Abstract

Sensitivity and resolution of space telescopes are directly related to the size of the primary mirror. Enabling such future extremely large space telescopes or even arrays of those will require to drastically reduce the areal weight of the mirror system. Utilizing a thin parabolic polymeric membrane as primary mirror offers the prospect of very low weight and the flexible nature of those membranes allows compactly store them upon launch. Upon deployment the structure is unfolded and the mirror shape restored. Being an extremely thin structure, an active shape correction is required. Utilizing a thermal control of the surface via radiative coupling, localized shape changes are imprinted into the membrane telescope. In this paper we present the modelling and experimental test of the radiative adaptive optics. A detailed modeling of the influence function of the radiative shaping onto the membrane mirror has been carried out. Experimentally we have been radiatively actuated the shape of a prototype mirror in closed loop with a wavefront sensor and proven that we can control the mirrors surface figure to a ~15nm RMS precision., Comment: 13 pages

Abstract

Large Fabry-Perot Interferometers are used in a variety of astronomical instrumentation, including spectro-polarimeters for 4-meter class solar telescopes. In this work we comprehensively characterize the cavity of a prototype 150 mm Fabry-Perot interferometer, sporting a novel, fully symmetric design. Of note, we define a new method to properly assess the gravity effects on the interferometer's cavity when the system is used in either the vertical or horizontal configuration, both typical of solar observations. We show that the symmetric design very effectively limits the combined effects of pre-load and gravity forces to only a few nm over a 120 mm diameter illuminated surface, with gravity contributing about 2 nm peak-to-valley (0.3 nm rms) in either configuration. We confirm a variation of the tilt between the plates of the interferometer during the spectral scan, which can be mitigated with appropriate corrections to the spacing commands. Finally, we show that the dynamical response of the new system fully satisfies typical operational scenarios. We conclude that large, fully symmetric Fabry-Perot interferometers can be safely used within solar instrumentation in both, horizontal and vertical position, with the latter better suited to limiting the overall volume occupied by such an instrument., Comment: 18 pages; accepted for publication in PASP. Abstract

The first measurement of the temperature dependence of the muon transfer rate from muonic hydrogen to oxygen was performed by the FAMU collaboration in 2016. The results provide evidence that the transfer rate rises with the temperature in the range 104-300 K. This paper presents the results of the experiment done in 2018 to extend the measurements towards lower (70 K) and higher (336 K) temperatures. The 2018 results confirm the temperature dependence of the muon transfer rate observed in 2016 and sets firm ground for comparison with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract

The discovery of almost 2000 exoplanets has revealed an unexpectedly diverse planet population. Observations to date have shown that our Solar System is certainly not representative of the general population of planets in our Milky Way. The key science questions that urgently need addressing are therefore: What are exoplanets made of? Why are planets as they are? What causes the exceptional diversity observed as compared to the Solar System? EChO (Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory) has been designed as a dedicated survey mission for transit and eclipse spectroscopy capable of observing a large and diverse planet sample within its four-year mission lifetime. EChO can target the atmospheres of super-Earths, Neptune-like, and Jupiter-like planets, in the very hot to temperate zones (planet temperatures of 300K-3000K) of F to M-type host stars. Over the next ten years, several new ground- and space-based transit surveys will come on-line (e.g. NGTS, CHEOPS, TESS, PLATO), which will specifically focus on finding bright, nearby systems. The current rapid rate of discovery would allow the target list to be further optimised in the years prior to EChO's launch and enable the atmospheric characterisation of hundreds of planets. Placing the satellite at L2 provides a cold and stable thermal environment, as well as a large field of regard to allow efficient time-critical observation of targets randomly distributed over the sky. A 1m class telescope is sufficiently large to achieve the necessary spectro-photometric precision. The spectral coverage (0.5-11 micron, goal 16 micron) and SNR to be achieved by EChO, thanks to its high stability and dedicated design, would enable a very accurate measurement of the atmospheric composition and structure of hundreds of exoplanets., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures. 14. Mono-, bi- and tri-metallic Fe-based platinum group metal-free electrocatalysts derived from phthalocyanine for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media

