Abstract

Crystalline coordination polymers with high electrical conductivities and charge carrier mobilities might open new opportunities for electronic devices. However, current solvent-based synthesis methods hinder compatibility with microfabrication standards. Here, we describe a solvent-free chemical vapor deposition method to prepare high-quality films of the two-dimensional conjugated coordination polymer Cu-BHT (BHT = benzenehexanothiolate). This approach involves the conversion of a metal oxide precursor into Cu-BHT nanofilms with a controllable thickness (20–85 nm) and low roughness (<10 nm) through exposure to the vaporized organic linker. Moreover, the restricted metal ion mobility during the vapor–solid reaction enables high-resolution patterning via both bottom-up lithography, including the fabrication of micron-sized Hall bar and electrode patterns to accurately evaluate the conductivity and mobility values of the Cu-BHT films.

Abstract

Background and aims: The association between adiposity measures and dyslipidemia has seldom been assessed in a multipopulational setting. Methods and results: 27 populations from Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada (WHO MONICA project) using health surveys conducted between 1990 and 1997 in adults aged 35-64 years (n = 40,480). Dyslipidemia was defined as the total/HDL cholesterol ratio >6 (men) and >5 (women).Overall prevalence of dyslipidemia was 25% in men and 23% in women. Logistic regression showed that dyslipidemia was strongly associated with body mass index (BMI) in men and with waist circumference (WC) in women, after adjusting for region, age and smoking. Among normal-weight men and women (BMI84.8 cm) in normal-weight men, menopause in women and regular smoking further defined subgroups at increased risk. Conclusion: standard categories of BMI and WC, or their combinations, do not lead to optimal risk stratification for dyslipidemia in middle-age adults. Sex-specific adaptations are necessary, in particular by taking into account abdominal obesity in normal-weight men, post-menopausal age in women and regular smoking in both sexes

Abstract

Bio-wastes containvaluable plant nutrients. After being fermented, the digestates can be used as fertilizers or soil amendments. In the current project VeNGA four products were developed on the basis of anaerobically digested and subsequently composted bio-waste. Compost was sieved (compost fine, product 1), and further treated by pelletizing (product 2) or agglomeration (product 3). From the fourth product impurities like plastic waste were sorted out by hand (compost hand-sorted).For the production and sale of fertilizers and soil amendments a price must be defined. First, the monetary value of the plant nutrients in the four products and the additional worth of the organic substance in form of Humus-Carbonwere evaluated.Secondly, the production costs for the four products were calculated on the basis of actual processing and composting costs and a field trial was conducted in which the four products were tested in comparison to standard mineral fertilization. The results show that the combination of pelletized or agglomeratedbiowaste digestates and mineral nitrogen fertilizer leads to higher yields and higher market performances than mineral fertilization alone. Abstract

The open-circuit voltage (VOC) of an organic solar cell is limited by the donor-acceptor material system. The effective gap E g eff between the electron affinity of the acceptor and the ionization potential of the donor is usually regarded as the upper limit for VOC, which is only reached for T → 0 K. This relation is confirmed for a number of small-molecule bulk heterojunction p-i-n type solar cells by varying the temperature and illumination intensity. With high precision, the low temperature limit of VOC is identical to E g eff. Furthermore, the influence of the hole transport material in a p-doped hole transport layer and the donor-acceptor mixing ratio on this limit V0 is found to be negligible. Varying the active material system, the quantitative relation between V0 and E g eff is found to be identity. A comparison of V 0 in a series of nine different donor-acceptor material combinations opens a pathway to quantitatively determine the ionization potential of a donor material or the electron affinity of an acceptor material. The effective gap of a photovoltaic donor-acceptor system equals the open-circuit voltage extrapolated to temperature zero. The extrapolation is independent of the illumination intensity, and material variations in the doped transport layers do not affect the measurement result. Abstract

Background and aims: The association between adiposity measures and dyslipidemia has seldom been assessed in a multipopulational setting. Methods and results: 27 populations from Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada (WHO MONICA project) using health surveys conducted between 1990 and 1997 in adults aged 35-64 years (n = 40,480). Dyslipidemia was defined as the total/HDL cholesterol ratio >6 (men) and >5 (women).Overall prevalence of dyslipidemia was 25% in men and 23% in women. Logistic regression showed that dyslipidemia was strongly associated with body mass index (BMI) in men and with waist circumference (WC) in women, after adjusting for region, age and smoking. Among normal-weight men and women (BMI<25 kg/m2), an increase in the odds for being dyslipidemic was observed between lowest and highest WC quartiles (OR = 3.6, p < 0.001). Among obese men (BMI ≥ 30), the corresponding increase was smaller (OR = 1.2, p = 0.036). A similar weakening was observed among women. Classification tree analysis was performed to assign subjects into classes of risk for dyslipidemia. BMI thresholds (25.4 and 29.2 kg/m2) in men and WC thresholds (81.7 and 92.6 cm) in women came out at first stages. High WC (>84.8 cm) in normal-weight men, menopause in women and regular smoking further defined subgroups at increased risk. Conclusion: standard categories of BMI and WC, or their combinations, do not lead to optimal risk stratification for dyslipidemia in middle-age adults. Sex-specific adaptations are necessary, in particular by taking into account abdominal obesity in normal-weight men, post-menopausal age in women and regular smoking in both sexes

