Extratropical cyclones play a major role in the atmospheric circulation and weather variability and can cause widespread damage and destruction. Extratropical cyclones in northern Europe, which is located at the end of the North Atlantic storm track, have been less studied than extratropical cyclones elsewhere. Our study investigates extratropical cyclones and windstorms in northern Europe (which in this study covers Norway; Sweden; Finland; Estonia; and parts of the Baltic, Norwegian, and Barents seas) by analysing their characteristics, spatial and temporal evolution, and precursors. We examine cold and warm seasons separately to determine seasonal differences. We track all extratropical cyclones in northern Europe, create cyclone composites, and use an ensemble sensitivity method to analyse the precursors. The ensemble sensitivity analysis is a novel method in cyclone studies where linear regression is used to statistically identify what variables possibly influence the subsequent evolution of extratropical cyclones. We investigate windstorm precursors for both the minimum mean sea level pressure (MSLP) and for the maximum 10 m wind gusts. The annual number of extratropical cyclones and windstorms has a large inter-annual variability and no significant linear trends during 1980–2019. Windstorms originate and occur over the Barents and Norwegian seas, whereas weaker extratropical cyclones originate and occur over land areas in northern Europe. During the windstorm evolution, the maximum wind gusts move from the warm sector to behind the cold front following the strongest pressure gradient. Windstorms in both seasons are located on the poleward side of the jet stream. The maximum wind gusts occur nearly at the same time as the minimum MSLP occurs. The cold-season windstorms have higher sensitivities and thus are potentially better predictable than warm-season windstorms, and the minimum MSLP has higher sensitivities than the maximum wind gusts. Of the four examined precursors, both the minimum MSLP and the maximum wind gusts are the most sensitive to the 850 hPa potential temperature anomaly, i.e. the temperature gradient. Hence, this parameter is likely important when predicting windstorms in northern Europe.

Within a meteorological capacity building project in Vietnam, lightning location data and manual (human-observed) thunderstorm day observations were analyzed for the period 2015–2019. The lightning location dataset, based on the global lightning detection system Vaisala GLD360, consists of a total of 315,522,761 lightning strokes. The results indicate that, on average, 6.9 million lightning flashes per year occur in the land areas of Vietnam; this equals a lightning flash density of 20 flashes km−2 yr−1. The largest average annual flash density values occur in three regions in North, Central and South Vietnam. The majority of lightning occurs in the monsoon season (April–September), peaking in May, while in October–March, the lightning activity is very modest. During individual intense thunderstorm days, the flash density may exceed 12 flashes km−2 day−1. Thunderstorms in Central Vietnam are generally more intense, i.e., more lightning is expected on average per one thunderstorm day in Central Vietnam than in other regions. This study is a continuation of several years of meteorological capacity building in Vietnam, and the results suggest that large socio-economic benefits can be received by understanding the local thunderstorm climatology in high detail, especially in a country such as Vietnam, where lightning causes substantial socio-economic losses annually.

Windstorms are natural disturbance agents in forests playing a role in natural forest regeneration. In Finland, the most severe individual windstorms have commonly damaged 2–4 million m3 of timber. In addition to financial losses caused to forest owners, windthrown trees have in many cases seriously disrupted the functionality of the national power grid. Communicating windstorm risks in duty forecasting is difficult. In this study, we aimed at developing windstorm impact estimates for forest damage in Finland to help the forecaster to improve communication of the risks of windstorms. We have compared the volume of forest damage caused by the most intense windstorms in Finland during the recent decade to the observed maximum inland wind gust speeds associated with the same windstorms. It was found out that the volume of forest damage follows approximately a power relation as a function of wind gust speed with a power of ∼10. This is a tentative estimate because of a short time series and small number of inspected windstorms. Moreover, also wind direction, location of the affected area and soil properties among other factors have an impact to the amount of damage as illustrated in our inspection. Despite the shortness of the time series, we believe that our results demonstrating the steep increase in the impacts of windstorms with an increasing windstorm intensity are valuable. However, more detailed investigations with longer time series are needed in order to more specifically communicate the windstorm risks and their impacts in boreal forests.

