Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (1901-1962), an important name of modern Turkish literature, is one of the artists who wrote works in almost every genre of literature as well as being an academic. A novelist, short story writer, poet, essayist and literary historian, Tanpınar was, according to his own words, influenced by Paul Valery on the art of poetry. Paul Valery (1871-1945) influenced many poets not only with his poems but also with his views on poetry. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar read Paul Valery's Monsieur Teste in 1926 in Ankara. Saying that Monsieur Teste influenced him a lot, Tanpınar decided to translate the work into Turkish as soon as possible. But he died before completing the translation. Tanpınar's admiration for Paul Valery's art and ideas did not end there. During his years in France, he visits the city where Valery was born and his grave. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar often refers to Paul Valery's views, especially in his articles on poetry, but his main goal is to prepare a study on Paul Valery. The notes of this study, which we think he would have included in the introduction of Paul Valery's Monsieur Teste had he been able to complete the translation, are among the manuscripts left by Tanpınar. These manuscripts, in the form of scattered, disorganized notes, are, as one might expect, in old writing. We have gathered Tanpınar's handwritten manuscripts and transcribed them into new writing. We have also benefited from Tanpınar's letters and articles while interpreting his thoughts on Paul Valery, whom Tanpınar called his master. We have previously published Tanpınar's notes on Gerard de Nerval, which were also among his manuscripts. Undoubtedly, knowing the thoughts of artists on the sources of their influences will enable us to gain new perspectives on his art. In conclusion, Gerard de Nerval and Paul Valery are two important figures representing the technical and thematic sources of Tanpınar's poetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The most important factor of Turkish modernization, when considered on the scale of our intellectuals, is the effort to emulate the west. The adventure of westernization, which has been going on since the Tanzimat, makes its presence felt not only in the political, economic and military field, but also in the cultural and literary field. In the case of Ottoman intellectuals after the Tanzimat, the "divide" also emerges as a result of a "search". Those who code themselves completely to the West, those who adhere to their own culture and constants despite the West, and those who remain in a "dilemma" between East and West as a third way, constitute three different pillars of the intellectual tragedy in the modernization adventure. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, one of the Turkish intellectuals after the Tanzimat, is the portrait of an intellectual in the "void". The fact that he could not establish a sense and feeling connection with the sources of his own civilization, took him to the West on Valery's fringe. Despite the West, his teacher Yahya Kemal's moves towards his own resources and reviving his civilization remain inconclusive in many respects in the context of Tanpınar. Although Turkish poetry is one of the founding elements of our civilization for Yahya Kemal, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's transformation of this element into meaninglessness and its imitation of Western civilization's esthetic concern will be among the important issues to be discussed in this article [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The serpent which has been seen in almost all cultures since the first ages was ascribed separate and controversial meanings from one another. It has appeared in mythology, legend, fairy-tale and holy scripture books with different meanings from one another. While the serpent, on the one hand, has represented the death, it has also symbolized immortality, youth, and the power of healing. Today, it is still being used as the symbol of the medical sciences such as medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmaceutics, etc. Along with the various branches of art such as painting, sculpture, architecture and miniature, it has had a significant role with its rich world of associations to depict human beings through literature, which uses the potentials of the languages. This study is an effort to discuss the story "The Owner of the House" by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, and the story "My World of the Unknown" by Alifa Rifaat by means of a comparative method. Not only will the common points and the similarities be determined but also the differences will be presented along with the reasons. In both stories, the events happen in warm climates which are suitable for the serpent to live such as Cairo and Mosul. People come across with the serpents quite often in such places, and they depict the emotions aroused by them. Also, the relationship between the serpents and women observed in a number of cultures around the world, and the belief that the serpent is the owner of the house are seen in both of the two stories. This condition is seen in "The Owner of the House", where the story of protagonist's mother is told within the inside story. The serpents that fall in love with the women in both stories begin to dominate the lives of these women. In the story "The Owner of the House", this impact is not only limited to woman herself but also it spreads to the household as well. In the two stories compared, the serpents want the women to adhere to the agreements whose terms were unilaterally dictated by the serpents themselves. When the agreements are violated, the women are punished with death/the loss of the happy world. Geographical proximity and common believes explain the similarities. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Osmanlı Devleti’nin son zamanlarına ve Cumhuriyet’in kurulup kökleştiği çağa şahit olan çoğu aydın gibi medeniyet krizini ruhunda hisseder. Cumhuriyet’in bu huzursuz aydını, devam ederek değişmek, değişerek devam etmek gibi makul bir sentezle huzura ermeye çalışır. Zaman ve mekânın ruhu, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’ın kaleminden çıkan her satıra sinmiş durumdadır. Osmanlı hayat tezahürlerini işleyen Bursa’da Zaman şiiri, her bir köşesinde kültür sentezinin izleri görülen ve Tanpınar’ın üzerinde bıraktığı derin etkisiyle bilinen Bursa’ya yazılır. Tanpınar şiirini anlamak için zaman, mekân, bellek, tarih, rüya ve imgelem üzerine düşünmek gerekir. Bu kavramlar, Tanpınar’ın satırlarında, unutulmaya yüz tutan toplumsal kimliğe yapılan birer çağrı olarak yer alır. İmgesel olarak yapılanan belleğin, kolektif bir boyutu olduğu muhakkaktır. Bireysel ömrü aşan ve tarihselleşen kültürel bellek, hatırlama yolu ile geçmişi yeniden kurar. Tam da bu noktada bellek, unutmaya karşı zaman ve mekâna tutunur. Bu nedenle, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar zamana ve mekâna başka bir nazarla bakar. Zaman ve mekânın bellek ile olan etkileşiminin farkında olan şair, bu kavramlara simgesel bir değer yükler. Bu çalışmada, Bursa’da Zaman şiirinden yola çıkılarak Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’ın zaman ve mekân algısı gözden geçirilecek, eserlerini şekillendiren his ve düşünce dünyası tespit edilmeye çalışılacaktır.

