Aims: Lactobacilli have drawn a great deal of attention due to the heterogeneity of their cells, as well as their remarkable ability to adapt to a range of harsh conditions. One such adaptation response by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum was forming a V-shaped cell structure in low acidic pH conditions. This study aims to identify low pH induced-biofilm formation in L. plantarum and Limosilactobacillus reuteri and their antagonistic interactions with an opportunistic pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1., Methods and Results: Dual species bacterial interactions revealed a Lactobacilli biofilm-mediated suppression of PAO1 biofilms and pyocyanin pigment. Furthermore, filtrates from Lactobacilli grown at low acidic pH (pH 3.5) effectively arrest the pathogenesis of P. aeruginosa PAO1, including biofilm, swarming motility, and pyocyanin formation. Liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis revealed the presence of several Lactobacilli-secreted metabolites and dipeptides that exhibited strong LasR receptor antagonistic interactions in molecular docking analysis. Prolyl-tyrosine showed the best lasR antagonistic and PAO1 biofilm inhibitory activities of the identified dipeptides., Conclusion: Overall, the results will contribute to the development of anti-infective drugs against P. aeruginosa using Lactobacilli secreted dipeptides. This review comprehensively examines the advancements in engineering thermostable phytase through genetic modification and immobilization techniques, focusing on developments from the last seven years. Genetic modifications, especially protein engineering, have enhanced enzyme's thermostability and functionality. Immobilization on various supports has further increased thermostability, with 50-60 % activity retention at higher temperature (more than 50 °C). In the food industry, phytase is used in flour processing and bread making, reducing phytate content by around 70 %, thereby improving nutritional value and mineral bioavailability. In the feed industry, it serves as a poultry feed additive, breaking down phytates to enhance nutrient availability and feed efficiency. The enzyme's robustness at high temperatures makes it valuable in feed processing. The integration of microbial production of phytase with genetically engineered strains followed by carrier free immobilization represents a synergistic approach to fortify enzyme structure and improve thermal stability. Squalene is a natural triterpenoid and a biosynthetic precursor of steroids and hopanoids in microorganisms, plants, humans, and other animals. Squalene has exceptional properties, such as its antioxidant activity, a high penetrability of the skin, and the ability to trigger the immune system, promoting its application in the cosmetic, sustenance, and pharmaceutical industries. Because sharks are the primary source of squalene, there is a need to identify low-cost, environment friendly, and sustainable alternatives for producing squalene commercially. This shift has prompted scientists to apply biotechnological advances to research microorganisms for synthesizing squalene. This study is aimed at investigating the reutilizing of gluten protein from the wheat processing industry by Bacillus subtilis MTCC 2423 protease to obtain gluten hydrolysates with high added value. Gluten protein hydrolysis using protease achieved a 34.07% degree of hydrolysis with 5% gluten protein, at a hydrolysis time of 2 h for 1000 U/mL at pH 8.0 and temperature of 40°C. Compared to the wheat gluten, the obtained hydrolysates exhibited enhanced functional attributes, including heightened solubility (43%), increased emulsifying activity (93.08 m 2 /g), and improved radical scavenging properties. Furthermore, these hydrolysates demonstrated enhanced antioxidant potential, as evidenced by elevated ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) of 81.25% and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) of 56.46% radical scavenging activities and also exhibited a higher α -amylase inhibitory effect of 33.98%. The enhancement in functional characteristics of wheat gluten hydrolysates was observed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The percentage of free amino acids obtained by protease-mediated hydrolysates increased significantly compared to the unhydrolyzed wheat, which was observed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Microbial biosurfactants surpass synthetic alternatives due to their biodegradability, minimal toxicity, selective properties, and efficacy across a wide range of environmental conditions. Owing to their remarkable advantages, biosurfactants employability as effective emulsifiers and stabilizers, antimicrobial and antioxidant attributes, rendering them for integration into food preservation, processing, formulations, and packaging. The biosurfactants can also be derived from various types of food wastes. Biosurfactants are harnessed across multiple sectors within the food industry, ranging from condiments (mayonnaise) to baked goods (bread, muffins, loaves, cookies, and dough), and extending into the dairy industry (cheese, yogurt, and fermented milk). Additionally, their impact reaches the beverage industry, poultry feed, seafood products like tuna, as well as meat processing and instant foods, collectively redefining each sector's landscape. Two-dimensional metal-organic framework nanosheets are attractive as peroxidase mimicking nanocatalysts due to their rich chemical functional groups, large surface area, high porosity, and accessible active sites. In this study, we synthesized FeCu bifunctional 2D MOF nanosheets using a solvothermal method. Fe and Cu ions were added as metal precursors, while organic amine and acid served as the organic ligands to construct the FeCu-MOF nanosheets. These nanosheets demonstrated robust peroxidase-like catalytic activities and were employed to develop a visual detection system for multiple targets, such as glucose and kanamycin. In the detection mechanism, glucose was oxidized into gluconic acid by glucose oxidase (GOx), leading to the generation of H 2 O 2 . When H 2 O 2 is present, the FeCu-MOF NSs demonstrate high intrinsic peroxidase-like activity, which might catalytically oxidize 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into a blue-coloured oxTMB product with a strong UV absorption at 654 nm. Subsequently, kanamycin was added to the above sensing system. The kanamycin strongly interacted with the FeCu-MOF NSs through H-bonding and blocked electron transfer, resulting in a colour change of the solution from blue to colourless with a weak UV absorption at 654 nm. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed colorimetric sensor exhibits an excellent linear response to glucose and kanamycin over the 0.25-5 μM and 0.02-0.1 μM ranges, respectively. The proposed colorimetric assay detection limits for glucose and kanamycin were found to be as low as 0.1 μM and 8 nM, respectively, and such a sensor shows excellent selectivity and sensitivity against different potential interferents. Thus, our proposed colorimetric assay was satisfactory when applied to glucose and kanamycin detection in agricultural and livestock husbandry samples.

