At partial filling of a flat band, strong electronic interactions may favor gapped states harboring emergent topology with quantized Hall conductivity. Emergent topological states have been found in partially filled Landau levels and Hofstadter bands; in both cases, a large magnetic field is required to engineer the underlying flat band. The recent observation of quantum anomalous Hall effects (QAH) in narrow band moir\'e systems has led to the theoretical prediction that such phases may be realized even at zero magnetic field. Here we report the experimental observation of insulators with Chern number $C=1$ in the zero magnetic field limit at $\nu=3/2$ and $7/2$ filling of the moir\'e superlattice unit cell in twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG). Our observation of Chern insulators at half-integer values of $\nu$ suggests spontaneous doubling of the superlattice unit cell, in addition to spin- and valley-ferromagnetism. This is confirmed by Hartree-Fock calculations, which find a topological charge density wave ground state at half filling of the underlying $C=2$ band, in which the Berry curvature is evenly partitioned between occupied and unoccupied states. We find the translation symmetry breaking order parameter is evenly distributed across the entire folded superlattice Brillouin zone, suggesting that the system is in the flat band, strongly correlated limit. Our findings show that the interplay of quantum geometry and Coulomb interactions in moir\'e bands allows for topological phases at fractional superlattice filling that spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry, a prerequisite in pursuit of zero magnetic field phases harboring fractional statistics as elementary excitations or bound to lattice dislocations., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

The development of a facile growth method of gold nanocrystals with a controlled shape is of crucial importance to expand the potential applications of gold nanoarchitectures which have various unique and useful physicochemical properties. Here, we report the site-preferential formation of gold nanostructures with various shapes on Si substrates. When a Si wafer covered with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB, an organic salt) is immersed in Au(OH)4− aqueous solution and immediately photoirradiated, dendritic gold nanostructures grow on the surface of the Si wafer. Interestingly, the gold nanodendrites preferentially grow on scratched portions drawn by using a pen-type diamond glass cutter on the Si wafer. The shape of gold nanocrystals depends on the structure of both quaternary alkylammonium cations and halide anions, which are components of the organic salt film, and gold nanostructures with various shapes are successfully obtained at the scratched portions. It is revealed that concerted mechanisms of photoreduction of Au3+ ions and a new type of galvanic displacement reaction between Si and Au(OH)4− cause the site-preferential growth of gold nanoarchitectures.

Aims: Ethidium bromide monoazide (EMA) has been determined to cause delay in DNA amplification from dead bacteria at real-time PCR. However, there is concern that the increasing EMA concentration to suppress amplification from high number of dead bacteria also affects live bacteria. The aim is to disclose a novel application of EMA for food hygienic test. Methods and Results: We performed a low-dose double EMA treatment. Live or heat-dead Enterobacter sakazakii (reclassified as Cronobacter spp.) in 10% powdered infant formula (PIF) solution was subjected to a treatment with 20 μg ml−1 of EMA followed by a treatment with 10 μg ml−1 of EMA without washing, and direct real-time PCR. We observed that DNA amplification from 107 cells ml−1 of dead Ent. sakazakii was completely suppressed within 50 cycles of PCR, whereas 102–103 cells ml−1 of viable cells could be detected. When a 3-h enrichment step in liquid medium was included after the first EMA treatment, live Ent. sakazakii could be detected at initial levels of 100–102 cells ml−1. We compared the low-dose double-treated EMA-PCR with the culture method using 80 samples of PIF, and completely correlative results were obtained for both methods. Conclusions: We concluded that the newly developed low-dose double-treated EMA-PCR is a very effective tool for live Ent. sakazakii detection in PIF. Significance and Impact of the Study: We focused on the specific nature of photoreactive compound that residual EMA is cancelled by irradiation. We were successful in treating bacteria with EMA in gradient concentration to increase live and dead distinction ability.

