Abstract: Regularly occurring flood events do have a history in Santiago de Chile, the capital city of Chile and study area for this research. The analysis of flood events, the resulting damage and its causes are crucial prerequisites for the development of risk prevention measures. The goal of this research is to empirically investigate the vulnerability towards floods in Santiago de Chile as one component of flood risk. The analysis and assessment of vulnerability is based on the application of a multi-scale (individual, household, municipal level) set of indicators and the use of a broad range of data. The case-specific set of indicators developed in this study shows the relevant variables and their interrelations influencing the flood vulnerability in the study area. It provides a decision support tool for stakeholders and allows for monitoring and evaluating changes over time. The paper outlines how GIS, census, and remote sensing data as well as household surveys and expert interviews are used as an information base for the derivation of a vulnerability map for two municipalities located in the eastern part of Santiago de Chile. The generation of vulnerability maps representing the two different perspectives of local decision makers (experts) and affected households is exemplified and discussed using the developed methodology.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung Hintergrund: Urbanisierung gehört zu den wichtigsten globalen Veränderungen, denen die Menschheit in den kommenden Jahrzehnten ausgesetzt sein wird. Diese Entwicklung ist rasant – und sie ist gesundheitsrelevant, mit weit reichenden Konsequenzen für unser psychisches Befinden. Einige stressassoziierte psychische Erkrankungen zeigen ein erhöhtes Auftreten bei Stadtbewohnern. Methode: Es ist daher höchste Zeit, den Einfluss von Stadtleben auf das psychische Wohlbefinden sowie die Rolle urbaner Stressoren besser zu verstehen. Hierzu ist ein methodischer Schulterschluss zwischen Architektur, Stadtplanung, Neurowissenschaften und Medizin notwendig, für den wir den Begriff der „Neurourbanistik“ vorschlagen. Neurourbanistik als neue akademische Perspektive kann dazu beitragen, angemessen und effektiv auf die Herausforderungen einer urbanisierten Welt zu reagieren. Die Themen neurourbanistischer Forschung umfassen dabei Grundlagenforschung, Epidemiologie und Public Health genauso wie experimentelle Stressforschung und Präventionsforschung. Abstract: ZusammenfassungVon der Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit-/Hyperaktivitätsstörung (ADHS) sind in Deutschland 2 bis 7% der Kinder und Jugendlichen betroffen. Bei mindestens einem Drittel der diagnostizierten Kinder persistieren die ADHS-Symptome bis ins Erwachsenenalter. Die häufigste medikamentöse Behandlungsmethode ist die Psychostimulanzientherapie, die aber nicht unumstritten ist und von vielen Eltern abgelehnt wird. Seit etwa 20 Jahren wird diskutiert, ob ein Mangel an langkettigen mehrfach ungesättigten Fettsäuren (LCPUFAs) ein Risikofaktor für die Entstehung von ADHS sein könnte.Das Ziel des vorliegenden Übersichtsartikels ist eine Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse aus Interventionsstudien, die Hinweise zur Wirksamkeit einer LCPUFA-Supplementierung als Therapieoption bei Kindern mit ADHS zu geben.

Abstract: Causality, or the relation of cause and effect, is a fundamental notion in science, planning, and management. It is also a fundamental notion in impact assessment, as it relates action proposals with environmental impacts. Building on recent research about causality in impact assessment, this article turns to Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and examines eleven guidance documents to see whether and how they handle causality. The findings of this research, in line with results from similar research in EIA, indicate a weak handling of causality with regards to instruction, obligation, and theoretical support. The recommendations are to investigate the reasons for the observed trend, as there is no evidence in the guidance documents themselves, and to have the fundamental premise of causality in impact assessment safeguarded in future SEA guidance.

Abstract: The GEO 600 gravitational wave detector uses advanced technologies including signal recycling and monolithic fused-silica suspensions to achieve a sensitivity close to the kilometre scale LIGO and VIRGO detectors. As soon as the design sensitivity of GEO 600 is reached, the detector will be operated as part of the worldwide network to acquire data of scientific interest. The limited infrastructure at the GEO site does not allow for a major upgrade of the detector. Hence the GEO collaboration decided to improve the sensitivity of the GEO detector by small sequential upgrades some of which will be tested in prototypes first. The development, test and installation of these upgrades are named 'The GEO-HF Project.' This paper describes the upgrades considered in the GEO-HF project as well as their scientific reasons. We will describe the changes in the GEO 600 infrastructure and the prototype work that is planned to support these upgrades. Finally, we will point to some laboratory research that identifies new technologies or optical configurations that might undergo a transition into detector subsystems within the GEO-HF project.

