2. OsRAV1 Regulates Seed Vigor and Salt Tolerance During Germination in Rice.

Seed vigor is a complex trait encompassing seed germination, seedling emergence, growth, seed longevity, and stress tolerance, all are crucial for direct seeding in rice. Here, we report that the AP2/ERF transcription factor OsRAV1 (RELATED TO ABI3 AND VP1) positively regulates seed germination, vigor, and salt tolerance. Additionally, OsRAV1 was differently expressed in embryo and endosperm, with the OsRAV1 localized in the nucleus. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that OsRAV1 modulates seed vigor through plant hormone signal transduction and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis during germination. Haplotype analysis showed that rice varieties carrying Hap3 displayed enhanced salt tolerance during seed germination. These findings suggest that OsRAV1 is a potential target in breeding rice varieties with high seed vigor suitable for direct seeding cultivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Although forensic pathology age estimation of a wound is difficult, it can help reconstruct murder scenes and identify potential culprits. Forensic specialists usually focus on two aspects when evaluating wound life and determining how long ago the wound occurred. Recent developments in forensic techniques, particularly in high-throughput analyses, have allowed for the simultaneous evaluation of several markers and molecular and cellular levels of material analysis. Aim: To evaluate valuable additional information offered by each marker, summarize recent literature, and offer an update on wound-age estimation in forensic pathology. With the intention of providingsome insight for future research, prospects for evaluating wound age in forensic practice are finally examined. Conclusions: Although forensic pathologists find it difficult to determine the age of wounds, doing so can help reconstruct crime scenes and help apprehend suspects. In circumstances where several traumas are sustained by various offenders, forensic pathologists must determine the chronology and sequence of injuries because the severity of an injury usually determines the severity of punishment. Wound tracing, photographic recording (including image analysis), biophysical approaches, and/or invasive protocols requiring wound biopsies are examples of protocols that can be used to do the assessment. We give a summary of some of the most frequently required and utilized methods in this article: (a) Preclinical and animal models, such as those involving incisions, excisions, burns, and damaged wounds; (b) techniques for assessing the rate of healing, image-based wound analysis, biophysical evaluation, histological, immunological, and biochemical assays; and techniques for assessing the healing progression. Mainstream and alternative nutrition doctrines have crucially shaped our understanding of the vital aspects of and forces in human nutrition. Drawing upon a diverse array of sources, this article delves into cultural, social, and scientific conceptions of vital nutrition and how they evolved in relation to the Finnish obesity discourse from the 1950s to the 1970s. The Association to Combat Obesity (ACO), which brought together nutrition scientists, food faddists and laypeople, was the driving force of these debates. In the context of this article, food was perceived to influence the vitality of individuals and nations through its effect on body weight. Obese bodies seemed to conflict with both utopian visions of bodily transcendence and the ideals of wellbeing in modern health sciences. This work highlights the ideological continuities between interwar and postwar nutrition debates as well as the persistent tensions between scientific advancements and alternative nutrition philosophies. They have molded the conceptions of vitality and attitudes towards obesity. Concludingly, we suggest that the social responses to obesity have been influenced by the condition's perceived adverse relationship to vitality, in which fat has acted as a persistent reminder of corporeality, death, and decay. Seed vigor significantly affects peanut breeding and agricultural yield by influencing seed germination and seedling growth and development. Traditional vigor testing methods are inadequate for modern high-throughput assays. Although hyperspectral technology shows potential for monitoring various crop traits, its application in predicting peanut seed vigor is still limited. This study developed and validated a method that combines hyperspectral technology with genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to achieve high-throughput detection of seed vigor and identify related functional genes. Hyperspectral phenotyping data and physiological indices from different peanut seed populations were used as input data to construct models using machine learning regression algorithms to accurately monitor changes in vigor. Model-predicted phenotypic data from 191 peanut varieties were used in GWAS, gene-based association studies, and haplotype analyses to screen for functional genes. Real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (qPCR) was used to analyze the expression of functional genes in three high-vigor and three low-vigor germplasms. The results indicated that the random forest and support vector machine models provided effective phenotypic data. We identified Arahy.VMLN7L and Arahy.7XWF6F, with Arahy.VMLN7L negatively regulating seed vigor and Arahy.7XWF6F positively regulating it, suggesting distinct regulatory mechanisms. This study confirms that GWAS based on hyperspectral phenotyping reveals genetic relationships in seed vigor levels, offering novel insights and directions for future peanut breeding, accelerating genetic improvements, and boosting agricultural yields. Authentic leaders display an exceptional level of integrity and honesty, a high level of awareness and responsibility as well as a commitment to achieving their goals; as a result, they develop more trusting relationships with their employees, which could be translated into many positive outcomes, such as enhancing the ability to thrive at work. The present study aims to determine the role of authentic leadership´s (AL's) four dimensions (self-awareness, relational transparency, balanced processing, and internalized moral perspective) in fostering an environment that offers workers the opportunity to do well, including in terms of two related elements (vitality and learning). An online questionnaire was conducted to collect data from a sample of 402 participants from the information technology (IT) industry in Australia. The study used WarpPLS software to analyze the collected data by the structural equation model. According to the results, balanced processing of AL has a positive and significant effect on two aspects of thriving at work, namely vitality and learning, Moreover, the internalized moral perspective inherent in the aforementioned phenomenon affects learning. The current study is novel as it is among examples of pioneering research that employ the path model, and it uses multi-dimensional structures to examine authentic leadership and thriving at work in the workplace. Depression is a prevalent issue among older adults and can significantly impact their overall quality of life. While traditional treatments may not always be sufficient or suitable for all individuals, the potential of alternative interventions, such as mindful walking, offers a ray of hope. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of mindful walking on rumination, agility, vitality, and mindfulness in geriatric patients with depressive disorders. A prospective quasi-experimental design was employed with a purposive sample of 35 clients in the intervention group and 33 in the control group. This study utilized the Ruminative Responses Scale – Short Form (RRS-SF) and Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) to measure the primary outcome. The Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) and State-Level Version of the Subjective Vitality Scale (SVS) were used to measure the secondary outcomes. Mindful walking significantly affected vitality, mindfulness, and rumination, with effect sizes (ղ