The growth of S. aureus and the production of staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) in skim milk concentrates stored at inappropriate temperatures in a recovery milk tank (tank for excess concentrated skim milk) used in the manufacture of skimmed milk powder were investigated. Also, it was estimated if a possible outbreak of food poisoning would occur if the contaminated skimmed milk powder was used in the manufacture of processed milk. Skim milk concentrates with milk solid content of 15, 25, and 35% were inoculated with S. aureus at 1-2 log CFU/ml and incubated at 15, 25, or 35 degrees C for 0 to 24 h with or without shaking. Bacterial growth and the level of SEA production were measured. At 35 degrees C with shaking, there was a significant difference (p0.05) in one way layout analysis of variance, and it was demonstrated that the growth of S. aureus and SEA production could be milk solid content-dependent. Shaking accelerated the growth of S. aureus and SEA production at 35 degrees C. Generally, skim milk powder is produced by mixing a set percentage of skim milk concentrates (recovery milk) from the recovery milk tank into raw milk. If recovery milk contaminated with S. aureus at levels of 1-2 log CFU/ml is kept at 15 to 35 degrees C due to a power failure, it was estimated that processed milk consumption of 670-1200 ml, 420-1500 ml and 18-83 ml would trigger the onset of food poisoning symptoms when skim milk concentrates (recovery milk) are stored at 25 degrees C for 24 h, 35 degrees C for 10 h, and 35 degrees C for 24 h, respectively, during the production of the skim milk powder. Based on these consumption levels, it was concluded that, if recovery milk cannot be refrigerated and is stored at room temperature (25 to 35 degrees C), it must be used within 8 h and preferably within 6 h.

Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin that may be contained at low concentrations in milk and dairy products can cause food poisoning. To detect this enterotoxin at low concentrations, samples should be concentrated. We evaluated the performance of centrifugal ultrafiltration method (UF) in comparison with trichloroacetic acid precipitation method (TCA) for the concentration of S. aureus enterotoxin in milk and dairy products. S. aureus enterotoxin A (SEA) were added at various concentrations to ultra high-temperature heating process (UHT) milk, UHT concentrated skim milk, UHT skim milk powder, low heat-treated (LH) skim milk powder, and raw milk. SEA was concentrated by TCA and UF once a day on a total of 3 days by different researchers to prepare test solutions. The fluorescence value (TV) of test solutions was determined using an immunofluorescence autoanalyzer (miniVIDAS), and the linearity and slope of the regression line, relative standard deviation (RSD(RW)) at each added concentration, detection limit (DL), quantification limit (QL), and the recovery rate by each concentration method were obtained according to the guidelines of the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH). The slope of the regression line obtained by UF was steeper than that by TCA for all dairy samples excluding LH (74 degrees C, 20 s) skim milk powder. RSDRW, DL, and QL obtained by UF were comparable to or more excellent than those obtained by TCA. The procedure of UF was simpler than that of TCA. The recovery rate and rapidity were similar between the two methods. The DL and QL of enterotoxins other than SEA in dairy products by UF or TCA were estimated based on the DL and QL of SEA. In this estimation, consideration was given to reactions between each enterotoxin and its antibody, and also to the immunoactivity maintenance rate of each enterotoxin after addition of trichloroacetic acid in TCA. The estimated values were similar to those obtained by experiments using enterotoxin C1 (SEC1). UF using a centrifugal ultrafiltration membrane can be more readily performed and similar to or more reliable than TCA. UF combined with a miniVIDAS can be used for quantitative routine analysis.

Both substance P and neurokinin A are known as neurotransmitters of the submandibular ganglion cell. In this study, the effects of neurokinin (NK) receptor-subtype agonists on hamster submandibular ganglion cells were investigated using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. Membrane currents evoked by a ramp pulse from +50 to −100 mV (−150 mV/1000 msec) were compared in both the absence and presence of NK receptor agonist. The NK-1 receptor agonist [Sar 9 , Met (O 2 ) 11 ]-substance P, the NK-2 receptor agonist [Ala 5 , β-Ala 8 ]-α-neurokinin fragment 4–10, and the NK-3 receptor agonist senktide were used. The three agonists dose-dependently increased the amplitude of the inward current with a reversal potential near 0 mV. Their rank order was NK-1=NK-3>NK-2. Even when the external solution was replaced with Cs + or N -methyl- d -glucamine + instead of Na + , the NK receptor agonists also increased the amplitude of the inward current. Thus, NK-1 and NK-3 receptors are apparently coupled with non-selective cation channels in submandibular ganglion cells.

