Abstract

The cashew nut wastes (CNW), more released in the environment by cashew nut transforming units, are underused based on bioenergy. This study aimed at evaluating the biogas production by the anaerobic codigestion of CNW with various organic feedstocks. Physicochemical parameters and lower heating value (LHV) of cashew nut hull (CH) and cashew almond skin (CS) were determined. Batch cultures of each waste, supplemented to pig manure (PM), cow dung (CD), fermentation sludge (FS), activated sludge (AS) and Macrotermes bellicosus termite gut homogenate (TGH), were performed in anaerobic and mesophilic conditions. The biogas and methane (CH4) were measured. CNW were acid (pH 5.86-6.44), with 86.80-92.38% volatile solids (VS) and slightly high carbon/nitrogen ratio (31.94-37.79). The LHV was 23.094 MJ/Kg and 18.113 MJ/Kg for CH and CS, respectively. The highest yields were retrieved with the co-digestion PM-CH (189.16 L biogas.kg-1 VS, 130.89 L CH4.kg-1 VS, and 69.2% CH4) and CD-CS (159.85 L biogas.kg-1 VS, 99.58 L CH4.kg1 VS, and 62.3% CH4). Therefore, to boost biogas and biomethane yield, it is necessary to adjust the C/N ratios to the optimal values, and maintain the pH to the neutral, and combine PM and CD as inoculum during the digestion process of CNW.&nbsp

Abstract

The measurement of child feeding practices is complex and the relation between the quality of feeding and children's nutritional status is difficult to establish. We examined this relation in rural Burkina Faso, West Africa, using an adapted version of the Infant and Child Feeding Index (ICFI). A cross-sectional study was conducted on a random sample of children (n = 2466) aged 6-35 mo in 2002. Feeding practices were assessed through a qualitative 24-h recall. ICFIs were made age specific for children aged 6-11 mo (n = 614), 12-23 mo (n = 987), 24-35 mo (n = 865), and were divided into terciles. The association between height-for-age Z-scores (HAZ), weight-for-height Z-scores (WHZ), and ICFIs were examined separately in each age group. Multivariate analyses were performed to control for sociodemographic and economic factors. Adjusted mean HAZ in low, medium, and high categories of ICFI were, respectively, -1.67, -1.53, and -1.21 (P = 0.003) among children aged 6-11 mo; -2.54, 2.24, and -2.11 (P = 0.0002) among children aged 12-23 mo; and -2.18, -2.20, and -2.45 (P = 0.05) among children aged 24-35 mo. There was also a positive association between ICFI and WHZ in children aged 12-23 mo (P = 0.05) but a negative association in children aged 6-11 mo (P = 0.02). Among the components of ICFI, dietary diversity or variety scores and frequency of meals or snacks supported the positive associations with anthropometric indices, except for WHZ in children aged 6-11 mo, whereas breast-feeding exhibited a reverse association among older children. A suitable ICFI and/or some of its components could be used to identify vulnerable age groups and to monitor interventions in similar rural areas of Africa. Abstract

L’utilisation non contrôlée d’antibiotiques en élevage conduit à la sélection des germes résistants, à la recrudescence des infections, l’augmentation de la mortalité et la baisse de la productivité en viande de poulet au Tchad. Cette étude a pour but de déterminer la prévalence et la susceptibilité des souches de Salmonella spp. Isolées dans les carcasses de poulets au Tchad aux antibiotiques. Au total 60 échantillons de carcasses de poulets ont été prélevés dans les sites d’élevage et point de vente. Les souches de Salmonella spp. ont été isolées suivant les méthodes standard de microbiologiques et confirmées par la galérie Api 20 E. La sensibilité aux antibiotiques a été déterminée par la méthode de diffusion sur milieu solide. La contamination à Salmonella spp. a été détectée dans 68,33% des échantillons provenant des sites d’élevages et 34,15% des points de vente. Les résultats des tests de sensibilité aux antibiotiques ont montré que : 92,68% des Salmonella isolées étaient résistantes à au moins un antibiotique, 100% des souches présentaient une résistance à l’ampicilline, érythromycine et à l’imipenème ; 87,80% à l’acide fusidique et 51,22% à la tétracycline. Un pourcentage de 34,15% de multi-résistance des souches a été observé. Cette étude a permis d’évaluer la prévalence et d’apprécier le profil d’antibiorésistance des souches de Salmonella spp. isolées.Mots clés : Poulet de chair, Salmonella spp, prévalence, antibiotique, résistance, Tchad.

37. Antioxidant and antibacterial activities of polyphenols from ethnomedicinal plants of Burkina Faso

Abstract

Polyphenols from four medicinal plants of Burkina Faso, Combretum micranthum, Khaya senegalensis, Pterocarpus erinaceus and Sida acuta, were screened for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities against pathogenic bacteria. The medicinal plants displayed different polyphenols contents and antioxidant activities. The bark of P. erinaceus had the highest antioxidant activity. Some microorganisms were susceptible to polyphenol extracts with minimal bactericidal concentration values between 20 and 2000 mg/ml while other microorganisms appeared to be resistant to the extracts. Microbicide and microbiostatic activities of the extracts were dependent on the type of strains. Results suggest that these plants are not only interesting sources for antimicrobial activities but also potential sources of phenolic antioxidants.Key words: Antioxidants, polyphenols, antimicrobials, medicinal plants.African Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 4 (8), pp. 823-828

38. Burden of rotavirus and other enteropathogens among children with diarrhea in Burkina Faso

Objective: There is limited information available regarding the etiology of gastrointestinal infections in Burkina Faso. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and epidemiology of enteric pathogens causing gastroenteritis in young children, with a focus on rotavirus, and to investigate the levels of malnutrition and other clinical factors in association with the severity of diarrhea. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanMethods: A prospective study was undertaken from May 2009 to March 2010, covering the rainy and dry seasons, at the Saint Camille Medical Center in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. A total of 309 children less than 5 years of age with diarrhea were enrolled and examined for rotavirus, bacterial, and parasitic infections, as well as clinico-epidemiological aspects. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanResults: At least one enteropathogen was detected in 57.9% (n = 179) of the children. Of these, 32.4% had rotavirus infections, 16.8% bacterial infections (enteropathogenic Escherichia coli 9.7%, Shigella spp 5.8%, and Salmonella spp 2.3%), and 18.8% parasitic infections (Giardia lamblia 11.3%, Trichomonas intestinalis 6.8%, Entamoeba histolytica/dispar 1.3%). During the cold dry period from December 2009 to February 2010, we observed a large increase in diarrhea cases, which was mainly attributed to rotavirus infections, as 63.8% of these diarrhea cases were positive for rotavirus. In contrast, no rotavirus infection was observed during the rainy season (June-September 2009), when the frequency of parasitic infections was high. Rotavirus and parasitic infections were age-related, with rotavirus being more prevalent in young children (andlt;12 months) and parasites more common in older children (andgt;12 months), while bacteria were equally prevalent among all age groups. Rotavirus infections exhibited more severe symptoms compared to bacteria and parasites, and were associated with fever, vomiting, and severe dehydration.
