Nanoscale phonon transport is a key process that governs thermal conduction in a wide range of materials and devices. Creating controlled phonon populations by resonant excitation at terahertz (THz) frequencies can drastically change the characteristics of nanoscale thermal transport and allow a direct real-space characterization of phonon mean-free paths. Using metamaterial-enhanced terahertz excitation, we tailored a phononic excitation by selectively populating low-frequency phonons within a nanoscale volume in a ferroelectric BaTiO3 thin film. Real-space time-resolved x-ray diffraction microscopy following THz excitation reveals ballistic phonon transport over a distance of hundreds of nm, two orders of magnitude longer than the averaged phonon mean-free path in BaTiO3. On longer length scales, diffusive phonon transport dominates the recovery of the transient strain response, largely due to heat conduction into the substrate. The measured real-space phonon transport can be directly compared with the phonon mean-free path as predicted by molecular dynamics modeling. This time-resolved real-space visualization of THz-matter interactions opens up opportunities to engineer and image nanoscale transient structural states with new functionalities.

The strong electron-lattice interactions in correlated electron systems provide unique opportunities for altering the material properties with relative ease and flexibility. In this Rapid Communication, we use localized strain control via a focused-ion-beam patterning of TiO2 substrates to demonstrate that one can selectively engineer the insulator-to-metal transition temperature, the fractional component of the insulating and metallic phases, and the degree of optical anisotropy down to the length scales of the intrinsic phase separation in VO2 thin films without altering the quality of the films. The effects of localized strain control on the strongly correlated electron system are directly visualized by state-of-the-art IR near-field imaging and spectroscopy techniques and x-ray microdiffraction measurements.

The superconductor-to-insulator transition (SIT) induced by means such as external magnetic fields, disorder or spatial confinement is a vivid illustration of a quantum phase transition dramatically affecting the superconducting order parameter. In pursuit of a new realization of the SIT by interfacial charge transfer, we developed extremely thin superlattices composed of high Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) and colossal magnetoresistance ferromagnet La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO). By using linearly polarized resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism, combined with hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we derived a complete picture of the interfacial carrier doping in cuprate and manganite atomic layers, leading to the transition from superconducting to an unusual Mott insulating state emerging with the increase of LCMO layer thickness. In addition, contrary to the common perception that only transition metal ions may respond to the charge transfer process, we found that charge is also actively compensated by rare-earth and alkaline-earth metal ions of the interface. Such deterministic control of Tc by pure electronic doping without any hindering effects of chemical substitution is another promising route to disentangle the role of disorder on the pseudo-gap and charge density wave phases of underdoped cuprates.

The experimental demonstration of a p-type 2D WSe 2 transistor with a ferroelectric perovskite BaTiO 3 gate oxide is presented. The 30 nm thick BaTiO 3 gate stack shows a robust ferroelectric hysteresis with a remanent polarization of 20 μC/cm 2 and further enables a capacitance equivalent thickness of 0.5 nm in the hybrid WSe 2 /BaTiO 3 stack due to its high dielectric constant of 323. We demonstrate one of the best ON currents for perovskite gate 2D transistors in the literature. This is enabled by high-quality epitaxial growth of BaTiO 3 and a single 2D layer transfer based fabrication method that is shown to be amenable to silicon platforms. This demonstration is an important milestone toward the integration of crystalline complex oxides with 2D channel materials for scaled CMOS and low-voltage ferroelectric logic applications.

Bulk SrTiO 3 is a well-known band insulator and the most common substrate used in the field of complex oxide heterostructures. Its surface and interface with other oxides, however, have demonstrated a variety of remarkable behaviors distinct from those expected. In this work, using a suite of in situ techniques to monitor both the atomic and electronic structures of the SrTiO 3 (001) surface prior to and during growth, the disappearance and re-appearance of a 2D electron gas (2DEG) is observed after the completion of each SrO and TiO 2 monolayer, respectively. The 2DEG is identified with the TiO 2 double layer present at the initial SrTiO 3 surface, which gives rise to a surface potential and mobile electrons due to vacancies within the TiO 2-x adlayer. Much like the electronic reconstruction discovered in other systems, two atomic planes are required, here supplied by the double layer. The combined in situ scattering/spectroscopy findings resolve a number of longstanding issues associated with complex oxide interfaces, facilitating the employment of atomic-scale defect engineering in oxide electronics., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Partially fermented tea such as oolong tea is a popular drink worldwide. Preventing fraud in partially fermented tea has become imperative to protect producers and consumers from possible economic losses. Visible/near-infrared (VIS/NIR) spectroscopy integrated with stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR) and support vector machine (SVM) methods were used for origin discrimination of partially fermented tea from Vietnam, China, and different production areas in Taiwan using the full visible NIR wavelength range (400-2498 nm). The SMLR and SVM models achieved satisfactory results. Models using data from chemical constituents' specific wavelength ranges exhibited a high correlation with the spectra of teas, and the SMLR analyses improved discrimination of the types and origins when performing SVM analyses. The SVM models' identification accuracies regarding different production areas in Taiwan were effectively enhanced using a combination of the data within specific wavelength ranges of several constituents. The accuracy rates were 100% for the discrimination of types, origins, and production areas of tea in the calibration and prediction sets using the optimal SVM models integrated with the specific wavelength ranges of the constituents in tea. NIR could be an effective tool for rapid, nondestructive, and accurate inspection of types, origins, and production areas of teas.

