Background: Lymphocyte predominant breast cancer subgroup, defined as ≥ 50% stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (sTILs), is associated with high pathological complete response (pCR) rate after neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) and favorable outcome. In a cohort of triple negative (TNBC) and HER2+ breast cancer (BC) patients treated with NAT, we aimed to assess the predictive and prognostic value of pre- and post-NAT sTILs and the information provided by the change in sTILs during NAT. Materials and methods: Two-hundred and nine consecutive patients (n=80 TNBC; and n=129 HER2+) who received NAT between 2001 and 2009 in our institution were evaluated. Pre-NAT sTILs were assessed on biopsy sample (baseline) and post-NAT sTILs on surgical specimens just for non-pCR patients. sTILs level was categorized as low 0-9%, intermediate 10-49%, and high ≥50%. The change in sTILs during NAT was calculated as the absolute difference between pre- and post-NAT sTILs. We evaluated the association of pre-NAT sTILs and pCR, and the association between pre- and post-NAT sTILs, and their change with relapse-free survival (RFS). Results: Overall pCR rate was 37.8% (31.3% for TNBC, 41.2% for ER+/HER2+BC, 42.3% for ER-/HER2+BC). In each subtype, pre-NAT low sTILs group was significantly associated with lower pCR rate. During the median follow-up period of 98 months, 44 recurrences (21.1%) were observed. For TNBC, low pre-NAT sTILs group was associated with higher recurrence risk compared with int/high sTILs (HR=4.675 [2.013-10.859], p Conclusion: In TN and HER2+ BCs, tumors with low pre-NAT sTILs have a low likelihood to achieve a pCR (predictive marker). In TNBC, low pre-NAT sTILs were associated with higher recurrence risk. In non-pCR TNBC patients, both low pre- and post-NAT sTILs were associated with shorter RFS. These results suggest that sTILs information should be taken into account when additional post-surgery treatments are considered in non-pCR patients. The CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores, that is, ischemic stroke risk indices for patients having atrial fibrillation (AF), may also be useful as bleeding risk indices. Japanese patients with AF, who routinely took oral antithrombotic agents were enrolled from a prospective, multicenter study. The CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores were assessed based on information at entry. Scores of 0, 1 and ⩾2 were defined as the low, intermediate and high ischemic risk categories, respectively, for each index. Of 1221 patients, 873 took warfarin, 114 took antiplatelet agents and 234 took both. The annual incidence of ischemic stroke was 0.76% in the low-risk category, 1.46% in the intermediate-risk category and 2.90% in the high-risk category by CHADS2 scores, and 1.44, 0.42 and 2.50%, respectively, by CHA2DS2-VASc scores. The annual incidence of major bleeding in each category was 1.52, 2.19 and 2.25% by CHADS2, and 1.44, 1.69 and 2.24% by CHA2DS2-VASc. After multivariate adjustment, the CHADS2 was associated with ischemia (odds ratio 1.76, 95% confidence interval 1.03-3.38 per 1-category increase) and the CHA2DS2-VASc tended to be associated with ischemia (2.18, 0.89-8.43). On the other hand, associations of the indices with bleeding were weak. In conclusion, bleeding risk increased gradually as the CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores increased in Japanese antithrombotic users, although the statistical impact was rather weak compared with their predictive power for ischemic stroke.

In this paper, we describe an approach to the analysis and design of power grid dynamic performance based on hybrid systems theory. Power grid is a large-scale cyber-physical system for transmission of electrical energy. The joint dynamics of physical processes and cyber elements in power grids are typical of a mixture of continuous and discrete behaviors, that is, hybrid dynamics. We address problems on stability that are basic concerns in the performance of current and future power grids with the hybrid dynamics. Measures for stability of power grids are interpreted as safety specifications in hybrid system models and are translated into restrictions on the systems' reachable sets of states. Algorithmic reachability analysis of hybrid systems enables analysis of safe initial states and hence quantitative estimation of stability regions. Also it contributes to synthesis of safe initial states as well as switching conditions in order to satisfy safety specifications in a power grid. We demonstrate the approach for two problems on transient stability of the single machine/infinite bus (SMIB) system and on fault release control of a multimachine power grid.

We describe a method that can be used to produce concrete-reinforcing PET fiber from used PET bottles. Using this method, the concrete and PET fibers are easily mixed at a fiber contents as high as 3%. The primary characteristic of the PET fiber is that it is easy to handle. The issue of concern in the development of PET fiber is its alkali resistance; however, we encountered no problems when using the fiber in normal concrete. The wetting tension of PET was found to be lower than that of PVA but higher than that of PP. No toxic gas was generated during a combustion test of the PET fiber. We describe two example applications: a gateway support at Hishikari Mine, Japan, and the pavement of bush roads.