The muscle strength of knees with an injured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is generally assessed by the peak of the isokinetic muscle contraction. However, assessment of the characteristics of muscle contraction, such as the contraction velocity and contraction endurance, has been largely ignored due to a lack of data. In this study, we have performed frequency analysis of the surface electromyograms during sustained isometric contraction of the quadriceps femoris muscle in 22 knees with ACL deficiency to evaluate the characteristics of muscle contraction. Concerning the time-related changes in the mean power frequency (MPF), the decrease with time was smaller than normal (reflecting a deficiency in the number of fast-twitch fibers) in the rectus femoris and vastus medialis muscles of the injured limb in many subjects. However, a slightly different pattern was observed in the vastus lateralis muscle, which showed little difference between the injured and intact limbs. Therefore the vastus lateralis muscle was considered to be less affected by an ACL deficiency than the other two muscles. The time-related changes in the MPF in the ACL deficient limb were clearly different from those in the intact limb and a deficiency in the fast-twitch fibers was suggested. Therefore a frequency analysis of the surface electromyograms was considered to allow detection of qualitative changes, such as of muscle fiber deficiency, as well as detection of changes in the simple muscle strength.

To evaluate whether meniscal repair can protect the cartilage deterioration, changes in articular cartilage of the involved compartment were evaluated by reviewing the videotapes recorded at the time of operations (33 meniscal repairs, 18 meniscectomies) and second-look arthroscopies. Meniscal repairs gave marginally better results than meniscectomies but the articular cartilage was often deteriorated in cases that had the incompletely healed meniscus or the unhealed meniscus. Although completely healed menisci restore the meniscal function and protect the articular damage, unsuccessful meniscal healings sometimes provoke degeneration of the articular cartilage.

Pasteurized milk is a complex food and contains numerous PCR inhibitors and can often contain high levels of dead Enterobacteriaceae cells, depending on the condition of food sanitation. Usually, propidium monoazide (PMA) or ethidium monoazide PCR techniques decrease the number of dead bacteria by up to 3.5 log to the associated dead bacteria with no treatment. However, this difference could be insufficient to completely inhibit DNA amplification in the PCR from 10 6 cells of dead Enterobacteriaceae bacteria/mL, potentially contaminated in pasteurized milk. Actually, such potentially high levels of dead Enterobacteriaceae cells in milk has prevented milk researchers from applying PMA- or ethidium monoazide PCR to the assay of viable Enterobacteriaceae cells in milk. We, therefore, developed a rapid PMA real-time PCR whose minimum levels of detection were 1.5 log cfu/PCR for Cronobacter muytjensii and Escherichia coli , and 2.5 log cfu/PCR for Salmonella enteritidis without DNA purification in milk matrices. The PMA real-time PCR allowed us to specifically detect viable Enterobacteriaceae cells (5–10 cfu/mL) in pasteurized milk (20mL) within 7.5h of total testing time, following the hygienic guidelines for pasteurized milk in the United States and European Union. The long DNA amplification (mainly 2,451 bp) of the 16S-23S rRNA gene was completely suppressed in highly contaminated dead Enterobacteriaceae cells (7.5 log cfu of Cronobacter muytjensii ) in 20mL of pasteurized milk by 23-μ M PMA treatment. Although the contamination of the PCR reaction with 5% milk usually causes great inhibition, our method led to the successful elongation of PCR from viable Enterobacteriaceae cells still in the pasteurized milk matrices finally corresponding to 2 to 4mL of milk PCR inhibitors without a DNA purification step. To comply with current customer demands for chilled pasteurized milk at the most excellent possible quality, our new technique could enable laboratory persons in a factory to conduct rapid milk coliform testing before shipping from a factory.

Cytologic studies in patients with prostatic infection, primarily those with chronic prostatitis, were conducted on samples obtained by the fine needle aspiration method. Infiltration of inflammatory cells such as polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages was observed to a greater extent in patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis as compared to those with chronic nonbacterial prostatitis or prostatodynia. The pathogen was isolated in only one out of 28 patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis. We concluded that fine needle biopsy is useful for assessing patients with prostatic inflammation, but not for detecting microorganisms because of focal colonization of the organisms in the glands.

