For decades, synchrotron radiation facilities have provided powerful research tools for a variety of photon sciences, industrial use, and other purposes. In [[9]], we discussed the suppression of emittance variation in extremely low emittance light sources and demonstrated that the emittance variation could be reduced to less than 1% and passively maintained by carefully optimizing the operating condition of insertion devices. The electron energy was optimized at 6 GeV to reduce the natural electron emittance, while covering the same range of X-rays with shorter period undulators. There is no such magnet for NanoTerasu and, more importantly, the LGB magnets are expected to be made using a permanent magnet for SPring-8-II that does not exist for NanoTerasu. Influence of solvents, conversion, degree of polymerization, and temperature on polymerization rate and polymer tacticity was studied in radical polymerization of captodative-substituted ethyl 2-acetoxyacrylate. It was demonstrated that the polymerization rate varied with solvents and increased with increasing molar volume of solvents and decreasing solubility of monomer. Monomer concentration also affected the polymer yield, and dilution by solvent reduced the yield. In addition, polymer tacticity also varied with solvents, degree of polymerization, temperature, and monomer-to-polymer conversion. In the polymerization in benzene at 30 °C, the isotacticity (mm) decreased significantly with the progress of polymerization, and the syndiotacticity (r) of the polymer momentary obtained was expected to increase from 5% at the beginning to ca.60% at the polymer yield of 15%. At higher temperature (100 °C), however, the isotacticity (mm) increased during the polymerization in anisole, and the isotacticity (m) was suggested to be completely attained for the polymer obtained momentarily at the polymer yield of ca.75%. A compact HOM-damping beam-accelerating rf cavity was developed to mitigate coupled-bunch instabilities in electron storage rings. This cavity operates in the TM020 mode, characterized by a high Q -value and a high shunt impedance. The new HOM-damping mechanism leverages the unique field distributions of the TM020 mode, allowing direct embedding of rf absorbing materials into the cavity body. This novel structure underwent validation through rf simulations and measurements using a model cavity resonating at 508.58 MHz in the TM020 mode with a shunt impedance of 6.8 MΩ and designed to have HOM impedances of less than 0.1 MΩ longitudinally and 0.5 MΩ/m transversely. We also fabricated and tested a prototype cavity, showcasing its HOM-damping efficacy and high-power functionality at 120 kW, generating an accelerating voltage of 900 kV. The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami are one of the most catastrophic natural disasters that took place in Japan. The disaster caused widespread destruction to the estuarine and coastal areas along the northeastern region of Japan. The Abukuma River mouth, among many estuaries in Miyagi Prefecture, suffered major damage from the tsunami in which the sand spit and the sand terrace were severely eroded. The present study aims to provide a better comprehension of the morphology of the Abukuma River mouth within a decade after the 2011 tsunami based on the collected datasets of imagery and offshore bathymetry surveys. The consecutive changes of the sand terrace and sand spit indicate their connection influencing the morphological recovery in the Abukuma River mouth. About a year after the tsunami, the sand terrace re-appeared by a flood event and became the sediment source to recover the sand spit under the intrusion process. When the sand spit almost recovered and achieved a stable configuration, the sediment from the sand terrace into the river was restricted. As a result, more sediment from the sand terrace was expected to be transported to the downdrift area under the dominant wave condition in the Abukuma River mouth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In most of the current conventional tsunami numerical models, the steady flow friction law has been widely used to access the tsunami-induced bottom shear stress. However, according to our previous theoretical investigation showed that in almost the entire model domain from the tsunami source to the nearshore area, the tsunami-induced bottom boundary layer behaves like a wave boundary layer, rather than a quasi-steady flow boundary layer. The present study aims to develop a numerical method for tsunami simulation that elaborates a wave friction factor by implementing a correction method proposed by authors' previous work into the conventional 1D shallow water equation. As a result, the new method provides similar results to the original Manning method regarding the water level and the tsunami-induced velocity. However, the bottom shear stress estimated by the new method is higher than that from the Manning method over the entire computational domain. Because the work function (WF) of the thermionic cathode of an electron gun is the primary factor for determining emission current density, the precise monitoring of the WF in actual operational conditions under high temperatures is essential for tracking the status of the cathode surface. We adjusted a theoretical model of quantum efficiency under high temperatures as proposed by R. H. Fowler to include the final energy state in the photoexcitation process. This modification is necessary for estimating the WF precisely with the measurement results obtained by photoelectron yield spectroscopy using a tunable pulsed laser in the wavelength range from 410 to 709 nm. As the first step of the investigation, we conducted WF measurements of a single-crystal CeB6 cathode, which is employed for the SACLA x-ray free-electron laser. The WF of the unused fresh CeB6 was 2.44 ± 0.02 eV at a high temperature of 836 °C. Our future plans for WF measurements are also discussed below. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a detailed investigation on unsteady effects in bottom boundary layer beneath a tsunami. In numerical simulation of tsunami, bottom shear stress has commonly been evaluated by using steady flow friction laws such as Manning equation, simply assuming that long-period wave motion satisfies quasi-steady flow conditions. However, the present study found that the behavior of tsunami-induced bottom boundary layer has an unsteady characteristics and acts similar to that induced by wind-generated waves even under long-period wave motion. As a result, bottom shear stress under tsunami is much larger than the estimation using steady friction coefficient due to a steep velocity gradient in the bottom boundary layer. Surprisingly, the steady flow friction law is not valid in almost the entire computational domain, from the source area to shallow region. This result highly coincides with the field measurement data obtained by Lacy group during the 2010 Chilean Tsunami at the Monterey Bay mouth in U.S. A correction coefficient is proposed to take into account unsteady effects in the conventional estimation method using a steady friction factor; this approach is validated by comparing with numerical simulation results using k-ω turbulence model. In the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake Tsunami, run-up of the tsunami along rivers expanded the damaged area into more inland areas far from the coast. High water level in rivers was kept for more than several times of the wave period in the 2011 event, while more simple periodical oscillations of the water level superposed on the tidal motion was observed in the 2010 Chile Tsunami event. The difference of behaviors of tsunami in rivers was discussed with related to the magnitude of tsunami and river mouth morphology through two numerical experiments in this paper. In the first numerical experiments, the run-up of historical tsunamis was simulated along Kitakami River. It was found that the discharge of tsunami flow across the river mouth was proportional to third power of water depth if overflow of the sand spit occurred, and that caused unbalance of water volume coming into and going out from the river channel. Through the second numerical experiment with simple model bathymetry and sinusoidal waves, it was found that discharge during both tsunami run-up and run-down across river mouths is reduced by sand spits at the river mouths and the reduction effect is more significant during flow rushing into the rivers than that during return flow. The elongation of Cua Lo Inlet's updrift sand spit together with severe erosion of the downdrift bank is raising numerous social problems such as flood safety and land loss. In this study, a series of Landsat and Google Earth images were used to analyze and investigate the inlet recent morphological changes and evolution. Since 1970 the inlet has constantly migrated towards the sediment transport pathway, and its traveling distance has reached 1700 m. In order to quantitatively investigate such characteristics, the tip coordinates and the area of the sand spit updrift of the inlet were calculated. In particular, the area of the sand spit has increased remarkably, and the increasing rate is almost constant. Using this value, the rate of sand volume transported along the updrift sand spit by the waves was estimated and it is in good agreement with the longshore sediment transport rate of the surrounding beach. The Nha Trang beach, an embayed sandy beach located in the southeast of Vietnam, is a tropical touristic coastal environment that is being threat by persistent shoreline retreat. In order to investigate the processes underlying this erosive pattern, 1.5-years of video imagery, obtained from a local video system, was analyzed. Video products such as shoreline position and surf zone width (extracted from time-averaged images) were used to identify patterns of shoreline variability (using empirical orthogonal function – EOF) and investigate the link between the seasonal variations in the wave forcing and longshore sediment transport. Results indicate that shoreline retreat occurs essentially during the winter season, when energetic northeast monsoon waves dominate. The recovery phase (shoreline advance) was found to occur during the summer season, when milder south/southeast wind waves dominate. Shoreline variability was further investigated using EOF analysis and results show that the first mode, which explains 89% of the observed variance, corresponds to the seasonal longshore shoreline variations. This EOF mode was found to strongly related to the winter and summer monsoon seasons, thus reinforcing the role that seasonal changes in the wave climate play on the shoreline variations. Finally, the net of longshore sediment transport in Nha Trang beach was investigated using seasonal and monthly depth of closure (Dc) information, rather than a single fixed value of this parameter. The results highlight that the use of monthly or seasonal Dc values allow to capture the seasonal variations in the wave climate, thus providing more realistic patterns of sediment transport in this coastal area. The 2011 Great East Japan Tsunami caused severe morphological changes along the affected coastline on the northeast part of Japan. This study investigates the recovery of river mouths and breaching of sandy coast at the place used to be river mouth in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan after severe erosion induced by the tsunami through analyzing aerial photograph