of sounds. A strong relation between acoustic indices and oxygen fluctuation indicate that passive acoustic monitoring may be used to estimate metabolism in water bodies. We suggest that the next step in freshwater ecoacoustics will be to precisely characterise each source of sound emitted during the processes of primary production, respiration and re-aeration, in order to distinguish these parameters. This may overcome some of the challenges encountered in the estimation of metabolism from diel dissolved oxygen curves.

The appeal of trait-based approaches for assessing environmental vulnerabilities arises from the potential insight they provide into the mechanisms underlying the changes in populations and community structure. Traits can provide ecologically based explanations for observed responses to environmental changes, along with predictive power gained by developing relationships between traits and environmental variables. Despite these potential benefits, questions remain regarding the utility and limitations of these approaches, which we explore focusing on the following questions: (a) How reliable are predictions of biotic responses to changing conditions based on single trait–environment relationships? (b) What factors constrain detection of single trait–environment relationships, and how can they be addressed? (c) Can we use information on meta-community processes to reveal conditions when assumptions underlying trait-based studies are not met? We address these questions by reviewing published literature on aquatic invertebrate communities from stream ecosystems. Our findings help to define factors that influence the successful application of trait-based approaches in addressing the complex, multifaceted effects of changing climate conditions on hydrologic and thermal regimes in stream ecosystems. Key conclusions are that observed relationships between traits and environmental stressors are often inconsistent with predefined hypotheses derived from current trait-based thinking, particularly related to single trait–environment relationships. Factors that can influence findings of trait-based assessments include intercorrelations of among traits and among environmental variables, spatial scale, strength of biotic interactions, intensity of habitat disturbance, degree of abiotic stress, and methods of trait characterization.