This study evaluated an automated immunoassay for bovine lactoferrin (LF) in dairy products based on latex beads coated with F(ab′)2 fragments. Methods: F(ab′)2 fragments were obtained by pepsin digestion of rabbit anti-bovine LF (IgG fraction) and polystyrene latex beads were coated with the F(ab′)2 fragments. We used the beads to develop a rapid and homogeneous light scatter immunoassay employing an autoanalyzer (the Automated Latex assay). The Automated Latex assay was easy to perform and could rapidly determine bovine lactoferrin in lactoferrin-supplemented products. It was sensitive enough for testing products and showed good precision.

We propose the noncontact liquid distinction by a capacitive measurement sensor with two-layer electrodes structure. Three kinds of liquids, distilled water, sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, are distinguished by the change rate of two data obtained with only one time simultaneous measurement of the propose sensor.

A description is given of an optical subscriber network architecture and customer premises configuration suitable for broadband services and a method of evolution from narrowband to broadband ISDN. Typical applications and requisites for broadband services are outlined. Fiber network topology and add-drop multiplexing networks are discussed. Customer topology, channel structure, and the D-channel access method are examined. >

A miniaturized X-band MMIC T/R module for conformal array antenna has been developed based on a newly designed cylindrical package concept aiming at easier assembly of the package and the array. The overall package measures 19 mm in diameter excluding the base flange and 15 mm in height and weighs 18 g. The module provides 2W output power in X band.

We described in a previous paper (Bull Tokyo dent Coll 33: 33-35, 1992) that the submandibular ganglion cells (SMG) of hamster responded to substance P (SP) with a depolarization, which could be divided into three subtypes according to the change in membrane input resistance (Rm) during depolarization: depolarizations accompanied by either an increase or a decrease in Rm, and without change in Rm. In this study, the generation mechanism of the SP-induced depolarization accompanied by a decrease in Rm was investigated using the current-clamp technique. The result showed that cation channels coupled with NK-1 receptors on SMG cells were involved in generation of the SP-depolarization, and that the main charge carrier was the sodium ion.

We performed esophageal endoscopy with concurrent chemo-radiotherapy for lung cancer in 19 patients. Endoscopical examination proved that seven patients (36.8%) had esophageal erosion or coating (grade 2), four patients (21.1%) had ulcer or bleeding (grade 3) confined to the radiation field, and only one patient (5.3%) had severe symptoms (WHO grade 3). There was a discrepancy between patients' symptoms and endoscopical findings. Endoscopically proven esophagitis, that is, erosion or coating (grade 2), and ulcer or bleeding (grade 3), was more frequent in the daily low-dose chemotherapy group (5/5) than in the full dose chemotherapy group (5/14) (p0.05). One patient with grade 3 endoscopial damage showed less recovery in spite of three months medication. In concurrent radiochemotherapy in which the radiation field includes the esophagus, careful attention should be given to radiation esophagitis, which may be underestimated when assessed on the basis of subjective symptoms alone. Therefore, endoscopy is recommended even if patients have few complaints, and once the esophageal ulcer is proven (grade 3), it should be closely followed up using endoscopy.

