Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) transplantation has been proposed as a promising treatment modality for myocardial infarction (MI), but the low retention rate remains a considerable challenge. Injectable natural polymer hydrogels with conductivity ability are highly desirable as cell delivery vehicles to repair infarct myocardium and restore the cardiac function. In this work, we developed a hydrogel system based on gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and oxidized dextran (ODEX) as cell delivery vehicles for MI. And dopamine could be used as a reductant of graphene oxide (GO) to form reductive GO (rGO). By adjusting the amount of rGO, the conductivity of hydrogels with 0.5 mg/mL rGO concentration (≈10−4 S/cm) was similar to that of natural heart tissue. In vitro cell experiments showed that the prepared hydrogels had excellent biocompatibility and cell delivery ability of UCMSCs. More importantly, GelMA-O5/rGO hydrogel could promote UCMSCs growth and proliferation, improve the myocardial differentiation ability of UCMSCs, and up-regulate the expression of cTnI and Cx43. Further in vivo experiments demonstrated that GelMA-O5/rGO/UCMSCs Hydrogel could significantly improve the ejection fraction (EF) of rats and significantly reduce myocardial infarct area compared to PBS group, promote the survival of UCMSCs, enhance the expression level of cTnI and Cx43, and decrease the expression level of caspase-3. The findings of this study suggested that the injectable conductive GelMA-O5/rGO hydrogel encapsulating UCMSCs could improve damaged myocardial tissue and reconstruct myocardial function, which will be a promising therapeutic strategy for cardiac repair.

Micro-/macroangiopathy, neuropathy and prolonged inflammation are common in diabetic wound, however, traditional wound dressing cannot treat these problems in the same time. Herein, we developed a multifunctional hydrogel with promoted angiogenesis, cell proliferation and anti-inflammation ability to treat diabetic wound. The hydrogel was composed of natural polymers, including gelatin and chitosan, which have excellent biocompatibility. Histatin-1 (His-1) was added into the hydrogel to improve the cell adhesion, proliferation and angiogenesis. Besides, polypyrrole based conductive nanoparticles (G-Ppy) were introduced in the hydrogel to enhance the electrical signal conduction between skin and promote the mechanical strength of the hydrogel. The polypyrrole nanoparticles were growth in the chain of methacryloyl grafted gelatin (Gel-MA), leading to a better biocompatibility and water dispersibility. In vivo wound healing experiment proved that the hydrogel accelerated the wound healing rate, down regulation the expression of pro-inflammation factor TNF-α and upregulation the expression of CD31 and α-SMA, indicating the prospects in the application of diabetic wound healing.

Here, we report a case of a dissected thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair after frozen elephant trunk implantation, using aortic balloon occlusion technique to simplify the proximal anastomosis and avoid deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. In addition, detailed CT follow-up pictures showed that false lumen thrombosis is a time-dependent and reversible variable. Repeated measurements with time series analysis should be performed to explore false lumen remodeling.

Background: The aortic graft infection (AGI) is fatal and has rare evidences of treatment. Here, we report a complicated AGI case after Bentall’s procedure. Case presentation: A 54-year-old male with a history of Bentall’s procedure, ruptured right sinus aneurysm, ventricular septal defect(VSD) repair and right ventricular outflow tract stenosis(RVOTS) repair was admitted in our hospital with the chief complaint of poor heeling of incision, chilling and fever. Transthoracic echocardiography(TTE), contrast enhanced computed tomography(CECT) found a perigraft leakage pseudoaneurysm. After conservative treatment, the patient was underwent re-operation due to the growing giant pseudoaneurysm. After 8 weeks antibiotic therapy, the patient discharged with no complications. Conclusions: The treatment of AGI is comprehensive. Successful management requires a prompt diagnosis,sensitive and long-term postoperative antimicrobial therapy, and early surgery depending on the patients’ status and clinician’s experience.