The knowledge of long-term climate and variability of near-surface wind speeds is essential and widely used among meteorologists, climate scientists and in industries such as wind energy and forestry. The new high-resolution ERA5 reanalysis from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) will likely be used as a reference in future climate projections and in many wind-related applications. Hence, it is important to know what is the mean climate and variability of wind speeds in ERA5.We present the monthly 10-m wind speed climate and decadal variability in the North Atlantic and Europe during the 40-year period (1979-2018) based on ERA5. In addition, we examine temporal time series and possible trends in three locations: the central North Atlantic, Finland and Iberian Peninsula. Moreover, we investigate what are the physical reasons for the decadal changes in 10-m wind speeds.The 40-year mean and the 98th percentile wind speeds show a distinct contrast between land and sea with the strongest winds over the ocean and a seasonal variation with the strongest winds during winter time. The winds have the highest values and variabilities associated with storm tracks and local wind phenomena such as the mistral. To investigate the extremeness of the winds, we defined an extreme find factor (EWF) which is the ratio between the 98th percentile and mean wind speeds. The EWF is higher in southern Europe than in northern Europe during all months. Mostly no statistically significant linear trends of 10-m wind speeds were found in the 40-year period in the three locations and the annual and decadal variability was large.The windiest decade in northern Europe was the 1990s and in southern Europe the 1980s and 2010s. The decadal changes in 10-m wind speeds were largely explained by the position of the jet stream and storm tracks and the strength of the north-south pressure gradient over the North Atlantic. In addition, we investigated the correlation between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO) in the three locations. The NAO has a positive correlation in the central North Atlantic and Finland and a negative correlation in Iberian Peninsula. The AMO correlates moderately with the winds in the central North Atlantic but no correlation was found in Finland or the Iberian Peninsula. Overall, our study highlights that rather than just using long-term linear trends in wind speeds it is more informative to consider inter-annual or decadal variability.

An online survey was used to map the needs and preferences of the Finnish general public concerning extended-range forecasts and their presentation. First analyses of the survey were used to guide the co-design process of novel extended-range forecasts to be developed and tested during the project. In addition, the survey was used to engage the respondents from the general public to participate in a one year piloting phase that started in June 2017. The respondents considered that the tailored extended-range forecasts would be beneficial in planning activities, preparing for the weather risks and scheduling the everyday life. The respondents also perceived the information about the impacts of weather conditions more important than advice on how to prepare for the impacts.

We analyse changes in meteotsunami occurrence over the past century (1922–2014) in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea. A major challenge for studying these short-lived and local events is the limited temporal and spatial resolution of digital sea level and meteorological data. To overcome this challenge, we examine archived paper recordings from two tide gauges, Hanko for 1922–1989 and Hamina for 1928–1989, from the summer months of May–October. We visually inspect the recordings to detect rapid sea level variations, which are then digitised and compared to air pressure observations from nearby stations. The data set is complemented with events detected from digital sea level data 1990–2014 by an automated algorithm. In total, we identify 121 potential meteotsunami events. Over 70 % of the events could be confirmed to have a rapid change in air pressure occurring shortly before or simultaneously with the sea level oscillations. The occurrence of meteotsunamis is strongly connected with lightning over the region: the number of cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes over the Gulf of Finland were on average over 10 times higher during the days when a meteotsunami was recorded compared to days with no meteotsunamis in May–October. On a monthly level, statistically significant differences between meteotsunami months and other months were found in the number of CG flashes, convective available potential energy (CAPE), and temperature. Meteotsunami occurrence over the past century shows a statistically significant increasing trend in Hamina, but not in Hanko.

On 22 September 1982, an intense windstorm caused considerable damage in northern Finland. Local forecasters noted that this windstorm potentially was related to Hurricane Debby, a category 4 hurricane that occurred just 5 days earlier. Due to the unique nature of the event and lack of prior research, our aim is to document the synoptic sequence of events related to this storm using ERA-Interim reanalysis data, best track data, and output from OpenIFS simulations. During extratropical transition, the outflow from Debby resulted in a ridge building and an acceleration of the jet. Debby did not reintensify immediately in the midlatitudes despite the presence of an upper-level trough. Instead, ex-Debby propagated rapidly across the Atlantic as a diabatic Rossby wave–like feature. Simultaneously, an upper-level trough approached from the northeast and once ex-Debby moved ahead of this feature near the United Kingdom, rapid reintensification began. All OpenIFS forecasts diverged from reanalysis after only 2 days indicating intrinsic low predictability and strong sensitivities. Phasing between Hurricane Debby and the weak trough, and phasing of the upper- and lower-level potential vorticity anomalies near the United Kingdom was important in the evolution of ex-Debby. In the only OpenIFS simulation to correctly capture the phasing over the United Kingdom, stronger wind gusts were simulated over northern Finland than in any other simulation. Turbulent mixing behind the cold front, and convectively driven downdrafts in the warm sector, enhanced the wind gusts over Finland. To further improve understanding of this case, we suggest conducting research using an ensemble approach.

