This paper derives an achievable rate-distortion (R-D) region for the state-dependent discrete memoryless multiple access channel (SD-DMMAC), where the generalized feedback and causal side information are present at encoders, and the decoder performs the joint task of message decoding and state estimation. The Markov coding and backward-forward two-stage decoding schemes are adopted in the proof. Split federated learning (SFL) is a compute-efficient paradigm in distributed machine learning (ML), where components of large ML models are outsourced to remote servers. A significant challenge in SFL, particularly when deployed over wireless channels, is the susceptibility of transmitted model parameters to adversarial jamming that could jeopardize the learning process. This is particularly pronounced for word embedding parameters in large language models (LLMs), which are crucial for language understanding. In this paper, rigorous insights are provided into the influence of jamming LLM word embeddings in SFL by deriving an expression for the ML training loss divergence and showing that it is upper-bounded by the mean squared error (MSE). Based on this analysis, a physical layer framework is developed for resilient SFL with LLMs (R-SFLLM) over wireless networks. R-SFLLM leverages wireless sensing data to gather information on the jamming directions-of-arrival (DoAs) for the purpose of devising a novel, sensing-assisted anti-jamming strategy while jointly optimizing beamforming, user scheduling, and resource allocation. Extensive experiments using BERT and RoBERTa models demonstrate R-SFLLM's effectiveness, achieving close-to-baseline performance across various natural language processing (NLP) tasks and datasets. The proposed methodology further introduces an adversarial training component, where controlled noise exposure significantly enhances the LLM's resilience to perturbed parameters during training. The results show that more noise-sensitive models, such as RoBERTa, benefit from this feature, especially when resource allocation is unfair. It is also shown that worst-case jamming in particular translates into worst-case model outcomes, thereby necessitating the need for jamming-resilient SFL protocols.

Native jamming mitigation is essential for addressing security and resilience in future 6G wireless networks. In this paper a resilient-by-design framework for effective anti-jamming in MIMO-OFDM wireless communications is introduced. A novel approach that integrates information from wireless sensing services to develop anti-jamming strategies, which do not rely on any prior information or assumptions on the adversary's concrete setup, is explored. To this end, a method that replaces conventional approaches to noise covariance estimation in anti-jamming with a surrogate covariance model is proposed, which instead incorporates sensing information on the jamming signal's directions-of-arrival (DoAs) to provide an effective approximation of the true jamming strategy. The study further focuses on integrating this novel, sensing-assisted approach into the joint optimization of beamforming, user scheduling and power allocation for a multi-user MIMO-OFDM uplink setting. Despite the NP-hard nature of this optimization problem, it can be effectively solved using an iterative water-filling approach. In order to assess the effectiveness of the proposed sensing-assisted jamming mitigation, the corresponding worst-case jamming strategy is investigated, which aims to minimize the total user sum-rate. Experimental simulations eventually affirm the robustness of our approach against both worst-case and barrage jamming, demonstrating its potential to address a wide range of jamming scenarios. This manuscript investigates the information-theoretic limits of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), aiming for simultaneous reliable communication and precise channel state estimation. We model such a system with a state-dependent discrete memoryless channel (SD-DMC) with present or absent channel feedback and generalized side information at the transmitter and the receiver, where the joint task of message decoding and state estimation is performed at the receiver. The relationship between the achievable communication rate and estimation error, the capacity-distortion (C-D) trade-off, is characterized across different causality levels of the side information. This framework is shown to be capable of modeling various practical scenarios by assigning the side information with different meanings, including monostatic and bistatic radar systems. The analysis is then extended to the two-user degraded broadcast channel, and we derive an achievable C-D region that is tight under certain conditions. To solve the optimization problem arising in the computation of C-D functions/regions, we propose a proximal block coordinate descent (BCD) method, prove its convergence to a stationary point, and derive a stopping criterion. Finally, several representative examples are studied to demonstrate the versatility of our framework and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