Abstract: Of all the large interferometric gravitational-wave detectors, the German/British project GEO600 is the only one which uses dual recycling. During the four weeks of the international S4 data-taking run it reached an instrumental duty cycle of 97% with a peak sensitivity of 7 × 10-22 Hz-1/2 at 1 kHz. This paper describes the status during S4 and improvements thereafter.

Abstract: The GEO 600 laser interferometer with 600 m armlength is currently being commissioned as a part of a worldwide network of gravitational wave detectors. Due to the use of advanced technologies such as signal recycling and multiple pendulum suspensions with a monolithic last stage the anticipated sensitivity of GEO 600 is close to the initial sensitivity of km baseline detectors. This paper describes the status of the detector as of November 2003 with special emphasis on its performance during the first serious data-taking periods and on the experimental challenges encountered during the commissioning of the dual-recycled detector.

11. Hardware injection of simulated continuous gravitational wave signals for GEO 600

Abstract: Search algorithms for continuous gravitational waves are best tested by injecting simulated signals into the detector hardware. These signals need high phase and amplitude stability for reliable calibration. At GEO 600 we have developed an instrument to inject a simulated pulsar signal with a phase error less than 1% of 2π from the correct signal phase. The injection can run over several months and can recover from interruptions. A key component of the instrument is an analogue electronic signal that can be applied to an actuator of one of the test masses of the interferometer. For the generation of this signal a microcontroller is operated as a direct digital frequency synthesiser (DDS). A digital phase locked loop (PLL) on a control computer controls the phase accumulator of the microcontroller via its phase increment register. The signal to be injected is calculated within the LIGO/LSC algorithm library on the control computer.

Abstract: GEO 600 is an interferometric gravitational wave detector which, when completed, will employ a novel, dual-recycled optical scheme allowing its optical response to be tuned over a range of frequencies. The accurate calibration of the sensitivity of GEO to gravitational waves is a critical part of preparing GEO data for exchange with other detectors worldwide and for the extraction of scientific results. The final optical scheme that will be used in GEO will make it necessary to combine more than one output signal to optimally recover a calibrated strain channel. An on-line calibration scheme has been developed with a view to covering both the power-recycled and dual-recycled interferometer configurations of GEO. The recent worldwide coincident science run (S1) proved an excellent opportunity to test the calibration scheme of GEO in a power-recycled mode. The ability to track and study the stability of the calibration over long time scales was invaluable. A number of areas have been highlighted where improvement is necessary, but the scheme proved successful and produced a continuous real-time h(t) for the entire duration of the S1 science run. Consideration of the errors discussed throughout this article lead to a calibration accuracy for this science run of around 4% at high frequencies (>200 Hz) and about 6% for frequencies between about 50 and 200 Hz. This article presents the on-line calibration scheme that was developed for, and employed during, the recent S1 science run. The hardware signal injection is presented in detail followed by the on-line analysis method that allows real-time calibration of this interferometer configuration. The results of the calibration process are discussed and attention is drawn to the successes and to the points where improvement can be made.

Abstract: In 2002, the interferometric gravitational wave detector GEO 600 took part in a coincident science run (S1) with other detectors world-wide. When completed, GEO will employ a dual-recycling scheme which will allow its peak sensitivity to be tuned over a range of frequencies in the detection band. Still in the commissioning phase, GEO was operated as a power-recycled Michelson for the duration of S1. The accurate calibration of the sensitivity of GEO to gravitational waves is a critical step in preparing GEO data for exchange with other detectors forming a world-wide detector network. An online calibration scheme has been developed to perform real-time calibration of the power-recycled GEO detector. This scheme will later be extended to cover the more complex case of the dual-recycled interferometer in which multiple output signals will need to be combined to optimally recover a calibrated strain channel. This report presents an outline of the calibration scheme that was used during S1. Also presented are results of detector characterization work that arises naturally from the calibration work.

Abstract: GEO 600 is an interferometric gravitational wave detector with 600 m arms, which will employ a novel, dual-recycled optical scheme allowing its optical response to be tuned over a range of frequencies (from ~100 Hz to a few kHz). Additional advanced technologies, such as multiple pendulum suspensions with monolithic bottom stages, make the anticipated sensitivity of GEO 600 comparable to initial detectors with kilometre arm lengths. This paper discusses briefly the design of GEO, reports on the status of the detector up to the end of 2002 with particular focus on participation in coincident engineering and science runs with LIGO detectors. The plans leading to a fully optimized detector and participation in future coincident science runs are briefly outlined.

