Rare earth elements (REE) have an essential role and growing importance in the world's economy. They are attracting interest from society, policymakers, and scientists. The rapidly growing global demand for REE in several strategic industrial and agricultural sectors led many countries to consider the (re)-opening of mining activities for REE extraction. Hence, their increasing use led to the disruption of their biogeochemical cycles with anthropic abnormalities already observed in aquatic ecosystems. Nonetheless, REE remain less studied, and their mechanisms of toxicity actions are not fully understood. As amphipods, Gammarus fossarum represent an important part of the aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblage and are generally used in ecotoxicological studies for their high ecological relevance. However, their use for the study of REE effects has been rather limited so far. The current study aims to assess the potential effects of two naturally REE-enriched sediments (N2 and B4) on G. fossarum. Effects on life history traits, behavioural and physiological responses have been evaluated. Exposing G. fossarum males for 72h to sediments N2 and B4 led to a decrease in haemolymph osmolality and locomotion while an increase in ventilatory activity was observed. Exposing G. fossarum pre-copula pairs with females at the same reproductive stage to the naturally REE-enriched sediments, for one moult cycle duration (∼30 days) showed that sediment B4 led to i) a significant uptake of REE, ii) a significant decrease in the proportion of females with oocytes and iii) a significant reduction in the total number of juveniles. The physicochemical analyses of sediments showed that B4 contains the highest amount of REE with a higher proportion of light REE. Several factors influence whether an organism remains in its local habitat. Parasites can, for example, influence host movement by impacting their behavior, physiology, and morphology. In rivers, fish that swim efficiently against the current are able to maintain their position without being displaced downstream, a behavior referred to as positive rheotaxis. We hypothesized that both the presence and number of ectoparasites on a host would affect the ability of fish to avoid downstream displacement and thus prevent them from remaining in their habitat. We used the guppy-Gyrodactylus host-ectoparasite model to test whether parasite presence and parasite load had an effect on fish rheotaxis. We quantified rheotaxis of sham-infected and parasite-infected fish in a circular flow tank in the laboratory prior to infection and 5-6 days postinfection. Both parasite-infected and sham-infected individuals expressed similar levels of positive rheotaxis prior to infection and after infection. However, with increasing parasite numbers, guppies covered less distance in the upstream direction and spent more time in slower flow zones. These results suggest that higher numbers of Gyrodactylus ectoparasites negatively influence rheotactic movements. Nanoscale defect engineering plays a crucial role in incorporating extraordinary catalytic properties in two-dimensional materials by varying the surface groups or site interactions. Herein, we synthesized high-loaded nitrogen-doped Boridene (N-Boridene (Mo 4/3 (B n N 1- n ) 2- m T z ), N-doped concentration up to 26.78 at %) nanosheets by chemical exfoliation followed by cyanamide intercalation. Three different nitrogen sites are observed in N-Boridene, wherein the site of boron vacancy substitution mainly accounts for its high chemical activity. Attractively, as a cathode for Mg-CO 2 batteries, it delivers a long-term lifetime (305 cycles), high-energy efficiency (93.6%), and ultralow overpotential (∼0.09 V) at a high current of 200 mA g -1 , which overwhelms all Mg-CO 2 batteries reported so far. Experimental and computational studies suggest that N-Boridene can remarkably change the adsorption energy of the reaction products and lower the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (*MgCO 2 → *MgCO 3 · x H 2 O), resulting in the rapid reversible formation/decomposition of new MgCO 3 ·5H 2 O products. The surging Boridene materials with defects provide substantial opportunities to develop other heterogeneous catalysts for efficient capture and converting of CO 2 .