and investigating field data. After several years since the tsunami took place, the morphology of some river mouths has mostly recovered while others still have some damage. Results on the analysis of aerial photograph clearly indicate that the total length of sandy coast on both sides of river mouth plays important role in the recovery process. Moreover, the relevant phenomenon occurring during the morphological recovery process is also investigated. The findings demonstrated the intrusion of sand spit into river mouths due to the tsunami having scoured river mouth deeper than the depth of closure. Interestingly, the intrusion distance was found to be positively correlated with the width of river mouth. In addition, there is an important finding on the practical problem which is related to the intrusion upstream of sand spit. That intrusion shifts the boundary of fresh-sea water upstream, therefore external wave forces must be considered when implementing the design of river structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Radical polymerization of cyclic analogs of acrylates, ( S)- and ( R)-2-isopropyl-5-methylene-1,3-dioxolan-4-ones ( 1S and 1R), successfully afforded a functional polymer having the tacticity continuously controlled from 29% to ∼100% of meso triad ( mm) over a wide range of temperature only by changing the molar ratio of 1S/ 1R in feed. Plot of the number fractions of the triad versus diad of poly( 1) was in good agreement with the Bernoulli statistics. In the polymerization in chiral solvents having analogs structure of the monomers, the tacticity and specific rotation of the resulting polymer were specifically varied depending on the structure and concentration of the solvents. Model propagation reaction at dimeric radical calculated with density functional theory reproduced a methodical induction of the chirality to the main chain from the branched chiral monomeric unit, which supports the experimental expectations. It is remarkable that the ceiling temperature of 1 is tremendously high, for example, 193 °C in [ 1 ( ee = 72.6%)] = 0.05 mol/L, and the isospecific polymerization is maintained even at such a high temperature, which enabled the control of polymer tacticity over a wide range of temperature. ABSTRACT Reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) of biomass-based acrylates, ( S)- and ( R)-2-isopropyl-5-methylene-1,3-dioxolan-4-ones ( S-MiPDO and R-MiPDO), was successfully performed to produce a well-defined polymer with simultaneously controlled tacticity and molecular weight, and low dispersity ( Đ < 1.3). In particular, meso triad ( mm) of the polymer was continuously controlled as designed from 28.1% to about 100% by changing the molar ratio of S-MiPDO/ R-MiPDO in feed. In kinetic studies, the rate of RDRP was strongly influenced by the stereostructures of the propagating radical, and it was much lower in isospecific RDRP than atactic one in reversible chain transfer catalyzed polymerization (RTCP) in contrast to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) where the rate would not change regardless of the tacticity. Increase of molecular weight and low Đ of the polymer were also observed in reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of MiPDO. The 2011 Tohoku tsunami entered the Kitakami river and propagated there as a train of shock waves, recorded with a 1-min interval at water level stations at Fukuchi, Iino, and the weir 17.2 km from the mouth, where the bulk of the wave was reflected back. The records showed that each bore kept its shape and identity as it traveled a 10.9-km-path Fukuchi-Iino-weir-Iino. Shock handling based on the cross-river integrated classical shock conditions was applied to reconstruct the flow velocity time histories at the measurement sites, to estimate inflow into the river at each site, to evaluate the wave heights of incident and reflected tsunami bores near the weir, and to estimate propagation speed of the individual bores. Theoretical predictions are verified against the measurements. We discuss experiences of exercising the shock conditions with actual tsunami measurements in the Kitakami river, and test applicability of the shallow-water approximation for describing tsunami bores with heights ranging from 0.3 to 4 m in a river segment with a depth of 3-4 m. The tsunami propagation in the river as well as sediment transport is highly affected by the bed stress beneath the wave. Unfortunately, most numerical models use an empirical method such as Manning's n, which was developed for steady flow. A new method in numerical modelling to assess bed stress and sediment transport induced by wave is developed based on the boundary layer approach. The boundary layer has a significant effect on the bed stress under unsteady flow. Bed stress under unsteady flow may exhibit phase shift and sign change to the free stream velocity. Recently, Simultaneous Coupling Method (SCM) was developed and verified by combining Shallow Water Equation (SWE) and k-ω model. The simplicity of SWE was maintained while k-ω model was used to assess the bed stress from the boundary layer. The velocity from SWE is assumed as the free stream velocity, which is used as the boundary condition for k-ω. The calculated bed stress from k-ω is used in SWE to obtain water depth and velocity. In this study, SCM is further developed by simulating a tsunami wave propagation around the Kitakami River mouth and verified using a laboratory experiment. ABSTRACT Radical polymerization of lactic acid-based chiral and achiral methylene dioxolanones, a model for conformationally s-cis locked acrylate, was carried out with AIBN to demonstrate an isospecific free radical polymerization controlled by chirality and conformation of monomer. Polymerization