Abstract: To enrich spatio-temporal information on the distribution of alien, cryptogenic, and neonative species in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, a collective effort by 173 marine scientists was made to provide unpublished records and make them open access to the scientific community. Through this effort, we collected and harmonized a dataset of 12,649 records. It includes 247 taxa, of which 217 are Animalia, 25 Plantae and 5 Chromista, from 23 countries surrounding the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Chordata was the most abundant taxonomic group, followed by Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Annelida. In terms of species records, Siganus luridus, Siganus rivulatus, Saurida lessepsianus, Pterois miles, Upeneus moluccensis, Charybdis (Archias) longicollis, and Caulerpa cylindracea were the most numerous. The temporal distribution of the records ranges from 1973 to 2022, with 44% of the records in 2020–2021. Lethrinus borbonicus is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea, while Pomatoschistus quagga, Caulerpa cylindracea, Grateloupia turuturu, and Misophria pallida are first records for the Black Sea; Kapraunia schneideri is recorded for the second time in the Mediterranean and for the first time in Israel; Prionospio depauperata and Pseudonereis anomala are reported for the first time from the Sea of Marmara. Many first country records are also included, namely: Amathia verticillata (Montenegro), Ampithoe valida (Italy), Antithamnion amphigeneum (Greece), Clavelina oblonga (Tunisia and Slovenia), Dendostrea cf. folium (Syria), Epinephelus fasciatus (Tunisia), Ganonema farinosum (Montenegro), Macrorhynchia philippina (Tunisia), Marenzelleria neglecta (Romania), Paratapes textilis (Tunisia), and Botrylloides diegensis (Tunisia).

2. The GRANDMA network in preparation for the fourth gravitational-wave observing run

Abstract: GRANDMA is a world-wide collaboration with the primary scientific goal of studying gravitational-wave sources, discovering their electromagnetic counterparts and characterizing their emission. GRANDMA involves astronomers, astrophysicists, gravitational-wave physicists, and theorists. GRANDMA is now a truly global network of telescopes, with (so far) 30 telescopes in both hemispheres. It incorporates a citizen science programme (Kilonova-Catcher) which constitutes an opportunity to spread the interest in time-domain astronomy. The telescope network is an heterogeneous set of already-existing observing facilities that operate coordinated as a single observatory. Within the network there are wide-field imagers that can observe large areas of the sky to search for optical counterparts, narrow-field instruments that do targeted searches within a predefined list of host-galaxy candidates, and larger telescopes that are devoted to characterization and follow-up of the identified counterparts. Here we present an overview of GRANDMA after the third observing run of the LIGO/VIRGO gravitational-wave observatories in 2019-2020 and its ongoing preparation for the forthcoming fourth observational campaign (O4). Additionally, we review the potential of GRANDMA for the discovery and follow-up of other types of astronomical transients. © COPYRIGHT SPIE.

Abstract: On 14 August 2021, the moment magnitude (Mw) 7.2 Nippes earthquake in Haiti occurred within the same fault zone as its devastating 2010 Mw 7.0 predecessor, but struck the country when field access was limited by insecurity and conventional seismometers from the national network were inoperative. A network of citizen seismometers installed in 2019 provided near-field data critical to rapidly understand the mechanism of the mainshock and monitor its aftershock sequence. Their real-time data defined two aftershock clusters that coincide with two areas of coseismic slip derived from inversions of conventional seismological and geodetic data. Machine learning applied to data from the citizen seismometer closest to the mainshock allows us to forecast aftershocks as accurately as with the network-derived catalog. This shows the utility of citizen science contributing to our understanding of a major earthquake

Abstract: Morphological alterations of the endosomal compartment have been widely described in post-mortem brains from Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients and subjects with Down syndrome (DS) who are at high risk for AD. Immunostaining with antibodies against endosomal markers such as Early Endosome Antigen 1 (EEA1) revealed increased size of EEA1-positive puncta. In DS, peripheral cells such as peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and fibroblasts, share similar phenotype even in the absence of AD. We previously found that PBMCs from AD patients have larger EEA1-positive puncta, correlating with brain amyloid load. Here we analysed the endosomal compartment of fibroblasts from a very well characterised cohort of AD patients (IMABio3) who underwent thorough clinical, imaging and biomarkers assessments. Twenty-one subjects were included (7 AD with mild cognitive impairment (AD-MCI), 7 AD with dementia (AD-D) and 7 controls) who had amyloid-PET at baseline (PiB) and neuropsychological tests at baseline and close to skin biopsy. Fibroblasts isolated from skin biopsies were immunostained with anti-EEA1 antibody and imaged using a spinning disk microscope. Endosomal compartment ultrastructure was also analysed by electron microscopy. All fibroblast lines were genotyped and their AD risk factors identified. Our results show a trend to an increased EEA1-positive puncta volume in fibroblasts from AD-D as compared to controls (p.adj = 0.12) and reveal enhanced endosome area in fibroblasts from AD-MCI and AD-AD versus controls. Larger puncta size correlated with PiB retention in different brain areas and with worse cognitive scores at the time of biopsy as well as faster decline from baseline to the time of biopsy. Finally, we identified three genetic risk factors for AD (ABCA1, COX7C and MYO15A) that were associated with larger EEA1 puncta volume. In conclusion, the endosomal compartment in fibroblasts could be used as cellular peripheral biomarker for both amyloid deposition and cognitive decline in AD patients.

