There is an urgent need to engage with deep leverage points in sustainability transformations—fundamental myths, paradigms, and systems of meaning making—to open new collective horizons for action. Art and creative practice are uniquely suited to help facilitate change in these deeper transformational leverage points. However, understandings of how creative practices contribute to sustainability transformations are lacking in practice and fragmented across theory and research. This lack of understanding shapes how creative practices are evaluated and therefore funded and supported, limiting their potential for transformative impact. This paper presents the 9 Dimensions tool, created to support reflective and evaluative dialogues about links between creative practice and sustainability transformations. It was developed in a transdisciplinary process between the potential users of this tool: researchers, creative practitioners, policy makers, and funders. It also brings disciplinary perspectives on societal change from evaluation theory, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and more in connection with each other and with sustainability transformations, opening new possibilities for research. The framework consists of three categories of change, and nine dimensions: changing meanings (embodying, learning, and imagining); changing connections (caring, organizing, and inspiring); and changing power (co-creating, empowering, and subverting). We describe how the 9 Dimensions tool was developed, and describe each dimension and the structure of the tool. We report on an application of the 9 Dimensions tool to 20 creative practice projects across the European project Creative Practices for Transformational Futures (CreaTures). We discuss user reflections on the potential and challenges of the tool, and discuss insights gained from the analysis of the 20 projects. Games have become established tools within participatory urban planning practice that provide safe spaces for collective actions such as deliberation, negotiation of conflicting agendas, scenario testing, and collaborative worldbuilding. While a body of literature on the effectiveness of games to address complex urban planning issues is emerging, significantly less literature addresses the design and development process of serious games with a possible space in its own right within urban planning practice. Our study investigates long term iterative processes of designing a game for visioning urban futures, specifically, how design iterations connect to the application of games in practice by accommodating or responding to emerging needs, goals, and relationships. We approach this topic through the case study of the Sustainability Futures Game, a game designed by the Helsinki-based creative agency Hellon to support business leaders, sustainability specialists, and city officials to imagine desirable alternative urban futures. Through storytelling and collective worldbuilding, players first imagine what sustainable urban living means for a specific city, frame their vision using the UN's sustainable development goals, and finally create concrete pathways towards reaching these goals. This article uses a genealogical approach to systematically analyse the five design iterations of the Sustainability Futures Game. It aims to elucidate the contextual and relational influences on the application of serious games in urban planning practice to understand how these influences might encourage or inhibit their potential to foster transformation towards sustainable futures.

Designers have increasingly worked with tackling the wicked problems of the modern world, such as chronic illnesses, aging population or social exclusion. In the context of social innovation, design approach has appeared promising as a means of providing more sustainable solutions especially due to its holistic and human-centered nature. On the other hand, as interest towards tackling complex social issues through design has grown, also critique has emerged towards its applicability in the field of social innovation. This Master’s Thesis examines the competences of design when tackling complex social issues, and the challenges that a designer might encounter when approaching a complex social issue within a short-term design project. The topic was studied from a service design perspective, and investigated through a literature review and a case study conducted in the public sector context. The literature review briefly presents the history of design dealing with social issues. Furthermore, it introduces the concept of service design and its potential when working with complex societal issues. Lastly, it discusses the role of service