The diverse populations reportedly suffer from obesity on a global scale, and inconclusive evidence has indicated that both environmental and genetic factors are associated with obesity development. Therefore, a need exists to examine potential therapeutic or prophylactic molecules for obesity treatment. Prebiotics with non-digestible oligosaccharides (NDOs) have the potential to treat obesity. A limited number of prebiotic NDOs have demonstrated their ability as a convincing therapeutic solution to encounter obesity through various mechanisms, viz .,  stimulating beneficial microorganisms, reducing the population of pathogenic microorganisms, and also improving lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis. A biocatalytic membrane offers an ideal alternative to the conventional treatment process for the removal of toxic pentachlorophenol (PCP). The limelight of the study is to utilize superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) incorporated (poly (methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) (PMVEAMA) and poly (ether - ether) sulfone (PEES)) membrane for immobilization of laccase and its application towards the removal of PCP. In regard to immobilization of Tramates versicolor laccase onto membranes, 5 mM glutaraldehyde with 10 h cross-linking time was employed, yielding 76.92% and 77.96% activity recovery for PEES/PMVEAMA/La and PEES/PMVEAMA/SPIONs/Lac, respectively. In the context of kinetics and stability studies, the immobilized laccase on PEES/PMVEAMA/Lac membrane outperforms the free and PEES/PMVEAMA laccases. At pH 7.0, the free enzyme loses half of its activity, while the immobilized laccases maintained more than 87% of their initial activity even after 480 min. With regard to PCP removal, the removal efficiency of immobilized laccase on the membrane was more than free enzyme. With 100 ppm of PCP, immobilized laccase on PEES/PMVEAMA/SPIONs membrane at pH 4.0 and 50 °C had a removal efficacy of 61.65% in 24 h. Furthermore, to perk up the removal of PCP, the laccase-aided system with mediators was investigated. Amongst, veratryl alcohol displayed 71.04% of PCP removal using immobilized laccase. The reusability of the laccase heightened after immobilization on PEES/PMVEAMA/SPIONs portraying 62.44% of the residual activity with 39.4% of PCP removal even after five cycles. The primary objective of this study is to synthesize the magnetically separable highly active porous immobilized laccase for the removal of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in an aqueous solution. Magnetic porous cross-linked enzyme aggregates (Mp-CLEAs) of laccase were synthesized using 1% starch solution with 5 mM glutaraldehyde followed by 10 h of cross-linking time with an activity recovery of 90.85 ± 0.2%. The biocatalytic efficiency of magnetic porous CLEAs (Mp-CLEAs) was 2-fold higher than that of magnetic CLEAs. The synthesized Mp-CLEAs were mechanically stable with enhanced catalytic efficiency, and reusability thus overcoming the mass transfer limitations and enzyme loss. At 40 °C, the thermal stability of the magnetic porous immobilized laccase was improved, with a 602 min half-life compared to 207 min half-life for the free enzyme. Using 40 U/mL of laccase for the removal of 100 ppm of PCP, M-CLEAs, and Mp-CLEAs removed 60.44% and 65.53% of PCP, respectively. Furthermore, to enhance PCP removal, a laccase-aided system was harnessed by optimizing various surfactants and mediators. Of these, 0.1 mM of rhamnolipid and 2,3 dimethoxy phenol had the highest PCP removal rates of 95.12% and 99.41%, respectively, for Mp-CLEAs. Synthesis and characterization of highly active cross-linked laccase aggregates (CLLAs) were performed and evaluated for removal of pentachlorophenol and phenanthrene from lignocellulosic biorefinery wastewater. Laccase from Tramates versicolor MTCC 138 was insolubilized as CLLAs via precipitation with 70% ammonium sulphate and simultaneous cross-linking with 5 mM glutaraldehyde to obtain activity recovery of 89.1%. Compared to the free laccase, the pH and thermal stability of the prepared CLLAs were significantly higher. At a high temperature of 60 °C, free laccase had a half-life of 0.25 h, while CLLAs had a half-life of 6.2 h. In biorefinery wastewater (pH 7.0), the free and CLLAs were stored for 3 day at a temperature of 30 °C. Free laccase completely lost their initial activity after 60 h; however, the CLLAs retained 39% activity till 72 h. Due to its excellent stability, free laccase and CLLAs were assessed for removing pentachlorophenol and phenanthrene in wastewater. CLLAs could remove 51-58% of pentachlorophenol (PCP) and phenanthrene (PHE) in 24 h. Biosurfactants, including surfactin, sophorolipid, and rhamnolipid, were assessed for their aptitude to improve the removal of organic contaminants in wastewater. Biorefinery wastewater incubated with all surfactants enhanced PCP and PHE removal compared to the no-surfactant controls. Lignocellulosic