Composed in 2017, Brass Quintet has four movements which may be performed as stand-alone pieces: March; Waltz; Soliloquy, Finale. Parts are available from the composer.The first movement, March, opens with a quirky introduction in 5/8. The march tune then enters in the trumpets with a traditional 2/4 rhythm. This section is followed by a contrasting 5/8, featuring mutes, foot stomps and glissandi. The march again returns, and then once again the 5/8 material, with both motives joining together in a rousing climax.Waltz is Satie-like in nature, with the opening melody played by the first trumpet. In ABA form, the middle section is faster and features the horn, then the trombone, leading the melody. In the last section, the opening material returns in a gentle, quietly beautiful, finish.Soliloquy is freely written, with the horn first presenting the whole-tone melody. The material is developed between the instruments, with the second tune being an inversion of the first. Soliloquy is a finely-balanced movement, with all instruments equally taking part in telling the story.Finale opens with a 16th-note motive which then becomes the accompanying pattern to the jaunty 12/8 melody. It is contrasted with a syncopated section loosely influenced by the 5/8 material of the March. Mutes and foot stomps feature in this syncopated section in which each instrument takes the lead, and then they all pile in on top of one another in layers of exuberant sound

Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) can achieve high-precision and non-scanning 3D imaging. However, as a holographic imaging technology, the huge bandwidth requirements and the amount of holographic data transmitted have always been one of the important factors limiting its application. In addition, the hardware cost of pixel array-based CCD or CMOS imaging is very high under high resolution or specific wavelength conditions. Accordingly, a single-pixel Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (SP-FINCH) compressed imaging method is proposed, which replaces pixel array detector with single-pixel detector and designs a Trumpet network to achieve low-cost and high-resolution imaging. Firstly, a modified FINCH imaging system is constructed and data acquisition is carried out using a single-pixel detector. Secondly, a Trumpet network is constructed to directly map the relationship between one-dimensional sampled data and two-dimensional image in an end-to-end manner. Moreover, by comparing the reconstructed images using neural network with that using commonly used single-pixel reconstruction methods, the results indicate that the proposed SP-FINCH compressed imaging method can significantly improve the quality of image reconstruction at lower sampling rate and achieve imaging without phase-shifting operation. Situating affect in the soundscapes of suona as a Chinese musical instrument in various media, this study investigates how these mediated soundscapes shape social ideologies, hierarchies of cultures, and social resistance in ancient and contemporary China. Several mediated soundscapes are tapped into, including (1) the poem titled "To the Tune of Seeing the Emperor-Ode to the Trumpet"; (2) a TV program demonstrating how suona can be "languaging" in localized contexts; (3) a famous movie titled "Song of the Phoenix" capturing the contestation of affective regimes represented by the Chinese conventional versus the Western modern; (4) works of a well-known rock band, the Second-Hand Rose, showing how two differing affective regimes were conflated. In examining these mediated soundscapes, this study showcases how stratifications of cultures as the high versus the low, the conventional versus the modern, vernacularism versus globalism are constructed, resisted, and transmuted via competition and conflation of affective regimes in Chinese media. The present research analyses the growing popularity of the trumpet musical instrument in modern Chinese music. The research purpose is to examine the use of the technique of polyphony in trumpet players and its impact on the creative development of trumpet students. The sample consisted of 496 Chinese trumpeters who participated in brass band festivals. The creative abilities of students were assessed using the following psychodiagnostic methods: Readiness for self-development test, Imagination test, Test questionnaire by Davis to measure creativity; Creative Thinking Test developed by Torrance and Bruner method to assess the types of thinking and creativity. The results showed a statistically valid and significant performance improvement creativity and creative abilities of the studied students of the experimental group, who performed polyphonic pieces of music for a month, as well as increased motivation for further self-knowledge and self-development. The research found an increase in the trumpeters who had a high level of creative potential (from 20.6% to 34.8%). Quantity trumpeters with low creativity decreased from 14.6% to 6.5%. This study explores the strange/queer temporalities in Jackie Kay's novel Trumpet and investigates how transgender experiences