The binder in hot-mix asphalt (HMA) is aged (oxidized) in a short-time period during haul-and-queue in the field. Since the oxidative aging of asphalt is a complex chemical process, it is difficult to define the asphalt aging as a function of limited variables. When comparing the same types of asphalt mixes, however, the mix temperature (T) and time (t) kept at the T will be the primary source of variation affecting aging levels of the binder in the mix. Since the binder aging level is not easy to estimate without measuring a physical property, this study concentrated on developing an aging quantity (AQ) model for estimating aging levels of the binder in the mix based on T and t. The loose asphalt mixes were artificially short-term aged at various Ts for different t; 130, 160, and 180 °C for 1, 2, 4, and 8 h. The absolute viscosity (AV) values, which represent aging levels of the recovered binder after each short-term aging (SA) of normal dense-graded mix, were used for regression with AQ values computed by the AQ model. The best-fit AQ model was selected by trial-and-error regression iterations between measured AV and computed AQ. The AQ was then used to estimate AV (EAV) of the aged asphalts in various normal asphalt mixes. It was found that the AQ was useful for estimating AV of the binder in the SA-treated mix, and the EAV by AQ showed an excellent correlation with the measured AV with R2 > 0.99. Therefore, it was possible to conclude that the AQ could be used to predict aging level of various short-term-aged normal asphalt mixes if the materials sources were limited.

Fermenting garlic and onion provides the advantages of storage life extension, anti-oxidative and anti-diabetic activities, and their metabolite, allyl mercaptan, offers a strong aroma and various health benefits. Here, we report the probiotic properties of Lactobacillus pentosus SMB718 isolated from Korean traditional paste and its high allyl mercaptan productivity in garlic and onion fermentation. This strain was safe for use in food fermentation, as it was a non-biogenic amine producer and non-hemolytic. It showed high stability under simulated human gastrointestinal conditions and good adhesion ability to intestinal epithelial cells, including both Caco-2 and HT-29. This strain had antioxidant and anti-microbial activities. In addition, the heat-killed cells and lysate exerted anti-inflammatory effects on both LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells and mouse macrophages by inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and induction of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, this strain possessed good fermentation properties in garlic and onion-enriched radish juice (GORJ); it grew well decreasing the pH and provided a rich aroma compound during fermentation. When L. pentosus SMB718 was used as a starter in garlic and onion fermentation, a significantly higher amount of allyl mercaptan (344 ppb) was produced compared with that produced by the type strain (82 ppb). In conclusion, L. pentosus SMB718 can be used as a beneficial probiotic starter for better flavor production in the fermentation of allium species plants.

The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) participated in the BIPM.RI(II)-K4.Tc-99 m comparison of activity measurements of 99mTc. We develop the national primary standard for 99mTc solution used during the comparison. We use two primary liquid scintillation counting techniques for the standardization: digital coincidence counting with the 4πβ(LS)-γ(NaI(T1))system and triple-to-double coincidence ratio counting. Both methods give consistent results for the specific activity of a 99mTc solution. Adopting the result from the DCC method as the reference value of the 99mTc measurement, we evaluate the standard uncertainty of 0.856% for the KRISS primary standard of the 99mTc activity. The K4 comparison result shows that the newly-established KRISS primary standard lies within the standard uncertainty with the key comparison reference value defined from other 99mTc measurements.

A 24 segmented HPGe coaxial detector was set up with a digitized data acquisition system (DAQ). The DAQ was composed of a digitizer (5 × 107sampling/s), a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), and a real time operating system. The Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM), rise time, signal characteristics, and spectra of a 137Cs source were evaluated. The data were processed using an in-house developed gamma-ray tracking system.