biomass resource has been widely used as a natural resource for the synthesis of biofuels and bio-based products through pre-treatment, saccharification and fermentation processes. In this review, we delve into the environmental implications of bioethanol production from the widely utilized lignocellulosic biomass resource. The focus of our study is the critical stage of pre-treatment in the synthesis process, which also includes saccharification and fermentation. By collecting scientific data from the available literature, we conducted a comprehensive life cycle analysis. Our findings revealed substantial differences in the environmental burdens associated with diverse pre-treatment methods used for lignocellulosic biomass. These results highlight the importance of selecting environmentally benign pre-treatment techniques to promote the sustainability of bioethanol production. Despite centuries of developing strategies to prevent food-associated illnesses, food safety remains a significant concern, even with multiple technological advancements. Consumers increasingly seek less processed and naturally preserved food options. One promising approach is food biopreservation, which uses natural antimicrobials found in food with a long history of safe consumption and can help reduce the reliance on chemically synthesized food preservatives. The hurdle technology method that combines multiple antimicrobial strategies is often used to improve the effectiveness of food biopreservation. This review attempts to provide a research summary on the utilization of lactic acid bacteria, bacteriocins, endolysins, bacteriophages, and biopolymers helps in the improvement of the shelf-life of food and lower the risk of food-borne pathogens throughout the food supply chain. This study focuses on using Casuarina equisetifolia biomass for pilot-scale glucose oxidase production from Aspergillus niger and its application in the removal of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) from municipal wastewater through the bio-Fenton oxidation. The cost of glucose oxidase was 0.005 $/U, including the optimum production parameters, 10% biomass, 7% sucrose, 1% peptone, and 3% CaCO 3 at 96 h with an enzyme activity of 670 U/mL. Optimized conditions for H 2 O 2 were 1 M glucose, 100 U/mL glucose oxidase, and 120 mins of incubation, resulting in 544.3 mg/L H 2 O 2 . Thus, H 2 O 2 produced under these conditions lead to bio-Fenton oxidation resulting in the removal of 36-92% of nine TrOCs in municipal wastewater at pH 7.0 in 360 mins. In the current study, the use of microwave-assisted sodium hydroxide medium (MWSH) for pre-treatment and saccharification of rice straw to obtain sugar syrup for the production of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF) was investigated. The optimization of the MWSH pre-treatment was carried out using central composite methodology, resulting in a maximum reducing sugar yield of 350 mg/g of treated rice straw (TRS) and a glucose yield of 255 mg/g of TRS under the conditions of a microwave power of 681 W, a NaOH concentration of 0.54 M, and a pre-treatment time of 3 min. Additionally, the microwave assisted transformation of sugar syrup with titanium magnetic silica nanoparticle as catalyst, producing 41.1 % yield of 5-HMF from the sugar syrup after 30 min microwave irradiation at 120 °C with catalyst loading of 2.0:200 (w/v)). The structural characterization of the lignin was analysed using 1 H NMR techniques, and the surface carbon (C1s spectra) and oxygen (O1s spectra) composition changes of the rice straw during pre-treatment were analysed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Background: Novel feeds for improved feed intake and for enhanced nutrient bioavailability have recently attracted attention. Insoluble dietary fibers, especially rice and wheat bran, have generated much interest due to their nutritional value. Incorporating insoluble dietary fiber into diets could be a viable way to maximize the feed conversion ratio., Results: Cross-linked phytase aggregates (CLPA) were synthesized by precipitating enzymes followed by cross-linking with 5 mmol L -1 glutaraldehyde, yielding 88.24 (U g -1 ) of enzyme load without the assistance of a proteic feeder. The epitome of the study is the dephosphorylation of wheat bran and rice bran by varying pH, enzyme concentration, and temperature. The highest inorganic phosphorus liberation by 150 U L- -1 of free phytase was 23.72 (wheat bran) and 48.08 mg g -1 (rice bran) after 12 h of incubation.  Furthermore, 150 U L -1 of CLPA liberated 28.72 (wheat bran) and 52.08 mg g -1 (rice bran) of inorganic phosphorus with an incubation time of 12 h., Conclusion: Thermostable free phytase was insolubilized to dephosphorylate the agro-residue, namely, wheat bran and rice bran, to reduce the anti-nutritional factor (the phytate content) of these insoluble dietary fibers. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.)

