This study investigates the integration of place-based environmental education (PBEE) during emergency remote education (ERE) and in-person teaching, considering the implications of COVID-19. The objectives include (a) to understand if and how teachers used PBEE as a pedagogical learning tool during ERE, (b) to identify PBEE adaptations for implementation in an online context, and (c) to explore opportunities and barriers to PBEE during ERE. Ontario (Canada) educators' perspectives were obtained through an online survey and focus groups. Using non-parametric statistical analyses, perspectives concerning opportunities and challenges to integrating and delivering PBEE in lessons were identified. Additional focus included educators' views on student receptivity and knowledge retention. Findings indicate educators' appreciation for PBEE as a pedagogical approach, yet delivery challenges arise from systemic barriers causing inconsistency in PBEE delivery. Obstacles include curriculum demands, institutional disinvestment, grade-level constraints, and limited training. Despite challenges, educators showcase innovation and commitment to PBEE during ERE, emphasizing its enduring value. The study underscores educators' resourcefulness in adapting PBEE methods and the potential for renewed significance of outdoor education amidst the pandemic's influence on students' connection to nature. The Chilean university system has programs that accept students with low standardized test scores, leading to inadequate preparation and a higher dropout potential. However, these students may have valuable sociocultural experiences that can be transformed into contextual skills. A teaching/learning methodology was designed and evaluated to address these gaps and motivate students to achieve university-level objectives through "meaningful learning". The methodology involved using quantitative tests and qualitative surveys to identify contextual skills. Strategies were then developed to guide students in applying these skills to classroom problems. The approach was tested in four courses in the Architecture program at Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana, with a control section and an experimental section for each course. In the experimental section, students with higher levels of contextual skills led small groups with lower levels of development in those skills. The results showed improvements in the average grades of the experimental section compared to the control section in three out of the four courses. Additionally, most students showed significant improvements compared to their scores on standardized tests. This methodology has the potential to enhance the construction of concepts and facilitate "meaningful learning" by leveraging students' previous sociocultural contextual learning for a successful university experience. Social work ethics is vital to social work education and professional development. However, traditional didactic teaching does not always translate to internalization of social work ethics, and few visual teaching tools measure the extent to which the students have truly internalized professional ethics. Using the perspective of action research, the present study introduced a progressive teaching reform to a Master of Social Work (MSW)-level social work ethics curriculum at a social work school in China. The progressive reform went through two action cycles. In the first cycle, a preliminary attempt, the instructor redesigned the course structure and applied student-generated microfilms as a final assignment. In the second cycle, educators from China and the United States collaborated in class to revise the course in response to issues raised in the first cycle and explore refined and more effective pathways to help MSW students internalize and advocate for professional ethics through filmmaking. The present study examined successes and failures throughout the reform process, providing practical lessons and evidence for social work educators interested in adopting filmmaking as an experiential teaching tool in MSW educational practices. In the context of globalization, proficiency in English-speaking is crucial for the academic and career development of university students. However, traditional English teaching methods often fall short in effectively enhancing students' speaking proficiency. With the advancement of information technology (IT), interactive mobile learning has gradually emerged as a vital teaching tool, offering new avenues for teaching English speaking. By leveraging the convenience and diversity of mobile devices, interactive mobile learning provides students with a flexible environment to improve their speaking proficiency. The current study predominantly focuses on the integration of technology and education, but there is limited investigation into the specific applications and effectiveness of interactive mobile learning in enhancing Englishspeaking proficiency. Furthermore, existing studies tend to provide fragmented analyses of mobile learning interaction behaviors and their constituent elements, failing to fully reveal the advantages of this approach. This study aims to construct an interactive mobile learning framework tailored to university students' English-speaking practice, analyze the interaction behaviors and elements within this framework, and explore its impact on improving students' speaking proficiency. The goal is to enrich the theoretical system of interactive mobile learning and provide practical insights for English-speaking teaching in higher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents the results from a study that analyzed the length, content, and emphasis of ethics education taught in Social Work degrees at Spanish universities. The universities that offer this degree were identified (37), and the ethics courses in these course programs were analyzed using the corresponding course guides (27) and the specific skills identified in those course guides (175). Our results identified 14 specific skills. From a content analysis, it is evident that the ethics education that future social workers receive appears to be inadequate with respect to the challenges they will face in different areas of intervention and professional work. Ethics courses currently taught at Spanish universities seems inadequate to provide sufficient abilities and professional skills for the ethical practice of Social Work. This study identified the contribution of ethics education to the field of Social Work in the current context of complexity and superdiversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Teacher training and a commitment to innovation in teaching are determining factors in the success of technology adoption processes. This article presents a study on the opportunities produced through the collaboration of the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education and the ProFuturo program, which arose during the COVID-19 pandemic. This collaboration resulted in the improvement of digital competency among teachers and pupils and in transference to educational practise. It also strengthened the existing limited capabilities for developing mass training programs for teachers in the country. The research was conducted through an online survey, with a cross-sectional, quantitative, and non-experimental focus from two data sources. A total of 3,565 teachers answered the digital survey for teachers trained using the Open Model in Ecuador between 2020 and 2022. On the other hand, 7,257 teachers answered the ProFuturo Self-Assessment of Digital Skills of Teachers (https://competencyassessment.profuturo.education/?lang=en). The results show an improvement in the competency of teachers following their participation in the program and confirm that they considered digital transformation in the classroom to be of great utility. Teacher training remains a cornerstone of high-quality education and research as this contribution proves a positive impact on learning experiences, where there was a significant transference, driven by an improvement in digital skills applied to the teaching process. Although teaching would seem to be exclusively coupled to each country's economic and technological development, it can also be associated with social transformation, provided that it promotes social innovation: in other words, new ways of conceiving society. This leads us to ask how music teachers are being trained in terms of innovation, a concept that plays a decisive role in our current knowledge-based society and economy. This article seeks to obtain an overview of the goals and structures associated with the concept of innovation as featured in the Master's Degree for secondary-school music teaching in Spain. We analyzed the Spanish legislation and the Master's Degree programs of 26 Spanish universities. Our results evidence a lack of consensus regarding which objectives should be pursued and which innovative practices should be prioritized. We nevertheless note a tendency to view innovation merely as an exercise designed to help teachers and students adapt to existing school reality by proposing activities and projects in the area of digital technology, along with examples of "good practices". We conclude that educational innovation needs to make fundamental progress, not only in terms of its presuppositions, but also in its actions, which should lead to the development of critical, creative attitudes that can foster true social transformation. Heritage education connects with the student’s social environment. It makes a perfect setting for social learning. In this environment, the presence of cultural heritage as a past legacy opens up a wide range of opportunities from conservation to be the primary source of interdisciplinary knowledge. In this text, it develops a teaching innovation proposal for the training of future teachers inspired by the controversial heritage (air raid shelter) of the city of Cuenca. These territory’s traces can be exploited from the didactic and educational dimension. So, the proposal had been materialized through two basics related elements: on one hand, an interpretative itinerary in situ and on the other, the use of research and enquiry methodologies developed previously in the classroom. Archaeological remains become essential pieces of historical memory. The act of choosing a place to visit (local and close to the students) it responds to a didactic practice that focus the educational value of the social science teaching-learning process. In that way, it overcomes a compartmentalized and sealed vision of these sciences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CRITICAL pedagogy , *COVID-19 pandemic , *COLLEGE campuses , *TEACHING methods , *COMPREHENSION , *EDUCATIONAL innovations - Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed an alarming chasm between traditional higher education pedagogies and the lived experiences of students, posing new challenges to educators worldwide. Addressing this, our study proposes a curricular paradigm shift that foregrounds sensory and embodied learning. Influenced by a Critical Pedagogy of Place framework, we conceptualize the delivery of an urban studies module as an experience-centred encounter with the campus. Our research examines the implications of incorporating course activities and teaching styles that promote sensory-embodied forms of learning and their potential to break free from the confines of the physical classrooms. Empirical evidence from our study demonstrates a remarkable 87% increase in student theoretical comprehension, heralding the transformative potential of turning university campuses into sensorial and embodied critical spaces. Such a transformative pedagogical approach critically questions the outmoded banking education model and encourages students to interrogate deep-seated social and cultural norms and practices. In pushing the boundaries of traditional pedagogy, our study suggests the need to revamp higher education learning experiences to resonate more closely with contemporary students' lived experiences. - Abstract