and narratives can effectively subvert the prevailing view of time as a linear and normative concept. Taking the initial cue from Sara Ahmed's concept of "Queer Vandalism", which underscores marginalised identities' deliberate resistance against societal constructs, the study centres on Kay's protagonist, Joss Moody, a transgender jazz trumpeter, and examines the tension between individual identity and societal conformity in relation to time. Diverging from mainstream representations of transgender individuals, which often risk pathologising their experiences, Kay's novel vividly illustrates how Joss Moody defies norms by living as a man while biologically female, bringing into plain view societal reactions when his female body is posthumously revealed. A special emphasis is placed on the transformative role of Jazz in Joss's self-reconstruction and temporal liberation. In the charged religious context of post-Reformation Germany, debate ensued about the power of weather bells to disperse the thunderstorms traditionally thought to be the work of demons and witches. Catholics and Protestants alike inherited medieval notions of demonic agency in the atmosphere, but they differed on the appropriate remedy. Protestant critics ridiculed the consecration of bells as a corruption of baptism and rejected their sonic agency as a violation of God’s providence, retaining weather bells as a compulsion to the collective prayer that alone could assuage God’s wrath. Defenders of Catholic practice, however, rehearsed medieval arguments for bell apotropaism and insisted on their efficacy against storms, appealing variously to their consecration or to the prayer they compelled. If published Catholic opinion shifted markedly against apotropaic sound in the Enlightenment, local populations continued to hear weather bells in traditional ways, and to posit bells as powerful deterrents against demonic listeners. Visual detection of fingering on the trumpet is an increasingly interesting topic in music research. The ability to recognize and track the movements of the trumpet player’s fingers during the performance of a musical piece can provide valuable information for analyzing and improving instrument technique. However, this is a largely unexplored task, as most works focus on audio quality rather than instrument fingering techniques. Developing techniques for identifying essential finger positions on a musical instrument is crucial, as poor fingering techniques can harm instrument performance. In this work, we propose the visual detection of this fingering using convolutional neural networks with a proprietary dataset created for this purpose. The following case vignette exemplifies how the terror of war can divide even the closest of communities, compatriots, colleagues, friends, families, and uproots our very notion of who we are and who we will become. A shared powerlessness is the very place where this therapist and patient meet—a place of surrendering to the overwhelming losses that are already here and that trumpet losses soon to come. The condition for healing for both therapist and patient is found in each partner's capacity to be with another, and all that spontaneously moves through them. Staying close to her moving-sensing experiences, the therapist offers herself as possible steady ground for the patient, who eventually reciprocates in kind. Cryptocoryne zamboangaensis, is described as a new water trumpet species discovered by citizen scientists in the streams of Zamboanga del Norte, southwestern Philippines. It resembles C. aponogetifolia in having a spathe tube longer than spathe limb, but differs significantly by its ovate, densely verrucose bright purple limb with a narrow collar. A preliminary analysis of the conservation status and a dichotomous key to the species of the genus in the Philippines are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A famous Italian scholar Giovanni Evangelista Torricelli is most famous for his physical discoveries. Nevertheless, nowadays it is less known that he dealt with mathematics as well. This article is devoted to his several mathematics results. After a short historical introduction, the author gives the construction of Torricelli's point in a triangle; further he describes an interesting geometrical figure, Torricelli's trumpet, and its analogy, created by rotation of Cissoid of Diocles. In this study, the apparent variation ranges of acoustical parameters were investigated in a concert hall. The initial time delay gap (ITDG) was evaluated in terms of its just noticeable difference (JND) through two instruments, the cello and the trumpet. Even though the IDTG values were prolonged over the measurements and were not significantly varied, an ITDG range of 22–220 ms in increments of 91 steps was produced electro-acoustically in an anechoic chamber. The result of JNDc (Δgap/gap) was rated by 50% "different" judgement ranges for the cello and trumpet tracks, respectively. The effective duration of the autocorrection function (ACF) of the continuous brainwaves (CBWs) within the alpha (8–13 Hz) frequency range in the left