A three-wavelength angular-scanning surface plasmon resonance based analysis has been utilized for characterizing optical properties of organic nanometer-thick layers with a wide range of thicknesses. The thickness and refractive index were determined for sample layers with thicknesses ranging from subnanometer to hundreds of nanometers. The analysis approach allows for simultaneous determination of both the refractive index and thickness without prior knowledge of either the refractive index or the thickness of the sample layers and without the help of other instruments, as opposed to current methods and approaches for characterizing optical properties of organic nanometer-thick layers. The applicability of the three-wavelength angular-scanning surface plasmon resonance approach for characterizing thin and thick organic layers was demonstrated by ex situ deposited mono- and multilayers of stearic acid and hydrogenated soy phosphatidylcholine and in situ layer-by-layer deposition of two different polyelectrolyte multilayer systems. In addition to the three-wavelength angular-scanning surface plasmon resonance approach, another surface plasmon resonance optical phenomenon, i.e., the surface plasmon resonance waveguide mode, was utilized to characterize organic sample layers whose thicknesses border the micrometer scale. This was demonstrated by characterizing both in situ layer-by-layer deposited polyelectrolyte multilayer systems and an ex situ deposited spin-coated polymer layer.

We measured volatile organic compounds (VOC), carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) at an urban background site near the city centre of Helsinki, Finland, Northern Europe. The VOC and CO2 measurements were obtained between January 2013 and September 2014 whereas for CO a shorter measurement campaign in April–May 2014 was conducted. Both anthropogenic and biogenic sources were identified for VOCs in the study. Strong correlations between VOC fluxes and CO fluxes and traffic rates indicated anthropogenic source of many VOCs. The VOC with highest emission to the atmosphere was methanol which originated mostly from traffic and other anthropogenic sources. Traffic was also a major source for aromatic compounds in all seasons whereas isoprene was mostly emitted from biogenic sources during summer. Small traffic related isoprene emissions were detected during other seasons. Generally, the VOC fluxes were found to be small compared with previous urban VOC flux studies. However, the differences were probably caused by lower anthropogenic activities as the CO2 fluxes were also relatively small at the site.

Northern peatlands cover approximately 4% of the global land surface area. Those peatlands will be particularly vulnerable to environmental and climate change and therefore it is important to investigate their total greenhouse gas (GHG) budgets, to determine the feedback on the climate. Nitrogen (N) is known to influence the GHG budget in particular by affecting the methane (CH(4)) balance. At two peatland sites in Scotland and Finland GHG fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO(2)), methane and nitrous oxide (N(2)O) and nitrogen fluxes were measured as part of the European project 'NitroEurope'. The Scottish site, Auchencorth Moss, was a GHG sink of -321, -490 and -321 g CO(2) eq m(-2) year(-1) in 2006, 2007 and 2008, respectively, with CO(2) as the dominating GHG. In contrast, the dominating GHG at the Finnish site, Lompolojankka, was CH(4), resulting in the site being a net GHG source of +485 and +431 g CO(2) eq m(-2) year(-1) in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Therefore. Auchencorth Moss had a negative global warming potential (GWP) whilst Lompolojankka had a positive GWP over the investigated time period. Initial results yielded a positive N budget for Lompolojankka of 7.1 kg N ha(-1) year(-1), meaning the site was gaining nitrogen, and a negative N budget for Auchencorth Moss of -2.4 kg N ha year(-1), meaning the site was losing nitrogen.

Atmospheric hydrogen (H2) mixing ratios were observed over a one year period from summer 2007 to 2008 in Helsinki, Finland. Relatively stable background values of hydrogen were occasionally observed at the site, with minimum in October and maximum between March and May. High hydrogen mixing ratios occurred simultaneously with high carbon monoxide (CO) values and coincided with high traffic flow periods. Carbon monoxide and radon (222Rn) were continuously monitored at the same site and they were used in estimation of the hydrogen emissions from traffic. The morning rush hour slope of ΔH2/ΔCO was in average 0.43±0.03 ppb (H2)/ppb (CO). After correction due to soil deposition of H2 the slope was 0.49±0.07 ppb (H2)/ppb (CO). Using this slope and CO emission statistics, a road traffic emission of about 260 t (H2)/year was estimated for Helsinki in 2007.