There is a direct relationship between the biography and the work. While examining the language and subject of the works, it is also necessary to know the life of the author. Today, novelists and poets leave a lot of material about their biographies. As it is known, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar passed away on January 25, 1962. Among the manuscripts left by Tanpınar, there are new documents that will increase our current knowledge about his artistic understanding and biography. You will find some of this information and documents in the article below. As can be expected, the manuscripts we have were written in old writing. Tanpınar made a number of changes on the manuscripts in question. Sometimes sentences, sometimes words were canceled, new sentences or words were added. If we consider the wear and tear of the documents due to the years passed, it will be understood how difficult it is to read the existing manuscripts. While transferring the manuscripts to the new article, today's orthography is taken into consideration. Sentences, phrases or words crossed out by Tanpınar have been largely removed from the text. However, we did not remove some sentences that we found important in terms of the information they carried, although they were crossed out by Tanpınar. In the biography of Tanpınar, cities such as Kirkuk, Mosul, Ergani, Sinop, Siirt, Antalya where he was due to his father's duty and Erzurum, Konya and Ankara where he worked as a teacher have a special place. In addition, Istanbul and Bursa are two important cities in Tanpınar's life. In the following article, there is information about the cities where Tanpinar passed his childhood or where he was due to his duty. There are also several sources of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar poetics. The first of these is the ideas coming from Yahya Kemal. The second is his interest in Ahmet Haşim's poetry. There is information on both subjects in the drafts below. But the major influence on his poetics comes from the well-known poets of nineteenth-century French literature. Gerard de Nerval, Charles Baudelaire, Stephane Mallarme, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Valery are the names influenced by Tanpınar's views on art and poetry. Almost all of the artists we mentioned are names with whom we can find relationships between their lives and their works. Tanpınar is one of the names with whom we can find connections between his life and works, just like the artists he was influenced by. - Abstract
Aesthetic judgment arises when the artist receives aesthetic pleasure from an aesthetic object. In aesthetic judgment there is an indifferent relationship between the artist and the object. The artist firstly deals with the object of aesthetics. The artist who finds herself in the object describes her with adjectives such as good, sublime, beautiful or pleasing. The artist's aesthetic pleasure and taste judgment occurs as a result of a mental process. The aesthetic judgment is the complement of this mental process. Knowledge, accumulation and skills are needed to make aesthetic judgment. Hamdi Tanpınar's Poem "Bursa'da Zaman" is a work describing the process of transformation of aesthetic pleasure into aesthetic judgment. The source of aesthetic pleasure in poetry is Bursa. The external structure of the poem is aesthetic judgment which adds literary, philosophical and aesthetic value to it. In this sense, the aesthetic judgment corresponds to the knowledge, accumulation and experience of the poet. The poet, receives an aesthetic pleasure from Bursa. He, describes this pleasure in a judgment of taste. The main purpose of this study is to contribute to the studies done on this subject by explaining the process of emergence of art works in the mind of the artist in Bursa with the time poem sample. As a result of the study, it was determined that the "Bursa'da Zaman" poetry was written with aesthetic pleasure, taste and aesthetic judgment process in Bursa. As a result of the study, The result of the study is that: In "Bursa'da Zaman" poem symbolizes the aesthetic judgment of Tanpınar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Composition of literary texts-although not attracting much attention from the reader-is completed through a long and challenging process. Determining factors such as the artist's working style, character, resourcefulness, meticulousness and perfectionism define the length of the process as well. This long process certainly requires a great effort. Bringing the form of the poem to the desired consistency on one hand, and fusing the form with style and the style with the meaning on the other needs hard work. Tanpınar, maybe in part under his teacher Yahya Kemal's influence, is an artist who is extremely sensitive to and who spares no effort in completing and introducing a poem. Such sensitivity prolonged his poems' completion process. This is clearly indicated by the fact that although he intended to publish a book of poems in 1937, he was able to realize this intention only in 1961, and that it took more than six months to complete the composition process of the poem ‗Evening' covered in this essay. ‗Evening' is an important poem which Tanpınar himself stated that it can be taken as an example to assess his poetry. The poet, who is picky, and willing to wait for a long time to consider ‗done' a poem which he thinks is uncompleted, believed that his poetry did not attract due attention, and resented; however he did not refrain from saying that one day he will be turned to, for he knew the importance of what he did. Articles, books, book sections, theses etc. written about him show that Tanpınar, especially in recent years, has been a center of attention for researchers from every circle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The city is an indication of common life. History, tradition, culture and mentality are the basic elements that enrich this indicator in terms of meaning. Every city has its own spirit, and this spirit reappears at every moment with its aesthetic imagination. The social texture, harmony and historical heritage of the city reflect the collective consciousness of the past. The only way to freeze a certain time in a certain mold is to leave creative and permanent works. In this context, certain cities have always been attractive with a charming inspiration. Bursa is one of these cities. In this study, Lami Çelebi's "Bursa Şehrengizi" were compared with "Beş Şehir" of Tanpınar. All kinds of artistic, literary and scientific products and activities, which are obtained in terms of reflecting the change experiences of a society, can turn into very important resources for