The right axillary artery is currently recommended for arterial cannulation in surgery for acute type A aortic dissection. However, the feasibility of cannulation on a dissected right axillary artery remains undetermined. The objective was to examine the feasibility of cannulation on a dissected right axillary artery.From 2016 to 2020, 835 patients who underwent acute type A aortic dissection repair were included in this study. Cannulation strategy and perioperative outcomes of patients who did and did not have right axillary artery dissection were compared. Propensity score matching and logistic regression were applied.A total of 124 patients had right axillary artery dissection, and 711 patients did not. Direct right axillary artery cannulation was used for cardiopulmonary bypass in the majority of patients, but with a lower rate in patients with right axillary artery dissection (n = 88 [71.0%] vs n = 579 [81.4%], P = .007). Right axillary artery cannulation failure (n = 3 [2.4%] vs n = 5 [0.7%], P = .102) and related complications (n = 1 [0.8%] vs n = 6 [0.8%], P = 1.000) were rare in both groups. In-hospital mortality (n = 18 [14.5%] vs n = 59 [8.3%], P = .027) and stroke (n = 14 [11.3%] vs n = 42 [5.9%], P = .027) were significantly higher in the right axillary artery dissection group, but after propensity score matching, in-hospital outcomes were comparable. Right axillary artery dissection was not a risk factor for mortality, stroke, right axillary artery cannulation not performed, or right axillary artery cannulation failure.Direct right axillary artery cannulation is feasible for most patients with acute type A aortic dissection with right axillary artery dissection.

Background To evaluate the safety and efficacy of femoral artery cannulation as an alternative to axillary artery cannulation, we retrospectively compared outcomes between patients with axillary or femoral artery cannulation during open aortic arch repair for type A aortic dissection (TAAD). Methods Between January 2014 and January 2019, 646 patients underwent open aortic arch repair with circulatory arrest for TAAD using antegrade selective cerebral perfusion (SACP) and were divided into two groups according to the site of arterial cannulation: an axillary artery group (axillary group, n=558) or a femoral artery group (femoral group, n=88). The axillary artery was considered as the primary cannulation site, and the femoral artery was used as an alternative when axillary artery cannulation was deemed unsuitable or had failed. Propensity score matching was performed to correct baseline differences. Results After propensity score matching, the patients' characteristics were comparable between groups (n=85 in each). The incidence of in-hospital mortality (10.6% vs. 14.1%; P=0.642) and stroke (3.5% vs. 5.9%; P=0.720) were comparable between the axillary and femoral groups. The incidence of newly required dialysis was lower in the femoral group, but the difference was not statistically significant (34.1% vs. 20.0%; P=0.050). Other outcomes and major adverse events were comparable. Conclusions Femoral artery cannulation produced similar perioperative outcomes to axillary cannulation after open arch repair for TAAD. The femoral artery can be used as a safe and effective alternative to the axillary artery for arterial cannulation in TAAD patients undergoing open arch repair.

Background: Acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) is a cardiovascular emergency and has high mortality and morbidity. We retrospectively compared the effects on outcomes of single arterial cannulation via axillary artery (AAC) with double arterial cannulation via axillary and femoral artery (DAC) in patients who underwent cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) for ATAAD. Methods: Between January 2017 and May 2021, four hundred 29 patients who underwent aortic arch repair with circulatory arrest for ATAAD were divided into AAC group ( n = 283) and DAC group ( n = 146). The propensity score-matched (PSM) analysis were performed to compare the characteristics and outcomes of the groups. Results: After PSM ( n = 137 in each), the DAC group had a longer duration of CPB (229 vs 244, p = 0.011), aortic cross-clamp time (121 vs 149, p < 0.001), durations of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stay (7 vs 8, p = 0.014) and hospital stay (19 vs 25, p < 0.001) compared with AAC group. The incidences of dialysis (21% vs. 31%, p = 0.073), postoperative stroke (9% vs 15%, p = 0.143), ECMO support (2% vs 7%, p = 0.077), in-hospital mortality (7% vs 14%, p = 0.071) and follow-up mortality (10% vs 19%, p = 0.059) showed no significant difference between two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed postoperative ECMO (OR: 16.69, 95% CI: 1.78–156.29; p = 0.014) or stroke (OR: 11.34, 95% CI: 2.64–48.72; p < 0.001) were associated with in-hospital mortality. Univariate Cox regression results showed stroke history (OR: 4.61, 95% CI: 1.90–11.16; p = 0.001), aortic valvuloplasty (OR: 0.21, 95% CI: 0.07–0.59; p = 0.003), postoperative ALT day1 (OR: 1.00, 95% CI: 1.00–1.00; p = 0.008), ECMO (OR: 16.30, 95% CI: 4.78–55.61; p < 0.001), tracheotomy (OR: 3.78, 95% CI: 1.08–13.20; p = 0.037), postoperative stroke (OR: 4.61, 95% CI: 1.90–11.16; p < 0.001) and re-exploration for bleeding (OR: 3.52, 95% CI: 1.01–12.27; p = 0.048) were associated to follow-up mortality. Conclusions: For surgical treatment of ATAAD with CPB when compared to double axillary and femoral artery, single axillary cannulation was associated with shorter durations of CPB and ACC as well as ICU and hospital stays but no with significant difference in mortality.

