Lighting talk for Software Sustainability Institute Collaborations Workshop. Briefly presents how a user experience team for a national research program integrates strategy, research, and product development to advance researcher community around a data set and software product.

Materials and text from a keynote given at the Mississippi State University ScholComm Summit on July 22nd, 2016. My presentation was inspired and substantially influenced by "Strategies and partnerships: tailoring data services for your institutional needs" accessible at https://osf.io/pju7g/ "Data services" is a new and developing area of work that libraries are exploring. This talk briefly examines the genealogy of data services, from scholarly communication through public access funder mandates (#OSTPResp) to data visualization and curation, and opines about 5 guiding questions that libraries (and the academic library profession) must grapple with.

Fermentology is a series of mini-lectures led by leading scientists, authors, and researchers -- all focusing on the history and science of the foods we have at home. While the original modality of Fermentology existed through shareable videos, now we strive to increase the accessibility and readability of these mini-lectures by constructing enriched versions of these talks. The enriched talks begin with transcripts from the Fermentology webinars and are then threaded with media, interactive elements, and links to other resources, morphing from a video lecture to a web-primary text for increased longevity, accessibility, and engagement. The goal was to extend and enhance the lectures, invite interested viewers to become readers, and engage participants in the ideas presented -- prioritizing communicated scholarship as a process for “modulating, re-presenting, and then amplifying academic knowledge in non-academic modes” (Vandegrift, 2021). We see this knowledge mobilization and sharing as an experimental form of open publishing, something in the middle of journalism, archival research, digital and public scholarship.&nbsp

Research data services promise to advance many academic libraries’ strategic goals of becoming partners in the research process and integrating library services with modern research workflows. Academic librarians are well positioned to make an impact in this space due to their expertise in managing, curating, and preserving digital information, and a history of engaging with scholarly communications writ large. Some academic libraries have quickly developed infrastructure and support for every activity ranging from data storage and curation to project management and collaboration, while others are just beginning to think about addressing the data needs of their researchers. Regardless of which end of the spectrum they identify with, libraries are still seeking to understand the research landscape and define their role in the process.This article seeks to blend both a general perspective regarding these issues with actual case studies derived from three institutions, University of Cincinnati, Oklahoma State University, and Florida State University, all of which are at different levels of implementation, maturity, and campus involvement.

This piece offers several threads that bind an ideal together: there are practical actions to increase the public-ness of scholarship, increasingly compelling reasons to adopt an outward-orientation, as well as many challenges to performing public scholarship in higher education. We propose that a more public scholarly practice can be sought through the dissemination of research products, the processes by which research and scholarship are conducted, opening pedagogy beyond the classroom, developing soft skills as a public intellectual, and increasing visibility with/in communities.

Digital scholarship is an evolving area of librarianship. In this piece we propose 10 theses, statements about what this kind of work DOES, rather than trying to define with it IS. We believe that digitally-inflected research and learning, and the characteristics they employ, are essential to the recentering of our profession's position in/across the academy. We also believe that the "digital scholarship center" has served its time, and that the activities and models for digital scholarship work are core to librarianship. This manifesto is meant to serve as a starting point for a necessary discussion, not an end-all, be-all. We hope others will write and share counter-manifestos, passionate responses, or affirming statements.

The Coalition of Open Access Policy Institutions (COAPI, https://sparcopen.org/coapi ) is committed to sharing information and resources to assist in the development and implementation of institutional Open Access (OA) policies. The COAPI Toolkit includes a diverse collection of resources that COAPI members have developed in the course of their OA policy initiatives. These resources are openly accessible and published here under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licenses, unless otherwise noted on the resources themselves.

How are roles, responsibilities and expectations changing (and where might they end up)? Libraries are uniquely positioned to play an increasing role in the certain future of academic publishing. We participate in the production, consumption, curation, and promotion of scholarship and yet we don't often exert influence to create a system that benefits the anyone other than the publisher. In this job talk, I propose that libraries should be 1) asserting financial influence on the system, 2) become a deeper part of the production of new research, and 3) create new mediums of discourse, new models for scholarship and new modes of "publishing." This is part of my #openjobtalks concept, wherein the deep intellectual work put into a job talk isn't confined to a presentation room.

Poster presented at the 2016 RDAP Summit by Florida State University Libraries. This poster captures the process of developing and delivering data management services in team setting.

This report summarizes the work of the Scholarly Communications Task Force. The Task Force was charged to:Conduct an environmental scan of FSUs faculty involvement in scholarly publishing; Increase awareness of scholarly communication issues on campus; Explore support for copyright assistance and open-access initiatives with FSU administration; and make recommendations to the Faculty Senate about scholarly communication initiatives and/or policies. The final product of the Task Force was an Open Access Resolution, passed unanimously in the Faculty Senate on Oct. 19, 2011, supporting the continued work of the libraries in exploring and addressing open access on campus.