In this paper, a digital twinning framework for indoor integrated sensing, communications, and robotics is proposed, designed, and implemented. Besides leveraging powerful robotics and ray-tracing technologies, the framework also enables integration with real-world sensors and reactive updates triggered by changes in the environment. The framework is designed with commercial, off-the-shelf components in mind, thus facilitating experimentation in the different areas of communication, sensing, and robotics. In this paper, we investigate the fundamental limits of MIMO-OFDM integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems based on a Bayesian Cram\'er-Rao bound (BCRB) analysis. We derive the BCRB for joint channel parameter estimation and data symbol detection, in which a performance trade-off between both functionalities is observed. We formulate the optimization problem for a linear precoder design and propose the stochastic Riemannian gradient descent (SRGD) approach to solve the non-convex problem. We analyze the optimality conditions and show that SRGD ensures convergence with high probability. The simulation results verify our analyses and also demonstrate a fast convergence speed. We address the resilience of future 6G MIMO communications by considering an uplink scenario where multiple legitimate transmitters try to communicate with a base station in the presence of an adversarial jammer. The jammer possesses full knowledge about the system and the physical parameters of the legitimate link, while the base station only knows the UL-channels and the angle-of-arrival (AoA) of the jamming signals. Furthermore, the legitimate transmitters are oblivious to the fact that jamming takes place, thus the burden of guaranteeing resilience falls on the receiver. For this case we derive one optimal jamming strategy that aims to minimize the rate of the strongest user and multiple receive strategies, one based on a lower bound on the achievable signal-to-interference-to-noise-ratio (SINR), one based on a zero-forcing (ZF) design, and one based on a minimum SINR constraint. Numerical studies show that the proposed anti-jamming approaches ensure that the sum rate of the system is much higher than without protection, even when the jammer has considerably more transmit power and even if the jamming signals come from the same direction as those of the legitimate users., Comment: Accepted to 3rd IEEE International Symposium on Joint Communications & Sensing

Wireless channel sensing is one of the key enablers for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) which helps communication networks understand the surrounding environment. In this work, we consider MIMO-OFDM systems and aim to design optimal and robust waveforms for accurate channel parameter estimation given allocated OFDM resources. The Fisher information matrix (FIM) is derived first, and the waveform design problem is formulated by maximizing the log determinant of the FIM. We then consider the uncertainty in the parameters and state the stochastic optimization problem for a robust design. We propose the Riemannian Exact Penalty Method via Smoothing (REPMS) and its stochastic version SREPMS to solve the constrained non-convex problems. In simulations, we show that the REPMS yields comparable results to the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) but with a much shorter running time. Finally, the designed robust waveforms using SREMPS are investigated, and are shown to have a good performance under channel perturbations., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. We consider the task of converting different digital descriptions of analog bandlimited signals and systems into each other, with a rigorous application of mathematical computability theory. Albeit very fundamental, the problem appears in the scope of digital twinning, an emerging concept in the field of digital processing of analog information that is regularly mentioned as one of the key enablers for next-generation cyber-physical systems and their areas of application. In this context, we prove that essential quantities such as the peak-to-average power ratio and the bounded-input/bounded-output norm, which determine the behavior of the real-world analog system, cannot generally be determined from the system's digital twin, depending on which of the above-mentioned descriptions is chosen. As a main result, we characterize the algorithmic strength of Shannon's sampling type representation as digital twin implementation and also introduce a new digital twin implementation of analog signals and systems. We show there exist two digital descriptions, both of which uniquely characterize a certain analog system, such that one description can be algorithmically converted into the other, but not vice versa.

The bandwidth of a signal is an important physical property that is of relevance in many signal- and information-theoretic applications. In this paper we study questions related to the computability of the bandwidth of computable bandlimited signals. To this end we employ the concept of Turing computability, which exactly describes what is theoretically feasible and can be computed on a digital computer. Recently, it has been shown that there exist computable bandlimited signals with finite energy, the actual bandwidth of which is not a computable number, and hence cannot be computed on a digital computer. In this work, we consider the most general class of band-limited signals, together with different computable representations thereof. Among other things, our analysis includes a characterization of the arithmetic complexity of the bandwidth of such signals and yields a negative answer to the question of whether it is at least possible to compute non-trivial upper or lower bounds for the bandwidth of a bandlimited signal. Furthermore, we relate the problem of bandwidth computation to the theory of oracle machines. In particular, we consider halting and totality oracles, which belong to the most frequently investigated oracle machines in the theory of computation.