Given the pervasiveness of violent extremism all over the globe, understanding its psychological underpinnings is key in the fight against it. According to the Significance Quest Theory and its 3N model, violent extremism (i.e., violent and deviant behavior) is a function of three elements: need, narrative, and network. In the present meta-analysis, to put into test the theory and its model, we aimed to establish the strength of the association between these three elements, as well as the quest for significance itself, and violent extremism; and investigate if these associations are influenced by methodological decisions (i.e., sampling and measurements/manipulations). A literature search was performed through electronic platforms, a call for unpublished or in-press data, and backward snowballing. Seventeen reports, comprising 42 studies, met full inclusion criteria: quantitative studies based on primary data assessing for the association of at least one of the 3Ns, or quest for significance, and violent extremism, and providing sufficient data for effect size extraction. Findings are reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses(PRISMA) guidelines. Random-effect meta-analyses rendered statistically significant pooled effect sizes in all the investigated associations. The association is strong for quest for significance, moderate for narrative and network, and low for need for significance. Subgroup analyses demonstrate that the detection of these associations is influenced by methodological decisions concerning the measurements and manipulations, but not by those concerning the sampling. In this article, the environmental sustainability of a circular economy concept applied to the management of biowaste was studied. To achieve this goal, the composting performance, compost-amended soil health, and phytotoxicity were assessed in the case of management of solid waste from a small swine slaughterhouse. Microorganisms present in a similar composting process were used as inoculums to improve the efficiency of composting. Addition of the inoculum promoted a faster and more efficient composting process than composting without the inoculum. The physical, chemical, and microbiological characteristics of soil were considered to be improved after compost application. Phytotoxicity tests in soils with and without compost amendment showed that a soil-compost mixture (90:10 and 70:30 mass ratios) was not phytotoxic to the plant species Sorghum saccharatum and Lepidium sativum , and that soil with compost showed higher plant biomass growth than that without compost amendment. The triple bottom line methodology used in this study can help in the assessment of circular economy activity in relation to the environmentally sustainable management of solid waste generated in small swine slaughterhouses.

For the first time, we report calculations of the free energies of activation of cracking and isomerization reactions of alkenes that combine several different electronic structure methods with molecular dynamics simulations. We demonstrate that the use of a high level of theory (here Random Phase Approximation-RPA) is necessary to bridge the gap between experimental and computed values. These transformations, catalyzed by zeolites and proceeding via cationic intermediates and transition states, are building blocks of many chemical transformations for valorization of long chain paraffins originating, e.g., from plastic waste, vegetable oils, Fischer-Tropsch waxes or crude oils. Compared with the free energy barriers computed at the PBE+D2 production level of theory via constrained ab initio molecular dynamics, the barriers computed at the RPA level by the application of Machine Learning thermodynamic Perturbation Theory (MLPT) show a significant decrease for isomerization reaction and an increase of a similar magnitude for cracking, yielding an unprecedented agreement with the results obtained by experiments and kinetic modeling., (© 2023 The Authors. Aims: The endodontic literature reports a lot of comparative study on endodontic instruments, concerning as well their geometry, instrumental dynamics, material, mechanical behavior or heat treatment. However, to our knowledge, no study has focused on the influence of endodontic motors on the shaping abilities of endodontic instruments. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the influence of the endodontic motors on root canal shaping instruments., Method: Dual Move (MICRO-MEGA, Besançon, France), Canal Pro CL2i (COLTENE, Alstätten, Suisse), Canal Pro Jeni Motor (COLTENE, Alstätten, Suisse), Ai Motor (WOODPECKER, Guilin, China), Wave One motor (VDW, Postfach, Munich) and Smart A (WOODPECKER, Guilin, China) were pre-clinically compared in continuous rotation and reciprocating motion on a traction/compression bench using resin blocks. Canal shaping in continuous rotation and reciprocating motion were performed with One Curve and One RECI instruments (MICRO-MEGA, Besançon, France), respectively. The penetration/removal forces, making it possible to objectify the cutting effect and screwing effect of the instruments during root canal shaping, were analyzed., Results: The results showed (i) that endodontic motors influence the mechanical behavior of endodontic instruments, (ii) that the influence of the motors is essentially felt during reciprocating motion and (iii) that the reciprocating angles influence the mechanical behavior of endodontic instruments., Conclusion: Only endodontic instruments are widely studied in literature while endodontic motors have a direct influence on root canal treatment. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the resonant properties of the memory capacity of a reservoir computer based on a semiconductor laser subjected to time-delayed filtered optoelectronic feedback. Our analysis reveals first how the memory capacity decreases sharply when the input-data clock cycle is slightly time-shifted from the time delay or its multiples. We attribute this effect to the inertial properties of the laser. We also report on the damping of the memory-capacity drop at resonance with a decrease of the virtual-node density and its broadening with the filtering properties of the optoelectronic feedback. These results are interpretated using the eigenspectrum of the reservoir obtained from a linear stability analysis. Then, we unveil an invariance in the minimum value of the memory capacity at resonance with respect to a variation of the number of nodes if the number is big enough and quantify how the filtering properties impact the system memory in and out of resonance., (© 2023 Author(s). Detailed molecular composition of solid phase extracted dissolved organic matter (SPE DOM ) collected from fractured-rock groundwater was compared to connected surface river water at two different watersheds in the unconfined chalk aquifer of Champagne in France using full scan ultrahigh resolution electrospray and photoionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), Orbitrap tandem MS (MS/MS) and 1 H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). 1 H NMR spectroscopy indicated that groundwater SPE DOM carried a higher contribution of aliphatic compounds while surface river waters SPE DOM were enriched in carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAM), acetate derivatives and oxygenated units. Furthermore, we show here that use of photoionization (APPI(+)) in aquifer studies is key, ionizing about eight times more compounds than ESI in surface river water samples, specifically targeting the dissolved organic nitrogen pool, accounting for more than 50% of the total molecular space, as well as a non-polar, more aromatic fraction; with little overlap with compounds detected by ESI(-) FT-ICR MS. On the other hand, groundwater SPE DOM samples did not show similar selectivity as less molecular diversity was observed in APPI compared to ESI. Mass-difference transformation networks (MDiNs) applied to ESI(-) and APPI(+) FT-ICR MS datasets provided an overview of the biogeochemical relationships within the aquifer, revealing chemical diversity and microbial/abiotic reactions. Finally, the combination of ESI(-) FT-ICR MS and detailed Orbitrap MS/MS analysis revealed a pool of polar, anthropogenic sulfur-containing surfactants in the groundwaters, likely originating from agricultural runoff. Introduction: This study aims to validate that haptic simulator assistance could distinguish skill levels with haptic simulation in restorative dentistry., Materials and Methods: This work was carried out with 93 first-year, 87 third-year and 44 fifth-year dental students. The promotions of first- and fifth-year dental students made one session to represent the negative and the positive controls, respectively. The third-year dental students were the studied population. Whatever the group, the maximum time for each reparation was restricted to 3 min. All students have to perform the same three exercises. The third-year dental students performed four sessions spread over the whole university year. For each test, the total score provided by the simulator was recorded and analysed., Results: The exercises are not discriminating in direct vision while the exercise in indirect vision is very interesting to distinguish the levels of the learners., Conclusion: The results underline that the exercises in indirect vision could distinguish different profiles of student having different preclinical and clinical levels, while making it possible to follow the acquisition of clinical competence., (© 2023 The Authors. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the main occupational diseases and are pathologies of multifactorial origin, with posture being one of them. This creates new human-robot collaboration situations that can modify operator behaviors and performance in their task. These changes raise questions about human-robot team performance and operator health. This study aims to understand the consequences of introducing a cobot on work performance, operator posture, and the quality of interactions. It also aims to evaluate the impact of two levels of difficulty in a dual task on these measures. For this purpose, thirty-four participants performed an assembly task in collaboration with a co-worker, either a human or a cobot with two articulated arms. In addition to this motor task, the participants had to perform an auditory task with two levels of difficulty (dual task). They were equipped with seventeen motion capture sensors. The collaborative work was filmed with a camera, and the actions of the participants and co-worker were coded based on the dichotomy of idle and activity. Interactions were coded based on time out, cooperation, and collaboration. The results showed that performance (number of products manufactured) was lower when the participant collaborated with a cobot rather than a human, with also less collaboration and activity time. However, RULA scores were lower-indicating a reduced risk of musculoskeletal disorders-during collaboration with a cobot compared to a human. Direct ink writing (DIW) belongs to extrusion-based three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques. The success of DIW process depends on well-printable ink and optimized process parameters. After ink preparation, DIW process parameters considerably