One hundred three patients with adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix treated with radiotherapy between 1975 and 1992 were evaluated. The results for 24 patients treated with radiotherapy alone were as follows: The overall 5-year survival rates for Stages I + II (N = 12) and III + IV (N = 12) were 52% and 16%, respectively, lower than those for squamous cell carcinoma (stage I: 89%, II: 54%, III: 44%, IV: 19%). The overall response rate was 79.1%, and the recurrence rate was 54.2% (local recurrence: 29.2%, distant metastasis: 33.3%). In Stage I + II patients with an intracavitary irradiation dose of 40 Gy (LDR) or more, there was no local recurrence. In stage III + IV patients, local recurrence was recognized in spite of the high dosage of intracavitary irradiation. The results for 79 patients treated with combined irradiation and operation were as follows: The overall 5-year survival rates for Stages I, II, III and IV were 76%, 60%, 57%, and 0%, respectively. The incidence of lymph node metastasis was 30.4%, and for Stages I, II, III and IV was 26.7%, 34.6%, 28.6%, and 100%, respectively. This showed that adenocarcinoma had a higher incidence of lymph node metastasis after the early stage. The recurrence rate for patients with lymph node metastasis was 75.0%, significantly higher than 25.4% for patients without lymph node metastasis (p0.001). To improve prognosis, 40 Gy or more of intracavitary irradiation dose (LDR) and systemic chemotherapy to prevent distant metastasis are recommended for stage I and II cases. For stage III and IV cases, it was thought to be difficult to control local disease with radiation alone. Additional treatment should be used for these cases, i.e. intraarterial infusion, chemotherapy, hyperthermia and so on.

One hundred sixty-three patients with previously untreated stage I/II non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were analyzed as to their in-field and marginal relapse of the irradiated field following treatment with more than 30 Gy of radiotherapy between 1981 and 1995 at Hyogo Medical Center for Adults. Local regrowth in case of partial response was counted as in-field relapse. Complete response was obtained in 94.5% of the cases at the termination of radiotherapy and in 98.8% finally. The ten-year cumulative in-field relapse and marginal relapse rates were 5% and 8.7%, respectively. The cumulative in-field relapse rate (CIFRR) in cases of bulky disease (more than 5 cm in largest diameter of the tumor) was significantly higher than in those of non-bulky disease (26.1% in 8 years vs 2.4% in 10 years, P0.01). The radiation dosage delivered (40 Gy =and 50 Gyvs 50 Gy=) a great much difference in cases of bulky disease (23.8% for 8-year CIFRR vs 0% for 1-year CIFRR, respectively), but less difference with non-bulky disease (2.6% vs 2.2%). High LDH and suboptimal dose chemotherapy (three courses and less chemotherapy containing ADM or its derivatives, chemotherapy without ADM or no chemotherapy) had a negative impact on marginal control in aggressive lymphoma. Extended field setting in aggressive lymphoma was not proven to be beneficial in comparison with involved field setting as to marginal field relapse. Thus, it is concluded that (1) higher doses should be given to bulky disease, (2) careful field coverage with enough margin is recommended for aggressive lymphoma with high LDH or treated without optimal dose chemotherapy, and (3) extended field setting is not necessary.

To evaluate the role of radiation therapy for adrenal metastases.Fourteen patients, 13 with primary lung carcinoma and one with primary unknown carcinoma, received radiation therapy for adrenal metastases from 1984 to 1995 at the Hyogo Medical Center for Adults. Total dose ranged from 16 Gy to 60 Gy, and fractional dose from 1.6 Gy/ Fr to 3 Gy/Fr.Partial response of the local tumor was recognized in 2 of 7 patients by CT imaging. Pain relief was obtained in 7 of 8 patients. Median survival was 3 months, and 6-month survival was 28.6% in all patients. Among patients in the symptomatic group, who had complaints of pain due to adrenal mass, survival was even worse (12.5% at 6 months). There were no severe complications, but 4 patients (29%) had gastrointestinal symptoms.Radiation therapy is useful for the purpose of pain relief in adrenal metastases.

From January 1984 to December 1993, 184 patients with previously untreated T1 and T2 (UICC 1987) laryngeal glottic cancer underwent radiotherapy at Hyogo Medical Center for Adults. The prognostic variables analyzed included sex, age, smoking index, T stage, tumor size, tumor type, gross anterior commissure involvement (gross ACI), histological differentiation, administered dose, TDF, overall treatment time, chemotherapy, initial response, and the dose required to achieve CR. Both univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. The T stage, tumor size, and gross ACI were significant variables in univariate analysis, while the tumor type and gross ACI were significant on multivariate analysis. The 5-year recurrence-free survival of patients with gross ACI was significantly worse than that of those without ACI (57.6% vs. 89.9%). Among gross ACI patients, the recurrence-free survival of those treated with 70-72 Gy was superior to that of those receiving 60-62 Gy, suggesting that at least 70 Gy was necessary to control such diseases.