Abstract: Seafloor methane emissions can affect Earth’s climate and ocean chemistry. Vast quantities of methane formed by microbial decomposition of organic matter are locked within gas hydrate and free gas on continental slopes, particularly in large areas with high sediment accumulations such as deep-sea fans. The release of methane in slope environments has frequently been associated with dissociation of gas hydrates near the edge of the gas hydrate stability zone on the upper slope, with discharges in greater water depths less understood. Here we show, using data from the Rio Grande Cone (western South Atlantic), that the intrinsic, gravity-induced downslope collapse of thick slope sediment accumulations creates structures that serve as pathways for gas migration, unlocking methane and causing seafloor emissions via giant gas flares in the water column. The observed emissions in the study region (up to 310 Mg year−1) are three times greater than estimates for the entire US North Atlantic margin and reveal the importance of collapsing sediment accumulations for ocean carbon cycling. Similar outgassing systems on the Amazon and Niger fans suggest that gravity tectonics on passive margins is a common yet overlooked mechanism driving massive seafloor methane emissions in sediment-laden continental slopes.

Abstract: International audience; Purpose Radiotherapy is, with surgery, one of the main therapeutic treatment strategies for meningiomas. No prospective study has defined a consensus for the delineation of target volumes for meningioma radiotherapy. Therefore, target volume definition is mainly based on information from retrospective studies that include heterogeneous patient populations. The aim is to describe delineation guidelines for meningioma radiotherapy as an adjuvant or definitive treatment with intensity-modulated radiation therapy and stereotactic radiation therapy techniques. This guideline is based on a consensus endorsed by a multidisciplinary group of brain tumor experts, members of the Association of French-speaking Neuro-oncologists (ANOCEF). Materials and methods A 3-step procedure was used. First, the steering group carried out a comprehensive review to identify divergent issues on meningiomas target volume delineation. Second, an 84-item web-questionnaire has been developed to precisely define meningioma target volume delineation in the most common clinical situations. Third, experts members of the ANOCEF were requested to answer. The first two rounds were completed online. A third round was carried out by videoconference to allow experts to debate and discuss the remaining uncertain questions. All questions remained in a consensus. Results Limits of the target volume were defined using visible landmarks on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, considering the pathways of tumor extension. The purpose was to develop clear and precise recommendations on meningiomas target volumes. Conclusion New recommendations for meningiomas delineation based on simple anatomic boundaries are proposed by the ANOCEF. Improvement in uniformity in target volume definition is expected.

Abstract: International audience; Seismological models from Apollo missions provided the first records of the Moon inner structure with a decrease in seismic wave velocities at the core–mantle boundary1,2,3. The resolution of these records prevents a strict detection of a putative lunar solid inner core and the impact of the lunar mantle overturn in the lowest part of the Moon is still discussed4,5,6,7. Here we combine geophysical and geodesic constraints from Monte Carlo exploration and thermodynamical simulations for different Moon internal structures to show that only models with a low viscosity zone enriched in ilmenite and an inner core present densities deduced from thermodynamic constraints compatible with densities deduced from tidal deformations. We thus obtain strong indications in favour of the lunar mantle overturn scenario and, in this context, demonstrate the existence of the lunar inner core with a radius of 258 ± 40 km and density 7,822 ± 1,615 kg m−3. Our results question the evolution of the Moon magnetic field thanks to its demonstration of the existence of the inner core and support a global mantle overturn scenario that brings substantial insights on the timeline of the lunar bombardment in the first billion years of the Solar System

Abstract: Some active asteroids have been proposed to be the result of impact events. Because active asteroids are generally discovered serendipitously only after their tail formation, the process of the impact ejecta evolving into a tail has never been directly observed. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission, apart from having successfully changed the orbital period of Dimorphos, demonstrated the activation process of an asteroid from an impact under precisely known impact conditions. Here we report the observations of the DART impact ejecta with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) from impact time T+15 minutes to T+18.5 days at spatial resolutions of ~2.1 km per pixel. Our observations reveal a complex evolution of ejecta, which is first dominated by the gravitational interaction between the Didymos binary system and the ejected dust and later by solar radiation pressure. The lowest-speed ejecta dispersed via a sustained tail that displayed a consistent morphology with previously observed asteroid tails thought to be produced by impact. The ejecta evolution following DART's controlled impact experiment thus provides a framework for understanding the fundamental mechanisms acting on asteroids disrupted by natural impact., accepted by Nature