affect the parts' dimensional accuracy, and process parameters optimization for dimensional accuracy of printed layers is necessary for quality control of parts in DIW. In this study, DIW process parameters were identified and divided into two categories as the parameters for printing a line and the parameter from lines to a layer. Then, a two-step method was proposed for optimizing process parameters. Step 1 was to optimize process parameters for printing a line. In Step 1, continuity and uniformity of extruded filaments and printed rectangular objects were observed in screening experiments to determine printability windows for each process parameter. Then, interaction effect tests were conducted and degree of freedom for experiments was calculated followed by orthogonal array selection for the Taguchi design. Next, main experiments of line printing based on the Taguchi method were conducted. Signal-to-noise ratio calculations and analysis of variance were performed to find the optimal combination and evaluate the significance, respectively. Step 2 was to optimize the parameter from lines to a layer. In Step 2, the average width of the printed line under optimal condition was first measured. Then, single-factor tests of rectangular object printing were conducted to find the optimal parameter from lines to a layer. Purpose: The gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota is a complex and dynamic ecosystem whose composition and function are influenced by many internal and external factors. Overall, the individual GI microbiota composition appears to be rather stable but can be influenced by extreme shifts in environmental exposures. To date, there is no systematic literature review that examines the effects of extreme environmental conditions, such as strict isolation and confinement, on the GI microbiota., Methods: We conducted a systematic review to examine the effects of isolated and confined environments on the human GI microbiota. The literature search was conducted according to PRISMA criteria using PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library. Relevant studies were identified based on exposure to isolated and confined environments, generally being also antigen-limited, for a minimum of 28 days and classified according to the microbiota analysis method (cultivation- or molecular based approaches) and the isolation habitat (space, space- or microgravity simulation such as MARS-500 or natural isolation such as Antarctica). Microbial shifts in abundance, alpha diversity and community structure in response to isolation were assessed., Results: Regardless of the study habitat, inconsistent shifts in abundance of 40 different genera, mainly in the phylum Bacillota (formerly Firmicutes) were reported. Overall, the heterogeneity of studies was high. Reducing heterogeneity was neither possible by differentiating the microbiota analysis methods nor by subgrouping according to the isolation habitat. Alpha diversity evolved non-specifically, whereas the microbial community structure remained dissimilar despite partial convergence. The GI ecosystem returned to baseline levels following exposure, showing resilience irrespective of the experiment length., Conclusion: An isolated and confined environment has a considerable impact on the GI microbiota composition in terms of diversity and relative abundances of dominant taxa. However, due to a limited number of studies with rather small sample sizes, it is important to approach an in-depth conclusion with caution, and results should be considered as a preliminary trend. Polymer-metal nanocomposites have widespread applications in biomedical fields such as imaging, catalysis, and drug delivery. These particles are characterized by combined organic and inorganic properties. Specifically, photothermal nanocomposites incorporating polymeric and plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) have been designed for both triggered drug release and as imaging agents. However, the usual design of nanocomposites confers characteristic issues, among which are the decrease of optical properties and resulting low photothermal efficiency, as well as interactions with loaded drugs. Herein, we report the design of a core-satellite polymer-metal nanocomposite assembled by coiled-coil peptides and its superior photothermal efficiency compared to electrostatic-driven nanocomposites which is the standard design. We also found that the orientation of gold nanorods on the surface of polymeric NPs is of importance in the final photothermal efficiency and could be exploited for various applications. Our findings provide an alternative to current wrapping and electrostatic assembly of nanocomposites with the help of coiled-coil peptides and an improvement of the control over core-satellite assemblies with plasmonic NPs. Fertilizers, pesticides and global warming are threatening freshwater aquatic ecosystems. Most of these are shallow ponds or slow-flowing streams or ditches dominated by submerged macrophytes, periphyton or phytoplankton. Regime shifts between the dominance of these primary producers can occur along a gradient of nutrient loading, possibly triggered by specific disturbances influencing their competitive interactions. However, phytoplankton dominance is less desirable due to lower biodiversity and poorer ecosystem function and services. In this study, we combined a microcosm experiment with a process-based model to test three hypotheses: 1) agricultural run-off (ARO), consisting of nitrate and a mixture of organic pesticides and copper, differentially affects primary producers and enhances the risk of regime shifts, 2) warming increases the risk