Abstract

In previous works, the authors investigated the relationships between linear stability of a generated linear series $|V|$ on a curve $C$, and slope stabillity of the vector bundle $M_{V,L} := \ker (V \otimes \mathcal{O}_C \to L)$. In particular, the second named author and L. Stoppino conjecture that, for a complete linear system $|L|$, linear (semi)stability is equivalent to slope (semi)stability of $M_V$, and the first and third named authors proved that this conjecture holds for hyperelliptic and for generic curves. In this work we provide a counterexample to this conjecture on any smooth plane curve of degree $7$.

Abstract

Livestock farming is vital to a country's economy, and technological innovations in animal genetics and reproductive biotechnologies are key for environmental and socioeconomic development. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of Coffea arabica grounds (CAG) extract on the semen parameters of Fleckvieh cattle. CAG was processed, and its antioxidant capacity was assessed using DPPH, FRAP, and total phenols assays. Semen was collected from a pedigree bull and analysed macroscopically and microscopically. Different concentrations of CAG (0, 1, 1.5, and 2 mg/ml) were tested at 4, 12, 24, and 36 h post-refrigeration. The study used a completely randomised design with ten replications, and variables such as motility, kinetic parameters, membrane functionality, and acrosomal integrity were analysed. The normal distribution of the variables -- motility, kinetic parameters, membrane functionality, and acrosomal integrity -- was analysed using the Shapiro-Wilk statistical test (P > 0.05). An analysis of variance was then performed with a significance level of P < 0.05 to compare the means, using InfoStat software. Results showed that 1 mg of CAG significantly improved total motility and progressive motility at 4 h, along with kinetic parameters and membrane integrity. Overall, CAG exhibits antioxidant properties that enhance sperm characteristics, particularly at 1 mg/ml concentration after 4 h of refrigeration. However, further studies are needed to understand better the mechanisms of action and the overall efficacy of CAG as an antioxidant agent in this specific context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The intestine and associated bacterial microbiota have a central role the physiology and homoeostasis of the host. The understanding of how farming conditions affect the intestine and associated microbiota of fish is the high importance to counteract the potential threats to health and welfare. Thus, this thesis aims to understand the role of stressful husbandry conditions on the intestine and associated microbiota of rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon. Within this context, the role of Pediococcus acidilactici as health promoter was also investigated Chapter 3 investigated the replacement of fishmeal by different plant protein ingredients in rainbow trout. The results of this chapter revealed that the effect of P. acidilactici on the microbiota of distal intestine in rainbow trout was dependent on the ingredients of the diet. The results also showed that the FM substitution induced major changes in the intestinal microbiota. Moreover, the modulation induced by plant-based diets on the microbiota varied according to the ingredients used. Chapter 4 studied the effect of dietary oxytetracycline in the distal intestinal microbiota of rainbow trout and the role of P. acidilactici to ameliorate the impact of antibiotic therapy. Experimental groups fed the diets with oxytetracycline had substantial changes in the distal intestinal microbiota including a decrease in the bacterial diversity. P. acidilactici did not ameliorate the effect of antibiotic therapy in the intestinal microbiota. Chapter 5 used Atlantic salmon during smoltification to study the changes in the microbiota of distal intestine and the role of P. acidilactici to promote intestinal health. The results showed that bacterial communities in the mucosa differed from the digesta. Seawater transfer and P. acidilactici had significant changes in the intestinal microbiota of both mucosa and digesta. However, the modulatory effect of both factors evaluated was larger in the mucosa-associated microbiota than in the digesta-associated microbiota. Furthermore, P. acidilactici induced a significant increase in antiviral-related genes. Chapter 6 investigated the replacement of fish oil by rapeseed oil alone or combined with P. acidilactici on the intestinal health and microbiota of two intestinal regions in Atlantic salmon. Replacement of fish oil by rapeseed oil alone or in combination with P. acidilactici supplementation did not induce major changes in the intestinal health and microbiota. The bacterial communities found were significantly different between the pyloric caeca and mid-intestine. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to new knowledge regarding the effect of dietary supplementation of P. acidilactici and the impact of different potential challenging factors in the health and intestinal microbiota of farmed salmonid species.