Abstract

In this manuscript, a comprehensive study is presented on Fe-based electrocatalysts with mono, bi, and tri-metallic compositions, emphasizing the influence of processing-structure correlations on the electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the alkaline medium. These electrocatalysts were synthesized through the mixing of transition metal phthalocyanines (TM-Pc) with conductive carbon support, followed by controlled thermal treatment at specific temperatures (600 °C and 900 °C). An extensive analysis was conducted, employing various techniques, including X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD), providing valuable insights into the structural characteristics of the synthesized nanoparticles. Importantly, an increase in the Fe-Pc weight percentage from 10% to 30% enhanced the ORR activity, although not proportionally. Furthermore, a comparative analysis between mono, bi, and tri-metallic samples subjected to different functionalization temperatures highlighted the superior electrocatalytic activity of electrocatalysts functionalized at 600 °C, particularly Fe 600 and Fe-Ni-Cu 600. These electrocatalysts featured Eon values of 0.96 V vs. RHE and E1/2 values of 0.9 V vs. RHE, with the added benefit of reduced anionic peroxide production. The potential of these Fe-based electrocatalysts to enhance ORR efficiency is underscored by this research, contributing to the development of more effective and sustainable electrocatalysts for energy conversion technologies.

16. gamma-ray DBSCAN: a clustering algorithm applied to Fermi-LAT gamma-ray data. I. Detection performances with real and simulated data

Abstract

The Density Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) is a topometric algorithm used to cluster spatial data that are affected by background noise. For the first time, we propose the use of this method for the detection of sources in gamma-ray astrophysical images obtained from the Fermi-LAT data, where each point corresponds to the arrival direction of a photon. We investigate the detection performance of the gamma-ray DBSCAN in terms of detection efficiency and rejection of spurious clusters, using a parametric approach, and exploring a large volume of the gamma-ray DBSCAN parameter space. By means of simulated data we statistically characterize the gamma-ray DBSCAN, finding signatures that differentiate purely random fields, from fields with sources. We define a significance level for the detected clusters, and we successfully test this significance with our simulated data. We apply the method to real data, and we find an excellent agreement with the results obtained with simulated data. We find that the gamma-ray DBSCAN can be successfully used in the detection of clusters in gamma-ray data. The significance returned by our algorithm is strongly correlated with that provided by the Maximum Likelihood analysis with standard Fermi-LAT software, and can be used to safely remove spurious clusters. The positional accuracy of the reconstructed cluster centroid compares to that returned by standard Maximum Likelihood analysis, allowing to look for astrophysical counterparts in narrow regions, minimizing the chance probability in the counterpart association. We find that gamma-ray DBSCAN is a powerful tool in the detection of clusters in gamma-ray data, this method can be used both to look for point-like sources, and extended sources, and can be potentially applied to any astrophysical field related with detection of clusters in data., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

Cellular functions are controlled by an extensive regulatory network, within which one can distinguish two principal classes of circuits. One is involved in cellular responses to extracellular cues via membrane receptors facing the extracellular space, while the other consists of internal sensors, controllers and effectors that operate to maintain homeostasis, coordinate different cellular functions, and optimize its overall system’s performance. The former class of receptor signaling circuit has been investigated over the last decades in the context of many cell functions and it is well understood, while the latter has been studied much less extensively, or by comparison, neglected, at least in many areas, despite its fundamental importance in physiology and pathology. This article focuses mainly on the second class of circuits, and, in particular, on the internal control mechanisms operating in the biosynthetic membrane transport (BMT) apparatus, a fundamental cell module with a major role in the cellular organization. The BMT apparatus is responsible for the synthesis, folding, processing and delivery to their final cellular destinations of a third of the eukaryotic proteome. Through these functions, the transport apparatus maintains the correct morphology, composition and function of most cellular organelles by influencing the cell–cell and cell–environment communications. Moreover, the BMT interacts with other cellular modules like energy metabolism and autophagy in the execution of complex programs initiated by surface receptors, such as cell growth, migration and differentiation. We analyze the molecular composition, design principles, coordination with other modules, and significance in physiology and pathology of the control systems operating in the BMT.