of the dioxolanones proceeded smoothly without ring opening to give a polymer with moderate molecular weight and 100% of maximum isotacticity. ESR spectrum indicated a twisted conformation of the growing poly(methylene dioxolanone) radical in contrast to an acyclic analogous radical, suggesting a restriction of the free rotation around main chain CαCβ bond of the growing radical center. Chirality as well as the polarity and bulkiness of monomer affected the polymer tacticity, and chiral alkyl substituent would afford a high isotactic polymer, in which higher the enantiomeric excess of the monomer was, higher the isotacticity of the polymer was. While, achiral or polar substituents including dibenzyl and trichloromethyl groups would afford an atactic polymer. In addition, glass transition temperature ( Tg) of the resulting polymers was significantly high, ranging from 172.2 to 229.8 °C, and even for an isotactic polymer Tg was as high as 206.8 °C. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In March 2012, SACLA started user operations of the first compact X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) facility. SACLA has been routinely providing users with stable XFEL light over a wide photon energy range from 4 to 15 keV and an ultrafast pulse duration below 10 fs. The facility supports experimental activities in broad fields by offering high-quality X-ray optics and diagnostics, as well as reliable multiport charge-coupled-device detectors, with flexible experimental configurations. A two-stage X-ray focusing system was developed that enables the highest intensity of 1020 W cm−2. Key scientific results published in 2013 and 2014 in diverse fields are reviewed. The effects of molecular packing on the field-effect mobility and external quantum efficiency of polymer light-emitting transistors based on films composed of a donor–acceptor polymer, poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene- al t-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT), are investigated. The molecular packing structures of F8BT films are modified by annealing at different temperatures, such that large grains in a mesophase are formed. In the case of F8BT films in the mesophase, highly crystalline three-dimensional configurations with adjacent chains result in effective electron transport. The electron mobility, μ e , in a device in which the F8BT film is in the mesophase is approximately ten times greater than that for F8BT films annealed at other temperatures, and is estimated to be approximately 3.4 × 10 −3 cm 2 V −1 s −1 . This same device exhibits the highest hole and electron mobilities along with the highest maximum external quantum efficiency (approximately 1.4%) due to improved electron transport and carrier balance. The observations of the 2011 Tohoku tsunami and the 2010 Chilean tsunami in several rivers in Japan and in the Columbia River in the USA are analyzed for patterns of tsunami behavior in river environments. Tsunamis in rivers exhibit actions very different from those observed on an open coast, but very similar among different rivers, though the action scale in different rivers varies greatly. We describe two tsunami effects in rivers as observed in field data. First, the river tide modulates the tsunami wave in a very specific way common to all rivers. Second, a strong near-field tsunami can cause significant prolonged water accumulation in lower river reaches. Both effects are inherent in tidal river environments, and have been reproduced numerically in a simplified 1-D river using a non-linear, shallow-water model with bottom friction. The concept of using an ambipolar bilayer semiconducting heterostructure in organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs) is introduced to provide a new approach to achieve surface emission. The properties of top-gate-type bilayer OLETs with ambipolar materials based on two types of fluorene-type polymers used as an emissive layer and an electron blocking layer are investigated. Line-shaped yellow–green emission occurs near a hole-injection electrode. When hole transport is dominant in the upper layer which acts as an electron blocking layer, and electrons are injected into the lower layer, an in-plane light-emitting pattern is observed. The measured in-plane emission zone confirms that both hole and electron transport are determined to occur mainly along the different organic layers between the source and drain electrodes, and an in-plane recombination zone of electrons and holes exists near the bilayer organic interface. For many years, scientists around the world have sought an ultra-low-emittance ring-based light source that offers greater performance than existing third-generation light sources. Pioneering work on the seven-bend lattice for MAX IV [1] initiated these efforts. Another significant development was the scheme for nonlinearity control based on “phase-matched” sextupole pairs. This configuration, first introduced in a light source design by the ESRF design group [2], efficiently suppresses strong nonlinear resonances induced by sextupoles for chromaticity correction. Since a small dynamic aperture due to the strong nonlinearities mentioned earlier presents a great obstacle when we attempt to lower the beam emittance of a high-energy light source using individual bending magnets with small deflection angles, the ESRF scheme contributes significantly to the emittance reduction that can be practically achieved. The relations of river morphology and tsunami propagation in rivers were studied at several rivers in the Tohoku region during The Great Chilean Tsunami of 2010 and The Great East Japan Tsunami of 2011. It was found that river mouth morphological features play an important role in the