We experimentally demonstrate storage and on-demand release of phase-sensitive, photon-number superposition states of the form $\alpha |0\rangle + \beta e^{i\theta} |1\rangle$ for an optical quantized oscillator mode. For this purpose, we introduce a phase-probing mechanism to a storage system composed of two concatenated optical cavities, which was previously employed for storage of phase-insensitive single-photon states [Phys. Rev. X 3, 041028 (2013)]. This is the first demonstration of all-optically storing highly nonclassical and phase-sensitive quantum states of light. The strong nonclassicality of the states after storage becomes manifest as a negative region in the corresponding Wigner function shifted away from the origin in phase space. This negativity is otherwise, without the phase information of the memory system, unobtainable. While our scheme includes the possibility of optical storage, on-demand release and synchronization of arbitrary single-rail qubit states, it is not limited to such states. In fact, our technique is extendible to more general phase-sensitive states such as multiphoton superposition or entangled states, and thus it represents a significant step toward advanced optical quantum information processing, where highly non-classical states are utilized as resources., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

We propose an experimental scheme to generate, in a heralded fashion, arbitrary quantum superpositions of two-mode optical states with a fixed total photon number $n$ based on weakly squeezed two-mode squeezed state resources (obtained via weak parametric down conversion), linear optics, and photon detection. Arbitrary $d$-level (qudit) states can be created this way where $d=n+1$. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate our scheme for $n=2$. The resulting qutrit states are characterized via optical homodyne tomography. We also discuss possible extensions to more than two modes concluding that, in general, our approach ceases to work in this case. For illustration and with regards to possible applications, we explicitly calculate a few examples such as NOON states and logical qubit states for quantum error correction. In particular, our approach enables one to construct bosonic qubit error-correction codes against amplitude damping (photon loss) with a typical suppression of $\sqrt{n}-1$ losses and spanned by two logical codewords that each correspond to an $n$-photon superposition for two bosonic modes., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Quality of individual photons and their ability to interfere is traditionally tested by measuring the Hong-Ou-Mandel photon bunching effect. However, this phase insensitive measurement only tests the particle aspect of the quantum interference. Motivated by these limitations, we formulate a witness capable of recognizing both the quality and the coherence of two photons from a single set of measurements. We exploit the conditional nonclassical squeezing which is sensitive to both the quality of the single photons and their indistinguishability and we show that it can be used to irectly reveal both the particle and the wave aspects of the quantum interference. A fundamental element of quantum information processing with photonic qubits is the nonclassical quantum interference between two photons when they bunch together via the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect. Ultimately, many such pure photons must be processed in complex interferometric networks, and for this it is essential to synchronize the arrival times of the flying photons preserving their purity. Here we demonstrate for the first time the HOM interference of two heralded, pure optical photons synchronized through two independent quantum memories. Controlled storage times up to 1.8 microseconds for about 90 events per second were achieved with purities sufficiently high for a negative Wigner function confirmed with homodyne measurements.

Currently the standard light sensors for imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes are the classical photo multiplier tubes that are using bialkali photo cathodes. About eight years ago we initiated an improvement program with the Photo Multiplier Tube (PMT) manufacturers Hamamatsu (Japan), Electron Tubes Enterprises (England) and Photonis (France) for the needs of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. As a result, after about 40 years of stagnation of the peak Quantum Efficiency (QE) on the level of 25-27%, new PMTs appeared with a peak QE of 35%. These have got the name super-bialkali. The second significant upgrade has happened very recently, as a result of a dedicated improvement program for the candidate PMT for Cherenkov Telescope Array. The latter is going to be the next generation major instrument in the field of very high energy gamma astrophysics and will consist of over 100 telescopes of three different sizes of 23m, 12m and 4-7m, located both in southern and northern hemispheres. Now PMTs with average peak QE of approximately 40% became available. Also, the photo electron collection efficiency of the previous generation PMTs of 80- 90% has been enhanced towards 95-98% for the new ones. The after-pulsing of novel PMTs has been reduced towards the level of 0.02% for the set threshold of 4 photo electrons.
