Abstract: The bovine horns is an anatomical region that has been poorly studied from an anatomical and physiological point of view. The lidia bull is an iconic animal and its horns a mythological symbol of integrity, to such an extent that farmers resort toapplying synthetic resins covers to preserve it from any manipulation. With the present work it is intended to study the histological structure of the horn of the lidia bull, analyzing the possible influence of the practice of "sheathing" on it. To this end, horns have been collected from 30 bulls (4-5 years old) in bullrings in, with a control group of 15 animals not sheathed. After the analyses, the normal histological structure of the bull's horns is described and the lesions observed in some animals, such as spongiosis in the stratum spinosum, cellular disorganization of the stratum basalis or the presence of multiple neovessels in the dermis, are described. No effect of sheathing is detected at the histological level., La cornamenta de los bovinos es una región anatómica muy poco estudiada desde el punto de vista anatómico y fisiológico. El toro de lidia es un animal icónico y su cornamenta un símbolo mitológico de integridad, hasta tal punto que los ganaderos recurren a la aplicación de fundas de fibra de vidrio para preservarla de cualquier manipulación. Con el presente trabajo se pretende estudiar la estructura histológica del cuerno del toro de lidia, analizando la posible influencia de la práctica de “enfundado” en la misma. Para ello se han recogido cuernos de 30 toros (4-5 años) en plazas de toros, contando con un grupo control de individuos no enfundados de 15 animales. Tras los análisis se describe la estructura histológica del epitelio corneal compuesto por tres capas: estrato córneo, estrato espinoso y estrato basal que continúan con la dermis y se describen las lesiones observadas en ciertos animales tales como espongiosis en el estrato espinoso, desorganización celular del estrato basal o presencia de múltiples neovasos en la dermis. No se detecta ningún efecto del enfundado a nivel histológico

Abstract: [EN] The welfare of an animal depends on its health and on the extent to what its biological needs are met. Biological needs can be roughly divided into two main groups: (1) those related to nutrition and physical and thermal comfort, and (2) those related to mental health and behaviour, including a varied and stimulus-rich environment, a perception of control and agency, and the possibility to engage in highly motivated behaviours. This paper will deal with the importance of this last need for the welfare of farm animals. The term “behavioural need” was defined a few decades ago based on motivational theory. The two main traits that define a behaviour as a “behavioural need” are that (1) its onset depends mainly or solely on internal factors, such as changes in hormone levels, and (2) its motivation only disappears when the animal has performed the behaviour and therefore it is relatively independent of its functional consequences. Several early studies on behavioural needs used the nesting behaviour of sows as an example. As behavioural needs are controlled by internal factors - as opposed to external stimuli-, their motivation is independent of the environment where the animal is kept. Furthermore, animals must perform the behaviour, as otherwise its motivation will remain high. More recently, the concept of “behavioural needs” has been criticized on the grounds that many behaviours that do not fit its definition are still important for welfare, as they contribute to the physical or mental health of animals. In this paper, the term “behavioural need” will be used in a wide sense to refer to all behaviours that, independently of their precise motivation, are important for welfare.

Abstract: Background End-stage renal disease (ESRD) in children is associated with impaired neurocognitive function and development. However, data on factors associated with neurocognitive dysfunctions in children with kidney transplants are limited. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional analysis comparing cognitive functions (using the Woodcock-Johnson International Edition, WJIE) in 35 kidney transplant and 35 healthy control children. Data on laboratory measurements, comorbidities, and social characteristics were collected. Results Transplant children had significantly worse scores on the intelligence quotient (IQ) test compared with controls [Full Scale IQ score 85 (26) vs 107 (10), p 9 months) were associated with lower test scores. En la actualidad, en muchas de las explotaciones se protege el cuerno durante el último año de cría del toro con una funda de fibra de vidrio. Con el presente trabajo se pretende estudiar la estructura interna del cuerno del toro de Lidia, analizando la posible influencia del enfundado en la misma. Para ello se han recogido cuernos de 55 toros (4-5 años), contando con un grupo de individuos enfundados de 25 animales. Se ha recogido información biométrica del cuerno y de la edad del animal. Un cuerno de cada animal ha sido sometido a estudio de imagen mediante radiografía, densitometría y resonancia magnética. El estudio radiológico ofreció gran información sobre la estructura interna del cuerno, siendo un buen método para la valoración de la integridad del mismo. La cornamenta de los animales no enfundados presentó mayores valores de área ósea, contenido y densidad mineral a nivel de la zona ósea distal, lo que revela un efecto nocivo del enfundado. Este podría derivar en una mayor predisposición a una eventual fractura, sin embargo, no se observaron diferencias entre grupos en el estudio realizado mediante resonancia magnética. Abstract: Aim of study: The aim of this work was to study the effect of different length of physical activity carried out by the bull prior to the show during the final performance of the animal, analyzing the behavior and physical activity displayed in the ring.Area of study: There is no clear scientific evidence of physical capacity improvements during the lidia show or “corrida”, in Lidia cattle, as a result of previous training.Material and methods: A total of 233 bulls from eight farms were studied and classified, on each farm, into three groups according to the length of the training period: group 1 (no training), group 2 (training for 3 months prior to the show) and group 3 (training for 6-9 months prior to the show). Locomotion times or percentage of time the animals moved were quantified, and number of falls, their severity and distribution during the show were registered.Main results: Trained animals performed last phase of the “corrida” show with a significantly longer length compared to untrained animals. Furthermore, they remained longer in motion during the initial phase of the “corrida”. However, trained animals experienced more falls of type 1 and 2 during the last phase (“muleta”).Research highlights: A training period of up to 3 months before the show is positive, providing animals a greater physical performance, improving the quality of the lidia show. However, longer training periods over 3 months prior to the show, can negatively affect the performance of these bulls during the “corrida”.

