The one-dimensional “chain” Ising model in the approximation of nearest neighbor interaction is used to describe the epitropic liquid-crystalline phase represented by a layer of orientationally ordered nonmesogen molecules near a solid wall. The effect of “interchain” interaction on the thermodynamic characteristics of the liquid crystal phase is considered. The spatial distribution and temperature dependence of the scalar order parameter are determined, as well as the isochoric heat capacity and the heat of orientational melting of the liquid crystal phase in the wall layer. The existence of a threshold intensity of the interchain interaction is established; above this threshold, the system becomes mesogenic.
