2. The Future of Marriage and Family Counseling from a Systems Perspective.

Abstract

One of marital and family therapy's key contributions to counseling is its use of systems theory; that is, studying a phenomenon in relation to its context. This paper addresses several contexts which will influence marriage and family counseling: (1) the future of psychotherapy; (2) marriage and family counseling's projected future; and (3) the vision of the future for professional counseling in general. Psychotherapy, states the author, must adapt itself to increasing pluralism in the field and in the population. New techniques are needed to adapt to increasing ethnicity, economic limitations, and more complex contexts. Marriage and family therapists in particular must integrate various theoretical positions as well as incorporate technical eclecticism so as to better involve reluctant family members. Increased interest in family involvement in therapy, proscribed therapeutic situations, and the reconciliation of opposites will all influence future therapy. For the future of professional counseling, licensure, program accreditation, psychoeducational approaches, the changing family, as well as other issues, will require therapists to adapt accordingly. Counselors of all types will become more involved in medical settings. The increasing importance of the family, along with its rising complexity, in therapeutic approaches will dictate more training for professionals to meet these new demands. Contains 30 references.) 5. Elementary School Students' Attitudes toward Student Achievement: A Focused Study on Social Ecological Variables

Abstract

The purpose of the quantitative survey design study was to examine key social ecological care variables that are related to the domains of neighborhood (neighbors who care), school (teachers who care, a fun place to learn, and a fun place to be with other children), friends (friends who care, accepted by other children, and friends have good behavior), and family (family who care) that could predict student achievement. The key social ecological care variables were predetermined by Natasha Bowen, the creator of the Elementary School Success Profile (ESSP). A group of students in third, fourth, and fifth grade were surveyed using the ESSP. The quantitative study took place in a school within the Southeastern part of the United States. The results from the survey were based on the responses of the 47-item survey. The analysis of the survey found that variables inside and outside of school have an effect on student achievement. 16. Collaborating Careers: The Differential Effects of Race

Male and female black undergraduates responded to five stories about married black physicians. Results are compared with a study of predominantly white students. Black females favored maternal child care even when this reduced the family income. Results are discussed relevant to collaborating career patterns among middle-class black families. (Author)

17. Prevention/Intervention with Healthy Black Families.

Abstract

The first article in this paper reviews research on healthy black families and explores definitions of health. The strengths of black families such as kinship/social support, valuing education, achievement and parity in interpersonal relationships, the black church, and egalitarian roles in black families are discussed. Recommendations are made for therapists working with black clients. The second article deals with enhancing black family processes. Socioeconomic status and values are discussed in regard to intervention strategies. Rapport building and establishing trust on the part of the therapist are addressed, with suggestions regarding teams for effective co-therapy. Techniques and strategies for psychological intervention are explored. (LLL)