Ante la singularidad de la actuación del caballo en los festejos taurinos y el desconocimiento sobre las características del esfuerzo físico que este realiza, se planteó monitorizar la frecuencia cardiaca (FC) y temperatura del equino durante el día del festejo. Para ello, se registró la FC de 20 caballos de picar que actuaron en la plaza de toros de Valencia durante la feria de Fallas 2019. Se usaron dos pulsómetros convencionales de equino marca Polar G3 adaptándolos a su uso en un caballo de picar, teniendo en cuenta los diversos aparejos con los que se protege el animal. Los dispositivos fueron instalados desde primera hora de la mañana (10:00h) y desinstalados tras el festejo (21:00h). Durante las 11 horas de monitorización se anotaron todos los manejos que sigue el animal y, paralelamente, se tomó la temperatura rectal a primera hora, en el momento del aparejado, en el calentamiento previo a la lidia y tras su actuación en la misma. Los resultados de FC se muestran en diversas gráficas, por caballo, la media total y en tablas la temperatura rectal. Se observan tres momentos de aumento de la FC: el calentamiento, el paseíllo y su actuación en el tercio de varas. Las gráficas obtenidas reflejan una FC normal cuando el caballo está en reposo en su cuadra (36,57 ppm) y una gran elevación correspondiente al momento de la suerte de varas (152,39 ppm) significativamente mayor al incremento de las pulsaciones en el paseíllo (112,46 ppm), pero sin diferencias con la media del tercio de varas del caballo que guarda puerta (139,05 ppm). La FC aumenta especialmente en el momento en el que el picador lleva a cabo el puyazo, donde el caballo llega hasta las 180 ppm, dato muy superior a la FC observada en diferentes trabajos con caballos de salto. La FC del animal que guarda la puerta de chiqueros (139,05 ppm), como era de esperar teniendo en cuenta que, aunque el caballo tiene tapados ojos y oídos, comprende donde está por la distancia que recorre en el ruedo y que tiene delante al toro al recibir su embestida. No encontramos diferencias significativas entre caballos de diferentes cuadras, ni en función de su edad, ni su peso, ni tampoco dependiendo del espectáculo en el que actúe, ya bien novilladas o corridas de toros. En cuanto a la temperatura rectal, se observó un aumento (aproximadamente 1 ºC) tras la actuación de los caballos en la lidia, aspecto ligado al esfuerzo metabólico del caballo tras su actuación sin llevar a cabo grandes desplazamientos ni esfuerzo físico, más bien un esfuerzo “psicológico”.

Abstract: Este artículo a texto completo en formato PDF puede consultarse y descargarse desde el siguiente enlace al índice de la revista: http://www.aida-itea.org/aida-itea/files/itea/revistas/2019/115-4/(376-398)%20ITEA%20115-4.pdf La raza de lidia ha variado su sistema de explotación partiendo de un manejo puramente extensivo hacia un régimen semiintensivo donde los animales se nutren del pasto de la finca ganadera con suplementaciones puntuales, salvo los machos que son sometidos a un cebo previo a la lidia durante su último año productivo. Se detectan dos puntos críticos: una subalimentación del animal durante la etapa de crecimiento y un padecimiento de acidosis ruminal durante la etapa de cebo intensivo del macho. Diversos autores proponen un nuevo manejo alimentario, que adecúa el tipo de concentrado a las necesidades fisiológicas del animal desde el destete y racionaliza los suplementos alimenticios durante toda la vida del toro. A su vez se ofrecen nuevas estrategias que podrían prevenir el padecimiento de acidosis ruminal: incrementar el porcentaje y calidad de fibra en la ración, incorporar carros mezcladores o aumentar la frecuencia de administración del alimento (entre dos y cuatro al día). Igualmente existen diversos tratamientos paliativos como el uso de aditivos químicos y microbianos o el tratamiento con ciertos antimicrobianos. Finalmente, el sector adolece de más estudios que clarifiquen los factores desencadenantes de la acidosis ruminal en el toro de lidia y confirmen las estrategias a seguir para prevenir las patologías secundarias a dicho proceso. The lidia breed has varied its exploitation system from a purely extensive management to a semi-intensive system where the animals feed on the pasture of the cattle farm with specific supplements, except for males, which are subjected to a fattening prior to the show during their last productive year. Two critical points are detected: an underfeeding of the animal during the growth stage and a ruminal acidosis condition during the intensive fattening stage of the male. Several authors propose a new alimentary management, which adapts the type of concentrate to the physiological needs of the animal since weaning and rationalizes the nutritional supplements throughout the life of the bull. At the same time, new strategies are offered that could prevent the suffering of ruminal acidosis: increasing the percentage and quality of fiber in the ration, incorporating mixer carts or increase the frequency of food administration (between two and four times a days). There are also various palliative treatments such as the use of chemical and microbial additives or the treatment with certain antimicrobials. Finally, the sector needs more studies in order to clarify the factors that trigger ruminal acidosis in the fighting bull and confirm the strategies to be followed in order to prevent secondary pathologies to this process.