Abstract: The GEO 600 laser interferometer with 600 m armlength is part of a worldwide network of gravitational wave detectors. Due to the use of advanced technologies like multiple pendulum suspensions with a monolithic last stage and signal recycling, the anticipated sensitivity of GEO 600 is close to the initial sensitivity of detectors with several kilometres armlength. This paper describes the subsystems of GEO 600, the status of the detector by September 2001 and the plans towards the first science run.

Abstract: The LIGO interferometers are operating as gravitational wave observatories, with a noise level near an order of magnitude of the goal and the first scientific data recently taken. This data has been analyzed for four different categories of gravitational wave sources; millisecond bursts, inspiralling binary neutron stars, periodic waves from a known pulsar, and stochastic background. Research and development is also underway for the next generation LIGO detector, Advanced LIGO.

Abstract: We report on a search for gravitational waves from binary black hole inspirals in the data from the second science run of the LIGO interferometers. The search focused on binary systems with component masses between 3 and 20 solar masses. Optimally oriented binaries with distances up to 1 Mpc could be detected with efficiency of at least 90%. We found no events that could be identified as gravitational waves in the 385.6 hours of data that we searched., 18 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: Interferometer mirror displacement induced by radiation pressure is used to demonstrate an alternative calibration method for the GEO 600 detector. The photon calibrator utilizes an amplitude modulated laser diode with up to 1.4 W output power at a wavelength of 1035 nm. The achieved accuracy of the strain amplitude calibration is dominated by the laser power calibration error, which is in the range of +/- 4% for the measurements presented in this Letter. Abstract: We search for coincident gravitational wave signals from inspiralling neutron star binaries using LIGO and TAMA300 data taken during early 2003. Using a simple trigger exchange method, we perform an inter-collaboration coincidence search during times when TAMA300 and only one of the LIGO sites were operational. We find no evidence of any gravitational wave signals. We place an observational upper limit on the rate of binary neutron star coalescence with component masses between 1 and 3 M_sun of 49 per year per Milky Way equivalent galaxy at a 90% confidence level. Abstract: We use data from the second science run of the LIGO gravitational-wave detectors to search for the gravitational waves from primordial black hole (PBH) binary coalescence with component masses in the range 0.2--$1.0 M_\odot$. The analysis requires a signal to be found in the data from both LIGO observatories, according to a set of coincidence criteria. No inspiral signals were found. Assuming a spherical halo with core radius 5 kpc extending to 50 kpc containing non-spinning black holes with masses in the range 0.2--$1.0 M_\odot$, we place an observational upper limit on the rate of PBH coalescence of 63 per year per Milky Way halo (MWH) with 90% confidence., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Abstract: We use 373 hours ($\approx$ 15 days) of data from the second science run of the LIGO gravitational-wave detectors to search for signals from binary neutron star coalescences within a maximum distance of about 1.5 Mpc, a volume of space which includes the Andromeda Galaxy and other galaxies of the Local Group of galaxies. This analysis requires a signal to be found in data from detectors at the two LIGO sites, according to a set of coincidence criteria. The background (accidental coincidence rate) is determined from the data and is used to judge the significance of event candidates. No inspiral gravitational wave events were identified in our search. Using a population model which includes the Local Group, we establish an upper limit of less than 47 inspiral events per year per Milky Way equivalent galaxy with 90% confidence for non-spinning binary neutron star systems with component masses between 1 and 3 $M_\odot$., 20 pages, 12 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Abstract: The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) has performed a third science run with much improved sensitivities of all three interferometers. We present an analysis of approximately 200 hours of data acquired during this run, used to search for a stochastic background of gravitational radiation. We place upper bounds on the energy density stored as gravitational radiation for three different spectral power laws. For the flat spectrum, our limit of Omega_0, 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: We perform a search for gravitational wave bursts using data from the second science run of the LIGO detectors, using a method based on a wavelet time-frequency decomposition. This search is sensitive to bursts of duration much less than a second and with frequency content in the 100-1100Hz range. It features significant improvements in the instrument sensitivity and in the analysis pipeline with respect to the burst search previously reported by LIGO. Improvements in the search method allow exploring weaker signals, relative to the detector noise floor, while maintaining a low false alarm rate, O(0.1) microHz. The sensitivity in terms of the root-sum-square (rss) strain amplitude lies in the range of hrss~10^{-20} - 10^{-19}/sqrt(Hz) No gravitational wave signals were detected in 9.98 days of analyzed data. We interpret the search result in terms of a frequentist upper limit on the rate of detectable gravitational wave bursts at the level of 0.26 events per day at 90% confidence level. We combine this limit with measurements of the detection efficiency for given waveform morphologies in order to yield rate versus strength exclusion curves as well as to establish order-of-magnitude distance sensitivity to certain modeled astrophysical sources. Both the rate upper limit and its applicability to signal strengths improve our previously reported limits and reflect the most sensitive broad-band search for untriggered and unmodeled gravitational wave bursts to date., 23 pages, 14 figures, to be submitted to Phys Rev D