those interested in the subject, which they can interpret by concentrating on different angles. In this respect, literary works of novel type also provide very important literature and archive information in terms of monitoring and examining the change processes that Turkish society has experienced. In this article, from the perspective of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, who has closely witnessed the modernization efforts of Turkish society, which is also defined as attempts to change civilization, the effects and results of the current dynamics of change on social structure elements will be tried to be discussed under various titles by centered on the the novel " Time Regulation Institute". The questions to be answered in line with various comparisons and evaluations were formed as follows: How are institutions such as family, education, religion, politics, that make up society in sociological terms, handled and evaluated in the rhetoric of this novel? How is the functioning cycle of these institutions in the social structure given? How are the contexts in which religiosity is addressed within this scale of change? What are the effects and consequences of the current change on these institutional structures? In the research, it will be tried to make maximum use of the qualitative method's document analysis, literature review and comparison techniques., Bir toplumun yaşamış olduğu değişim tecrübelerini yansıtması açısından elde edilen her türden sanatsal, edebi ve bilimsel ürün ve etkinlikler, konunun ilgilileri açısından farklı açılara yoğunlaşarak yorumlayabilecekleri çok önemli kaynaklara dönüşebilmektedirler. Bu açıdan Türk toplumunun yaşamış olduğu değişim süreçlerinin izlenmesi ve incelenmesi açısından roman türü edebiyat eserleri de çok önemli bir literatür ve arşiv bilgisi sunmaktadır. Bu makalede medeniyet değiştirme girişimleri olarak da tanımlanan Türk toplumun modernleşme çabalarına yakından şahitlik etmiş olan Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’ın perspektifinden mevcut değişim dinamiklerinin, sosyal yapı unsurlarına olan etki ve sonuçları “Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü” romanı merkeze alınarak çeşitli başlıklar altında ele alınmaya çalışılacaktır. In Western Europe, the modernization movement that has developed in the aftermath of the revolutionary ideas of the age of Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution has officially started with The Edict of Tanzimat (Ottoman Empire) in Turkish society, and it has continued in the Republic of Turkey. With the modernism, which was defined as the transition process from the old to the new and began to take its place in the literature as a concept in the 19th century, the authors modernized the literary narrative while they were criticizing this transformation that they were in. Modernization debates dating to the present day take an important place in Turkish literature, especially in the works of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar. Thanks to Tanpınar, one of the important values of Turkish literature, an important section of the process of adaptation of the Turkish nation to modernism is witnessed. Austrian Thomas Bernhard, one of the German-language authors, wrote his works at a time when Western Europe was about to overcome the impact of the war, and in his works he - just like Tanpinar - critically treated the renewal process unfolding from individuals to society. In this study which is written based on the methods of comparative literature science, modernism was analyzed from the perspective of Tanpınar and Bernhard, with the purpose of detecting the similarities and differences between both authors.

Onun şiir ve tiyatrolarındaki yenilikçi tavrı, kendisinden sonra gelenler üzerinde derin izler bırakır. Yazarın şiir ve tiyatrolarında Batılı tarzda yazmasının yanında, yazılarındaki düzensizlik, bazı aydınların eleştirilerine yol açar. Edebiyatımızda Hâmit’i farklı bakışlarla değerlendiren aydınlarımız göze çarpar. Nazım Hikmet, Asım Bezirci, Nurullah Ataç ile Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’ın Hâmit’e bakışları birçok benzerlik ve karşıtlık içerir. Nazım Hikmet’in “Putları Yıkıyoruz” yazı dizisi hem bir eleştiri hem de bir algıyı değiştirmeye yöneliktir. 1929 yılında yazılan yazıların ilki Hâmit’in olumlu olan toplumsal algısını olumsuz yönde yıkma girişimidir. Eleştirmenlikten ziyade şairliği ön plana çıkan Nazım Hikmet’in bu yazısı Hâmit ile ilgili eleştiri çalışmalarında ön sırayı alır. Tanpınar’ın Hâmit’e yönelik eleştirilerinde ise Hâmit’in şairliği ve oyun yazarlığını değerlendirme çabası görülür. Tanpınar, her ne kadar Hâmit’in edebi yönüne nesnel ifadelerle yaklaşmışsa da onun dil kullanımını ve düzensizliğini eleştirir. Ataç’ın Hâmit’e yönelik eleştirisine bakıldığında aşağılayıcı ve alaycı bir tutum görülür. Onun bu bakışı Asım Bezirci’de görülmez. Bezirci’nin Hâmit’i bütün yönleriyle ele alıp aynı zamanda olumlu değerlendirmeleri şaire yönelik objektif bir yaklaşımda bulunduğunu gösterir. Eleştirmenlerin Hâmit’e yönelik değişik değerlendirmeleri farklı bir bakışı ortaya koyar., Hâmit, who is one of the writers of the Tanzimat literature II, follows the traces of Şinasi and Namık Kemal and writes works under the influence of the West. The poet comes to the fore especially with the themes such death, self and nature in his poems, his innovative attitude in poetry and dramas leaves deep traces on his successors. Both the author's writing of poems and dramas in Western-style and the irregularity of his writings lead to criticism of some intellectuals. In our literature, there are intellectuals who evaluate Hâmit with different views. Nazım Hikmet, Asım Bezirci, Nurullah Ataç and Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's views on Hâmit have many similarities and contrasts. Nazım Hikmet's article series '' Putları Yıkıyoruz” is aimed both at criticism and to change a perception. The first of these article written in 1929 was an attempt to destroy the positive social perception of Hamit. Nazım Hikmet, who emphasized poetry rather than criticism, takes the first place in the criticism studies about Hamit. What is seen from Tanpınar's criticism on Hâmit is an attempt to evaluate Hâmit's poetry and playwriting. Although Tanpınar approaches Hâmit's literary aspect with objective expressions, he criticizes his use of language and disorder. When Ataç's critique of Hâmit is examined, a humiliating and cynical attitude is observed. Bezirci's approach to Hâmit in all its aspects, as well as his positive evaluations, shows that he takes an objective approach to the poet. The critics' different evaluations of Hâmit reveal a different perspective.