of an ARO-induced regime shift to phytoplankton dominance and 3) custom-tailored process-based models support mechanistic understanding of experimental results through scenario comparison. Experimentally exposing primary producers to a gradient of nitrate and pesticides at 22°C and 26°C supported the first two hypotheses. ARO had direct negative effects on macrophytes, while phytoplankton gained from warming and indirect effects of ARO like a reduction in the competitive pressure exerted by other groups. We used the process-based model to test eight different scenarios. The best qualitative fit between modeled and observed responses was reached only when taking community adaptation and organism acclimation into account. Brittle topologically close-packed precipitates form in many advanced alloys. Due to their complex structures, little is known about their plasticity. Here, a strategy is presented to understand and tailor the deformability of these complex phases by considering the Nb-Co µ-phase as an archetypal material. The plasticity of the Nb-Co µ-phase is controlled by the Laves phase building block that forms parts of its unit cell. It is found that between the bulk C15-NbCo 2 Laves and Nb-Co µ-phases, the interplanar spacing and local stiffness of the Laves phase building block change, leading to a strong reduction in hardness and stiffness, as well as a transition from synchroshear to crystallographic slip. Furthermore, as the composition changes from Nb 6 Co 7 to Nb 7 Co 6 , the Co atoms in the triple layer are substituted such that the triple layer of the Laves phase building block becomes a slab of pure Nb, resulting in inhomogeneous changes in elasticity and a transition from crystallographic slip to a glide-and-shuffle mechanism. These findings open opportunities to purposefully tailor the plasticity of these topologically close-packed phases in the bulk by manipulating the interplanar spacing and local shear modulus of the fundamental crystal building blocks at the atomic scale., (© 2023 The Authors. The dynamic structure of liquid sodium is investigated using classical molecular dynamics simulations over a wide range of densities (from 739 to 4177 kg m -3 ). The interactions are described using screened pseudopotential formalism with Fiolhais model of electron-ion interaction. The effective pair potentials obtained are validated by comparing the predicted static structure, coordination number, self-diffusion coefficients and spectral density of the velocity autocorrelation function with results from ab initio simulations at the same state points. Both longitudinal and transverse collective excitations are computed from the corresponding structure functions and their evolution with density is investigated. The frequency of the longitudinal excitations increases with density, as well as the sound speed, which is extracted from their dispersion curves. The frequency of the transverse excitations also increases with density, but they cannot propagate over macroscopic distances and the propagation gap clearly appears. N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase) is important for crustaceans because the enzyme activity is necessary for the molting process. The present study aimed to assess the sensitivity of Palaemon serratus NAGase activity to a set of compounds of diverse chemical families in the context of in vitro exposures. Compounds representing different chemical families were selected according to their abundance, impact in the environment, and relevance as disruptors of the molting process. In a first step, four solvents (dimethylsulfoxide [DMSO], methanol, acetone, and ethanol) were tested to determine their suitability to dissolve hydrophobic compounds without affecting NAGase activity. Exclusively, ethanol had no effect on enzyme activity and on the integrity of the proteins present in the enzyme extract. The 18 other compounds were tested and four of these compounds, pentoxifylline, fenoxycarb, dithiocarbamate, and RH5849, showed a specific alteration on the activity of NAGase, without affecting the protein content. However, cadmium, zinc, and glyphosate showed a nonspecific alteration, affecting both the enzyme activity and the proteins, whereas ibuprofen exclusively altered the protein content. Background: The use of serious games (SG) has received increasing attention in health care, and can be applied for both rehabilitation and evaluation of motor signs of several diseases, such as Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the use of these instruments in clinical practice is poorly observed, since there is a scarcity of games that, during their development process, simultaneously address issues of usability and architectural design, contributing to the non-satisfaction of the actual needs of professionals and patients. Thus, this study aimed to present the architecture and usability evaluation at the design stage of a serious game, so-called RehaBEElitation , and assess the accessibility of the game., Methods: The game was created by a multidisciplinary team with experience in game development and PD, taking into consideration design guidelines for the development of SG. The user must control the movements of a bee in a 3D environment. The game tasks were designed to mimic the following movements found in the gold-standard method tool-Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS)-for the assessment of individuals with PD: hand opening and closing, hand extension and flexion, hand adduction and abduction, finger tapping, and forearm supination and pronation. The user interacts with the game using a wearable interface device that embeds inertial and