Abstract: The GEO 600 gravitational wave detector located near Hannover in Germany is part of an international network of gravitational wave observatories. As more and more of these detectors approach their final configuration, the focus is shifted from commissioning to detector characterization. At the moment, GEO 600, the first detector using advanced technologies such as dual recycling, is preparing for a long data-taking period starting at the beginning of summer 2006. In this paper, we give an overview of detector commissioning and the detector characterization work of GEO 600 for the period between March 2005 and February 2006.

Abstract: We have performed a search for bursts of gravitational waves associated with the very bright Gamma Ray Burst GRB030329, using the two detectors at the LIGO Hanford Observatory. Our search covered the most sensitive frequency range of the LIGO detectors (approximately 80-2048 Hz), and we specifically targeted signals shorter than 150 ms. Our search algorithm looks for excess correlated power between the two interferometers and thus makes minimal assumptions about the gravitational waveform. We observed no candidates with gravitational wave signal strength larger than a pre-determined threshold. We report frequency dependent upper limits on the strength of the gravitational waves associated with GRB030329. Near the most sensitive frequency region, around 250 Hz, our root-sum-square (RSS) gravitational wave strain sensitivity for optimally polarized bursts was better than h_RSS = 6E-21 Hz^{-1/2}. Abstract: We report on the first joint search for gravitational waves by the TAMA and LIGO collaborations. We looked for millisecond-duration unmodelled gravitational-wave bursts in 473 hr of coincident data collected during early 2003. No candidate signals were found. We set an upper limit of 0.12 events per day on the rate of detectable gravitational-wave bursts, at 90% confidence level. From simulations, we estimate that our detector network was sensitive to bursts with root-sum-square strain amplitude above approximately 1-3x10^{-19} Hz^{-1/2} in the frequency band 700-2000 Hz. We describe the details of this collaborative search, with particular emphasis on its advantages and disadvantages compared to searches by LIGO and TAMA separately using the same data. Benefits include a lower background and longer observation time, at some cost in sensitivity and bandwidth. We also demonstrate techniques for performing coincidence searches with a heterogeneous network of detectors with different noise spectra and orientations. These techniques include using coordinated signal injections to estimate the network sensitivity, and tuning the analysis to maximize the sensitivity and the livetime, subject to constraints on the background., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, to be submitted to Phys Rev D. Abstract: We perform a wide parameter space search for continuous gravitational waves over the whole sky and over a large range of values of the frequency and the first spin-down parameter. Our search method is based on the Hough transform, which is a semi-coherent, computationally efficient, and robust pattern recognition technique. We apply this technique to data from the second science run of the LIGO detectors and our final results are all-sky upper limits on the strength of gravitational waves emitted by unknown isolated spinning neutron stars on a set of narrow frequency bands in the range 200-$400 $Hz. The best upper limit on the gravitational wave strain amplitude that we obtain in this frequency range is $4.43\times 10^{-23}$., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev. D

Abstract: We place direct upper limits on the amplitude of gravitational waves from 28 isolated radio pulsars by a coherent multi-detector analysis of the data collected during the second science run of the LIGO interferometric detectors. These are the first direct upper limits for 26 of the 28 pulsars. We use coordinated radio observations for the first time to build radio-guided phase templates for the expected gravitational wave signals. The unprecedented sensitivity of the detectors allow us to set strain upper limits as low as a few times $10^{-24}$. These strain limits translate into limits on the equatorial ellipticities of the pulsars, which are smaller than $10^{-5}$ for the four closest pulsars., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: Since December 2003, the gravitational-wave detector GEO 600 has routinely operated in the dual recycled mode, using a lock acquisition scheme based on the detection of optical sideband power at the dark port. With the detector locking very robustly, the current commissioning work is entirely dedicated to sensitivity improvements. We give a brief overview of the GEO 600 detector, the implementation of dual recycling, and summarize recent work regarding the increase in the detector sensitivity.

Abstract: Data collected by the GEO 600 and LIGO interferometric gravitational wave detectors during their first observational science run were searched for continuous gravitational waves from the pulsar J1939+2134 at twice its rotation frequency. Two independent analysis methods were used and are demonstrated in this paper: a frequency domain method and a time domain method. Both achieve consistent null results, placing new upper limits on the strength of the pulsar’s gravitational wave emission. A model emission mechanism is used to interpret the limits as a constraint on the pulsar’s equatorial ellipticity.

