This article examines the life of the scholar Abraham Ankawa (1810-90) in order to argue for the usefulness of a Mediterranean lens through which to view the history of Jews in modern North Africa. Ankawa's networks spanned various Maghribi states, especially Morocco (his birthplace and the focus of much of his scholarship) and Algeria (where he made his career as a rabbi), extending east to Jerusalem and north to Livorno and France. The fundamentally transimperial nature of his personal and professional ties cannot be explained through the national historiographies of Morocco or Algeria, the most typical categories assigned to Maghribi Jews like him. Nor were his diverse networks based only on his Sephardi identity. Understanding Ankawa's trajectory through a Mediterranean lens offers a window onto the process of Mediterranean modernization as an encounter between older, transregional forms of connectivity and the new political and legal institutions of European colonialism. The author begins by observing that he has often been described as an analytical Thomist. He proceeds to argue that--regardless of what school one belongs to--genuine philosophical engagement with Aquinas's texts means one should be both reverent and critical. If we are to consider the relevance of Aquinas's thought for contemporary philosophy, the author suggests, the best way for us to write about Aquinas is the way in which he wrote about Aristotle: stating his views as clearly and sympathetically as possible, showing their connection with current concerns, and contesting them politely but firmly if they appear to be erroneous.

The theologian Paul Lehmann, long associated with Union Theological Seminary in New York, emphasized the dynamic activity and freedom of God. He often expressed an appreciation of divine providence in a way that affirmed trust without being rigid. His writing was difficult to understand, as he exhibited an impressive depth of learning as well as a playful use of language. His books include 'Forgiveness: Decisive Issue in Protestant Thought,' 'Ethics in a Christian Context,' 'The Transfiguration of Politics,' and 'The Decalogue and a Human Future.'

Stories tended to gather around the figure of Paul Tillich when he was teaching at Union Seminary in New York during the 1950s and in subsequent encounters. Tillich was a spellbinding teacher, influential as an apologetic theologian who propounded a version of 'crisis theology.' Many of the stories involve his heavily German-accented English. Tillich's views on art and his appreciation of sunsets are also discussed.

My primary relation to Barbour's work is that of indebtedness and appreciation. He has reassured me that despite the vast changes in physics, the Whiteheadian perspective that has been so important to me as a Christian believer provides a valid way of understanding the physical world. If there is a difference between us, it is my greater emphasis on perspective and on the challenge of the Whiteheadian perspective to the ones that now dominate the sciences. The late Hugh Thomson Kerr, Jr was a respected theologian and first-rate editor for many years of Theology Today. His demanding editorial standards kept the journal at a high intellectual level. As a theologian, Kerr relished keeping students informed about the work of his eminent colleagues. Kerr also realized the importance of music and art to religion. Above all, his belief in the power of God's grace will endure as his legacy.

Reinhold Niebuhr and John C. Bennett, two theologians who contributed significantly to the early years of 'Christianity and Crisis,' were both born in June. Niebuhr was born on Jun 21, 1892 and Bennett on Jun 22, 1902. A selection of quotations from Niebuhr's writings show the incisiveness of his commentary on Christianity and society, while the John Bennett Fund has been created to commemorate his advocacy of Christian ethics.