tactile sensors. The architecture of RehaBEElitation was detailed using the business process model (BPM) notation and the usability of the architecture was evaluated using the Nielsen-Shneiderman heuristics. Game accessibility was evaluated by comparing the overall scores of each phase between 15 healthy participants and 15 PD patients. The PD group interacted with the game in both the ON and OFF states., Results: The system was modularized in order to implement parallel, simultaneous and independent programming at different levels, requiring less computational effort and enabling fluidity between the game and the control of the interface elements in real time. The developed architecture allows the inclusion of new elements for patient status monitoring, extending the functionality of the tool without changing its fundamental characteristics. The heuristic evaluation contemplated all the 14 heuristics proposed by Shneiderman, which enabled the implementation of improvements in the game. The evaluation of accessibility revealed no statistically significant differences ( p  < 0.05) between groups, except for the healthy group and the PD group in the OFF state of medication during Phase 3 of the game., Conclusions: The proposed architecture was presented in order to facilitate the reproduction of the system and extend its application to other scenarios. In the same way, the heuristic evaluation performed can serve as a contribution to the advancement of the SG design for PD. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the links between primary psychopathic traits and driving behavior on the one hand, and driving anger expression on the other hand, through the specific contribution of empathy, impulsiveness, and sensation seeking, in a sample of French driving offenders., Methods: One thousand six hundred and eighty-six driving offenders completed a paper-and-pencil questionnaire during 110 drivers' rehabilitation programs., Results: Primary psychopathic traits were positively associated with violations and aggressive driving anger expression, and negatively associated with prosocial driving behaviors. These associations were partially mediated by empathy, impulsiveness, and sensation seeking. In addition, the negative relation between primary psychopathic traits and adaptive anger expression was fully mediated by these three personal dispositions., Conclusion: Low empathy, high impulsiveness and sensation seeking are important characteristics of driving offenders with high psychopathic traits. The Programme 13-Novembre aims to analyze the individual and collective memory of the terrorist attacks of November 13, 2015. At its heart is the Étude 1000, which is to gather the same 1000 people in audiovisual interviews four times in 10 years. Having the transcripts at our disposal, we choose here to show the importance of discourse analysis by recalling its theoretical foundations, to present one of the tools allowing this statistical analysis, the Correspondence Factor Analysis, and to use it to analyze the sub-corpus of interviews conducted at a distance from the Paris events, with 76 inhabitants of the Metz region. Studies on the prevalence of burnout in professionals in service organizations who work in direct contact with the clients or users of the organization have concluded that burnout is a serious health disorder that has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A significant advantage of the Spanish Burnout Inventory (SBI) over other instruments is that it provides a broader conceptualization of burnout by including feelings of guilt as a dimension of burnout to explain its development. However, the measurement invariance of the SBI across countries has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to test the measurement invariance of the SBI among professionals across 17 countries and regions in Europe, Latin America, and Asia, and in different languages. All the countries showed a good fit to the four-factor model, except the Indian sample, which was excluded from the measurement invariance study. Using the alignment method, it was possible to verify the scalar measurement invariance of the four SBI factors across 15 countries and one Spanish region (16 samples). The comparison of estimated latent means indicates that France is the country with the lowest scores on the Enthusiasm factor and the highest scores on the negative factors (Exhaustion, Indolence, and Guilt). In contrast, the Andean countries, Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador, show the highest latent means on the Enthusiasm factor and the lowest means on the negative factors. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in increased psychological pressure on mental health since 2019. The resulting anxiety and stress have permeated every aspect of life during confinement., Objective: To provide psychologists with an unbiased measure that can aid in the preliminary diagnosis of anxiety disorders and be used as an initial treatment in cognitive-behavioral therapy, this article introduces automated recognition of three levels of anxiety., Methods: Anxiety was elicited by exposing participants to virtual environments inspired by social situations in reference to the Liebowitz social anxiety scale. Relevant parameters, such as heart rate variability and vasoconstriction were derived from the measurement of the blood volume pulse (BVP) signal., Results: A long short-term memory architecture achieved an accuracy of approximately 98% on the training and test set., Conclusion: The generated model allowed for careful study of the state of seven phobic participants during virtual reality exposure (VRE).