Abstract: We report on a search for gravitational waves from coalescing compact binary systems in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. The analysis uses data taken by two of the three LIGO interferometers during the first LIGO science run and illustrates a method of setting upper limits on inspiral event rates using interferometer data. The analysis pipeline is described with particular attention to data selection and coincidence between the two interferometers. Abstract: For 17 days in August and September 2002, the LIGO and GEO interferometer gravitational wave detectors were operated in coincidence to produce their first data for scientific analysis. Although the detectors were still far from their design sensitivity levels, the data can be used to place better upper limits on the flux of gravitational waves incident on the earth than previous direct measurements. Abstract: The British–German interferometric gravitational-wave detector GEO600 uses two high-finesse triangular ring cavities of 8 m optical pathlength each, as an optical mode-cleaning system. The modecleaner system is housed in an ultrahigh-vacuum environment to avoid contamination of the optics and to minimize both the influence of refractive index variations of the air and acoustic coupling to the optics. To isolate the cavities from seismic noise, all optical components are suspended as double pendulums. These pendulums are damped at their resonance frequencies at the upper pendulum stage with magnet-coil actuators. A suspended reaction mass supports three coils matching magnets bonded onto the surface of one mirror of each cavity, allowing length control of the modecleaner cavities to maintain resonance with the laser light. A fully automated control system stabilizes the frequency of the slave laser to that of the master laser, the frequency of the master laser to the length of the first modecleaner and the length of the first to the length of the second modecleaner. The control system uses the Pound–Drever–Hall sideband technique and operates autonomously over long time periods with only infrequent human interaction. The duty cycle of the system was measured to be 99.7% during an 18 day period. The throughput of the whole modecleaner system is about 50%. In this article, we give an overview of the mechanical and optical setup and the achieved performance of the double modecleaner system.

The GEO 600 data acquisition system is described together with some software tools developed for doing detector characterization and data analysis. Abstract: We present the analysis of between 50 and 100 hrs of coincident interferometric strain data used to search for and establish an upper limit on a stochastic background of gravitational radiation. These data come from the first LIGO science run, during which all three LIGO interferometers were operated over a 2-week period spanning August and September of 2002. The method of cross-correlating the outputs of two interferometers is used for analysis. We describe in detail practical signal processing issues that arise when working with real data, and we establish an observational upper limit on a f^{-3} power spectrum of gravitational waves. Our 90% confidence limit is Omega_0 h_{100}^2 < 23 in the frequency band 40 to 314 Hz, where h_{100} is the Hubble constant in units of 100 km/sec/Mpc and Omega_0 is the gravitational wave energy density per logarithmic frequency interval in units of the closure density. This limit is approximately 10^4 times better than the previous, broadband direct limit using interferometric detectors, and nearly 3 times better than the best narrow-band bar detector limit. As LIGO and other worldwide detectors improve in sensitivity and attain their design goals, the analysis procedures described here should lead to stochastic background sensitivity levels of astrophysical interest., 26 pages, 17 figures

The data acquisition system is described and first results from the detector characterization work are being presented. We analysed environmental influences on the detector to determine noise propagation through the detector. Long-term monitoring allowed us to see long-timescale drifts in subsystems.

Abstract: The language game of landscape ecology entails several action-guiding verbs like “promote”, “enhance”, “restore”, “preserve”, “safeguard”, “ensure”, “upgrade” to name just a few. They are closely related to conceptions of what should be done. Due to this evaluative and protective character of landscape ecology and due to its connectivity with evaluations, planning, and decision making it seems urgent to add philosophical and ethical considerations to the overall transdisciplinary research program of landscape ecology. Due to the multi-facetted concept of landscape these considerations should be performed in a more reflective way. It is quite trivial to say that humans are responsible for the regions they inhabit since they are designing and planning of how to modify landscapes according to their objectives and values. The notion of responsibility is intrinsically related to values, obligations, and principles which are debated in ethics. These categories will be analyzed in Chapter 7.1.2. In a further step the underlying ethical aspects of different disciplinary perspectives will be outlined (see Chapter 7.1.3). At the end of this investigation it shall be asked how different perspectives are related to each other. Additionally, the relationship between landscape evaluation and the concept of sustainability will be explored (see Chapter 7.1.4). In a final section, it will be pointed out how the rightness of procedures and the goodness of outcomes are related in cultural debates about how to take responsible care of landscapes (see Chapter 7.1.5). It will be argued that a highly democratic and discursive approach in landscape planning could provide “good” outcomes if some general insights of environmental ethics are presupposed and taken seriously.

