Cotinus coggygria Scop. is a valuable medicinal plant species with pronounced pharmacological potential due to its numerous biological activities. The herb is characterized by a high content of polyphenols among which is fustin. The anticancer activities of fustin, however, are extremely weakly studied. The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro antiproliferative potential of fustin isolated from the heartwood of C. coggygria against cell lines originating from two of the most common cancer types – breast (MDA-MB-231 and MCF7), and colon cancer (Colon 26).

The chemical composition of Rhodobryum ontariense (Kindb.) Kindb. has not been previously investigated. Fatty acids of this moss were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively with an aim to identify its corresponding pattern. A total of eight fatty acids were identified including two acetylenic ones: 9,12,15-octadecatrien-6-ynoic acid (42.26%), α-linolenic acid (20.32%), palmitic acid (14.31%), 9,12-octadecadienoic-6-ynoic acid (13.31%), linoleic acid (5.25%), oleic acid (2.47%), stearic acid (1.14%) and γ-linolenic acid (0.92%). To our knowledge, this is the first record of acetylenic fatty acids in the genus Rhodobryum. In general, acetylenic fatty acids vary considerably among different moss groups and have been used as a chemotaxonomic character in bryophyte classifications. Other species of Rhodobryum from Asia have been traditionally used in ethno medicine by indigenous cultures. Two fatty acids of those reported here, 9,12,15-octadecatrien-6-ynoic and α-linolenic acid, have known cardio protective activity, which supports respective claims of traditional herbal use of these mosses. The aim of the present work was to investigate some of the molecular mechanisms and targets of the anticancer action of the bioflavonoid fustin isolated from the heartwood of Cotinus coggygria Scop. in the triple-negative breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231. For this purpose, we applied fluorescence microscopy analysis to evaluate apoptosis, necrosis, and mitochondrial integrity, wound healing assay to study fustin antimigratory potential and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction to analyze the expression of genes associated with cell cycle control, programmed cell death, metastasis, and epigenetic alterations. A complex network-based bioinformatic analysis was also employed for protein-protein network construction, hub genes identification, and functional enrichment. The results revealed a significant induction of early and late apoptotic and necrotic events, a slight alteration of the mitochondria-related fluorescence, and marked antimotility effect after fustin treatment. Of 34 analyzed genes, seven fustin targets were identified, of which CDKN1A , ATM , and MYC were significantly enriched in pathways such as cell cycle, intrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway in response to DNA damage and generic transcription pathway. Bisbibenzyls are specialized metabolites found exclusively in liverworts, until recently; they represent chemical markers of liverworts. Their occurrence in vascular plants was noticed in 2007, when they were found in Primula veris subsp. macrocalyx from Russia. This report prompted us to chemically analyze the two most common Serbian Primula species, P. veris subsp. columnae and P. acaulis, in order to determine the presence of bisbibenzyls in them. Our study revealed nine structurally distinct bisbibenzyls (1-9), identified based on 1D and 2D NMR, IR, UV and HRESIMS data. Among them were five previously undescribed compounds (2-6). The remaining compounds found and previously described in the literature were: the bisbibenzyls riccardin C (1), isoperrottetin A (7), isoplagiochin E (8) and 11-O-demethylmarchantin I (9), as well as 4-hydroxyphenylmethylketone (10) and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylmethylketone (11). Riccardin C was the most dominant bisbibenzyl in both species studied. Previously, it was the first bisbibenzyl found in vascular plants (P. veris subsp. macrocalyx). An assessment of the cytotoxic activity of the isolated compounds against A549 lung cancer and healthy MRC5 cell lines was also the subject of our study. Nuts and seeds are an indispensable part of the plant-based diet, which is becoming increasingly popular due to the evidence of their health benefits and contribution to sustainability and planetary health. Since the health effects of consuming nuts and seeds directly depend on their nutritional composition and consumed amount, it is essential to know the exact chemical composition of each nut and seed so that appropriate dietary interventions can be adequately planned. The present study aimed to examine the chemical composition of nuts and seeds obtained from the Serbian market and to highlight the similarities and differences in their nutritional composition. In twenty-four samples of nuts and seeds, the content of total lipids, including fatty acid profile, total proteins, including amino acid profile, total carbohydrates (sugars and fibers), phytosterols, and minerals were determined. Content of selected nutrients in grams (g) or milligrams (mg) of nuts and seeds was expressed in one portion (28 g) and as a percentage of contribution of Reference Intakes (% RI) and Dietary Reference Value (% DRV) for macronutrients and minerals, respectively. Some of the seed representatives appeared to be rich sources of essential omega-3 fatty acid, α-linolenic acid (ALA) (flax seed vs . walnut, 6.50 vs . 0.56 g per portion, respectively), dietary fibers (chia seed vs. raw almond, 10.6 vs. 3.4 g per portion, respectively), calcium (black sesame seed vs . almond roasted, 32.4% NRV vs . 8.1% NRV per portion, respectively), magnesium (hemp seed vs. Brazil nut, 38.3% NRV vs . 27.8% NRV per portion, respectively), and zinc (hemp seed vs. pine nut, 21.4% NRV vs. 17.6% NRV per portion, respectively). Our results highlighted the crucial role of seeds in the diet, especially as a better source of nutrients compared to nuts. Furthermore, it was seen that nuts and seeds are different and complementary in their composition. New aurone epoxide, 2,10-oxy-10-methoxysulfuretin ( 14 ), and new auronolignan ( 15 ), named cotinignan A, were isolated by silica gel column and semipreparative HPLC chromatography from the methylene chloride/methanol extract of Cotinus coggygria Scop. heartwood. In addition, thirteen known secondary metabolites namely sulfuretin, 2,3- trans -fustin, fisetin, butin, butein, taxifolin, eriodictyol, 3',5,5',7-tetrahydroxyflavanone, 3',4',7-trihydroxyflavone, 3- O -methyl-2,3- trans -fustin, 3- O -galloyl-2,3- trans -fustin, β -resorcylic acid and 3- O - β -sitosterol glucoside were isolated as well. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR, HR-ESI-MS, IR and UV. Ten out of eleven isolated flavonoids possess 7, 3' and 4' hydroxy groups. These structural features could be considered as chemotaxonomic characteristic of flavonoids from C. coggygria . Cotinignan A ( 15 ) represents new subclass of secondary metabolites - auronolignans.