For patients with acute type A aortic dissection, strongly suspected of having concomitant severe coronary artery disease (CAD), preoperative or intraoperative coronary angiography has been recommended. However, conventional selective coronary angiography in this setting may extend the dissection or aortic rupture. We present the use of intraoperative open-heart coronary angiography in a patient with acute type A aortic dissection. A 50-year-old man presented with chest pain and dyspnea and was admitted to our department with acute type A aortic dissection. The patient underwent coronary artery stent implantation in the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) 3 years previously due to an acute myocardial infarction. This time we failed to evaluate the patency of the LAD using multidetector computed tomography. An aortic rupture occurred due to conventional coronary angiography, and open-heart coronary angiography was performed. The examination revealed no significant stenosis. A Bentall procedure and total aortic arch replacement were performed, with an intraoperative stent inserted into the descending aorta, and the patient had an uneventful postoperative course. From this case, we learn that intraoperative open-heart coronary angiography is safe and effective in patients with acute type A aortic dissection.

In this letter, we commented on several issues of the recent study entitled “Hypothermic circulatory arrest time affects neurological outcomes of frozen elephant trunk for acute type A aortic dissection: A systematic review and meta‐analysis” by Dr. Mousavizadeh et al. We hope to improve the clarity of this research and call attention to the methodological quality of performing a meta-analysis.

Objectives The proper therapeutic management for acute type A aortic intramural hematoma (IMH) is still controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes following emergency surgery or conservative treatment for patients with this disease. Methods From January 2015 to December 2018, 124 consecutive patients were diagnosed with an acute type A aortic IMH and were included in this study. According to our surgical indications, they were divided into two groups: an operation group (OG) and a conservative treatment group (CG). Results Of 124 patients, 83 (66.9%) patients accepted emergency surgery and 41 (33.1%) patients accepted strict conservative treatment. There were no differences between these two groups in early mortality and complications. However, the late mortality of patients in the CG was significantly higher than for patients in the OG. A maximum aortic diameter in the ascending aorta and aortic arch ≥ 45 mm and maximum thickness of IMH in the same section ≥ 8 mm were risk factors for IMH related death in patients undergoing conservative treatment. Conclusions The mortality associated with emergency surgery for patients with acute type A aortic IMH was satisfactory. In clinical centers with well-established surgical techniques and postoperative management, emergency surgical treatment may provide a better outcome than medical treatment for patients with acute type A aortic IMH.

Retention of guidewire during a neurointervention procedure is extremely rare and potentially lethal. We report a successful operation on an aortic rupture caused by a retained guidewire from a neurointervention procedure 2 years ago. During the operation, we took out the guidewire from both the aortic arch and femoral artery. Postoperative treatment was uneventful. At the 10-month follow-up, the patient remained asymptomatic and computed tomography showed no abnormality.

Aims Angiotensin II (Ang II) induces aortic dissection (AD) via regulation of pathological changes in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). However, the molecular mechanisms involved are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential role of the proto-oncogene non-receptor cellular Abelson tyrosine kinase (c-Abl) in Ang II-induced VSMC phenotypic transformation and apoptosis. Main methods Lentiviral transfection and short hairpin RNA (shRNA) were used to enhance or inhibit c-Abl in cultured VSMCs. In addition, C57BL/6 and Abl1 gene knockout heterozygous (c-Abl−/+) mice were infused with Ang II, with or without c-Abl inhibitor (STI571) treatment. The incidence of AD was evaluated in vivo, while the molecular and pathological features of VSMC phenotypic transformation and apoptosis were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Key findings Ang II infusion induced a substantial incidence of AD in vivo (27%; 8/30), while STI571 intragastric gavage or Abl1 knockout reduced the incidence of AD to 13% (4/30) and 7% (2/30), respectively. The results of subsequent studies showed that c-Abl overexpression enhanced the Ang II-induced apoptosis and synthetic phenotypic transformation of VSMCs in vitro, while inhibition of c-Abl activity with STI571 or Abl1 gene knockout significantly attenuated the Ang II-induced apoptosis and synthetic phenotypic transformation of VSMCs both in vivo and in vitro. Significance Activation of c-Abl may be important for the phenotypic transformation and apoptosis of VSMCs underlying the Ang II-induced AD. Targeted inhibition of c-Abl may prevent Ang II-induced AD via attenuation of the pathological changes of VSMCs.