Abstract: Urbanization and especially megaurbanization is one of the most prominent phenomena and at the same time one of the great challenges of the 21st century as it leads to the evolution of increasingly complex urban settings. Spatially seen urban growth is frequently associated with an expansion of impervious surfaces, the loss of areas with higher infiltration capacities and therewith a severe impact on the ecosystem. Resulting land use/land cover changes frequently lead to an increase of hazards, such as floods, landslides and heat waves. At the same time, the growing amount of people and goods located in hazard prone areas intensifies the vulnerability and finally the risk towards natural forces. The understanding of risk and risk generation is regarded being a fundamental prerequisite for the induction of prevention and mitigation measures. Vulnerability analysis forming one part of the risk analysis in this study is understood as the analysis of physical and social fragility towards and a lack of coping capacities with the hazard. Vulnerability is regarded being a multi-scale and highly dynamic issue that can only be estimated using a variety of input data from different sources and on different spatial scales. The focus of this research is set on the analysis of urban vulnerability towards floods in the case of a river catchment in Santiago de Chile, where regularly occurring flood events pose a threat to people and urban infrastructure. Urban planning does neither consider the flood hazard nor the resulting risk in a sufficient manner. The potential of using planning tools as an instrument to prevent hazards is not tapped. With the goal to raise awareness for the possible lack of coping capacities of the elements at risk, a tool to identify areas with different vulnerabilities is being developed. Abstract: Air pollution with Particulate Matter (PM) causes serious environmental and especially health problems. According to the World Health Organization airborne particles have the potential to cause severe health risks as e.g. cardiorespiratory diseases and a shortening of life expectancy. PM differ with respect to their chemical components and their sizes. PM10 (aerodynamic diameter up to 10 mm) is able to infiltrate the bronchial tubes; PM 2.5 (aerodynamic diameter up to 2.5 10 mm) – the ‘respirable’ fraction of PM - is able to enter the lung and the pulmonary alveoli. In densely populated cities and city regions much more persons are affected by high PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations than in rural areas. Particulate matter has both natural and anthropogenic sources. In cities and city regions anthropogenic sources like power plants, domestic fuel, and especially traffic cause a large proportion of the PM load. Maximum PM loads occur in and beside roads with high traffic density. The increase of traffic is one component of global change, not only in Europe, but even more in the fast growing urban agglomerations of the developing countries. During the last decades, PM loads have been subject to scientific and political debate and to reduction measures. According to the European Directive on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe from 2008, emissions of PM10 and PM2.5 shall be reduced in order to improve human health conditions especially in densely populated areas. Regular measurements have to be carried out in zones and agglomerations where the longterm objectives for air pollutants including PM are exceeded. Many cities prepared or renewed clean air plans and installed ‘environmental zones’ where individual traffic is or will be restricted according to the emission rates of the respective vehicle. Abstract: Opportunities for urban biodiversity in dynamic cities In a worldwide perspective cities are confronted with drastic changes of its demographic development. This can be simply summarised under the terms „shrinking cities“ and „growing cities“. Both developments offer different opportunities to provide „adequate biodiversity“ e.g. as „recreational area and green spaces for the citizens“, as genetic resource or as conservation area for biodiversity. In this context the urban and peri-urban landscape ecological matrix has to be taken into account. Despite the fact that urban green spaces in inner cities are characterized by many „exotic species“ their recreational potential is not necessarily decreasing. But more „natural like“ green spaces in the outskirts of the cities have different recreational and biodiversity qualities, including more indigenous species and other recreational qualities. This indicates an urban to rural gradient concerning different kinds of biodiversity, its evaluation and perception. While shrinking cities offer the opportunity to provide adequate green space quantity for too densely built-up urban areas and for experiments with new design and species selection strategies the growing cities need the protection of indigenous biodiversity. The following two questions will be addressed in the proposed symposium: Which opportunities for „adequate biodiversity“ should be chosen in dynamic (growing or shrinking) cities? What are the citizen’s perceptions and expectations of the present urban and peri-urban biodiversity changes?