There is a glaring need for omitting intermediate heat treatments in the manufacturing processes of carburized parts and increasing the carburizing temperature aimed at cost reduction. It is necessary to develop techniques to inhibit grain-coarsening since some austenite grains tend to grow abnormally during carburizing and coarse grains have negative effects on the properties of parts. Therefore, we developed new techniques to inhibit grain-coarsening by refining precipitates’ size and increasing their volume fraction based on the abnormal grain growth theory by Gladman. In this study, AlN and Nb(CN) were chosen as the precipitate particles for the pinning of austenite grain growth. And we investigated grain-coarsening behavior in several manufacturing processes of parts. As a result, we developed anti-coarsening steels for various manufacturing processes of carburized parts.

This paper describes a fully integrated single-chip CMOS mixed-signal system on a chip (SoC) for DVD player applications. It integrates one digital signal processor (DSP), two 32-bit CPUs, three dedicated processing units, a partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) read channel with an analog front end (AFE), and many other subsystems on the same die. The AFE includes a fifth-order G/sub m/-C filter and attains over 66 dB C/N overall. PR(3,4,4,3) structure is employed in the PRML read channel. Owing to the PRML signal processing and the mixed-signal system level optimization in the PRML read channel, less than 10/sup -6/ of bit-error rate (BER) is obtained for the focus offset margins over /spl plusmn/0.5 /spl mu/m. This SoC is fabricated in 0.13-/spl mu/m one-poly six-Cu CMOS technology. It contains 24 million transistors in a 63.87 mm/sup 2/ die and consumes 1.5 W at 40 MSample/s data rate, which corresponds to DVD 1.5 times playback operation mode.

Objective: To examine the role of tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) positive mononuclear and multinucleated cells in the destruction of articular cartilage in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: The presence of TRAP positive cells in the synovial tissue of patients with RA was examined by enzyme histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. Expression of mRNAs for matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) was assessed by the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and northern blot analysis. Production of MMPs by mononuclear and multinucleated TRAP positive cells was examined by immunocytochemistry, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) of conditioned medium, and immunohistochemistry of human RA synovial tissue. In addition, a cartilage degradation assay was performed by incubation of 35 S prelabelled cartilage discs with TRAP positive cells. Results: TRAP positive mononuclear cells and multinucleated cells were found in proliferating synovial tissue adjacent to the bone-cartilage interface in patients with RA. Expression of MMP-2 (gelatinase A), MMP-9 (gelatinase B), MMP-12 (macrophage metalloelastase), and MMP-14 (MT1-MMP) mRNA was detected in TRAP positive mononuclear and multinucleated cells by both RT-PCR and northern blot analysis. Immunocytochemistry for these MMPs showed that MMP-2 and MMP-9 were produced by both TRAP positive mononuclear and multinucleated cells, whereas MMP-12 and MMP-14 were produced by TRAP positive multinucleated cells. MMP-2 and MMP-9 were detected in the conditioned medium of TRAP positive mononuclear cells. TRAP positive mononuclear cells also induced the release of 35 S from prelabelled cartilage discs. Conclusion: This study suggests that TRAP positive mononuclear and multinucleated cells located in the synovium at the cartilage-synovial interface produce MMP-2 and MMP-9, and may have an important role in articular cartilage destruction in patients with RA.

Objective To investigate the expression of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) at sites of joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to correlate it with the production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Methods Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was performed to study the existence of EMMPRIN in synovial tissue derived from RA and osteoarthritis (OA) patients. In situ hybridization with a human complementary DNA specific for EMMPRIN and immunohistochemistry were performed to characterize the EMMPRIN-expressing cells at sites of joint destruction, including bone. Northern blot analysis was performed to detect the level of expression of EMMPRIN messenger RNA (mRNA) in synovial tissue. The production of MMP-1 and MMP-3 by synovial tissue from RA patients was examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Expression of EMMPRIN mRNA was detected in synovium from 9 of 11 patients with RA and 1 of 5 patients with OA. The presence of mRNA encoding EMMPRIN was recognized in the invasive synovium at sites of joint destruction in RA but not OA. Fibroblast-like synovial cells and granulocytes were demonstrated to express EMMPRIN mRNA. MMP-1 and MMP-3 production by synovial tissue was correlated with levels of expression of EMMPRIN mRNA, as detected by Northern blotting. Conclusion The expression of EMMPRIN stimulates the production of MMP-1 and MMP-3 in the synovial tissue of affected joints in RA. The results of this study suggest that EMMPRIN may be one of the important factors in progressive joint destruction in RA.