Acute Type A Aortic Dissection (ATAAD) is a kind of cardiovascular disease which seriously threatens human life and health. Surgical treatment is currently recognized as the standard treatment for ATAAD. It has the characteristics of rapid onset, long operation time, and worse post-operative prognosis than other routine cardiac surgeries. Preoperative biomarkers correlated with the outcome of ATAAD was rarely reported. Future research should be directed toward finding out some useful predictive biomarkers and assessing their potential treatment value, in the hope of improving the postoperative prognosis of ATAAD. Von Willebrand factor (vWF) is considered to be closely related to pathophysiological processes such as blood coagulation and vascular inflammation. Its deficiency or elevation may affect patients' blood coagulation condition and postoperative intravascular inflammation, thus affecting the occurrence of postoperative hemorrhagic complications. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of vWF on the early postoperative outcome of patients with ATAAD. Method and analysis Patients with ATAAD who receive surgical treatment in our center from April 1, 2021 to April 1, 2022 will be prospectively included. According to the preoperative vWF measurement, enrolled patients will be divided into two groups: normal vWF (normal level of vWF: NL-vWF, reference value of 50–160%) group and abnormal vWF (Disrupted level of vWF: DL-vWF) group. The preoperative baseline data (including demographic characteristics, comobidities and malperfusion syndrome state, imaging examination, and laboratory examination), and surgical data will be documented. Primary and secondary endpoints events (described in part 2.4) will be assessed and recorded. We will use propensity score approach to account for baseline differences between DL-vWF group and NL-vWF group, and compare the early postoperative outcomes for a purpose of assessing the effect of vWF on the early postoperative outcomes of patients with ATAAD.

Background: Mutation of the ACTA2 (α-2 smooth muscle actin) gene accounts for ~15% of all cases of familial thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections. Surprisingly, no severe vascular phenotypes were observed at baseline in mice carrying this gene mutation. Our aim was to explore whether mutation of ACTA2 promotes the development of aneurysms or dissections in the presence of angiotensin II (AngII) and to determine whether this mutation has an impact on the phenotypic modulation and apoptosis mediated by AngII in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Methods: Mice were divided into three groups: AngII stimulated-wild-type (WT) (AngII) and ACTA2 −/− mice (ACTA2) group, in which AngII were administered subcutaneously into 8-week-old C57 mice and ACTA2 −/− mice, respectively, for 4 weeks using osmotic minipumps, and the control group (WT), in which the WT mice were infused with normal saline (NS). Ultrasound was performed to quantify lumen diameters. RT-qPCR and Western blot were used to assess gene expression, and histobiochemistry was used to evaluate the pathological changes in the thoracoabdominal aortas. TUNEL was used to assess apoptosis in VSMCs. Results: Compared with the AngII- group, the ACTA2 mice exhibited more severity of dilated lumena of the aortas, a significantly increased expression of osteopontin (OPN), an elevated ratio of Bax/Bcl-2, increased apoptosis, and a decreased expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). Conclusions: Knockout of ACTA2 promoted AngII induced progressive lumen dilation of the aortas, apoptosis, and the phenotypic modulation in VSMCs in mice.