The novel named as Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü, published as a book by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar at a time close to his death, comes at the beginning of the works among the ones which received the most various appreciation in Turkish literature. The reasons of different appreciations and perspectives made for this work arise from the complexity of the work. Involvement of many provisions, motifs and symbols and their ingenious use make the understanding and interpretation of the work difficult. Within this difficulty, there are roles of architecture, music, fine arts, bureaucracy, spiritualism, dreams, psychoanalysis, time/hours, sciences (alchemy, history, literature), East-West culture, religion and superstitions issues, all of which are used in a different language/stylistic writing styles in this work that are not so familiar within Turkish literature. This language and style are subject to different evaluations by researchers. When the Institute of Setting Up Watches novel is evaluated, different narrative techniques and concepts such as "satire" (criticism / satire / criticism), "humor", "humor" (funny), "grotesque", "game", "absurd" (nonsensical / ridiculous), "allegory", "irony" are utilized. Irony is a concept lately discovered in Turkish literature. When we look at the studies about irony, it is seen that there was no or little irony if any before 1990 even a few words related with irony were just seen in some articles. After 1990, the quick increase of the works on this concept (e.g., articles, master's theses and doctoral dissertations) is witnessed. Interestingly, the name of Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü is mostly mentioned for irony related evaluations. Is the Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü really an ironic-tongued work? In this study, the answer of the question will be sought as well as who and how evaluated the Institute of Setting Up the Watches will chronologically be presented from the time of the work written to now.

This article examines the relationship between trauma, memory and national identity in the context of modern Turkish literature. Since the end of the XIX century, Turkish literature has always been a privileged space for different writers and intellectuals to debate identity and cultural issues related to both nationalization and modernization. The traumatic results produced by the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and subsequently by the Kemalist reforms have emerged as central topics in the Turkish novel genre since its origins. A long-standing prevalent aesthetic approach in Turkey submitted the arts to social and political commitments. In the light of this, I will focus on Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s narrative works, and in particular on his second novel Huzur, in order to underline the deep philosophical and political reflection that makes this author probably the most sophisticated interpreter of the main traumas in which Turkish national identity is grounded. .

Yazar ve şairler, bu tekniği günlük ve anı gibi hikâye edici metinlerde sıklıkla kullanmaktadırlar. Dolayısıyla yansıtıcı düşüncenin edebiyat bilimiyle ilişkisi bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada günlüklerde yer alan yansıtıcı düşünceler tespit edilmektedir. Yazarlar, yansıtıcı düşüncelerle geçmişlerini sorgulamakta, pişmanlıklarını itiraf etmekte, hayatlarıyla ilgili yeni çıkarımlarda bulunmaktadır. Günlükler bu yönüyle yazarların biyografilerinde yer almayan önemli bilgileri içermektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, sanatçıların hayat tecrübelerinden yararlanmak ve onları farklı yönleriyle tanımaktır. Türk edebiyatında günlük türünde kaleme alınmış sınırlı sayıda eser bulunmaktadır. Eleştirmen yönleri ortak olan Nurullah Ataç, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Oktay Akbal ve Cemil Meriç’in günlükleri bunlar arasında önemli bir yere sahiptir. Yazarlar, günlüklerinde samimi duygularla geçmişlerini sorgulamakta, öz eleştiri yapmakta ve pişmanlıklarını dile getirmektedirler. Çalışmadan çıkan ortak sonuca göre yazarlar, geçmişlerini sorguladıkça ve öz eleştiri yaptıkça yeni ve doğru bilgilere ulaşmaktadırlar. Günlüklerdeki yansıtıcı düşünceler, ayrıca yazarları farklı yönleriyle tanıma fırsatı vermektedir. Reflective thinking is basically a concept related to educational sciences and is used as a teaching technique. With this technique, it is ensured that people evaluate what they do, learn from their evaluations, take responsibility and make self-criticism. Authors and poets often use this technique in narrative texts such as dairly and reminiscence. Therefore, reflective thinking has a relationship with the science of literature. In this study, reflective thoughts in the diaries are determined. The authors question their past with reflective thoughts, confess their regrets and make new inferences about their lives. Diaries in this respect contain important information not included in the biographies of the authors. The purpose of this study is to take advantage of the life experiences of the artists and to know them from different aspects. In Turkish literature, there are a limited number of works written in daily genre. The diaries of Nurullah Ataç, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Oktay Akbal and Cemil Meriç, whose critic aspects are common, have an important place among them. The authors question their past in their diaries with sincere feelings, make self-criticism and express their regrets. According to the common result of the study, the authors reach new and accurate information as they question their past and make self-criticism. Reflective thoughts in the diaries also give the opportunity to get to know the authors from different aspects.