Many computer navigation systems have recently been developed for brain surgery, and the use of such systems in orthopedic surgery is increasing. Intraoperative registration of preoperative images is one of the most important steps in controlling the overall accuracy of computer navigation systems. Various parameters, such as CT-scan slice thickness, reconstruction pitch, intraoperative data sampling area, and data sampling volume, may affect the accuracy of registration. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the aforementioned parameters on the accuracy of registration for hip surgery performed through a posterolateral approach, and to find a clinically suitable trade-off between accuracy and surgical invasiveness.One cadaveric pelvis and one cadaveric femur were used for this study. Four alumina ceramic balls with a diameter of 28 mm and within 1 micrometer of sphericity were attached to the pelvis, and three similar balls attached to the femur, to determine relative position. CT-scan images of the pelvis and femur were obtained with a helical scanner. Three sets of slice thickness and slice pitch were chosen for data acquisition, and two additional sets of reconstructed data were made. Bone contours were extracted by cutting out the surrounding substrate at a given CT number threshold, and surface models of the bone were made from the resultant data. The positions of the pelvis and femur were tracked by LED markers attached to the bone using an optical three-dimensional position sensor (OPTOTRAK). Registration of the computer models to the real objects was performed by measuring the position of a certain number of surface points on each object with an OPTOTRAK pen-probe.Slice thickness and reconstruction pitch affected the accuracy of registration. As the sampling area was expanded from the periarticular area to the distant peripheral area, accuracy increased slightly. Accuracy did not increase when the whole area was used, but in fact decreased, especially in the femur. The positive effect of increasing the number of sampling points was saturated at 30 points when the surface of the periarticular area was sampled. The following trade-off between accuracy and invasiveness, in terms of various parameters of preoperative and intraoperative data, is proposed as clinically optimal: perform the CT scan with 3-mm slice thickness and 1-mm reconstruction pitch, and sample the periarticular area with 30 sampling points. With these parameters, the accuracy of registration was 1.2 mm and 0.9 degrees of bias with 0.7 mm and 0.3 degrees of RMS in the pelvis, and 1.4 mm and 0.6 degrees of bias with 1.3 mm and 0.3 degrees of RMS in the femur.

This paper describes a fully integrated single-chip CMOS mixed-signal system on a chip (SoC) for DVD RAM and ROM systems. It integrates a 32-b RISC CPU, formatter, servo digital signal processor (DSP), 16-Mb DRAM, error correction code (ECC), ATA interface, and partial-response-maximum-likelihood (PRML) read channel with 7-b interpolated parallel analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Increasing the bus bandwidth by using embedded DRAM, a hardware ECC engine, and four parallel digital finite-impulse response (FIR) filters contributes to the high playback speed of 16/spl times/. PR(3,4,4,3) architecture has been used in the read channel system for optical disc systems. The obtained wide tangential tilt margin of /spl plusmn/0.6/spl deg/ is due to the use of this PRML read channel technique. The interpolated parallel scheme has attained a high number of effective bits of 6.3 for 72-Mz input frequency at 432-MSample/s operation without any calibration technique, with low power consumption of 180 mW in a small core size of 1.05 mm/sup 2/. This SoC has been fabricated in 0.18-/spl mu/m 1PS3AL CMOS embedded DRAM technology. It contains 24 million transistors in a 144-mm/sup 2/ die and consumes 1.2 W at 432-MSample/s operation. This low power consumption allows the use of a low-cost plastic package. As a result, we can compose highly reliable DVD RAM and ROM systems with this SoC and some tiny components.

We have described a method of anatomical reconstruction of the lateral ligaments of the ankles with instability using allogeneic fascia lata dried with solvents and sterilised with gamma irradiation. Twenty ankles of 20 patients were assessed objectively and subjectively after a mean follow-up of 4.2 years (3.1 to 10). The result was excellent in 12 (60%), good in seven (35%) and fair in one (5%); none had a poor result. Stress radiography showed that the angle of talar tilt improved from 12.3 ± 4.2° (mean ±sd) to 5.9 ± 3.0° and that the anterior drawer distance decreased from 9.2 ± 3.9 mm to 4.4 ± 2.5 mm. Neither infection nor limitation of movement occurred after operation. Fascia lata allografts provide a good alternative to autogenous grafts such as the peroneus brevis tendon.