Ambient air concentrations of benzene were both measured and predicted in the Helsinki Metropolitan area. Two-weekly measurements were conducted in 2000, 2002 and 2003 at seven measurement stations using diffusive adsorbent sampling; additional two-hourly measurements were also performed. An urban dispersion modelling system was utilised for modelling the spatial concentration distributions of benzene for 2000. According to both measurements and predictions, the annual mean benzene concentrations were below the upper assessment threshold (3.5 μg m−3) set by the European Union, while the lower assessment threshold (2 μg m−3) was exceeded at one urban station (Toolo) during the year 2000. The concentrations measured in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area were also compared with those at rural and remote stations in Finland. In the winters of 2000 and 2003, the concentrations at the remote and rural stations of Uto, Hyytiala and Pallas were close to the concentrations at the urban background station of Kallio, while in the summers of 2000 and 2003, the concentrations at Kallio were substantially higher. The predicted concentrations in 2000 were highest in the vicinity of major roads and streets, and at their junctions. At all the stations, the predicted yearly averaged concentrations agreed fairly well with the measured data; the differences between measured and predicted values ranged from 10 to 31%. According to the measurements, and also the emission and dispersion computations, the most important source categories were exhaust emissions from local vehicular traffic, and the long-range transported background.

Biogenic volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations in ambient air were measured in Central Finland from April 2000 to April 2002. The concentrations of isoprene increased in May and declined in September, but the concentrations of its oxidation products, methacrolein and methyl vinyl ketone, remained at about 100 ppt level also after that suggesting they might have anthropogenic sources as well. The winter and summer mean midday concentrations of monoterpenes were 97 and 250 pptv, respectively. The winter concentrations of monoterpenes were unexpectedly high, but they can be explained by small, but existing, emissions from at least Picea abies and also by the much longer atmospheric lifetime of monoterpenes in winter than in summer. The hydroxyl and nitrate radical concentrations in Central Finland were calculated for the year 2000 using an observationally constrained photochemical box model. Using the calculated hydroxyl radical concentrations the atmospheric lifetime of α -pinene with respect to the OH reaction was estimated to be 50 times longer in December than in July. The nitrate and ozone reactions extend the atmospheric lifetime of α -pinene to 3–4 fold in winter in comparison with the summer lifetime. The mean afternoon (12–4 p.m.) emission potentials (at 30°C according to Guenther et al., J. Geophys. Res. 98 (1993) 12609) were 0.4, 0.2, 1.4, 0.7, 0.4, and 0.2 μg g −1 dry weight h −1 in January, April, May, June, July, and October, respectively. In summer the VOC emissions also included isoprene and sesquiterpenes. The highest isoprene emission potential was observed in June (1.3 μg g −1 dry weight h −1 , (at T =30°C and PPFD=1000 μmol m −2 s −1 according to Guenther et al.) and the highest sesquiterpene emission potential in July (0.6 μg g −1 dry weight h −1 , scaled to 30°C similarly to the monoterpenes).

The carbon dioxide exchange in arctic and subarctic terrestrial ecosystems has been measured using the eddy-covariance method at sites representing the latitudinal and longitudinal extremes of the European Arctic sea areas as part of the Land Arctic Physical Processes (LAPP) project. The sites include two fen (Kaamanen and Kevo) and one mountain birch ecosystems in subarctic northern Finland (69° N); fen, heathland, and snowbed willow ecosystems in northeastern Greenland (74° N); and a polar semidesert site in Svalbard (79° N). The measurement results, which are given as weekly average diurnal cycles, show the striking seasonal development of the net CO2 fluxes. The seasonal periods important for the net CO2 fluxes, i.e. winter, thaw, pre-leaf, summer, and autumn can be identified from measurements of the physical environment, such as temperature, albedo, and greenness. During the late winter period continuous efflux is observed at the permafrost-free Kaamanen site. At the permafrost sites, efflux begins during the thaw period, which lasts about 3–5 weeks, in contrast to the Kaamanen site where efflux continues at the same rate as during the winter. Seasonal efflux maximum is during the pre-leaf period, which lasts about 2–5 weeks. The summer period lasts 6 weeks in NE Greenland but 10–14 weeks in northern Finland. During a high summer week, the mountain birch ecosystem had the highest gross photosynthetic capacity, GPmax, followed by the fen ecosystems. The polar semidesert ecosystem had the lowest GPmax. By the middle of August, noon uptake fluxes start to decrease as the solar elevation angle decreases and senescence begins within the vascular plants. At the end of the autumn period, which lasts 2–5 weeks, topsoil begins to freeze at the end of August in Svalbard; at the end of September at sites in eastern Greenland; and one month later at sites in northern Finland.

