In order to explore the consequences of spin-orbit coupling on spin-phonon interactions in a set of chemically-similar mixed metal oxides, we measured the infrared vibrational properties of Co$_4B_2$O$_9$ ($B$ = Nb, Ta) as a function of temperature and compared our findings with lattice dynamics calculations and several different models of spin-phonon coupling. Frequency vs. temperature trends for the Co$^{2+}$ shearing mode near 150 cm$^{-1}$ reveal significant shifts across the magnetic ordering temperature that are especially large in relative terms. Bringing these results together and accounting for noncollinearity, we obtain spin-phonon coupling constants of -3.4 and -4.3 cm$^{-1}$ for Co$_4$Nb$_2$O$_9$ and the Ta analog, respectively. Analysis reveals that these coupling constants derive from interlayer (rather than intralayer) exchange interactions and that the interlayer interactions contain competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic contributions. At the same time, beyond-Heisenberg terms are minimized due to fortuitous symmetry considerations, different than most other 4$d$- and 5$d$-containing oxides. Comparison with other contemporary oxides shows that spin-phonon coupling in this family of materials is among the strongest ever reported, suggesting an origin for magnetoelectric coupling.

Magnetoelectrics with ultra-low symmetry and spin-orbit coupling are well known to display a number of remarkable properties including nonreciprocal directional dichroism. As a polar and chiral magnet, Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ is predicted to host this effect in three fundamentally different configurations, although only two have been experimentally verified. Inspired by the opportunity to unravel the structure-property relations of such a unique light-matter interaction, we combined magneto-optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations to reveal nonreciprocity in the toroidal geometry and compared our findings with the chiral configurations. We find that formation of Ni toroidal moments is responsible for the largest effects near 1.1 eV - a tendency that is captured by our microscopic model and computational implementation. At the same time, we demonstrate deterministic control of nonreciprocal directional dichroism in Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ across the entire telecom wavelength range. We combined optical spectroscopy and first principles electronic structure calculations to reveal the charge gap in the polar magnet Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. Iron occupation on the octahedral site draws the gap strongly downward compared to the Zn parent compound, and subsequent occupation of the tetrahedral site creates a narrow resonance near the Fermi energy that draws the gap downward even further. This resonance is a many-body effect that emanates from a flat valence band in a Mott-like state due to screening of the local moment - similar to expectations for a Zhang-Rice singlet, except that here, it appears in a semi-conductor. We discuss the unusual hybridization in terms of orbital occupation and character as well as the structure-property relationships that can be unveiled in various metal-substituted systems (Ni, Mn, Co, Zn).

Conventional BCS superconductors are expected to exhibit a conductivity with vanishing dissipation with decreasing temperature. While bulk physical properties measurements indicate PdPb$_{2}$ is a conventional superconductor with a $T_c$ of 3.0 K, measurements of surface impedance through the microwave cavity perturbation technique indicate a large, non-vanishing dissipative component below $T_c$ that is at odds with conventional superconductivity. We demonstrate PdPb$_2$ to be a possible topological superconductor with a fully gapped bulk and a dissipative Majorana fluid surface.

We report the discovery of a metamagnetic phase transition in a polar antiferromagnet Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ that occurs at 52 T. The new phase transition accompanies a colossal magnetoelectric effect, with a magnetic-field-induced polarization change of 0.3 $\mu$C/cm$^2$, a value that is 4 times larger than for the spin-flop transition at 9 T in the same material, and also comparable to the largest magnetically-induced polarization changes observed to date. Via density-functional calculations we construct a full microscopic model that describes the data. We model the spin structures in all fields and clarify the physics behind the 52 T transition. The high-field transition involves a competition between multiple different exchange interactions which drives the polarization change through the exchange-striction mechanism. The resultant spin structure is rather counter-intuitive and complex, thus providing new insights on design principles for materials with strong magnetoelectric coupling.

The crystal structure of layered metal IrTe2 is determined using single-crystal x-ray diffraction. At T=220 K, it exhibits Ir and Te dimers forming a valence-bond crystal. Electronic structure calculations reveal an intriguing quasi-two-dimensional electronic state, with planes of reduced density of states cutting diagonally through the Ir and Te layers. These planes are formed by the Ir and Te dimers, which exhibit a signature of covalent bonding character development. Evidence for significant charge disproportionation among the dimerized and non-dimerized Ir (charge order) is also presented.

We present Wannier90, a program for calculating maximally-localised Wannier functions (MLWF) from a set of Bloch energy bands that may or may not be attached to or mixed with other bands. The formalism works by minimising the total spread of the MLWF in real space. This done in the space of unitary matrices that describe rotations of the Bloch bands at each k-point. As a result, Wannier90 is independent of the basis set used in the underlying calculation to obtain the Bloch states. Therefore, it may be interfaced straightforwardly to any electronic structure code. The locality of MLWF can be exploited to compute band-structure, density of states and Fermi surfaces at modest computational cost. Furthermore, Wannier90 is able to output MLWF for visualisation and other post-processing purposes. Wannier functions are already used in a wide variety of applications. These include analysis of chemical bonding in real space; calculation of dielectric properties via the modern theory of polarisation; and as an accurate and minimal basis set in the construction of model Hamiltonians for large-scale systems, in linear-scaling quantum Monte Carlo calculations, and for efficient computation of material properties, such as the anomalous Hall coefficient. We investigate the temperature-pressure phase diagram of BaTiO_3 using a first-principles effective-Hamiltonian approach. We find that the zero-point motion of the ions affects the form of the phase diagram dramatically. Specifically, when the zero-point fluctuations are included in the calculations, all the polar (tetragonal, orthorhombic, and rhombohedral) phases of BaTiO_3 survive down to 0 K, while only the rhombohedral phase does otherwise. We provide a simple explanation for this behavior. Our results confirm the essential correctness of the phase diagram proposed by Ishidate et al. (Phys. Rev. The phase-transition sequence of a ferroelectric perovskite such as BaTiO_3 can be simulated by computing the statistical mechanics of a first-principles derived effective Hamiltonian [Zhong, Vanderbilt and Rabe, Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 1861 (1994)]. Within this method, the effect of an external pressure (in general, of any external field) can be studied by considering the appropriate "enthalpy" instead of the effective Hamiltonian itself. The legitimacy of this approach relies on two critical assumptions that, to the best of our knowledge, have not been adequately discussed in the literature to date: (i) that the zero-pressure relevant degrees of freedom are still the only relevant degrees of freedom at finite pressures, and (ii) that the truncation of the Taylor expansion of the energy considered in the effective Hamiltonian remains a good approximation at finite pressures. Here we address these issues in detail and present illustrative first-principles results for BaTiO_3. We demonstrate that polarization-related quantities in semiconductors can be predicted accurately from first-principles calculations using the appropriate approach to the problem, the Berry-phase polarization theory. For III-V nitrides, our test case, we find polarizations, polarization differences between nitride pairs, and piezoelectric constants quite close to their previously established values. Impurity levels and formation energies of acceptors in wurtzite GaN are predicted ab initio. Be_Ga is found to be the shallow (thermal ionization energy $\sim$ 0.06 eV); $Mg_{Ga}$ and $Zn_{Ga}$ are mid-deep acceptors (0.23 eV and 0.33 eV respectively); $Ca_{Ga}$ and $Cd_{Ga}$ are deep acceptors ($\sim$0.65 eV); $Si_N$ is a midgap trap with high formation energy; finally, contrary to recent claims, $C_N$ is a deep acceptor (0.65 eV).
