Mg:C60 co-evaporation method has been performed to obtain fulleride of MgxC60 thin films for carrier doping. Atomic concentration of the film has been examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to calibrate the composition ratio, and the results indicated that Mg concentration in the film was controlled well. Then, crystal structure of the Mg:C60 mixing film has been examined by using grazing incidence x-ray diffraction method. The diffraction patterns suggested that these films were microcrystalline MgxC60. Conductivity of the mixing films was increased as composition ratio of Mg increasing. Introduction: Isotretinoin is a widely used, effective medication for moderate to severe acne. It is typically used for several months, which necessitates regular laboratory monitoring. However, consensus on the optimal assessment frequency is lacking., Method: This is a single-center retrospective study on 1182 patients who received isotretinoin for acne at the Dermatology Clinic in Jordan University Hospital over 5 years., Results: Of the 1182 patients, 892 (76.57% females) met the inclusion criteria. An increase in the proportion of patients with abnormal triglycerides and total cholesterol levels from baseline to the sixth month was observed ( p  < 0.05). Conversely, differences in the number of patients with abnormal AST, ALT, and CBC were not found throughout treatment ( p  > 0.05). Moreover, there was a decrease in the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) ratio and systemic inflammatory index (SII) after the sixth month of isotretinoin treatment compared to the baseline ( p  = 0.012 and p  = 0.021, respectively)., Conclusions: We found that a baseline cholesterol level of 163.9 mg/dl and a baseline triglycerides level of 85.5 mg/dL are highly specific and sensitive in detecting grade 1 abnormalities at the one-month follow-up. This novel prediction approach serves as an effective risk stratification method for isotretinoin acne patients.

One of the main contributing factors of antibiotic resistance is the dispensing of antibiotics without prescription. This study investigated community pharmacists' knowledge, attitudes, and practices in relation to antibiotic dispensing and resistance in United Arab Emirates (UAE). A cross-sectional survey was conducted using validated questionnaire. (40.1%) had an overall positive KAP score. A total of (88%) respondents were aware of the illegality of dispensing antibiotics without a prescription. Only (31%) had good knowledge regarding amoxicillin dosage for upper respiratory tract infection. The primary misconduct found numerous pharmacists prescribing antibiotics without a prescription, even though they were aware that this should never be done. Pharmacists who attended events focused on antibiotic use and resistance were more likely to have good knowledge about antibiotics (Adjusted Odd Ratio (AOR): 1.673; 95%CI: 1.029-2.719; p  = 0.038), more likely to have positive attitude (AOR: 1.889; 95%CI: 1.133-3.149; p  = 0.015), and more likely to have good practice (AOR: 3.182; 95%CI: 1.541-6.572; p  = 0.002).

Vaccination provides great protection against several infections, including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the endeavor faces multiple context-specific problems that affect its uptake, leading to vaccine hesitancy. Vaccine hesitancy is a focal barrier to the success of COVID-19 vaccination programs. This umbrella review aimed to present a summary of global data regarding vaccine hesitancy and acceptance rates among medical students, health professionals, and health care workers. In this regard, two databases, PubMed and Scopus, were selected for data retrieval and analysis. A search term and an inclusion/exclusion criterion were applied to summarize the findings of existing systematic reviews. A pooled prevalence of vaccine acceptance and hesitancy with 95% confidence interval (CI) was taken as a prerequisite for this review. The results found a high percentage of COVID-19 vaccination ranging from 13.1% (95% CI, 6.9%-20.9%) to 46% (95% CI, 0.38%-0.54%), while the percentage of acceptance varied from 46% (95% CI, 37%-54%) to 83.0% (95% CI, 71%-96%) among medical students, health professionals, and health care workers. This umbrella review found a high percentage of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among medical students, health professionals, and health care workers. Cesium lead iodide bromide (CsPbIBr 2 ) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have improved stability compared to other perovskite compositions. However, they still face significant challenges due to their poor photovoltaic performance parameters, which limit the devices' power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). This study proposes a novel device design to tailor the potential of CsPbIBr 2 PSCs by improving their optoelectronic properties. An advanced 3D multiphysics approach was rigorously used to investigate the optics and electrical properties of the proposed CsPbIBr 2 PSCs. This approach combines finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) and finite element method (FEM) techniques with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The outcome from the adapted numerical approach is in good agreement with the experimental results. The optimized CsPbIBr 2 PSC demonstrates a promising power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 16.4%, associated V OC of 1.53 V, FF of 80.6%, and J SC of 13.4 mA cm -2 . Therefore, the potential of CsPbIBr 2 perovskites could be further explored with continued research and development in material science and device physics.