Abstract

The maximum open-circuit voltage VOC of bulk-heterojunction solar cells is limited by the effective HOMO(donor)-LUMO(acceptor) gap of the photoactive absorber blend. We investigate blend layers comprising zinc-phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and the buckminster fullerene C60 with ultraviolet, x-ray, and inverse photoelectron spectroscopy. By varying the volume mixing ratio ZnPc:C60 from 6:1 to 1:6, we observe a linear increase of the HOMO(ZnPc)-LUMO(C60) gap by 0.25 eV. The trend in this gap correlates with the change in the charge transfer energy measured by Fourier-transform photocurrent spectroscopy as well as with the observed open-circuit voltage of solar cells containing ZnPc:C60 as the photoactive absorber layer. Furthermore, the morphology of different ZnPc:C60 blend layers is investigated by grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction. As physical origins for the changed energy levels, a suppressed crystallization of the C60 phase in the presence of donor molecules as well as concentration-dependent growth modes of the ZnPc phase are suggested. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Substituted diphenylamines can be synthesized by Pd(0)-catalyzed N-arylation using o-nitroanilines and nitro-substituted aryl bromides for a substrate. Cyclization of the diphenylamines by various methods, including the intramolecular Pd(0)-catalyzed N-arylation, produces 2-methoxyphenazine which can easily be deprotected to give 2-hydroxyphenazine. This phenazine is required to synthesize methanophenazine, a novel redoxactive cofactor isolated from methanogenic archaea.

38. NFkappaB mediates apoptosis through transcriptional activation of Fas (CD95) in adenoviral hepatitis.

Abstract

NFkappaB is an essential survival factor in several physiological conditions such as embryonal liver development and liver regeneration. However, NFkappaB is also a main mediator of the cellular response to a variety of extracellular stress stimuli, and it has been shown that some viral-induced host cell apoptosis appears to be dependent on NFkappaB activation. The activation of NFkappaB upon viral infection may be a rapid way of initiating an innate immune response against the viral particles. We have assessed the role of NFkB during the early phase of adenoviral hepatitis in a nude mouse model using an adenoviral vector expressing a mutant form of IkappaBalpha. Administration of a LacZ-expressing adenoviral vector induces NFkB DNA and correlates with the up-regulation of Fas (CD95) mRNA, but not FasL (CD95L) mRNA, during the early phase of adenoviral hepatitis. The rapid increase in NFkappaB DNA binding after adenoviral infection of the liver could be very effectively inhibited by IkappaBalpha. Compared with the LacZ control virus, the IkappaBalpha-expressing adenoviral vector inhibits the increase of Fas (CD95) mRNA expression, in particular in the very early phase of the hepatitis. Reporter gene experiments in hepatoma cell lines with a Fas promoter-luciferase construct indicated that the repression of Fas (CD95) mRNA by IkappaBalpha was transcriptionally mediated. The functional relevance of the NFkappaB-dependent increase in Fas (CD95) transcription was assessed by caspase 3 assays and terminal dUTP nick-end labeling tests. Compared with the control, IkappaBalpha adenoviral infection resulted in reduced caspase 3 activity during the early phase of viral hepatitis and in a prevention of liver cell apoptosis 24 h after adenoviral administration. Therefore our study demonstrates a new pro-apoptotic function of NFkappaB in Fas (CD95)-mediated apoptosis of hepatocytes. Interestingly, NFkappaB mediates liver cell apoptosis upon viral infection even in a phase where tumor necrosis factor-alpha is already induced, as shown by the time curves of tumor necrosis factor-alpha serum levels. Therefore, the pro- or anti-apoptotic role of NFkappaB appears to be more determined by the nature of the death stimulus than by the origin of the tissue.