2 = 0.168, 0.137, and 0.127), respectively. On the other hand, the intervention had a less significant effect on agility, with an effect size (ղ2 = 0.047). This study revealed that geriatric clients with depressive disorders showed more significant improvements in vitality, followed by improvement in rumination and agility. Integrating mindful walking as a part of care plans for those clients would promote their physical activity and mental well-being. • Incorporating mindful walking into the care plans of geriatric patients with depressive disorders can align with the principles of patient-centered care, promoting both physical activity and mental well-being. • Nurses should be educated and trained to guide patients in mindful walking practices. Regular monitoring of patients' progress is crucial, with nurses playing a pivotal role in tracking improvements in rumination, mindfulness, agility, and vitality and adjusting the intervention as needed. • Mindful walking could be used as a preventative measure in geriatric care. The changes in the life status of Larix gmelinii along the gradient of urbanized ecotypes were considered on the basis of the population analysis and morphometric approach. L. gmelinii growing under different conditions differed in a number of size and growth characteristics of the photosynthetic activity. The highest values were found in plants growing in public gardens and on city streets under conditions of high insolation. Population analysis of L. gmelinii in an urbanized environment was carried out on the basis of quantitative parameters that characterized the growth and morphogenesis of plants (annual growth, indicators of photosynthetic activity). The determining set of characters for the vitality analysis of L. gmelinii consisted of biologically significant characters with a high degree of variability: length of shoot growth (C
V varied from 39.09 to 68.86%), weight of needles at annual growth (CV 51.81–120.52%), weight of annual shoot (CV 67.73–119.85). The vitality structure of the populations of the species in the vegetative ontogenetic state changed from depressive to equilibrium, with the population quality index changing from 0.2 to 0.333. The analysis of landscaping of the city transport highways demonstrated that local populations of L. gmelinii in the generative ontogenetic state were of a prosperous type, with the population quality index varying slightly from 0.47 to 0.49. The plasticity of the species and a high viability of L. gmelinii due to the resistance to air pollution and unpretentiousness to soil conditions support a broad application of the larch for landscaping of urban areas. Traditional network interdiction problems focus on removing vertices or edges from a network so as to disconnect or lengthen paths in the network; network diversion problems seek to remove vertices or edges to reroute flow through a designated critical vertex or edge. We introduce the all-pairs vitality maximization problem (VIMAX), in which vertex deletion attempts to maximize the amount of flow passing through a critical vertex, measured as the all-pairs vitality of the vertex. The assumption in this problem is that in a network for which the structure is known but the physical locations of vertices may not be known (e.g., a social network), locating a person or asset of interest might require the ability to detect a sufficient amount of flow (e.g., communications or financial transactions) passing through the corresponding vertex in the network. We formulate VIMAX as a mixed integer program, and show that it is NP-Hard. We compare the performance of the MIP and a simulated annealing heuristic on both real and simulated data sets and highlight the potential increase in vitality of key vertices that can be attained by subset removal. This study proposes thriving at work as a vehicle for promoting employees’ mental health and aims to investigate how restaurants’ commitment to employees’ mental health is translated into their experience of thriving and how the mechanisms vary upon employees’ self-compassion. Using the convenience sampling method, the 431 responses from full-service restaurant employees in the United States were recruited from Qualtrics. Structural equation modeling, bootstrapping analysis, and multi-group analysis were used to analyze the collected data. The results contribute to thriving literature by highlighting the role of a psychosocial safety climate as a triggering factor, employees’ psychological resource as an underlying mechanism, and the moderating effect of personal resources on the process of thriving at work. 11. How Urban Block Form Affects the Vitality of the Catering Industry: Evidence from Jinan, China.

Existing research underscores the significance of block form in fostering urban vitality. However, there is a dearth of evidence on its influence on the catering industry's vitality. Additionally, current studies investigating the correlation between block form and urban vitality have frequently neglected disparities among various types of blocks with dominant functions. We employ a multi-scale geographically weighted regression and a geographic detector to elucidate the effects of block form and the heterogeneity of blocks with dominant functions on the catering industry's vitality. Our findings suggest that the suitable block form can mitigate the catering industry's reliance on factors such as the regional population and public transportation infrastructure, to a certain degree. High-rise buildings and irregular block plans positively influence the catering industry's vitality, while the effects of block area, building density, and functional density display considerable spatial heterogeneity. Commercial blocks are most influenced by block form, whereas public service blocks are least affected. The methodology of this study can be replicated globally to guide urban planners in judiciously allocating commercial facilities, based on the varying spatial form requirements of different blocks, thereby fostering a vibrant city. 12. Intraspecific diploidization of a halophyte root fungus drives heterosis.

How organisms respond to environmental stress is a key topic in evolutionary biology. This study focused on the genomic evolution of Laburnicola rhizohalophila, a dark-septate endophytic fungus from roots of a halophyte. Chromosome-level assemblies were generated from five representative isolates from structured subpopulations. The data revealed significant genomic plasticity resulting from chromosomal polymorphisms created by fusion and fission events, known as dysploidy. Analyses of genomic features, phylogenomics, and macrosynteny have provided clear evidence for the origin of intraspecific diploid-like hybrids. Notably, one diploid phenotype stood out as an outlier and exhibited a conditional fitness advantage when exposed to a range of abiotic stresses compared with its parents. By comparing the gene expression patterns in each hybrid parent triad under the four growth conditions, the mechanisms underlying growth vigor were corroborated through an analysis of transgressively upregulated genes enriched in membrane glycerolipid biosynthesis and transmembrane transporter activity. In vitro assays suggested increased membrane integrity and lipid accumulation, as well as decreased malondialdehyde production under optimal salt conditions (0.3 M NaCl) in the hybrid. These attributes have been implicated in salinity tolerance. This study supports the notion that hybridization-induced genome doubling leads to the emergence of phenotypic innovations in an extremophilic endophyte. The dark septate endophytes prefer extreme conditions. Here, Li et al. show that diploidization-driven heterosis confers a fitness advantage to Laburnicola rhizohalophila under abiotic stresses. 13. Precision phenotyping of a barley diversity set reveals distinct drought response strategies.