Background Aortic aneurysms and/or dissection (AADs) in the aorta are a leading cause of human morbidity and mortality. To date, data on non-syndromic thoracic AADs (TAADs) have been mainly derived from Caucasians, and the genetic basis of TAADs remains to be elucidated. In this study, we assessed gene mutations in a Chinese population with TAADs. Methods A cohort of 68 non-syndromic familial TAAD Chinese patients was screened for the most common TAAD-causing genes (ACTA2, MYH11, TGFBR1, TGFBR2, and SMAD3) using high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis. Thereafter, 142 unrelated non-syndromic sporadic cases were recruited and further analyzed using HRM analysis to estimate the prevalence of disease-causing mutations in these candidate genes. Results Two novel ACTA2 mutations (N117I and L348R) were identified in each familial TAAD proband separately, and an additional novel ACTA2 mutation (Y168N) was identified in one patient with sporadic TAADs. In contrast, none of the three mutations occurred in 480 control subjects. Also, no other gene mutations were identified in this cohort of Chinese TAAD patients. Conclusions The current study identified three novel ACTA2 mutations in Chinese TAAD patients, and these mutations represented the most predominant genes responsible for non-syndromic TAADs. In addition, HRM analysis was shown to be a sensitive and high-throughput method for screening gene mutations.

We sought to determine the prevalence and correlates of valvular heart diseases (VHD) in the elderly population. The participants’ personal information, medical history, behavioral habits and clinical status were assessed by questionnaire, while the left ventricular dimensions, function and the presence and severity of VHD were evaluated by transthoracic echocardiography. This study analyzed the data of 3948 participants who were older than 60 years. Significant VHD was present in 1.93% of participants; the standardized prevalence of VHD among the elderly population in Hubei was 2.05% (95% CI: 1.61–2.49). The most frequent VHD was aortic regurgitation, followed by tricuspid regurgitation, mitral regurgitation and multiple valve diseases. Thrombosis is a rare cause of superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome. We report a 37-year-old man hospitalized because of swelling of the face and neck. A computed tomography angiography showed a thrombotic obstruction of SVC. The patient was treated by percutaneous transluminal balloon angioplasty of the SVC and placement of a stent. The symptoms disappeared, but the patient was hospitalized again after 3 months for the same complaints. Computed tomography angiography showed thrombosis in the stent in the SVC. The SVC was replaced with a prosthetic blood vessel. The patient's postoperative recovery was uneventful, and SVC syndrome did not occur during 2 years of postoperative follow-up.

Objective Retrospective assessment of short and long-term outcome in elderly undergoing primary isolated Valvular Heart Surgery (VR).

The study summarizes the clinical experience of surgical treatments of various types of thoracic aneurysm and aortic dissection. Clinical data of 122 patients with thoracic aneurysm and aortic dissection during July 2005 to July 2008 were retrospectively analyzed. The elective operations were performed in 107 patients while emergency surgery was done in 15 cases. Different surgical strategies were employed on the basis of diseased region, including simple ascending aortic replacement (n=3), aortic root replacement (n=43), hemi-arch replacement /total arch replacement + elephant trunk technique (n=32), thoracic/thoracoabdominal aortic replacement (n=8) and endovascular repair (n=36). In this series, there is 4 cases of perioperative death due to massive cerebral hemorrhage (n=1), respiratory failure (n=1) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) (n=2). Three cases developed post-operative massive cerebral infarction and the relatives of the patients abandoned treatment. Instant success rate of endovascular repair was 100%. The intimal rupture was sealed. Blood flow was unobstructed in true lumen and no false lumen was visualized. It was concluded that aggressive surgery should be considered in the patients with thoracic aneurysm and aortic dissection. Surgical procedures should vary with the location and the nature of the lesions.

To develop a more efficient antithrombotic way after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), the anticoagulant effects were compared of human tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) gene transfection and aspirin oral administration (traditional method) on vein grafts. An eukaryotic expression plasmid pCMV-(Kozak) TFPI was prepared. Animal model of carotid artery bypass grafting was constructed. In operation, endothelial cells of vein grafts in TFPI group and empty plasmid control group were transfected with pCMV-(Kozak) TFPI and empty plasmid pCMV respectively, while no transfection was conducted in aspirin control group. After operation, aspirin (2 mg.kg(-1).(-1)) was administered (i.g.) in aspirin control group. Three days later, grafts (n=10) were harvested for RT-PCR, Western blotting and immunohistochemical analyses of exogenous gene expression and for pathological, scanning electron microscopic observation of thrombus. Thirty days later, the patency rates of remnant grafts (n=10) were recorded by vessel Doppler ultrasonography. Human TFPI gene products were detected in gene transferred vein grafts. Three days later, thrombi were found in 7 animals of aspirin control group and in 8 animals of empty plasmid control group, but in only 1 of TFPI group (P0.01). Thirty days later, 5 grafts were occluded in empty plasmid control group, but none of grafts was occluded in the other groups (P0.05). The endothelial surfaces of grafts in both of the control groups were covered with aggregated erythrocytes and platelets, and it were not seen in TFPI group. It was suggested that the anticoagulant effects on vein grafts of human TFPI gene transfection are better than those of aspirin.