hemisphere responding to 91-step ITDG increments revealed that the continuous ratios of τe_min ((τe_min_rear − τe_min_front)/τe_min_front) of CBWs were constantly on the trumpet. Furthermore, a homologous period of resonance between the subjective JNDc and τe values of the ACF of CBWs in the alpha range allowed us to conclude that the subjective JND of the ITDG in a room was related to the W_IACC value of the interaural cross-correlation function, which reflected the characteristics of source signals themselves and aroused the activities of the brain in the right hemisphere (p < 0.01). Using Anne Carson's concepts of 'cliché', 'catastrophe', 'silence', and 'translation' as a framework, I will trace the ways in which my collaboration with Éliane Radigue on her composition OCCAM X for solo trumpet encouraged me to rethink my practice as an instrumentalist and improviser. Studies of alien aquatic invertebrates in 2021-2022 covered fresh marine and transitional waters mostly within the boundaries of the Danube Biosphere Reserve. As a result of these studies, important new findings of six species of aquatic macroinvertebrates were obtained: Menetus dilatatus (Gould, 1841) is first indicated for the Danube Basin, and three marine species (Arcuatula senhousia (Benson, 1842), Polydora cornuta Bosc, 1802 and Streblospio gynobranchiata Rice & Levin, 1998) for the first time for Ukrainian Danube Delta. For two species (Pectinatella magnifica (Leidy, 1851) and Ferrissia californica (Rowell, 1863)), new localities were found within the delta. In the case of M. dilatatus, the pathway of entry into the Danube Delta is an absolute mystery. The most likely pathway of dispersal of this species is natural dispersion, both along the river network and associated with waterfowl, however, the large distance between the Danube Delta and the nearest locations in Western Ukraine makes direct transportation unlikely. In all probability, the similarity of this species with local species leads to the formation of cryptic populations, not identified by researchers, which may be intermediate stages of species expansion towards the Northern Black Sea area. We study the end of the world (EOW) brane in double scaled SYK (DSSYK) model. We find that the boundary state of EOW brane is a coherent state of the q-deformed oscillators and the associated orthogonal polynomial is the continuous big q-Hermite polynomial. In a certain scaling limit, the big q-Hermite polynomial reduces to the Whittaker function, which reproduces the wavefunction of JT gravity with an EOW brane. We also compute the half-wormhole amplitude in DSSYK and show that the amplitude is decomposed into the trumpet and the factor coming from the EOW brane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the benefits of learning an instrument, many students drop out early because it can be frustrating for the student, expensive for the caregiver, and loud for the household. Virtual Reality (VR) and Extended Reality (XR) offer the potential to address these challenges by simulating multiple instruments in an engaging and motivating environment through headphones. To assess the potential for commercial VR to augment musical experiences, we used standard VR implementation processes to design four virtual trumpet interfaces: camera-tracking with tracked register selection (two ways), camera-tracking with voice activation, and a controller plus a force-feedback haptic glove. To evaluate these implementations, we created a virtual music classroom that produces audio, notes, and finger pattern guides loaded from a selected Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) file. We analytically compared these implementations against physical trumpets (both acoustic and MIDI), considering features of ease of use, familiarity, playability, noise, and versatility. The physical trumpets produced the most reliable and familiar experience, and some XR benefits were considered. The camera-based methods were easy to use but lacked tactile feedback. The haptic glove provided improved tracking accuracy and haptic feedback over camera-based methods. Each method was also considered as a proof-of-concept for other instruments, real or imaginary. A new Sulu Archipelago endemic species, Cryptocoryne vinzelii, is herein described and illustrated discovered by a citizen scientist in the island of Basilan. A detailed description, colour plates, phenology, distribution and a provisional conservation status are presented. With the recent discovery of a new species, the biodiversity of the Philippines has expanded, revealing a total of 10 distinct Cryptocoryne taxa, of which nine are known to be endemic. This study aims to determine the effect of physical and psychological movement coordination on musical performance. This investigation also investigates the impact of mental tension on musical performance. This investigation has collected quantitative data on Likert scale 7-point questionnaire. This study's population consisted of trumpet players, and Smart PLS 3.0 was used to evaluate the measurement and structural models. This research has determined