We studied the morphometry of 35 femora from 31 female patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and another 15 from 15 age- and sex-matched control patients using CT and three-dimensional computer reconstruction models. According to the classification of Crowe et al 15 of the dysplastic hips were graded as class I (less than 50% subluxation), ten as class II/III (50% to 100% subluxation) and ten as class IV (more than 100% subluxation). The femora with DDH had 10 to 14° more anteversion than the control group independent of the degree of subluxation of the hip. In even the most mildly dysplastic joints, the femur had a smaller and more anteverted canal than the normal control. With increased subluxation, additional abnormalities were observed in the size and position of the femoral head. Femora from dislocated joints had a short, anteverted neck associated with a smaller, narrower, and straighter canal than femora of classes I and II/III or the normal control group. We suggest that when total hip replacement is performed in the patient with DDH, the femoral prosthesis should be chosen on the basis of the severity of the subluxation and the degree of anteversion of each individual femur.

We developed a rat model of limb lengthening to study the basic mechanism of distraction osteogenesis, using a small monolateral external fixator. In 11-week-old male rats we performed a subperiosteal osteotomy in the midshaft of the femur with distraction at 0.25 mm every 12 hours from seven days after operation. Radiological and histological examinations showed a growth zone of constant thickness in the middle of the lengthened segment, with formation of new bone at its proximal and distal ends. Osteogenic cells were arranged longitudinally along the tension vector showing the origin and the fate of individual cells in a single section. Typical endochondral bone formation was prominent in the early stage of distraction, but intramembraneous bone formation became the predominant mechanism of ossification at later stages. We also showed a third mechanism of ossification, ‘transchondroid bone formation’. Chondroid bone, a tissue intermediate between bone and cartilage, was formed directly by chondrocyte-like cells, with transition from fibrous tissue to bone occurring gradually and consecutively without capillary invasion. In situ hybridisation using digoxigenin-11-UTP-labelled complementary RNAs showed that the chondroid bone cells temporarily expressed type-II collagen mRNA. They did not show the classical morphological characteristics of chondrocytes, but were assumed to be young chondrocytes undergoing further differentiation into bone-forming cells. We found at least three different modes of ossification during bone lengthening by distraction osteogenesis. We believe that this is the first report of such a rat model, and have shown the validity of in situ hybridisation techniques for the study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in distraction osteogenesis.

An improved Fast Decoupled Load Flow calculation method for distribution systems with high R/X ratio is proposed. This method is based on a coordinate transformation in Y-matrix for Jacobian matrix in the load flow method. The biggest advantage of so-called Fast Decoupled Load Flow(FDLF) method over the conventional Newton-Raphson method is the short computation time for large power systems which is achieved by the reduced size of Jacobian matrix. However, it is said to worsen convergence characteristics for distribution systems with lines of high R/X ratios compared to the conventional Newton-Raphson method. In order to overcome the problem, the authors employed a coordinate transformation in Y-matrix of the Fast Decoupled method. Better convergence processes in the improved Fast Decoupled method are demonstrated and some discussions are given in case of the analysis of the distribution systems with high R/X ratio lines.

A new type of nonsalt solar pond was investigated by field testing. The roof of the solar pond was formed using a transparent double film. Three kinds of tests were carried out under the following conditions: (1) insulating pellets were packed between the layers of the transparent double film of the roof at sunset; (2) the water surface of the pond was insulated using only the two transparent films; (3) the water surface of the pond was covered by the double film with the top surface blackened on which solar energy can be collected, while pond water was circulated using a solar cell powered submerged water pump. The warm water stored in the solar pond by the above methods was utilized as a heat source for a gas engine powered heat pump used to heat a greenhouse. In this report, the results of the field tests on the above solar ponds and greenhouse heating system are discussed. Also the utility of a combination plant using a solar pond and underground borehole storage system is evaluated. Important conclusions on performance are as follows: (1) collection efficiencies of these solar ponds become 9–54% corresponding to the weather conditions and pond temperatures; (2) maximum temperature of the pond water under weather conditions at Osaka is about 80°C; (3) the solar pond can be effectively utilized for heating a greenhouse; (4) the combination plant using the solar pond and the underground storage layer can store heat of 1119 MJ m−2 yr−1.