Abstract

In this paper, the performance of a new CVD reactor (called PE1O8) designed by LPE and developed in the European project REACTION to process uniform 4H-SiC homoepitaxy on 200 mm substrate is reported. Its tunable multi-zone injection system and new gas delivery configuration ensure the uniform gas distribution throughout the substrate. Excellent thickness and doping uniformity on 200 mm substrates are achieved with run-to-run variation less than 1.4% and 5.6% respectively.

Abstract

In this work, platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) electrocatalysts were synthesized, characterized, and tested for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). These materials were mono-, bi- and trimetallic Ni-based electrocatalysts with the addition of a second or a third transition metal (TM), such as iron and cobalt. TM–phthalocyanine (TMPc) was used as a metal precursor, mixed with a conductive carbon backbone and subjected to pyrolysis under controlled temperature and atmosphere conditions. Two temperatures of pyrolysis (600 °C and 900 °C) were used. The effect of TM loading in the precursors, different pyrolysis temperatures on the surface chemistry and morphology, and electrocatalytic activity towards HER were evaluated. The increase of NiPc in the initial mixture is beneficial to improving the electrocatalytic activity. The addition of a second and a third metal reflects positively on the HER performance. Interestingly, the pyrolysis temperature influences both the formation and growth of the nanoparticles, and this information is supported by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and light synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements.

Abstract

Within the framework of the circular economy, the waste litchi's skins were upgraded and transformed into electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The waste litchi's skins were pyrolyzed, activated, and then used as carbon support for fabricating metal–nitrogen–carbons (M–N–Cs) which belong to a promising class of platinum group metal-free electrocatalysts. The activated char was functionalized with transition metal (Fe, Ni, and Co)- phthalocyanine (Pc) in monometallic and bimetallic fashion by subjecting it to a thermal treatment at 600 and 900°C. The samples functionalized at 900°C showed higher performance for HER due to the formation of metal nanoparticles, whereas the samples functionalized at 600°C showed higher performance for ORR. Particularly, sample Ni–Co 900 had an overpotential of −0.38 V for HER, while the sample Fe 600 was the most active electrocatalyst for ORR by demonstrating the onset potential of ∼0.9 V (a half-wave potential of ∼0.81 V) with the least production of unwanted peroxide anion.

Abstract

Full-scale experimental tests are still needed to enhance knowledge on the seismic response of existing reinforced concrete buildings and to calibrate numerical models aimed at predicting damage. This study deals with pseudo-dynamic (PSD) tests and numerical modeling of full-scale multi-story infilled RC frames with different infill-to-frame connections. Nonlinear numerical models are calibrated using the experimental results at frame level and validated against the results of time-histories in terms of displacement demand, hysteretic response, and attained damage. This model is extended at building level and used to predicted damage to infills. The comparison with damage observed during post-earthquake inspections is reported and discussed. Abstract

Post-earthquake field inspections have outlined the poor seismic performance of non-conforming reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column joints (BCJs) of existing RC buildings. Experimental and analytical studies have demonstrated that the application of externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) is an efficient and cost-effective strengthening technique to improve the seismic performance of deficient BCJs. However, seismic losses for FRP-strengthened BCJs at different damage states (DSs) are currently not quantified. A potential seismic damage assessment tool is critical to obtain reliable estimations of the effects of FRP strengthening on reducing the expected damage and losses in existing buildings. Therefore, experimental-based fragility functions for FRP-strengthened corner and exterior BCJs at different limit states are proposed in this study. Experimental tests on 70 corner and 28 exterior FRP-strengthened BCJs are first collected. Then, DSs with increasing severity (i.e., light, moderate, and heavy) are defined according to widely recognized studies. These DSs are quantified on the basis of inter-story drift ratios (IDRs). After retrofitting, IDR-based fragility functions are generated for strengthened BCJs classified in terms of failure mode and achieved ductility level. The proposed functions are also compared with fragility functions available for non-conforming and conforming joints obtained from the literature. Finally, an application of the proposed fragility functions within a performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) framework for quantifying expected losses (ELs) and the benefits of FRP strengthening of BCJs is showed.