본 연구에서는 산양삼 지상부(줄기, 잎)의 동결건조물 함량을 달리하여 열수 추출물과 70% 에탄올 추출물을 제조하고, 항산화, 피부 미백 및 주름 개선 활성을 측정하여 미용 식품의 원료로 사용하기 위한 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 산양삼 지상부열수, 에탄올 추출물은 200 μg/mL 농도에서 DPPH radical 저해율은 각각 16.69, 2.18%를 나타내었고, ABTS radical 저해율은 각각 4.04, 3.25%를 나타내었다. 200 μg/mL 농도에서 열수 및 에탄올 추출물의 PF가 각각 1.06, 1.09 PF를 나타내었고, TBARs는 모두 96% 정도의 활성을 나타내었다. PF와 TBARs가 DPPH와 ABTS 보다 우수한 활성을 나타낸 것을 통하여 산양삼 지상부 추출물은 지용성 물질에 대한 항산화능이 더 뛰어나다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 열수 및 에탄올 추출물의 elastase와 collagenase 저해율은 200 μg/mL 농도에서 각각 15.71, 32.26% 그리고 20.43, 86.74%를 나타내었다. Tyrosinase 저해율은 200μg/mL의 농도에서 각각 10.97, 52.39%를 나타내었다. 이러한 결과에 따라 산양삼 지상부 추출물의 주름 개선 효과가 특히나 우수한 것을 알 수 있었으며, 피부의 주름을 개선시키는 새로운 미용 식품의 원료로서 사용이 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

본 연구에서는 탁리산 열수추출물을 용매 분획하여 항산화, 주름억제, 미백효과에 대한 활성을 검증하여 화장품 소재로서 이용가능성을 연구하였다. 용매 분획물로 DPPH radical scavenge, ABTS radical scavenge, elastase, tyrosinase 저해활성을 확인하였고 에틸아세테이트 분획물(TW-EA)이 가장 높은 저해활성을 나타내었다. 세포내에서의 주름억제, 미백효과를 확인하기 위해서 western blot을 실시하였고 비교 검증을 위해 사용한 positive contol보다 TW-EA의 억제효과가 뛰어난 것을 확인하였다. 이러한 결과로 탁리산의 화장품소재로서 적용 가능성을 검증하였다.

A new radiation scale is proposed. With empathy toward the vast majority of people who are not well versed in radiation and related matters, and thus suffering from misunderstanding that breeds unnecessary fear of radiation, the aim of proposing a new radiation scale, radiation index (RAIN), is to put the general public at ease with the concept of radiation. RAIN is defined in dimensionless numbers that relate any specific radiation dose to a properly defined reference level. As RAIN is expressed in plain numbers without an attached scientific unit, the public will feel comfortable with its friendly look, which in turn should help them understand radiation dose levels easily and allay their anxieties about radiation. The expanded awareness and proper understanding of radiation will empower the public to feel that they are not hopeless victims of radiation. The correspondence between RAIN and the specific accumulated dose is established. The equivalence will allow RAIN to serve as a common language of communication for the general public with which they can converse with radiation experts to discuss matters related to radiation safety, radiation diagnosis and therapy, nuclear accidents, and other related matters. Such fruitful dialogues will ultimately enhance public acceptance of radiation and associated technologies.

HaCaT 세포에서 UVB와 IFN-γ/TNF-α에 의한 염증 관련 인자의 활동에 복분자 씨앗 추출물의 항염증 소재로서의 가능성을 알아보고자 하였다. 복분자 씨앗 추출물은 HaCaT 세포에서 UVB와 IFN-γ/TNF-α에 의한 ROS 유도 활성과 interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, interleukin-8의 발현을 억제 하였다. 또한 염증 매개인자인 cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2)의 발현 또한 억제 시켰으며, COX-2에 의해 증가되어 지는 PGE2의 발현 또한 억제 시키는 것으로 확인 되었다. 마지막으로 복분자 씨앗 추출물의 피부장벽의 주요 인자인 filaggrin의 발현을 측정해 본 결과 농도 의존적으로 손상된 filaggrin의 발현을 증가 시키는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다. 이를 통하여 복분자 씨앗 추출물이 표피 층의 손상을 회복함으로써 염증을 보호하는 효능이 있음을 확인 할 수 있었다. 이상의 결과로부터 복분자 씨앗 추출물은 UVB로부터 발생되어지는 염증을 개선시킴으로써 항염증에 효능이 있는 추 출물임을 확인 수 있었다.

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) seeds are well- known traditional oriental medicines that have long been used for the remedies of blood stasis and bone formation in east Asia. In this study, ethyl acetate (EtOAc) was used for extraction of the main chemical compounds from C. tinctorius seeds. Four major compounds were identified, acacetin, cosmosiin, N-feruloyl serotonin and N-(p-coumaroyl) serotonin. Each compound was evaluated for its inhibitory activity against the inflammatory process of macrophages. All compounds significantly inhibited production of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- stimulated nitric oxide (NO) and pro-inflammatory cytokines. The protein levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) were dramatically decreased by serotonins in a dose-dependent manner in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. These results suggest that serotonin derivatives from safflower seeds may reduce inflammation- related diseases.