Net ecosystem CO2 exchange was measured over a mountain birch forest in northern Finland throughout the growing season. The maximal net CO2 uptake rate of about − 0.5 mg(CO2) m−2 s−1 was observed at the end of July. The highest nocturnal respiration rates in early August were 0.2 mg(CO2) m−2 s−1. The daily CO2 balances during the time of maximal photosynthesis were about −15 g(CO2) m−2 d−1. The mountain birch forest acted as a net sink of CO2 from 30 June to 28 August. During that period the net CO2 balance was −448 g(CO2)m−2. The interannual representativeness of the observed balances was studied using a simplified daily balance model, with daily mean global radiation and air temperature as the input parameters. The year-to-year variation in the phenological development was parameterised as a function of the cumulative effective temperature sum. The daily balance model was used for estimating the variability in the seasonal CO2 balances due to the timing of spring and meteorological factors. The sink term of CO2 in 1996 was lower than the 15-year mean, mainly due to the relatively late emergence of the leaves.

This work is part of the project Biogenic VOC Emissions and Photochemistry in the Boreal regions of Europe (BIPHOREP). A short overview is first given of the project activities. This paper specifically deals with ambient air VOC and ozone concentrations. Both biogenic emissions and photochemical processes have strong seasonal cycles. The emission of biogenic VOCs (isoprene and terpenes) takes place mainly between May and October. Average ozone concentrations have a spring maximum and, in the northern parts of the boreal region, a minimum in late summer. Photochemical ozone production takes place in March–October. Elevated ozone concentrations are observed in spring and summer in connection with favourable meteorological situations. Analysis of ozone and total nitrate concentrations together with a factor analysis of C2–C6 VOC concentrations show that the concentrations of anthropogenic compounds are elevated when ozone concentrations are above the background level. However, also the compounds with biogenic origin show higher concentrations then, because elevated ozone concentrations are connected with warm continental air masses. Factor analysis suggests that 1-butene, propene and ethene have also biogenic sources.

The vertical fluxes of monoterpenes, measured above a boreal forest canopy by a micrometeorological gradient method during two days in summer 1997, are presented. The forest, composed mainly of Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris ), emitted significant amounts of monoterpenes, α-pinene and δ 3 -carene being the major species. The correlations of measured monoterpene fluxes with several meteorological parameters are presented. The best correlation was found with the IR radiation temperature of the canopy. The temperature dependency of the monoterpene fluxes, obtained from the measurements, was β =0.20 °C −1 . The mean total monoterpene emission rates, normalized to 30°C with temperature coefficients β =0.09 °C −1 and gb =0.20 °C −1 , were 190 ng m −2 s −1 and 570 ng m −2 s −1 , respectively.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute, in collaboration with the University of Helsinki, has established a new ground-based remote-sensing network in Finland. The network consists of five topographically, ecologically and climatically different sites distributed from southern to northern Finland. The main goal of the network is to monitor air pollution and boundary layer properties in near real time, with a Doppler lidar and ceilometer at each site. In addition to these operational tasks, two sites are members of the Aerosols, Clouds and Trace gases Research InfraStructure Network (ACTRIS); a Ka band cloud radar at Sodankylä will provide cloud retrievals within CloudNet, and a multi-wavelength Raman lidar, PollyXT (POrtabLe Lidar sYstem eXTended), in Kuopio provides optical and microphysical aerosol properties through EARLINET (the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network). Three C-band weather radars are located in the Helsinki metropolitan area and are deployed for operational and research applications. We performed two inter-comparison campaigns to investigate the Doppler lidar performance, compare the backscatter signal and wind profiles, and to optimize the lidar sensitivity through adjusting the telescope focus length and data-integration time to ensure sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in low-aerosol-content environments. In terms of statistical characterization, the wind-profile comparison showed good agreement between different lidars. Initially, there was a discrepancy in the SNR and attenuated backscatter coefficient profiles which arose from an incorrectly reported telescope focus setting from one instrument, together with the need to calibrate. After diagnosing the true telescope focus length, calculating a new attenuated backscatter coefficient profile with the new telescope function and taking into account calibration, the resulting attenuated backscatter profiles all showed good agreement with each other. It was thought that harsh Finnish winters could pose problems, but, due to the built-in heating systems, low ambient temperatures had no, or only a minor, impact on the lidar operation – including scanning-head motion. However, accumulation of snow and ice on the lens has been observed, which can lead to the formation of a water/ice layer thus attenuating the signal inconsistently. Thus, care must be taken to ensure continuous snow removal.