Introduction: Following a mass casualty event, such as the Paris terrorist attacks of 13 November 2015, first responders need to identify individuals at risk of PTSD. Physical peritraumatic symptoms involving the autonomic nervous system may be useful in this task. Objective: We sought to determine the trajectory of physical response intensity in individuals exposed to the Paris terrorist attacks using repeated measures, and to examine its associations with PTSD. Using network modelling, we examined whether peritraumatic physical symptom associations differed by PTSD status. Methods: Physical reactions were assessed using the Subjective Physical Reactions Scale at three time points: peritraumatic by retrospective recall, then current at one year (8-18 months) and three years (30-42 months) after the attacks. Interaction networks between peritraumatic physical reactions were compared according to PTSD status. Results: On the one hand, the reported intensity of physical reactions was significantly higher in the PTSD group at all time points. On the other hand, using the dynamic approach, more robust positive interactions between peritraumatic physical reactions were found in the PTSD group one and three years after the attacks. Negative interactions were found in the no-PTSD group at one year. Peritraumatic physical numbness was found to be the most central network symptom in the PTSD group, whereas it was least central in the no-PTSD group. Discussion: Network analysis of the interaction between peritraumatic physical subjective responses, particularly physical numbness, may provide insight into the clinical course of PTSD. Our knowledge of the brain regions involved in dissociation supports the hypothesis that the periaqueductal grey may contribute to the process leading to physical numbing. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the role of peritraumatic somatic symptoms in the course of PTSD. Peritraumatic physical numbness appears to be a key marker of PTSD and its identification may help to improve early triage.

Ecologists rely on various functional traits when investigating the functioning of ecological systems and its responses to global changes. Changing nutrient levels, for example, can affect taxa expressing different trait combinations in various ways, e.g., favoring small, fast-growing species under high phosphorus conditions. Stoichiometric traits, describing the elemental composition of organism body tissues, can help in understanding the mechanisms behind such functional shifts. So far, mainly life-history traits have been related to body stoichiometry (e.g., the growth rate hypothesis) on a limited number of taxa, and there is little knowledge of the general link between stoichiometric and other functional traits on a taxonomically large scale. Here, we highlight this link in the freshwater macroinvertebrates, testing predictions from underlying trait-based and Ecological Stoichiometry Theory (EST) in >200 taxa belonging to eight larger taxonomic groups. We applied a series of multivariate analyses on six of their stoichiometric traits (%C, %N, %P, C:N, C:P, and N:P) and 23 biological and ecological traits. We found significant relationships between stoichiometric traits and other types of traits when analyzing single-trait and multi-trait profiles. Patterns found within traits related to organism development or nutrient cycling were in line with our assumptions based on EST, e.g., traits describing predators were associated with high %N; traits suggesting a fast development (small maximum body size and high molting frequency) with high %P. Associations between ecological traits and body stoichiometry could be explained by the longitudinal stream gradient: Taxa preferring headwater habitats (i.e., high altitude, coarse substrate, and cold temperature) exhibited high %N and %P. Demonstrating the link between stoichiometric and both bio- and ecological traits on a large diversity of taxa underlines the potential of integrating stoichiometric traits into ecological analyses to improve our understanding of taxonomic and functional responses of communities-and ecosystems-to changing environmental conditions worldwide., (© 2022 The Authors. Our goal for this study was to adapt the Mindfulness Inventory for Sport (MIS) into written Arabic that would be easily understood in North African countries (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco or TAM). Assessment tools in Arabic, such as this MIS-TAM version, are rare but essential for evaluating the effectiveness of sport psychology interventions. We adopted a committee approach to obtain a first Arabic version of the MIS. We asked a team of translators to adapt the items to the level of understanding of 13-year-old athletes by selecting words common to the culture of the three countries. The validation process underwent three phases. In Study 1, we tested MIS-TAM for clarity and deemed it acceptable. In Study 2 we tested the construct validity of two different models with confirmatory factorial analyses. These analyses confirmed that the structure of the 15-item MIS-TAM was psychometrically similar to the original version; it had a first order model encompassing three dimensions: Awareness, Non-Judgement and Refocusing. Analyses also found the internal consistency of the MIS-TAM acceptable. We assessed convergent validity in Study 3 with the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale, but no correlations between the two instruments were significant. In conclusion, the MIS-TAM has acceptable psychometric properties, though further work is needed regarding convergent validity. The rigorous work of translation and adaptation focused on shared linguistics in three target countries, and this questionnaire will also prove useful in other countries where Arabic is the main language.