This article provides a general outline of the language policy followed by European organizations in order to propose a definition of terms such as plurilingualism, multilingualism, bilingualism and consideration of multilingualism peculiarities and benefits either for the single person or communities. The literature has considered multilingualism linked to cognitive, psychological, cultural, educational, social and economic benefits. It is also described in terms of plurilingual and intercultural competence in the Common European Framework, which is the most important European guideline on learning and teaching languages. Plurilingual and intercultural competence as a plural repertoire of language and cultural transversal knowledge, competences and resources, is the aim of plurilingual and intercultural education: focus is on personal development, learners' needs, linguistic and intercultural abilities in order to develop not a "native speaker" but an "intercultural speaker". 06.03.2018 tarihli ve 30352 sayılı Resmi Gazetede yayımlanan “Yükseköğretim Kanunu İle Bazı Kanun Ve Kanun Hükmünde Kararnamelerde Değişiklik Yapılması Hakkında Kanun” ile 18.06.2018 tarihli “Lisansüstü Tezlerin Elektronik Ortamda Toplanması, Düzenlenmesi ve Erişime Açılmasına İlişkin Yönerge” gereğince tam metin erişime açılmıştır. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, yaşadığı toplumun sorunlarını iyi gözlemlemiş ve bu sorunları çeşitli bakış açıları üzerinden değerlendirebilmiş çok yönlü bir yazardır. Tanpınar, hem Türk insanının hem de dâhil olduğu Türk toplumunun problemleriyle kendisini meşgul eder. Bu problemlerin başında "modernleşme" gelir. 15. yüzyıldan itibaren Batı'da yaşanan gelişmelerle Batı kendi modernliğini oluşturur. Bu durum ise Osmanlı Devleti'nin Batı'daki gelişmelere adapte olmaya çalışmasını zorunlu kılar. Osmanlı Devri'nden Cumhuriyet Devri'ne geçiş sürecinde ikilikler arasında bocalayan bireyler, modernleşme toplumunu oluşturur. "Eski" ile "yeni" arasında sıkışıp kalan Türk toplumu, modernleşmenin beraberinde getirdiği "yenilik" probleminin sonucunda çeşitli arayışların peşine düşer. Türkiye'nin modernleşme sürecinde yaşadığı bunalımlar, yozluklar ve ikilikler Tanpınar'ın bilhassa üzerinde durduğu konulardır. Bu açıdan Tanpınar yalnızca toplumunun değil, kendisinin de arada kalmışlığını eserlerine yansıtır. Yanlış anlaşılan modernleşme, Doğu ve Batı arasında kalmış olan bireyler üzerinden Türkiye'de trajik bir durumu ortaya çıkarır. Tanpınar, eserlerinde bu trajediyi ironik bir yöntem kullanarak kurgular. Tanpınar romanlarında modernleşme sorunu, olay ve kişiler üzerinden okuyucuya "ironi" ile aktarılır. İroni, bir eleştiri yolu veya Tanpınar'ın kendini ifade etme biçimi olarak okunabilir. Öte yandan Tanpınar'ın hayatında da ironinin izleri bulunur. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar is a multi-faceted writer who has observed the problems of his society and has been able to evaluate these problems from various perspectives. Tanpinar is busy with the problems of both the Turkish people and the Turkish society in which he is involved. "Modernization" comes at the beginning of these problems. The West occurs its own modernity with developments in the West as from the fifteenth century. This situation obliges the Ottoman state to try to adapt to the developments in the West. Individuals, who were among the dualities during the transition from Ottoman period to Republican period, formed the modernization society. Turkish society, stuck between "old" and "new", pursues various searches as a result of the "innovation" problem brought by modernization. The crises, decadences and dilemmas that Turkey experienced during the modernization process are the issues that Tanpinar focuses on. In this respect, Tanpinar reflects not only his society, but also his paradox with his works. Misunderstood modernisation reveals a tragic situation in Turkey over individuals who have remained between the East and the West. Tanpinar, in his works, tries to construct this tragedy by using an ironic method. The problem of modernization in Tanpinar novels is conveyed to the reader through "irony". Irony can be read as a way of criticism or Tanpinar's way of expressing himself. On the other hand, there are traces of irony in Tanpinar's life. It can be said that the ironic temperament met in his letters and works is integrated with Tanpinar's character. The scope of this thesis is the irony that manifests itself in the novels of Tanpinar during the modernization process of Turkey. This study aims to determine Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar's position in the modernization process by providing an overview of Turkey's modernization process and to examine the reflections of the modernization irony in the novels of Tanpinar. Aile fertleri, çocukluğunun geçtiği çevreler, devam ettiği eğitim ortamları ve nihayet öğretmen-akademisyen olarak bulunduğu kurumlar; Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar‟ın fıtrî hassasiyetiyle birleşerek derin musiki birikimine ve kültürüne zemin hazırlamıştır. Muhtelif yazılarında bu engin musiki birikimini yansıtan Tanpınar, özellikle Huzur romanını bu kültür ve donanımı göstermeye uygun bir enstrüman hâlinde kurgulamıştır. Çalışmada Tanpınar‟ı besleyen musiki kültürünün kaynakları ve bunun romana yansıması gösterilmeye çalışılmış; ayrıca musiki bahsi, klasik Türk musikisi, Türk halk musikisi ve Batı musikisi şeklinde tasnife tâbi tutularak üç ayrı bölümde değerlendirilmiştir. Klasik Türk musikisi ve Türk halk musikisi bahsi, şahıs kadrosunun bu musikilerle ilgileri ve bilgileri bakımından alt başlıklara ayrılmıştır. Klasik Batı musikisiyle ilişkileri bakımından şahıs kadrosunun darlığı ve romanda Batı musikisine diğerlerine nazaran daha az yer verilmesi, bu bölümde alt başlık açmayı gereksiz kılmıştır. Ayrıca çalışmada romandaki musiki literatürüne ve terminolojisine dair ayrıntılar üzerinde durulmuştur. Bahsi geçen musikişinaslar, bestekârlar, sanatkârlar, şahıs kadrosuna tesiri olan fikir ve bilim insanları, makamlar ve sair ilgili maddeler, dipnotlar hâlinde