Abstract

In this study, a cooperative robotic system comprising two Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm (SCARA) robots was developed and simulated. An algorithm was proposed for the coordination of robots in cooperative tasks, along with a Rapidly exploring Random Tree (RRT) path planner for obstacle avoidance. The proposed system proved effective in transferring objects between robots and in handling various scenarios of variable complexity without collisions. The implementation of advanced trajectory planning and coordination algorithms significantly improves the adaptability and autonomy of robotic systems, allowing robots to predict and react to the movements of their counterparts and changes in the environment in real time. This capability is crucial for maintaining a safe and efficient work environment. The importance of synchronization and effective communication between robots is highlighted to avoid collisions and optimize trajectories and cycle times. All tests were conducted in virtual environments, allowing for the evaluation and refinement of the performance of the robots' performance under controlled conditions. The positive results obtained in the simulations suggest that the system is well suited for future practical implementation in industrial and manufacturing applications, such as chemical handling, collaborative welding, quality inspection, among others. These findings underscore the potential of the cooperative SCARA system to improve the efficiency and safety in industrial applications using advanced algorithms and control techniques, establishing a solid foundation for future research and development in the field of cooperative robotics. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship between the marketing plan and the quality of customer service with the brand positioning of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) retailers in the commerce sector in the May region. The analysis is based on the application of 107 surveys carried out randomly to entrepreneurs in the May region and making use of statistical analysis with SPSS. 39 elements were analyzed: for the variable Y brand positioning 26 elements; for variable X1 marketing plan, 5 elements; and for variable X2 quality of customer service, 8 elements. It was found that there is a significant correlation of the proposed variables Marketing Plan (X1) and Quality in Customer Service (X2) with the Positioning of a brand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The present study explored the predictive values of milk leukocyte differentials (MLD) as a basis for improving the diagnosis of intramammary infections (IMIs) and subclinical mastitis. Quarter milk samples were collected for bacteriological analysis, quarter somatic cell count (qSCC), and MLD. The MLD were assessed using the cytospin technique, direct microscopic smears, and flow cytometry. The predictive values of each single leukocyte population and useful potential indices that could better reflect immune complexity were also calculated. Changes in the percentage of any leukocyte alone failed to substantially improve the predictive value of qSCC in diagnosing IMIs. Although certain parameters increased the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) as a result of increased specificity values, a slight reduction in sensitivity was observed. The so-called CD8 complex was a unique parameter which improved both the sensitivity (78.79 %) and the specificity (80.77 %) in IMI diagnosis, resulting in the highest area under the ROC curve (0.87). To diagnose subclinical mastitis, the percentage of macrophages and the sum of the percentage PMNLs and T CD8+ cells divided by the percentage of macrophages showed the highest predictive values (sensitivity = 79.63, specificity = 73.68, and area under the ROC curve = 0.83) in the differentiation of the inflammatory condition status of cows. In conclusion, this study provides further insights into using T CD8+ lymphocytes in diagnosing bovine IMIs, combined with PMNLs and macrophages. The antidromic trend of macrophages vs. PMNLs and T CD8+ lymphocytes due to the increasing qSCCs was crucial to differentiating quarters under both inflammatory and non-inflammatory conditions.

Abstract

The state of charge of a battery depends on many magnitudes, but only voltage and intensity are included in mathematical equations because other variables are complex to integrate into. The contribution of this work was to obtain a model to determine the state of charge with these complex variables. This method was developed considering four models, the multilayer feed-forward backpropagation models of two and three input variables used supervised training, with the variable-learning-rate backpropagation training function, five and seven neurons in the hidden layer, respectively, achieving an optimal training. Meanwhile, the radial basis neural network models of two and three input variables were trained with the hybrid method, the propagation constant with a value of 1 and 80 neurons in the hidden layer. As a result, the radial basis neural network with the variable-learning-rate training function, considering the discharge temperature, was the one with the best performance, with a correlation coefficient of 0.99182 and a confidence interval of 95% (0.98849; 0.99516). It is then concluded that artificial neural networks have high performance when modeling nonlinear systems, whose parameters are difficult to measure with time variation, so estimating them in formulas where they are omitted is no longer necessary, which means an accurate SOC. Abstract