The temporomandibular joint is one of the most frequently used joints of the human body. Its malfunction can severely influence patient's well-being. Since the temporomandibular joint disc plays a major role in its functioning, especially in load distribution within the joint, it appears to be a crucial element to understand. This paper aims to improve understanding of the tissues within close in vivo conditions (i.e. hydrated at 37 ° C) by (i) comforting literature by revealing the presence of residual stresses within the temporomandibular joint disc, (ii) quantifying eigenstrains through a relaxation process and finally (iii) evaluating the internal mechanical state in intact temporomandibular joint discs central part, considering the tissue as a thin layer. Both global specimen size measurements and local digital image correlation were used to quantify 6 samples' deformation through a detailed analysis of approximately 30 images, recorded for approximately one hour, per disc. Thanks to a backward time approach combined to an analytical model, eigenstrains were assessed on discs. For the first time, the presence of complex initial strain fields within cylindrical specimens of porcine temporomandibular joint discs was quantified, confirming indications from literature. Digital image analysis revealed the partial internal stress release through specimen self-deformation. Close to zero in central part, it reached approximately 13% radial strain in the outer ring within a characteristic relaxation time close to 530s. The principal strains' distribution agrees with the alignment of the collagen fibers in the central part of the discs revealed in many works. It led to deduce that, in the central area of the discs, the matrix undergoes a radial compression within physiological conditions to compensate the daily loading stresses. Matrix Gla protein (MGP) is mostly known to be a calcification inhibitor, as its absence leads to ectopic calcification of different tissues such as cartilage or arteries. MGP deficiency also leads to low bone mass and delayed bone growth. In the present contribution, we investigate the effect of MGP deficiency on the structural and material mechanical bone properties by focusing on the elastic response of femurs undergoing three-points bending. To this aim, biomechanical tests are performed on femurs issued from Mgp-deficient mice at 14, 21, 28, and 35 days of postnatal life and compared to healthy control femurs. µCT acquisitions enable to reconstruct bone geometries and are used to construct subject-specific finite element models avoiding some of the reported limitations concerning the use of beam-like assumptions for small bone samples. Our results indicate that MGP deficiency may be associated to differences in both structural and material properties of femurs during early stages of development. MGP deficiency appears to be related to a decrease in bone dimensions, compensated by higher material properties resulting in similar structural bone properties at P35. The search for a unique density-elasticity relationship based on calibrated bone mineral density (BMD) indicates that MGP deficiency may affect bone tissue in several ways, that may not be represented uniquely from the quantification of BMD. Despite of its limitation to elastic response, the present preliminary study reports for the very first time the mechanical skeletal properties of Mgp-deficient mice at early stages of development.

Objetives: This study aims to validate that haptic simulator assistance could improve drilling ability in implantology and that the repetition of training session could highlight a learning curve., Methods: This work was carried out with 88 first-year dental students. After randomization, students were divided into two groups. Group 1 was assigned to prepare an implant site for a left first mandibular molar (36) on haptic simulator with assistance provided by simulator. Group 2 had to perform the same exercise without assistance. Whatever the group, the maximum time for each reparation was restricted to 5 min. An interval of 1 week was done between each session. For each test, different objective parameters provided by the simulator were recorded and analyzed., Results: This study showed that the presence of virtual aids led to quickly obtain better results, and the training led to gradually acquire sufficient competence to do without virtual aids., Conclusion: By associating virtual assistance and repetition, the student will acquire more quickly the skills allowing to carry out his clinical gestures in real conditions., (© 2022 American Dental Education Association.)
