Abstract

Most people practice a religion, often multiple times daily. Among the most visible aspects of these practices are body postures, which according to embodiment theories, likely shape the psychological experience of religion. In a preregistered study, we test this idea among Christians, Muslims, and Hindus in the United States, Turkey, and India (N = 2,458). In a repeated-measures experimental design, participants imagined praying in various typical postures, then reported their affective experiences, perceived relationship with deity, and prayer content for each posture. Compared to downward and constrictive postures, expansive and upward postures led to more positive emotions, dominance, and praise-focused prayers, yet fewer introspective or intercessory prayers. Interestingly, these effects varied based on religious context (e.g., many Hindus found upward and expansive postures offensive, causing no positive affect). We further explored whether these effects varied based on posture familiarity, religiosity, interoceptive sensibility, and personality traits. Abstract

Gratitude for another person's actions has received exponential attention from the scientific community for its many benefits. Yet, this research is virtually silent on one key target of gratitude – god – despite billions of people believing in a personal, intervening, and benevolent god. In a large multi-method study, we sampled U.S. Hindus, Muslims, Jews, and Christians (N = 1270). First, we document the prevalence of spontaneous mentions of god as the target of a gratitude expression following a personal success. Only 16% of our religious participants did mention god but priming god increased this number to 29%. Second, we document a wider array of eliciting situations of gratitude to god (GTG) compared to gratitude to another person (GTO) and particularly for broad good things in life that don't have a clear agent. Finally, we document ways that GTG vs. GTO is demonstrated, suggesting that GTG sustains religious practice and builds morality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N = 10, 535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported beta = 0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported beta = 0.039). While most teams applied (multilevel) linear regression models, there was considerable variability in the choice of items used to construct the independent variables, the dependent variable, and the included covariates.

Abstract

We are investigating the roles of individual differences in eliciting reactions to public expressions of gratitude to God among both religious and non-religious people. In this particular study, we will assess the roles of self-esteem, people’s relationships with god (attachment to god, closeness to god), and perceptions of god (negative emotions towards god) in predicting valenced emotional reactions and desire to affiliate with the people making the expressions. In addition, we will test potential mechanisms of these relationships, specifically perceptions of the people making the expressions related to status (perceived status discrepancy) and to relationships with god (perceived discrepancy in quality of relationship with god).

Private and public displays of gratitude to God (GTG) are encouraged in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. However, to our knowledge, there is a severe lack of systemic investigation into the ways which people express GTG. In comparison, research on interpersonal gratitude (IG) is more widespread and extensive. Building on recent work documenting variability in expressions of interpersonal gratitude (e.g., Algoe et al., 2016; Chang & Algoe, 2019), we intend to document the extent and the ways that participants attribute personal success to themselves, to others, or to God. We also intend to investigate the specific ways through which people express their gratitude to God. We have previously run this study with only Christian participants, and are now replicating our past study with new religious groups (Jews, Muslims, and Hindus).

Abstract

We plan to run a series of studies investigating the roles of self-esteem, attachment to God, and religious identity (among other individual differences) in eliciting valenced emotional reactions to gratitude to God expressions, as well as evaluations of the people making the expressions. In order to do this, we would like to test and validate stimuli (naturalistic videos and bogus social media posts) portraying gratitude expressions to ensure that they contain various levels of different characteristics that are ideal for our future research. We would also like to preliminarily test several of our hypotheses related to people’s reactions to the expressions.

Abstract

This study seeks to disentangle the effects of movement fluidity, movement meaning, and the interaction between the two on emotions (positive, negative, and self-transcendent positive), creativity, race conceptions, and affective responses to a video about the impact of racism on health. Participants recruited online (N = 500) will be randomly assigned to draw six lines that are fluid or non-fluid (from Slepian & Ambady, 2012) and to ascribe sacred or non-sacred meaning to the arm movements. Participants will draw three lines at the beginning of the study and three additional lines throughout the study and complete a selection of dependent variables after the third through sixth line drawings. This study is both a direct (for outcome of positive & negative emotions) and a conceptual (for fluid movement manipulation and outcomes of creativity, race conceptions, affective responses to a video about the impact of racism on health) replication of Slepian & Ambady (2012) and Slepian et al. (2014) as well as an extension (for outcome of self-transcendent positive emotions as well as the sacred meaning manipulation) of this research.

