Abstract

International audience; An excess of visceral adipose tissue could be involved as a modulator of the penetrance of HFE hemochromatosis since fat mass is associated with overexpression of hepcidin and low transferrin saturation was found to be associated with being overweight in women. This study was aimed at assessing the relationship between body mass index (BMI), a surrogate marker of insulin resistance, and iron burden in HFE hemochromatosis. In all, 877 patients from a cohort of C282Y homozygotes were included in the study when BMI at diagnosis and amount of iron removed (AIR) by phlebotomy were available. No relationship between AIR and BMI was found in men, whereas 15.1% (52/345) of women with AIR

To the Editor: In Graves disease, the clinical uses of thyrotropin receptor [thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSH-R)1] antibody (TRAb) measurements have been reported in the Thyroid Guidelines of the American Thyroid Association (1). First, TRAb measurements are used to investigate the etiology of hyperthyroidism when the diagnosis is not clinically obvious; second, a declining TRAb concentration during long-term antithyroid drug therapy is suggestive of remission, although TRAb measurements can be misleading in 25% of such patients; third, TRAb is used in the follow-up of pregnant women with a history or recent onset of Graves …

Abstract

International audience; Les maladies auto-immunes thyroïdiennes se développent sur un terrain génétiquement prédisposé, selon un large éventail de présentations cliniques. Elles ont en commun l'existence d'un infiltrat lymphocytaire intrathyroïdien et celle d'autoanticorps circulants dirigés contre les constituants de la glande thyroïde. Les principaux antigènes thyroïdiens sont la thyroglobuline (Tg), la thyroperoxydase (TPO), le récepteur de l'hormone thyréostimulante (RTSH), le sodium-iodure symporteur (NIS) et la pendrine. Le dosage de ces anticorps présente de bonnes sensibilité et spécificité, mais aussi des difficultés liées à l'immunoanalyse. Cet article a été réalisé afin d'aider tout biologiste ou clinicien confronté régulièrement au choix d'un réactif ou à l'interprétation d'un résultat dans le domaine thyroïdien auto-immun.