intrusion of low magnitude tsunamis in which the geological and geographical conditions are an important factor. Nevertheless, the effects of these features were not found in the case of an extreme tsunami wave. As the wave enters the river, the propagation depends on other factors. It was found that the intrusion distance correlates well to the riverbed slope. The measurements of water level and riverbed slope were analyzed to propose an empirical method for estimating the damping coefficient for the tsunami propagation in rivers based on the tsunami of 2011. The proposed empirical method was used to approximate the length of the tsunami intrusion into a river by assuming that the furthest distance is given for the ratio of local tsunami wave height to the tsunami wave height at the river entrance of 0.05 (5 %). Abstract: This study investigates the morphological changes near the Nanakita River mouth in Japan. The morphology of the river mouth was greatly influenced during the Great East Japan Tsunami of 2011. The gradual morphological changes at the river mouth were investigated using two sets of data, of which, one was the continuous water level measurement data in the river entrance and in the sea, and the other being the intermittent aerial-photographs. The statistical parameters, viz., the correlation coefficient and the linear gradient between the two water level data, were analyzed, which formed as the basic for understanding the behavior of the river mouth, like river mouth closure or opening detected by the analysis of the water level variation. The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 triggered not only giant tsunami waves, but also caused significant land subsidence followed by land rise in the Sendai Coastal Plain areas. These impacts resulted in severe damages to the coastal infrastructure and induced coastal morphology changes along Japan's northeast coast. It was observed that the maximum downward deformation in the Sendai Coastal Plain was initially about - 0.3 m. Immediately after the earthquake, the land started to rise and it has already recovered back to its original position at some locations after 10 years. Thus, the high-quality measured beach profile data sets after the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake are valuable for exploring the impact of sea level rise (SLR) on shoreline position evolution, since the bed level change is inversely related to the sea level rise process. The data also provide a unique opportunity to evaluate the Equilibrium Beach Profile (EBP) theory and validate the Bruun concept. In the present study, a new simple analytical solution for time-dependent shoreline position response to the tectonic recovery process is developed based on the convolution method. A novel scheme to reduce transverse beam emittance in a ring accelerator is proposed by using a pair of coupling cavities as a basic unit to control damping partition numbers. As indicated by Robinson in 1958, a simple rf electromagnetic field (e.g., a TM210 mode by a single coupling cavity) cannot control the damping partition of three eigenoscillation modes in a ring accelerator due to the cancellation between the contributions from the magnetic and electric fields. Based on both analytical and numerical studies, we show that a pair of coupling cavities that satisfy phase and optics matching conditions can overcome this cancellation. The results indicate that the horizontal emittance is reducible to the theoretical limit based on the steady state condition and also, the emittance is reducible below the reduction limit under a nonsteady state by driving the coupling cavities with gated signals. Abstract: The boundary layer is very important in the relation between wave motion and bed stress, such as sediment transport. It is a known fact that bed stress behavior is highly influenced by the boundary layer beneath the waves. Specifically, the boundary layer underneath wave runup is difficult to assess and thus, it has not yet been widely discussed, although its importance is significant. In this study, the shallow water equation (SWE) prediction of wave motion is improved by being coupled with the k–ω model, as opposed to the conventional empirical method, to approximate bed stress. Subsequently, the First Order Center Scheme and Monotonic Upstream Scheme of Conservation Laws (FORCE MUSCL), which is a finite volume shock-capturing scheme, is applied to extend the SWE range for breaking wave simulation. The proposed simultaneous coupling method (SCM) assumes the depth-averaged velocity from the SWE is equivalent to free stream velocity. In turn, free stream velocity is used to calculate a pressure gradient, which is then used by the k–ω model to approximate bed stress. Finally, this approximation is applied to the momentum equation in the SWE. Two experimental cases will be used to verify the SCM by comparing runup height, surface fluctuation, bed stress, and turbulent intensity values. The SCM shows good comparison to experimental data for all before-mentioned parameters. Further analysis shows that the wave Reynolds number increases as the wave propagates and that the turbulence behavior in the boundary layer gradually changes, such as the increase of turbulent intensity. Abstract: In a filtered measure space, a characterization of weights for which the trace inequality of a positive operator holds is given by the use of discrete Wolffʼs potential. A refinement of the Carleson embedding theorem is also introduced. Sawyer type characterization of weights for which a two-weight norm inequality for a generalized Doobʼs maximal operator holds is established by an application of our Carleson embedding theorem. The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011, had magnitude of 9.0 on the Richter Scale with the epicenter approximately 70 km east of the Oshika Peninsula in Miyagi Prefecture. This earthquake triggered terrible tsunami waves which hit the coast of Japan and propagated around the Pacific Ocean. The earthquake and tsunami caused extensive and severe infrastructural damage, such as damages of coastal protection structures and buildings, and significantly changed coastal and river morphology. This paper presents tsunami-induced coastal and estuarine morphology changes in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, and subsequent recovery process in each study area. On sandy coasts, discontinuous coastal protection is likely to be severely damaged, resulting in serious erosion in the surrounding sandy coast. Furthermore, severe breaching was observed on sandy coasts where formerly river mouth was located, due to strong return flow from the catchment area. Abstract: Understanding of sea bottom boundary layer characteristics, especially bottom shear stress acting on the sea bed, is an important step needed in sediment transport modeling for practical application purposes. In the present study, a new generation system for bottom boundary layer under solitary wave is proposed. Applicability of this system is examined by comparing measured and numerical solution velocities. Moreover, transitional behavior from laminar to turbulence was investigated. It is concluded that the critical Reynolds number in the experiments shows good agreement with DNS result of Vittori and Blondeaux (2008) and laboratory data of Sumer et al. (2010), indicating validity of the generation system. Since the present generation system enables continuous measurement to obtain ensemble averaged quantities, it can be effectively utilized for future experimental studies on solitary wave boundary layers, including sediment transport experiments with movable bed. A poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS)-based nanocomposite (PPSNC) filled with titanate layers was used as a matrix polymer in a PPS/maleic anhydride ethylene butadiene co-polymer (MA-EBR) blend. The toughness of the PPS was increased significantly, because the inorganic titanate layers behaved as an effective compatibilizer to enhance the blending effect of MA-EBR. Scanning electron microscopy analysis confirmed that MA-EBR domains were finer and uniformly dispersed with a small particle size in the PPS matrix. In addition, transmission electron microscopy analysis proved that titanate layers aggregated at the interface between the PPS and MA-EBR. On the other hand, the initial morphology of the titanate layer in the PPSNC was maintained when untreated EBR was used as the domain polymer. The morphologies of titanate layers in the three types of polymers blended with this nanocomposite technique, including PPSNC/PA6, were investigated to discuss the factor which titanate layers affect the morphology of domain polymers, and it was indicated that the behavior of titanate layers was governed by an affinity between polymers and titanate layer surface. Turbulence due to wave motion and propagation is a very important aspect in sediment transport modeling. The boundary layer characteristic during the process will highly influence the sediment transport mechanism at the bottom. 1D model approach has been widely used to assess the turbulent boundary layer. However, the need for a more detailed model leads to the development of a more sophisticated models. This study presents a 2D turbulent model using k-ω equation to approach the turbulent boundary layer characteristic in oscillatory wave. The equations are solved using finite-difference center scheme. The model is applied to the case of oscillatory sinusoidal and skew wave. Organically-modified layered titanates (OMLTs) were used as new layered fillers to prepare poly(p-phenylenesulfide) (PPS)-based nanocomposites. The melt mixing of PPS with any OMLT led to the delamination of stacked titanate layers, regardless of the miscibility between intercalants of OMLTs and PPS, and attained a nanoscale dispersion of titanate layers which is an exfoliation structure in the PPS matrix. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement confirmed that titanate layers were successfully dispersed in the PPS matrix. OMLTs had a specific delamination mechanism, which is governed by melt mixing temperatures. In the melt processing at high temperature, the delamination of stacked-layers in OMLTs was facilitated by retaining an initial interlayer spacing of the layered structure and decreasing the surface charge density of the titanate crystal. A total of seven versions of two-equation turbulence models (four versions of low Reynolds number k-ε model, one k-ω model and two versions of k-ε / k-ω blended models) are tested against the direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of a one-dimensional oscillatory boundary layer with flat crested free-stream velocity that results from a steep pressure gradient. A detailed comparison has been made for cross-stream velocity, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), Reynolds stress, and ratio of Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy. It is observed that the newer versions of k-ε model perform very well in predicting the velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and Reynolds stress. The k-ω model and blended models underestimate the peak value of turbulent kinetic energy that may be explained by the Reynolds stress to TKE ratio in the logarithmic zone. The maximum bottom shear stress is well predicted by the k-ε model proposed by Sana et al. and the original k-ω model. Abstract: Biotin protein ligase (BPL) mediates covalent attachment of biotin to a specific lysine residue of biotin carboxyl carrier protein (BCCP) of biotin-dependent enzymes. We recently found that the biotinylation reaction from thermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus tokodaii has a unique characteristic that the enzyme BPL forms a tight complex with the product, biotinylated BCCP (169 amino acid residues). In the current work, we attempted to apply this characteristic to a novel protein tagging system. Thus, the N terminus of S. tokodaii BCCP was truncated and the interaction of the resulting BCCP, BCCPΔ100 and BCCPΔ17 (with 69 and 152 residues, respectively), with BPL was investigated by surface plasmon resonance (SPR). It was found that the binding of BPL to the biotinylated BCCPΔ100 is extremely tight with a dissociation constant (K D) of 1.2 nM, whereas that to the unbiotinylated counterpart was moderate with a K D of 3.3μM. Furthermore, chimeric proteins of glutathione S-transferase (GST) and green fluorescence protein (GFP) with BCCPΔ100 fused to their C terminus were prepared. The resulting fusion proteins were successfully biotinylated and captured on the BPL-modified SPR sensor chip or BPL-modified magnetic beads. Abstract: This paper presents an investigation of the roughness effects in the turbulent boundary layer for asymmetric waves by using the baseline (BSL) k–ω model. This model is validated by a set of the experimental data with different wave non-linearity index, N i (namely, N i =0.67, N i =0.60 and N i =0.58). It is further used to simulate asymmetric wave velocity flows with several values of the roughness parameter (a m /k s ) which increase gradually, namely from a m /k s =35 to a m /k s =963. The effect of the roughness tends to increase the turbulent kinetic energy and to decrease the mean velocity distribution in the inner boundary layer, whereas in the outer boundary layer, the roughness alters the turbulent kinetic energy and the mean velocity distribution is relatively unaffected. A new simple calculation method of bottom shear stress based on incorporating velocity and acceleration terms is proposed and applied into the calculation of the rate of bed-load transport induced by asymmetric waves. And further, the effect of bed roughness on the bottom shear stress and bed-load sediment transport under asymmetric waves is examined with the turbulent model, the newly proposed method, and the existing calculation method. It is found that the higher roughness elements increase the magnitude of bottom shear stress along a wave cycle and consequently, the potential net sediment transport rate. Abstract: A large number of studies have been done dealing with sinusoidal wave boundary layers in the past. However, ocean waves often have a strong asymmetric shape especially in shallow water, and net of sediment movement occurs. It is envisaged that bottom shear stress and sediment transport behaviors influenced by the effect of asymmetry are different from those in sinusoidal waves. Characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer under breaking waves (saw-tooth) are investigated and described through both laboratory and numerical experiments. A new calculation method for bottom shear stress based on velocity and acceleration terms, theoretical phase difference, φ and the acceleration coefficient, a c expressing the wave skew-ness effect for saw-tooth waves is proposed. The acceleration coefficient was determined empirically from both experimental and baseline k–ω model results. The new calculation has shown better agreement with the experimental data along a wave cycle for all saw-tooth wave cases compared by other existing methods. It was further applied into sediment transport rate calculation induced by skew waves. Sediment transport rate was formulated by using the existing sheet flow sediment transport rate data under skew waves by Watanabe and Sato [Watanabe, A. and Sato, S., 2004. Two new isoflavanones, 5,3'-dihydroxy-4'-methoxy-5'-(3-methyl-1,3-butadienyl)-2'',2''-dimethylpyrano[5,6:6,7]isoflavanone (1) and 5,3'-dihydroxy-5'-(3-hydroxy-3-methyl-1-butenyl)-4'-methoxy-2'',2''-dimethylpyrano[5,6:6,7]isoflavanone (2), together with two known isoflavonoids, cristacarpin, and euchrenone b10, were isolated from the stems of Erythrina costaricensis. Their structures were established on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. These new compounds are rare isoflavanones, possessing both a 2,2-dimethylpyran substituent and a prenyl analog. Single-pass free-electron lasers based on self-amplified spontaneous emission are enabling the generation of laser light at ever shorter wavelengths, including extreme ultraviolet, soft X-rays and even hard X-rays. A typical X-ray free-electron laser is a few kilometres in length and requires an electron-beam energy higher than 10 GeV (refs 6, 8). If such light sources are to become accessible to more researchers, a significant reduction in scale is desirable Here, we report observations of brilliant extreme-ultraviolet radiation from a 55-m-long compact self-amplified spontaneous-emission source, which combines short-period undulators with a high-quality electron source operating at a low acceleration energy of 250 MeV. The radiation power reaches saturation at wavelengths ranging from 51 to 61 nm with a maximum pulse energy of 30 µJ. The ultralow emittance (0.6π mm mrad) of the electron beam from a CeB6 thermionic cathode is barely degraded by a multiple-stage bunch compression system that dramatically enhances the beam current from 1 to 300 A. Abstract: Contribution of conformational isomerization to polymer tacticity has been studied in free radical polymerization of (−)-menthyl 2-acetamidoacrylate with azo initiators. It has been demonstrated that the chain end of the growing polymer