Ubiquitous to most molecular scattering methods is the challenge to retrieve bond distance and angle from the scattering signals since this requires convergence of pattern matching algorithms or fitting methods. This problem is typically exacerbated when imaging larger molecules or for dynamic systems with little a priori knowledge. Here, we employ laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED) which is a powerful means to determine the precise atomic configuration of an isolated gas-phase molecule with picometre spatial and attosecond temporal precision. We introduce a simple molecular retrieval method, which is based only on the identification of critical points in the oscillating molecular interference scattering signal that is extracted directly from the laboratory-frame photoelectron spectrum. The method is compared with a Fourier-based retrieval method, and we show that both methods correctly retrieve the asymmetrically stretched and bent field-dressed configuration of the asymmetric top molecule carbonyl sulfide (OCS), which is confirmed by our quantum-classical calculations.

An electrical pulse E(t) is completely defined by its time-dependent amplitude and polarisation direction. For optical pulses the manipulation and characterisation of the light polarisation state is fundamental due to its relevance in several scientific and technological fields. In this work we demonstrate the complete temporal reconstruction of the electric field of few-cycle pulses with a complex time-dependent polarisation. Our experimental approach is based on extreme ultraviolet interferometry with isolated attosecond pulses and on the demonstration that the motion of an attosecond electron wave packet is sensitive to perturbing fields only along the direction of its motion. By exploiting the sensitivity of interferometric techniques and by controlling the emission and acceleration direction of the wave packet, pulses with energies as low as few hundreds of nanojoules can be reconstructed. Our approach opens the possibility to completely characterise the electric field of the pulses typically used in visible pump-probe spectroscopy.

We demonstrate the complete reconstruction of the electric field of visible-infrared pulses with energy as low as a few tens of nanojoules. The technique allows for the reconstruction of the instantaneous electric field vector direction and magnitude, thus giving access to the characterisation of pulses with an arbitrary time-dependent polarisation state. The ability to directly follow and time resolve the rearrangement of the nuclei within molecules is a frontier of science that requires atomic spatial and few-femtosecond temporal resolutions. While laser induced electron diffraction can meet these requirements, it was recently concluded that molecules with particular orbital symmetries (such as {\pi}g) cannot be imaged using purely backscattering electron wave packets without molecular alignment. Here, we demonstrate, in direct contradiction to these findings, that the orientation and shape of molecular orbitals presents no impediment for retrieving molecular structure with adequate sampling of the momentum transfer space. We overcome previous issues by showcasing retrieval of the structure of randomly oriented O2 and C2H2 molecules, with {\pi}g and {\pi}u symmetries, respectively, and where their ionisation probabilities do not maximise along their molecular axes. While this removes a serious bottleneck for laser induced diffraction imaging, we find unexpectedly strong back scattering contributions from low-Z atoms.

In this paper we analyze the approximation of stable linear time-invariant systems, like the Hilbert transform, by sampling series for bandlimited functions in the Paley-Wiener space $\mathcal{PW}_{\pi}^{1}$. It is known that there exist systems and functions such that the approximation process is weakly divergent, i.e., divergent for certain subsequences. Here we strengthen this result by proving strong divergence, i.e., divergence for all subsequences. Further, in case of divergence, we give the divergence speed. We consider sampling at Nyquist rate as well as oversampling with adaptive choice of the kernel. This paper gives an account of our progress towards performing femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron diffraction on gas-phase molecules in a pump-probe setup combining optical lasers and an X-ray Free-Electron Laser. We present results of two experiments aimed at measuring photoelectron angular distributions of laser-aligned 1-ethynyl-4-fluorobenzene (C8H5F) and dissociating, laseraligned 1,4-dibromobenzene (C6H4Br2) molecules and discuss them in the larger context of photoelectron diffraction on gas-phase molecules. We also show how the strong nanosecond laser pulse used for adiabatically laser-aligning the molecules influences the measured electron and ion spectra and angular distributions, and discuss how this may affect the outcome of future time-resolved photoelectron diffraction experiments., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, Faraday Discussions 171