that the coordination of physical and psychological movements significantly affects musical performance. In addition, this study determined that when playing the trumpet, positive tension can make the performer concentrate and concentrate on performing, which is conducive to the play of the performance level and can also better interpret musical works. The research has demonstrated that in trumpet performance, the change of pitch, timbre, and intonation is primarily controlled by the coordination and cooperation of the physiological and psychological causes of stage tension in trumpet playing. Biological computation is becoming a viable and fast-growing alternative to traditional electronic computing. Here we present a biocomputing technology called Trumpet: Transcriptional RNA Universal Multi-Purpose GatE PlaTform. Trumpet combines the simplicity and robustness of the simplest in vitro biocomputing methods, adding signal amplification and programmability, while avoiding common shortcomings of live cell-based biocomputing solutions. We have demonstrated the use of Trumpet to build all universal Boolean logic gates. We have also built a web-based platform for designing Trumpet gates and created a primitive processor by networking several gates as a proof-of-principle for future development. The Trumpet offers a change of paradigm in biocomputing, providing an efficient and easily programmable biological logic gate operating system. Biological computation is becoming a viable and fast-growing alternative to traditional electronic computing. Seed health testing, using the blotter method, revealed some fungal growth on the seed surface of one accession of Indian trumpet flower/Broken bones tree (Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz) collected from Kokrajhar, Assam, India. The fungus was identified as Diaporthe phaseolorum (Cooke & Ellis) Sacc. based on morphological characters. Later, the identity was re-confirmed by DNA sequencing using ITS gene sequencing (NCBI Sequence Id: MT154253.1) and a large subunit of rRNA (NCBI Sequence Id: OL798081.1). Literature reveals that D. phaseolorum is a destructive pathogen causing severe yield losses in various host crops. However, detection of D. phaseolorum in Indian trumpet flower seed followed by pathogenicity on its seedlings confirms that O. indicum is a new host record. Being a destructive pathogen of several other crops, such as seed decay and stem canker in soybean, it may pose a serious threat to future cultivation of this herbal plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

President Trump and Prime Minister Modi often invoked their two nation's claims as "oldest and largest" democracies to trumpet the naturalness of the US-India alliance. Shared democratic values was the glue that supposedly bound the two countries together. This contribution argues that the cynical and opportunistic invocation of democratic values by both governments damaged the cause of democracy globally. Both have attacked the independence of the press, civil society, and judiciary; and democratic backsliding and religious intolerance has worsened in both countries. The legitimacy of America's democratic credentials, already battered by Trump, is irreparably tainted by its embrace of Modi's India. This article is dedicated to sound signalling in the history as one of the ways of non-verbal communication of a community. Due to the extensiveness of the subject matter, the author significantly narrowed down the analysis. She based her description on word formation issues rather than phraseological units, metaphorisations. She endeavoured to demonstrate that the point of view is also important in descriptions of phenomena bordering on language and culture. Her interests include word-formation nests of three instrument names: a bell, a trumpet, and a drum. The analysis concentrated on three fundamental functions of the enumerated instruments, functions displayed by word-formation devices: announcing, publicising information; summoning, gathering, calling people; excluding from the community. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY IS TO UNDERSTAND how timbre semantic associations—for example, a sound’s timbre perceived as bright, rough, or hollow—vary with register and pitch height across instruments. In this experiment, 540 online participants rated single, sustained notes from eight Western orchestral instruments (flute, oboe, bass clarinet, trumpet, trombone, violin, cello, and vibraphone) across three registers (low, medium, and high) on 20 semantic scales derived from Reymore and Huron (2020). The 24 two-second stimuli, equalized in loudness, were produced using the Vienna Symphonic Library. Exploratory modeling examined relationships between mean ratings of each semantic dimension and instrument, register, and participant musician identity (‘‘musician’’ vs. ‘‘nonmusician’’). For most semantic descriptors, both register and instrument were significant predictors, though the amount of variance explained differed (marginal R2). Terms that had the strongest positive relationships with register include