The article documents the process by which four independent high school students from the Francis W. Parker School in Chicago and the faculty adviser of their school newspaper, "The Weekly" (a monthly), produced a daylong journalism symposium designed to promote and explore democratic education, student leadership, and professional mentorship in high school journalism. The five authors individually and collaboratively reflect on how the experience of bringing together 10 professional journalists, one professor of journalism, and students from six schools around Chicago created a forum for discussion of the rapidly changing field of journalism and helped articulate the complexity--and the potential for productive interaction--of one city's journalism community.

Abstract

In spite of longstanding concern over the impact that parental problem drug-use may have on the lives of children, very little is currently known about the way in which problem drug-using fathers experience and interpret their parenting roles. This study explores the lived experience of fathering among problem drug-using men and considers the impact that drug addiction may have on how these fathers enact their roles as parents and the relationships that they have with their children. Through qualitative interviewing with a sample of fathers with a history of drug addiction, this research highlights the incompatibility between a problem drug-use career and an active and involved fathering role. However, it also reveals how although many of these men may not be fathering in a practical sense, they would appear to nonetheless hold well-developed notions of what qualifies as good parenting and a desire to better fulfill their role as a father. The findings suggest that greater acknowledgement of fathering issues and of men’s parenting status in the provision of services would be beneficial. Furthermore, engaging with these men as fathers and addressing their parenting issues whilst treating their drug addiction problems could potentially facilitate better, more responsible, involved, and perhaps most importantly drug-free fathering.

Abstract

The need for social belonging – feelings of being accepted, included, respected in, and contributing to a setting (Walton & Brady, 2017)—is a basic human motivation (Baumeister & Leary, 1995) and critical to student learning, motivation, garnering support, and academic success (Walton & Cohen, 2007; Zumbrunn et al., 2014). However, belonging uncertainty, or worries about belonging in academic or professional settings, is often prevalent among members from socially and economically stigmatized groups (Walton & Cohen, 2007) and a lower sense of belonging is more common among underrepresented minority and first-generation students, who also tend to persist in college at lower rates than their peers (Gopalan & Brady, 2019). The social-belonging intervention provides students with counter-narratives to reframe the challenges they experience on campus as typical and with potential to improve. Several studies illustrate the power of the social-belonging intervention on student success (Walton & Cohen, 2007, 2011; Yeager et al., 2016). Incoming student orientation provides first-year and transfer college students an opportunity to learn how things work at their new school and meet other students, faculty, and staff members. Recently, universities have embedded the social belonging intervention as part of required incoming student orientation curriculum and researchers have tested the effects findings it can improve student belonging, well-being, engagement, persistence, and achievement—especially those from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds (Broda et al., 2018; Yeager et al., 2016). However, important questions remain as the majority of studies on the social belonging intervention have: (a) occurred in private selective or public flagship institutions limiting generalizability, (b) delivered the intervention in one-on-one sessions limiting scalability, and (c) used standardized belonging stories written by researchers limiting authenticity. This study employed authentic materials to test the social-belonging intervention with undergraduate students at a southeastern university, a diverse and broad-access public university. Similar to other student success studies in similar educational settings with similar populations that have illustrated the positive effects of embedding the intervention into required student curriculum (e.g., Broda et al., 2018; Murphy et al., 2020; Yeager et al., 2016), the current study will test the effectiveness of the social-belonging intervention employed as part of required incoming student orientation curriculum.

Nonconsensual sterilization is usually seen as the by-product of a classist and racist society; disability is ignored. This article examines the 1973 sterilization of two young black girls from Alabama and other precedent-setting court cases involving the sterilization of 'mentally retarded' white women to make disability more central to the historical analysis of sterilization. It analyzes the concept of mental retardation and the appeal of a surgical solution to birth control, assesses judicial deliberations over the 'right to choose' contraceptive sterilization when the capacity to consent is in doubt, and reflects on the shadow of eugenics that hung over the sterilization debate in the 1970s and 1980s.