Complex systems, which consist of a large number of interacting constituents, often exhibit universal behavior near a phase transition. A slowdown of certain dynamical observables is one such recurring feature found in a vast array of contexts. This phenomenon, known as critical slowing-down, is well studied mostly in thermodynamic phase transitions. However, it is less understood in highly nonequilibrium settings, where the time it takes to traverse the phase boundary becomes comparable to the timescale of dynamical fluctuations. Using transient optical spectroscopy and femtosecond electron diffraction, we studied a photoinduced transition of a model charge-density-wave (CDW) compound LaTe_{3}. We observed that it takes the longest time to suppress the order parameter at the threshold photoexcitation density, where the CDW transiently vanishes. This finding can be captured by generalizing the time-dependent Landau theory to a system far from equilibrium. The experimental observation and theoretical understanding of dynamical slowing-down may offer insight into other general principles behind nonequilibrium phase transitions in many-body systems.

In traditional models of heteroepitaxy, the substrate serves mainly as a crystalline template for the thin-film lattice, dictating the initial roughness of the film and the degree of coherent strain. Here, performing in situ surface x-ray diffraction during the heteroepitaxial growth of LaTiO 3 on SrTiO 3 (001), we find that a TiO 2 adlayer composed of the ( 13 × 13 ) R 33.7° and ( 2 × 2 ) R 45.0° reconstructions is a highly active participant in the growth process, continually diffusing to the surface throughout deposition. The effects of the TiO 2 adlayer on layer-by-layer growth are investigated using different deposition sequences and anomalous x-ray scattering, both of which permit detailed insight into the dynamic layer rearrangements that take place. Our work challenges commonly held assumptions regarding growth on TiO 2 -terminated SrTiO 3 (001) and demonstrates the critical role of excess TiO 2 surface stoichiometry on the initial stages of heteroepitaxial growth on this important perovskite oxide substrate material.

Due to the strong dependence of electronic properties on the local bonding environment, a full characterization of the structural dynamics in ultrafast experiments is critical. Here, we report the dynamics and structural refinement at nanosecond time scales of a perovskite thin film by combining optical excitation with time-resolved X-ray diffraction. This is achieved by monitoring the temporal response of both integer and half-integer diffraction peaks of LaVO 3 in response to an above-band-gap 800 nm pump pulse. We find that the lattice expands by 0.1% out of plane, and the relaxation is characterized by a biexponential decay with 2 and 12 ns time scales. We analyze the relative intensity change in half-integer peaks and show that the distortions to the substructure are small: the oxygen octahedral rotation angles decrease by ∼0.3° and La displacements decrease by ∼0.2 pm, which directly corresponds to an ∼0.8° increase in the V-O-V bond-angles, an in-plane V-O bond length reduction of ∼0.3 pm, and an unchanged out-of-plane bond length. This demonstration of tracking the atomic positions in a pump-probe experiment provides experimentally accessible values for structural and electronic tunability in this class of materials and will stimulate future experiments.

Modulation of weak interlayer interactions between quasi-two-dimensional atomic planes in the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) provides avenues for tuning their functional properties. Here we show that above-gap optical excitation in the TMDCs leads to an unexpected large-amplitude, ultrafast compressive force between the two-dimensional layers, as probed by in situ measurements of the atomic layer spacing at femtosecond time resolution. We show that this compressive response arises from a dynamic modulation of the interlayer van der Waals interaction and that this represents the dominant light-induced stress at low excitation densities. A simple analytic model predicts the magnitude and carrier density dependence of the measured strains. This work establishes a new method for dynamic, nonequilibrium tuning of correlation-driven dispersive interactions and of the optomechanical functionality of TMDC quasi-two-dimensional materials.

In situ studies of oxide molecular beam epitaxy by synchrotron x-ray scattering has been made possible by upgrading an existing UHV/molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) six-circle diffractometer system. For oxide MBE growth, pure ozone delivery to the chamber has been made available, and several new deposition sources have been made available on a new 12 in. CF (ConFlat, a registered trademark of Varian, Inc.) flange. X-ray diffraction has been used as a major probe for film growth and structures for the system. In the original design, electron diffraction was intended for the secondary diagnostics available without the necessity of the x-ray and located at separate positions. Deposition of films was made possible at the two diagnostic positions. And, the aiming of the evaporation sources is fixed to the point between two locations. Ozone can be supplied through two separate nozzles for each location. Also two separate thickness monitors are installed. Additional features of the equipment are also presented together with the data taken during typical oxide film growth to illustrate the depth of information available via in situ x-ray techniques.