design particularly in the public sector and the health care context, to introduce the context of the case study. A case study was conducted in order to gain empirical insights into the challenges and possibilities for applying service design into a social issue. It was conducted in Etelä-Kymenlaakso Vocational College, Ekami, focusing on the role of vocational student welfare in preventing social exclusion of the youth. In addition to the empirical insights, findings from the case provided understanding of the lives of the vocational students, and suggestions for improving the student welfare in Ekami. As a result, this thesis identified a number of challenges for approaching a complex social issue within a short-term design project, in order to increase understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of service design in the particular co, Muotoilijat ovat yhä suuremmassa määrin työskennelleet yhteiskunnallisten aiheiden parissa, ja etsineet muotoilun keinoin ratkaisuja monimutkaisiin haasteisiin kuten väestön ikääntymiseen, kroonisiin sairauksiin ja syrjäytymisen ehkäisyyn. Muotoilun käyttö yhteiskunnallisten haasteiden ratkomisessa onkin osoittautunut lupaavaksi varsinkin sen kokonaisvaltaisen ja ihmislähtöisen lähestymistavan vuoksi. Toisaalta samalla, kun kiinnostus yhteiskunnallisten aiheiden lähestymiseen muotoilun keinoin on kasvanut, on muotoilun käyttö yhteiskunnallisten aiheiden ratkomisessa saanut osakseen myös kritiikkiä ja epäilyksiä. Tämä opinnäytetyö tutkii muotoilun kykyä sosiaalisten ongelmien ratkomisessa ja haasteita, joita muotoilija voi kohdata lähestyessään yhteiskunnallista ja monimutkaista aihetta lyhyen suunnitteluprojektin avulla. Aihetta on tutkittu palvelumuotoilun näkökulmasta, ja se perustuu kirjallisuuskatsaukseen ja case-tutkimukseen julkisella sektorilla. Kirjallisuusosio antaa tiivistetyn katsauksen muotoilun käytön historiasta yhteiskunnallisten aiheiden parissa. Lisäksi se esittelee lyhyesti palvelumuotoilun lähestymistapana ja pohtii muotoilun hyödyntämisen mahdollisuuksia sosiaalisten ongelmien ratkomisessa. Uusi opetussuunnitelma painottaa oppilaan osallisuuden tärkeyttä koulun toiminnan suunnittelussa ja kehittämisessä. Siksi tämän opinnäytteen tavoitteena oli toisaalta muotoilla suunnittelupeli yläkoululle, toisaalta tarkastella kouluyhteisön osallisuuteen ja sen luomaan kouluhyvinvointiin liittyviä kysymyksiä. Opinnäyte on osa ’Meidän koulu muotoilee’ –hanketta, joka tehtiin yhteistyössä Opetushallituksen ja kolmen yläkoulun kanssa. Siinä tarkastellaan suomalaisten nykykoulujen osallisuuden tilannetta, opetussuunnitelman tuomaa murrosta ja tulevaisuusnäkymää. Lisäksi tutkitaan, miten yhteissuunnittelun ja suunnittelupelien avulla voidaan luoda innostusta koulun toiminnan suunnitteluun ja kehittämiseen. Prosessin aikana muotoiltiin suunnittelupeli, jolla pelaajat kehittävät kouluhyvinvointia parantavia ratkaisuja. Pelillä tuetaan pelaajien voimaantumisen tunnetta, sitoutumista kouluyhteisöön sekä suunnittelutaitojen kehittymistä. Suunnittelupelistä muodostui kuusiosainen pelikokonaisuus, jossa edetään suunnitteluprosessin alkuvaiheiden mukaisesti. Pelissä pelaajat havainnoivat, määrittelevät, ideoivat, valitsevat idean, konseptoivat ja luovat konseptille toteutussuunnitelman. Suunnittelupeliä pelattiin kolmessa yläkoulussa syksyn 2016 aikana oppilaiden ja opettajien kanssa yhden koulupäivän ajan. Jokaiseen suunnittelupelipäivään osallistui yhteensä kymmenen pelaajaa, joista opettajia oli kahdesta neljään. Jokaisen yhteissuunnittelun jälkeen peliä kehitettiin palautteen ja havaintojen perusteella vastaamaan paremmin tavoitteita. Opinnäytteen löydökset koskevat aikuisten ja lasten yhteistoiminnallisuutta. Yhteistoiminnallisuus tuntui toimivan parhaiten viiden hengen ryhmässä, kun pelaajina oli oppilaita eri luokka-asteilta ja kaksi opettajaa. Kun ryhmässä oli yksi opettaja, hän vaikutti jäävän enemmän valvojaksi kuin tasavertaiseksi pelaajaksi. Lisäksi on kiinnitettävä huomiota pelaajien vapaaehtoisuuteen, session kestoon, ohjeistuksen antamiseen sekä jälkitoimenpiteis, The new Finnish National Curriculum highlights the importance of the student’s participation in designing and developing their school’s practices. Thus the objectives of this thesis are to design a design game for a middle school and study the questions about the participation and wellbeing of the school community. This thesis is part of ‘Meidän koulu muotoilee’ –project, which was made in collaboration with Finnish National Agency for Education and three middle schools. It studies the situation of participation in Finnish education, the transitioning to the new Finnish National Curriculum, and the future views. The thesis also examines