We adapt general statistical methods to estimate the optimal error covariance matrices in a regional inversion system inferring methane surface emissions from atmospheric concentrations. Using a minimal set of physical hypotheses on the patterns of errors, we compute a guess of the error statistics that is optimal in regard to objective statistical criteria for the specific inversion system. With this very general approach applied to a real-data case, we recover sources of errors in the observations and in the prior state of the system that are consistent with expert knowledge while inferred from objective criteria and with affordable computation costs. By not assuming any specific error patterns, our results depict the variability and the inter-dependency of errors induced by complex factors such as the misrepresentation of the observations in the transport model or the inability of the model to reproduce well the situations of steep gradients of concentrations. Situations with probable significant biases (e.g., during the night when vertical mixing is ill-represented by the transport model) can also be diagnosed by our methods in order to point at necessary improvement in a model. By additionally analysing the sensitivity of the inversion to each observation, guidelines to enhance data selection in regional inversions are also proposed. We applied our method to a recent significant accidental methane release from an offshore platform in the North Sea and found methane fluxes of the same magnitude than what was officially declared.

Methane emissions from Lompolojankka, a Finnish aapa mire within the Arctic Circle, were studied by non-intrusive Keeling plot methods, to place better constraints on the seasonal variations in isotopic signature of methane (δ 13 C CH4 ) emitted from Arctic wetland. Air samples were collected in Tedlar bags over the wetland at heights of 42 and 280 cm between May and October 2009 and in August 2008. The mixing ratio and δ 13 C of the methane in the samples were incorporated into Keeling plot analyses to derive bulk δ 13 C CH4 signatures for the methane inputs to the air above the wetland. The results show an unexpected consistence in δ 13 C CH4 from early to late summer, clustered around −68.5±0.7‰, but during spring thaw and autumnal freezing, δ 13 C CH4 is enriched by approximately 2 and 4‰, respectively. The techniques reported in this paper are simple and economical to employ, and give a bulk source signature for the methane inputs to the air above the entire wetland that can be extrapolated to a larger regional area. Forest and peat bog fires occur almost every summer in several parts of Russian boreal forests due to long rainless and heat periods at summertime. Particulate matter and different gases (CO, CO2, NOx, O3, SO2) in air can be transported thousands of kilometers away from the fire areas. Increased concentrations of the different parameters, like carbon monoxide and aerosol particles were observed on certain days in Southern Finland and even Finnish Lapland during Russian wild fire episodes in summer 2010. During these days the wind direction was from East or Southeast to Finland.

Winter CO2 fluxes represent an important component of the annual carbon budget in northern ecosystems. Understanding winter respiration processes and their responses to climate change is also central to our ability to assess terrestrial carbon cycle and climate feedbacks in the future. However, the factors influencing the spatial and temporal patterns of winter ecosystem respiration (Reco) of northern ecosystems are poorly understood. For this reason, we analyzed eddy covariance flux data from 57 ecosystem sites ranging from 35 N to 70 N. Deciduous forests were characterized by the highest winter Reco rates (0.90±0.39 gCm−2 d−1), when winter is defined as the period during which daily air temperature remains below 0 C. By contrast, arctic wetlands had the lowest winter Reco rates (0.02±0.02 gCm−2 d−1). Mixed forests, evergreen needle-leaved forests, grasslands, croplands and boreal wetlands were characterized by intermediate winter Reco rates (g Cm−2 d−1) of 0.7 (±0.33), 0.60(±0.38), 0.62(±0.43), 0.49(±0.22) and 0.27(±0.08), respectively. Our cross site analysis showed that winter air (Tair) and soil (Tsoil) temperature played a dominating role in determining the spatial patterns of winter Reco in both forest and managed ecosystems (grasslands and croplands). Besides temperature, the seasonal amplitude of the leaf area index (LAI), inferred from satellite observation, or growing season gross primary productivity, which we use here as a proxy for the amount of recent carbon available for Reco in the subsequent winter, played a marginal role in winter CO2 emissions from forest ecosystems. We found that winter Reco sensitivity to temperature variation across space (QS) was higher than the one over time (interannual, QT ). This can be expected because QS not only accounts for climate gradients across sites but also for (positively correlated) the spatial variability of substrate quantity. Thus, if the models estimate future warming impacts on Reco based onQS rather thanQT, this could overestimate the impact of temperature changes., JRC.H.7-Climate Risk Management