El presente ensayo describe las principales ventajas que tienen los diseños constructivos de los puentes atirantados. En primer lugar, se presenta la estructura que compone este tipo de puentes, sus diseños dependiendo la ubicación de los tirantes y las ventajas que estos ocasionan al cumplir con el aval de la Organización Internacional de Normalización (ISO) permitiendo una estructura eficiente y de calidad a la hora de su construcción. Posteriormente el ensayo se basó en los conceptos de otros autores para generar un dictamen de cual diseño es mejor para tenerlo presente a la hora de construir un puente atirantado y saber si es el más eficiente por su calidad de diseño. Para este ensayo el puente semi-arpa es el diseño más completo ya que reúne las ventajas de los otros diseños de puentes que son el tipo arpa y tipo abanico, dando una eficacia no solo en la parte estructural sino también en lo estético. This essay describes the main advantages of the construction designs of cable-stayed bridges. In the first place, the structure that makes up this type of bridges is presented, its designs depend on the location of the stay cables and the advantages that these cause when complying with the endorsement of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) allowing an efficient structure and quality at the time of its construction. Subsequently, the essay was based on the concepts of other authors to generate an opinion of which design is best to keep in mind when building a cable-stayed bridge and to know if it is the most efficient due to its design quality. For this test, the semi-harp bridge is the most complete design since it brings together the advantages of the other bridge designs that are the harp type and the fan type, giving efficiency not only in the structural part but also in the aesthetic. Abstract

Con el Objetivo de determinar los factores de riesgo asociados a la morbilidad materna grave en mujeres ingresadas en la unidad de cuidados intensivos, Hospital Gaspar García Laviana-Rivas. Se realizó un estudio durante el periodo de enero 2020 al diciembre 2021. El Diseño metodológico: se realizó un estudio analítico, tipo casos y controles, con enfoque cuantitativo, se utilizó hipótesis para dar el carácter explicativo del problema, cuyo universo y muestra la constituyo 90 embarazadas que durante su atención presento un evento adverso, se defino 30 mujeres como casos; y 60 controles sin morbilidad materna grave, ambos grupos cumplen criterios de inclusión y exclusión para el estudio. Resultados: Los factores de riesgo en la morbilidad materna grave fueron; en características sociodemográficos; estado civil soltero, unión estable (OR 1.12), antecedentes patológico personal (OR 1.00), estado nutricional sobre peso, obesas (OR 1.08), en factores Gineco –obstétricos; gestas primíparas (OR 1.07), paridad nulípara (OR 1.10), presencia de aborto (OR 3.25), parto gemelar (OR 2.15), antecedente de anomalías congénitas (OR 9.07), semanas gestacional menor 36.6/7 y mayor e igual a 40 SG (OR 1.40), valoración por especialista (OR 1.70); en relación a las patologías materna durante el embarazo; infecciones (OR 3.22); hemorragia 2do y 3er trimestre (OR 3.80); HPP (OR 3.80); DM tipo2 y trastornos tiroideos (OR 1.55); complicaciones obstétricas (OR 1.21); intervenciones (OR 1.55). 40. La utopía de una economía para la vida

Abstract

In the article, approximations are made to the utopian statements of an economy for life and the relations that the subjects establish with utopias are determined. In the method of analysis, the transcendences that the subjects carry out during the development of the economic process are detected. The results indicate that the general utopian statement of an economy for life is “life on Earth is eternal and full life” (general transcendence). The subjects project four specific utopian statements (partial transcendences) in this economic perspective, one of them focused on the total satisfaction of physical-biological needs through the optimal consumption of goods. From this statement, which is immersed in the economic field, ten other statements are derived (sub-partial transcendences) linked, from an economy for life, with full employment, with economic and technical feasibility in productions and with the income of the subjects. Utopias are distorted when they enter the framework of transcendental illusion; in contrast, they make sense in relation to human life when they are based on imaginations, En el artículo se hacen aproximaciones a los enunciados utópicos de una economía para la vida y se determinan las relaciones que establecen los sujetos con las utopías. En el método de análisis se detectan las trascendencias que realizan los sujetos durante el desarrollo del proceso económico. Los resultados señalan que el enunciado utópico general de una economía para la vida es “la vida en la Tierra es vida eterna y plena” (trascendencia general). Los sujetos proyectan cuatro enunciados utópicos específicos (trascendencias parciales) en dicha perspectiva económica, uno de ellos centrado en la satisfacción total de las necesidades físico-biológicas mediante el consumo óptimo de bienes. De este enunciado, que se encuentra inmerso en el campo económico, se derivan otros diez enunciados (trascendencias subparciales) vinculados, a partir de una economía para la vida, con el pleno empleo, con la factibilidad económica y técnica en las producciones y con el ingreso de los sujetos. Las utopías se distorsionan cuando entran al cuadro de la ilusión trascendental; en contraste, obtienen sentido en relación con la vida humana cuando se basan en imaginaciones.

