This volume, a tribute to François Gros and a celebration of the field of Tamil studies, demonstrates the international nature of this area and its wide range of topics. The contributors stem from sixteen different countries. They are literary historians and critics, philologists, linguists, cultural anthropologists, political and social historians, archaeologists, epigraphists, numismatists, art and architecture historians, some of them assuming two of these guises, and some having an interest in related languages: Irula, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu. However there is much linkage and this "connexité dans la diversité" binds the different contributions together. François Gros has been the principal standard-bearer for Tamil studies in France. He has also devoted himself to the re-establishment of the École Française d’Extrême-Orient in countries of Southeast Asia. Among his other responsibilities has been the directorship for Tamil studies at the Institut Français in Pondicherry. Ce volume, hommage à François Gros et célébration du champ des études tamoules, montre la nature internationale de ce domaine et sa largeur. Les participants proviennent de 16 pays. Les disciplines concernées sont : histoire et critique littéraire, philologie, linguistique, anthropologie culturelle, histoire politique et sociale, archéologie, épigraphie, numismatique, histoire de l’art et de l’architecture. Certaines des contributions sont à cheval entre elles, et certaines concernent des langues voisines : Irula, Kannada, Malayalam et Telugu, tandis qu’une “connexité dans la diversité” fait l’unité du volume. François Gros a été le principal représentant des études tamoules en France. Il s’est également consacré, comme directeur, à la réinstallation de l’École Française d’Extrême-Orient dans les pays d’Asie du Sud-Est. Il a aussi été responsable scientifique de la section de tamoul à l’Institut Français de Pondichéry.

This thesis is focused on theoretical study of influence of the silanol nest defects on the hydrolysis of zeolite Chabazite under harsh steaming conditions. The motivation of the thesis was a recent experiment proving that the silanol nest defect enhances the hydrolysis of a zeolite. The harsh steaming conditions have been chosen as some important technological processes involving zeolites require high temperatures and have water vapour present. The study was performed by using density functional theory calculations. To investigate the influence of the defect two models were used a reference pristine model and a defected model containing the silanol nest defect. The two models were pure siliceous Chabazite periodical models with supercell containing 36 and 35 Si tetrahedra respectively. A multi-step hydrolysis leading to detachment of a Si(OH)4 cluster from the zeolite, known as total desilication, was calculated for the two models. Multiple possible paths of the hydrolysis were discovered, compared and discussed on both models. Both the most favourable hydrolysis paths of the two model as well as their arithmetic means were compared. The experimentally set expectations that a silanol nest defect enhances the hydrolysis of the zeolite have been met.

Background: Despite a slight decline in the prevalence of substance use among adolescents in last years, there is a constant need for effective, available and well-targeted preventive interventions. Children of parents with substance use experiences are considered to be more endangered. Although the quality and availability of universal prevention programs has improved, their effectiveness is not usually systematically verified, moreover, the impact on children of parents with substance use experiences is unknown. The Unplugged preventive intervention was supplemented by nPrevention booster sessions in order to support its research-proven preventive impact. Aims: The main objective was to evaluate the effect of Unplugged and nPrevention programs combination (Un+nP) after 24 months in comparison with Unplugged program (Un) alone and control in respect of the substance use experience in parents. The secondary objective was to test the reliability of anonymous self-generated identification code (SGIC) and the process of matching children's questionnaires between waves of data collection and with parents' questionnaires. Background: In September 2012, a series of methanol poisonings occurred in the Czech Republic as a result of an influx of illicit alcohol into (predominantly) cheap alcoholic beverages on the retail market. The public authorities decided to prevent public health risks by prohibiting sales of liquors that contained more than 20% alcohol (> 20% liquor). The “partial” prohibition lasted for almost two weeks, but the poisonings still continued. This article assesses the impact of the methanol poisoning risks and the (partial) prohibition on alcohol drinking patterns, and describes the understanding of risks and their mitigation in vulnerable groups. Methods: The rapid assessment and response method (RAR) was used during the (partial) alcohol prohibition. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with respondents recruited for the study in alcohol-intake settings (e.g., bars and restaurants, street alcohol outlets) in six regions. In total, 107 alcohol users were interviewed, mostly with risky drinking patterns (69% scored ≥ 1 on the CAGE scale), and 53 alcohol retailers/staff members serving alcohol. Results: About one third of the alcohol users in the study (35%) drank > 20% liquors during the prohibition; a higher score on the CAGE scale was associated with a lower probability of drinking > 20% liquors during the period of the prohibition, probably because of the perception of being at high risk of poisoning. There was some increase in drinking liquors with an alcohol content less than 20%. Those who continued drinking > 20% liquors typically did so in the belief that some sources of these were safe. Conclusions: Public policies aimed at reducing the risk of methanol poisonings in emergency situations should adopt broader measures than those focusing on market control. These measures include increased access to brief interventions, addressing the strategies that alcohol consumers adopt to prevent risk, and, in general, helping consumers make informed choices to prevent further fatalities.

Consonanze, A World of Nourishment. Reflections on Food in Indian Culture, ed. by Cinzia Pieruccini and Paola M. Rossi (Consonanze, 3)

Helical chirality is a novel enantioselectivity-inducing property in transition-metal-catalyzed transformations. The principle is illustrated herein for the example of asymmetric olefin metathesis. This work reports the synthesis of the first helically chiral Ru-NHC alkylidene complex from an aminohelicene-derived imidazolium salt, which was ligated to the first generation Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst. Kinetic data were acquired for benchmark test reactions and compared to an achiral catalyst. The helically chiral Ru-catalyst was evaluated in asymmetric ring-closing metathesis (RCM) and ring-opening metathesis-cross-metathesis (ROM/CM) reactions, which proceeded with promising levels of enantioselectivity. Extensive NMR-spectroscopic investigations and a DFT geometry optimization were performed. These results led to a topographic steric map and calculation of percent-buried-volume values for each quadrant around the metal center.

Zeolites are a group of aluminosilicate minerals with catalytic properties. They may be used for many industrial applications such as catalytic cracking of oil. Zeolites are also capable of converting ethanol to diethylether and ethylen. This reaction is known as dehydration of ethanol. The reaction is potentially interesting as a way of converting ethanol to more valuable molecules. An experimental study (Shashikant A. Kadam, Mariya V. Shamzhy, 2018) has proven that diethylether is the preferred product when the temperatures are low and the partial pressure of ethanol is high. Ethylen is more significant product with higher temperature and lower partial pressure of ethanol. Aim of this thesis is to determine the mechanism of dehydration of ethanol. Furthermore it was attempted to explain the behavior of the reaction under different circumstances. The research was done in silico using the methods of computational chemistry. Such methods give information on the geometry and the energy of systems of molecules. Thus computational chemistry can be used to investigate the relational path and activation energy of the studied reaction. This thesis is a theoretical study of dehydration of ethanol catalysed by a zeolite.