Abstract: We consider a non-linear variant of the transport-diffusion osmosis model for solving a variety of imaging problems such as shadow/soft-light removal and compact data representation. The non-linear behaviour is encoded in terms of a general scalar function g with suitable properties, which allows to balance the diffusion intensity on the different regions of the image while preventing smoothing artefacts. For the proposed model, conservation properties (intensity and non-negativity) are proved and a variational interpretation is showed for specific choices of g. Upon suitable spatial discretisation, both an explicit and a semi-implicit iterative scheme are considered, for which convergence restrictions and unconditional stability are proved, respectively. To validate the proposed modelling and the computational speed of the numerical schemes considered, we report several results and comparisons for the problem of shadow/light-spot removal and compact data representation, showing that artefact-free and computationally efficient results are obtained in comparison to standard linear and anisotropic models, and state-of-the art approaches., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: The simultaneous clustering of observations and features of data sets (known as co-clustering) has recently emerged as a central machine learning application to summarize massive data sets. However, most existing models focus on continuous and dense data in stationary scenarios, where cluster assignments do not evolve over time. This work introduces a novel latent block model for the dynamic co-clustering of data matrices with high sparsity. To properly model this type of data, we assume that the observations follow a time and block dependent mixture of zero-inflated distributions, thus combining stochastic processes with the time-varying sparsity modeling. To detect abrupt changes in the dynamics of both cluster memberships and data sparsity, the mixing and sparsity proportions are further modeled through systems of ordinary differential equations. The inference of the proposed model relies on an original variational EM procedure whose maximization step trains fully connected neural networks in order to solve the dynamical systems. The usual model selection question is also considered here through an original approach exploiting the ability of the model to work with empty clusters, thanks to the flexibility of deep neural networks. Numerical experiments on simulated and real world data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in the context of count data.

Abstract: Grapevine and wine have deeply shaped the landscapes, economy and cultures of Europe and the Mediterranean. In France, it is considered that viticulture started in the south via contacts with Mediterranean populations (Greeks, Etruscans, Phoenicians), during the second half of the 1st millennium BCE, and spread further with the Romans. Wild grapevines were nevertheless present in various areas of the country all through the Holocene. No archaeological or historical source allows us to follow the history of grapevine and viticulture over the entire Holocene period and over the whole territory.In this paper we investigate the potential of archaeological plant macroremains (seed/fruits and wood) to trace the history of the vine on a large scale. We have assembled the largest possible database of published and unpublished archaeobotanical data, comprising 4449 site-phases for seed and fruits and 1356 site-phases for wood remains. In spite of taphonomic discrepancies and imbalances in the datasets, the different types of macroremains and modes of preservation produce consistent patterns. They provide the first comprehensive picture of the spread of grapevine, fluctuations in the economic role of viticulture and grape uses over time, although some periods and regions are less documented.Grapevine remains are regularly recorded from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age in most regions showing that human societies were already familiar with the wild plant and its fruits, especially in the Mediterranean. In this region, Vitis remains become considerably more frequent and numerous during the Iron Age, from around 500 BCE onwards, testifying to the rapid and strong implantation of viticulture. Grapevine macroremains confirm that the spread of viticulture outside the Mediterranean area occurred mainly during the Roman period. However, this expansion was limited and mainly focused on the South. The main expansion into the temperate zone took place during the Middle Ages. However, the more detailed fluctuations of viticulture, particularly in relation to climate oscillations are still difficult to follow. Pip remains are mainly associated with urban sites. This is a consequence of the actual consumption of grapes and may be evidence of a viticulture centered around urban areas.

Abstract: International audience; The evolution of a star is influenced by its internal rotation dynamics through transport and mixing mechanisms, which are poorly understood. Magnetic fields can play a role in transporting angular momentum and chemical elements, but the origin of magnetism in radiative stellar layers is unclear. Using global numerical simulations, we identify a subcritical transition from laminar flow to turbulence caused by the generation of a magnetic dynamo. Our results have many properties of the theoretically proposed Tayler-Spruit dynamo mechanism, which strongly enhances transport of angular momentum in radiative zones. The dynamo generates deep toroidal fields that are screened by the stellar outer layers. This mechanism could produce strong magnetic fields inside radiative stars without an observable field on their surface.

Abstract: International audience; We report in this study how ocean-bottom seismometers (OBS) can be used as passive sonars to automatically detect, localize, and track moving acoustic sources at the ocean surface. We developed single-station methods based on direction of arrival and on multi-path interference measurements capable of handling continuous erratic signals emitted by ships. Based on a Bayesian mathematical framework, we developed an azimuthal detector and a radial detector and combined them into a fully automatic tracker. We tested the developed algorithm on seismic and hydroacoustic data recorded in the Indian Ocean by an OBS deployed at 4300 m depth, 200 km west of La R eunion Island. We quantified the performances using archives of commercial-vessel trajectories in the area provided by the Automatic Identification System. Detectors demonstrate capabilities in the detection range up to 100 km from the OBS with azimuthal accuracies of a few degrees and with distance accuracies of a few hundred of meters. We expect the method to be easily transposed to any other kind of sources (such as marine mammals).