The potential health benefits of probiotics may not be cognized because of the substantial curtailment in their viability during food storage and passage through the gastrointestinal system. Intestinal flora composition, and resistance against pathogens are among the health benefits associated with probiotic consumption. In the gastric environment, pH 2.0, probiotics dramatically lose their viability during the transit through the gastrointestinal system. The challenge remains to maintain cell viability until it reaches the large intestine. In extreme conditions, such as a decrease in pH or an increase in temperature, encapsulation technology can enhance the viability of probiotics. Probiotic bacterial strains can be encapsulated in a variety of ways. The methods are broadly systematized into two categories, liquid and solid delivery systems. Probiotics are live bacteria found in food that assist the body's defence mechanisms against pathogens by reconciling the gut microbiota. Probiotics are believed to aid with gut health, the immune system, and brain function, among other factors. They've furthermore been shown to help with constipation, high blood pressure, and skin issues. The global probiotics market has been incrementally growing in recent years, as consumers' demand for healthy diets and wellness has continued to increase. This has prompted the food industry to develop new probiotic-containing food products, as well as researchers to explore their specific characteristics and impacts on human health. Although most probiotics are fastidious microorganisms that are nutritionally demanding and sensitive to environmental conditions, they become less viable as they are processed and stored. Composite polymeric membranes with enhanced anti-fouling properties, antimicrobial activities and flux were produced via the phase inversion technique using poly (ether-ether-sulfone) (PEES)/polyethylene glycol (PEG) and n-ZnO. SEM and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy were used to study the morphological and chemical properties of the resulting ultrafiltration membranes. PEG and n-ZnO concentration has an effect on membrane morphologies, ultrafiltration performance, thermal characteristics, metal ion separation studies, surface hydrophilicity and anti-fouling capabilities. The permeate flux increased when the PEG concentration was raised. This results revealed that adding PEG and n-ZnO to membranes increased their surface hydrophilicity and anti-fouling properties. The inclusion of 1.5 wt % n-ZnO and 5 wt % PEG to the pristine PEES membrane resulted in a higher flux of 233.76 L m -2 h -1 , 70.09 % of water content, 47.46° of contact angle, the porosity of 30.20 %, and hydraulic resistance of 0.22 kPa/Lm -2 h -1 . Anti-fouling properties of the fabricated membrane were assessed using a model foulant BSA, which revealed a high flux recovery ratio value. As a result, the PEG and n-ZnO incorporated membrane is more hydrophilic than the virgin membrane. In addition, the prepared PEES/PEG/n-ZnO membrane showed a significant increase in metal ions and protein rejection. Furthermore, an antibacterial test of the membrane revealed that the PEG and n-ZnO composite membrane outperformed the bare PEES membrane in terms of antibacterial capabilities. In the present study, surface-active compounds (SAC) were extracted from biosolids using an alkaline treatment process. They were tested for their remediation efficiency of crude oil-contaminated sediment soil and was compared with Triton x-100. The SAC exhibited a similar soil washing efficiency to that of the commercial Triton x-100, and under the optimized soil washing parameters, SAC exhibited a maximum of 91% total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons removal. Further, on analysing the toxicity of the soil residue after washing, it was observed that SAC from biosolids washed soil exhibited an average of 1.5-fold lesser toxicity compared to that of Triton x-100 on different test models-earthworm, a monocot, and dicot plants. The analysis of the key soil parameters revealed that the commercial surfactant reduced the soil organic matter and porosity by an average of 1.3-fold compared to SAC. Further, the ability of surfactants to induce toxicity was confirmed by the adsorption of the surfactants on the surface of the soil particles which was in the order of Triton x-100 > SAC. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a fermentation inhibitor which is formed during acid-based thermochemical pre-treatment of biomass. The present study involves two approaches for HMF conversion; the first includes screening and identification of fungal strains which produce oxidoreductases for HMF bioconversion, and thereafter evaluating their roles in HMF conversion. Out of the ten fungal strains screened, genetically engineered Trichoderma atroviride (Lac + ) showed maximum HMF bioconversion and the activities of ligninolytic enzymes produced were noted. Maximum HMF conversion of 99% was achieved at pH 5.0 and 30 °C when 72 h old 10% inoculum of T. atroviride (Lac + ) was utilized for 6 days. Based on the fungal bioconversion of HMF to 2, 5 diformylfuran with 58% yield, laccase was observed to influence the conversion process. Thus, a comparative