Abstract

Radiation-induced morphea (RIM) is a rare complication of radiotherapy presenting as inflammatory fibrosis, most commonly reported in breast cancer patients. As underlying disease mechanisms are not well understood, targeted therapies are lacking. Since fibroblasts are the key mediators of all fibroproliferative diseases, this study aimed to characterize patient-derived fibroblasts to identify therapeutic targets. We studied primary human control and RIM-fibroblasts on a functional and molecular basis, analyzed peripheral blood and tissue samples and conducted, based on our findings, a treatment attempt in one patient. In RIM, we identified a distinct myofibroblast phenotype reflected by increased alpha-smooth-muscle-actin (αSMA) expression, reduced proliferation and migration rates, and overexpression of osteopontin (OPN). Our RNA sequencing identified aberrant Myc activation as a potential disease driver in RIM fibroblasts, similar to previous findings in systemic sclerosis. Treatment with the anti-inflammatory drug mesalazine reversed the myofibroblast phenotype by targeting Myc. Based on these findings, a patient with RIM was successfully treated with mesalazine, resulting in reduced inflammation and pain and tissue softening, while serum OPN was halved. The present study provides a comprehensive characterization of RIM fibroblasts, suggests a disease-driving role for Myc, demonstrates promising antifibrotic effects of mesalazine and proposes OPN as a biomarker for RIM., (© 2024. Abstract

Workforce well-being and associated factors such as burnout, depression and documentation burden, have been identified as the highest concerns to be addressed. In academia, the new essentials of nursing practice including domain 8 for informatics and healthcare technology have become a focus for curricular revisions/enhancements. Our study focused on technology skills by using the technology of an academic EHR to measure baselines and progression of EHR use, sense of confidence, documentation competency, and post-graduation employer-based performance assessment. We provide results of an ongoing 1.5-year study and overarching strategy for university-wide deployment and financing.

Abstract

Electronic health records (EHR) are designed to promote patient safety, workflow efficiency, and communication (HealthIT.gov). Competency in the use of an EHR is essential for both undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Masters prepared nurse educator students may become clinical faculty in schools of nursing or clinical nurse educators in hospitals or out-patient settings after graduation. A gap exists in preparing future nurse educators to teach EHR-specific skills to their future nursing student populations and in promoting patient safety through quality improvement initiatives. The purpose of this observational study is to evaluate experiential learning activities for Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) nurse educator students aimed at preparing them to teach EHR-specific skills to undergraduate nursing students and in utilizing an EHR query activity to develop quality improvement plans.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the necessity of equipping health professionals with knowledge and skills to effectively use digital technology for healthcare delivery. However, questions persist about the best approach to effectively educate future health professionals for this. A workshop at the 15th Nursing Informatics International Congress explored this issue., Objective: To report findings from an international participatory workshop exploring pre-registration informatics implementation experiences., Methods: A virtual workshop was held using whole and small group interactive methods aiming to 1) showcase international examples of incorporating health informatics into pre-registration education; 2) highlight essential elements and considerations for integrating health informatics into curricula; 3) identify integration models of health informatics; 4) identify core learning objectives, resources, and faculty capabilities for teaching informatics; and 5) propose curriculum evaluation strategies. The facilitators' recorded data and written notes were content analysed., Results: Fourteen participants represented seven countries and a range of educational experiences. Four themes emerged: 1) Design: scaffolding digital health and technology capabilities; 2) Development: interprofessional experience of and engagement with digital health technology capabilities; 3) implementation strategies; and 4) Evaluation: multifaceted, multi-stakeholder evaluation of curricula. These themes were used to propose an implementation framework., Discussion: Workshop findings emphasise global challenges in integrating health informatics into curricula. While course development approaches may appear linear, the learner-centred implementation framework based on workshop findings, advocates for a more cyclical approach. Iterative evaluation involving stakeholders, such as health services, will ensure that health professional education is progressive and innovative., Conclusions: The proposed implementation framework serves as a roadmap for successful health informatics implementation into health professional curricula. Prioritising engagement with health services and digital health industry is essential to ensure the relevance of implemented informatics curricula for the future workforce, acknowledging the variability in placement experiences and their influence on informatics exposure, experience, and learning.

With the passage of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act in 2009, Texas nurses were faced with the rapid uptake of technology driven by this legislation. Texas Nurses Association and Texas Organization for Nursing Leadership formed a partnership to collectively track the impact on practicing nurses. The Health IT Committee was commissioned to evaluate the changing health information technology environment and associated solutions. As such, a study in 2015, entitled "Statewide Study Assessing the Experiences of Nurses with their Electronic Health Records," was conducted. The follow-up study in 2020 was conducted to compare 2015 and 2020 findings to identify improvements made on nurses' satisfaction with EHRs and identify improvement opportunities. The study design was an exploratory descriptive comparative analysis with a cross-sectional survey from a random sample of Texas nurses for the two study periods of 2015 (n = 1177) and 2020 (n = 1117). The Clinical Information Systems Implementation Evaluation Scale and a demographic survey including the Meaningful Use Maturity-Sensitive Index were the measurement instruments.