Plants exhibit an array of drought responses and adaptations, where the trade-off between water loss and CO2 uptake for growth is mediated by regulation of stomatal aperture in response to soil water content (SWC), among other factors. For crop yield stability, the question is how drought timing and response patterns relate to post-drought growth resilience and vigor. We earlier identified, in a few reference varieties of barley that differed by the SWC at which transpiration was curtailed, two divergent water use strategies: water-saving ("isohydric") and water-spending ("anisohydric"). We proposed that an isohydric strategy may reduce risk from spring droughts in climates where the probability of precipitation increases during the growing season, whereas the anisohydric is consistent with environments having terminal droughts, or with those where dry periods are short and not seasonally progressive. Here, we have examined drought response physiology in an 81-line barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) diversity set that spans 20th century European breeding and identified several lines with a third, dynamic strategy. We found a strong positive correlation between vigor and transpiration, the dynamic group being highest for both. However, these lines curtailed daily transpiration at a higher SWC than the isohydric group. While the dynamic lines, particularly cv Hydrogen and Baronesse, were not the most resilient in terms of restoring initial growth rates, their strong initial vigor and high return to initial transpiration rates meant that their growth nevertheless surpassed more resilient lines during recovery from drought. Introduction: Peach (Prunus persica) has a high nutritional and economic value. However, its overgrowth can lead to yield loss. Regulating the growth of peach trees is challenging. The small auxin-up RNA (SAUR) gene family is the largest family of auxin-responsive genes, which play important roles in plant growth and development. However, members of this gene family are rarely reported in peach. Methods: In this study, we measured leaf area, chlorophyll and lignin content to detect the role of PpSAUR5 on growth through transgenic Arabidopsis. Results: PpSAUR5 responds to auxin and gibberellin, promoting and inhibiting the synthesis of gibberellin and auxin, respectively. The heterologous transformation of PpSAUR5 in Arabidopsis led to enhanced growth of leaves and siliques, lightening of leaf color, decrease in chlorophyll content, increase in lignin content, abnormalities in the floral organs, and distortion of the inflorescence axis. Transcriptome data analysis of PpSAUR5 overexpression and wild-type lines revealed 854 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). GO and KEGG analyses showed that the DEGs were primarily involved in biological processes, such as cellular processes, metabolic processes, response to stimuli, and catalytic activity. These genes were mainly enriched in pathways, such as phenylalanine biosynthesis, phytohormone signaling, and MAPK signaling. Discussion: In summary, these results suggested that PpSAUR5 might regulate tree vigor by modulating the synthesis of auxin and gibberellin. Future studies can use PpSAUR5 as a candidate gene to elucidate the potential regulatory mechanisms underlying peach tree vigor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Charnov‐Bull hypothesis is the leading explanation for the evolution of environmental sex determination (ESD), which includes temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD), the most common form of ESD. Charnov‐Bull predicts a sex‐by‐incubation temperature interaction for fitness, matching offspring sex with thermal conditions that increase parental fitness. However, there is no general explanation for how the sex‐by‐temperature interaction arises. Two competing explanations for the interaction lie in the survival to maturity hypothesis (SM) and the Trivers–Willard extension (TW). Under SM, the sex that matures later is produced under optimal incubation regimes as the late‐maturing sex accrues more mortality by maturation, while TW suggests that males are always produced under optimal incubation regimes as male mating success is more sensitive to condition (general health, vigor) than female fecundity. Chrysemys picta , SM and TW generate opposite predictions for the effect of incubation temperature on juvenile survival. We incubatedC. picta eggs under either female‐promoting temperatures (28 ± 3 °C) or male‐promoting temperatures (25 ± 3 °C), then released the hatchlings into their natal pond. We used a Bayesian capture–mark–recapture approach to follow their survival over two growing seasons. We found a 2% depression of biweekly survival in individuals incubated under the cooler temperature, providing subtle support for SM. Incubation treatments did not influence growth. Large‐scale field experiments such as this one will be necessary for understanding TSD evolution, and we underline general principles to execute such experiments successfully. 16. Effects of ultrasound and microwave treatments on oenological yeast microbiota: comparison with a flash pasteurisation.