study was established on HMF conversion by 100 U/mL of commercial laccases and partially purified laccase from T. atroviride (Lac+). The novelty of this study deals with the biocatalytic treatment of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) from municipal wastewater by insolubilized laccase. Laccase from Trametes versicolor was aggregated by three-phase partitioning technique followed by cross-linking with glutaraldehyde to produce insolubilized laccase as cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEAs). The optimal conditions for CLEAs preparation include ammonium sulphate concentration of 83% (w/v), crude to t-butanol ratio of 1.00: 1.05 (v/v), pH 5.3, and glutaraldehyde concentration of 20 mM obtained via statistical design. The efficiency of insolubilization of the CLEAs laccase based on the k cat /k m ratio was approximately 4.8-fold greater than that of free laccase. The developed CLEAs showed greater resistance to product inhibition mediated by ABTS than the free enzyme and exhibited excellent catalytic activity even after the tenth successive cycle. Further, free laccase and the synthesized CLEAs laccase were utilized to treat five analgesics, two NSAIDS, three antibiotics, two antilipemics, and three pesticides in the municipal wastewater. Under the batch process with operating conditions of pH 7.0 and 20 °C, 1000 U/L of CLEAs, laccase removed 11 TrOCs in the range of about 20-99%. However, the inactivated CLEAs only adsorbed 2-25% of TrOCs. It was observed that acetaminophen, mefenamic acid, trimethoprim, and metolachlor depicted almost complete removal with CLEAs laccase. This study explains the use of a ultrafiltration membrane made of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and poly(ether ether sulfone) (PEES)/Nano-titania (n-TiO 2 ) for the separation of organic compounds. The results of the tests for porosity, water content, surface chemistry, membrane morphology, and contact angle demonstrated that the developed membranes have more hydrophilicity than PEES membranes due to the redundant hydrophilic nature of PVP and n-TiO 2 . The membrane pure water flux, which contains 5 wt% PVP and 1.5 wt% n-TiO 2, was 312.76 Lm -2 h -1 , about three-fold higher than that of pristine membrane (95.71 Lm -2 h -1 ). Employing bovine serum albumin as a model foulant, the fouling resistance of the PEES/PVP/n-TiO 2 membrane was examined. According to the analysis of flux recovery ratio and irreversible resistance, modified membranes were less likely to foul, and the PEES/n-TiO 2 membrane with 5% PVP addition was recommended as optimal. The fabricated membranes effectively removed more than 95% of various organic compounds such as humic acid, safranin O, egg albumin, pepsin, and trypsin from aqueous solution. In this study, Pleurotus dryinus was grown on municipal biosolids (BS) as the substrate to produce laccase for the removal of pesticides (fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides) from wastewater. Among the various types of BS tested, sterilized biosolids were the most promising substrate for laccase production by P. dryinus with a maximal laccase activity (162.1 ± 21.1 U/g dry substrate), followed by hygenized biosolids (96.7 ± 17.6 U/g dry substrate), unsterilized biosolids (UBS) (31.9 ± 1.2 U/g dry substrate), and alkali-treated biosolids (8.2 ± 0.4 U/g dry substrate). The ultrasound-assisted extraction of this enzyme from fermented UBS was carried out with 0.1 M phosphate buffer at pH 7.0, which increased the enzyme activity of the crude extract by 30%. To test the catalytic potential of the biocatalyst in real matrices, 1 U/ml of recovered crude laccase extract was applied for 24 h for the removal of 29 pesticides (nine fungicides, 10 herbicides, and 10 insecticides) either separately or as a mixture from spiked biologically treated wastewater effluent. When treated with crude enzyme extract, high-priority herbicides metolachlor and atrazine were completely removed, while 93%-97% of the insecticides aldicarb, spinosad, and azinphos-methyl and up to 91% of kresoxim-methyl were removed. Promising results were obtained with BS-derived crude enzyme extract exhibiting improved pesticides removal, which may be due to the mediator effect resulting from the catalytic transformation of other molecules in the cocktail. Biocatalytically synthesized mono-rhamnolipids are eco-friendly surfactants that exhibit strong industrial applications owing to their low toxicity and biodegradability as well as their efficient antimicrobial and surface tension reduction potential. In this present study, novel adsorbent chitosan encapsulated magnetic nanoparticles coated with rhamnolipids (Rh-cMNP) were prepared and used for the adsorption of the micropollutant acetaminophen. The SEM, FTIR, and VSM results showed that Rh-cMNP had abundant functional groups with a mesoporous feature and easy separation of the magnetic nanosorbent from the reaction mixture. The obtained nanosorbent was effectively used to remove acetaminophen, one of the most common persistent pharmaceutical pollutants in the environment. Optimization studies revealed the maximum removal of 96.7% acetaminophen with the ability of adsorption to be 96.3 mg/g at 60 min of contact time and process parameters of pH 