Seven new bisbibenzyls (1-7) were isolated from the methanol extract of the liverwort Lunularia cruciata along with one previously known bibenzyl and five known bisbibenzyls. The structures of compounds 1-7 were elucidated on the basis of the spectroscopic data. These newly isolated bisbibenzyls may be divided into two groups, the acyclic bisbibenzyls, perrottetins (1-3), and the cyclic analogues, riccardins (4-7). Besides standard perrottetin and riccardin structures (1 and 4, respectively), they contain phenanthrene (3 and 5), dihydrophenanthrene (2), and quinone moieties (6 and 7), rarely found in natural products. The new compounds 3 and 5, as well as the known riccardin G, exhibited cytotoxic activity against the A549 lung cancer cell line with IC 50 values of 5.0, 5.0, and 2.5 μM, respectively.

The essential oil of Thymus algeriensis was analyzed as a potential preservative in soft cheese. We developed a novel method to test the preserving properties of essential oil in soft cheese. Contamination incidence of Penicillium aurantiogriseum was absent after 30 d of storage at 4°C with 25 µL of essential oil added. The antimicrobial activity was tested against 8 bacteria and 8 fungi. Thymus algeriensis oil showed inhibitory activity against tested bacteria at 0.03 to 0.09 mg/mL, and bactericidal activity was achieved at 0.05 to 0.15 mg/mL. For antifungal activity, minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged between 0.01 and 0.04 mg/mL and minimum fungicidal concentrations between 0.01 and 0.04 mg/mL. Furthermore, the oil was also screened for antiradical activity using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assay. The results showed that the oil was active and achieved half-maximal inhibitory activity at 0.132 mg/mL. We used gas chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry to investigate the volatile compounds from the oil. Carvacrol was identified as the main compound in the oil, represented by 80.9% of the total constituents, followed by p-cymene (7.7%)., (Copyright © 2018 American Dairy Science Association. Seven derivatives of pentacyclic triterpene acids (1-7) were isolated from the bark of Alnus viridis ssp. viridis using a combination of column chromatography and semipreparative HPLC. Compounds 1-3, 6, and 7 were determined to be new after spectroscopic data interpretation and were assigned as 27-hydroxyalphitolic acid derivatives (1-3), a 27-hydroxybetulinic acid derivative (6), and a 3-epi-maslinic acid derivative (7), respectively. Pentacyclic triterpenoids with a C-27 hydroxymethyl group have been found in species of the genus Alnus for the first time. These compounds were subjected to cytotoxicity testing against a number of cancer cell lines. Also, selected pentacyclic triterpenoids were selected as potential inhibitors of topoisomerases I and IIα for an in silico investigation.