The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China pointed out the importance of "comprehensively promo- ting rural revitalization". To achieve rural revitalization, proper planning and talents are crucial. To meet the demands of the times, the course Rural Planning Principles has been reformed with the goal of cultivating applied planning professionals who can serve the major strategic needs of rural revitalization. By analyzing the current status and problems of urban and rural planning education, the focus is on breaking through the pain points through the integration of ideological and political education, textbook compilation, practical training, and comprehensive evaluation. A "focused and precise" ideological element system is constructed, and a "three-linkage" model of integrating ideological and political education is implemented to cultivate students' ability to solve practical problems in rural development. The students' love for agriculture, rural areas, and farmers is nurtured, and they are encouraged to fulfill their responsibility of "promoting agricultural development and strengthening the country", contributing their youth to the national rural development. Amidst efforts to fulfill the Chinese government's education guide for morality building and character cultivating, curriculum ideology and politics have emerged as key aspects in higher education pedagogy. English linguistics, a staple for junior English majors and often perceived as theoretical and challenging, represents an opportunity to align with national education directives. This study explores the integration of ideological and political education within the English major's curriculum, specifically within an English linguistics course. This paper details an empirical case study conducted in a local Jiangxi university in China, where an "ideological education + linguistics" teaching model was carefully crafted and implemented in the introductory linguistics session. Methodologies included classroom observation, post-lesson questionnaire and interview, revealing enhancements in student engagement, understanding of linguistic concepts, and scientific and logical reasoning. Additionally, noteworthy improvements in teaching methodologies were reported. The findings affirm the model's feasibility and effectiveness in reinforcing the curriculum ideology and politics in major disciplines, suggesting a beneficial tripartite impact on national educational goals, student learning, and teaching innovation. Research significance indicates that by applying their experiences, front-line teachers can act as researchers, enhancing the implementation of educational research; besides theoretical studies, micro case studies are essential to validate and complement educational research, thus contributing to the development of a comprehensive theoretical framework. CRITICAL thinking , *ENGLISH language , *ENGLISH as a foreign language - Abstract
The teaching of critical thinking (CT) has become an important requirement in many English language classrooms at different educational levels, yet little is known about how teachers promote the learning of CT. This article reports on a qualitative study examining the ways in which two university English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers in China attempted to blend CT into their reading classrooms, and the factors that influenced their attempts at CT innovation. In-depth, semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, artefacts, and observation of eight joint discussion sessions between the two participants and the first author were analyzed to explain the participants' implementation of CT innovation in their intensive reading courses and the influential factors. The findings indicate that the teachers implemented CT innovation in reading instruction through the infusion approach, which means explicitly highlighting CT during the course orientation of their reading courses, while also improving the students' CT abilities and language competence through reflective and collaborative writing using reading journals. The study also revealed several factors that influenced their attempts at CT innovation. The study sheds light on how teachers can be supported to innovate conventional CT instruction in the reading classroom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

University tutoring can play an important role in the transition from content-centered learning to student-centered learning in the transformations that are taking place in higher education institutions. This transition needs evidence-based proposals that go in this direction but that adapt to what teachers are already doing when they individually tutor their students without adding new workloads to their saturated schedules. Reflective Learning is conceived as an active Student-Centered Learning methodology that aims to increase learners' agency, focusing specifically on developing learners' capacities to influence their learning environments and their lifelong learning trajectories. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no model that describes how to implement reflective individual tutoring in higher education, leaving a significant gap in knowledge and research about this area of university teaching activity. The aim of this work is to present the RITHE (Reflective Individual Tutoring in Higher Education) model, based, on one hand, on the lessons learned studying highly effective tutors in primary and secondary education, and on the other, on the theoretical and methodological principles of reflective learning. This article will explain a tutorial proposal, which is structured in three blocks and seven phases. The model is intended to serve as a guide for university educators, with applications in various areas of knowledge, and to encourage evidence-based practice research on the subject. Addressing the challenges faced in “Principles of Chemical Engineering” teaching, characterized by students’ difficulties in comprehension, application, and persistence, the teaching team, guided by the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) philosophy, has enriched the theoretical teaching framework through a “multi-dimensional and comprehensive” approach. Efforts to solidify foundational knowledge and strengthen practical skills aim to cultivate chemical engineering thinking. The adoption of a “multi-project, multi-stakeholder” approach for teaching evaluation has facilitated the innovative reform of the “Principles of Chemical Engineering” course. This initiative has significantly enhanced students’ abilities in innovation, practice, and engineering thinking. Simultaneously, as the teaching team progresses with the instructional innovations and reforms, their engagement in teaching research and participation in teaching competitions have notably improved their teaching competencies. The article discusses the use of approaches from improvisational theatre in teaching innovation management. Experienced facilitators and trainers have a large repertoire of creativity methods and certainly also of warm-up methods for creative sessions. Traditional university courses differ from workshops and meetings in a number of ways, which is why the methods from workshops are hard to be used in this context. Improvisational theatre is based on some principles that fit very well with a mindset of creativity and out of the box thinking. This article describes thoughts behind the initial experiments of how improvisational theatre aspects