Summary: The control of yeast biota in wine could be a challenge, as different genera could coexist with different effects on wine quality; generally, SO2 plays an important role in this context, while other approaches have been proposed. In this article, two Microwave (MW) and two Ultrasound treatments (US) were tested and compared to a flash pasteurisation on seven yeast strains (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Saccharomyces bayanus, Brettanomyces spp., Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Hanseniaspora osmophila, Zygosaccharomyces bailii, Pichia membranifaciens); viable count (viability) and yeast growth kinetic (vitality) were assessed. The treatments reduced viable count by 27%, with a higher biocidal effect of US, depending on yeast and treatment conditions; they also impaired yeast growth causing a delay, which is a significant increase of the lag phase, while the effect on the growth rate or the maximum OD attained in the steady state was less significant. In conclusion, the US generally exerted a stronger effect than MW and flash pasteurisation and Schizo. pombe and Z. bailii were the less resistant yeasts. A partial uncoupling was found between vitality and viability for Z. bailii, while in Schizo. pombe the delay in the growth was generally related to the decrease in the cell count immediately after the treatment. Background: Nanotechnology holds revolutionary potential in the field of agriculture, with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) demonstrating advantages in promoting crop growth. Enhanced photosynthetic efficiency is closely linked to improved vigor and superior quality in tea plants, complemented by the beneficial role of phyllosphere microorganisms in maintaining plant health. However, the effects of ZnO NPs on the photosynthesis of tea plants, the sprouting of new shoots, and the community of phyllosphere microorganisms have not been fully investigated. Results: This study investigated the photosynthetic physiological parameters of tea plants under the influence of ZnO NPs, the content of key photosynthetic enzymes such as RubisCO, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, transcriptomic and extensive targeted metabolomic profiles of leaves and new shoots, mineral element composition in these tissues, and the epiphytic and endophytic microbial communities within the phyllosphere. The results indicated that ZnO NPs could enhance the photosynthesis of tea plants, upregulate the expression of some genes related to photosynthesis, increase the accumulation of photosynthetic products, promote the development of new shoots, and alter the content of various mineral elements in the leaves and new shoots of tea plants. Furthermore, the application of ZnO NPs was observed to favorably influence the microbial community structure within the phyllosphere of tea plants. This shift in microbial community dynamics suggests a potential for ZnO NPs to contribute to plant health and productivity by modulating the phyllosphere microbiome. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that ZnO NPs have a positive impact on the photosynthesis of tea plants, the sprouting of new shoots, and the community of phyllosphere microorganisms, which can improve the growth condition of tea plants. These findings provide new scientific evidence for the application of ZnO NPs in sustainable agricultural development and contribute to advancing research in nanobiotechnology aimed at enhancing crop yield and quality. Background The Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) approach was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) aiming to shift the traditional focus of care based on diseases to a function- and person-centered approach, focused on maintaining and monitoring intrinsic capacity (IC). This study aimed to investigate the ability of the ICOPE screening tool to identify older people with clinically meaningful impairments in IC domains. Methods This cross-sectional analysis included 603 older adults, participants (mean age 74.7 [ SD = 8.8] years, women 59.0%) of the INSPIRE Translational (INSPIRE-T) cohort. Responses at screening were compared to results of the subsequent in-depth assessment (ie, Mini-Mental State Examination, Mini Nutritional Assessment, Short Physical Performance Battery, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and clinical investigation of vision problems) to determine its predictive capacity for impairments at the IC domains (ie, cognition, psychological, sensory (vision), vitality, and locomotion). Results The ICOPE screening items provided very high sensitivity for identifying abnormality in vision (97.2%) and varied from 42.0% to 69.6% for the other domains. High specificity (>70%) was observed for all the IC domains, except for vision (2.7%). Conclusions The ICOPE screening tool can be a useful instrument enabling the identification of older people with impairments in IC domains, but studies with different populations are needed. I have previously situated the UPIC of Iannis Xenakis, a computer music instrument of legendary intransigence, as set apart from the mainstream of electroacoustic technologies, developing its own "voice" as the utterance of "prophetic" traces: ancient, not modern. Here, I will approach the sound of the UPIC from the perspective of Robert Hatten's recent theory of "virtual agency." The sounds of the UPIC confound traditional notions of meaning in music as expressive -- in a human sense and reconfigure what Brian Kane calls the "audile techniques" of a "community of listeners." Yet the works made with this technology remain engaging and meaningful to us as music. In this paper, I will explore the idea of 'virtual agency' as extended to non-human agents, as figured by the events and appearances of the natural world, and consider the ways in which Xenakis allows us, as listeners, to engage with these "virtual agents" through their traces, evident in the graphism of the UPIC's interface. 20. Effects of needle cast diseases on the growth of a 33-year-old Douglas-fir provenance plantation in northwestern Bulgaria.

In this study, the effects of defoliation caused by fungal pathogens on the tree vitality and growth of a 33-year old Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) provenance plantation in northwestern Bulgaria was presented. The results of the conducted surveys in 2011 and 2020 showed that there were significant differences between the individual provenances of Douglas-fir concerning their susceptibility to the needle cast diseases, caused by the fungal pathogens Rhabdocline pseudotsugae and Phaeucryptopus gaeumannii. The extent of damage, expressed as the amount of Douglas-fir needles cast, varied among provenance groups in individual years. A serious degree of defoliation was assessed among all continental provenances. In 2011, all examined trees from the group of continental provenances had severe symptoms of the needle cast disease. In 71.5% of them, the defoliation of the crowns was over 25% – moderately to severely affected. The average degree of defoliation varied from 18.3% (32 Wаrm Springs) to 89.3% (55 Alamogordo). In 2020, severe defoliation was found among all continental provenances. Both fungal pathogens were found as causes of the defoliation of 64.3% of the trees. The growth indicators: average height, average diameter at breast height, average height- and diameter increment for survived provenances in 2011 (at age 24) and 2020 (at age 33) were evaluated. The loss of needles and the reduced physiological function of the trees affected their vitality in the following years. Relationships between the average current annual height and diameter increment by provenance groups for 2003–2011 and 2011–2020 were calculated. It was found that with an increase in the degree of defoliation, the height and diameter increment of the provenances decreases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Findings reveal that the vitality of shopping districts is closely linked to meeting users' needs, which fosters social sustainability. The study identifies key elements for a framework that can integrate social sustainability measures into shopping district designs. This framework aims to support stakeholders and designers in planning sustainable commercial projects in Bahrain, ensuring long-term success and vitality. Research highlights the importance of considering socio-spatial interactions in retail environments to enhance livability and user experience. By understanding these dynamics, designers can create retail districts that not only attract consumers but also contribute to the well-being and sustainability of the community. The prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) is steadily increasing not only due to rising incidence, but also due to improvements in diagnosis and treatment. Accordingly, there is growing interest in improving the quality of life (QL) of chronic patients, for the assessment of which general scales are used, as well as scales developed specifically for MS. In this work, we analyzed publications devoted to assessing the quality of life of MS patients using the nonspecific SF-36 scale for the period from 2018 to 2023. Data were assessed on all eight scales: physical functioning, role functioning, bodily pain, general health, vitality, social functioning, emotional state and mental health. The usefulness of the SF-36 questionnaire has been shown in the management of patients with MS by a general practitioner for a comprehensive assessment of QL dynamics during treatment and in planning of further treatment and rehabilitation measures. However, the ambiguity of numerous QL studies results in MS obtained using the SF-36 questionnaire requires continued research and improvement of the instrument itself.

