2. Reflection on Teaching Linear Algebra: Examining One Instructor's Movements between the Three Worlds of Mathematical Thinking

- Abstract
Reflection is an important part of teaching and needs to be considered carefully. In this study, we examined a mathematics instructor's reflections on teaching linear algebra. The research team employed Tall's (How humans learn to think mathematically: exploring the three worlds of mathematics. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2013) framework to track the instructor's movements between the three worlds of mathematical thinking. The instructor emphasized the importance of symbolic and embodied thinking and made sure the students were ready before entering the formal world. It became evident that moving the class between the worlds appropriately at certain moments was critical to students' understanding of the concept, however at times required much anticipation and careful preparation in advance as well as creating appropriate teaching resources. The instructor's dual role as a researcher and participant resulted a model of instructional decision making which was used to give further insights during his movements between Tall's worlds and afforded him unique opportunities for reflection and subsequent carefully calculated class interventions.

3. Developing Reasoning about the Derivative of a Complex-Valued Function with the Aid of 'Geometer's Sketchpad'

- Abstract
In this study, a description is provided for the development of two undergraduate students' geometric reasoning about the derivative of a complex-valued function with the aid of "Geometer's Sketchpad" ("GSP") during an interview sequence designed to help them characterize the derivative geometrically. Specifically, a particular "GSP" task at the end of this interview sequence aided the participants in viewing the derivative as a local property. This advancement is notable as previous participants had been largely unable to make this characterization precisely, and the participants of this study only did so while working on the final task of the interview sequence. This task required students to determine an algebraic formula given only geometric data through "GSP." Particularly, they recognized that their disks constructed in "GSP" needed to be small to accurately identify points where the function is non-differentiable, and to stay away from the "bad points" when determining differentiability.

4. Leading Students towards the Formal World of Mathematical Thinking: A Mathematician's Reflections on Teaching Eigentheory

- Abstract
In this study, we analysed a mathematician's teaching journals on eigenvalues and eigenvectors in a first-year linear algebra course. The research team employed Tall's ["How humans learn to think mathematically: Exploring the three worlds of mathematics." Cambridge University Press] three-world model of embodied, symbolic and formal as a framework for understanding the mathematician and teacher's pedagogical reflections as he led the class to the formal world. In order to reach the formal world, he used a sequence of tasks that emphasized embodied and symbolic, as well as formal thinking. The analysis of the journals showed that the mathematician faced challenges in leading the class towards the formal world. The study also revealed that the mathematician strived to build a concept image, that, while perhaps mirroring his own, did not resonate with the students.

We, five math teacher educators (MTEs), share how multimodal microanalysis has the potential to contribute to rehumanizing mathematics education by expanding what counts as evidence of students’ knowings. We define multimodal microanalysis as the detailed examination and interpretation of minute interactions between various sensory modalities and mathematical representations at a granular level. Using mathematics cognitive interview videos, we share our research design and analysis processes and discuss how multimodal microanalysis can contribute to rehumanizing mathematics teaching and learning. In this manuscript we, six math teacher educators (MTEs), share a collaborative self-study investigation into increasing our embodiment-focused noticing. Initially, we individually viewed cognitive interview videos and recorded our embodiment-focused noticings. Next, we met as a group to share, compare, and merge our noticings. We used the merged noticings to develop an exemplar and a rubric. We will discuss how layering an embodiment lens over our noticings can contribute to rehumanizing mathematics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

8. Developing Geometric Reasoning of the Relationship of the Cauchy Riemann Equations and Differentiation

- Abstract
This study investigates the embodied, symbolic, and formal reasoning of two fourth-year university students while exploring geometric reasoning about the Cauchy-Riemann equations with the aid of Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP). These students participated in a teaching activity designed to encourage shifts between embodied, symbolic, and formal reasoning of the Cauchy-Riemann equations as they relate to the amplitwist concept. This research extends previous work related to the complex derivative which only makes use of the limit definition. The Cauchy-Riemann equations naturally integrate notions from linear algebra and multi-variable calculus, which have their own embodied and symbolic interpretations and introduce different challenges in developing a geometric/embodied understanding of the C-R equations. Our work also illustrates how conversations expressed through utterances served as a catalyst for teasing out and connecting the symbolic representations such as the Jacobian and partial derivatives inherent in the Cauchy-Riemann equations. As such, taking part in conversations via utterances with GSP, inscriptions, and other students can create opportunities for students to connect concepts and recognize contradictions across multiple forms of reasoning. We offer potential anticipatory knowledge for complex analysis instructors to facilitate similarly rich conversations within the classroom.

International audience; In this paper we analyzed a mathematician’s journals of 5-day teaching episodes on eigenvalues and eigenvectors in a first-year linear algebra course, as well as his students’ responses to a survey. We employed Tall’s (2013) three world model, to follow the mathematician’s and his students’ movements between the three worlds. The study revealed that despite the mathematician’s efforts in demonstrating a more holistic view of the concepts, many students found linear algebra very abstract and gravitated more toward symbolic thinking.

Abdurro’uf et al., This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys., This publication uses data generated via the Zooniverse.org platform, development of which is funded by generous support, including a Global Impact Award from Google, and by a grant from the Alfred P.