Possibility of PHB production by activated sludge using at wastewater treatment facility was investigated. The sludge cultured by anaerobic aerobic method could accumulate PHB 25~30% (w/w, dry sludge base) under non-aeration condition with no limitation of nitrogen.

Thirty-four patients with carcinoma of the vagina were treated by radiotherapy at the Hyogo Medical Center for Adults between April 1965 and May 1990. All patients were treated with a combination of external and intracavitary or intestinal irradiation. Twenty-three patients had squamous cell carcinoma, five had adenocarcinoma and two had malignant melanoma. The five-year survival of patients with squamous cell carcinoma was 70% in Stage I (10 patients), 40% in Stage II (seven patients), 50% in Stage III (three patients) and 0% in Stage IV (three patients). Local control was achieved in 72.7% of the patients with squamous cell carcinoma and 60% of those with adenocarcinoma. However, neither of the malignant melanomas was controlled. Five patients had severe complications that required surgical treatment: severe proctitis and small-bowel perforation, ileus, rectal stenosis, vesicovaginal fistula and small-bowel perforation. Local and pelvic failure was noted in three patients. Patients with previous hysterectomy were more likely to develop serious treatment-related complications.

Gd-enhanced MR images of two patients with clinically and histopathologically diagnosed chronic progressive radiation myelitis (CPRM) were observed chronologically. One of them had had nasopharyngeal cancer and received radiotherapy at a dose of 100 Gy to the C1-2 level of the spinal cord. She developed CPRM 25 months after the termination of radiotherapy. The other had had malignant lymphoma originating from the tonsil and received chemoradiotherapy. The dose delivered to her cervical spinal cord was 40 Gy, and she developed CPRM 30 months later. Gd-enhanced MRI in the early phase revealed a small crescent-shaped nidus with or without a very small central nonenhanced area in both cases. Enhancement was not great. At that time, patients noticed only the inability to perceive pain and temperature or paresthsia in the opposite side. In a few months, MRI revealed a much more strongly enhanced and larger nidus with enlargement of a central nonenhanced area accompanied by long segmental cord enlargement. The patients' neurological symptoms had also progressed, with hemiparesis developing, for example.

Fifteen patients who had primary vulvar cancer treated with radiotherapy as an initial treatment at Hyogo Medical Center for Adults and Hyogo Cancer Center from January 1971 to December 1990 are presented. Two patients were stage 0, one stage I, three stage II and nine stage III. Nine patients received electron irradiation with or without interstitial irradiation and intracavitary vaginal irradiation. Five patients received megavoltage X-ray irradiation using AP/PA parallel opposed fields including the pelvic nodes and perineum followed by boost irradiation of electrons, interstitial irradiation and intracavitary vaginal irradiation. The total dose delivered to the primary tumor ranged from 50 to 100 Gy (73 Gy on average). The actuarial 5-year survival rate of the patients was 43.6%. Complete regression (CR) was achieved in 60% of the patients. However, CR was not achieved in any of five patients with palpable inguinal nodes. In contrast, all the patients who had tumors of less than 2 cm in diameter achieved CR. Five of nine CR cases relapsed. First sites of failure were vagina, groin and vulvar region. Recurrence occurred more than four years after treatment in three cases. Necrosis occurred in five of nine CR cases.

Despite the effectiveness of the intracavitary irradiation as the boost therapy for the esophageal cancer, the side effect of the normal part of the esophagus has not been studied enough. The purpose of this study is to investigate the histopathological responses of the rabbit esophagus to the high-dose-rate intracavitary irradiation. Esophageal ulcer was observed in the specimen received a dose of 15 Gy during 7 to 28 days after irradiation. Before the mucosal changes were observed, edema and cell infiltration were found in lamina propria. Chronic injury such as necrosis and degeneration of epithelium, and degeneration of the wall of blood vessels was seen at 6 months. No marked changes were found in the specimen received doses of 5 and 10 Gy. The influences of administration of mucosal protection agent and cancer chemotherapeutic drug were also studied. Administration of mucosal protection agent protected the occurrence of severe ulcer and accelerated the recovery from mucosal damage. Administration of cancer chemotherapeutic agent enhanced the radiation injury by the intracavitary irradiation of the esophagus. In conclusion, it was strongly suggested that a single dose of the high-dose-rate intracavitary irradiation should be reduced less than 10 Gy to prevent the esophagus from severe injury.