El problema de investigación es que la metafísica de la praxis humana se confunde con la metafísica de la acción humana, pero la primera tiene rasgos específicos y la segunda es general. Ambas metafísicas no están separadas, una forma parte de la otra. El objetivo del artículo, por tanto, es determinar las particularidades de la metafísica de la praxis humana a partir del sujeto de la praxis que delinea Hinkelammert. El método empleado consta de tres partes. Primera; identificación de los sujetos que se forman en el trayecto que siguen los seres humanos para mantener su vida en la sociedad. El sujeto natural, vivo, cognoscente, trascendental, necesitado, con necesidades concretas y social emprende procesos como sujeto actuante, creador de leyes, productor, práctico y de la praxis. Segunda; descripción de las imaginaciones o ilusiones al activar su lado trascendental en cada una de estas fases. Hace una trascendencia general y varias parciales. Hinkelammert afirma que la trascendencia general —en tanto imaginación— corresponde al Reino Mesiánico de Pablo de Tarso: una Tierra con igualdad humana absoluta, sin muerte y sin leyes. Tercera; definición de las características del sujeto de la praxis. Los resultados indican que este sujeto se desenvuelve —en los procesos de su vida— con factibilidad trascendental. La factibilidad está sustentada en imaginaciones. El sujeto de la acción no necesariamente proyecta imaginaciones. La metafísica de la praxis humana tiene sus bases, en consecuencia, en la factibilidad trascendental. La metafísica de la acción humana puede contener ilusiones que anulen dicha factibilidad. La construcción de las sociedades mejor posible, en conclusión, requiere de la factibilidad trascendental., The research problem is that the metaphysics of human praxis is confused with the metaphysics of human action, but the first has specific features and the second is general. Both metaphysics is not separate, one is part of the other. The objective of the paper, therefore, is to determine the particularities of the metaphysics of human praxis from the subject of praxis outlined by Hinkelammert. The method used consists of three parts. First; identification of the subjects that are formed in the path that human beings follow to maintain their life in society. The natural, living, knowing, transcendental, needy, with concrete needs and social subject undertakes processes as an acting, creator of laws, producer, practitioner and praxis subject. Second; description of the imaginations or illusions when activating its transcendental side in each of these phases. It makes a general transcendence and several partial ones. Hinkelammert affirms that the general transcendence —as imagination— corresponds to the Messianic Kingdom of Paul of Tarsus: An Earth with absolute human equality, without death and without laws. Third; definition of the characteristics of the subject of praxis. The results indicate that this subject develops —in the processes of his life— with transcendental feasibility. Feasibility is based on imaginations. The subject of the action does not necessarily project imaginations. The metaphysics of human praxis has its bases, consequently, in transcendental feasibility. The metaphysics of human action may contain illusions that nullify such feasibility. The construction of the best possible societies, in conclusion, requires transcendental feasibility., O problema da pesquisa é que a metafísica da práxis humana é confundida com a metafísica da ação humana, mas a primeira tem características específicas e a segunda é geral. As duas metafísicas não são separadas, uma é parte da outra. O objetivo do artigo, portanto, é determinar as particularidades da metafísica da práxis humana com base no tema da práxis que Hinkelammert delineia. O método empregado consiste em três partes. Primeiro, a identificação dos sujeitos que se formam no caminho que os seres humanos seguem para manter sua vida na sociedade. O sujeito natural, vivo, cognoscente, transcendental, carente, concreto e social empreende processos como sujeito atuante, legislador, produtor, prático e praxis. Segundo; descrição das imaginações ou ilusões, ativando seu lado transcendental em cada uma dessas fases. Ele faz uma transcendência geral e várias parciais. Hinkelammert afirma que a transcendência geral - como imaginação - corresponde ao Reino Messiânico de Paulo de Tarso: uma Terra com absoluta igualdade humana, sem morte e sem leis. Terceiro; definição das características do tema da práxis. Os resultados indicam que este assunto se desenvolve - nos processos de sua vida - com viabilidade transcendental. A viabilidade é baseada em imaginações. O tema da ação não projeta necessariamente imaginações. A metafísica da práxis humana é, portanto, baseada na viabilidade transcendental. A metafísica da ação humana pode conter ilusões que anulam tal viabilidade. A construção das melhores sociedades possíveis, em conclusão, requer viabilidade transcendental.