radical, which is generated from the s-trans and s-cis conformers of monomer, produces stereoselectively new R and S configurational quaternary carbons, respectively, for the attack of monomer. In addition, polymerization reactivity of both conformers is indistinguishable under the present conditions, and the polymerization is considered to proceed through a chain-end controlled mechanism, which excludes a penultimate unit effect on tacticity in the polymerization. Japanese foreign policy six decades after the end of World War II stands at a crossroads. The forces of globalization and the rise of the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) seem to herald the end of the unipolar post-Cold War international system and the emergence of a new era defined by multi-polarity and multilateralism. Such global trends are manifest most clearly in Japan's own backyard, where phenomenal region-wide economic growth, a gradual redistribution of power (in particular the rise of China and India), and the increasingly important role of multilateral cooperation and regional institutions are dramatically transforming East Asia. This trend shows no signs of slowing down, much less reversing itself; nor would it be in Japan's interest to pursue any policy that seeks to do so. Nevertheless, the transformation itself remains almost on auto-pilot, lacking a clear long-term guiding vision. After presenting a brief overview of Japan's past policy toward the region, the goal of this paper will be to articulate such a vision through a series of policy proposals through which to ensure future peace, stability, and prosperity in East Asia. Abstract: Full-range equation covering all the flow regimes in a wave boundary layer is proposed for the boundary layer thickness. The results are compared with the available experimental data and good agreement has been found. In case of wave boundary layers, there are three definitions of boundary layer thickness in use. Therefore, the full-range equation is derived for three of the definitions. Abstract: Radical copolymerization of chiral monomer, (−)-menthyl 2-acetamidoacrylate (1), with low ceiling temperature (T c =62.0°C in [monomer]=1.0mol/L) and styrene or methyl methacrylate (MMA) has been studied near ceiling temperature (60°C) and at the temperature lower than T c (30°C). Monomer reactivity ratios and Alfrey–Price Q and e-values of 1 are estimated to be r 1 =0.27, r 2 =0.067, Q =3.0, and e =1.2 at 30°C, and r 1 =0.32 and r 2 =0.046 at 60°C for the copolymerization of 1 (M1) and styrene (M2), suggesting an alternating tendency at both temperatures, whereas for the copolymerization of 1 (M1) and MMA (M2) r 1 and r 2 are estimated to be 2.9 and 0.019 at 30°C, respectively, indicating longer sequence length of 1. Specific rotation and circular dichroism of the resulting copolymer indicate that styrene, in particular, is effectively incorporated into a helical copolymer structure at 60°C and even only 25mol% incorporation of the acetamidoacrylate unit in the copolymer induces the helix formation in solution. Non-Sustained Disruptive Discharge (NSDD) sometimes occurs when the voltage is applied for a certain time between vacuum gaps after the current is interrupted. However the mechanism of NSDD has not yet been clarified. We conducted a study to clarify this phenomenon using the contact materials CuCr, CuW, and AgWC. We applied a voltage (20[kV]-30[kV]) of ac 50[Hz] after current interruption (1 [kArms]-8[kArms]), and checked the generating frequency of NSDD. After the current interruption test, we measured the contact surface roughness and field emission current. The result showed that surface roughness and field emission current are not related to this phenomenon and also that CuCr (melt) showed the best performance in all tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An experimental and numerical study has been carried out to study the wave boundary layers under asymmetric waves. The experiments were conducted in an oscillating tunnel using a simple mechanical system to generate an asymmetric oscillatory motion similar to cnoidal waves. The velocities were measured by laser Doppler velocimetry and the bottom shear stress was calculated from the cross-stream velocity profile. A low Reynolds number k–[variant_greek_epsilon] model was used to predict the hydrodynamic properties of the cnoidal wave boundary layers. After validating the model with the experimental data, a series of numerical experiments were carried out to study the transitional behavior of these boundary layers by virtue of friction factor and phase difference between mean free-stream velocity and bottom shear stress. Finally a stability diagram was drawn to demarcate the laminar, transition, and fully turbulent regimes using the numerical results. The present study would be useful for the hydraulic and coastal engineers interested in calculating bottom shear stress in order to compute the sediment transport in coastal environments. Field observation of water quality changes was performed during summer in 2001 and during autumn in 2002 in Nomi Bay in Kochi Prefecture, Japan, where extensive aquaculture has been carried out. Large-scale internal tides were observed during summer, and DO (Dissolved Oxygen) was sufficiently high even at the bottom. Meanwhile, a phenomenon called "mizu-domari" (slack water) and anoxic water formation were observed during autumn. It is generally well known that anoxic water forms in summer due to strong stratification in vertical direction and it disappears in autumn. Contrary to this general expectation, however, the water quality in Nomi Bay was worse in autumn than that in summer. Thus, the role of the internal tide is quantitatively investigated using a numerical model.