Stereotactic radiosurgery with linear accelerator requires accurate localization of target and accurate spatial delivery of radiation. In phantom study, geometric accuracy of radiosurgery was assessed in combination of CT simulation system (CTSS), which had been developed in our institute, and linear accelerator with supplemental collimator. After determination of target and its isocenter with CTSS, phantom was placed on treatment table so that isocenter meet at the intersection of mechanical axes (gantry, turn table). Displacement of the isocenter from the center of the radiation field was 1 mm in average. It was concluded that this combination could be applied to radiosurgery.

Forty-six lung cancer patients received radiotherapy from 1982 to 1987 were reviewed to analyze the incidence of radiation pneumonitis and the factors which were related to it. The incidence of which evaluated with plain chest X-ray was 54% at 1 month, 78% at 3 months and 89% at 6 months after radiotherapy. The relationship between severity of pneumonitis and several parameters were studied. As a result, six parameters consisting of pre-radiotherapy granulocyte counts, tumor location, T-factor, radiation dose, radiation field size and the combination timing of chemotherapy were found to be contributing factors.

This paper describes a complete hardware implementation of an experimental two-wire digital subscriber loop transmission system using balanced pairs of wires. It is based on the time division burst mode transmission scheme (ping-pong), and provides two information channels, 64 kbits/s and 8 kbits/s, and a signaling channel both ways. The burst cycle is 2 ms and line transmission rate is 192 kbits/s. The salient feature of the system is that it is equipped with a powerful bridged tap equalizer which has the capability to compensate a large fraction of existing two-wire subscriber loops in Japan. It is realized by a fifth-order recursive filter using analog tapped delay lines, and a modified zero forcing algorithm is adopted for the adaptation of the tap coefficients. The experimental results showed that the combination of the \sqrt{f} AGC and the bridged tap equalizer enables the digital transmission up to 4 km on the 0.4 mm φ subscriber line with three bridged taps each of 400 m length.

The correspondence of the scattered field by two elliptical reflectors to the diffracted field by two circular apertures is investigated. The experimental verification of this aperture field method is performed. Also, as has been clarified, the idea of shadow in a geometrical-optics sense is still useful in microwave region.

A case of asymptomatic syringomyelia associated with tentorial meningioma is reported. A 53-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with the complaints of headache, decrease of bilateral visual acuity and gait disturbance. Neurological examination revealed no abnormality except for bilateral papilledema and left cerebellar sign. Motor and sensory systems were also intact. CT and MRI scans showed a left tentorial mass lesion, cervical syringomyelia and left tonsillar herniation. A relationship between the fourth ventricle and syringomyelia was not clearly identified. The tumor was totally removed and a histological diagnosis of fibroblastic meningioma was made. Postoperative radiological examination showed a diminishing of syringomyelia with the improved tonsillar herniation. Association of syringomyelia with brain tumor was reviewed, and its pathogenesis was discussed.

The microvascular reaction to focal cryogenic injury over the cerebral cortex in dogs and cats, examined by epicerebral fluorescein angiography and by measuring diameter changes in the epicerebral vessels, proceeds from an early phase of microcirculatory disturbance in the cortical capillaries and venules to a late phase of abnormal arterial circulation with arrest of microcirculation in the small cortical arteries below 100 μ in diameter, in capillaries, and in cortical veins. The changes of regional cerebral blood flow measured by beta-emitting krypton-85 correspond with fluorescein angiographic findings. On the other hand, the degree of change in the regional cerebral blood flow measured by gamma-emitting xenon-133 in the lesion does not correspond accurately with other findings due to error from “see-through” factors. The early microcirculatory disturbance and extensive aggregation of platelets in the small cerebral vessels, associated with preservation of the abnormal arterial circulation, may be an important factor in the pathogenesis of late wide-spreading brain edema after cryogenic injury to the cortex.
