This report summarizes the results of the program of implementation of an RLU Demonstration System. This system allows the evaluation of the most unique parts of the RLU and has facilitated the resolution of problem areas in the RLU design. Enhancements to the RLU functional design are presented and an implementation plan for an RLU prototype is proposed. The purpose of this manual is to provide a guide for the use and operation of the Remote Link Unit Demonstration System (RLUDS) without the details of the design of the system. The sections of this manual provide information on: inspection of the equipment to verify a correct physical configuration, external cable connections, procedures for operation. This manual provides all the details necessary for operations of the RLUDS, assuming the user is generally knowledgeable of the concept, purpose, and configuration of the RLU and its major components. This report is Part III, Design Manual for the RLU Demonstration System, and provides detailed information on the hardware and software design. Volume 2 contains the following Appendices: Source Code Tape Directory; Hardware Schematics; and Software Flow Charts.

This document is a design manual for the Remote Link Unit Demonstration System (RLUDS). The Remote Link Unit (RLU) is a new design concept for remote terminals. This document contains detailed design information on the RLUDS. The RLUDS described in this design manual is an operational hardware breadboard prototype that performs most of the important RLU functions. This effort has demonstrated the feasibility of implementation of the Link Module (LM), the Interface Configuration Adapter (ICA), the Electronic Nameplate (NP) and the Interface between the Link Module and the Link Manager. The Link Manager (LMG) was simulated with a PDP-11 computer. The extent of RLU implementation encompassed by the demonstration unit is illustrated. This represents the results of a study on the application of the Remote Link Unit (RLU) and its design concepts to the Design-for-Repair Methodology Program. The report focuses on the incorporation of automated maintenance and fault tolerance in avionic systems. The major components used to implement the proposed design concepts are intelligent universal interface modules and electronic nameplates. A phased implementation plan for the integration of RLU concepts in the design of distributed avionic systems is also described. (Author)

This report presents a functional design of the Remote Link Unit (RLU). The RLU is an intelligent remote terminal which is compatible with hierarchical distributed processing. It has interface modules capable of processing subsystem data on-the-fly and supporting a universal signal interface which can be configured under software control to input or output analog and digital signals of varied types. Electronic nameplates containing identification, interface requirements and signal processing programs are attached to avionics subsystems to support the RLU operational features. The RLU stand-alone processing capabilities provide fault tolerance and facilitate maintenance. (Author)