5.0 and 303 K temperature. Langmuir isotherm was most favourable for the optimized data; kinetic studies obeyed pseudo-second-order whose feasibility and thermodynamic studies obtained spontaneity. Membrane fouling is one of the challenging bottleneck problems in waste water treatment by membrane process. The present study constructed a nanofiltration membrane based on the zinc oxide nanoparticle (n-ZnO) integrated Poly(ether ether sulfone) (PEES) membranes. The developed membranes were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance - fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (AT-FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Pure water flux, contact angle, molecular weight cut-off, mean pore size and porosity were determined to investigate the influence of n-ZnO on the properties of the membranes. The characterization showed asymmetric configuration of membranes after n-ZnO incorporation. This incorporation also enhanced the hydrophilicity of PEES membrane. The fouling-resistant potential of the membranes was investigated by the model foulant humic acid (HA) and an enhanced anti-fouling irreversible property with a corresponding flux recovery rate of 92.43 % was noted for the prepared membrane. The rejection performance and permeability of HA was 98.03 % and 166.73 L m -2 h -1 , respectively, owing to the hydrophilic nature of ZnO particles. Further, modified PEES membrane exhibited superior separation performance for monovalent and divalent anions. Remediation of emerging pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) as micropollutants in wastewater is of foremost importance as they can cause extremely detrimental effects on life upon bioaccumulation and generation of drug-resistance microorganisms. Presently used physicochemical treatments, such as electrochemical oxidation, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis, are not feasible owing to high operating costs, incomplete removal of contaminants along with toxic by-products formation. Adsorption with the utilization of facile and efficient nanoparticulate adsorbents having distinctive properties of high surface area, excellent adsorption capacity, ability to undergo surface engineering and good regeneration displays great potential in this aspect along with the incorporation of nanotechnology for effective treatment. The application of such nanosorbents provides optimal performance under a wide range of physicochemical conditions, decreased secondary pollution with reduced mechanical stress along with excellent organic compound sequestration capacity, which in turn improves the quality of potable water in a sustainable way compared to current treatments. The current study aimed in enhancing the efficiency of alkaline treatment for CECs remediation in biosolids through the application of RSM and ANN. Due to the seasonal variation of CECs in biosolids, a complete CECs profile over a period of three years were performed. Out of 64 targeted CECs, 13 PhACs (70.1 μg/kg) and 10 pesticides (57.2 μg/kg) were detected in biosolids. In order to enhance the remediation efficiency of CECs by alkaline treatment, process parameters - pH (9.0-13.0), time (3.0-12.0 h) and biosolids age (1-28 days) were optimized by statistical modelling. Using Box-Behnken design, experiments were designed and the resultant data was employed as input for model building using RSM and ANN. The developed mathematical model for alkaline treatment of biosolids using ANN predicted CECs removal with 3.2-fold lower MSE and exhibited high regression coefficient (R 2  > 0.99) than the conventional RSM model. Further, the multiparameter model was optimized for achieving maximum of 95.7 % CECs removal using ANN-GA. On analyzing the acute toxicity of alkaline treated residual biosolids under the optimized conditions, a reduction in LC50 by an average of 2.1-fold than initial biosolids was observed. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the most persistent xenobiotic compounds, with high toxicity effects. Mycoremediation with halophilic Aspergillus sydowii was used for their removal from a hypersaline medium (1 M NaCl). A. sydowii metabolized PAHs as sole carbon sources, resulting in the removal of up to 90% for both PAHs [benzo [a] pyrene (BaP) and phenanthrene (Phe)] after 10 days. Elimination of Phe and BaP was almost exclusively due to biotransformation and not adsorption by dead mycelium and did not correlate with the activity of lignin modifying enzymes (LME). Transcriptomes of A. sydowii grown on PAHs, or on glucose as control, both at hypersaline conditions, revealed 170 upregulated and 76 downregulated genes. Upregulated genes were related to starvation, cell wall remodelling, degradation and metabolism of xenobiotics, DNA/RNA metabolism, energy generation, signalling and general stress responses. Changes of LME expression levels were not detected, while the chloroperoxidase gene, possibly related to detoxification processes in fungi, was strongly upregulated. We propose that two parallel metabolic pathways (mitochondrial and cytosolic) are involved in degradation and detoxification of PAHs in A. sydowii resulting in intracellular oxidation of PAHs. In the present study, highly pure rhamnolipids (RLs) was produced using