Abstract

No robust evidence is provided by literature regarding the management of intracranial hypertension following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). This is mostly due to the lack of prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the presence of studies containing extreme heterogeneously collected populations and controversial considerations about chosen outcome. A scientific society should provide guidelines for care management and scientific support for those areas for which evidence-based medicine has not been identified. However, RCTs in severe TBI have failed to establish intervention effectiveness, arising the need to make greater use of tools such as Consensus Conferences between experts, which have the advantage of providing recommendations based on experience, on the analysis of updated literature data and on the direct comparison of different logistic realities. The Italian scientific societies should provide guidelines following the national laws ruling the best medical practice. However, many limitations do not allow the collection of data supporting high levels of evidence for intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring and decompressive craniectomy (DC) in patients with severe TBI. This intersociety document proposes best practice guidelines for this subsetting of patients to be adopted on a national Italian level, along with joint statements from "TBI Section" of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (SINch) endorsed by the Neuroanesthesia and Neurocritical Care Study Group of the Italian Society of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SIAARTI). Presented here is a recap of recommendations on management of ICP and DC supported a high level of available evidence and rate of agreement expressed by the assemblies during the more recent consensus conferences, where members of both groups have had a role of active participants and supporters. The listed recommendations have been sent to a panel of experts consisting of the 107 members of the "TBI Section" of the SINch and the 111 members of the Neuroanesthesia and Neurocritical Care Study Group of the SIAARTI. The aim of the survey was to test a preliminary evaluation of the grade of predictable future adherence of the recommendations following this intersociety proposal. The following recommendations are suggested as representing best clinical practice, nevertheless, adoption of local multidisciplinary protocols regarding thresholds of ICP values, drug therapies, hemostasis management and perioperative care of decompressed patients is strongly recommended to improve treatment efficiency, to increase the quality of data collection and to provide more powerful evidence with future studies. Thus, for this future perspective a rapid overview of the role of the multimodal neuromonitoring in the optimal severe TBI management is also provided in this document. It is reasonable to assume that the recommendations reported in this paper will in future be updated by new observations arising from future trials. They are not binding, and this document should be offered as a guidance for clinical practice through an intersociety agreement, taking in consideration the low level of evidence.

Abstract

In direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs), the oxidation of alcohols happens at the expenses of the oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode. DAFCs' cathodes use a significant amount of platinum that is an expensive critical raw material. Moreover, platinum oxidizes alcohols, a fact that combined with alcohol crossover, decreases significantly the performance of the cells. The use of Fe-based (Fe[sbnd]N[sbnd]C) platinum group metal–free (PGM-free) cathodes is a convenient strategy to overcome these limitations. This review analyzes the application of PGM-free cathodes to DAFCs. The discussion focuses on acidic systems and covers the following subjects: (i) the breakdown of DAFC potential in its components, (ii) the analysis of the advantages from the use of the PGM-free cathode, and (iii) a review of the performance and durability of DAFCs. The review closes with a view of the authors of the future perspective for the research.

Abstract

Modern seismic design and the retrofitting of buildings necessarily need to account for expected economic losses. Available refined and simplified procedures implemented in automatic computer tools allow for probabilistic loss assessments. These mostly rely on consequence functions derived by simulating the repair actions needed to restore a component to its pre-earthquake condition. However, due to the lack of data, only a few studies have benchmarked theoretical loss assessments with actual repair costs monitored in the aftermath of earthquake events. This paper analyses the actual repair costs of a database of 120 reinforced concrete residential buildings damaged by the 2009 earthquake in L’Aquila, Italy. The repair cost distributions and the correlation with observed earthquake damage are provided at the building and component levels. The repair costs of drift- and acceleration-sensitive components are also reported. This study outlines that repairing hollow clay brick infills and partitions that are typical of the Mediterranean construction standard constitutes the majority of total repair costs. Reliable consequence functions calibrated on actual cost data are proposed for different damage states.