shrill/harsh/noisy, sparkling/brilliant/bright, ringing/long decay, and percussive. Terms with the strongest negative relationships with register include deep/thick/heavy, raspy/grainy/gravelly, hollow, and woody. Post hoc modeling using only pitch height and only register to predict mean semantic rating suggests that pitch height may explain more variance than does register. Results help clarify the influence of both instrument and relative register (and pitch height) on common timbre semantic associations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of this research study was to determine the relationship between the airway anatomy of university trumpet players and their performance skills. Following reliability studies, three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography scans of 66 university Caucasian trumpet players were analyzed. The most constricted area of the airway (MCA), airway dimensions (length and volume) of the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, oropharynx, maxillary sinuses, prevertebral soft tissue thickness, and neck circumference were measured. The same players played a quantitative skills test to measure their technical performance skills (flexibility; single, double, triple and flutter tonguing; endurance; and high and low range). The results of the skills test and airway measurements were compared (Spearman's correlation) accepting a 5% significance level for all comparisons. Results: The nasal cavity volume significantly correlated with flexibility, double and triple tonguing and flutter tonguing in high range. Measurements of oropharynx volume, total airway volume, and most constricted area significantly correlated with low range skill. High range skill significantly correlated with multiple measurements: soft tissue thickness AA, soft tissue thickness CV 2ia, airway length, and neck circumference. Airway length also significantly correlated with flutter tonguing in high range and endurance skills. Although the significance levels were all high, the correlations were weak in many cases. Conclusion: Various aspects of the airway anatomy were related to technical skills of trumpet performance. Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent neurotoxin responsible for a human intoxication event in Spain associated with the consumption of trumpet shell Charonia lampas. In Europe, TTX is not regulated or monitored, and there is little knowledge about its presence in seafood. Here, we investigated the tissue distribution of TTX and analogues in three specimens of trumpet shell C. lampas bought in a market in southern Portugal. Toxin concentration was above the EFSA recommended limit in the non-edible tissues of all specimens and within the limit in the edible tissues of two specimens. 4,9-AnhydroTTX and 13 additional TTX analogues were detected in tissues, the most abundant being anhydrotrideoxyTTX and trideoxyTTX. These results suggest that although thorough evisceration may lower the amount of TTX consumed, it may not be sufficient to ensure consumer safety. Regular monitoring of TTX and analogues in trumpet shell and other edible gastropods is therefore recommended to avoid poisoning incidents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this work is to estimate by inverse problem lip parameters values of trumpet model so that the oscillation thresholds for successive playing registers occur for the same blowing pressure as the one measured on several trumpet players. The lips vibration is modeled through an oscillator including unknown parameters such as resonance frequency, quality factor, surface mass, stiffness, and opening at rest of the lips. The oscillation threshold is calculated through linear stability analysis of the outward-striking model including the nonlinear coupling with the bore of the trumpet. It appears that many combinations of parameter values are suitable to obtain the same blowing pressure at threshold as in the experiments. According to the analysis of the possible parameter values, some hypotheses are formulated about the playing strategies used by the trumpeter to select the different registers of the instrument. In addition to the resonance frequency of the lips, controlling the lips opening at rest appears to be a viable strategy to match experimental oscillation thresholds in terms of blowing pressure. In this work we use the modified replica trick, proposed in arXiv:2205.01150, to compute the late time behaviour of complexity for JT gravity with 풩 = 1 and 풩 = 2 supersymmetries. For the 풩 = 1 theory, we compute the late time behaviour of complexity defined by the "quenched geodesic length" and obtain the expected saturation of complexity at time t ~ e S 0 , to a constant value with time-independent variance. For the 풩 = 2 theory, we explicitly compute complexity at the disk level which yields the late-time linear growth of complexity. However, we comment on the expectation of the late-time saturation by speculating the trumpet partition function and the non-perturbative corrections to the spectral correlation, relevant for the late time behaviour of complexity.