Türkiye has recently welcomed a significant number of Syrian refugees into its cities and camps. This research hypothesizes that with access to appropriate resources, refugees can leverage their cultural backgrounds, prior professional experiences, and economic skills to enhance social integration and contribute positively to their new communities. The study focuses on the urban characteristics and sustainability of mixed streets, believed to influence social life in refugee neighborhoods, ultimately promoting social justice. The research methodology involves a literature review on sustainability and social development in mixed streets. It also includes a case study of Selçuk Street in Ankara, tracking its development since the arrival of Syrian refugees. Behavioral observations, data recording, documentation, and mapping of refugee activities are used to visualize social interactions within the street. The central question is whether urban development and the sustainability of mixed streets can effectively promote social justice and the integration of refugees into their new societies. This research provides insights for academics and urban designers, guiding future efforts to foster integration and coexistence in these evolving communities.

Seeds with good viability and vigor are key for enhancing jack bean yield. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of seed incubation on the seed viability and vigor of jack beans. The research used jack bean local variety collected from Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia. The treatment was seed priming (incubation), which consists of five incubating durations, i.e. 0, 6, 12, and 18 hours. The experiment was designed in a completely randomized design and was conducted in the glass house of the Indonesian Legume and Tubers Crop Research Institute (ILETRI) in March 2022. The growth ability of jack bean seeds begins on the fifth day and reaches its greatest potential on the eighth day under optimal conditions. The control treatment showed an FGP of 100%. The seed viability and vigor decrease as priming increases. The highest SGI was obtained in the control treatment. The seed viability has a strong correlation with seed vigor; thus the seed viability test can still be used to predict seed vigor in the field. The seed priming using the incubation technique (seed conditioning) has no effect on the seed viability and vigor of jack bean seeds as well as on the seedling morphology. Thus, seed priming on high vigor jack bean seeds is not recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explored the current situation and challenges facing the preservation of the Lembak language among the Lembak ethnic group in Bengkulu City. With globalization and modernization, there were concerns about keeping indigenous languages like Lembak alive, especially with the influence of dominant languages. The study aimed to evaluate the vitality of the Lembak language, identify factors contributing to its preservation or decline, and provide recommendations for its sustained maintenance amid the continuously changing societal dynamics. Employing a mixed-method approach, the methodology encompassed cluster sampling for a survey comprising 210 respondents drawn from seven neighborhoods across three districts in Bengkulu City, alongside purposive sampling for interviews involving 36 respondents from diverse demographic strata encompassing varying age groups and occupational backgrounds, including parents, teachers, and students, all of whom were native Lembak speakers. Findings revealed an average vitality index of 0.38 for the Lembak language, signifying its endangered status. While the language remained prevalent among older age groups limited in their community, its usage notably declined among younger generations, partially due to language contact and a preference for dominant languages. This situation is exacerbated by the lack of formal support and promotion from the government, absence of official backing, insufficient formal teaching materials, minimal language documentation, and the necessity for the Lembak language to adapt to the new challenges of the digital era to remain relevant and develop.To ensure the Lembak language survives, it was suggested to raise awareness, improve education, and gain support from the government and other groups.

The Mediterranean diet is considered a healthy eating pattern. It has been shown to improve people’s quality of life. When a person suffers injuries, their quality of life suffers. This research aims to accomplish the following: (a) to study the differences in the effect of the health-related quality of life on injuries according to the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet, (b) to analyse the existing differences in the variables that make up the health-related quality of life according to the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and (c) to analyse the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet according to whether the participants have suffered any injury. The study was descriptive, cross-sectional, and exploratory in a sample of 556 physical education students. The PREDIMED questionnaire, the SF-36 questionnaire, and a self-administered questionnaire were used. The results showed that high adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with higher quality of life and lower injury rates. It was also observed that high adherence to the Mediterranean diet improved the effect of the quality of life on injuries. In conclusion, the Mediterranean diet is beneficial for the quality of life of young university students.

Background and purpose: Aging is said to be a special pattern of natural changes in life that occurs as people age With increasing age, the elderly suffer from several problems, including a decrease in hope, happiness, and self-esteem, which may affect self-care, especially nutrition. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the relationship between nutrition and self-esteem and happiness of the elderly Materials and methods: The present study was a descriptive-analytical study of the correlation type, and following the ethical standards and obtaining informed consent from the company. The research began Research sampling in this study was by multi-stage method (proportional and simple random). First, among the 18 health centers of Amel city, 7 centers were randomly selected, then again, by simple random and lottery method from among the target population (elderly people), until reaching the desired volume of the study, in 1401 became Simple random sampling was done by preparing a list of people eligible for the study in the selected health care center, then we selected the required number of samples by lottery. The inclusion criteria included being over 60 years old, living in Amel City, the absence of problems such as acute mental disability, the absence of cognitive impairment (using AMT, Alzheimer's, and cancer), and the ability to communicate. Non-cooperation during the implementation of the study was considered as an exit criterion. The tools used included demographic questionnaires, cognitive status assessment, elderly depression, happiness, self-esteem, and instrumental activities. The data were analyzed with descriptive (frequency, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential (focal correlation and parameter estimates) tests. Results: The results showed that the average age of the participants (60 to 81 years) was equal to 65.92±4.64 and the average body mass index of the participants was 23.75±2.54. 14% of the elderly were underweight and 33% were overweight. 12% were at risk of malnutrition. Most of the elderly had high happiness (99%) and high self-esteem (59%). The correlation coefficient of happiness and self-esteem is 0.378. As a result, in this study, nutrition had no significant relationship with the self-esteem and happiness of the elderly. Also, the results showed that the happiness and self-esteem of the elderly had a significant positive relationship with each other(P0.050, there is no relationship between the self-esteem of the elderly and the total score of the supplementary examination and nutrition. According to the value of P0.05). In other components of self-esteem, there is a statistically significant relationship with happiness(P0.050 Conclusion: This research was a descriptive-analytical correlation study. The results of this study showed that there is a relationship between happiness and self-esteem of the elderly. However, there was no statistically significant relationship between self-esteem and nutrition of the elderly. In general, according to the results of this research, it is suggested to pay attention to the role of general self-esteem, social self-esteem, and occupational self-esteem in the happiness of the elderly. Considering the expansion of the elderly population in Iran and the importance of paying attention to the physical and mental health of the elderly, the results of this research can be useful for planning to improve the capabilities of the elderly.