This includes the first mid-IR spectra of any GRB, obtained with JWST/Near Infrared Spectrograph (0.6–5.5 micron) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (5–12 micron), 12 days after the burst. Assuming that the intrinsic spectral slope is a single power law, with Fν ∝ ν−β, we obtain β ≈ 0.35, modified by substantial dust extinction with AV = 4.9. This suggests extinction above the notional Galactic value, possibly due to patchy extinction within the Milky Way or dust in the GRB host galaxy. It further implies that the X-ray and optical/IR regimes are not on the same segment of the synchrotron spectrum of the afterglow. If the cooling break lies between the X-ray and optical/IR, then the temporal decay rates would only match a post-jet-break model, with electron index p < 2, and with the jet expanding into a uniform ISM medium. The shape of the JWST spectrum is near-identical in the optical/near-IR to X-SHOOTER spectroscopy obtained at 0.5 days and to later time observations with HST. The lack of spectral evolution suggests that any accompanying supernova (SN) is either substantially fainter or bluer than SN 1998bw, the proto-type GRB-SN. Our HST observations also reveal a disk-like host galaxy, viewed close to edge-on, that further complicates the isolation of any SN component. The host galaxy appears rather typical among long-GRB hosts and suggests that the extreme properties of GRB 221009A are not directly tied to its galaxy-scale environment. © 2023. The Author(s). Abstract: The degree distributions of complex networks are usually considered to be power law. However, it is not the case for a large number of them. We thus propose a new model able to build random growing networks with (almost) any wanted degree distribution. The degree distribution can either be theoretical or extracted from a real-world network. The main idea is to invert the recurrence equation commonly used to compute the degree distribution in order to find a convenient attachment function for node connections - commonly chosen as linear. We compute this attachment function for some classical distributions, as the power-law, broken power-law, geometric and Poisson distributions. We also use the model on an undirected version of the Twitter network, for which the degree distribution has an unusual shape. We finally show that the divergence of chosen attachment functions is heavily links to the heavy-tailed property of the obtained degree distributions., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: International audience; Réalisée dans le cadre du programme Africapolis de l’OCDE, la cartographie des agglomérations morphologiques de la RDC révèle l’existence d’un système de peuplement nouveau dont les structures spatiales n’ont jamais été formalisées conceptuellement jusqu’à présent. Contrairement à l’armature urbaine officielle de la RDC, largement héritée d’une logique coloniale, ce système de peuplement, suit des cheminements nouveaux le long des crêtes des interfluves. Il a donné naissances à d’innombrables agglomérations, dont la quasi-totalité n’est reconnue comme “urbaine” par aucune administration, aucune instance publique, au point que certaines n’ont même pas de nom sur les cartes. Plus de 400 d’entre elles ont entre 10 000 et 100 000 habitants. Dans ce vaste pays, dont la population a triplé entre 1984 et 2020, ce système de peuplement apparaît comme un réseau urbain supplétif, car il vient combler les carences d’un réseau urbain légal trop extensif. Dévoilée au prix d’une cartographie fine, l’analyse de la morphologie montre que, loin de l’informalité, ce processus produit des formes d’urbanisme particulièrement rationnelles.

Abstract: The propagation of frost in an assembly of supercooled dew droplets takes place by the formation of ice protrusions that bridge ice particles and still-liquid droplets. In this work, we develop a Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) model to study the formation kinetics of the ice protrusions. The KMC simulations reproduce well the experimental results reported in the literature. The elongation speed of the ice protrusions does not depend on the droplet size but increases when the interdroplet distance decreases, the temperature increases, or the substrate wettability increases. While 2D diffusion of the water molecules on the substrate surface is sufficient to explain the process kinetics, high 3D (vapor) water-molecule concentration can lead to the development of 3D lateral branches on the ice protrusions. A 1D analytical model based on the water-molecule concentration gradient between a droplet and a nearby ice particle reproduces well the simulation results and highlights the relation between the protrusion elongation kinetics and parameters like the interdroplet distance, the water diffusivity, and the concentration gradient. The bridge-formation time has a quadratic dependence on the droplet-ice distance. Comparing the simulations, the analytical model, and the experimental results of the literature, we conclude that the propagation of frost on a flat substrate in an assembly of supercooled dew droplets with interdroplet spacing larger than about 1 μm is limited by water-molecule diffusivity.

Abstract: This work is concerned with the numerical modeling of the Darcy flow and solute transport in fractured porous media for which the fractures are modeled as interfaces of codimension one. The hybrid-dimensional flow and transport problems are discretizaed by a lumped piecewise linear finite element method, combined with the algebraic correction of the convective fluxes. The resulting transport discretization can be interpreted as a conservative finite volume scheme that satisfies the discrete maximum principle, while introducing a very limited amount of numerical diffusion. In the context of fractured porous media flow the CFL number may vary by several order of magnitude, which makes explicit time stepping unfeasible. To cope with this difficulty we propose an adaptive semi-implicit time stepping strategy that reduces to the low order linear implicit discretization in the high CFL regions that include, but may not be limited to the fracture network. The performance of the fully explicit and semi-implicit variants of the method are investigated through the numerical experiment.