biocatalysts immobilized on amino-functionalized chitosan coated magnetic nanoparticles. Upon immobilizing naringinase and Candida antarctica lipase B (CaLB) under the optimized conditions, an enhanced operational stability with biocatalytic loads of 935 ± 2.4 U/g (naringinase) and 825 ± 4.1 U/g (CaLB) were achieved. Subsequently, the immobilized biocatalysts were utilized sequentially in a two-step RLs synthesis process. The key parameters involved in RLs production were optimized using artificial neural network (ANN) coupled genetic algorithm (GA) and were compared with composite central design (CCD). On validating the efficiency of both models, mean square errors of 1.58% (CCD) and 1.04% (ANN) were obtained. Optimization of parameters by ANN-GA resulted in 1.2-fold increase in experimental RLs yield (80.53%), which was 1.05-fold higher when compared to CCD model. Further, to establish the efficiency of RLs as a bioremediation agent, it was utilized as washing agent. It was observed that at a soil to RLs volume of 1:05, RLs concentration of 0.4 mg/mL, a 95.35 ± 1.33% removal of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPHs) was obtained at 35 ℃ and 160 rpm in 75 min. Owing to the global industrialization, a new generation of pharmaceutical pollutants with high toxicity and persistency have been detected. In the present study, silica microspheres, a promising adsorbent has been employed to investigate the extent of removal of prevalent therapeutic acetaminophen, an emerging micropollutant, from wastewater in isolated batch experiments. The BET surface area of the adsorbent was 105.46 m 2 /g with a pore size of 15 nm. Characterization of adsorbent by scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed the microparticulate nature with a 15 ± 5 μm particle size. Optimization of reaction parameters for enhanced assimilative removal of pollutants was performed and the highest adsorption of 96.7% of acetaminophen with an adsorption capacity of 89.0 mg/g was observed upon contact time of only 30 min. Mild process conditions of pH 5.0, 20 ppm of acetaminophen, temperature of 303 K, and 100 ppm sorbent concentration further aided in the removal process. Obtained data were best corresponded with the Freundlich isotherm (n = 2.685), indicating highly favorable adsorption. Acetaminophen adsorption kinetics obeyed the pseudo second order and feasible energetic changes were yielded through the thermodynamic analysis. The present work pronounces the three phase partitioning (TPP)-facilitated preparation of porous cross-linked Candida antarctica lipase B (CaLB) aggregates (pCLEAs) for 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) esters synthesis. CLEAs and pCLEAs of CaLB were prepared with eupergit as the support under the optimized conditions of pH 8.0, eupergit/protein ratio of 3.0:1.0, 50 mM cross-linker concentration and 3.3 mg/mL BSA concentration in 4 h. The optimum starch concentration for pCLEAs was 0.20%, m/v. The maximum biocatalytic load was 650 U/g (CLEAs) and 721 U/g (pCLEAs), and the immobilized biocatalysts were stable over a pH range of 6.0-9.0 and temperature range of (40-60)°C. The BET surface area of CLEAs and pCLEAs were 21.3 and 29.1 m 2 /g, respectively, and the catalytic efficiency of pCLEAs was 2.2-fold higher than that of CLEAs. Subsequently, the pCLEAs of CaLB were utilized for the manufacturing of industrially significant HMF esters. Under the optimized transesterification conditions, HMF conversion with pCLEAs CaLB was 1.41- and 1.25-fold higher than with free and CLEAs CaLB, respectively. The present study deals with the development of a wood assisted fungal system (WAFS) from wood chips using Trametes hirsuta to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in BRW. The WAFS exhibited a 1.4-fold higher ligninolytic enzyme production than free fungi in the effluent. Further, to understand PAHs bioremediation by T. hirsuta, biodegradation along with biosorption were studied in model PAHs, phenanthrene (Phe) and benzo (a) pyrene (BaP), in the presence of synthesized rhamnolipids. The WAFS mineralized up to an average of 91.26% Phe and 87.72 % BaP along with biosorption of 12.35% Phe and 18.36 % BaP within 12 days. Thus, the addition of rhamnolipids showed 1.2-fold enhanced biodegradation. However, rhamnolipid concentrations beyond 50 ppm reduced the degradation efficiency of WAFS. Moreover, the degradation capability of total aromatic hydrocarbon (TAH) in biorefinery wastewater by WAFS is 1.8-fold higher than that of free fungi, which confirms the effectiveness of the system. Implications : Simultaneous application of white-rot fungus along with surfactant into a pollutant environment affects the microenvironment of the fungus and reduces the production of their degradative enzymes. In addition, the requirement of periodical supplement of external nutrient in the real-time matrix for the growth of white rot fungi may trigger competitive growth of indigenous microorganisms. Considering this glitch, the current work utilizes the carpenter waste for the strategical develop a wood assisted fungal system to protect the microenvironment of the fungi in the presence of rhamnolipids and contribute to their survival in real time matrix, with enhanced PAHs degradation efficiency.