The photon-ion merged-beams technique has been employed at the new Photon-Ion spectrometer at PETRA III (PIPE) for measuring multiple photoionization of Xe$^{q+}$ (q=1-5) ions. Total ionization cross sections have been obtained on an absolute scale for the dominant ionization reactions of the type h\nu + Xe$^{q+}$ $\to$ Xe$^{r+}$ + (q-r) e$^-$ with product charge states q+2 $\le$ r $\le$ q+5. Prominent ionization features are observed in the photon-energy range 650-750 eV, which are associated with excitation or ionization of an inner-shell 3d electron. Single-configuration Dirac-Fock calculations agree quantitatively with the experimental cross sections for non-resonant photoabsorption, but fail to reproduce all details of the measured ionization resonance structures., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, submitted for publication to J. It is a long-standing dream of scientists to capture the ultra-fast dynamics of molecular or chemical reactions in real time and to make a molecular movie. With free-electron lasers delivering extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light at unprecedented intensities, in combination with pump-probe schemes, it is now possible to visualize structural changes on the femtosecond time scale in photo-excited molecules. In hydrocarbons the absorption of a single photon may trigger the migration of a hydrogen atom within the molecule. Here, such a reaction was filmed in acetylene molecules (C2H2) showing a partial migration of one of the protons along the carbon backbone which is consistent with dynamics calculations on ab initio potential energy surfaces. In this paper we analyze the behavior of system approximation processes for stable linear time-invariant (LTI) systems and signals in the Paley-Wiener space PW_\pi^1. We consider approximation processes, where the input signal is not directly used to generate the system output, but instead a sequence of numbers is used that is generated from the input signal by measurement functionals. We consider classical sampling which corresponds to a pointwise evaluation of the signal, as well as several more general measurement functionals. We show that a stable system approximation is not possible for pointwise sampling, because there exist signals and systems such that the approximation process diverges. This remains true even with oversampling. However, if more general measurement functionals are considered, a stable approximation is possible if oversampling is used. The lifetime of interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) [L. S. Cederbaum et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 4778 (1997)] in Ne_2 is determined via an extreme ultraviolet pump-probe experiment at the Free-Electron Laser in Hamburg. The pump pulse creates a 2s inner-shell vacancy in one of the two Ne atoms, whereupon the ionized dimer undergoes ICD resulting in a repulsive Ne^{+}(2p^{-1}) - Ne^{+}(2p^{-1}) state, which is probed with a second pulse, removing a further electron. The yield of coincident Ne^{+} - Ne^{2+} pairs is recorded as a function of the pump-probe delay, allowing us to deduce the ICD lifetime of the Ne_{2}^{+}(2s^{-1}) state to be (150 +/- 50) fs in agreement with quantum calculations., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by PRL on July 11th, 2013

Photoabsorption by and fluorescence of the K{\alpha} transitions in highly charged iron ions are essential mechanisms for X-ray radiation transfer in astrophysical environments. We study photoabsorption due to the main K{\alpha} transitions in highly charged iron ions from heliumlike to fluorinelike (Fe 24+...17+) using monochromatic X-rays around 6.6 keV at the PETRA III synchrotron photon source. Natural linewidths were determined with hitherto unattained accuracy. Dielectronic and higher-order resonant electron recombination processes including a K-shell excitation were systematically measured at high resolution in electron beam ion traps. Storing highly charged Ar, Fe, and Kr ions, the dependence on atomic number Z of the contribution of these processes to the total recombination cross section was studied and compared with theoretical calculations. We present a method to measure the decay rate of the first excited vibrational state of simple polar molecular ions being part of a Coulomb crystal in a cryogenic linear Paul trap. Specifically, we have monitored the decay of the $|\nu$=$1,J$=$1 \rangle_X$ towards the $|\nu$=$0,J$=$0 \rangle_X$ level in MgH$^+$ by saturated laser excitation of the $|\nu$=$0,J$=$2 \rangle_X$-$|\nu$=$1,J$=$1 \rangle_X$ transition followed by state selective resonance enhanced two-photon dissociation out of the $|\nu$=$0,J$=$2 \rangle_X$ level. The technique enables the determination of decay rates, and thus absorption strengths, with an accuracy at the few percent level., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures
