Introduction: The increasing use of eye-tracking techniques in translation studies offers valuable insights into cognitive processes and behavioral strategies of translators, reflecting a significant trend within cognitive linguistics and translator training methodologies. Methods: This review harnesses quantitative bibliometric analysis through Bibliometrix R-package with qualitative content assessment to evaluate the trajectory and thematic evolution of eye-tracking research in translation studies. Through a dataset from the Web of Science, 56 articles were analyzed, revealing distinct thematic dimensions and trend dynamics. Results: The analysis revealed that eye-tracking is increasingly pivotal in exploring the cognitive and technological dimensions of translation. Central themes include interactions with translation tools, machine translation, and human-computer interaction, highlighting the importance of cognitive research in technology-driven translation. Niche areas such as English-Chinese translation and online consultation suggest specialized topics that warrant further investigation. Additionally, emerging themes like cognitive load and sight translation demonstrate a shift toward exploring real-time translation processing. Declining traditional topics, such as broader translation theories, indicate a growing integration of cognitive research with technological advancements. Conclusion: These findings elucidate the growth and diversification of eye-tracking applications in translation studies, emphasizing the method's importance in both academic research and practical applications, thereby informing future studies and enhancing translator training programs. The effects of translators’ personal lexical preferences on the perception of source texts are widely discussed descriptively, yet less researched experimentally. This article explores Joseph Conrad’s lexical choices and racist implications in presenting Africa and the fictional representation of black Africans. The study also questions whether Turkish translators manipulated the perception of Turkish expert readers through their lexical choices while presenting a fictional representation of black Africans to Turkish readers. To this end, 23 excerpts with racial overtones from the novella, Heart of Darkness, were examined and compared with corresponding excerpts from two translated Turkish versions of Heart of Darkness. Text-specific excerpts related to the representation of Africa and that of the African natives were selected. To avoid researcher bias, the judgements of seven experts in English Literature and/or Translation Studies were gained in the selection and analysis of the excerpts. The findings were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that the different translation strategies used by each of translators significantly affected the perception of the target readership. Also, it was found that translators are not passive receptors of source texts but rather serve as game-changers in manipulating the effect of the source text on the target readership in the case of racial overtones. Thomas Hood’s poem “The Song of the Shirt” was an immediate success when first published in Punch in 1843. Previous research has shown how the poem responded to the mid-nineteenth-century debate concerning the working situation of needlewomen. The ways in which this hugely popular poem was recontextualised in translation have, however, received surprisingly little attention. Arguing that British nineteenth-century social-reform texts were appropriated over time and via translation by socio-political interests whose agenda reached far beyond the aims of the original authors of these texts, the present article traces the way in which Hood’s poem spread through Europe and beyond. With a particular focus on the role that “The Song of the Shirt” played in Sweden, the article demonstrates how the poem transitioned from its initial expression of compassion to being employed by the Swedish early Socialist movement several decades later. When claims emerged that Ümit Deniz’s Murat Davman crime fiction series (1956–1974) was an adaptation of Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer series (1946–1996), they were quickly debunked. The claims, however, prompted questions about whether Deniz’ series may be an adaptation of other novels Deniz translated into Turkish. This article reads Deniz’ corpus with the tools of intertextuality and translation theory and characterizes his series as both a concealed translation/global adaptation of the Hammer series, other novels and an original work. In so doing, it brings together hitherto distinct disciplines and offers a revised constructive interpretation of the East–West relationship when it comes to discussion of the circulation of texts, which is usually structured by assumptions of the incompetency and backwardness of the East and the perceived superiority of the West. This paper examines notices with a directive function that have been translated from Greek into English in the public spaces of Thessaloniki. In particular, it explores the ways in which Greek politeness is expressed and how this politeness is rendered in the English translation of the original Greek texts. The paper uses photographic data collected in 2020. Using Brown and Levinson's (1987) concept of face, the methodology used is a combination of the qualitative ethnographic approach employed in contemporary linguistic landscape research and Bourdieu's habitus approach used in the sociology of translation. Purpose: To explore the interplay between human translators and AI tools, focusing on tertiary students' perceptions in the context of Portuguese-Chinese translations in Macao. Design/methodology/approach: This research employed a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative surveys were complemented by qualitative responses. Qualitative class observations (participant and non-participant) and autoethnography further enriched the insights. Participants included undergraduate and postgraduate students in translation studies from the Macao Polytechnic University. Findings: The data revealed a dual perspective: appreciation for AI's efficiency contrasted with concerns about its potential to overshadow human touch in translations, especially in cultural nuances. Views on integrating AI into curricula were diverse, but a balanced, synergistic approach between human expertise and AI efficiency emerged as a common theme. Originality/value: This study offers a fresh perspective by integrating various methodologies, capturing both statistical and experiential insights on the evolving relationship between AI and human translation efforts in academia. This empirical-theoretical inquiry aims to identify, describe, and propose solutions to address incon- sistent reproduction of derived terms containing recurring components in German-Ukrainian legal trans- lation. The study is grounded in translation-oriented terminology and seeks to establish new criteria for translation quality assessment. The manifold objectives encompass: 1) undertaking a scientific investiga- tion to demonstrate the problematical nature of intratextual term consistency in translation; 2) scrutinizing potential impacts of prospective translation regulating instruments on providing terminology consistency; 3) adducing extensive illustrations of adherence to the intratextual term component consistency principle while translating German legal texts into Ukrainian. The research proposes four heuristic hypotheses: 1) Term component inconsistency in translation sig- nificantly reduces translation quality, potentially leading to partial information loss or distortion, which af- fects the translation dominant. 2) Maintaining consistency in how term components are translated is cru- cial for ensuring high-quality specialized translations, especially in fields like legal translation. 3) Implicitly formulated quality requirements for specialized translation can induce strategic terminological-discursive errors, regardless of the translator’s professional experience or status, which can be attributed to trans- lator’s unconscious decisions. 4) Specialized lexicographic reference works, while functioning as translation regulating instruments, exhibit both general and component inconsistencies. Therefore, they can only serve as aids for exercising the translator’s term selection and decision-making competence. The comprehensively formulated methodology encompasses a blind translator experiment incorpo- rating three participants of disparate professional experience and status (two Ukrainian translation agen- cies and one translation studies master’s student), meticulous comparative intralingual and interlingual analysis of source and target texts, induction/deduction approach to identify recurrent translational phe- nomena, morphosemantic analysis to determine the internal semantic structure of legal terms, derivation analysis to explicate term-formation processes, and contrastive lexicographic analysis to assess the poten- tial of existing terminological records to ensure the term component consistency. The methodology pro- posed in the article allowed to examine invariant properties of the object (legal terms in both languages) under study from various translation-oriented terminology perspectives. An in-depth approach to consideration of intratextual terminology heterogeneity, which contradicts the re- quirements of current international standards for translation quality assurance, has led to the distinction of term component consistency and term component inconsistency in translation. It is established that recurring strate- gic terminological- discursive mistakes at the text level of multiple translations result from translation instructors/ scholars not sufficiently attending to the problematic issue. The overlooked translation quality criterion has led even experienced and well-regarded experiment participants to inadvertently make unconscious mistakes. Concurrently, the contrastive analysis of German-Ukrainian specialized dictionaries evinced their lim- itations in ensuring component consistency, spotlighting the indispensability of the translator’s role in up- holding this benchmark. The proposed glossary with verified equivalents for the terminological field of Ger- man “Unterhalt” demonstrates the potential for consistent translation of derived terms into Ukrainian. The extensive empirical evidence and elucidation of a novel translation studies method (viz., blind translator experiment) along with newly discovered concepts (inter alia term selection competence) ren- der this inquiry a worthwhile contribution toward enhancing German-Ukrainian legal translation quality. Ultimately, this is a commendable study advancing the field of translation-oriented terminology and con- tributing to the harmonization of German-Ukrainian terminological capital. Future research prospects in- clude developing and describing a microstrategy to ensure intratextual term component consistency and investigating the influences of explicit translation regulating instruments on specialized translation quality.

This article aims to examine the Euthymius Chudovski’s editing in the translation of «Epitome» by Constantine Armenopoulos, carried out by Epiphanius Slavinetsky in the second half of the XVII century. The research goal is to identify the directions of editing in this translation and substantiate the authorship of Euthymius Chudovski. The study focuses on the relationship between the Slavic translation of «Epitome» and the Greek original. The editorial revisions of Euthymius are analyzed primarily at the lexical and grammatical levels. The article author delves into the analysis of specific editorial positions, characterizing the language of the Chudov scribes. These positions include the rendering of the Greek substantivized infinitive, the use of demonstrative pronouns as personal pronouns, and the principle of morphemic and literal translation. The research material is based on the final version of the translation, copied by Euthymius (Sin. 129), as well as the possible draft of the translator and editor (Und. 40). Certain editorial positions are compared with materials relevant to the grammars used by the Chudov scribes. The significance of this work lies in the need for a more detailed linguistic investigation of the translations produced by the scribes of the Chudov school, which are valuable monuments of the period of the Nikonian reforms. The novelty of the research lies in introducing into scholarly discourse manuscripts that have not been previously studied by linguists and in defining the role played by Euthymius of the Chudov Monastery in the translation done by his teacher.

This research focuses on classifying translated and non-translated Chinese texts by analyzing syntactic rule features, using an integrated approach of machine learning and entropy analysis. The methodology employs information entropy to gauge the complexity of syntactic rules in both text types. The methodology is based on the concept of information entropy, which serves as a quantitative measure for the complexity inherent in syntactic rules as manifested from tree-based annotations. The goal of the study is to explore whether translated Chinese texts demonstrate syntactic characteristics that are significantly different from those of non-translated texts, thereby permitting a reliable classification between the two. To do this, the research calculates information entropy values for syntactic rules in two comparable corpora, one of translated and the other of non-translated Chinese texts. Then, various machine learning models are applied to these entropy metrics to identify any significant differences between the two groups. The results show significant differences in the syntactic structures. Translated texts have a higher degree of entropy, indicating more complex syntactic constructs compared to non-translated texts. For Judith Butler, the act of translating reminds us that in a global world we need a "multilingual epistemology," but also that all languages have foreignness built into them. A special issue on Wallace Stevens in relation to Germany offers the perfect occasion to investigate how his poetry survives in German. Of the seven book-length collections of Stevens's verse that have appeared in German translation so far, three are retained for analysis: Der Mann mit der blauen Gitarre (1995), Hellwach, am Rande des Schlafs (2011), and Teile einer Welt (2014). After a consideration of the remarkably different ways in which these books present themselves to the reader, and what their respective selection mechanisms are, a discussion of five clustered features seeks to demonstrate how Stevens's German translators combine "domesticating" and "foreignizing" approaches, respond to three formal aspects of his poetry (stanza formation, end rhyme, meter), deal with the sentence unit, arrange and rearrange line endings, and compose German varieties of heteroglossia. Information competence is essential in professional translation and interpreting. This paper gathers the views of professional translators and interpreters in Spain on information competence, by means of an exploratory qualitative study. A questionnaire composed essentially of open-ended questions was applied to gather data and the qualitative analysis software ATLAS.ti was used to code the results using thematic content analysis methods. The views provided by a sample of professional translators and interpreters (n = 156) on the importance of information competence were collected, together with their recommendations on this key competence for those who are starting their training in translation and interpreting. The study also explores the main information needs highlighted by professionals, the sources of information they use most frequently and how they verify information, and their opinions on the gender perspective (with explicit mention of inclusive language) as part of information competence in professional practice. The results show that professionals consider information competence to be absolutely essential in the framework of translation competence, and recommend reinforcing information literacy training in university undergraduate degree programmes. They have multiple information needs (from terminological to contextual) that make them turn to a wide range of information resources (mainly personal sources and online documentary resources), but they need to strengthen their knowledge for information evaluation. Regarding the gender perspective, professionals practically limit their answers to their opinions on inclusive language and, although most of them are in favour, some resistance is detected. From the diagnosis carried out in this research, opportunities for supporting information literacy instruction in undergraduate degrees and in continuing professional development are identified. This study aims to examine the appraisal of romanticism in autobiographical text from the perspective of translation study. The data were purposely taken from the autobiography of the first president of Indonesia, Sukarno, titled Sukarno, An Autobiography as told to Cindy Adams (1965) and its Indonesian translation (2014). The appraisal resources of romanticisms were evaluated by using Martin and White framework (2005) particularly in terms of attitude and graduation while the translation quality was assessed in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability (Nababan et al., 2012). This study reveals that appraisal devices contribute significantly to explaining romanticism through linguistic evidence of the attitude and graduation sub-systems. Appraisal theory, which has a great attention in investigating human emotions and feelings, is very appropriate to describe the characteristics of Sukarno's romanticism and its translated version. This article proposes a methodology to identify rhetorical energies that form within the diegetic timeline of movies and to translate these to creative sculpting of spacetime designs. In turn, the narrative manipulation of rhetorical spacetime correlates with that of the audience's emotional states. I achieved this by indexing fictional spacetime with movie barcodes to create a visual compression of sequential film frames into one solid image. I also discuss how patterns of spatial and temporal arrangement within the selected film trailer occurs. I utilise the short form movie trailer The Monster (2020) as my case study as it is a work that I co-directed. Essentially, I propose a method to show how temporal designs of a fictional dimension may be sculpted and intensified. For comparative purposes, I discuss a related study on Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant (2015). I conclude that the spacetime relationships of the timeline exhibit a propensity to result in dramaturgic tension patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Translation research from the perspective of digital humanities is not only a methodology but also a research paradigm. The emergence of translation research from the perspective of digital humanities not only led to significant changes in translation research methods but also greatly expanded and deepened translation research. This article clarifies the definition of digital humanities in translation studies, traces the origin of digital humanities theory, sorts out the relevant research progress, discusses the application fields and advantages of digital humanities, and puts translation studies in the context of digital humanities development. By combing and analyzing the changes and developments, it discovers the development prospects of the new translation paradigm from the perspective of digital humanities so as to provide reference and inspiration for promoting the development of translation studies under the digital humanities approach. This article reports on the intellectual structures and research trends in the field of Translation Studies (TS). Co-citation analysis and keyword analysis were conducted based on research articles in eleven prestigious TS journals indexed in Web of Science-Social Science Citation Index (WoS-SSCI) database from 2007 to 2021. In general, results indicate that TS has continued to flourish over the examined 15 years, evidenced by annual research outputs, number of publications per journal, countries/regions active in TS, as well as institutions and authors producing TS research. Meanwhile, the co-citation analysis not only unveils the intellectual structures that constitute TS, but also maps several relatively clear-cut research sub-areas within TS. Furthermore, a diachronic and comparative analysis of high-frequency keywords reveals that the thematic landscape of TS has undergone profound changes, with some early-dominant topics or concepts gradually losing their initial appeal; while a series of newly developed or borrowed concepts, methods and issues have gained increased popularity. The data confirms the multidisciplinary nature and continuous 'paradigm shifts' of TS. Based on these results, we discuss the achievements that TS has made as well as its drawbacks, before reflecting on the implications of the analysis for the direction of future research. Academic collaboration is an efficient way to boost research productivity. It has long been a common method in various disciplines, with extensive research on collaboration status. However, very little research has been undertaken to delve into the academic collaboration in the field of Translation Studies (TS). This study collects articles and reviews (book review excluded) from the 14 A&HCI-indexed international journals in this field from 2011 to 2021, and utilizes BibExcel, Pajek, and VOSviewer to conduct a social network analysis in order to determine authorial collaboration patterns and trends in TS via a quantitative and qualitative analysis. The results reveal that academic collaboration has become a common practice with an increased collaboration rate from 23.25% to 39.58% over the last 11 years. Authors and institutions from developed countries have taken the central position in the academic collaboration network. Both specialized and literary translations are the focus of research, with the former taking the major trend. Finally, some implications are proposed to encourage more academic collaboration in TS. Transcreation is an inter-cultural and inter-linguistic activity, which has obtained particular academic interest recently. However, few studies have reviewed the current status quo on transcreation systematically, although transcreation has been applied in various fields such as literature and advertising translation. In this study, a systematic literature review is conducted to shed light on this topic by identifying and analysing genres, foci, methods, and theories related to transcreation. The databases cover Scopus, Web of Science and CNKI from 1995 to 2023. A total of 61 publications were identified with PRISMA 2020. The qualitative findings showed that (1) most studies of transcreation focus on literary and advertising, while other fields of audiovisual, news and political, training and interpreting need to be explored; (2) research foci of transcreation strategies, culture and ideology gain more attention while transcreation process and evaluation, localization and persuasion have not been much examined; (3) content analysis is most frequently adopted while other qualitative methods are less used. Besides, there is a lack of using quantitative and mixed methods; (4) systematical functional linguistics is often used as a pointcut to examine strategies of transcreation. Besides, multimodal social semiotics is used to explore transcreation through texts, pictures and videos. Other linguistic theories and cross-disciplinary theories remain unexplored in transcreation. The objective of this paper is to thoroughly investigate, that to translation of what genre of texts, Skopos theory is applied, as, there has been a lot of criticism on the theory, for its limitations and drawbacks, that it is not suitable for translation of literary and religious texts. The paper also examines the significance, place and practicality of Skopos theory in the modern Translation Studies in depth. This article also, encompasses the role of translation commission or brief, translator and target reader in the process of translation under the tenet of Skopos theory. In addition to that, the paper illustrates what translation techniques could be deployed in accordance with Skopos theory taking into consideration linguistic and extra-linguistic factors. The upheavals of recent years have underscored the depth of global interconnectedness, with events like the COVID-19 pandemic, advancements in AI, and armed conflicts prompting swift and unpredictable economic and social changes worldwide. In particular, the discussion delves into the power dynamics within academia, the unequal positioning of researchers in the global knowledge market, and the fundamental right of translation within economic relationships. Drawing from a conference held in Bratislava, Slovakia, in September 2023, this article addresses issues of translation and interpreting-related power dynamics against the backdrop of contemporary political, economic, and cultural developments. Speakers from diverse backgrounds explore how academia can respond to prevailing power hierarchies and disparities in visibility, and whether such structures can be challenged or altered. The discussion extends to the subjectivity inherent in research, including sources of funding, national affiliations, and personal values. Ethical considerations surrounding researcher positionality and appropriating research topics are scrutinized, with a focus on inclusivity and participation. The article emphasizes the importance of considering diverse perspectives and ensuring representation in research teams, particularly when studying topics related to minority groups. Overall, the dialogue offers insights into navigating power dynamics within academia, advocating for ethical research practices, and promoting inclusivity in scholarly pursuits. Audiovisual Translation (AVT) studies have been among the burgeoning disciplines in translation studies. Although much progress has been made in AVT, there has been little scholarship heretofore to sketch a comprehensive understanding of the domain mapping using bibliometric analysis. Based on a total of 1,424 journal articles collected from the Web of Science Core Collection (SSCI, A&HCI, and ESCI) and Scopus from 2002 to 2022, the publication trends, research progress, research hotspots, and research frontiers were analyzed and visualized using CiteSpace and VOSviewer. The results of this study show that research on AVT has experienced exponential growth in the last two decades and is likely to follow an upward trend in the future. Topics including subtitling, dubbing, audio description, reception, and media accessibility have been frequently explored; and active researchers from Europe and Iran, as well as productive institutes in Europe, the USA, and China, with publications in influential journals, have contributed greatly to AVT studies. The historical development of AVT studies also implies an interdisciplinary trend. These findings provide insights into AVT studies, with a comprehensive overview, which is of great reference significance for researchers in understanding the past achievements of the discipline and carrying out their future research. The Ottoman Muslim and Turkish women's movement provides a unique study field for researchers to follow the traces of women's change and the reconstruction of gender roles during the modernisation process initiated in the Ottoman Empire and continued in the transition period from a centuries-old empire to a nation-state, the Turkish Republic. It also sets a perfect example in terms of demonstrating how feminism can acquire different meanings when translated into different contexts. The article aims to approach the movement from the perspective of translation studies and views the change of women and their gender roles as a translation process. Investigating the translation of women within the relevant socio-cultural and political context based on two concepts of translation studies, rewriting and self-translation, the study suggests that women followed purposeful translation strategies in this process to expand their agency and authority in a patriarchal society over time. Presenting a short historical background of the movement with a discussion on women's agency through two strategies, the act of translation and gradualism, the article assesses the dynamics of the movement through the example of Seniha Sami Moralı, an underrepresented woman and translator in history, who experienced the process firsthand. This paper examines the successful translation and reception of Maria Dermoût's De tienduizend dingen (1955), most particularly in the U.S. and Italy: a quite unique case of a Dutch book which has found its way to world literature. In the late Fifties, this beautifully crafted literary work about the faded world of the Dutch Molucca's prior to WWII, could reckon on sympathy, empathy and interest in different countries. In the U.S., the ongoing decolonization process found a certain support, while Italy did its best to fully erase all traces of its colonial past and only few people with colonial roots tried to keep them alive. The ambivalent, liminar status of this fascinating book, written from a distant elsewhere by a displaced Eurasian author, can explain its appeal to translators Hans Koning and Quirino Maffi – both displaced, too – and international audiences. This empirical-theoretical inquiry aims to identify, describe, and propose solutions to address inconsistent reproduction of derived terms containing recurring components in German-Ukrainian legal translation. The study is grounded in translation-oriented terminology and seeks to establish new criteria for translation quality assessment. The manifold objectives encompass: 1) undertaking a scientific investigation to demonstrate the problematical nature of intratextual term consistency in translation; 2) scrutinizing potential impacts of prospective translation regulating instruments on providing terminology consistency; 3) adducing extensive illustrations of adherence to the intratextual term component consistency principle while translating German legal texts into Ukrainian. The research proposes four heuristic hypotheses: 1) Term component inconsistency in translation significantly reduces translation quality, potentially leading to partial information loss or distortion, which affects the translation dominant. 2) Maintaining consistency in how term components are translated is crucial for ensuring high-quality specialized translations, especially in fields like legal translation. 3) Implicitly formulated quality requirements for specialized translation can induce strategic terminological-discursive errors, regardless of the translator’s professional experience or status, which can be attributed to translator’s unconscious decisions. 4) Specialized lexicographic reference works, while functioning as transla-tion regulating instruments, exhibit both general and component inconsistencies. Therefore, they can only serve as aids for exercising the translator’s term selection and decision-making competence. The comprehensively formulated methodology encompasses a blind translator experiment incorporating three participants of disparate professional experience and status (two Ukrainian translation agencies and one translation studies master’s student), meticulous comparative intralingual and interlingual analysis of source and target texts, induction/deduction approach to identify recurrent translational phenomena, morphosemantic analysis to determine the internal semantic structure of legal terms, derivation analysis to explicate term-formation processes, and contrastive lexicographic analysis to assess the potential of existing terminological records to ensure the term component consistency. The methodology proposed in the article allowed to examine invariant properties of the object (legal terms in both languages) under study from various translation-oriented terminology perspectives. An in-depth approach to consideration of intratextual terminology heterogeneity, which contradicts the requirements of current international standards for translation quality assurance, has led to the distinction ofterm component consistency and term component inconsistency in translation. It is established that recurring strategic terminologicaldiscursive mistakes at the text level of multiple translations result from translation instructors/ scholars not sufficiently attending to the problematic issue. The overlooked translation quality criterion has led even experienced and well-regarded experiment participants to inadvertently make unconscious mistakes. Concurrently, the contrastive analysis of German-Ukrainian specialized dictionaries evinced their limitations in ensuring component consistency, spotlighting the indispensability of the translator’s role in up-holding this benchmark. The proposed glossary with verified equivalents for the terminological field of German “Unterhalt” demonstrates the potential for consistent translation of derived terms into Ukrainian. The extensive empirical evidence and elucidation of a novel translation studies method (viz., blind translator experiment) along with newly discovered concepts (inter alia term selection competence) render this inquiry a worthwhile contribution toward enhancing German-Ukrainian legal translation quality. Ultimately, this is a commendable study advancing the field of translation-oriented terminology and contributing to the harmonization of German-Ukrainian terminological capital. Future research prospects include developing and describing a microstrategy to ensure intratextual term component consistency and investigating the influences of explicit translation regulating instruments on specialized translation quality. Cybercrime has increased significantly, recently, as a result of both individual and group criminal practice, and is now a threat to individuals, organisations, and democratic systems worldwide. However, cybercrime raises two main challenges for legal systems: firstly, because cybercriminals operate online, cybercrime spans beyond the boundaries of specific jurisdictions, which constrains the operation of the police and, subsequently, the conviction of the perpetrators; secondly, since cybercriminals can operate from anywhere in the world, law enforcement agencies struggle to identify the origin of the communications, especially when obfuscation strategies are used, e.g. dark web fora. Nevertheless, cybercriminals inherently use language to communicate, so the linguistic analysis of suspect communications is particularly helpful in deterring cybercriminal practice. This article reports the potential of forensic translation in the fight against cybercrime. Although the term 'forensic translation' is typically understood as a synonym of 'legal translation', it is argued that the implications of forensic translation span beyond those of legal translation, to include analyses of language rights, of the right to interpretation and translation in legal procedures (in the EU), or even investigative and intelligence practices. Translation is a pervasive activity that is conducted, not only by professional translators, but also by lay speakers of language, often using machine translation systems. The ease of use of the latter makes it particularly suitable for cross-border criminal (e.g. extortion or fraud) and cybercriminal communications (e.g. cybertrespass, cyberfraud, cyberpiracy, cyberporn or child online porn, cyberviolence or cyberstalking). This article presents the results of the analysis of cybercriminal communications from a forensic translation perspective. It demonstrates that translation is frequently used to spread cybercriminal communications, and that reverse-engineering the translational procedure will assist law enforcement agencies in narrowing down their pool of suspects and, consequently, deter cybercriminal threats. Technological advancements in computer science, particularly in machine translation (MT), have progressively transformed the translation profession. Recent developments in MT, such as neural machine translation tools and AI-powered chatbots, have improved translation speed and accuracy, shifting the translator’s role more toward that of an editor or proofreader and expanding the scope of translator competencies. However, with the growing role of automated systems, professional translators have expressed concerns about the future of their profession. This paper aims to highlight the views of Polish professional translators, students of translation, translation teachers, and other language professionals on this topic. The findings presented are part of a broader international pilot study on perceptions of the future of the translation profession in the era of artificial intelligence. The analysis reveals that while the prevailing opinion is that human translators will always be necessary, the increasing influence of AI-powered tools cannot be underestimated. Tacitus’ Germania was translated into Danish twice in the 1790s, first by the historian and jurist Gustav Ludvig Baden (1764–1839) in 1795, and then by his father, the professor of rhetoric Jacob Baden (1735–1805) in 1797. Both translations can be understood as part of a sustained effort to introduce Tacitean and other concepts from classical literature to enrich philosophical reasoning in the vernacular. The politics of the translations were radically at odds. Through the rhetorical use of conceptual vocabulary, exhaustive footnotes, and an unstable temporality, G. L. Baden constructed a narrative of a democratic republican and rationalist ‘golden age’ relevant for contemporary Denmark-Norway. Jacob Baden’s foreignizing translation was a conservative response. It employed a stable modern historicity which separated the ‘golden age’ from the barbarous reality of northern antiquity. The article raises the question of the significance of oblique argument in the constrained Danish-Norwegian public sphere of the 1790s. The form of G. L. Baden’s translation is characterised by a temporal and linguistic strategic ambiguity. This provided a veil of deniability for the translator, but the translation was clearly understood to be a radical polemic, eliciting reactions in the public sphere.

The quality of some Chinese literary translations has raised concerns among some translation scholars. This qualitative study presents an examination of Juliane House’s latest translation quality assessment model in evaluating the quality of ‘Sweltering Summer’, the English translation of ‘Yanre de xiatian’, a short Chinese story. House’s model reveals that the translation quality is dependent on the matching degree of the textual profile and function between the original and translation. The article concludes that despite minor discrepancies along the dimensions of field, tenor, and mode leading to minor disagreements of ideational and interpersonal functional components between the source text and the target text, the original and its overt translation are largely equivalent at the level of language/text, register, as well as genre, and the overall quality of the translation remains adequate by providing mismatch and match examples and interpretations in support of the conclusion. This study confirms the feasibility and reliability of House’s model, offering insights for translation scholars interested in assessing translation quality in the realm of short literary works and providing constructive suggestions for translators of Chinese literature. Future research could explore sufficient syntactic and textual examples using quantitative data and the mismatches between the original and the translated texts.

IntroductionThe increasing use of eye-tracking techniques in translation studies offers valuable insights into cognitive processes and behavioral strategies of translators, reflecting a significant trend within cognitive linguistics and translator training methodologies.MethodsThis review harnesses quantitative bibliometric analysis through Bibliometrix R-package with qualitative content assessment to evaluate the trajectory and thematic evolution of eye-tracking research in translation studies. Through a dataset from the Web of Science, 56 articles were analyzed, revealing distinct thematic dimensions and trend dynamics.ResultsThe analysis revealed that eye-tracking is increasingly pivotal in exploring the cognitive and technological dimensions of translation. Central themes include interactions with translation tools, machine translation, and human-computer interaction, highlighting the importance of cognitive research in technology-driven translation. Niche areas such as English-Chinese translation and online consultation suggest specialized topics that warrant further investigation. Additionally, emerging themes like cognitive load and sight translation demonstrate a shift toward exploring real-time translation processing. Declining traditional topics, such as broader translation theories, indicate a growing integration of cognitive research with technological advancements.ConclusionThese findings elucidate the growth and diversification of eye-tracking applications in translation studies, emphasizing the method’s importance in both academic research and practical applications, thereby informing future studies and enhancing translator training programs.

The virginity test is a long-standing tradition that has been documented in at least 20 countries around the globe (WHO, 2018). Women and girls are frequently subjected to or forced to undergo this test for various reasons. In the Indonesian context, this gynecological examination conducted under the belief to determine if a woman has had vaginal intercourse has to be experienced by female military candidates. In response, the Indonesian army has set to remove this somewhat controversial policy. Through media, this issue was packed in such a way that reflects the media's stance. Accordingly, this research aims to investigate how media take a stance toward this issue and how the translated version delivers it from the perspective of translation studies and appraisal theory using the qualitative method. Appraisal resources identified the data and compared the original text to the Indonesian versions retrieved from the ABC online news portal (Australian and Indonesia-based). This method is conducted to gather and interpret any attitudinal resources in both original and translated texts. It reveals that the translated version, compared to the more neutral-sounded original one, exploits a more clear-cut attitude towards the issue. Various attitudinal lexis including invasive, gender-based, victim and abusive, are chosen to revoice her stance that this practice is groundless. Through its translation, the author articulates her attitude louder. It proves that different target readers influence how the information is packed and constructed. As a re-situated text, translation barely occurs in an empty space.

This article looks at the life of Henry Holdship Ware (1908-1999), the grandson of the founder of Atlanta University. Captain Henry H. Ware was an aide and interpreter to Major General John Deane, Chief of the U.S. Military Mission to the Soviet Union during World War 2. In this capacity, he was an interpreter with the U.S. Army assigned to the Tripartite Conference in Moscow (1943) and Conferences at Tehran (1943) and Yalta (1945), and a liaison officer and interpreter during Operation Frantic, a joint American-Soviet campaign of shuttle bombing missions in Poltava, Ukraine, in June-September 1944. He was also present at the official surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany at Karlshorst on May 8, 1945, and interpreted toasts at the banquet of celebration after the ceremony. Henry Ware learnt Russian during his five-year stay as a student at Plekhanov Institute in Moscow, where he studied economics and was recruited by the NKVD to report on the American community in Moscow. Back in the USA, he was independently recruited by the Golos-Bentley Soviet espionage network under the codename 'Vick'. In 1975, probably inspired by his study of the Soviet economy, he founded the Useful Services Exchange (USE), a community-based organization in Reston, Virginia, enabling neighbors to help each other through the exchange of services. The discussion draws on available visuals, memoirs, newspaper sources, and declassified documents.

This article proposes a linguistic-textual analysis model inspired by the construal theory of Ronald W. Langacker, with its application in a study of four Chinese translations of the preface of the Book of Disquiet, posthumous work by Fernando Pessoa with authorship attributed at last to semi-heteronym Bernardo Soares. In the preface, the empirical author invents the encounter of a first-person narrator with the fictional author of the Book in a restaurant in Lisbon. Our analysis aims to understand in what way and at what level those translations retell the story told by the original preface in line with the linguistic-textual manifestations of the construal operations.
