Any-mega development project, such as the Tarbela Dam, causes significant dislocation and relocation to human populations. The Tarbela Dam project involved relocation of more than 95,000 people. Besides housing, this relocation caused numerous social, economic, and cultural problems. This study was conducted in order to uncover a gender perspective on the Tarbela Dam relocation. This study employs a qualitative-ethnographic research design in order to collect data from the Tarbela Dam affectees. The location of the study was that of relocated communities in districts Haripur, Mansehra and Swabi. Data was collected through interview, FGD and observation. Reservoirs play a strategic role in the rapid monetary growth of the world by providing numerous benefits. However, the reduction in appropriate sites along with environmental and social apprehensions has resulted in curtailment of new reservoirs around the world in twenty-first century. There is a potential of benefits available from existing reservoirs which can be best capitalized through their optimized operation. Reservoirs Operation Optimization considering Sediment Evacuation (RESOOSE), recently developed model which combines multiple reservoirs operation and sediment evacuation with Genetic Algorithm based optimization module, has been used in the study. The objective of the study was to optimize the irrigation deficit through cascade reservoirs with consideration to hydropower, sediment evacuation and flood damages reduction benefits. The RESOOSE model was applied to optimize the irrigation deficits of Tarbela and Diamer Basha Reservoirs in Pakistan using developed objective function. The article computed and compared the benefits of optimized and existing rule curves. The hydropower benefits of 36.92 Billion Kw, sediment evacuation benefits of 21.534 Million m3 and flood damages of 616.19 Million US$ due to existing rule curves were considered as minimum benefits for achieving the optimized rule curves to minimize irrigation deficits. The developed optimized rule curves reduced the irrigation shortages of case study reservoirs from 6.9 to 5.8 Billion m3 (16% enhancement) annually as compared to existing rule curves. The optimized rule curves minimized the irrigation deficits by maintaining the existing benefits and without lowering the minimum operating levels of case study reservoirs. The study suggests change in existing rule curves of Tarbela and Diamer Basha Reservoirs due to less irrigation shortages. Sediment particles flowing through the turbine components erode the surface in interaction. Erosive wear of hydro turbine components generally depends on different parameters such as concentration, size and shape of the sediments particle, velocity of flow, properties of the base material of the turbine components and operating hours of the turbine. Tarbela Dam Hydel Project (TDHP) located in the Himalayan range in Pakistan is facing the same problem. The sediments particle have caused damage to the plant equipment, mainly to the turbine components; stay vanes, guide vanes, runner and draft tube. As a result, these components are disassembled and refurbished almost every year. Analysis have been performed on one of the Francis turbine units to predict the effect of sediment particles concentration, size and shape on erosion rate. Gradual removal of the base material has changed the profiles of various components of the turbine and also has weaken its structure. One of the major concerns of these effects is the continuous loss of turbine hydraulic efficiency. The governing equations of fluid flow are solved numerically on an unstructured grid using FEM based software ANSYS CFX. Finnie erosion model is used to compute average erosion rates. Simulation results are compared with the actual site data. This paper presents results of sediment and cavitation erosion through Tunnel 2 and Tunnel 3 of Tarbela Dam in Pakistan. Main bend and main branch of Tunnel 2 and outlet 1 and outlet 3 of Tunnel 3 are concluded to be critical for cavitation and sediment erosion. Studies are also performed for increased sediments flow rate, concluding 5 kg/sec as the critical value for sudden increase in erosion rate density. Erosion rate is concluded to be the function of sediment flow rate and head condition. Large-scale infrastructures are often understood by state planners as fulfilling a national integrative function. This paper challenges the idea of infrastructures as national integrators by engaging theories of state/nation formation and infrastructure in a postcolonial context. Specifically, I put Lefebvre's characterization of the production of state space as a homogenization-differentiation dialectic in conversation with Gramsci's understanding of hegemony, bureaucracy, and nationalism to analyze the controversy surrounding the giant Tarbela Dam in Pakistan in the 1960s. I use the Tarbela controversy as a case study to elaborate a theory of postcolonial nation-formation through state-led infrastructural projects. I argue that in a postcolonial context the failure to articulate a hegemonic nationalist ideology