Abstract: Hyperbolicity is a graph parameter that indicates how much the shortest-path distance metric of a graph deviates from a tree metric. It is used in various fields such as networking, security, and bioinformatics for the classification of complex networks, the design of routing schemes, and the analysis of graph algorithms. Despite recent progress, computing the hyperbolicity of a graph remains challenging. Indeed, the best known algorithm has time complexity O(n 3.69 ) , which is prohibitive for large graphs, and the most efficient algorithms in practice have space complexity O(n 2 ) . Thus, time as well as space are bottlenecks for computing the hyperbolicity. In this article, we design a tool for enumerating all far-apart pairs of a graph by decreasing distances. A node pair (u, v) of a graph is far-apart if both v is a leaf of all shortest-path trees rooted at u and u is a leaf of all shortest-path trees rooted at v . This notion was previously used to drastically reduce the computation time for hyperbolicity in practice. However, it required the computation of the distance matrix to sort all pairs of nodes by decreasing distance, which requires an infeasible amount of memory already for medium-sized graphs. We present a new data structure that avoids this memory bottleneck in practice and for the first time enables computing the hyperbolicity of several large graphs that were far out of reach using previous algorithms. For some instances, we reduce the memory consumption by at least two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, we show that for many graphs, only a very small fraction of far-apart pairs has to be considered for the hyperbolicity computation, explaining this drastic reduction of memory. As iterating over far-apart pairs in decreasing order without storing them explicitly is a very general tool, we believe that our approach might also be relevant to other problems.

Abstract: As an alpha emitter and chemical toxicant, uranium toxicity in living organisms is driven by its molecular interactions. It is therefore essential to identify main determinants of uranium affinity for proteins. Others and we showed that introducing a phosphoryl group in the coordination sphere of uranyl confers a strong affinity of proteins for uranyl. In this work, using calmodulin site 1 as a template, we modulate the structural organization of a metal-binding loop comprising carboxylate and/or carbonyl ligands and reach affinities for uranyl comparable to that provided by introducing a strong phosphoryl ligand. Shortening the metal binding loop of calmodulin site 1 from 12 to 10 amino acids in CaMΔ increases the uranyl-binding affinity by about 2 orders of magnitude to log

Abstract: National audience; Le premier confinement de la crise sanitaire Covid 19 a bouleversé les pratiques médicales et soignantes, avec une priorisation des patients positifs à la Covid et une focalisation sur les flux en réanimation. Or, dans les Centres de Soin d’Accompagnement et de Prévention en Addictologie (CSAPA), la dimension relationnelle du soin est centrale. Les professionnels de santé ont été impactés par les protocoles contraignants en matière d’asepsie, avec un risque de rupture de suivi accru chez des patients déjà vulnérables. À partir du cas du CSAPA de Grasse, l’article vise premièrement à analyser rétrospectivement les tensions éthiques rencontrées autour de l’accueil de l’altérité de ces patients aux problématiques complexes et deuxièmement à mettre en lumière l’inventivité des soignants dans leurs pratiques quotidiennes. L’approche développée est philosophique et conceptuelle, centrée sur la philosophie d’E. Levinas et son éthique du « visage » car la crise a exacerbé des tensions éthiques préexistantes autour de l’intersubjectivité. Les soignants ont dû faire face à une « responsabilité pour autrui », elle aussi renforcée. Mais la crise a pu aussi être l’occasion de réinvestir le soin relationnel, en se détachant du primat de la vue: le masque a tantôt aidé tantôt entravé le soin relationnel, mettant au jour la vulnérabilité partagée des soignants et des soignés. La crise sanitaire nous rappelle que la vigilance est toujours de mise vis-à-vis des risques de déshumanisation de la relation de soin.

Abstract: International audience; We propose a controllability method for the numerical solution of time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in their first-order formulation. By minimizing a quadratic cost functional, which measures the deviation from periodicity, the controllability method determines iteratively a periodic solution in the time domain. At each conjugate gradient iteration, the gradient of the cost functional is simply computed by running any time-dependent simulation code forward and backward for one period, thus leading to a non-intrusive implementation easily integrated into existing software. Moreover, the proposed algorithm automatically inherits the parallelism, scalability, and low memory footprint of the underlying time-domain solver. Since the time-periodic solution obtained by minimization is not necessarily unique, we apply a cheap post-processing filtering procedure which recovers the time-harmonic solution from any minimizer. Finally, we present a series of numerical examples which show that our algorithm greatly speeds up the convergence towards the desired time-harmonic solution when compared to simply running the time-marching code until the time-harmonic regime is eventually reached.

Abstract: Sources of geophysical noise (such as wind, sea waves and earthquakes) or of anthropogenic noise impact ground-based gravitational-wave interferometric detectors, causing transient sensitivity worsening and gaps in data taking. During the one year-long third Observing Run (O3: from April 01, 2019 to March 27, 2020), the Virgo Collaboration collected a statistically significant dataset, used in this article to study the response of the detector to a variety of environmental conditions. We correlated environmental parameters to global detector performance, such as observation range, duty cycle and control losses. Where possible, we identified weaknesses in the detector that will be used to elaborate strategies in order to improve Virgo robustness against external disturbances for the next data taking period, O4, currently planned to start at the end of 2022. Few models for generating random hypergraphs exist, and also, just a few models allow to both preserve a power-law degree distribution and a high modularity indicating the presence of communities. We present a dynamic preferential attachment hypergraph model which features partition into communities. We prove that its degree distribution follows a power-law, and we give theoretical lower bounds for its modularity. We compare its characteristics with a real-life co-authorship network and show that our model achieves good performances. We believe that our hypergraph model will be an interesting tool that may be used in many research domains in order to reflect better real-life phenomena.

