This guide presents the 1990 update of the National Association for Girls & Women in Sport (NAGWS) interscholastic and collegiate volleyball rules. It includes the official U.S. volleyball rules and a summary of rule changes, definitions of skills and fouls, and a summary of penalties. Officiating techniques and mechanics are covered with a summary of changes in techniques of officiating, mechanics of officiating volleyball, official hand signals, and instructions for use of the official volleyball scoresheet. Other sections of the guide provide a set of study questions, information on NAGWS/ABO services, and the 1990 championship results. (JD)

This book, which is primarily for secondary physical education teachers, presents a sequential approach to teaching skills that are essential to eight sports. The activities and lead-up games included in the book put beginning students directly into game-like situations where they can practice skills. Each chapter begins with a background of the sport from the perspective of the physical educator, followed by a list of progressions covered in the chapter. Each sequential progression for teaching the sport includes the progression's goal and orientation as well as a description of the activity and ways to further challenge students. Part 1, "The Progressions Framework," includes (1) "The Concept of Progressions, which offers real-life examples demonstrating the benefits of using lead-up games and activities to teach students in a way that results in quicker learning, and (2) "Maximizing Potential for Successful Progressions, which offers practical teaching tips for implementing progressions effectively. Part 2, "Progressions for Individual Sports," focuses on (3) "Badminton," (4) "Golf," and (5) "Tennis." Part 3, "Progressions for Team Sports," includes (6) "Basketball," (7) "Flag Football," (8) "Slow-Pitch Softball," (9) "Volleyball," and (10) "Soccer." (Chapters contain references.) (SM)

The widespread interest in sports in our culture provides an excellent opportunity to catch students' attention in mathematics and statistics classes. One mathematically interesting aspect of volleyball, which can be used to motivate students, is the scoring system. (MM)

This paper presents a systematic progression of small-sided games within two traditional sports units (soccer and volleyball). Developmentally appropriate guidelines encourage teachers at all levels to incorporate small-sided games (2v2, 3v3, and 4v4). Advantages of small-sided games include: allowing students numerous practice opportunities; keeping students active and involved in game play; decreasing complexity of games, thus increasing student success; allowing for ability groupings; and making assessment easier. Small-sided games need a systematic progression of activities that have a clear lesson focus. If structured correctly, small-sided games can provide many of the progressions that are often missing links in planning. One of the best small-sided game approaches to invasion or goal oriented sports is the grid system. A typical grid system for soccer is included, noting hints for more advanced concepts. In volleyball, students need to be able to control the ball in order to begin playing. A small-sided approach to volleyball begins with the forearm pass, with students in groups of three on either side of the net. The paper explains setup of the game and describes an excellent variation of the basic game entitled King/Queen of the Court. (SM)

This guide is part of a series published by the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport. It contains 16 articles written on various aspects of volleyball, such as (1) volleyball visual aids, (2) a volleyball bibliography, (3) training for volleyball, (4) key visual cues in volleyball, (5) basic agility for beginners, and (6) solving problems in volleyball. It also includes official volleyball playing rules for girls and women, as well as suggested modifications for younger players, clarification of rule changes for 1975-77, rule interpretations, questions and answers, and an index to official rules. There is also a section which presents a statement of the philosophy of the affiliated Boards of Officials, standards for officials ratings, volleyball study questions, and techniques for officiating volleyball. Suggestions and guidelines for establishing rules for co-recreational intramural activities are presented. These rules are not intended as a precedent or a national standard--they are ideas for adapting standardized rules for men's and women's sports to meet the needs, demands, and characteristics of co-recreational sports. Eleven different college-level activities are described along with suggestions for modification of college-level sports for elementary and secondary levels. Rules are presented for basketball, ice broomball, flag football, hoop hockey, innertube waterpolo, slow pitch softball, soccer, tug championships, frisbee, and volleyball. (MM)