Nymphoides indica, an aquatic plant, is used as folk medicine in some countries. Our previous study demonstrated that the methanol extract of N. indica inhibited the activity of tyrosinases, tyrosine related protein (TRP)1 and TRP2, and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, as well as the activity of protein kinase A, by effectively inhibiting cyclic adenosine monophosphate. Although the biological activities of N. indica extract have been reported, there are no reports on the skin bioactivity of the main compound(s) on human keratinocytes. This study investigated the anti-inflammatory and moisturizing effects of quercetin 3,7-dimethyl ether 4&prime, glucoside (QDG) isolated from N. indica. In brief, ultraviolet B irradiated keratinocytes were pretreated with different concentrations of QDG, and the effects of QDG on various inflammatory markers were determined. QDG significantly inhibited inflammation-related cytokines and chemokines and enhanced the activation of skin barrier factors. Additionally, QDG also attenuated phosphorylation inhibition of the upstream cytokines and nuclear factor-&kappa, B expression. These results suggest that QDG isolated from N. indica may serve as a potential source of bioactive substances for chronic inflammatory skin diseases.

A specific segment of the 24 fold segmented HPGe detector was studied for improving the interaction position resolution from several cm to mm. The segmented HPGe detector was modeled by CAD program with their electrodes which was isolated by the Boolean function. The Shockley-Ramo theorem changed the Gauss law to Laplace equation problem for calculating the induced charge on each electrode. Finite Element Method solved the Poisson and Laplace equation with their boundary conditions for Electric field and potential. The drift velocities of charge carriers were compared between both along the 100 > and one between 100 > and 110 > Ge crystal axis at a specific segment and used to simulate the pulse shapes with 1 mm position resolution. Coincidence system between a specific segment and 3 × 3 HPGe detector verified the simulated pulse shapes by comparing these with the experimental ones which are generated at the specific target region with a fixed scattering angle. The experimental and simulated ones were χ 2 fitted to find the least χ 2 value and locate the interaction positions. The interaction positions of experimental pulse shapes were analyzed statistically after the rise time correction along 100 > and 110 > Ge crystal axis. The position resolution as FWHM on x, y, and z axis is the 3.12, 4.38 and 8.69 mm with the collimator size 3, 6, and 6 mm, respectively.

A polyphasic approach was used to characterize a novel nitrogen-fixing bacterial strain, designated YC6995(T), isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Iris ensata var. spontanea (Makino) Nakai inhabiting a wetland located at an altitude of 960 m on Jiri Mountain, Korea. Strain YC6995(T) cells were Gram-negative, and rod-shaped, with motility provided by a single polar flagellum. Optimal growth conditions were 30 °C and pH 7.0. The major fatty acids of strain YC6995(T) were C18:1 ω7c, C18:1 2-OH and C16:0 3-OH. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10 (Q-10). The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidyldimethylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol and unidentified glycolipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 64.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed strain YC6995(T) to form a phyletic lineage with Nitrospirillum amazonense DSM 2787(T) with a high sequence similarity (97.2 %), but it displayed low sequence similarity with other remotely related genera, including Azospirillum (

The electron donating ability, elastase inhibitory, pro- collagen synthesis and Matrix metalloprotease-1 (MMP-1) activities were measured in order to verify the anti-wrinkle properties of extracts from Buplerum falcatum as a functional ingredient for cosmetic products. Electron donating ability and elastase inhibition activities were 80 and 52% at a dose of 1,000 µg/mL of B. falcatum 70% ethanol extract. Pro-collagen synthesis was increased with the increase concentration of B. falcatum extract on CCD-986sk in addition to decrease the amount of protein of MMP-1. The results suggested that B. falcatum extract can be used to reduced electron donating ability, elastase, pro-collagen synthesis and MMP-1 activity and is a potential candidate for cosmedical materials.

In this study, the antioxidant and anti-wrinkling effects of fraction from Vitex trifolia L. were investigated. Among the fractions, ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest antioxidant activities in 1-1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl, 2,2'-azino-bis(3- ethylbenzothiazoine-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging and elastase inhibition with 76, 89, and 74%, respectively, at a concentration of 1,000 µg/mL. This fraction, at the concentration of 25 µg/mL, inhibited 70% fibroblast cell viability and 86% the matrix metalloprotease (MMP)-1. In addition, the results from Western blot assay showed that this fraction (25 µg/mL) expressed the MMP-1 protein level by decreasing 50%. The findings suggest that the ethyl acetate fraction from V. trifolia has great potential as a cosmeceutical ingredient with antioxidant and anti-wrinkling effects.

We discuss a new method to incorporate Type B uncertainty into least-squares procedures. The new method is based on an extension of the likelihood function from which a conventional least-squares function is derived. The extended likelihood function is the product of the original likelihood function with additional PDFs (Probability Density Functions) that characterize the Type B uncertainties. The PDFs are considered to describe one's incomplete knowledge on correction factors being called nuisance parameters. We use the extended likelihood function to make point and interval estimations of parameters in the basically same way as the least-squares function used in the conventional least-squares method is derived. Since the nuisance parameters are not of interest and should be prevented from appearing in the final result, we eliminate such nuisance parameters by using the profile likelihood. As an example, we present a case study for a linear regression analysis with a common component of Type B uncertainty. In this example we compare the analysis results obtained from using our procedure with those from conventional methods.

The purpose of this study is to employ a method called ‘conflict impact assessment’ to analyze the progress, background, cause and relevant issues of conflicts related with affordable housing for youth (Happiness Housing Project), a project that has been implemented since last May 2013, thereby identifying the relevant problems and draw out objectives for improvement. The researchers expect that this study will contribute to solving the current issues regarding Happiness Housing, and contribute to improving the quality of the government’s policies. For the above purpose, literatures on Happiness Housing produced from August to November 2013 were reviewed, in-depth telephone or face-to-face interviews were conducted with personnel associated with project implementation in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation and LH, etc., and major interested parties including Yangcheon-gu residents. Key issues identified regarding Happiness Housing construction include: the way that the project was implemented, living quality of residents, impact on educational environment, inconsistence with existing plans, relatively high construction cost, insolvency of public corporations, land use fee issue with Korail, need of preliminary feasibility survey, securing sufficient amount for supply and issue of additional designation, likelihood of finishing construction in time and issues related with actual source of demand, etc. Through analysis of conflict development and positions of interested parties, the main causes of the conflicts were identified as follows: lack of deliberation on pledges during election, lack of viability review on pledges, lack of conflict management plans, one-way implementation without consent of interested parties, project plans established with no regard to local circumstances, frequent project revision, underwehlming level of conflict management. This paper presents the reinforcing effects of the inclusion of short polypropylene fibers on recycled foamed asphalt (RFA) mixture. Short polypropylene fibers of 10 mm length with a 0.15% by weight mixing ratio of the fiber to the asphalt binder were used. The Marshall stability test, the indirect tensile strength test, the resilient modulus test, and wheel tracking test of the RFA mixtures were conducted. The test results were compared to find out the reinforcing effects of the inclusion of the fiber and the other mixtures, which included the conventional recycled foamed asphalt (RFA) mixtures; the cement reinforced recycled foamed asphalt (CRFA) mixtures; the semihot recycled foamed asphalt (SRFA) mixtures; and recycled hot-mix asphalt (RHMA) mixtures. It is found that the FRFA mixture shows higher Marshall stability than the RFA and SRFA mixtures, higher indirect tensile strength than the RFA mixture, and higher rut resistance than the RFA, SRFA, and RHMA mixtures as seen from the wheel tracking test.

A novel bacterial strain, YC7001T, was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of rice collected at Jinju, Korea, and was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Cells of strain YC7001Twere Gram-negative-staining, yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped, aerobic, heterotrophic and non-motile. Strain YC7001Tgrew optimally at 25–30 °C, pH 5.0–8.0 and degraded gelatin, cellulose and chitin. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YC7001Tbelonged to the genusChitinophagain the familyChitinophagaceae. The most closely related species wereChitinophaga sanctiNBRC 15057T(96.9 %),Chitinophaga ginsengisoliGsoil 052T(95.9 %),Chitinophaga pinensisDSM 2588T(95.7 %),Chitinophaga filiformisIFO 15056T(95.7 %) andChitinophaga niabensisJS13-10T(95.0 %). The DNA–DNA relatedness value of strain YC7001TwithC. sanctiNBRC 15057Twas 15.2±0.6 %. Strain YC7001Tcontained MK-7 as the major menaquinone and homospermidine as the major polyamine. The major fatty acids of strain YC7001Twere C15 : 0iso, C16 : 1ω5cand C17 : 0iso 3-OH. The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, unknown aminolipids and unknown lipids. The total genomic DNA G+C content was 41.3 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses, strain YC7001Trepresents a novel species of the genusChitinophaga, in the familyChitinophagaceae, for which the nameChitinophaga oryziterraesp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YC7001T( = KACC 14533T = JCM 16595T).

Rating system, which generated by struggling and negotiating of many social groups, helps us to anyalyze plenty of social factors. With this point of view this article attempts to examine the game rating system of Iran, that started in 2009. At the beginning, the nubmber and ratio of prohibited games were very high. Most prohibited games have contents of violence with religious distortion or women's nudity. But recently the case of prohibition is not seen and the ratio of age rate is changed to that of other countries. Puerarin (P), an isoflavone derived from kudzu roots, has strong biological activities, but its bioavailability is often limited by its low water solubility. To increase its solubility, P was glucosylated by three dextransucrases from Leuconostoc or Streptococcus species. Leuconostoc lactis EG001 dextransucrase exhibited the highest productivity of puerarin glucosides (P-Gs) among the three tested enzymes, and it primarily produced two P-Gs with a 53% yield. Their structures were identified as alpha-D-glucosyl-(1-->6)-P (P-G) by using LC-MS or (1)H- or (13)C-NMR spectroscopies and alpha-D-isomaltosyl-(1-->6)-P (P-IG2) by using specific enzymatic hydrolysis, and their solubilities were 15- and 202-fold higher than that of P, respectively. P-G and P-IG2 are easily applicable in the food and pharmaceutical industries as alternative functional materials.

This study was carried out to discover the skin wrinkle reducing components in the seeds of Arctium lappa. The isolation of a methylene chloride-soluble fraction of 70% ethanol extract from the seeds of Arctium lappa using a procollagen type-1 synthesis and MMP-1 activity resulted in the isolation and identification of four lignin compounds: arctiin, arctigenin, matairesinol, and diarctigenin. All structures were confirmed via NMR and MS spectroscopic data. To determine cell viability and procollagen type-1 synthesis, human dermal fibroblasts were treated with 10-100 μM. As a result, none of the four compounds showed cytotoxicity up to 50 μM. We also investigated their procollagen type-1 synthesis and MMP-1 inhibition activity and found that arctiin had the highest activity in terms of both procollagen synthesis and MMP-1 inhibition among all four compounds. Putting all the data together, we suggest that arctiin be used in cosmetics as an anti-wrinkle material.

137Cs was measured in soil samples collected in Korea from 2006 to 2008 using a low-level background gamma-ray spectrometer that was designed and developed by KRISS (Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science). The objectives of this study are to evaluate the newly developed low-level background gamma-ray spectrometer and, consequently, to provide information on the horizontal and vertical distribution of 137Cs in Korean soil. 137Cs concentrations in surface soil varied from 12.8 ± 0.9 to 108 ± 4 Bq kg−1, and the vertical profiles of 137Cs from the Nari basin in Ulleung Island in the East Sea/Sea of Japan and Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, Jeju Island, showed a higher concentration in the surface layer that gradually decreased with depth. On the other hand, the 137Cs concentration in soil samples collected from Bukhan Mountain National Park in Seoul showed a subsurface maximum and decreased with depth. The 137Cs inventories in the soil column were calculated to be 1,830–4,360 Bq m−2 with a mean of 2,770 Bq m−2, which was the same order of magnitude as the global fallout inventories in the mid-latitude region of the Northern Hemisphere.

TPDex, a putative dextranase from Thermoanaerobacter pseudethanolicus, was purified as a single 70 kDa band of 7.37 U/mg. Its optimum pH was 5.2 and the enzyme was stable between pH 3.1 and 8.5 at 70 degrees C. A half-life comparison showed that TPDex was stable for 7.4 h at 70 degrees C, whereas Chaetominum dextranase (CEDex), currently used as a dextranase for sugar milling, was stable at 55 degrees C. TPDex showed broad dextranase activity regardless of dextran types, including dextran T2000, 742CB dextran, and alternan. TPDex showed the highest thermostability among the characterized dextranases, and may be a suitable enzyme for use in sugar manufacture without decreased temperature.

This study involved observation of the inhibitory effect of 70% EtOH and water extracts from Doinseunggitang on melanin synthesis, tyrosinase activity, and western blotting using B16F10 melanoma cells. Doinseunggitang extracts inhibited melanin synthesis and tyrosinase activity in a dependent manner. As a result, it was found that Doinseunggitang 70% EtOH extracts inhibit melanin synthesis and tyrosinase activity, respectively, by 40% and 51%. In addition, western blotting analysis showed that 70% EtOH extracts inhibited tyrosinase, MITF, TRP-1, and TRP-2 expression. These results show that 70% ethanol extracts of Doinseunggitang could be developed as a skin whitening material in cosmetics.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the skin depigmentation effect of the extracts of three herbs, Carthamus tinctorius seed, Cyperus rotundus and Schizonepeta tenuifolia. Their effects on tyrosinase and melanin synthesis inhibitory action were assessed. We found that the C. tinctorius seed ethanol extracts reduced the tyrosinase activity and melanin formation of B16F10 melanoma cells. The C. tinctorius seed suppressed the expression in microphthalmia associated transcription factor (MITF), tyrosinase, tyrosinase related protein 1 (TRP-1), and tyrosinase related protein 2 (TRP-2) in B16F10 melanoma cells. These results show that C. tinctorius seed inhibited melanogenesis on the B16F10 melanoma cell. The underlying mechanism of C. tinctorius seed whitening activity may be the inhibition of tyrisinase, MITF, tyrosinase, TRP-1, and TRP-2 expression. The results suggested that C. tinctorius seed has considerable potential as a natural functional ingredient with a depigmentation effect.

The evaluation of various color coating methods for color maintenance of color asphalt pavement is conducted using the laboratory and field tests on the bus lane. The surface of color asphalt constructed on the bus lane is deteriorated such as changing color and decoloration and abrasion due to the passing of the traffic and time. The total of 9 coating methods were evaluated in this study. The laboratory tests included Ultra violet test, adhesion test and Taber abrasion test and the field tests were british pendulum test and visual survey. The results of tests showed that the different methods showed the their own engineering characteristics and it is dependant upon the main material used. The rubber epoxy material for the main material showed the satisfactory result among the methods tested. However, the performance of the coating methods after 100days are not satisfactory, decoloration, abrasion and peeling up are investigated and need to be studied for the further application in the field.

Greimas`s Carre Semiotique, as Floch showed in his analysis of car, has much effectiveness not only in theoritical aspect but also in practical aspect. This paper used his theory to analysis the value system of MMORPG. Lineage, the game known as representative game of `nogada`, was the starting point. WOW is supposed to have opposition relation with lineage and Ragnarok contradiction relation, and Mabinogi non contradiction relation. As well as games, the concepts that match to `nogada` of lineage are also supposed. The value system of games is expected to be useful in further systematic analysis of games and also in practical area of design and marketing.

This study was carried out to search for natural anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds from 5 medicinal plants (Carthamus tinctorius seed, Cyperus rotundus, Schizonepeta tenuifolia, Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum, and Paeonia lactiflora). These plants were extracted with 70% ethanol. In order to measure total antioxidant activity of flavonoids, polyphenol content was measured. Radical scavenging activities of extracts were examined using a-a-Diphenyl-βpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH·), 2,2-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS·), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and superoxide anion radical assays. C. tinctorius seed extracts showed the highest polyphenol and flavonoid contents as well as strong DPPH·, ABTS·, FRAP, and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity. Also, C. tinctorius seed extracts showed the highest nitric oxide (NO) production inhibitory effect. Theses results indicate that the C. tinctorius seed extracts can be used as a functional material due to their effective anti-oxidative and antiinflammatory activities.

This article inspected 16 game rating systems in the world to find out the trends of those. Mainly the perspective of freedom of expression is used to find out the implications of the trends. As the position of game becomes higher, the increase of game specialty rating institutions, the augmentation of self regulations rating institutions, the enlargement of freedom of expression in the area of game are revealed as trends. These trends are in the natural order of events that match with the development of game. We could know that rapid change and innovation is much needed.

This article attempts to analyze story of computer game by structuralistic storytelling model. The storytelling model is mainly used in traditional media. But the model is made not only by analyzing the text of story but also chasing the human psychological instinct, so I thought that it is applicable to computer games. Tetris, one of classical game was the object of analysis in this article. As a result, the 7 archetype and 12 journey of hero storytelling model were also available in tetris. The characteristic that the game user becomes protagonist itself must have been taken into account while analyzing game.

Biological activities of sarcocarp and calyx of persimmon (Cheongdo Bansi) were investigated. The electron donating ability of the calyx extract was 91% at a 500 level, which was higher than that of the sarcocarp extract (40%). The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of calyx extracts was about 22% at a 1,000 level. During the entire experimental period, there was no cytotoxicity found from sarcocarp and calyx up to 50 . Our results indicated that sarcocarp and calyx significantly inhibited NO production and iNOS and COX-2 expression accompanied by an attenuation of interleukin (IL)-, IL-6, and tumer necrosis factor (TNF)- formation in human keratinocyte. These results suggest that sarcocarp and calyx of persimmon may have significant effect on inflammatory factors and can be used as potential anti-inflammatory agents.

Ionizing radiation can be used to improve the color of green tea extract to brighter. As a result, the irradiated green tea extract can be applied easier and broader in food or cosmetic industry. To confirm the retention of the biological activities of the cosmetic products added with green tea polyphenols (PPs), the real cosmetic products including a skin lotion (PS) and an essence (PE) cream were manufactured. Irradiation also applied to the manufactured cosmetic products to see their improvement of color and changes of biological activity. The PP showed 72% of electron donating ability (EDA) at a 5 ppm concentration and the PS and PE containing 2% PP showed higher than 60%, which was similar inhibition activity to vitamin C. The inhibition of superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of PP, PS, and PE were higher than 55% at a 500 ppm concentration and the inhibition of xanthine oxidase (XOase) were also higher than 65% at a 200 ppm concentration. The measurement of lipid oxidation by addition of Cu 2+ and Fe 2+ as prooxidants showed that PP and PS had higher metal chelating ability for Fe 2+ than that of PE and the ability increased by increase of polyphenol concentration isolated from green tea. The Cu 2+ chelating ability of PP and PS showed higher than 90% at a 200 ppm concentration. Therefore, it is concluded that addition of PP in manufacturing PS and PE retains its biological activities including EDA, inhibition of XOase and SOD-like activity, and metal chelating ability in the manufactured cosmetic products. In addition, irradiation of PS and PE improved color of the products containing PP brighter without any adverse changes in biological activity of the products.

The 4 π β ( LS ) ‐ γ coincidence counting system of KRISS (Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science) has been operated in the analog signal-processing mode. We develop and implement a digital sampling method using a commercially available analog to digital converter. In the implementation, we digitize the amplified pulse trains generated from three detector channels and determine the locations and amplitudes of peaks using a peak detection algorithm. We develop offline analysis routines to process the recorded locations and amplitudes for activity determinations by means of the efficiency-extrapolation method. In the activity determinations we can make corrections for the effects of out-of-channel events and correlation between data points. We validate the digital sampling method by measuring 60 Co activity and comparing the measurement results with those obtained in the analog mode. The digital method is capable of facilitating the activity standardization of radionuclides with very short half-lives.

We developed a new 4πβ (LS)-γ coincidence counting system to be used for radionuclide standardization. The liquid scintillation detector used in this system enables the easy preparation of sources without self-absorption. A special β- β coincidence technique is implemented to suppress large thermal and electronic noises, resulting in a higher coincidence efficiency and reduced uncertainty in the measurements of low-energy beta-emitting radionuclides. The system is commissioned with the activity measurement of 60Co. The measured activity is derived with 90% efficiency for the β-ray detection.

An endophytic bacterial strain, Arthrobacter humicola YC6002, was isolated from a surface sterilized root of Korean turf grass (Zoysia japonica) collected from Jinju, Korea. This strain showed inhibitory effect on germination and shoot growth of radish. The inhibition of germination and shoot growth of radish seeds varied depending on the age of culture and the temperature at which it was incubated. The culture filtrate of 1/10- strength Tryptic Soy Broth medium, incubated for 48 hours at 30oC, showed the highest inhibitory effect on radish seed germination and shoot growth (92% inhibition as compared to control). The active compound with seed germination and shoot growth inhibition was purified and identified as 3-phenylpropionic acid. The purified compound had 53% and 93% inhibitory effect on seed germination and shoot growth of radish for 500 and 1000 ppm solutions, respectively.