Fluxes of greenhouse gases (GHG) carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) were measured during a two month campaign at a drained peatland forest in Finland by the eddy covariance (EC) technique (CO2 and N2O), and automatic and manual chambers (CO2, CH4 and N2O). In addition, GHG concentrations and soil parameters (mineral nitrogen, temperature, moisture content) in the peat profile were measured. The aim of the measurement campaign was to quantify the GHG fluxes during freezing and thawing of the top-soil, a time period with potentially high GHG fluxes, and to compare different flux measurement methods. The forest was a net CO2 sink during the two months and the fluxes of CO2 dominated the GHG exchange. The peat soil was a small sink of atmospheric CH4 and a small source of N2O. Both CH4 oxidation and N2O production took place in the top-soil whereas CH4 was produced in the deeper layers of the peat, which were unfrozen throughout the measurement period. During the frost-thaw events of the litter layer distinct peaks in CO2 and N2O emissions were observed. The CO2 peak followed tightly the increase in soil temperature, whereas the N2O peak occurred with a delay after the thawing of the litter layer. CH4 fluxes did not respond to the thawing of the peat soil. The CO2 and N2O emission peaks were not captured by the manual chambers and hence we conclude that high time-resolution measurements with automatic chambers or EC are necessary to quantify fluxes during peak emission periods. Sub-canopy EC measurements and chamber-based fluxes of CO2 and N2O were comparable, although the fluxes of N2O measured by EC were close to the detection limit of the system. We conclude that if fluxes are high enough, i.e. greater than 5–10 μg N m−2 h−1, the EC method is a good alternative to measure N2O and CO2 fluxes at ecosystem scale, thereby minimizing problems with chamber enclosures and spatial representativeness of the measurements.

The NitroEurope project aims to improve understanding of the nitrogen (N) cycle at the continental scale and quantify the major fluxes of reactive N by a combination of reactive N measurements and modelling activities. As part of the overall measurement strategy, a network of 13 flux ‘super sites’ (Level-3) has been established, covering European forest, arable, grassland and wetland sites, with the objective of quantifying the N budget at a high spatial resolution and temporal frequency for 4.5 years, and to estimate greenhouse gas budgets (N2O, CH4 and CO2). These sites are supported by a network of low-cost flux measurements (Level-2, 9 sites) and a network to infer reactive N fluxes at 58 sites (Level-1), for comparison with carbon (C) flux measurements. Measurements at the Level-3 sites include high resolution N2O, NO (also CH4, CO2) fluxes, wet and dry N deposition, leaching of N and C and N transformations in plant, litter and soil. Results for the first 11 months (1.8.2006 to 30.6.2007) suggest that the grasslands are the largest source of N2O, that forests are the largest source of NO and sink of CH4 and that N deposition rates influence NO and N2O fluxes in non-agricultural ecosystems. The NO and N2O emission ratio is influenced by soil type and precipitation. First budgets of reactive N entering and leaving the ecosystem and of net greenhouse gas exchange are outlined. Further information on rates of denitrification to N2 and biological N2 fixation is required to complete the N budgets for some sites. The quantitative roles played by CO2, N2O and CH4 in defining net greenhouse gas exchange differ widely between ecosystems depending on the interactions of climate, soil type, land use and management.

[1] In this study deposition velocity (vd) of atmospheric hydrogen to mineral and peat soils was measured in boreal forest environments in southern Finland using soil chamber measurement technique. vd was largest during the snow-free season (0.04–0.07 cm/s) and smallest during winter (0–0.04 cm/s). Velocities decreased when soil temperature fell below 5°C, but deposition was observed also in near-zero temperatures. Deposition velocities to organic soil forest floor were larger than to mineral soil, but it was unclear whether this was due to the effect of carbon or the effect on soil porosity. Fluxes to both mineral and peat soils had similar temperature and soil moisture responses. In very dry and moist conditions vd decreased rapidly. Optimum soil moisture ranged from about 6 to 50 % of water by volume. The magnitude of vd was similar at urban Helsinki and at rural Loppi sites.