The A(n+1)B(n)O(3n+1) Ruddlesden-Popper homologous series offers a wide variety of functionalities including dielectric, ferroelectric, magnetic and catalytic properties. Unfortunately, the synthesis of such layered oxides has been a major challenge owing to the occurrence of growth defects that result in poor materials behaviour in the higher-order members. To understand the fundamental physics of layered oxide growth, we have developed an oxide molecular beam epitaxy system with in situ synchrotron X-ray scattering capability. We present results demonstrating that layered oxide films can dynamically rearrange during growth, leading to structures that are highly unexpected on the basis of the intended layer sequencing. Theoretical calculations indicate that rearrangement can occur in many layered oxide systems and suggest a general approach that may be essential for the construction of metastable Ruddlesden-Popper phases. We demonstrate the utility of the new-found growth strategy by performing the first atomically controlled synthesis of single-crystalline La3Ni2O7.

Fast, reversible redox reactions in solids at low temperatures without thermomechanical degradation are a promising strategy for enhancing the overall performance and lifetime of many energy materials and devices. However, the robust nature of the cation's oxidation state and the high thermodynamic barrier have hindered the realization of fast catalysis and bulk diffusion at low temperatures. Here, we report a significant lowering of the redox temperature by epitaxial stabilization of strontium cobaltites (SrCoO(x)) grown directly as one of two distinct crystalline phases, either the perovskite SrCoO(3-δ) or the brownmillerite SrCoO(2.5). Importantly, these two phases can be reversibly switched at a remarkably reduced temperature (200-300 °C) in a considerably short time (< 1 min) without destroying the parent framework. The fast, low-temperature redox activity in SrCoO(3-δ) is attributed to a small Gibbs free-energy difference between two topotatic phases. Our findings thus provide useful information for developing highly sensitive electrochemical sensors and low-temperature cathode materials.

Using resonant x-ray spectroscopies combined with density functional calculations, we find an asymmetric biaxial strain-induced d-orbital response in ultrathin films of the correlated metal LaNiO3 which are not accessible in the bulk. The sign of the misfit strain governs the stability of an octahedral "breathing" distortion, which, in turn, produces an emergent charge-ordered ground state with an altered ligand-hole density and bond covalency. Control of this new mechanism opens a pathway to rational orbital engineering, providing a platform for artificially designed Mott materials.

We investigated the interoperator reproducibility of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular retinal thickness measurements using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in healthy Taiwanese eyes. In this study, OCT-3 was used by three trained and experienced operators to measure peripapillary RNFL and macular retinal thickness in a randomly chosen single eye from each normal subject. Mean thickness levels and the differences in thickness measurements among the three operators were calculated and compared. The eyes of 39 subjects (24 females and 15 males) were enrolled. The mean age of the subjects was 30.4 +/- 16.1 years (range, 11-46 years). The mean pupil diameter after pupillary dilation was 7.4 +/- 0.6mm (range, 6-9 mm). Comparing peripapillary RNFL and macular retinal thickness measurements after pupillary dilation, there were no significant differences in: superior, inferior, temporal, and nasal peripapillary areas; 6 mm total macular volume and foveal thickness; and 1, 3 and 6 mm perifoveal areas among the three operators. In this study, OCT thickness measurements showed good interoperator reproducibility among three trained and experienced operators.

This study was designed to investigate the inhibitory effect of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and dexamethasone (DEX) on the proliferation of human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells in vitro. The human RPE cells (R-50 cell line) were cultured and exposed to various concentrations of combined 5-FU (0, 250, 500, 1000, 2000 ng/ml) and DEX (0, 1, 10, 100, 200 micrograms/ml). The cells were incubated for 96 hr and the medium was changed every 48 hr to replenish the drug action. Cell viability was assessed using cell counting and trypan blue exclusion method. Tetrazolium salt, which can be metabolized by mitochondrial dehydrogenase to form a formazan dye, was used to assay cell proliferation. Treatment with 5-FU alone inhibited cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. The concentration of 5-FU that inhibited growth by 50% (IC50) was found to be 704.12 ng/ml. There was a bimodal effect of DEX on RPE cells--stimulation at low concentrations (1, 10 micrograms/ml) and inhibition at high concentrations (100, 200 micrograms/ml). When the two drugs were combined, there was additive inhibition in the concentration of 200 micrograms/ml of DEX. These results indicate that a combination of 5-FU and DEX is no more effective in the inhibition of human RPE cells, except in combination with high concentrations of DEX (> or = 200 micrograms/ml).

A model was proposed for describing the observed in vitro release behavior of drugs from porous HAPs. The model consists of three successive stages; during the first stage, the dissolution medium penetrating into the porous HAP, the amount of the drug released is proportional to the square root of release time. During the second stage, after the pores in the HAP are filled out by the dissolution medium, the drug release being proceeded by dissolution into the dissolution medium outside of the HAP, the amount of the drug released is proportional to release time. During the third stage, after the drug concentration is decreased and below the solubility limit of the drug in the dissolution medium, the drug diffusing to the stirred dissolution medium outside of the HAP, the release rate is markedly slowed and the release amount approaches a plateau value.