Abstract: Objective: Neurofilament light chains (NfL) and phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chains (pNfH), established as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in hospital-based amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) cohorts, are now surrogate markers in clinical trials. This study extends their evaluation to a population level, with the aim of advancing their full establishment and assessing the transferability of biomarker findings from controlled cohorts to real-world ALS populations., Methods: We measured serum NfL and pNfH levels in all ALS patients (n = 790) and general population controls (n = 570) with available baseline samples participating in the epidemiological ALS Registry Swabia, providing platform-specific (ELLA™) reference data and Z-scores for controls, as well as reference data, disease-specific Z-scores and longitudinal data in ALS. We evaluated the diagnostic and prognostic utility of neurofilaments and quantified the impact of ALS-related factors and non-ALS confounders., Results: Neurofilaments showed high diagnostic and prognostic utility at the population level, with NfL superior to pNfH. The novel concept of a population-based ALS Z-score significantly improved the prognostic utility compared to absolute raw values. Both biomarkers increased more strongly with age in controls than in ALS, and age adjustment improved diagnostic accuracy. Our data show that disease progression rates, ALS phenotype, body mass index (BMI), and renal function need to be considered when interpreting neurofilament levels; longitudinal neurofilament levels were generally stable in individual patients, especially when adjusted for age and baseline levels., Interpretation: Population-based assessment enhances the utility of particularly serum NfL as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in ALS and improves the translation of findings from controlled cohorts to real-world populations. Abstract: Pathogenic variants in the Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) gene can be detected in approximately 2% of sporadic and 11% of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients in Europe. We analyzed the clinical phenotypes of 83 SOD1-ALS patients focusing on patients carrying the most frequent (likely) pathogenic variants (R116G, D91A, L145F) in Germany. Moreover, we describe the effect of tofersen treatment on ten patients carrying these variants. R116G patients showed the most aggressive course of disease with a median survival of 22.0 months compared to 198.0 months in D91A and 87.0 months in L145F patients (HR 7.71, 95% CI 2.89-20.58 vs. D91A; p < 0.001 and HR 4.25, 95% CI 1.55-11.67 vs. L145F; p = 0.02). Moreover, R116G patients had the fastest median ALSFRS-R progression rate with 0.12 (IQR 0.07-0.20) points lost per month. Median diagnostic delay was 10.0 months (IQR 5.5-11.5) and therefore shorter compared to 57.5 months (IQR 14.0-83.0) in D91A (p < 0.001) and 21.5 months (IQR 5.8-38.8) in L145F (p = 0.21) carriers. As opposed to D91A carriers (50.0%), 96.2% of R116G (p < 0.001) and 100.0% of L145F (p = 0.04) patients reported a positive family history. During tofersen treatment, all patients showed a reduction of neurofilament light chain (NfL) serum levels, independent of the SOD1 variant. Patients with SOD1-ALS carrying R116G, D91A, or L145F variants show commonalities, but also differences in their clinical phenotype, including a faster progression rate with shorter survival in R116G, and a comparatively benign disease course in D91A carriers., (© 2024. Abstract: Background: In April 2023, the antisense oligonucleotide tofersen was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of SOD1 -amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), after a decrease of neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels had been demonstrated., Methods: Between 03/2022 and 04/2023, 24 patients with SOD1 -ALS from ten German ALS reference centers were followed-up until the cut-off date for ALS functional rating scale revised (ALSFRS-R), progression rate (loss of ALSFRS-R/month), NfL, phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain (pNfH) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and adverse events., Findings: During the observation period, median ALSFRS-R decreased from 38.0 (IQR 32.0-42.0) to 35.0 (IQR 29.0-42.0), corresponding to a median progression rate of 0.11 (IQR -0.09 to 0.32) points of ALSFRS-R lost per month. Median serum NfL declined from 78.0 pg/ml (IQR 37.0-147.0 pg/ml; n = 23) to 36.0 pg/ml (IQR 22.0-65.0 pg/ml; n = 23; p = 0.02), median pNfH in CSF from 2226 pg/ml (IQR 1061-6138 pg/ml; n = 18) to 1151 pg/ml (IQR 521-2360 pg/ml; n = 18; p = 0.02). In the CSF, we detected a pleocytosis in 73% of patients (11 of 15) and an intrathecal immunoglobulin synthesis (IgG, IgM, or IgA) in 9 out of 10 patients. Two drug-related serious adverse events were reported., Interpretation: Consistent with the VALOR study and its Open Label Extension (OLE), our results confirm a reduction of NfL serum levels, and moreover show a reduction of pNfH in CSF. 48. Clinical and genetic features of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients with C9orf72 mutations.