how co-designing and design games can create excitement to design and develop practices in the school. The design game was designed to help players to develop solutions to improve their school wellbeing. The game supports players’ empowerment, engagement, and development of their design skills. The design game is divided into six parts, which follow the first steps of the design process. During the game, players observe, analyze, ideate, choose an idea, and create a concept and an implementation plan for it. In the Fall 2016 the design game was played in three middle schools with pupils and teachers during one school day. In each day there were ten participants of which two to four were teachers. After every co-design session the design game was developed based on the feedback and observations to meet the objectives of the thesis. The findings of the thesis are about the shared decision-making of pupils and teachers. The cooperation seemed to work best with a group of five persons, when there are two teachers and the pupils are from different grades. When there was only one teacher in a group, she is more likely to become to a supervisor than a fellow player. Using design games at Participatory Design (PD) events is well acknowledged as a fruitful way of staging participation. As PD researchers, we have many such experiences, and we have argued that design games connect participants and promote equalizing power relations. However, in this paper, we will (self) critically re-connect and reflect on how people (humans) and materials (non-humans) continually participate and intertwine in various power relations in design game situations. The analysis is of detailed situated actions with one of our recent games, UrbanTransition. Core concepts mainly from Bruno Latour’s work on Actor-Network-Theory are applied. The aim is to take design games seriously by e.g. exploring how assemblages of humans and non-humans are intertwined in tacitly-but-tactically staging participa- tion, and opening up for or hindering negotiations and decision-making, thus starting to relate research on various PD techniques and power issues more directly.

Collaboration which has taken place in these projects have been done with the methods which are from the field of service design. I selected this topic partly because I have background in healthcare as a nurse. My intention has been to combine my profession as a designer and my background in healthcare in this thesis. My thesis is focusing on Aalto University collaboration projects in healthcare and the ones which are explored in ATLAS project. ATLAS project explores different University collaboration projects and aims to map the co-design methods which have been used in these projects. Along this frame my thesis focuses on the Palvelupolku project with Helsinki city which focused on service networks for caregivers in Lauttasaari, service design in Tampere University hospital building project and Wellbeing 365 student project in the context of psychiatric care, which took place during World design Capital year. I collected background information about projects from design in healthcare in my literature review focusing especially on projects in the field of service design. Through the information which I received from these projects I started to deepen my knowledge by doing interviews to designers and professionals in healthcare and public sector who has been involved in the projects I focused. This thesis introduces a participatory and innovative design approach, more specifically the Creative Corner co-design method. The intent of the thesis is firstly to present the invented method. Secondly this thesis analyses the method and discusses the findings, such as the characteristics and attributes that are particularly necessary to be addressed, to support the participants as well as the designers in the creation of a pleasurable co-design experience. The Creative corner method was invented to inspire people to co-design. Further the method was thought to aid in eliciting and collecting valuable knowledge owned by the collaborating persons. The thesis is based on the conducted co-design activities in the suburb 2072 project, which was part of the Aalto University 365wellbeing project and World Design Capital 2012 city of Helsinki initiative. The aim of the project, was to initiate ways of improving the well being factor in the context of the future suburb of Mellunkylä district of Helsinki. Local inhabitants were thus involved in the design process to co-create and vision about their future local living environment. Finally, the outcome of the project formulated into optimistic trend forecasts and a Scenario, imagining the suburban future.