The current work focuses on the production of glucose oxidase (GOD) in sterilized biosolid (BS) slurries containing BS and municipal wastewater effluent. Various parameters were optimized for maximizing the GOD production and the effects of biostimulation on GOD production was investigated by adding synthetic media components. The studies on inoculum characteristics at an inoculum age of 72 h and inoculum size of 20% (w/v) produced high GOD activities of around 6012 U/L in 25% (dw/v) BS media. Further, the effect of ultrasonication time was determined to release BS-bound GOD in order to maximize enzymes recovery. Using 1000 U/L of the BS-based GOD for 0.55 M glucose oxidation produced the maximum H 2 O 2 concentration of 216 ppm. In the present study, a Bio-Fenton oxidation approach for the removal of trichloroethylene (TCE) was developed through the optimization of enzyme-based hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production from glucose. Glucose oxidase (GOD) was evaluated for the production of H 2 O 2 and the optimized parameters were found to be the oxidation of 60 mM glucose by 1 mg mL -1 of GOD which yielded a conversion of 88.4% of glucose for subsequent utilization in the Bio-Fenton process. The biologically produced H 2 O 2 was further used for the removal of TCE from groundwater samples by addition of ferrous ion to the reaction mixture. To determine the efficiency of hydroxyl radicals generated in Fenton reactions to remove TCE in a cost-efficient way, preliminary experiments such as classical Fenton and pseudo Bio-Fenton were carried out in aqueous solutions containing TCE in order to obtain the optimum conditions and then the efficiency of bio-Fenton was tested in groundwater. Based on these results, almost 97% of TCE was removed from aqueous solution within 30 min of classical Fenton under low pH condition (pH 3.0). While performing pseudo bio-Fenton experiments, the optimum conditions were determined to be pH 7.0 and 30 ppm H 2 O 2 which yielded 61% removal of TCE in 30 min. Although a comparatively lower removal (30.2%) in groundwater containing TCE was achieved using Bio-Fenton process, it was at a neutral pH. The process was further enhanced by the addition of hydrogen peroxide after 3 h of reaction and a maximum of 48.4% removal of TCE was observed. Bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil matrix is often arbitrated by the presence of soil organic matter (SOM). The present study focuses on determining the effect of the soil organic content on the mycoremediation of two model PAHs, phenanthrene (Phe) and benzo(a) pyrene (BaP) through microcosm studies. On comparing various microcosm strategies, a maximum degradation of Phe (99%) and BaP (48.5%) in soil bioaugmented with Pleurotus dryinus IBB 903, followed by, biostimulation with the degradation of Phe (89.9%) and BaP (24.8%) were noted. On relating the degradation pattern with lignolytic enzyme cocktail production, a laccase activity of 108 U/Kg at day 21, aryl alcohol oxidase (411 U/Kg) and manganese peroxidase (52.2 U/Kg) at day 14 along with lignin peroxidase (481 U/Kg) at day 21 were noted in fungal augmented soils, which were comparatively higher than levels observed in the bio-stimulation. Investigating the impact of different concentration of SOM (3-12%), a maximum remediation of Phe by 100% at 9% SOM in days 28 and 58.19% for BaP at 12% SOM, respectively was exhibited. Further, the biosorption effect of PAHs in abiotic condition showed a positive correlation with the increase in SOM, with a maximum adsorption of 3.78% Phe, and 6.93% BaP. The results support that the nominal adsorption ability of SOM, and helps in enhancing the microbial growth, thereby improving their degradation potentials, when less than 6% of SOM was utilized. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and pharmaceutical compounds (PhC) are xenobiotics present in many saline wastewaters. Although fungi are known for their ability to remove xenobiotics, the potential of halophilic fungi to degrade highly persistent pollutants was not yet investigated. The use of two halophilic fungi, Aspergillus sydowii and Aspergillus destruens, for the elimination of PAH and PhC at saline conditions was studied. In saline synthetic medium both fungi used benzo-α-pyrene and phenanthrene as sole carbon source and removed over 90% of both PAH, A. sydowii due to biodegradation and A. destruens to bioadsorption. They removed 100% of a mixture of fifteen PAH in saline biorefinery wastewater. Test using Cucumis sativus demonstrated that wastewater treated with the two fungi lowered considerably the phytotoxicity. In this study, chitosan functionalised magnetic nano-particles (CMNP) was synthesised and utilised as an effective adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution. The experimental studies reveal that adsorbent material has finer adsorption capacity for the removal of heavy metal ions. Parameters affecting the adsorption of Pb(II) ions on CMNP, such as initial Pb(II) ion concentration, contact time, solution pH, adsorbent dosage and temperature were studied. The adsorption equilibrium study showed that present adsorption system followed a Freundlich isotherm model. The experimental kinetic studies on the adsorption of Pb(II) ions exhibited that present adsorption process best obeyed with pseudo-first order kinetics. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of CMNP for the removal of Pb(II) ions was found to be 498.6 mg g -1 . The characterisation of present adsorbent material was done by FTIR, energy disperse X-ray analysis and vibrating sample magnetometer studies. Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy (Δ G °), enthalpy (Δ H °) and entropy (Δ S °) have declared that the adsorption process was feasible, exothermic and spontaneous in nature. Sticking probability reported that adsorption of Pb(II) ions on CMNP was favourable at lower temperature and sticking capacity of Pb(II) ions was very high.

Elimination of heavy metals from contaminated streams is of prime concern due to their ability to cause toxic chaos with the metabolism of flora and fauna alike. Use of advanced nano-engineered technologies such as the innovative combination of surface chemistry, chemical engineering fundamentals and nanotechnology opens up particularly attractive horizons towards treatment of heavy metal contaminated water resources. The obtained product of surface engineered nanoadsorbent produced has successfully proven to show rapid adsorption rate and superior sorption efficiency towards the removal of a wide range of defiant heavy metal contaminants in wastewater. The use of these materials in water treatment results in markedly improved performance features like large surface area, good volumetric potential, extra shelf-lifetime, less mechanical stress, stability under operational conditions with excellent sorption behaviour, no secondary pollution, strong chelating capabilities and they are easy to recover and reuse. This review intends to serve as a one-stop-reference by bringing together all the recent research works on nanoparticles synthesis and its advantages as adsorbents in the treatment of heavy metal polluted wastewater that have so far been undertaken, thereby providing researchers with a deep insight and bridging the gap between past, present and future of the elegant nanosorbents.