Making use of the etiological assessment computer software designed by the Department of Animal Production of the University of León, the behavior of 2577 animals aged from 3 to 6 years has been recorded. These animals have been grappled since 1991 to 2016 in different Spanish bullrings of 1st and 2nd category, in order to study the evolution of the selection carried out in the breed during the last 25 years and the influence on the behavior of the improvements implemented in the management of this type of livestock. Interesting results can be obtained that reflect the change in the selection of the fighting bull towards a nobler bull and "tolerable", corresponding to the information that gives us the starting point behavior of the animal and during the third of rods. In turn, there is an increase in physical activity developed by the animal, which leads to longer crutches, with more batches, probably due to improvements in feeding and the implementation of a physical training protocol in most of the farms. La raza bovina de lidia se caracteriza por una selección genética en base a una determinada conducta de comportamiento denominada bravura. Haciendo uso del programa informático de valoración etológica diseñado en el Departamento de Producción Animal de la Universidad de León se ha registrado el comportamiento de 2577 animales de 3 a 6 años lidiados durante los años 1991 a 2016, lidiados en diferentes plazas de toros españolas de 1ª y 2ª categoría para estudiar la evolución de la selección llevada a cabo en la raza durante los últimos 25 años y la influencia en el comportamiento de las mejoras implantadas en el manejo de este tipo de ganado. Se obtienen resultados interesantes que reflejan el cambio en la selección del toro de lidia hacia un toro más noble y “toreable”, correspondientes a la información que nos da el comportamiento de salida del animal y durante el tercio de varas. A su vez, se registra un aumento de la actividad física que desarrolla el animal, que propicia tercios de muleta cada vez más largos, con mayor número de tandas, probablemente debido a las mejoras en alimentación y la implantación de protocolos de entrenamiento físico en la mayoría de las explotaciones.

Abstract: Seminal plasma could have positive effects on boar semen after thawing. In the present study we investigated changes in the motility and chromatin structure in spermatozoa over 4 h incubation (37°C) of boar semen thawed in the presence of 0%, 10% or 50% seminal plasma from good-fertility boars. Cryopreserved doses were used from seven males, three of which were identified as susceptible to post-thawing chromatin alterations. Motility was analysed by computer-aided sperm analysis every hour, and data were used in a two-step clustering, yielding three subpopulations of spermatozoa (slow non-linear, fast non-linear, fast linear). Chromatin structure was analysed using a sperm chromatin structure assay and flow cytometry to determine the DNA fragmentation index (%DFI) as a percentage, the standard deviation of the DFI (SD-DFI) and the percentage of high DNA stainability (%HDS), indicating chromatin compaction. Thawing without seminal plasma resulted in a rapid loss of motility, whereas seminal plasma helped maintain motility throughout the incubation period and preserved the subpopulation comprising fast and linear spermatozoa. The incidence of chromatin alterations was very low in samples from non-susceptible males, whereas samples from males susceptible to post-thawing chromatin alterations exhibited marked alterations in %DFI and %HDS. Seminal plasma partly prevented these alterations in samples from susceptible males. Overall, 50% seminal plasma was the most efficient concentration to protect motility and chromatin. Some changes were concomitant with physiological events reported previously (e.g., semen thawed with 50% seminal plasma increased the production of reactive oxygen species and yielded higher fertility after AI). Thawing in the presence of seminal plasma could be particularly useful in the case of samples susceptible to post-thawing chromatin damage.

Abstract: Los estimulantes espermáticos, conocidos también como potenciadores o aditivos seminales, son un grupo de sustancias, clasificadas en cuatro categorías ( estimulantes de la motilidad espermática, hormonas, enzimas y otras diversas), que añadidas al semen en el momento previo a la inseminación de las hembras mejoran la fertilidad y/o la prolificidad. En el presente artículo expondremos nuestras últimas investigaciones sobre un estimulante espermático porcino (EEP), de tipo "combinado", aplicable a la optimación de los resultados de la inseminación artificial porcina (IAP).