Abstract

Although Christians make up over 70% of the United States population (PEW), little research has been conducted (to our knowledge) on how and why gratitude to God (GTG) is expressed. More specifically, we aim to first examine the spontaneous verbal oral expressions of GTG in private prayer, and then test whether such expression of GTG in turn promotes future prayer practice and positive thoughts about God. Without extensive, longitudinal research on GTG verbalizations, further research cannot be conducted. In order to answer questions such as “how do people react to expressions of GTG?” and “how does GTG impact one’s relationship with God?”, we must first characterize how GTG is demonstrated in private prayer and what motivates Christians to do so. The current research will lay the groundwork for further investigation of GTG, as well as providing a robust, longitudinal study of how Christians express GTG and providing preliminary evidence for the impact of such expression on two personally-relevant functional outcomes: relationship with God strength and spiritual quest.

Abstract

The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N = 10, 535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported beta = 0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported beta = 0.039). While most teams applied (multilevel) linear regression models, there was considerable variability in the choice of items used to construct the independent variables, the dependent variable, and the included covariates.

42. More Than a Momentary Blip in the Universe? Investigating the Link Between Religiousness and Perceived Meaning in Life.

Abstract

One longitudinal and four cross-sectional studies (total N = 3,141) tested two candidate explanations for the association between religiousness and perceived meaning in life. Religiousness may foster a sense of significance, importance, or mattering—either to others (social mattering) or in the grand scheme of the universe (cosmic mattering)—which, in turn, support perceived meaning. We found that perceived social mattering mediated, but could not fully explain, the link between religiousness and perceived meaning. In contrast, perceived cosmic mattering did fully explain the association. Overall, results suggest that perceived social and cosmic mattering are each part of the explanation. Abstract

Awe is an emotion frequently experienced in religious contexts. Research has documented the effects of awe on feelings of small self, spirituality, and sense of interconnectedness. We extend this literature by investigating the relationship between awe and religious group cohesion, which can ultimately lead to sacrifice for one's religious group. Study 1 found that U.S. adult participants (N = 782) who experience greater dispositional awe-proneness are more willing to self-sacrifice for their group. This relationship was explained (mediated) by greater reports of a sense of vastness and greater cohesion with one's religious group. In Study 2, U.S. community participants (N = 187) were randomly assigned to an awe induction condition or a neutral condition. While the manipulation successfully elicited feelings of awe and small self (both vastness and self-diminishment), it did not directly affect our other measures. We still found partial evidence for an indirect pathway from awe to vastness, group cohesion, and sacrifice for one's religious group. This research highlights an emotional component of religious group cohesion, with implications for the role of awe in self-sacrificial forms of devotion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The aim of the current paper was to investigate the influence of childbirth on parents' trait emotional intelligence (EI). A three-wave longitudinal research program (during the second trimester of pregnancy, at 6 months postpartum, and at 1 year postpartum) using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model with a hierarchical linear modeling was conducted on 204 parental couples with parental group (i.e., primiparous and multiparous parents) as a time-invariant predictor and the partner's EI development as a time-varying covariate. Results showed that parents' EI was stable, except for Self-Control that increases after childbirth. Moreover, there was a significant negative association between the actor's and the partner's development around childbirth. Childbirth pushes parents to function in dyad rather than individually. Compensatory effects may be observed between both parents in terms of emotional management of parenting: When one partner cannot cope emotionally with parenting, the other partner would compensate and better manage the emotional aspects of parenting. The discussion underlined the importance of the dyadic perspective in understanding the childbirth experience, specifically the parents' receptivity to variation in their partners' emotional levels.