This work aimed to evaluate the content of selected phenolic natural products in the wine samples made of three new Serbian Cabernet Franc clones (Nos. 02, 010 and 012, respectively) and mother vine (used as the relevant standard) during the period 2008-2012. Compared with all other wine samples, the Cabernet Franc wine of the clone No. 010 was found to have the highest total content of polyphenolics (1.85 ± 0.02 g/L) and anthocyanins (178.55 ± 3.75 mg/L). In addition, its Folin-Ciocalteu index (36.86 ± 0.12) stood out among the examined samples. Finally, the same wine was enriched with ellagic and gallic acids (3.44 ± 0.29 and 27.46 ± 0.21 mg/L, respectively), catechin (135.16 ± 6.47 mg/L) and epicatechin (51.33 ± 2.33 mg/L), the natural products known to exert significant lipid-lowering effects. Taken all together, the clone No. 010 developed in Serbia may offer new Cabernet Franc wine with geographical indication.

This work aimed to evaluate the total contents of polyphenolics (the Ribereau-Gayon-Maurié procedure), anthocyanins (using pH differential method) and tannins (the Nègre procedure) as well as the content of phenolic acids (using UPLC/MS chromatography), respectively of the wines obtained from three new Merlot clone candidates in the perennial clonal selection. The aforementioned chemical parameters were determined in the samples covering the period 2009-2012. In comparison both with the standard Merlot wine (mother vine) and the wines obtained from other two clone candidates, the Merlot wine of the clone candidate No. 022 was found to have the highest total content of all three examined components 1.89 ± 0.05 g/L (polyphenolics), 185.59 ± 5.00 mg/L (anthocyanins) and 1.11 ± 0.03 g/L (tannins), as well as six phenolic acids including gallic acid (25.49 ± 0.27 mg/L). These findings are in good agreement with the observed trend for the viticultural parameters indicating the clone candidate No. 022 as more promising than mother.

Two volatile samples of the bryozoan Hyalinella punctata (seasonally collected from the same locality) were isolated (hydrodistillation, Clevenger apparatus), identified (GC and GC-MS) and screened in vitro (EPR) for anti-hydroxyl radical activity. The main components of sample 1 (2-ethyl-1-hexanol 37.00%, dodecanol 21.40% and hexanal 8.40%) and sample 2 (2-ethyl-1-hexanol 30.50%, 7-tridecanol 24.60% and 1-hexadecanol 11.80%) were relatively similar. However, more components were present in the sample 2 (17 and 25, respectively). EPR measurements indicated significant anti-hydroxyl radical activity of the both samples (75.00 ± 6.00% and 87.00 ± 8.00%, respectively) whereas the generation of other types of free radicals in reaction with hydroxyl radicals was not observed. According to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of 31 organic compounds from the phylum Bryozoa. Alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters and ethers of lower molecular mass appear to be characteristic for the volatiles of these organisms commonly known as moss animals.

The phytochemical investigation conducted on a foliose lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria(L.) Hoffm. (Lobariaceae), led to the isolation of a new depsidone in the form of its diacetate derivative which showed a moderate acetylcholinesterase inhibition activity (1 µg) in vitro. This is the first record of identified depsidone structure in searching for these inhibitors.

As part of our ongoing project of new acetylcholinesterase inhibitors from lower marine and terrestrial species, a phytochemical investigation was conducted on a foliose lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. (Lobariaceae), from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The study led to the isolation of a mixture of acetylated depsidones which showed a moderate activity (0.5 µg) in the acetylcholinesterase inhibition test on Thin-layer chromatography plate. Our results indicate for the first time the significance of depsidones, highly specific metabolites from lichen species, in searching for these inhibitors which still represent the best drugs currently available for the management of Alzheimer's disease.