gösterilmiş; eserler ise metin içerisinde tanıtılmaya ve açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Romanın kurgusundan, dizgisinden ve baskısından kaynaklanan birtakım hataların sonraki diğer bütün baskılarda müteselsilen devam ettiği görülmüş ve bu konudaki bilgilerin çalışmaya ilave edilmesine gerek görülmüştür. Tanpınar, Huzur‟un yayımlanmasına uzanan zihnî ve fikrî serüveni, romanın neşrinden sonra verdiği iki mülakatta açıklamıştır. Huzur‟u okuma kılavuzu niteliğindeki bu mülakatlar da çalışmada ek hâlinde verilmiştir., His family members, his childhood environments, the educational environments in which he attended and finally the institutions he worked as a teacher and an academician, all combined with the physical sensitivity of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar and prepared the ground for his deep musical accumulation and culture. Tanpınar, reflecting this vast accumulation of music in his various writings, has especially written the novel Huzur in the relevant form for demonstrating this culture and background. The sources of music culture that feeds Tanpınar and its reflection on the novel are tried to be reflected, and thus, the subject of music, classical Turkish music, Turkish folk music and Western music have been classified and evaluated into three different sections in this study. The subjects of classical Turkish music and Turkish folk music are divided into subheadings in terms of their relevance and knowledge of the characters. The shortage of the characters in terms of their relation with classical Western music and the fact that the Western music in the novel was given less space compared to the others made it unnecessary to open the subheading in this section. In addition, the study focuses on the details of literature and terminology of music in the novel. The related musicians, composers, craftsmen, academicians and scientists who have an influence on the individual characters, techniques and other relevant articles, have been shown in the footnotes; musical works, however, have been introduced and evaluated in the study. It has been seen that various errors, arising from the fiction, string and edition of the novel, have been repeated in all continuing printings, thus, the information on this subject have been added to the study. Tanpınar explained the intellectual and ideological adventure of the publication of Huzur in two interviews after the publication of the novel. These interviews which seem to be a guide to read the novel have been included as supplement in the study.

Nihilism which means the loss of the importance of values supports the idea that the man should use the innate instincts which he has. Only through this way will man be able to return to his origin getting rid of the ethical values and authorities of the society. Nihilism, expressing the way of thought in which the emotions of meaninglessness, emptiness and nonbeing is a life-style which accompanies a spiritual condition which appears when the values and ideals people depend on don’t perform their duties.Nihilism which first was used in Germany the first time was pointed out in the middle of the 19th century in Russia, is a philosophical approach which became widespread with Schopenhauer and finally became systemized with Nietzsche. When the faith of the authors who were influenced by Positivism was scattered they found themselves in Nihilism which they saw as a shelter. Turgenyev in Russian Literature and Tanpınar in Turkish literature utilizes such characters in their novels.In this study, the experiences of individuals who suffer similar problems with the society have been emphasized. Bazarov and Suat who differ in personality, view of world and behaviors are hostile to both themselves and others with the influence of Nihilism. They make the novel a nightmare with their atheistical and rebellious feature. They prefer the matter instead of spirit, absence instead of existence. First the description of Nihilism, its features and its origin has been mentioned then some information about Babalar ve Oğullar by Turgenyev and the novel Huzur by Tanpınar and their eras have been given. The Nihilist features of Bazarov and Suat in these novels have been gathered under specific titles, similar and differences have been pointed out. In the conclusion part, general overview of the study has been made. Değerlerin önemini kaybetmesi anlamına gelen Nihilizm, insanın doğuştan getirdiği içgüdülerini kullanması gerektiğini savunur. İnsan ancak bu yolla Tanrı’dan, toplumun ahlâksal değerlerinden ve otoritelerden kurtulup özüne dönebilecektir. Anlamsızlık, boşluk ve hiçlik duygularının telkin edildiği bir düşünme biçimini ifade eden Nihilizm, insanların bağlı kaldıkları değer ve ideallerin işlevlerini yerine getirmediklerinde ortaya çıkan bir ruh durumuna eşlik eden bir yaşama biçimidir.İlk defa Almanya’da kullanılan Nihilizm; 19. yüzyıl ortalarında Rusya’da dikkat çekilmiş, Schopenhauer’la yaygınlaşmış ve son olarak Nietzsche’yle sistemleşmiş felsefî bir yaklaşımdır. Bu yüzyılda Pozitivizm’in etkisinde kalan yazarlar, dine karşı inançları sarsılınca kendilerini bir sığınak olarak gördükleri Nihilizm’in kucağına atarlar. Rus edebiyatında Turgenyev, Türk edebiyatında ise Tanpınar romanlarında bu türden karakterlere yer verirler.Bu çalışmada, toplum ile benzer problemler yaşayan bireylerin yaşadıkları üzerinde durulmuştur. Kişiliği, dünya görüşü ve davranışlarıyla romandaki diğer karakterlerden farklılık gösteren Bazarov ve Suat, Nihilizm’in etkisiyle hem kendilerine hem de başkalarına düşmandırlar. Tanrıtanımazlığı ve isyankârlığıyla romanı bir kâbusa dönüştürürler. Ruh yerine maddeyi, varlık yerine yokluğu tercih ederler. Önce Nihilizm’in tarifi, özellikleri ve ortaya çıkışından bahsedilmiş sonra Turgenyev’in Babalar ve Oğullar romanı ile Tanpınar’ın Huzur romanı ve dönemleri hakkında bilgiler verilmiştir. Bu romanlardaki Bazarov ve Suat’ın Nihilist özellikleri belli başlıklar altında toplanmış, bu karakterlerin benzer ve farklılıklarına dikkat çekilmiştir. Sonuç bölümünde ise çalışmanın genel bir değerlendirilmesi yapılmıştır.