Power integrity (PI) for recent electronics circuits and systems is the most important technological issue in the field and has been addressed in important papers through several approaches[1][2]. A novel technology is used in our study only using a conductive layer of dispersed metal particles instead of copper plane. We investigate physical phenomena and some fundamental data for PI. The transmission lines which uses metal particle conductive layer(MPCL), it causes the change in a variety of electromagnetic wave transmission speeds such as increases 76% and decrease by 21%. As a result, Z11 value of power/GND plane test coupon at 5GHz is from 2.01 (ICEP2011 [3]) to 1.79 ohm. Also we made a trial PCB in which we only replaced from the power copper metal plane in the circuit board with MPCL. The voltage fluctuation was decreased about 60% using a MPCL structure. Our developed MPCL structure has excellent characteristics not only for PI but also SI in the desirable high-frequency region. This phenomenon must be clarified as the physical basis for more progressive PI and SI issues. We suppose that these characteristic is due to interactions between electromagnetic wave and metal surface electrons. So we think that the morphology of MPCL must be an important point of improving PI and SI in the desirable high frequency region.

In an attempt to check solvent dependence of drawability of ultra high-molecular-weight polyethylene films, gels were prepared from diphenyl/diphenylether solution, which is well known as Θ-solvent. The content of diphenyl in the mixed solvent was chosen to be 25 wt%. Rapid gelation occurred when the solution had been cooled down to temperature lower than 147°C. The gel shrunk drastically with the further decrease of temperature and formed a bulk specimen. The maximum draw ratio was 20 and the corresponding Young's modulus reached 27 GPa. The value of Young's modulus was higher than the maximum value of melt film stretched up to 30 times, but it was much lower than the value of film which was prepared by gelation from decalin solution and was elongated up to 300. Thus, it turned out that the drastic shrinkage in the process of rapid gelation hampers a suitable level of the entanglement mesh that effectively transmits the drawing force.

Hybrid system reachability is applied to verification of fault release control in a power system. Fault release control is one strategy in emergency control and aims to mitigate an electrical stress of power system caused by disturbances. We introduce practical data in a fault release control of double machine-infinite bus (DMIB) system. The data is obtained using the RTDS and describes that the control is effective for prevention of transient instability in the DMIB system. By modeling of swing dynamics of the DMIB system as a hybrid automaton and reachability analysis of the automaton, we show that the control is correct for the prevention of transient instability., Power Symposium, 2008. An LED array module was developed by using the microbump bonding method by which the electrodes of LSI chips and circuit substrate are press-bonded by utilizing the shrinkage stress produced in a light setting insulating resin. The LED array module has a resolution of 400 DPI, and is constructed by face-down mounting of 54 each of the LED chips and driver LSIs on a glass substrate. These LED chips, having an electrode pitch of 63.5 mu m, are disposed on the glass substrate at a pitch of 10 mu m. A dedicated bonder was developed for this assembling work. A report on the LED array module assembling process and the construction of a bonder is presented. >

In this nonsalt type of solar pond, the nonconvecting layer is composed of a viscous polymer solution partitioned by a number of transparent films. An advantage of partitioning is that a thinner polymer solution can be used and that the light transmittance increases. Results of experimental and theoretical investigations on the performance of this solar pond are summarized as follows: 1. 1. Ionized polyacrylamide solution was chosen as the thickener based on tests about solubility, viscosity, light transmittance and stability. 2. 2. The critical temperature difference for the onset of convection in the polymer layer ( ΔT L ) cr [°C/m] was given by the following formula based on the measurements in various thicknesses of the polymer layers (L) [m] and various concentrations (ζ) [%], ( ΔT l ) cr =(55−185lnL) exp (4.66L 0.505 lnζ 3. 3. An outdoor model pond, 200 × 150 cm surface and 100 cm depth, was constructed in Osaka. Four types of model ponds were tested, and the availability of membrane type with partition films was confirmed. 4. 4. The theoretical temperature rise of the pond using a one-dimensional model was calculated by solving the equations of the heat balance in the pond. As a result, the optimum values of thickness of polymer layer and number of films was determined

Conclusion: Both FLC and HLC are sensitive and accurate tools to perform MRD assessment response in MM, in our cohort a 42.3% of EBR were detected ahead of other techniques. More investigations on this field are warranted

In order to construct effective CAD/CAM systems, it is very important to implement and to exploit graphic processing tools for man machine communication. Up to the present day, stand alone-type graphic display systems have been commonly used, but they are not necessarily suitable for constructing integrated CAD/CAM systems. On the other hand, some of CAD/CAM systems are using ter minals of a large scale host computer, but they can not satisfy our need for quick response and low cost/performance. So, we have developed a highly intelligent graphic terminal which has simple hardware structure and can be operated easily with quick response as a TSS terminal of a host computer. This paper describes software and hardware of the terminal, and furthermore an architecture of integrated CAD/CAM system using this terminal.