Abstract: SUMMARYThe Opalinus Clay (OPA) is a clay-rich formation considered as a potential host rock for radioactive waste repositories and as a caprock for carbon storage in Switzerland. Its very low permeability (10−19 to 10−21 m2) makes it a potential sealing horizon, however the presence of faults that may be activated during the lifetime of a repository project can compromise the long-term hydrological confinement, and lead to mechanical instability. Here, we have performed laboratory experiments to test the effect of relative humidity (RH), grain size (g.s.) and normal stress on rate-and-state frictional properties and stability of fault laboratory analogues corresponding to powders of OPA shaly facies. The sifted host rock powders at different grain size fractions ( 35 MPa is dictated by a transition from localized to distributed deformation and (2) water vapour content does not affect the deformation mechanisms and dilation, whereas it decreases steady-state friction (μss), and enhances fault stability.

Abstract: How does an employee’s centrality in intrafirm research and development activities affect the employee’s propensity for outward mobility? Does this proclivity vary by the type of employment the employee seeks: moving to other firms versus founding a new venture? We maintain that, to answer these questions, we must distinguish between an employee’s centrality in the intrafirm collaboration network and the employee’s centrality in the intrafirm technological recombination network. We utilize the curricula vitae and patent data of corporate inventors at a leading semiconductor company between 1993 and 2012 to test our hypotheses. Contrary to prevailing views, our competing risk model indicates that corporate inventors who are central in the intrafirm collaboration and technological network and, thus, have the most opportunities are less likely to leave the current employer. However, when considering external employment opportunities, their preferences vary. Collaboration-central individuals are more likely to start a new venture than to move to another employer. Their skill in developing interpersonal relationships enables them to attract the tangible and intangible resources needed in a new firm. In contrast, inventors whose technological expertise is central to the firm’s technology recombination network are more likely to move to another employer than to start a new venture. In an established firm, they can leverage their technological know-how using the resources that a new venture would lack. Our theory highlights the trade-offs in employees’ attempts to take advantage of their internal and external value based on their position within the firm’s collaboration and technological networks. Abstract: International audience; Let G be a graph, and l:E(G) → {1,...,k} be a k-labelling of G, i.e., an assignment of labels from {1,...,k} to the edges of G. We say that l is irregular if no two distinct vertices of G are incident to the same sum of labels. The irregularity strength of G, denoted by s(G), is the smallest k such that irregular k-labellings of G exist. These notions were introduced in the late 1980s as an alternative way to deal with an optimisation problem where one aims at making a graph irregular by multiplying its edges in an optimal way. Since then, the irregularity strength has received a lot of attention, focusing mainly on proving bounds and investigating side aspects and variants. In this work, we consider the algorithmic complexity of determining the irregularity strength of a given graph. We prove that two close variants of this problem are NP-hard, which we suspect might indicate that the original problem is hard too. Namely, we prove that determining the distant irregularity strength, where only vertices within a certain distance are required to be incident to different sums of labels, and the multiset irregularity strength, where any two distinct vertices are required to be incident to different multisets of labels, are NP-hard problems.

Abstract: International audience; Coffee production is an important agriculture activity which contributes significantly to the economic growth of many countries in the world. One of the major constraints to coffee production throughout the world is the damage caused by the coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). It is the most damaging insect pest to coffee production in the world. These insects infest coffee berries, preferably mature berries, and spend most of their life cycle inside the berries, which make them quite difficult to control. In this work, we introduce and analyse a berry age-structured model describing the infestation dynamics of coffee berries by CBB. Using the semigroup theory in the case of Lipschitz perturbation, we show that the model has a unique nonnegative and bounded solution. We derive an explicit formula of the basic reproduction number, R0, using the next generation approach and the biological interpretation of this threshold in a specific case. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract: International audience; Maintaining up-to-date KVM hypervisors requires regular upgrades to the host kernel, hence rebooting the physical host with the consequent termination of running Virtual Machines (VMs). Cloud platforms capable of massive large-scale live migrations evacuate VMs from the hosts before rebooting, minimizing the impact over VM up-time. However, scenarios exist where resource constraints make live migration undesirable, or the presence of fault-tolerant instances (e.g., replicated services) favors the adoption of VM termination, a simpler but more disruptive strategy. In this article, we present Hy-FiX, a fast in-place upgrade solution for KVM hypervisors. Hy-FiX preserves VM memory across host reboots, protecting the execution state of running guests while hypervisor upgrades are applied. Hy-FiX memory preservation across reboot, combined with a mixed suspend-to-disk/suspend-to-RAM technique, achieves a 2.31-second checkpoint/restore time for a 256 GB VM, and Hy-FiX lazy memory initialization reboots an enterprise-class host in constant time (7.6 seconds) regardless of its equipped memory. Hy-FiX is, therefore, a better alternative to classical VM termination and restart.

Abstract: International audience; Este artigo mostra como o museu pode ser um parceiro da escola e prologar as aprendizagens escolares, particularmente em termos de discurso sobre obras de arte, mas também desenvolver o aprendizado sobre o funcionamento do museu e os códigos culturais a fim de treinar os visitantes. Ao analisar uma visita escolar com alunos de 3 e 4 anos podemos compreender como o gênero de mediação escolar do museu se adapta a um público jovem. O padrão não muda muito em comparação com outras visitas com um público escolar mais idoso, mas o mediador é muito cuidadoso para fornecer as palavras para descrever as obras. Desta forma, as crianças aprendem a visitar o museu e a expandir seu repertório linguístico e seu repertório d’experiencias culturais. Um grande desafio social.