As a human, artist, member of the public, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, interpreted the death in his own way and reflected these acquisitions to his works. The death, for Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, is a philosophic problematic that shows tragic sides of his life and influences deeply his ideas. In the works of the artist, one of the main conflict points is to want/look for immortality by his works, the past, society and culture despite his awareness of being mortal with his soul. When the extreme values formed this conflict are examined as life and death, it will be seen that Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar is “on the brink of himself.” Especially when the diaries of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar are examined, it’s seen that death/being mortal and immortality is one of the most important issues underlying his action of creating/giving a work. In the face of such a situation, Tanpınar, uses inevitably images related to death at the level of conscious or subconscious. Besides this sense of death reflected by him, it becomes possible to discover his aspects are unduly attached to life. It’s understood that Tanpınar worried distinctly about death in the last years of his life. At the heart of this concern, it is possible to see the results of the duality created by him. In his life defined as the out, he is not the person actually wants to be and conflicts with “him” fictionalized by him in his own inner world. In this article, it will be insisted on the dilemma of death and life creates the tragedy of Tanpınar as the expression of this conflict in his own inner world. In addition, underlying opinions of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar about the concept of “death”, it will be tried to bring a different perspective to the reflection of the concept in question on his works. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar bir insan, sanatçı, toplum adamı olarak ölümü kendisince yorumlamış ve bu edinimlerini eserlerine yansıtmıştır. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’da ölüm, hayatının trajik yanlarını ortaya koyan, onun düşüncelerini derinden etkileyen felsefî bir sorunsaldır. Ruhuyla ölümlü oluşunun farkındalığı, buna rağmen eserleriyle, maziyle, toplumla ve kültürle ölümsüzlüğü isteyişi/arayışı sanatçının eserlerindeki temel çatışma noktalarından birisini oluşturur. Bu çatışmayı yaratan uç değerler yaşam ve ölüm olarak ele alındığında, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar'ı kendi "eşiğinde" bulmak mümkün olacaktır. Tanpınar’ın özellikle günlükleri incelendiğinde görülür ki ölüm/ölümlü olma, ölümsüzlük onun yaratma/eser verme eyleminin altında yatan en önemli öğelerden birisidir. Böyle bir durum karşısında Tanpınar, eserlerinde kaçınılmaz olarak bilinç veya bilinçaltı düzeyinde ölüme dair imgeler kullanmaktadır. Yansıttığı bu ölüm anlayışının yanında onun hayata sıkı sıkıya bağlı yanlarını da keşfetmek mümkün hâle gelmektedir. Tanpınar’ın yaşamının son yıllarında ölüm karşısında belirgin bir kaygı duyduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Bu kaygının temelinde onun kendi içinde oluşturduğu ikiliğin sonuçlarını görmek mümkündür. O, dış olarak tanımladığı yaşamında, aslında olmak istediği kişi değildir ve iç dünyasında kurguladığı ben’inin çatışmasını yaşamaktadır. Bu makalede, kendi içinde yaşadığı bu çatışmanın dışa vurumu olarak Tanpınar’ın trajedisini oluşturan ölüm ve yaşam ikilemi üzerinde durulacaktır. Ayrıca, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’ın “ölüm” kavramı üzerindeki düşünceleri temelinde söz konusu kavramın eserlerine yansıyışına farklı bir bakış açısı getirilmeye çalışılacaktır.

In Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s novel called Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü, which was released in 1962, the process of modernisation of Turkish society has been written in an ironic manner. The novel's plot is based on memories of protagonist Hayri İrdal. In this work of art concepts such as history, economics, bureaucracy, science, philosophy, superstition, family, female, East vs. West have been considered in the "old-new" mentality and it’s been pointed out that the fundamental changes behind these took place very rapidly. In the novel, the last period of the Ottoman Empire and the first half period of the Republic have been constructed and during this time the change in the family structure is demonstrated. The author presents the developments or changes in the family institution parallel to the developments in the society where the family is connected to and plays the role of its core. However, understanding the differences between families belonging to different generations and social developments, trends are being linked sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly. As known, the following process can take place in society: an example of any change in the social structure or an old development, then these conditions preparing this development with some factors, after that the trend towards the new influenced by the same conditions and then the new replacing the old can happen. It could be said that kind of process takes place in Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü. In the novel, the Ottoman Turkish family structures have been put into three different groups: first the traditional families, then the group experiencing the pressure of traditional although being devoted to it and last the ones who are in the transition period from old to new or the reflector of the modern families. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’ın 1962 yılında yayımlanan Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü adlı romanında, Türk toplumunun modernleşme süreci ironik bir tutumla kaleme alınmıştır. Romanın olay örgüsü, başkahraman Hayri İrdal’ın hatıralarına dayanır. Eserde tarih, ekonomi, bürokrasi, bilim, felsefe, hurafe, aile, kadın, Doğu, Batı vb. kavramlar, “eski-yeni” zihniyeti çerçevesinde ele alınmış, bu kavramların art alanlarında köklü değişmelerin çok süratli bir şekilde yaşandığına işaret edilmiştir. Roman Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun son dönemi ile Cumhuriyet’in ilk yarısını kapsayan bir süreci kurgulamış, bu süreç içinde de aile yapısının nasıl değiştiği gözler önüne serilmiştir. Yazar aile kurumundaki gelişmeleri veya değişmeleri, ailenin bağlı bulunduğu ve içinde bir çekirdek rolü üstlendiği toplumdaki gelişmelere paralel bir şekilde almıştır. Yine farklı nesillere mensup aileler arasındaki farklı anlayış ve eğilimleri toplumsal gelişmelerle bazen doğrudan, bazen de dolaylı olarak ilintilediği görülmektedir. Bilindiği gibi, toplumsal yapıdaki her gelişmenin yahut da değişmenin eski bir örneği, bu örneğin bazı etkenlerle yeniyi hazırlayan koşulları, yine bu koşulların etkisi ile yeniye doğru gelişen eğilim ve yeninin, eskinin yerini alması süreci söz konusudur. Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü’nde de böyle bir sürecin varlığından söz edilebilir. Romanda bu süreç içinde Osmanlı Türk ailesinin; geleneksel yapıya sahip olanlar, eskiye bağlı ama aynı zamanda eskinin baskısını yaşayan, bu bakımdan da yeniye geçiş konumunda bulunanlar ile yeninin, modernin yansıtıcısı aileler şeklinde üç grupta ele alındığını söylemek mümkündür.