to accompany the production of large-scale infrastructure results in a fragmentation of state space in some ways, even as state space is homogenized and integrated in other ways. Every year, reservoir sedimentation causes an estimated 1% reduction in the total capacity of reservoirs. When sediment deposits approach the dam, further issues related to sediment passing through the turbines, blocking of the outlets and dam safety arise. One of the possible ways to tackle these problems is by management of the sediment in the reservoir itself through a selected operation strategy. A long-term reservoir sedimentation model, Ressass, is used to explore the impact of reservoir operation on sediment deposition. This paper explores the influence of different water level management strategies that result from water supply and hydropower demands. The results show that preserving the live storage may increase the rate of approach of sediment deposits towards the dam. The findings may support reservoir managers when facing these sometimes opposite objectives. To illustrate the analysis, different theoretical strategies are applied to a case study of Tarbela, the largest dam and reservoir on the River Indus in Pakistan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Importance of reservoirs for supplying fresh water has increased significantly at present. In order to move a step forward towards making the present day un-sustainable reservoirs into sustainable infrastructure, this article reviews the sediment erosion and reservoir sedimentation estimates at global scale and applies the Reservoir Conservation Tool (RESCON) for one of the large reservoirs: Tarbela Dam in Pakistan. The article points out the wide variations of the estimates both for soil erosion and reservoir sedimentation and shows how the various reservoir level and duration of flushing will effect in achieving the sediment balance ratio in the Tarbela reservoir. It is found that the flushing can be done efficiently with Sediment Balance Ratio (SBR) greater than 1. This study concerns Tarbela dam reservoir which is a major resource of Pakistan in terms of electricity generation and irrigation supplies. Rapid filling of reservoir due to sediment transported and deposited by Indus River is described and analysed in this article. Causes of sediment deposition and their impact on dam's function and life are studied. The main characteristic parameters of the site are presented. The morphological evolution of the reservoir bed induced by dam construction, between the year 1974 when the River bed was in its original state before dam construction, and the situation of the river bed after the deposition of the sediment in the year 2006, is examined. A numerical model developed in this study (Khawaja and Sanchez in Tarbela dam: a numerical model for sediment management in the reservoir; coastal and maritime mediterranean conference, 1st edn, Hammamet, pp 111-114, ) allows obtaining the above-stated provisional evolution of the reservoir over the coming years. The article presents the result of the study on the Reservoir Optimization-Simulation with Sediment Evacuation (ROSSE) model applied in the Tarbela Reservoir in Pakistan to optimize and simulate its operation with sediment evacuation. It mentions that the ROSSE model, which uses the genetic algorithm based optimization capabilities and embeds the sediment evacuation model into the simulation model, is applied to optimize the rule curves of the reservoir. In this relation, the study concludes that it is possible to enhance the reservoir's sustainability and maximize its net income benefits by modifying the operating policy and rule curves.

black shale sample collected from the Chimiari site (Tarbela) was analyzed for elemental contents. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was employed to determine major and trace elements in the digests. Precise analysis was accomplished for the black shales, which was better than 2.0%. Result shows that the shales are very rich in Ca (25439 μg·g), Fe (13933 μg·g), Ti (6932 μg·g), Al (5993 μg·g) and K (2730 μg·g). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pivot point of delta in Tarbela dam has reached at about 10.6 km from the dam face which may result in blocking of tunnels. Tarbela delta was modeled from 1979 to 2060 using hec-6 model. Initially, the model was calibrated for year 1999 and validated for years 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2006 by involving the data of sediment concentration, reservoir cross sections (73 range lines), elevation-area capacity curves, and inflows and outflows from the reservoir. Then, the model was used to generate future scenarios, i.e., run-1, run-2, and run-3 with pool levels; 428, 442, and 457 m, respectively, till 2060. Results of run-1 and run-2 showed advancement to choke the tunnels by 2010 and 2030, respectively. Finally, in run-3, the advancement was further delayed showing that tunnels 1 and 2 will be choked by year 2050 and pivot point will reach at 6.4 km from the dam face. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