Although the second biggest terrestrial group of plants, bryophytes remain poorly known chemically compared to the angiosperms. In this article, the sugars of the moss Rhodobryum ontariense, an unstudied representative of the medicinally known genus, are reported. The chemical analysis revealed the usual plant sugar sucrose, and a new sugar, fructooligosaccharide 1-kestose, which is reported first not only for the genus Rhodobryum, but also for mosses. The trisaccharides have been scantily reported in bryophytes hitherto. This gives more significance to this study for further investigation of its role in the moss species. The health-promoting effect of 1-kestose is also briefly discussed.

A new allose-containing triterpenoid saponin (1), along with a known saponin (2), were isolated from the aerial parts of Cephalaria ambrosioides. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic (2D-NMR and ESI-MS) methods. The preferred conformation of 1 was determined by the NOESY spectrum.

Reactions of commercial fluorous alkyl iodides RfnI (1-Rfn; Rfn = CF3(CF2)(n-1); n = 7, 8, 10, 12) with 80% H2O2 and trifluoroacetic anhydride give RfnI(OCOCF3)2 (2-Rfn; 97-89%). These efficiently oxidize aliphatic and benzylic secondary alcohols to the corresponding ketones (92-57%) in the presence of aqueous KBr and absence of organic or fluorous solvents. Bromide ion activates the reagents and/or generates a relay oxidant such as a functional equivalent of Br+. Oxidations are much more rapid (<30 min, 2-R(f8); <70 min, 2-R(f10)) than with other iodine(III) compounds under similar conditions. The coproducts 1-Rfn can be recovered by adding 3-5 volumes of methanol to the reaction mixtures. Fluorous/methanolic liquid/liquid (1-R(f8)) or solid/liquid (1-R(f10)) biphase systems result. The recovered 1-Rfn can be reoxidized to 2-Rfn and reused. Three cycles are conducted with 1-phenyl-1-propanol and 2-R(f10). The propiophenone yields range from 92% to 83% per cycle, and after the final cycle 59-57% of the original charge of the fluorous iodide species is recovered.

Reactions of the diphosphine 1,3-C6H4(CH2PH2)2 and fluorous alkenes H2C=CHR(fn)(R(fn)=(CF2)(n-1)CF3; n = 6, 8) at 75 degrees C in the presence of AIBN give the title ligands 1,3-C6H4(CH2P(CH2CH2R(fn))2)2(3-R(fn)) and byproducts 1,3-C6H4(CH3)(CH2P(CH2CH2R(fn))2)(4-R(fn)) in 1 : 3 to 1 : 5 ratios. Workups give -R(fn) in 4--17% yields. Similar results are obtained photochemically. Reaction of 1,3-C6H4(CH2Br)2 and HP(CH2CH2R(f8))2 (5) at 80 degrees C (neat, 1 : 2 mol ratio) gives instead of simple substitution the metacyclophane [1,3-C6H4(CH2P(CH2CH2R(f8))2 CH2-1,3-C(6)H(4)CH(2)P[lower bond 1 end](CH2CH2R(f8))2C[upper bond 1 end]H2](2+)2Br-, which upon treatment with LiAlH(4) yields 3-R(f8)(20%), 4-R(f8), and other products. Efforts to better access 3-R(f8), either by altering stoichiometry or using various combinations of the phosphine borane (H3B)PH(CH2CH2R(f8))2 and base, are unsuccessful. Reactions of 3-R(fn) with Pd(O2CCF3)2 and [IrCl(COE)2]2(COE=cyclooctene) give the palladium and iridium pincer complexes (2,6,1-C6H3(CH2 P(CH2CH2R(fn))(2)(2)Pd(O2CCF3)(10-R(fn); 80-90%) and (2,6,1-C6H3(CH2P(CH2CH2R(f8))2)2)Ir(Cl)(H)(11-R(f8); 29%), which exhibit CF3C6F(11)/toluene partition coefficients of >96 : <4. The crystal structure of 10-R(f8) shows CH2CH2R(f8) groups with all-anti conformations that extend in parallel above and below the palladium square plane to create fluorous lattice domains. NMR monitoring shows a precursor to 11-R(f8) that is believed to be a COE adduct.