The concept of "power flow tracing" between generators and loads has been discussed for determining wheeling rates of newcomers under deregulated environments. In this paper, we focus on "distance DC method", which is one of the tracing methods based on DC flow calculation, and thus we first propose a new generator power flow tracing method using lineflow sensitivities of bus powers and the distance DC network. Both generator-to-load contributions and generator-to-lineflow contributions are obtained from the proposed method. Secondly, we propose an application of the proposed tracing method for congestion elimination of transmission lines. We run numerical simulations using an eleven bus system and verify the validity of the proposed methods.

In iliac bone marrow the absolute number of mononuclear cells (MNCs) was increased in RA patients compared with the non-RA controls. In CD8 positive cell and myeloid cell fractions, significant differences were recognized between RA patients and non-RA controls. The presence of abnormal myeloid lineage cells in epiphyseal bone marrow adjacent to joints affected with severe RA was shown. Stroma cell lines from RA bone marrow with nursing activity were established and shown to play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis in RA bone marrow. Histologic study also shows that subchondral region expressing tissue-damaging proteinases plays an important role in joint destruction in RA.

Abnormalities of the epiphyseal growth plate that occur in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) were studied. CIA was induced in 6-week-old Lewis rats by immunization with type II collagen. Radiographic examination revealed the early closure of the epiphyseal growth plate with growth retardation of the femur and tibia. Histological evaluation confirmed the early closure of the epiphyseal growth plate accompanied by decreased intensity of safranin-O staining indicating decreased amounts of proteoglycans in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the cartilage. Immunohistochemical methods showed that the number of chondrocytes expressing matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3 and/or vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) increased in the growth plates of CIA rats. This study confirmed that disturbances of long bone growth with early closure of the epiphyseal growth plates occur in CIA. There appeared to be overexpression of MMP-3, which may be involved with proteoglycan degradation. Additionally, VEGF, which is associated with cartilage ossification and angiogenesis, might also play a role in this event. Further clarification of the mechanism of the growth disturbance in CIA may yield clinical benefits, especially in prevention of the premature closure of growth plate that is seen in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases.

A 49-year-old Japanese man was seen to have an esophageal tumor on a routine barium swallow examination. Endoscopy revealed a sessile polyp covered by an almost normal esophageal mucosa, and the bioptic histology was non-diagnostic. Endoscopic ultrasonography showed a hypoechoic tumor with a diameter of 12 mm, confined to the submucosal layer, with the underlying muscularis propria layer being intact. On the basis of this finding, endoscopic resection was chosen and the tumor was resected using a two-channel endoscope, with prior hypertonic saline and epinephrine injection. The pathologic diagnosis was a cavernous hemangioma of the esophagus.

A novel LSI chip bonding method called the micron-bump bonding method was developed, making feasible micron-order direct bonding between the LSI electrode and the electrode provided on the circuit substrate. The shrinkage stress generated in light-setting insulating resin is utilized to apply a compressive force to an LSI chip, pressing it against the electrodes on the substrate. LSI chips having an interelectrode spacing of 10 mu m and a total of 2320 electrodes were successfully gang-bonded with high reliability. This technology was also successfully applied to an LED array printer head. >

An LED (light-emitting diode) array module was developed by employing the micron bump bonding technique, in which electrodes of LSI chips and circuit substrate are press-bonded by utilizing the shrinkage stress produced in a light-setting insulating resin. The developed LED array module has a resolution of 400 DPI, and is constructed by face-down mounting of 54 LED chips and 54 driver LSIs on a glass substrate. These LED chips, which have an electrode pitch of 63.5 mu m, are disposed on the glass substrate at a pitch of 10 mu m. A dedicated bonder was developed for this assembling work. >

The next generation of the ORion flat panel ion doping system has been developed in order to meet evolving industry requirements for implantation into substrates that now exceed one square meter in area. The ORion II ion doping system scales-up both the linear ribbon-beam ion source, and the high-throughput substrate handling architecture of the first-generation ORion machine. The ORion II is capable of processing of substrates up to 1000t1200 mm, and can deliver linear beam current densities of 700 particle mA/cm of phosphorous and 300 particle mA/cm of boron. In addition to describing the machine architecture, we present data on the beam current uniformity, implant It,, throughput, beam current dynamic range and process-switching performance.