Abstract

Dissertação para obtenção do grau de Mestre no Instituto Universitário Egas Moniz No dia 31 de dezembro de 2019 o Centro de Controlo de Doenças Chinês reportou um conjunto de casos de pneumonia na cidade de Wuhan com etiologia desconhecida. Em janeiro de 2020, foi sequenciado e isolado o possível agente causador como sendo uma nova estirpe de coronavírus, denominada SARS-CoV-2 e, consequentemente, Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) declarou a epidemia causada por este vírus como um problema de saúde pública a nível internacional. Os coronavírus pertencem à família Coronaviridae. Atualmente sabe-se que o SARS-CoV-2 é a sétima estirpe de coronavírus e a quarta pertencente ao género Betacoronavirus que afeta humanos. O genoma do SARS-CoV-2 é uma molécula de ácido ribonucleico não segmentado de cadeia positiva com aproximadamente 30 mil bases. Este vírus caracteriza-se por apresentar quatro proteínas estruturais (spike, S, envelope, E, membrana, M, e nucleocápside, N) e dezasseis proteínas não estruturais (NSP, identificadas de 1 a 16). Todas estas proteínas desempenham funções importantes na patogénese da infeção do vírus. O forte investimento na investigação e desenvolvimento de fármacos tendo como alvo proteínas que desempenham funções cruciais no ciclo de replicação do SARS-CoV-2, nomeadamente nos mecanismos de entrada e de replicação viral, ou fármacos que contribuam para a diminuição da resposta imune do hospedeiro, resultará na melhoria da eficácia terapêutica da COVID-19. Porém, é um processo moroso e incompatível com a urgência do atual estado pandémico. As estratégias terapêuticas para a COVID-19 recomendadas à data pela OMS são baseadas no reposicionamento de fármacos. Embora apresentem sucesso limitado, estes fármacos já comercializados com indicações para outras patologias, têm permitido algum controlo da progressão da severidade da doença. Até ao dia 24 de setembro de 2021, a OMS publicou sete recomendações terapêuticas contra a COVID-19, das quais apenas três revelaram ter efeitos clínicos benéficos em doentes infetados pelo SARS-CoV-2. A utilização de corticosteroides sistémicos, de inibidores do recetor da interleucina 6 (tocilizumab e sarilumab) e de anticorpos monoclonais neutralizantes (casirivimab e imdevimab) mostraram ser opções eficazes no combate à pandemia da COVID-19. On 31 December 2019, the Chinese Centre for Disease Control reported a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China with unknown aetiology. In January 2020, the possible causative agent was sequenced and isolated as a new strain of coronavirus, named SARS-CoV-2 and consequently, World Health Organization (WHO) declared the epidemic caused by this virus as an international public health problem. Coronaviruses belong to the Coronaviridae family. SARS-CoV-2 is now known to be the seventh coronavirus strain and the fourth belonging to the Betacoronavirus genus to affect humans. The genome of SARS-CoV-2 is a non-segmented positive-stranded ribonucleic acid molecule of approximately 30 thousand bases. This virus is characterised by having four structural proteins (spike, S, envelope, E, membrane, M, and nucleocapsid, N) and sixteen non-structural proteins (NSP, identified from 1 to 16). All these proteins play important roles in the pathogenesis of virus infection. The strong investment in research and development of drugs targeting proteins that play crucial roles in the SARS-CoV-2 replication cycle, namely in the viral entry and replication mechanisms, or drugs that contribute to the downregulation of the host immune response, will result in improved therapeutic efficacy of COVID-19. However, this is a lengthy process and incompatible with the urgency of the current pandemic state. The therapeutic strategies for COVID-19 recommended by WHO to date are based on drug repositioning. Although with limited success, these drugs, already marketed with indications for other diseases, have allowed some control of the progression of disease severity. As of 24 September 2021, WHO has published seven therapeutic recommendations against COVID-19, of which only three have been shown to have beneficial clinical effects in patients infected by SARS-CoV-2. The use of systemic corticosteroids, interleukin 6 receptor inhibitors (tocilizumab and sarilumab) and neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (casirivimab and imdevimab) showed to be effective options against the COVID-19 pandemic.