This study delves into enhancing the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by optimizing the surface morphologies and optoelectronic properties of the electron transport layer (ETL) using tungsten (W) doping in zinc oxide (ZnO). Through a unique green synthesis process and spin-coating technique, W-doped ZnO films were prepared, exhibiting improved electrical conductivity and reduced interface defects between the ETL and perovskite layers, thus facilitating efficient electron transfer at the interface. High-quality PSCs with superior ETL demonstrated a substantial 30% increase in power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to those employing pristine ZnO ETL. These solar cells retained over 70% of their initial PCE after 4000 h of moisture exposure, surpassing reference PSCs by 50% PCE over this period. Advanced numerical multiphysics solvers, employing finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) and finite element method (FEM) techniques, were utilized to elucidate the underlying optoelectrical characteristics of the PSCs, with simulated results corroborating experimental findings. The study concludes with a thorough discussion on charge transport and recombination mechanisms, providing insights into the enhanced performance and stability achieved through W-doped ZnO ETL optimization.

Background: There is paucity of data on the prevalence of novel and traditional cardiovascular risk factors in young women with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in the Middle East. We sought to evaluate clinical profiles and prevalence of novel and traditional risk factors in Middle Eastern young women with ASCVD compared with age-matched controls., Methods: Women 18-50 years of age who have ASCVD were enrolled and each was aged-matched with two women with no ASCVD. Prevalence of novel and traditional risk factors was compared in the two groups. Multivariable analyzes examined the independent association of 16 factors with ASCVD., Results: Of 627 young women enrolled mean age 44.1 ± 5.2 years; 209 had ASCVD and 418 served as controls. Women with ASCVD had significantly higher prevalence of five of the studied traditional risk factors (hypertension, type 2 diabetes [T2D], smoking, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol serum levels, and family history of premature ASCVD [FHx]) than women with no ASCVD. Additionally, of the 11 novel and psychosocial risk factors studied, four showed significantly higher prevalence in young women with ASCVD (preterm delivery, hypertensive disease of pregnancy gestational diabetes, and low level of education). Childhood and adolescence, vital in shaping adult life and society, are profoundly impacted during conflicts like Syria's devastating war. This study explores the prevalence of behavioral disorders in Syrian children and adolescents, examining the influence of war and family-related factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted on children aged 2-17 years at a children's outpatient clinic in Damascus, Syria. We assessed parents' quality of life, war and family-related factors, and behavioral difficulties through parental interviews using two questionnaires: the Arabic version of the Strengths & Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the brief Arabic version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). 74.67% of children aged 2-4 years and 61.29% of children aged 5-17 years were experiencing behavioral difficulties, with emotional difficulties being the most prevalent ones. Children exposed to kidnapping, family losses, lack of school enrollment, and those with parents having lower education, lower socioeconomic status, and poorer quality of life exhibited higher Total SDQ scores. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), an incretin hormone renowned for its role in post-meal blood sugar regulation and glucose-dependent insulin secretion, has gained attention as a novel treatment for diabetes through GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1-RA). Despite their efficacy, concerns have been raised regarding the potential associations between GLP-1-RA and certain malignancies, including medullary thyroid cancer. However, evidence of its association with prostate cancer (PCa) remains inconclusive. This review delves into the intricate relationship between GLP-1-RA and PCa, exploring the mechanisms through which GLP-1-Rs may impact PCa cells. We discuss the potential pathways involving cAMP, ERK, AMPK, mTOR, and P27. Furthermore, we underscore the imperative for additional research to elucidate the impact of GLP-1-RA treatment on PCa progression, patient outcomes, and potential interactions with existing therapies. Translational studies and clinical trials are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the role of GLP-1-RA in PCa management.