Tanpınar developed a new historiography of literature, adding different methods to his literary resaurchs. We find hot and aesthetical style when read the History of Turkish Litertature of XIX. Century which exceeding the six hundred pages. With this speciality Tanpınar it’s the first time brought in history of litertature which have both scientific and artistic value to our literature. He look the events to be an artificer not as a critic. Tanpınar both a poet and artificer. He set up sentences short but enlighten the all situation after long critiques. Tanpınar have both attractive and sheeny way of speaking. He is an aesthete before all else and for this reason he care to the picturesque at critics and etudes. Tanpınar, edebî incelemelerinde farklı metotları kullanarak yepyeni bir edebiyat tarihçiliği geliştirmiştir. Özellikle XIX. Asır Türk Edebiyatı Tarihi’ni okuduğumuzda, bir sanat eserindeki sıcak ve estetik havayı buluruz. Bu özelliği ile Tanpınar, edebiyatımıza ilk kez bilimsel değeri yanında sanat ve estetik değeri üstün bir edebiyat tarihi kazandırmıştır. O, olaylara bir tenkitçi gözüyle değil bir sanatçı gözüyle bakmıştır. Tanpınar, hem bir şair hem de bir sanatkârdır. O, bazen uzun tahlillerden sonra kısa, fakat bütün bir manzarayı aydınlatan cümleler kurmuştur. Tanpınar’da renkli ve pırıltılı bir deyiş vardır. O, her şeyden evvel bir estettir ve bu nedenle tahlillerinde ve etütlerinde pitoreske önem vermiştir.

Intertextual relations are quite important in analyzing both technique and sense of the text. They display the sources of influence of the author’s universe and contribute to better understanding the text. Determining intertextual relations in the novels of Tanpınar enables evaluation of their effect on his novel technique besides showing his fields of interest and the issues by which he was influenced and wanted to exhibit. This article is based on the analysis of these relations on his four novels. Metinlerarası ilişkiler, gerek roman tekniğinin gerekse metnin anlamının incelenmesinde büyük önem taşır. Yazarın evrenindeki etki kaynaklarını gösterir ve metnin daha iyi anlaşılmasına katkıda bulunur. Tanpınar’ın romanlarında metinlerarası ilişkilerin tespit edilmesi, onun etkilendiği, sergilemek istediği, ilgi duyduğu alanların romanda ne şekilde yer bulduğunu göstermenin yanı sıra, bunun roman tekniğine olan etkisinin değerlendirilebilmesine de imkân tanır. In the works of Proust and Tanpınar, the traces of the art of drawing and painting are retlected in the presentation of every element. So me of their characters are paintists and some are interested in art and have the culture of it. Many artistscontributed Proust and Tanpınar to form aesthetics in the description of their portraits. The writers in question, as in the description of landscapes, use multidimension to represent portraits because of the different perspectives and the reflection of visionary dimension. As a conclusion of these techniques, Proust and Tanpınar introduced not only one - known portrait but also many sided ones of a single character, out of their impressions to the readers.

İlk bölümde Tanpınar'ı diğer aydın ve yazarlardan farklı kılan estet kimliği; yazarın estetik biçime ve edebiyata nasıl bir toplumsal-siyasal eleştiri gücü yüklediğini anlamak için modernizm anlayışını, Tanzimat'ın ilanıyla toplumda baş gösteren benlik yırtılmalarına yaklaşımını işledik. Bunun yanında Fransız filozof Henri Bergson'un zaman-süre felsefesini inceledikten sonra, medeniyet anlayışına yansıması sorgulanmıştır. İkinci başlıkta karakter, dönüşüm kavramlarının edebiyat ve psikolojideki karşılıklarına değinip Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü romanındaki işlenme biçimini ele aldık. Regarding both the social agitations of his life-time period and the missions that a man of letters undertakes, the existence of a mind that always works is seen. This mind leads to the constitution of the works which lets versatile reading. The thing that makes Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar from his contemporary intellectuals and authors is that he mentioned a society's religious life, civilization perception, national components and their positioning against the turmoil by centring the problem of civilization in his entire creations. En dialoguant, dans Istanbul. Souvenirs d'une ville (trad. fr. Gallimard, 2007), avec des écrivains européens du XIXe siècle, le romancier turc Orhan Pamuk nous oblige à repenser la question de l'« orientalisme », en portant sur ces derniers un regard « oriental », d'ailleurs médiatisé par deux autres écrivains turcs, Yahya Kemal et Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar. Mais Pamuk, comme ces derniers, est aussi nourri de culture occidentale, et il affirme lui-même que c'est en lisant les récits des voyageurs français ayant séjourné à Constantinople qu'il a pris conscience du caractère profondément multiculturel de « sa » ville. Loin d'avoir « méconnu » la capitale ottomane, Nerval, Gautier et Flaubert sont pour Pamuk les dépositaires d'une mémoire partagée, que ce soit à travers le sentiment de la mélancolie, l'attrait pour les marges urbaines, ou encore la prise en compte d'une certaine instabilité identitaire.