Abstract: SUMMARY Many studies have pointed out a correlation between either the cumulative or the maximum seismic moment and the injected fluid volume when analysing global data sets of fluid injection-induced earthquake sequences. However, those correlations become quite uncertain when looking at individual episodes, mainly because of the large aseismic component of the induced deformation. If natural swarms are thought to result from the same physical processes as sequences from anthropogenic origin, little is still known about them as observations are limited by the depth of the active zone and the moderate deformations. In this work, we make profit of the similarity between both natural and injection-induced swarms. To this aim, we develop new relations between seismic observables and hydraulic attributes by using a global compilation of injection-induced earthquake catalogues, leading to two methods to estimate the injected fluid volume based solely on earthquake catalogues. Once the precision of our approaches is validated, we estimate the volume and flowrate of fluids circulating in diverse natural swarms, shedding a new light on the fluid dynamics that trigger them.

Abstract: International audience; Given the growing adoption of AI, cloud data lakes are facing the need to support cost-effective "just-in-case" data archival over long time periods to meet regulatory compliance requirements. Unfortunately, current media technologies suffer from fundamental issues that will soon, if not already, make cost-effective data archival infeasible. In this paper, we present a vision for redesigning the archival tier of cloud data lakes based on a novel, obsolescence-free storage medium-synthetic DNA. In doing so, we make two contributions: (i) we highlight the challenges in using DNA for data archival and list several open research problems, (ii) we outline OligoArchive-DSM (OA-DSM)-an end-to-end DNA storage pipeline that we are developing to demonstrate the feasibility of our vision.

Abstract: International audience; Quasi-vertical gallium nitride (GaN) Schottky diodes on silicon carbide (SiC) substrates were fabricated for frequency multiplier applications. The epitaxial structure employed had an n− layer of 590 nm with doping 6.6 × 1016 cm−3, while the n+ layer was 950 nm thick, with doping 2 × 1019 cm−3. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) chemical surface treatment before Schottky contact metallization was employed to study its effect in improving the diode parameters. The KOH-treated diode demonstrated a breakdown voltage of − 27.5 V, which is the highest reported for this type of diode. Cut-off frequencies around 500 GHz were obtained at high reverse bias (− 25 V) in spite of high series resistance. The result obtained in breakdown voltage value warrants further research in surface treatment and post-annealing of the Schottky contact optimization in order to decrease the series resistance.

Abstract: International audience; This work deals with the discretization of single-phase Darcy flows in fractured and deformable porous media, including frictional contact at the matrix-fracture interfaces. Fractures are described as a network of planar surfaces leading to so-called mixed-dimensional models. Small displacements and a linear poro-elastic behavior are considered in the matrix. One key difficulty to simulate such coupled poro-mechanical models is related to the formulation and discretization of the contact mechanical sub-problem. Our starting point is based on the mixed formulation using facewise constant Lagrange multipliers along the fractures representing normal and tangential stresses. This is a natural choice for the discretization of the contact dual cone in order to account for complex fracture networks with corners and intersections. It leads to local expressions of the contact conditions and to efficient semi-smooth nonlinear solvers. On the other hand, such a mixed formulation requires to satisfy a compatibility condition between the discrete spaces restricting the choice of the displacement space and potentially leading to sub-optimal accuracy. This motivates the investigation of two alternative formulations based either on a stabilized mixed formulation or on the Nitsche's method. These three types of formulations are first investigated theoritically in order to enhance their connections. Then, they are compared numerically in terms of accuracy and nonlinear convergence. The sensitivity to the choice of the formulation parameters is also investigated. Several 2D test cases are considered with various fracture networks using both P1 and P2 conforming Finite Element discretizations of the displacement field and an Hybrid Finite Volume discretization of the mixed-dimensional Darcy flow model.

Abstract: International audience; The existence of an observable precursory phase of slip on the fault before large earthquakes has been debated for decades. Although observations preceding several large earthquakes have been proposed as possible indicators of precursory slip, these observations do not directly precede earthquakes, are not seen before most events, and are also commonly observed without being followed by earthquakes. We conducted a global search for short-term precursory slip in GPS data. We summed the displacements measured by 3026 high-rate GPS time series—projected onto the directions expected from precursory slip at the hypocenter—during 48 hours before 90 (moment magnitude ≥7) earthquakes. Our approach reveals a ≈2-hour-long exponential acceleration of slip before the ruptures, suggesting that large earthquakes start with a precursory phase of slip, which improvements in measurement precision and density could more effectively detect and possibly monitor.