The aim of this study was to asses how the variability in carbon gas exchange at the plant community scale affected the C gas exchange estimates at the ecosystem scale in a fen that was homogeneous in a micrometeorological sense, that is, had an even surface topography and plant cover. CO 2 and CH 4 exchange was measured at the plant community scale with chambers and at the ecosystem scale with the eddy covariance (EC) technique. Community-scale measurements were upscaled to the ecosystem scale by weighting the community-specific estimates by the area of the community. All communities were net CO 2 sinks and CH 4 sources during the growing season, but net ecosystem production (NEP) and CH 4 emissions ranged from 21 to 190 g CO 2 -C m -2 and from 4.3 to 13 g CH 4 -C m -2 , respectively, between the communities. The seasonal estimates of NEP and CH 4 , upscaled to the 200 m radius from the EC tower, were 82 and 7.9 g CH 4 -C m -2 , which agreed well with the EC measurements. As the communities differed markedly in their C gas dynamics, their proportions controlled the ecosystem scale estimates. This paper presents an example of how air pollution models can be used together with energy system models to study the impacts of climate change mitigation strategies on air pollution. As many mitigation measures of greenhouse gases (GHGs) affect the use of fossil fuels in energy production, they can have important side-effects on other air pollution problems. This paper studies on a national scale the impacts of the planned GHG reduction measures on multiple air pollution problems in Finland, concentrating on acidification of forest soils and lakes, tropospheric ozone levels harmful to humans and vegetation and on emissions of fine particles. The air pollutant emission scenarios with the alternative energy choices are calculated for about 200 large point sources, assuming the present emission limit legislation. Disperse emissions are treated at municipality level. The analysis extends to the year 2020. The implementation of the Kyoto protocol in Finland would induce notable reductions of multiple air pollutant emissions and related environmental impacts. A 6–11% reduction in ecosystems threatened by acidification in Southern and Central Finland would be achieved with the Finnish Climate Strategy alone. Substantial improvement in ozone levels would be reached in all scenarios compared to the current situation. The measures of the Climate Strategy could reduce the harmful ozone levels by a further 3%. The measures of the Climate Strategy would not significantly affect the primary particulate emissions in the future because the emissions from large power plants are already effectively controlled. Contrary to the fuel choices of the large units, expanded use of small-scale wood combustion can result in considerable increases of both fine particulate and VOC emissions.

We applied a site evaluation approach combining Lagrangian Stochastic footprint modeling with a quality assessment approach for eddy-covariance data to 25 forested sites of the CarboEurope-IP network. The analysis addresses the spatial representativeness of the flux measurements, instrumental effects on data quality, spatial patterns in the data quality, and the performance of the coordinate rotation method. Our findings demonstrate that application of a footprint filter could strengthen the CarboEurope-IP flux database, since only one third of the sites is situated in truly homogeneous terrain. Almost half of the sites experience a significant reduction in eddy-covariance data quality under certain conditions, though these effects are mostly constricted to a small portion of the dataset. Reductions in data quality of the sensible heat flux are mostly induced by characteristics of the surrounding terrain, while the latent heat flux is subject to instrumentation-related problems. The Planar-Fit coordinate rotation proved to be a reliable tool for the majority of the sites using only a single set of rotation angles. Overall, we found a high average data quality for the CarboEurope-IP network, with good representativeness of the measurement data for the specified target land cover types.

We present the first estimates of speciated monoterpene emissions from the North European coniferous forests. Measured emission factors and emission profiles of boreal tree species (Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, Betula pendula, Salix phylicifolia, Populus tremula, and Alnus incana) were used together with detailed satellite land cover information and meteorological data in an emission model based on the Guenther emission algorithms. The variation of the coniferous biomass within the boreal region (60°N to 70°N) was obtained from forest inventory data, and the seasonal variability of the deciduous biomass was taken into account through simple boreal climatology parameterisation. The annual biogenic emissions in the boreal zone are dominated by coniferous species, but in the summer months, the deciduous contribution to the monoterpene and isoprene emissions is considerable. Norway spruce (Picea abies) is the most important isoprene emitter in the north European boreal forests. The biogenic emission fluxes in the South boreal zone are approximately twice as high as fluxes in the North boreal zone. α- and β-pinene, carene, and cineole are the most abundant emitted terpenes, with a strong contribution of isoprene and linalool during the summer months.