Background: Health assessment tools developed using mainstream or Western concepts have been widely used in clinical practice worldwide. However, even culturally adapted or culturally based tools may not be relevant in other social contexts if they are grounded in Western beliefs and perspectives. The application of mainstream assessment tools, when used in Indigenous populations, can lead to the inappropriate application of normative data and inaccurate or biased diagnosis of conditions as Indigenous concepts of health differ from Western biomedical concepts of health. Thus, considering the need for culturally meaningful, sensitive, safe, and unbiased health assessment approaches and instruments over recent years, tools have been developed or adapted by and with Indigenous populations in Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Canada, and the United States. However, there is no existing systematic or scoping review to identify the methods and approaches used in adapting or developing health assessment tools for use with the Indigenous population in Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Canada, and the United States., Methods: In response to these gaps, we are working with a First Nations Community Advisory Group in Northern Ontario, Canada, to undertake a scoping review following the 2020 JBI methodology for scoping reviews. A systematic search will be conducted in PubMed, APA PsychINFO, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Bibliography of Native North Americans, Australian Indigenous Health info data set, and Indigenous Health Portal. Two reviewers will independently screen all abstracts and full-text articles for inclusion using criteria co-developed with an advisory group. We will chart the extracted information and summarize and synthesize the data. The summarized findings will be presented to a Community Advisory Group, including First Nations community partners, an Elder, and community members, and their feedback will be incorporated into the discussion section of the scoping review., Discussion: This scoping review involves iterative consultation with the Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars, First Nations Community Advisory Group, and community partners throughout the research process. This review aims to summarize the evidence on standard ethical approaches and practices used in Indigenous research while adapting or developing health assessment tools. It will inform the larger study focused on developing an Indigenous Functional Assessment tool. Although most scald burn injuries involve children under six, because of the challenges of using head mounted displays with young children there is very little research exploring the use of VR in children under six. The current clinical pilot study measured the analgesic effectiveness of our new desktop VR system (with no VR helmet) in children under six during burn wound care (a within-subjects design with randomized treatment order). Between December 2021-April 2022, nine children with burn injuries (10 months to 5 years age, mean = 18 months) participated. The mean burn size was 10% Total Body Surface Area, range 2-22%. Using nurse's ratings, VR significantly reduced children's pain during burn wound care by 40% on the observational Faces, Legs, Activity, Crying, and Consolability (FLACC) pain scale. Specifically, non-parametric within-subject sign tests compared nurse's ratings of the young patients' pain during burn wound care using usual pain medications with no VR = 6.67, (SD = 2.45) vs. adjunctive Animal Rescue World VR (VR = 4.00, SD = 2.24, p < 0.01). The observational Procedure-Behavior Checklist (PBCL) nurse's scale measured a 34% reduction in anxiety with VR as compared to pharmacologic treatment alone ( p < 0.005). Similarly, when using single graphic rating scales the patients' parents reported a significant 36% decrease in their child's pain during VR ( p < 0.05), a 38% ( p < 0.005) decrease in their child's anxiety during VR, and a significant increase in patients' joy during VR. It can be concluded that during burn wound care with no distraction (traditional pain medications), children under 6 years old experienced severe pain during a 10 min burn wound cleaning session. During burn wound care combining desktop virtual reality and traditional pain medications, the same pediatric patients experienced only mild pain during burn wound cleaning/debridement. VR significantly reduced the children's pain and anxiety during burn wound care.

Background Dietary supplements are used for a variety of reasons, some of which are for medical conditions, to compensate for dietary insufficiency, to improve physical performance, and to boost immunity. Generally, individuals who visit sports facilities seek different benefits; it could be for health and well-being, to achieve the desired body shape, for enjoyment purposes, or as a way to socialize. To help achieve some of these goals, dietary supplements can be taken. Aims This study is designed to assess the prevalence and awareness of dietary supplement use among Saudi women who frequent fitness centers in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in November 2021 among Saudi women who visited gyms in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The sample consisted of 355 participants, all of whom were women from Saudi Arabia. The statistical analysis was done using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), Version 21.0 (Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.). Necessary statistical tests such as the chi-square, the t-test, and other appropriate tests were used. A p-value of less than 0.05 has been adopted for statistical significance. Results The majority of the 355 female participants consumed dietary supplements (68.7%). The most commonly used supplements were vitamins (82.8%), amino acids and proteins (30.3%), minerals (22.1%), and fatty acids (3.3%). In the study group, 53.3% of those who were using or used supplements had previous knowledge; 13.1% were up-to-date; and 33.6% weren't. No relationship was found between supplement use and educational level, weight, body mass index (BMI), or marital status. Conclusion Dietary supplement use is common among women who visited gyms in Saudi Arabia. Vitamins were the most commonly used supplements, which suggests that users were more concerned about general health and diet deficiencies than anything else. We investigated the effect of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modification of ZnO on the resistive switching behaviour by fabricating electrode-sandwiched devices (ITO/ZnO-SAM/Al). The resistive switching voltages of SAM-modified ZnO films were shifted from that of bare ZnO depending on the surface dipole induced by the SAMs. In particular, methylaminopropyl-substituted SAM-modified ZnO showed lower switching voltage (1.6 V) than bare ZnO (2.9 V). Moreover, the on/off ratio was also improved by SAM modification (from 10 2 to 10 4 ).

Our aim is to demonstrate a general-purpose data and knowledge validation approach that enables reproducible metrics for data and knowledge quality and safety. We researched widely accepted statistical process control methods from high-quality, high-safety industries and applied them to pharmacy prescription data being migrated between EHRs. Natural language medication instructions from prescriptions were independently categorized by two terminologists as a first step toward encoding those medication instructions using standardized terminology. Overall, the weighted average of medication instructions that were matched by reviewers was 43%, with strong agreement between reviewers for short instructions (K=0.82) and long instructions (K=0.85), and moderate agreement for medium instructions (K=0.61). Category definitions will be refined in future work to mitigate discrepancies. We recommend incorporating appropriate statistical tests, such as evaluating inter-rater and intra-rater reliability and bivariate comparison of reviewer agreement over an adequate statistical sample, when developing benchmarks for health data and knowledge quality and safety., (©2022 AMIA - All rights reserved.)

Background and Aims: Excessive pain during medical procedures is a worldwide medical problem. Most scald burns occur in children under 6, who are often undermedicated. Adjunctive Virtual Reality (VR) distraction has been shown to reduce pain in children aged 6-17, but little is known about VR analgesia in young children. This study tests whether desktop VR (VR Animal Rescue World) can reduce the just noticeable pressure pain of children aged 2-10., Methods: A within-subject repeated measures design was used. With treatment order randomized, each healthy volunteer pediatric participant underwent brief cutaneous pressure stimuli under three conditions: (1) no distraction, (2) a verbal color naming task (no VR), and (3) a large TV-based desktop VR distraction. A hand-held Wagner pressure pain stimulation device was used to generate just noticeable pain sensations. Participants indicated when a steadily increasing non-painful pressure stimulus first turned into a painful pressure sensation (just noticeable pain)., Results: A total of 40 healthy children participated (43% aged 2-5 years; and 57% aged 6-10 years). Compared to the no distraction condition, the 40 children showed significant VR analgesia (i.e., a significant reduction in pain sensitivity during the VR Animal Rescue World condition), t (39) = 9.83, p < 0.001, SD = 6.24. VR was also significantly more effective at reducing pain sensitivity vs. an auditory color naming task, t (39) = 5.42, p < 0.001, SD = 5.94. The subset of children aged 2-5 showed significant reductions in pain during VR. Children under 6 showed greater sensitivity to pain during no distraction than children aged 6-10., Conclusion: During no distraction, children under 6 years old were significantly more sensitive to pain than children aged 6-10. Background Since the spread of the COVID-19 virus, governments are putting significant resources into ending the pandemic. Vaccination arises as the best solution to get back to our everyday lives. However, we are now facing vaccine hesitancy, which is a critical problem. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted between December 15, 2020, and March 1, 2021, using a validated online-based questionnaire; participants were compared using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program based on multiple factors. Results A total of 1607 participants throughout Jordan have responded to the questionnaire, among which 880 (54.8%) have bachelor's degrees, 236 (14.7%) have a high educational level (master and doctoral), and 491 (30.5%) have a diploma or less. Although this is a non-probable sample, it is not a representative sample as, according to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), only 33.6% of the Jordan population have a tertiary education. Overall, 892 (55.5%) of the studied subjects had the intention to take the vaccine, distributed as follows: 156 (66.1%) of the high educational participants wanted to take the vaccine, compared to 512 (58.2%) of those who have bachelor's degree and 224 (45.6%) of those who have diploma or less (p < 0.001). Reading scientific articles talking about the vaccines and their effects (55.6%, p < 0.001), knowing the mechanism of action (45.2%, p = 0.007), getting proper medical advice (27.2%, p < 0.001), encouraged by the increasing number of infections and deaths (39.7%, p < 0.001), and the number of people who received the vaccine (16.1%, p < 0.001) were the most critical factors that played a role in taking the vaccine by all of the studied groups. Male gender (OR = 2.02; 95% CI = 1.54-2.64; p < 0.001), high income of more than 1000 JDs (1400 USD) (OR = 3.23; 95% CI = 2.21-4.71; p < 0.001), having an educational level of either high education (OR = 3.39; 95% CI = 2.07-5.55; p < 0.001) or bachelor degree (OR = 1.67; 95% CI = 1.25-2.24; p = 0.001), and being encouraged by the increasing number of infections and deaths caused by COVID-19 (OR = 1.97; 95% CI = 1.46-2.66; p < 0.001) were all significantly associated with the willingness to take the vaccine. The device durability of inverted organic solar cells (OSCs) is investigated based on Y6, which is an effective nonfullerene acceptor for high-performance OSCs. The durability of Y6-based inverted OSCs is poor and it can be caused by aggregation of Y6 in the bulk-heterojunction layer due to heating by continuous photo-irradiation (≈65 °C, 100 mW cm -2 , and 72 h). It is found that the aggregation of Y6 is suppressed at a low temperature (≈50 °C), and that the Y6-based devices can be useful as a photodurable near-infrared detector upon continuous laser irradiation., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Azide-oligo(ethylene glycol)-terminated self-assembled monolayers (N 3 -OEG-SAMs) are promising interfacial structures for surface functionalization. Its many potential applications include chemical/bio-sensing and construction of surface models owing to its cross-coupling activity that originates from the azide group and oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) units for non-specific adsorption resistance. However, there are only a few studies and limited information, particularly on the molecular-scale structures and local cross-coupling activities of N 3 -OEG-SAMs, which are vital to understanding its surface properties and interfacial molecular design. In this study, molecular-scale surface structures and cross-coupling activity of azide-hexa(ethylene glycol)-terminated SAMs (N 3 -EG 6 -SAMs) were investigated using frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM) in liquid. The N 3 -EG 6 -SAMs were prepared on Au(111) substrates through the self-assembly of 11-azido-hexa(ethylene glycol)-undecane-1-thiol (N 3 -EG 6 -C 11 -HS) molecules obtained from a liquid phase. Subnanometer-resolution surface structures were visualized in an aqueous solution using a laboratory-built FM-AFM instrument. The results show a well-ordered molecular arrangement in the N 3 -EG 6 -SAM and its clean surfaces originating from the adsorption resistance property of the terminal EG 6 units. Surface functionalization by the cross-coupling reaction of copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition was observed, indicating a structural change in the form of fluctuating structures and island-shaped structures depending on the concentration of the alkyne molecules. The FM-AFM imaging enabled to provide information on the relationship between the surface structures and cross-coupling activity. These findings provide molecular-scale information on the functionalization of the N 3 -EG 6 -SAMs, which is helpful for the interfacial molecular design based on alkanethiol SAMs in many applications.

Analogues of methyllycaconitine (MLA) based on a (3-ethyl-9-methylidene-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-1-yl)methanol template have been designed and synthesised that incorporate the modified ester sidechains distinct from that present in the natural product. Electrophysiology experiments using Xenopus oocytes expressing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) revealed selected analogues served as non-competitive inhibitors that showed selectivity for the α4β2 over α7 nAChR subtypes, and selectivity for the (α4) 3 (β2) 2 over (α4) 2 (β2) 3 stoichiometry. In this study, the spontaneous microstructure tuning of TiO 2 was observed by aging the ethanol/water TiO 2 paste for up to 20 days at ambient conditions. A dynamic light scattering study reveals that it formed the outstanding reproducible TiO 2 microstructure with a ∼200 nm average particle size and stabilizes in 6 to 20 days under an ambient atmosphere. Interestingly, the as-deposited day 15 sample spontaneously changed its crystallinity upon keeping the paste at ambient conditions; meanwhile the day 0 sample showed an amorphous structure. A dense, uniform, and stable TiO 2 electrode was cast on a fluorine doped-tin oxide substrate using the electrospray technique. We exploit the spontaneous evolution of the TiO 2 nanopowder to revisit the fabrication procedure of the TiO 2 photoelectrode for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The controlled microstructure TiO 2 film was used in DSSCs, which, to the best of our knowledge, achieved the highest power conversion efficiency of 9.65% using N719 dye in sensitizing the TiO 2 photoanode.

Background/aim: Stage-specific embryonic antigen (SSEA)-4 plays important roles in the malignant aggressiveness of various cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the pathological characteristics of SSEA-4 in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC)., Materials and Methods: SSEA-4 expression and its pathological roles were evaluated in five prostate cancer (PC) cell lines and 27 CRPC tissues. The relationship between SSEA-4 and the androgen receptor (AR) was also examined., Results: SSEA-4 expression was detected in AR-negative cells (PC3, DU145, and AICaP1) but was not detected in AR-positive cells (LNCaP and AICaP2). SSEA-4 expression in human CRPC tissues was significantly higher than that in locally advanced or metastatic hormone sensitive PC (HSPC) tissues. A negative correlation was also detected between SSEA-4 and AR in CRPC tissues but not in HSPC tissues., Conclusion: SSEA-4 was over-expressed in CRPC and the changes were mediated by complex mechanisms that related to the AR and hormonal therapy., (Copyright © 2021 International Institute of Anticancer Research (Dr. George J. With the rapid improvement of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), long-life operational stability has become a major requirement for their commercialization. In this work, we devised a pristine cesium-formamidinium-methylammonium (termed as CsFAMA) triple-cation-based perovskite precursor solution into the ionic liquid (IL)-assisted MAPbI 3 nanoparticles (NPs) through a seeded growth approach in which the host IL-assisted MAPbI 3 NPs remarkably promote high-quality perovskite films with large single-crystal domains, enhancing the device performance and stability. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the MAPbI 3 NP-seeded growth of MAPbI 3 NPs/CsFAMA-based PSCs is as high as 19.44%, which is superior to those of MAPbI 3 NPs and pristine CsFAMA films as the photoactive layer (9.52 and 17.33%, respectively). The long-term light-soaking and moisture stability of IL-aided MAPbI 3 NPs/CsFAMA-based devices (non-encapsulated) remain above 90 and 80%, respectively, of their initial output after 2 h of light illumination (1 sun) and 6000 h storage at ambient with a relative humidity range of 30-40%. The use of the IL-assisted MAPbI 3 NP-seeded growth for PSCs is a significant step toward developing stable and reliable perovskite photovoltaic devices.

Detailed analyses of the microstructures of bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) layers are important for the development of high-performance photovoltaic organic solar cells (OSCs). However, analytical methods for BHJ layer microstructures are limited because BHJ films are composed of a complex mixture of donor and acceptor materials. In our previous study on the microstructure of a BHJ film composed of donor polymers and fullerene-based acceptors, we analyzed donor polymer-only films after selectively extracting fullerene-based acceptors from the film by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Not only was AFM suitable for a clear analysis of the morphology of the donor polymers in the BHJ film, but it also allowed us to approximate the acceptor morphology by analyzing the pores in the extracted films. Herein we report a method for the selective extraction of nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) from a BHJ layer in OSCs and provide a detailed analysis of the remaining BHJ films based upon AFM. We found that butyl glycidyl ether is an effective solvent to extract NFAs from BHJ films without damaging the donor polymer films. By using the selective extraction method, the morphologies of NFA-free BHJ films fabricated under various conditions were studied in detail. The results may be useful for the optimization of BHJ film structures composed of NFAs and donor polymers.