Abstract: International audience; In a world more and more affected by natural and/or industrial disasters, it is essential to understand, analyze and control human behavior during such events. The work presented in this article is one of the results of a transdisciplinary collaboration between geographers, psychologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, operational staff and stakeholders in risk management. This collaboration made it possible to identify the diverse behavioral reactions that can occur during a disaster and to propose a categorization of these behavioral states and their transitions. These behavioral dynamics are described by the APC (Alert-Panic-Control) mathematical model, which integrates two key elements (among others) during disasters: cognition and social contagion. Several scenarios are developed, and a qualitative analysis of the model is conducted to better understand the role of crowd density and risk culture on behavioral dynamics.; Dans un monde de plus en plus touché par les catastrophes naturelles et/ou industrielles, il est essentiel de comprendre, d'analyser et de maîtriser les comportements humains lors de tels événements. Le travail présenté dans cet article est l'un des résultats d'une collaboration transdisciplinaire entre géographes, psychologues, mathématiciens, informaticiens, opérationnels et acteurs de la gestion des risques. Cette collaboration a permis d'identifier les diverses réactions comportementales pouvant survenir lors d'une catastrophe et de proposer une catégorisation de ces états comportementaux et de leurs transitions. Ces dynamiques comportementales sont décrites par le modèle mathématique APC (Alerte-Panique-Contrôle), qui intègre deux éléments clés (parmi d'autres) lors de catastrophes : la cognition et la contagion sociale. Plusieurs scénarios sont développés et une analyse qualitative du modèle est menée pour mieux comprendre le rôle de la densité de la foule et de la culture du risque sur la dynamique comportementale.

Abstract: Ce document rend compte de travaux menés lors d’une campagne de terrain sur la plage des Ponchettes à Nice, le 17 juillet 2020. Ils s’inscrivent dans une étude plus vaste sur le retour à la plage après le confinement dû à la crise sanitaire du Covid-19 au printemps 2020, dans quatre grandes villes de Méditerranée occidentale : Marseille et Nice en France, Barcelone et Valence en Espagne. Le document expose les modalités de collecte et de traitement des données relatives à la fréquentation du site. L’information produite s’inscrit dans une initiative commencée en 2013, à Marseille, dont l’objectif est de renseigner les pratiques balnéaires sur les plages urbaines de villes méditerranéennes. Accompagnés de données d’enquête sur les pratiques et les profils des usagers, ces chiffres de fréquentation constituent un corpus inédit et précieux pour comprendre le fonctionnement des plages et concevoir des politiques de gestion adaptées.

Abstract: Optimal control of a solar sail orbiting around a fixed center of mass is considered. The sail is modelled as a plane surface with two sides having similar optical properties. The control is assumed to be the attitude of the sail and is so represented as an element of the projective plane. Mapping this plane to compute the actual force generated by a given attitude results in a generally non-convex set of admissible control values. A suitable convex relaxation is introduced to study the optimality system associated with maximising the change of the sail orbital parameters in a given direction along one orbit. Building on previous works, a refined analysis of the control structure is given. In order to compute effective solutions, a multiple shooting approach is retained that is well suited for systems with a sequence of switchings between various control subarcs. Three issues are addressed: initialisation of shooting by means a tailored SDP relaxation that takes advantage of good convergence properties of modern convex optimisation algorithms; changes in the control structure that are accommodated by coupling shooting with differential continuation; implicit character of the Hamiltonian maximisation when using Pontrjagin maximum principle that is taken care of by incorporating the associated equation for the dynamical feedback into the shooting procedure. The method is illustrated on an example from JPL for which the sail inclination is optimally changed over one orbital period.

Abstract: submitted and accepted; International audience; Fluid migration strongly influences gas hydrate occurrences, increasing concentrations in proportion to gas supply. An upward flow of gas-rich fluids is also central to models proposed to account for the formation of venting features within the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ), and for the presence or absence at its based of bottom simulating reflections (BSRs). These models are being tested by the SEAGAS project, an EC-funded collaboration of French and Brazilian research groups, which has examined gas hydrate systems within three deep-sea depocentres : the Nile fan in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Amazon fan and the Rio Grande cone on the Atlantic margin of Brazil. In each depocentre, rapid deposition has driven different forms of gravitational collapse above deep detachments. Each contains a different association of BSRs and venting features. On the Nile fan, a faint BSR of limited extent (3000 km 2 , water depths 2000-2500 m) contrasts with more widespread evidence of gas hydrates (in well logs) and fluid vents (pockmarks, mud volcanoes); the relation to pre-and post-Messinian collapse structures is unclear. On the Amazon fan, elongate BSR patches (total area 6700 km 2 , water depths 750-2250 m) coincide with the crests of an arcuate thrust-fold belt on the upper fan, which host mud volcanoes and other seafloor vents; no BSR is observed below the collapse belt on the mid-to lower fan. On the Rio Grande cone, a regional BSR (45,000 km 2 , water depths 500-3500 m) spans paired extensional and compressive belts, the former including fault-controlled fluid vents (pockmarks). In each area, BSR inversion yields temperature gradients elevated up to 5 times background values via long-wavelength (10 0-10 1 km) variations that, on the Brazilian margin, follow structural trends. We argue that these observations can be explained in terms of tectonic-and/or compaction-driven variations in the upward flow of warm fluids containing dissolved and/or free gas, which control the formation (or not) of BSRs and, in places, of gas vents. We hypothesise that temporal variations in fluid flow will change GHSZ thickness from below; bottom-up thinning will release gas and water from hydrate-rich sediments, potentially destabilising large volumes of slope sediments.
