Abstract
- Private and public displays of gratitude to God (GTG) are encouraged in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. However, to our knowledge, there is a severe lack of systemic investigation into the ways which people express GTG. In comparison, research on interpersonal gratitude (IG) is more widespread and extensive. Building on recent work documenting variability in expressions of interpersonal gratitude (e.g., Algoe et al., 2016; Chang & Algoe, 2019), we intend to document the extent and the ways that participants attribute personal success to themselves, to others, or to God. We also intend to investigate the specific ways through which people express their gratitude to God.