can be used in the context of a conventional lecture setting and what conclusions can be drawn with regard to its further use in teaching. Background: The lack of studies that specifically examines the challenges of implementing technology in physical education, with a content analysis approach using NVivo 12 Plus prompted this study to be carried out. Research Objective: This study identifies strategies to overcome these obstacles and provides recommendations for policymakers and educators. The aim is to increase the effectiveness of the learning process through more effective use of technology. This research is also encouraged because the related findings are one of the few studies that have been conducted, especially in Indonesia, so this can fill the research gap. Methods: This method combines qualitative research with content analysis. It used Nvivo 12 Plus software to discover and analyse the main themes. The units of analysis used are text search queries and case classification. Finding/Results: The findings of this study reveal that the employment of technological aids in physical education is beneficial as it allows greater access and flexibility in learning, enhances students’ motivation and participation, and offers innovative teaching-learning tools. Nonetheless, inside the Indonesian education sector, there are still identified issues regarding constrained access to technology in many places, considering gaps in the deployment of digital infrastructure and the development of students’ and educators’ digital skills. Conclusion: Improvements in telecommunications infrastructure, better digital literacy among the teaching and student populations, and opportunities for closer governmental cooperation with industry will be vital to addressing these hurdles more effectively. Although there are still some struggles, this research highlights how technology should be implemented in physical education in the digital age. This study helps identify and analyse the main challenges to developing strategies for improving technology use in physical education, especially among students and educators.

Preschool teachers' teaching innovation is an important factor in enhancing teaching quality and improving children's creativity. Based on ecological systems theory and self-determination theory, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between kindergartens' organizational climate and preschool teachers' teaching innovation and the mediating role of teaching efficacy in it. In this study, an online questionnaire was distributed to 2092 preschool teachers from different provinces using an Organizational Climate Scale, Teaching Efficacy Scale, and Teaching Innovation Scale. The study used SPSS 25.0 software and the SPSS PROCESS macro program for data processing. The results showed that there was a positive correlation among kindergartens' organizational climate, teaching efficacy, and teaching innovation, and that kindergartens' organizational climate not only directly and positively predicted teaching innovation, but also indirectly predicted teaching innovation through the mediating role of teaching efficacy. The study explored the internal and external influences on preschool teachers' teaching innovation and revealed their underlying mechanisms, providing theoretical support for research and educational practice on preschool teachers' teaching innovation and children's creativity. TEACHING methods , *CASE method (Teaching) , *DIRECT instruction , *SUSTAINABLE development , *CURRICULUM implementation - Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of active teaching methodologies, namely, problem-oriented learning and the case method, to develop sustainability competencies. It also analyses the advantages and challenges for teachers when implementing the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in eight undergraduate and postgraduate degrees within the framework of a cross-departmental collaboration. Design/methodology/approach: A mixed research methodology was used: a quantitative study to assess the levels of acquisition of sustainability and research competencies and the potential correlation between them, as well as a mixed study of the advantages and challenges for the teachers participating in the cross-departmental initiative. Curriculum content linked to the SDGs was worked on. Active teaching methodologies and a competency assessment rubric were used as curriculum implementation strategies in the eight courses involved. Findings: Active teaching methodologies are suitable to implement the SDGs in university teaching and to develop both sustainability and research competencies. A synergic effect is observed between them. Coordinated work between teachers of different subjects in several degrees contributes to developing a culture of sustainability at the university. Research limitations/implications: Although the collaboration between teachers from different disciplines was successful, this study did not promote interdisciplinary projects among students from different degrees. This promises to be highly valuable for future research. Practical implications: Students can become present and future leaders in achieving the SDGs. This approach can be replicated in other educational institutions. Social implications: This study bridges the gap between theoretical recommendations and the practical implementation of the SDGs in undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Originality/value: Coordinated work between teachers of different subjects in different degrees contributes to the development of a culture of sustainability at the university. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An educational innovation experience developed as part of the curriculum for the Early Childhood Education degree is presented within the framework of the scientific dissemination project entitled 'INFA-CIENCIA: From the girls of today to the scientists of tomorrow', which pursues two objectives: (1) To bolster future teachers' knowledge of women scientists and (2) To improve their didactic skills so that they can adapt the research carried out by women to children's capacities. The key findings are a high level of satisfaction amongst teachers with the interventions by university students; the need to continue implementing this innovation, due to the scant knowledge of women scientists amongst students; and the advisability of the students voluntarily choosing the woman scientist they want to work on, in order to boost their motivation and interest.