An 18-year-old female with transposition of great arteries and severe pulmonary hypertension was successfully treated with Damus-Kaye-Stansel biventricular repair. Results of the 12-year follow-up showed satisfactory hemodynamics with the aortic valve staying closed throughout the cardiac cycle and without the pulmonary valve regurgitation. Form 2008 to 2009, four patients with complex thoracic aortic disease, including aortic aneurysms and dissections, were successfully treated in our department with a new treatment approach: hybrid procedure. Combined open surgery and endovascular repair were performed in these patients without deep hypothermia or circulatory arrest. Compared to those who underwent traditional open surgery in the same period, time of mechanical ventilation and ICU stay was decreased in these four patients. All of them were discharged soon after operation without postoperative complications or death. The result suggests that this new approach could be an option for thoracic aortic disease, but long-term and large-population studies are still required to demonstrate the safety and validity.

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been strongly associated with hepatocellular carcinoma . HBV encodes an oncogenic hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx), which is a multifunctional regulator that modulates signal transduction, transcription, cell cycle progress, protein degradation, apoptosis, and genetic stability through direct and indirect interaction with host factors. The subcellular localization of HBx is primarily cytoplasmic, with a small fraction in the nucleus. In addition, high levels of HBx expression lead to an abnormal mitochondrial distribution. The dynamic distribution of HBx could be important to the multiple functions of HBx at different stages of the HBV life cycle. This short review presents an overview of the differential roles of HBx as a function of its intracellular localization.

To reduce restenosis in vein grafts after coronary artery bypass grafting, to investigate the effect of human tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) gene delivery on neointima formation.The eukaryotic expressed plasmid vector pCMV-(Kozak) TFPI was constructed. Forty-eight Japanese white rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups with 16 rabbits in each group: TFPI group, empty plasmid control group and empty control group. Animal model of common carotid artery bypass grafting was constructed. Before anastomosis, vein endotheliocytes were transfected with cationic liposome containing the plasmid pCMV-(Kozak) TFPI (400 microg) by pressurizing infusion (30 min) in TFPI group. In empty plasmid control group, vector pCMV-(Kozak) TFPI was replaced by empty plasmid pCMV (400 microg). In empty control group, those endotheliocytes were not interfered. After operation, vein grafts were harvested at 3 days for immunohistochemical, RT-PCR and Western-blot analyses of exogenous gene expression and at 30 days for histopathology measurement of intimal areas, media areas and calculation of intimal/media areas ratio. Luminal diameter and vessel wall thickness were also measured by vessel Doppler ultrasonography and cellular category of neointima was analyzed by transmission electron microscope at 30 days after operation.Human TFPI mRNA and protein were detected in TFPI group. The mean luminal diameter of the TFPI group, empty plasmid control group and empty control group was (2.68 +/- 0.32) mm, (2.41 +/- 0.23) mm and (2.38 +/- 0.21) mm respectively. There were statistically significant differences between TFPI group and control groups (P0.05). The vessel wall thickness of the TFPI group, empty plasmid control group and empty control group was (1.09 +/- 0.11) mm, (1.28 +/- 0.16) mm and (1.34 +/- 0.14) mm respectively. There were statistically significant differences between TFPI group and other control groups (P0.01). The mean intimal areas, the ratio of the intimal/media areas of the TFPI group were (0.62 +/- 0.05) mm2 and 0.51 +/- 0.08 respectively,whichwere reduced compared withthose of the two control groups (P0.05). The mean media areas had no significant differences among three groups (P0.05). Through transmission electron microscope analyses,no smooth muscle cells were seen in neointima of TFPI group in many visual fields,but smooth muscle cells were found in neointima of two control groups.Human TFPI gene transfection reduced intimal thickness in vein grafts.