The activities and terminology used in this course of study are intended to establish a more uniform and meaningful approach to the teaching of sports skills to elementary school children in the Montgomery County Public Schools. Areas of activity concentration specifically relate to soccer, volleyball, softball, and track and field. A sequential presentation of actual exercises and drills for each different type of skill is given. Distinctions are made between the objectives of individual sports in terms of desired psychomotor developmental effects, and safety notes for the supervision of each activity are included. This book is designed as a guide to coaches of girls' teams in basketball and volleyball. It offers suggestions on preparing teams, conditioning athletes, game strategies, and means for developing skills in the sports. A bibliography on each sport is included. (JD)

This National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) handbook sets forth the official rules and interpretations for women's interscholastic and collegiate volleyball for 1988-89. No major changes have been made in this issue. A check or underlining is used to denote clarifications, and/or the addition of experimental rules and some minor changes. This booklet contains the official rules and interpretations for officiating in volleyball competitions. Section 1 states the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) interscholastic and collegiate volleyball rules for 1989-90. Section 2 presents a summary and descriptions of officiating techniques and mechanics. Study questions for volleyball referees are given in section 3. Section 4 lists NAGWS and Affiliate Boards of Officials (ABO) services. The 1988 championship results are included. (JD)

This annual report compares graduation rates for scholarship athletes at Oklahoma public and private institutions of higher education to those of the student body as a whole over 3- and 6-year periods. Colleges and universities identified scholarship athletes in 11 sport categories: football, basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, wrestling, volleyball, gymnastics, golf, tennis, and "other." Data are reported for: first, within-state bachelor- or associate-degree seeking students who graduated from any public or private institution within the state; and, second, within-institution students who graduated from the institution in which they enrolled as freshmen. The study found that: (1) at comprehensive universities Caucasian scholarship students graduated at about the same rate as all Caucasian students; at regional institutions they graduated at a higher rate; and African American scholarship athletes graduated at higher rates than all African American students in all institutions; (2) both male and female scholarship students graduated at lower rates in comprehensive institutions but at higher rates at regional schools; and (3) in four sports categories--softball, track and field, volleyball, and gymnastics--scholarship athletes at comprehensive universities exceeded average rates for all students; at regional universities and two-year colleges other sports were dominant. Twenty-six tables provide within-state and within-institution data; while four tables provide graduation-rate comparisons by year of enrollment. (CH)

The National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) Volleyball Rules are based on the United States Volleyball Rules, which in turn are adopted from the rules and interpretations of the International Volleyball Federation Rules. Following a foreword by Robertha Abney, NAGWS President, the publication is organized into six sections as follows: (1) NAGWS Women's Interscholastic and Collegiate Volleyball Rules 1993-94 (preface, summary of rule changes, reference to volleyball rules, official volleyball rules 1993-94, definition of skills and fouls, summary of penalties, red and yellow card sanctions, and competitive procedures and special rules); (2) Event Management; (3) Officiating Techniques and Mechanics (summary of changes in techniques of officiating, techniques of officiating volleyball revised by the ABO principles and techniques committee, mechanics of officiating volleyball--official hand signals, and instructions for use of the official volleyball scoresheet; (4) Study Questions; (5) NAGWS/ABO Services (sources of information and services, affiliated boards of officials, standards for officials' ratings in volleyball, national rating team program, national training program, and coaches academies of the National Coaches Council); and (6) 1992 Championship Results. Explains minivolleyball to physical education teachers. Minivolleyball adapts the game and environment of volleyball to the physical capabilities of young players; it offers physical education students the chance to have fun while using the proper game skills, concepts, and strategies. (SM)

In volleyball officiating, two areas of concern are overlapping and ball-handling calls. Overlapping involves the illegal positioning of players during the contact of the serve by the server. It is imperative that officials be able to recognize overlapping violations in order also to recognize back line player violations. Consistency in ball handling is a vital concern with both officials and coaches in volleyball. Volleyball is one of the only sports to have a judgment that is so subjective. The rule is concerned with the length of contact with the ball, not the body position or the technique. In the l990s, these two areas of officiating will impact officials the most. Helpful hints for officials calling out-of-position and back row attack/block are offered, as well as key points for use in making judgments. (Author/LL)