Osmia solitary bees are important pollinators of various crops worldwide. Refrigeration has been widely used to synchronize the emergence time of Osmia species from cocoons with the blooming time of different crops, but the fitness of Osmia after refrigeration remains unknown. Here, the effects of long‐term refrigeration at 0 °C on the vitality, flight ability, and metabolism of Osmia excavata, which is known as the "king of pollination" in China, were studied. The survival rate (>90% before 120 d), weight loss rate (<15% after 170 d), and mean flight speed of O. excavata were not greatly affected after long‐term refrigeration. The content of fats, which have antifreeze and energy storage properties, was not significantly altered in O. excavata before 130 d of refrigeration, which might explain why the survival rates and flight speed of O. excavata remained high after long‐term refrigeration. However, the flight duration and distance decreased significantly (P < 0.05), and both were positively correlated with the reduced trehalose levels in O. excavata (r = [+0.69] – [+0.71]; P < 0.05). Overall, these findings indicate that the pollination potential of O. excavata for various crops with different flowering periods is high after long‐term refrigeration; however, long‐term refrigeration may decrease pollination efficiency. The individual and population parameters of the lady orchid Orchis purpurea Huds. (Orchidaceae) under various growing conditions are compared. The ontogenetic type of cenopopulations, age, efficiency, recovery indices, vitality of individuals, and plasticity index are determined. The largest number of plants is noted in forest communities. The demographic and morphological parameters differ nonsignificantly. Slight fluctuations in the vitality of individuals are noted depending on the habitat and the conditions of the growing season. The pollination success of plants in steppe biotopes is much higher than that in forest biotopes: the average fruit set in steppe biotopes was 39.63%, while in forest biotopes it was 4.97–5.84%. However, it did not affect reproductive success, the main indicator of which is the presence of new generations of plants: in all cenopopulations studied, a high proportion of individuals of the pregenerative period was noted. It is established that O. purpurea has a wide ecological amplitude and high adaptability to various conditions. The cork oak "Quercus suber L." is one of the most important forest trees in the world, especially in the Mediterranean Basin, due to its high environmental, socioeconomic, and landscape value throughout the year. In general, these trees face particular problems that affect their germination, growth, survival, and the other biotic and abiotic causes that affect natural regrowth. Thus, the most important of these problems is the annual irregularity in tree seed production. For this reason, The storage problems of this species are of concern to managers, who are using new alternative techniques to deal with the problem of the irregular annual production of oak seeds and to preserve them for as long as possible. The present work aimed to evaluate the effect of storing cork oak Quercus suber L. seeds at different temperatures and for different periods of up to 300 days on their vitality and ability to germinate. For this, the seeds were subjected to four storage parameters at four temperature levels: - 0.5°C, -1°C, +4°C with thermotherapy, and +4°C without thermotherapy as a control from January 2019 to September 2019. Analysis of the obtained results showed that the treatments studied significantly affected the measured parameters. After 30 and 60 days, the results of the 4 treatments concluded that the fourth storage treatment (storage of seeds directly at +4°C) presented a good performance in terms of the length of the seedlings, which was high (52.45 cm), the production of seedlings with an average diameter of 5.28 mm, and the important germination percentage (88.57%), unlike the other treatments. After a storage period of 270 days, the fourth storage treatment, the control, stored at 4°C without thermotherapy, still showed the best growth and development. This treatment also achieved a higher germination percentage (17.14%), plant height (11.33cm), and average diameter (1.85 mm) than the other treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mental and social well-being of urban residents is greatly influenced by their exposure to vibrant and engaging physical environments and face-to-face interactions. The development of walkways is considered a crucial step toward achieving these goals. This research focused on evaluating the vitality indicators of Jahānshahr Walkway in Karaj City. The research methodology was descriptive-analytical, utilizing observational data collected through a checklist, as well as survey data obtained from a questionnaire. The sample population consisted of 270 randomly selected walkway users. Data analysis was conducted using EXCEL software, employing an innovative model. The findings revealed that the assessed walkway received a score of 4.666 (on a scale of 0-5), indicating a good level of vitality. However, Jahānshahr Walkway was lacking in certain social indicators, such as incorporation of cultural symbols, organization of festivals and rituals to attract people to the space, and presence of elements that appealed to children. On the other hand, its strengths lay in indicators, such as availability of recreational and leisure activities, diversity of leisure time options, and vibrancy of the walkway's surroundings, which were predominantly linked to the economic dimension. To enhance the vitality of the space, it is recommended to focus on preserving and expanding green areas catering to the needs of children, developing cultural identity and symbols, improving sanitation facilities, and ensuring convenient access to banks and services. This study aimed to investigate the association of the IC composite measure and its 5 domains with hospitalization in the previous year and length of hospital stay. Methods: We conducted cross-sectional analyses using data from a representative sample of community-dwelling adults (≥ 65 years). We assessed the IC domains (vitality, locomotor, cognitive, sensory, and psychological) using validated self-reported information and performance tests. We calculated standardized estimated scores (z scores) for IC composite measure and domains and conducted multivariate logistic and ordinal regressions. The primary outcomes were hospitalizations in the previous year and length of hospital stay. Results: In a sample of 5354 participants (mean age = 73 ± 6 years), we found that participants with high IC composite z scores were less likely to have experienced hospitalization in the previous year (OR = 0.51; 95% CI = 0.44–0.58). Among those who were hospitalized, high IC scores were associated with short stays (OR = 0.87; 95% CI = 0.80–0.95). Cognitive and psychological domains were associated with hospitalizations, and the locomotor domain was related to length of hospital stay. The vitality domain was associated with both outcomes. Conclusion: IC as a composite measure was associated with previous hospitalizations and length of stay. Introduction: The COVID-19 crisis exerts a marked impact on the quality of life of individuals experiencing grief. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of life quality improvement treatment and emotion-focused therapy on the cognitive flexibility and vitality of individuals affected by grief due to COVID-19. Material & Methods: This research employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with two experimental groups and one control group. In 2021, 30 individuals affected by grief were purposefully selected and randomly assigned to three groups: life quality improvement treatment, emotion-focused therapy, and the control group. Data were collected using the Cognitive Flexibility Questionnaire and the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire. The first experimental group received emotion-focused therapy (Leslie Greenberg, 2012), while the second experimental group received life quality improvement treatment (Fresch, 2006). Data were analyzed in SPSS software (version 27) using analysis of covariance. Results: The results demonstrated that both emotion-focused therapy and therapy based on improving quality of life had a positive effect on behavioral flexibility and social vitality, and the effectiveness of therapy based on improving quality of life on the vitality of bereaved people was more than emotion-focused therapy. Discussion & Conclusion: Considering the effectiveness of both treatments on the flexibility of action and the effectiveness of the treatment to improve the quality of life and vitality of people with grief, psychotherapists can benefit from both two treatments to improve the quality of life and vitality of people with the experience of grief to take. In plants, the ubiquitin (Ub)-26S proteasome system (UPS) regulates numerous biological functions by selectively targeting proteins for ubiquitylation and degradation. However, the regulation of Ub itself on plant growth and development remains unclear. To demonstrate a possible impact of Ub supply, as seen in animals and flies, we carefully analyzed the growth and developmental phenotypes of two different poly-Ub (UBQ) gene overexpression plants of Arabidopsis thaliana. One is transformed with hexa-6His-UBQ (designated 6HU), driven by the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter, while the other expresses hexa-6His-TEV-UBQ (designated 6HTU), driven by the endogenous promoter of UBQ10. We discovered that 6HU and 6HTU had contrasting seed yields. Compared to wildtype (WT), the former exhibited a reduced seed yield, while the latter showed an increased seed production that was attributed to enhanced growth vigor and an elevated silique number per plant. However, reduced seed sizes were common in both 6HU and 6HTU. Differences in the activity and size of the 26S proteasome assemblies in the two transgenic plants were also notable in comparison with WT, suggestive of a contributory role of UBQ expression in proteasome assembly and function. Collectively, our findings demonstrated that exogenous expression of recombinant Ub may optimize plant growth and development by influencing the UPS activities via structural variance, expression patterns, and abundance of free Ub supply. Background: A common condition known as nurse burnout is characterized by decreased vitality of nurses, leading to emotional exhaustion, decreased motivation, and feelings of dissatisfaction. This can lead to decreased effectiveness in their profession. Although reducing fatigue is commonly associated with leadership style, it is unclear whether some leadership philosophies are more successful than others. This study designed to explore the link between dimensions of burnout dimension and leadership styles among nurses at Karbala City Teaching Hospitals. Methods: A correlational descriptive study was conducted convenience sample method of 324 nurses in Karbala City, Iraq. Data collection was performed using a self-administer questionnaire. The first part contained items on participants' characteristics, the second part was perceived leadership styles in the health sector questionnaire and the third part was the Maslach Burnout Syndrome Inventory questionnaire. Results: Most participants were relatively young, with the majority (75%) between 20 and 35 years old, Females comprised a larger portion of the sample (nearly 70%) than males. Results indicated a particular correlation between leadership style and lower burnout among nurses. Conclusion: Leadership style has a relationship to high or low burnout depending on the leadership style followed by the nursing officer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Despite being an important determinant of health outcomes, measures of structural racism are lacking in studies examining the relationship between the social determinants of health (SDOH) and overdose deaths. The aim of this study is to examine the association between per capita revenue generated from fines and forfeitures, a novel measure of structural racism, and other SDOH with county-level overdose deaths from 2017–2020. Methods: This longitudinal analysis of 2,846 counties from 2017–2020 used bivariate and multivariate Generalized Estimating Equations models to estimate associations between county overdose mortality rates and SDOH characteristics, including the fines and forfeitures measure. Results: In our multivariate model, higher per capita fine and forfeiture revenue (5.76; CI: 4.76, 6.78), households receiving food stamps (1.15; CI: 0.77, 1.53), residents that are veterans (1.07; CI: 0.52, 1.63), substance use treatment availability (4.69; CI: 3.03, 6.33) and lower population density (-0.002; CI: -0.004, -0.001) and percent of Black residents (-0.7'; CI: -1.01, -0.42) were significantly associated with higher overdose death rates. There was a significant additive interaction between the fines and forfeitures measure (0.10; CI: 0.03, 0.17) and the percent of Black residents. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that structural racism, along with other SDOH, is associated with overdose deaths. Future research should focus on connecting individual-level data on fines and forfeitures to overdose deaths and other health outcomes, include measures of justice-related fines, such as court fees, and assess whether interventions aimed at increasing economic vitality in disadvantaged communities impact overdose deaths in a meaningful way. In the current study, using self-determination theory as a theoretical framework, we used multiple real-time assessments to investigate the dichotomous relationship between autonomy need satisfaction and frustration, and how these constituents underpin student functioning among higher education students during a learning activity. In total, 124 STEM students were recruited from mandatory calculus seminars. The session lasted 90 minutes, with three fixed time measurements. Results indicate that satisfaction of the need for autonomy positively predicted vitality, situational interest, and perceived value, whereas autonomy need frustration was negatively related to the same outcome variables. Further, our results indicate fluctuations in both autonomy need satisfaction and need frustration during the calculus seminar. The results highlight well-differentiated effects of satisfaction and frustration of autonomy need and show that perceived need satisfaction and frustration constitute principal components in predicting student functioning. Aim: Although the maintenance and improvement of quality of life (QoL) through holistic care are important in geriatric medical care, care priorities might differ depending on three essential aspects of QoL: the quality of daily living, satisfaction and happiness from birth to death, and human vitality, which are "Seikatsu," "Jinsei," "Seimei" in Japanese, respectively. We aimed to clarify these priorities in terms of medical care and examined how the definitions of QoL affected these priorities' rankings. Methods: This cross‐sectional study involved community‐dwelling older adults aged ≥65 years living in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The number of participants was 1550 (mean age, 76.1 ± 5.8 years; 699 women [45.1%]). A self‐administered questionnaire distributed in advance was used to rank 12 items sought in medical care. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups and sent the corresponding questionnaire, which differed only in the definition of QoL. Results: The top priorities for medical care were "effective treatment of illness," "improvement of physical function," and "maintaining a high level of activity." When QoL was defined as "the quality of daily living, satisfaction and happiness from birth to death, and human vitality," participants were significantly more likely to rank QoL improvement as one of the top three items (adjusted odds ratio, 1.46; 95% confidence interval, 1.03–2.05). Conclusions: As a medical care priority, older adults desire improvement of multidimensional elements of life, including human vitality. Perennial ryegrass is the most widely grown temperate grass species globally as a source of forage (grazing, hay, silage) or for amenity use. It is a part of landscape, protects soil from water and wind erosion, enriches it with organic substances and improves its fertility. During the period 2015-2020 in the Institute of Forage crops (IFC) - Pleven a collection nursery was studied in field non-irrigated conditions on leached black soil, in block duplicate method, in 2 replications with a total of 19 accessions of perennial ryegrass, with 50 individual plants each (25 plants for forage and 25 plants - for seeds), including 14 varieties and 5 ecotypes, 10 tetraploid and 9 diploid, from Bulgaria (BG), Belgium (BE), and Romania (RO). The aim is to determine the vitality per year and longevity (after many years, more than 3-4) of perennial ryegrass collection accessions and to make a selection of the most vital and long - lasting genotypes. Scale of survival according to the International Classifier for the family Poaceae (Bukhteeva et al., 1985) was used - limiting factors of the environment are cold - winter, drought and high temperatures - summer. An autumn inventory of the individual plants no./% was carried out annually, as 25 plants per sample = 100%., and vitality classification as follows: Very Low - less than 1 to 20% of plants are left alive; Low - more than 21 to 50%; Medium - more than 51% to 70%; High - more than 71 to 90%; Very High - more than 90% of the plants are still alive. Computer statistical processing of the data (via Excel, at P = 0.05) included variance analyses. Data on vitality and longevity are characterized by: marginal values (min and max), arithmetic mean (x), standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (CV,%). Variation was considered weak, moderate, or strong at CV values, respectively: up to 10%; > 10-20%, and > 20% (Dimova and Marinkov, 1999). When grown for fodder, the local ecotypes Sokolare, Topolovgrad and Bekovi skali are the most viable by years and the longest surviving up to 5 years, with the percentage of plants alive in the fifth year being the highest for the Sokolare ecotype. Ecotype Sokolare is strongly influenced by the method of use, which is the longest-lasting and most viable when grown for fodder - 5 years and the shortest - when grown for seeds - 3 years. All diploid varieties live up to 4 years, and only the Harmoniya variety up to 5 years, with the Bulgarian varieties Harmoniya and Strandzha being the most viable and long-lasting when grown for fodder. Harvesting once a year for seeds extends the life cycle of diploid varieties up to 5 years and for the Harmoniya variety - up to 6. The Bulgarian tetraploid varieties Tetrany, Tetramis and the Belgian varieties Floris, Melpetra and Melverde are the most durable and long-lasting. One-time harvesting per year for seeds extends the life cycle of the tetraploid varieties up to 5 years, and for the Bulgarian varieties Tetrany, Tetramis and the Belgian varieties Floris, Melpetra and Melverde - up to 6. In this response to Palmer, I focus on the potential of creative spaces. In resonance with Palmer's evocative descriptions of his engagement with painting and its relation to clinical insight, I offer my parallel experience with dance. Immersive experiences in creative endeavors offer to a clinician a mode of intuitive entry into the analytic field of a given treatment. I discuss the need to facilitate, and to hold open, a space for creativity for our patients and for ourselves. Creating connects us – to our self, to others, to internal objects, to our mother-child origins and to the aesthetic pleasures of our first communications. The aesthetic capacity to keep this embodied vitality alive in the analytic relationship is the quality I conceptualize as analytic eroticism. The Mediterranean diet is considered a healthy eating pattern. It has been shown to improve people's quality of life. When a person suffers injuries, their quality of life suffers. This research aims to accomplish the following: (a) to study the differences in the effect of the health-related quality of life on injuries according to the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet, (b) to analyse the existing differences in the variables that make up the health-related quality of life according to the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and (c) to analyse the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet according to whether the participants have suffered any injury. The study was descriptive, cross-sectional, and exploratory in a sample of 556 physical education students. The PREDIMED questionnaire, the SF-36 questionnaire, and a self-administered questionnaire were used. The results showed that high adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with higher quality of life and lower injury rates. This research investigates the suitability of printed polyamide 12 (PA12) and its dyed version to support cells in bioengineering applications. For this purpose, human gingival fibroblasts (hGF06) were cultured on PA-12 scaffolds that were 3D-printed by Multi Jet Fusion (MJF). The study examined the direct cultivation of cells on MJF-printed cell culture scaffolds and the effect of leachate of PA-12 printed by MJF on the cultured cells. The article presents research on the surface treatment of PA12 material used in 3D printing and the effect of automatic staining on cell vitality and proliferation in vitro. The study presents a unique device designed exclusively for staining prints made of the biocompatible material PA12 and demonstrates the compatibility of 3D-printed polyamide 12 parts stained in the novel device with a nutrient culture medium and cells. This novel PA12 surface treatment for biomedical purposes does not affect the compatibility with the culture medium, which is essential for cell viability and proliferation. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that mitochondrial fitness and cell survival were not affected by prolonged incubation with clear or dyed PA12 3D-printed parts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