Abstract: An expansion of the GGGGCC hexanucleotide in the non-coding region of C9orf72 represents the most common cause of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The objective was to describe and analyse the clinical and genetic features of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients with C9orf72 mutations in a large population. Between November 2011 and December 2020, clinical and genetic characteristics of n = 248 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis carrying C9orf72 mutations were collected from the clinical and scientific network of German motoneuron disease centres. Clinical parameters included age of onset, diagnostic delay, family history, neuropsychological examination, progression rate, phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain levels in CSF and survival. The number of repeats was correlated with the clinical phenotype. The clinical phenotype was compared to n = 84 patients with SOD1 mutations and n = 2178 sporadic patients without any known disease-related mutations. Patients with C9orf72 featured an almost balanced sex ratio with 48.4% ( n = 120) women and 51.6% ( n = 128) men. The rate of 33.9% patients ( n = 63) with bulbar onset was significantly higher compared to sporadic (23.4%, P = 0.002) and SOD1 patients (3.1%, P < 0.001). Of note, 56.3% ( n = 138) of C9orf72, but only 16.1% of SOD1 patients reported a negative family history ( P < 0.001). The GGGGCC hexanucleotide repeat length did not influence the clinical phenotypes. Age of onset (58.0, interquartile range 52.0-63.8) was later compared to SOD1 (50.0, interquartile range 41.0-58.0; P < 0.001), but earlier compared to sporadic patients (61.0, interquartile range 52.0-69.0; P = 0.01). Median survival was shorter (38.0 months) compared to SOD1 (198.0 months, hazard ratio 1.97, 95% confidence interval 1.34-2.88; P < 0.001) and sporadic patients (76.0 months, hazard ratio 2.34, 95% confidence interval 1.64-3.34; P < 0.001). Phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain levels in CSF (2880, interquartile range 1632-4638 pg/ml) were higher compared to sporadic patients (1382, interquartile range 458-2839 pg/ml; P < 0.001). In neuropsychological screening, C9orf72 patients displayed abnormal results in memory, verbal fluency and executive functions, showing generally worse performances compared to SOD1 and sporadic patients and a higher share with suspected frontotemporal dementia. In summary, clinical features of patients with C9orf72 mutations differ significantly from SOD1 and sporadic patients. Specifically, they feature a more frequent bulbar onset, a higher share of female patients and shorter survival. 49. A Nation-Wide, Multi-Center Study on the Quality of Life of ALS Patients in Germany.

Abstract: Improving quality of life (QoL) is central to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) treatment. This Germany-wide, multicenter cross-sectional study analyses the impact of different symptom-specific treatments and ALS variants on QoL. Health-related QoL (HRQoL) in 325 ALS patients was assessed using the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Assessment Questionnaire 5 (ALSAQ-5) and EuroQol Five Dimension Five Level Scale (EQ-5D-5L), together with disease severity (captured by the revised ALS Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS-R)) and the current care and therapies used by our cohort. At inclusion, the mean ALSAQ-5 total score was 56.93 (max. 100, best = 0) with a better QoL associated with a less severe disease status (β = -1.96 per increase of one point in the ALSFRS-R score, p < 0.001). "Limb-onset" ALS ( l ALS) was associated with a better QoL than "bulbar-onset" ALS ( b ALS) (mean ALSAQ-5 total score 55.46 versus 60.99, p = 0.040). Moreover, with the ALSFRS-R as a covariate, using a mobility aid (β = -7.60, p = 0.001), being tracheostomized (β = -14.80, p = 0.004) and using non-invasive ventilation (β = -5.71, p = 0.030) were associated with an improved QoL, compared to those at the same disease stage who did not use these aids. In contrast, antidepressant intake (β = 5.95, p = 0.007), and increasing age (β = 0.18, p = 0.023) were predictors of worse QoL. Our results showed that the ALSAQ-5 was better-suited for ALS patients than the EQ-5D-5L. Further, the early and symptom-specific clinical management and supply of assistive devices can significantly improve the individual HRQoL of ALS patients. Appropriate QoL questionnaires are needed to monitor the impact of treatment to provide the best possible and individualized care.

50. Disease progression but not physical state per se determines mental wellbeing in ALS.

Abstract: Background: Studies provide inconclusive results on the question whether loss of mental wellbeing is actually associated with decline in physical function in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The purpose of this study was to determine predictors of mental wellbeing in ALS., Methods: In total, n = 330 ALS patients were interviewed on parameters of mental wellbeing to evaluate the patients' capacity of psychosocial adaptation. These parameters were global and subjective quality of life (QoL), and depressiveness. A subsample of n = 82 ALS patients were interviewed again within approximately a year (mean 14.34 ± 5.53 months)., Results: Both global and subjective QoL were stable, whereas depressiveness increased within the course of 1 year after diagnosis. Physical function decline was associated with mental wellbeing. Progression of physical disabilities and symptom duration were significant predictors of wellbeing in the sense that fast progression and short time since symptom onset (both indicating short time to adapt) were associated with low wellbeing., Conclusions: There is evidence for subsamples in ALS with regard to mental wellbeing, which are mainly determined by clinical parameters. Those subjects being reported in the literature to present with high mental wellbeing are often long survivors. High progression rate and low physical function when attending the clinic for the first time should be red flags and need special attention in clinical counseling.
