Context: In the past two decades, the so-called 4E approaches to the mind and cognition have been rapidly gaining in recognition and have become an integral part of various disciplines. Problem: Recently, however, questions have been raised as to whether, and to what degree, these different approaches actually cohere with one another. Specifically, it seems that many of them endorse mutually incompatible, perhaps even contradictory, epistemological and metaphysical presuppositions. Method: By retracing the roots of an alternative conception of mind and cognition, as propounded by Varela, Thompson & Rosch, we provide an outline of the original philosophical framework of enactivism and neurophenomenology. We focus on its three central tenets - reflexivity, subject-world co-determination, and the construal of cognition as situated, skillful and embodied action - and show how they collectively add up to a radical change in attitude towards the age-old philosophical dilemmas. Results: We show how contemporary enactivist and embodied approaches relate to the original Varelian conception, and argue that many of them, despite frequent claims to the contrary, adopt significantly less radical philosophical positions. Further, we provide some tentative suggestions as to why this dilution of the original impetus might have occurred, paying special attention to the deep-rooted disparities that span the field. Implications: It is argued that more attention should be paid to epistemological and metaphysical tenets of different proposals within the 4E movement in general and enactivism in particular. Additionally, in emphasizing the inescapable multilayeredness and contextuality of scientific knowledge, enactivism and neurophenomenology accord with pluralist accounts of science and might provide important contributions to contemporary debates in the field. Constructivist content: The epistemological odyssey, construed as a journey to find a middle way between realism and idealism, is a central tenet of anti-representationalist, non-dualist constructivist approaches aimed at avoiding age-old philosophical traps.

The multiplicity of inclusive photons has been measured on an event-by-event basis for 158 AGeV Pb induced reactions on Ni, Nb, and Pb targets. The systematics of the pseudorapidity densities at midrapidity (rho_max) and the width of the pseudorapidity distributions have been studied for varying centralities for these collisions. A power law fit to the photon yield as a function of the number of participating nucleons gives a value of 1.13+-0.03 for the exponent. The mean transverse momentum, , of photons determined from the ratio of the measured electromagnetic transverse energy and photon multiplicity, remains almost constant with increasing rho_max. Several hadronic observables have been studied in central 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions using data measured by the WA98 experiment at CERN: single negative pion and kaon production, as well as two- and three-pion interferometry. The Wiedemann-Heinz hydrodynamical model has been fitted to the pion spectrum, giving an estimate of the temperature and transverse flow velocity. Bose-Einstein correlations between two identified negative pions have been analysed as a function of kT, using two different parameterizations. The results indicate that the source does not have a strictly boost invariant expansion or spend time in a long-lived intermediate phase. A comparison between data and a hydrodynamical based simulation shows very good agreement for the radii parameters as a function of kT. The pion phase-space density at freeze-out has been measured and agrees well with the Tomasik-Heinz model. A large pion chemical potential close to the condensation limit of the pion mass seems to be excluded. The three-pion Bose-Einstein interferometry shows a substantial contribution of the genuine three-pion correlation, but not quite as large as expected for a fully chaotic and symmetric source., 24 pages including 17 figures

Fluctuations are studied by controlling the centrality of the reaction and rapidity acceptance of the detectors. - Abstract
Immune sera were produced in rabbits with living cells of an enteroinvasive O143 strain of Escherichia coli. To remove O and K antibodies, sera were absorbed with an avirulent derivative of the same strain. In the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, absorbed sera reacted specifically with only virulent Shigella strains and enteroinvasive E. coli strains of different geographical origin, regardless of species or serogroups. The investigation of 83 strains indicated complete agreement between enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results and those of the keratoconjunctivitis test. It is assumed that the absorbed immune sera reacted with a possible virulence marker antigen. This inexpensive and simple method provides an alternative to other virulence tests. It has a definite advantage for screening large number of isolates within 24 h.
